With spring just around the corner and temperatures starting to rise the saying goes that a young man’s fancy turns to love. The result of that love invariably leads to marriage – even if not as often as it used to – and to help you make that very special day the fairytale you have always wanted we have included a comprehensive wedding guide in this month’s edition. Forward planning is the real secret behind a perfect day and there is plenty of good advice to enable you to start planning straight away. Every year we join the Irish in celebrating St Patrick’s Day and although it’s an established Church of England festival there are still very few people who actually know who St Patrick really was. We’ve also tried to put that right this month. And, as the football season heats up towards what could be a dramatic finale, we highlight a young man who could eventually save the club millions. Happy reading!

Just Who Was St. Patrick & Why Do We Celebrate His Day? Every year we join the Irish in celebrating St Patrick’s Day and although it’s an established Church of England festival there are still very few people who actually know who St Patrick really was. While there is little real evidence of his early life it is thought he was born in Wales about AD 385 with the given name Maewyn, and - far from being a saint, - until he was 16 he considered himself a pagan. At that age he was taken from his village and sold into slavery by a group of Irish raiders. It was during his six year captivity that he became a Christian and adopted the name Patrick. He eventually escaped and fled to Gaul, studied for 12 years in a monastery under the bishop of Auxerre and realised his calling was to convert pagans to Christianity. He proved very successful and was eventually appointed second bishop to Ireland. His success upset the Celtic Druids because they had their own native religion and Patrick was arrested several times but escaped on each occasion. He
travelled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries and setting up schools and churches which would aid him in his indoctrination of the Irish country into Christianity. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to County Down. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since. Much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick's Day, though not much of it can be substantiated. Some of this lore includes the belief that Patrick raised people from the dead. He is also said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland, but because no snakes were ever native to Ireland, it is thought that this was a metaphor for the conversion of the pagans. Though originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday. One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. Patrick used the three-leafed
Holding An Event?
shamrock to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – The Holy Trinity - could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. The St. Patrick's Day custom arrived in America in 1737, the year St. Patrick's Day was first publicly celebtrated, Boston being the original venue. Today, people all over the world celebrate the day with parades, wearing of green and drinking beer. One theory for the St. Patrick's Day popularity may well be that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say, in fact, that it has become the first green of spring.

Angler's gift to Redcar RNLI after tragedy An angler whose brother-in-law drowned when he was swept off a breakwater has returned to Redcar with a donation towards the lifejacket appeal for the town’s RNLI lifeboat volunteers. Richard Milnes was fishing with his brotherin-law Keith Ellerby at the South Gare, near Redcar, when tragedy struck on October 24 last year. A huge wave swept Mr Ellerby into the sea and, after a major rescue effort involving RNLI lifeboats from Redcar and Hartlepool, he was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Tragically he later died. Mr Ellerby worked for the NHS in York. And now his family, friends and colleagues have raised £1,570 for Redcar lifeboat station as a thank-you for their efforts in trying to save him.
north of England will receive the new, stateof-the-art lifejackets this year, at an average cost of £3,000 per station. Mr Milnes, 63, explained the cash mainly came from a charity evening held at the York District Hospital social club. He said: 'Like every charity, they need the coffers filling up so this is a way of helping do that. It could buy equipment which helps them pull someone from the water alive.' Dave Cocks, of Redcar Lifeboat, said: 'It was such a tragic event, so for people to be generous enough to think about fundraising for the RNLI in those circumstances is very humbling.
The money will go towards buying new lifejackets to be issued soon to the volunteer crew at Redcar. Lifeboat crews across the
'We are extremely grateful. The money has gone straight towards buying the latest design of lifejackets for our volunteers.'

Car Review - Toyota Avensis 2012 Toyota has recently released its 2012 version of the Avensis with both sedan and estate versions available. Yet though cosmetic changes on both the outside and the inside represent – according to Toyota – “the largest mid-life investment so far made for any of their models” the changes are not particularly considerable. Slimmer headlights, a more prominent front grille and redesigned rear lights and bumper, however, do give it something of a new look, and it certainly looks more dynamic than its predecessor. Buyers can opt for either 16-inch steel wheels with covers or 17-inch alloy rollers and Toyota will also offer additional 17 and 18-inch styles featuring a darker finish. Overall dimensions of Toyota Avensis 2012 are similar to the previous model. It is under the bonnet that the biggest improvements have been made, though, with significant revisions to the 2.0-litre diesel engine boosting fuel economy from an estimated 53.3mpg to 62.8. At the same time, CO2 emissions fall from 139gm/km to 199gm/km - dropping the Avensis into the lowest 13% diesel company car tax band, though when the bands change in April that will rise to 17%. A 148 horsepower 2.2 litre turbo diesel and a 145 horsepower 1.8 petrol engine will also be available. PAGE 10
All the Toyota Avensis 2012 engines are equipped with a standard six-speed manual transmission, though a six-speed automatic is also available for the 2.2-litre diesel and a CVT optional on the 1.8-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre diesel engines. The inside of the car is pretty impressive with high quality materials and excellent construction standards. The centre console includes the latest touch screen multimedia interface giving simple access to the audio and Bluetooth systems and the Satellite Navigation equipment. There is also an upgrade option which will provide voice activation, email access and speech recognition text messaging. Head, leg and elbow room are generous, as is the list of available extras like 17inch alloys, automatic lights and wipers, cruise and climate controls, rear view parking camera, four electric windows, seven airbags and electronic stability control. In all, then, the Avensis in its new form represents a solid purchase because it makes an attractive, dependable and relatively inexpensive choice that will eat up the miles in a trouble free and economical manner. To the real driving enthusiasts it may not make for an exciting or particularly thrilling ride but for those of you looking for real reliability it is an excellent choice.

