Plus Much More... The Eye is delivered monthly to over 13,250 homes in Redcar & Marske.

It’s always said that sporting success helps lift spirits more than most things and the start ‘Boro are enjoying should certainly have had the desired effect around Teesside. We can also look forward to an exciting climax to the Rugby World Cup with England still performing well. One piece of sad news to be aired in this month’s edition is the closure of one of Redcar’s most iconic businesses with Mungle Jungle about to shut its doors. Many will remember the fun and excitement they’ve enjoyed there over the years. It’s not all bad news, however, and a new soft play area is due to take its place in the not too distant future. And just in case you need reminding, the clocks go back on the thirtieth of this month to give us an extra hour in bed. Wonderful! Happy reading.

Romania trip results in more than just memories for Redcar students A group of students from Redcar & Cleveland College have returned from an overseas trip with more than just souvenirs and memories after they decided to sponsor an orphan who they met on the trip. The 20 students, who are all studying for qualifications in Childcare or Health & Social Care at the college, along with three members of staff were making their annual trip to the Caminul Felix Project in Oradea, Romania as part of their courses. The Christian charity provides a home for abandoned and neglected children in two purpose-built villages under the care of adults who act as their ‘family’. Children are provided with basic needs such as food, love and shelter, which they wouldn’t have ordinarily received. The students and staff decided to sponsor one of the charity’s children, after spending time with her and the family who look after her as part of the long term links and commitment they have to Caminul Felix. 11-year-old Mihaela, who has been living at the project’s village since March last year, was chosen after they met PAGE 4

her and the family who care for her. The college’s support will provide Mihaela with some of the basic items she needs for the next year including new clothes and school books. Tess Ivison, a tutor in Early Years courses at the college said: “The visit to the psychiatric hospital was a particularly challenging part of the trip for students who took clothes, activities and equipment for the patients who aren’t ordinarily used to receiving the levels of attention we were able to give them.

The visit gave out students the opportunity to experience a differing approach to dealing with mental health issues that we have in the UK and helped them to develop the skills they have been learning as part of their courses at college.” Planning is already underway for the student’s 2012 trip to Romania with sponsors and supporters being sought. Anyone interested in supporting the trip should contact Claire Barwick or Gillian Morgan at the college on 01642 473132.

Gut Awareness

Now is the time to banish those negative feelings of sluggishness, bloating, headaches, flatulence, constipation, mental fatigue, Irritable Bowel, painful joints and bad breath. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a gentle treatment using warm filtered water combined with special abdominal massage techniques to gently cleanse the bowel. Internal detoxification is vitally important but often neglected, overlooked or misunderstood. The power of detoxing comes from ensuring the colon eliminates all the waste that could otherwise cause toxicity.

A Ghostly Halloween Story On October 31st we celebrate Halloween, thought to be the one night of the year when ghosts, witches, and fairies are especially active. There are no records anywhere to show why we actually celebrate Halloween but since it takes place on the eve of the major Catholic and Christian Festivals of ‘All Saints Day’ (Sometimes called All Souls Day) and the Pagan Celtic festival known as ‘Samhain’ it can only be presumed that it is a precursor to those important religious days. The Celts believed that evil spirits came with the long hours of winter darkness and on that night the barriers between our world and the spirit world were at their weakest, so allowing spirits to be seen on earth. ‘All Souls Day,’ in fact, was the customary date on which people prayed for the souls of the dead, and because of these spiritual connotations the stories told of evil and ghostly events on that particular date take on a believable quality that makes Halloween the exciting festival it has become. Following is our favourite ‘spooky’ tale that an old lady friend of my mother swears happened to her in the Yorkshire dales! Enjoy! “After a few years of marriage my family and I moved into a nice house, big with a large garden, but right next door to a small family cemetery. It’s a very sad place. Most that are buried there are infants, some stillborn and others that passed away shortly after birth, mostly in the late 1880s. The move went well and my children settled into their new surroundings wonderfully, but one day I was downstairs with my youngest daughter when I noticed a movement on the stairs. At first I thought it was my youngest son, but when it dawned on me that he was at school I turned to see a little boy with brown hair and big brown eyes sitting on the stairs smiling at me. A little puzzled I called out the name of my youngest son Paul and the little boy seemed shocked and ran upstairs. I raced after him and. after checking all the rooms, even the usual hiding spots, found no sign of the little boy. I just shrugged it off as a mirage and carried on as usual. A couple of nights later, when everyone was in bed asleep, I went downstairs to get some water and noticed that the toy cars my boys had been playing with earlier were lined up on the fireplace hearth. I thought maybe one of them hadn’t put them away so I put them in the toy box and went into the kitchen. When I returned a couple of minutes later the cars were back on the hearth. Something told me to say in a very soft voice ‘Paul, it’s time for bed now. No more playing. Just go to sleep.” Then I went back upstairs to bed.