I’ve been in many places..... A friend of ours used to claim that although he had been in many places in the world there were some he had never visited and some that seemed a little strange when he did. Here are some of excellent examples of both. ‘I have never been in Cognito,’ he said. ‘I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. It must be close because apparently you have to be driven there. I have already made several trips thanks mainly to my friends, family and work. I must live close because under the right circumstances I get there very quickly. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too good on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! And, sometimes I think I’m in Vincible but life shows me I’m not. People keep telling me I'm in Denial but I'm positive I've never been there before! So far, I haven't been in Continent; but friends say I'll probably be going soon. That’ll be nice as long as I’m warm and dry!
The Uk Is In Deep Trouble & It’s Apparently My Fault! Speaking to a friend recently he outlined the problems he reckoned the UK was faced with. Not being the most intelligent man I ever met I wasn’t too impressed with the argument but this is how he put it…. ”There are, he said approximately 60 million people in this country. 32 million are retired or on the dole so that leaves 28 million to do the work. There are 17 million at school or university. That leaves 11 million to do the work. 8 million are employed by the UK government so that leaves just 3 million to do the rest of the work. 1.2 million are in the armed forces concentrating on Afghanistan and North Africa. That only leaves 1.8 million to do the work. Take from that total the 0.8 million who work for Local Government and that only leaves a million to do the rest of the work. At any given time there are 488,000 people in hospitals or claiming incapacity benefit, leaving 512,000 to do the work. There are 511,988 people in prison leaving just two people to do the work. You and me. And there you are sitting on your backside listening to this load of old rubbish. No wonder the country’s in a mess!” PAGE 12

Gardening Tips for March Essential Jobs Checklist For March
Prune roses and clematis Start sowing vegetables outside Sow seeds for summer bedding in greenhouse or indoors Start fuchsias and pelargonium’s into growth Feed and mulch established plants Remember to continue feeding birds even if weather improves Give your lawn its first cut with the blades on highest setting
Flower Garden
Herbaceous plants will start into growth this month. Fork a general purpose plant food around your plants as they emerge – choose Chicken Manure Pellets, Fish, Blood and Bone if your prefer an organic product. Then cover the soil with thick mulch using bark chips or composed bark. This will keep the moisture in and keep weeds down, making your life easier. Be careful you don’t damage plants that are not yet showing. Carry on pruning clematis. If warm weather means your late-flowering varieties have already made a lot of new growth don’t worry about cutting them back – they will shoot again from buds lower down. Pruning will also have the effect of delaying flowering. You might choose to prune some clematis early and some late to give you continuity of flowering. Make sure you know which group your clematis falls into before you get out the secateurs. Feed your clematis after pruning and mulch them.
Going Green
Have you got your water butt cleaned out and ready for the summer, if not this is the month to get all systems ready for the months ahead
Vegetable Garden
If conditions are suitable outside, you can start to sow seeds of broccoli, cabbage, kale, kohl rabi, parsnips, peas, radish and spinach. It’s best to cover with cloches. Plant out onion sets and shallots Buy seed potatoes and put them in a cool light position to sprout. You can start planting early varieties towards the end of the month. PAGE 16
THE EYE MAGAZINE - MARCH 2012
Green House
Sow seeds for summer bedding in your greenhouse. If you don’t have a greenhouse you can raise many seeds successfully on a warm, bright windowsill in the house or conservatory. However you choose to grow your summer bedding, you’ll find compost available to suit you. You can also start begonia tubers and canna roots. Begonia is best started by laying the tubers in a tray of moist compost. Once the shoots show you can pot them individually.
Containers
Winter containers might be looking a bit the worse for wear by now. Clean out the containers ready for planting out summer bedding in May. To give a quick burst of colour until then look, out for pots of Senetti in the garden centre, or plant some perennials that catch your eye. Once May comes, you can plant these into permanent positions in your garden.
Lawns
The grass will be starting to grow this month so you can give your lawn its first cut of the season – make sure the blades are set high. Carry on aerating your lawn and rake it to get out debris and dead grass and moss. If moss is a problem you can use Sulphate of Iron. Many gardeners prefer to kill weeds at the same time – in this case choose the a Feed, Weed and Mosskiller.
Roses
Continue to prune large-flowered and cluster-flowered roses and then give them a feed. Shrub roses should not be pruned in the spring as you won’t get flowers. However, you can feed and mulch shrub roses now.
Fruit Garden
For an early crop of strawberries bring potted plants into the greenhouse. Water well and feed Scotts liquid tomato food to boost flowers and fruiting. If your rhubarb is pushing through, cover it with an upturned bucket to exclude the light. This will encourage the plant to produce tender pink shoots. PAGE 17