THE EYE MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2011 Next day my husband had gone to work, the children to school and my youngest was asleep in her cot when the little boy suddenly reappeared at the foot of the couch. He looked so sad. At first I thought, “I’m sleep deprived. I’m seeing things.” So I closed my eyes and opened them and he was still there. So I asked him, “Are you okay?” He said no. I asked him if he needed something, and he said no. I asked him if he wanted something, and he said yes. I felt a little uneasy when he answered in that way. I took a deep breath and asked him, “What do you want?” He looked at me and said, “I’m sleepy—can I lay down with you, Mummy?” Now that did freak me out a little, because the ghosts I grew up with never really talked to me much so this made me a little nervous. I took a deep breath and said the unthinkable—“You can come and lay down with me, but when you go to sleep I’m going to have to put you to bed like I do with the baby.” He said, “That’s okay, Mummy, I just can’t sleep without my cuddle time.” At that point my maternal instinct kicked in and I lay down on the couch and said, “Come, it’s time to sleep.” I closed my eyes and he came closer, and then I could feel him - quite cold beside me. I looked down and he was lying there looking at me with a smile on his face. Then he closed his eyes and suddenly he was gone. I told my husband about it later and he said that I was just seeing things. Determined to discover the truth I to the cemetery to see if I could find out what the little boy’s name was. I wasn’t shocked to see that the only grave with a similar age to the little boy belonged to someone called Paul. There was also a carving of his face and, sure enough, it was definitely that of the little boy I had seen. It was, however, a kind of relief because since that afternoon I have never seen him again. I think that, after all, he only needed someone to cuddle him just one last time.”

Your October horoscope Aries (March 21-April 20): Although Aries are not known for their organisational skills, you will need these to go alongside your usual routine. Avoid beginning new projects then leaving them for others to complete. Instead, perfect what you already know, seek help from others when it is needed and remember to show your gratitude! Taurus (April 21-May 21): You always have a sense of duty but when a new arrives you’ll be in two minds and won’t know whether to maintain your normally rigorous effort or abandon the idea altogether. Actually, if you stick to somewhere in between and bring a sense of creativity to your duties, a sense of order and more beauty will result. Your diet, too, needs reorganization and salmon is best. Gemini (May 23-June 20): Whatever your occupation you need to have a steadier and introduce a bit more relaxation towards your responsibilities. You’ll find others seeking strength, comfort, and nurturing from you, and that will create a fuller sense of well-being in your life. You may not be their parent but that’s how you’ll be treated for a while.

Leo (July 21-Aug. 22): Your most important asset at the moment is routine because it can be constant, continual, planned, systematic, and determined. Do your best and it’s possible others will recognize your abilities and offer you more assistance. If people want to feed you it’s their way of saying thank you. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): If there's a wedding this Month it will first bring tears and sorrow then freedom and liberty. All four words apply to Cancer. Problems will be solved thanks to inner knowledge and cosmic impressions that are currently creating thought forms in your mind. Don't worry any more about money. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your vision of what life is about will take on a new look thanks to the full sun/moon guiding you in new ways. The Sun will fill you with lots of goodwill, resulting in better relations all round. If you stay aware of this opportunity it could lead to very good things. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Normal tasks will be easier if you try to do them communally because there is a possibility that you're out of sorts or are unable to relax. Apart from that, there could be something in your career or workplace that will take on a new sheen in the coming months, but put good human relations at the forefront of your activities because the response will be invaluable.

Cancer (June 21-July 20): Don't try to do too many things at once or your life will be filled with a sense of self-interest that no one cares about as they realize that each of your pursuits will just lead to more and none will get you anywhere. This is because Mercury has taken over your thoughts and won’t leave Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 20): until you engage it in study, solitude, and Unless you are able to bring a bit movement. of creativity and enjoyment into your daily routine it will be rather PAGE 8

Your October horoscope tedious and dull. Try to resurrect the things you loved as a child and bring them back into your life because spending a few hours with whatever pleases you can only be good for you. Capricorn (Dec. 21-Jan. 20): Your ambition continues to drive you and so you keep trying whatever you need to do to achieve your goals. This may mean overstretching at times which may suggest nothing is really working but the frustration that brings can be alleviated by an injection of extra discipline, humor and the thought that you provide inspiration to others. However hard you work, though, make sure you maintain intellectual stimulation. Aquarius (Jan. 21-Feb. 18): Changing your attitude to your work has shown you the

advantage of being a little more self-sufficient with freedom an essential ingredient. This has meant casting off the excessive demands made by yourself or others and feeling obligated to lost causes is a pointless exercise. Try to find new ways of working and communicating with others that allow you to be your interesting self. Pisces (Feb. 18-March 20): A more disciplined routine is needed this month but that is not something that will come easily. You must try to create an organized approach to most aspects of your but achieving that will bring everything else into line. Concentrate on one thing ata time and ensure it’s perfect before you move on to something else.

Official - Having Babies Makes You Healthier! According to recent research British parents are discovering that one of the best ways to improve your health is by having children. A study of 2000 new mums and dads revealed that 63 per cent of them had adopted a more healthy lifestyle following the birth of their child. Despite the popular misconception that new babies can cause you to lose sleep, making you feel irritable and unhealthy, just over half the people interviewed felt that the added responsibility of their baby after the birth had been the catalyst for them to pay more attention to their well-being by taking more physical exercise and paying more attention to the type of food they ate. It’s inevitable, of course, that new parents are going to automatically do more exercise because of the natural demands of the baby, but forty six per cent said they had also taken on a regular fitness regime. PAGE 10

An impressive 85 per cent of parents said they were aware of the importance of setting good examples to children and that had manifested itself in a tendency to eat more fruit and vegetables, spend more time planning and preparing healthy meals and also make a concerted effort to cut down on fatty and sugary foods. 29 per cent said their new lifestyle had begun as soon as they knew they were to be parents while 14 per cent said their new attitudes began once the baby was actually born. The benefits even extended to dental hygiene with over half claiming they now also spent longer cleaning their teeth. So it’s now official. Having babies isn’t just a great thing to do, it’s also a healthy one!

Who should get the matrimonial home?... There is only one way to find out... When I qualified as a lawyer divorce cases could be like that bit in Harry Hill’s TV Burp where he ponders which of two things is better. In divorce terms he might say “Who should get the matrimonial home, Mr Bloggs or Mrs Bloggs? There’s only one way to find out…….fight!” Often that wasn’t far from the truth. Family Law was just seen as a branch of litigation. The process was adversarial and in those days there were few specialist family lawyers – typically firms had litigation solicitors who might cover family cases but also crime and civil claims as well. As a result the same approach tended to be brought to all types of case even though they are very different. How times have changed. Lawyers have changed – we now specialise far more than we did. The modern family specialist has a far different approach, and indeed mindset, to his or her criminal and civil litigation colleagues. Out with the adversarial, in with the conciliatory. The system has changed - to recognise the different needs of those embroiled in marriage breakdown or family issues. Dispute resolution is the name of the game now.

Judges have changed – again more specialist, and with the focus on persuading and cajoling people to find a basis for sorting things rather than acting as referees in matrimonial bouts to the death. At every turn there is encouragement to minimise the pain and aggravation. And just in case we need a reminder it is to be found in the Family Law Protocol, which provides lawyers with guidance as to good practice in family law cases. It sets a standard by which we can be judged by others and also judge ourselves, and reminds us where our focus should be. The key commitment is to seek to resolve disputes in a non-confrontational and constructive way to preserve people’s dignity and to encourage agreements. Minimise disputes. Minimise costs. Encourage resolution. Encourage communication. Think before you act. Defuse rather than ignite. You can’t really argue with those sentiments. As for hankering after the good old days – well so far as resolving family disputes is concerned I don’t think so. By Mike Hill, Stokesley Family Law

Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above.

Gardening Tips for October Essential Jobs Checklist For October

Bring in tender perennials, trim and store in a frost-free place Mulch your border with homemade compost Start a new compost heap Compost summer bedding and plant up containers with bulbs and winter bedding  Plant bulbs in the garden.