TANJOOBERRYMUTTS It’s almost a necessity nowadays to be able to understand the pigeon English used by many of the friends we’ve made that are now residing here from foreign climes. If, for instance, you have found a Chinese restaurant that provides you with all the perfect recipes you have come to love then you should also be able to converse with the proprietor in his own – sometimes unique -version of the English language. By the time you read the following, therefore, you will be comfortably able to understand the heading of this piece. What, I can hear you say, does TANJOOBERRYMUTTS’ mean. You’ll know soon enough. The following is a telephone exchange between someone like you as a Hotel guest & roomservice in a Chinese Hotel ... Room Service: "Morrin. Roon sirbees." Guest: "Sorry, I thought I dialled room-service." Room Service: " Rye , Roon sirbees...morrin! Joowish to oddor sunteen?" Guest: "Uh... Yes, I'd like to order bacon & eggs." How quirky is your brain? We’ve seen this sort of thing before but in the past it’s always been letters that have either been removed or replaced by other letters. On this occasion, however, some of the letters have been replaced by numbers. See if you can read the following..... F1gur471v31y 5p34k1ng? Good example of a Brain Study. Summer’s Swallows I see them from my morning bed, the swallows circling overhead. They’re still there in the evening sky, swooping low, then soaring high. Seeking insects for their food and their ever hungry brood. In this cold and rainy weather will they find them just as ever, or will they be in short supply when some of the young may die. Will numbers be the same this year when migrating time draws near. Without fail they come and go but, I wonder, if they’d know with climatic changes,if they come, ’twas time to seek another home. May this never come to be, with no swallows there to see, summer would not be the same, we’d have to change that season’s name Poem by Robert Hogg Read more poems on our website @ www.theeyemagazine.co.uk

Another Diamond Unearthed The easiest thing in football is to blame injuries and suspensions for poor results. Conversely, the hardest thing – judging by the very few managers who actually achieve it – is to replace the missing personnel with young, hungry and enthusiastic members of the youth squad. Strangely that has never really been a problem at ‘Boro, as demonstrated by the recent performance in the FA Cup against Premier League Sunderland at the Riverside. For a considerable part of that game no fewer than nine Boro’ Academy players were on the pitch at the same time and gave the Black Cats far more problems than a full strength Arsenal side managed in the next round. And now, following the recent injury to Scott McDonald, yet another jewel from the academy has been unearthed. On this occasion he is a relative newcomer, having only signed for Middlesbrough last summer when his contract at Darlington expired but after only a few months under Dave PAGE 24
Parnaby and his staff Curtis Main has already given us a hint of what might be with several impressive first team appearances culminating in that excellent goal against Millwall. Ironically, his senior partners had missed a handful of chances in the first half of that game which meant the second half was an extremely nervy affair until the introduction – and subsequent goal – of Curtis Main. Tony Mowbray was quick to point out afterwards that Main still had a lot to learn but since he’s only 19 that is obviously an attempt on Mowbray’s part to keep the young man’ feet firmly on the floor. With McDonald’s future at Middlesbrough still in the balance, however, Main’s arrival on the first team scene could well save the club the huge outlay involved with finding and buying a proven goal scorer. We can only wait and see. Following on from the Millwall game is probably our most important game so far this season with Reading sitting a couple of places – albeit only by one point – above us in the league. A
win over them – and because of early deadlines we don’t yet know whether that will happen – would put us back in a super position and would mean three wins in a row and along with two draws - a so far unbeaten February. There is little doubt that the returning wounded and the arrival of Lucas Jutkiewicz has created that happy position and shows that if we can keep relatively injury free there is still a great deal to play for. What is certain is that this season things are going to stay interesting right until the end!

Tips For Ordering Your Wedding Stationary When to order As a guide, we would recommend that orders for Invitations & RSVP cards are placed at least five to six months before your wedding date for sending out three to four months before your wedding. Save-The-Date cards can be ordered as early as you want. Once your guests have replied to your invitations, you can then work out your seating plan. Your Reception venue will tell you how many tables you will have and where they will be placed. We can then start working on your table plan. If you require a full set of wedding stationery we recommend that you order all of your stationery at once, (with an estimated numbers if exact quantities are not known at that stage) to ensure continuity of your design. How many to order Allow one Invitation per family/couple (and you may wish to order a few extra for any changes made when writing them out or any extra guests you may decide to ask at a later date). Allow one Order of Service per couple (and you may wish to order a few extra for evening guests who may also wish to attend the ceremony). The details within your Order of Service will need to be agreed with your Church/Venue before you submit them to your stationer.