   

Flower Garden

 Continue to plant bulbs in the open garden. Enrich the soil in the planting hole with a

sprinkling of Bonemeal  This is also a good time of year to plant new shrubs and perennials. The warmth in the soil will help them to get quickly established. Be generous with the planting mixture and be sure to water in well in dry weather  October is a good time of year to move established evergreens and conifers. Get a friend to help and dig them up with the biggest rootball you can manage. Prepare the new planting site well with lots of your favourite planting mixture – make sure to include bonemeal to boost root formation. Then water in very well. You’ll need to continue for several weeks until the plant becomes established  Dig up dahlias as soon as frost blackens the foliage. Cut back the stems to about 10 cm (4 inches) and remove as much soil as possible before standing the plants upside-down for about a week to allow them to dry out. Store the tubers in boxes, covered with slightly damp peat. If you don’t have a frost-free greenhouse or shed, you can keep the tubers in a spare bedroom or unheated porch

Roses

 If blackspot or rust has been a problem try and pick off infected leaves as far as you can and dispose of them – don’t put them on the compost heap. If they fall to the ground and blow about they will spread the infections next year.

Containers

 As well as planting containers with bulbs and spring bedding, consider planting a couple with small evergreen shrubs to give a bit of structure and green through the winter months. Euonymus, ivies and dwarf conifers are ideal PAGE 20

THE EYE MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2011

Going Green

 At this time of year the amount of material suitable for composting multiplies alarmingly. Summer bedding, trimmings from perennials and fallen leaves will all rot down, so don’t waste them. Use up all your existing homemade compost to mulch around established borders or to add to planting mixtures for new acquisitions. Then start a new compost heap. Always mix together the different materials – this helps decomposition. Whether you favour a purpose-made compost container or an open heap, you’ll find that the addition of a biological compost maker will help you produce high quality compost easily and cheaply.

Lawns

 New lawns can be laid or sown on well-prepared sites  Scarify established lawns with a rake, then aerate with a fork if you haven’t done it already. There’s still time to use Autumn Lawn Food

Green House

 Check through all pots that have been growing in the greenhouse or that have been brought in from the garden. Destroy any vine weevil larvae that you find  Stop watering tuberous begonias and allow the tops to die off. Then remove the tubers from the compost and store in a cool, dry place  Bring late-flowering pot-grown chrysanthemums into the greenhouse for some late colour  Wash shading off the windows and consider insulating your greenhouse with bubblepack

Vegetable Garden

 Harvest carrots and potatoes, making sure the crops are clean and dry before you put them into storage. Marrows can be stored once their skins have been hardened in the sun  Finish picking tomatoes before the plants become diseased. You can hang up the whole plant to ripen green trusses, or alternatively pick the fruit and ripen it individually. Or you could always make some green tomato chutney!

Fruit Garden

 Finish harvesting autumn-fruiting raspberries and cut down all the canes that have fruited this year PAGE 21

Hotel/Motel Scam

(This one is so simple and so convincing it is shocking) This is scary if only because of how simple it is. I'll bet this works all too often.

the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.'

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When Checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the Charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in. Someone calls the front desk and asked for (example) Room 620 (which happens to be your room). Your phone rings in your room.

Not thinking anything you might give this person your information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk. They ask for a random room number. Then, ask you for credit card information and address information. Sounds so professional that you do think you are talking to the front desk.

You answer and the person on the other end says the following, 'This is the front desk. When checking in, we came cross a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read to me your credit card number and verify

If you ever encounter this problem on your vacation, tell the caller that you will be down at the front desk to clear up any problems. Then, go to the front desk and

ask if there was a problem. If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone called to scam you of your credit card information acting like a front desk employee. This was sent by someone who has been duped, and is still clearing up the mess. Please everyone, help spread the word by forwarding this e-mail to everyone you know. Who knows, you might just help someone avoid a nasty experience. Anyone travelling should be aware of this one! Don't tell them anything, just say, I'll be right down to the desk to clear it up.

Redcar RNLI scatter poppies for Merchant Navy Day The crew of the Redcar RNLI lifeboat has scattered poppy petals as part of a memorial service held each year in the town to pay respects to Merchant Navy sailors who have given their lives at sea.

The memorial service was held in the memorial garden opposite the town's Cenotaph. As the Last Post was being played, the lifeboat launched to scatter poppy petals as an act of remembrance for the sailors of the merchant fleet who died during the two world wars and since. The memorial service is held each year on the Sunday closest to 3 September, the date in 1939 when the first merchant ship was sunk during the second world war.

Make Your Halloween Party A Success With These Scary Food Ideas Halloween Biscuits and cakes Ingredients : 250g/9oz unsalted butter, softened : 250g/9oz golden caster sugar : 2 eggs, lightly beaten : ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract. 500g/1lb 2oz plain flour : red and black food colouring (optional) : 1 teaspoon baking powder : Halloween-themed pastry cutters : red, white and black writing icing : 200g/7oz ready-to-roll fondant icing : 1 tablespoon of apricot jam, warmed with 1 teaspoon of hot water. (You could try colouring the dough with black or red food colouring; it may not be pretty but it will be scary. ) Preparation method: Beat together the butter and sugar in a large bowl, then beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. (If the mixture looks a little curdled, add a spoonful of the flour.) If you’re using food colouring, add a few drops to the mixture. Sift together the flour and baking powder in a separate bowl then stir it into the butter mixture and work into a dough using floured hands. Turn onto a floured work surface and knead into a ball (the dough will be quite wet). Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at least one hour. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3. Line two baking trays with greaseproof paper. Roll the dough out to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness on lightly floured work surface. (It’s best to roll out one portion of the dough at a time, leaving the remainder in the fridge.) Cut shapes out with the Halloween cutters. Take a few limbs and heads off the gingerbread man for added gore. Place the cookies onto the baking tray, leaving a gap between them in case they spread a little and bake for 12-15 minutes, leave on the tray for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling. Once cool, use your imagination to create scary scenarios like red writing icing along the edges of the missing limbs and heads as blood. For the skeletons and mummies, roll the fondant icing out to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness on a work surface dusted with icing sugar and cut out shapes using your Halloween cutters. Brush with the warmed apricot jam and stick the icing on. Decorate with the white and black writing icing. And here’s some other easy to prepare ideas to make your Halloween party a success. Monster Eyes : Cut boiled eggs in half adding an olive in the centre and use red food colouring for the veins! Bats/Witches Blood : Mix cranberry juice and orange juice, red grape juice or black currant to make a yummy blood curdling drink. Witches Fingers : Cook some chicken/fish goujons or fish/veggie fingers and stick a finger nail (a piece of flaked almond) on to the end of each finger using a little bit of cream cheese. Alternatively cut pizzas into finger shapes and add a slice of pepper on the end for finger nails! Green Slime : Make up a packet of lime jelly and leave to set. Once it has set, mash it up with a fork and put in a bowl. Decorate with gummy worm sweets. PAGE 26

England junior coach Pat Smillie to retire England’s Pat Smillie will retire as EWGA’s national junior coach at the end of September – after 13 years spent successfully nurturing and encouraging the country’s best young players. During her tenure, England’s girls have won four European championship medals - one gold, two silvers and a bronze - and they’ve won the girls’ Home Internationals 10 times. Some have become winners on the Ladies European Tour, such as Melissa Reid who has played her way into Europe’s Solheim Cup team. Others are making their way in the USA, such as Jodi Ewart - who was one of the top college golfers – and Rachel Connor.

in golf, in one way or another. They can’t all make it as tournament players but there are other career routes to take. Or, if they stay playing golf at a high club and county level, it’s all good for the game.”

Pat has always been able to draw on personal experience while coaching the girls. She was twice the English girls’ champion, played in two winning teams at the girls’ Home Internationals, captained two England girls’ teams, and played for the England ladies’ team Only last week the successful England ladies’ before turning professional in 1987. That’s what you want, to raise the bar, and to expose the girls to the highest level of European golf so they know what they have to do to be successful if they turn pro,” said Pat, who is based in her home county of Yorkshire.

She is retiring – as she always said she would – at her 50th birthday. But, she will remain involved in England coaching by taking charge of two northern Birdie squads, working with the youngest girls in the EWGA training programme. EWGA chief executive Jim Robinson said: “Pat has been brilliant as national junior coach, we shall miss her tremendously and we offer her our very best wishes for the future.”

Most of the girls in the EWGA training programme aspire to a professional playing career. A brilliant run whichever way you look at it. Eight games, five wins, three draws, undefeated and with a goal difference of Plus 8. Had any of us been offered that at the start of the season we would have taken somebody’s hand off! And yet there are still many fans who don’t seem convinced because with a home record at the time of writing showing played four, drawn three there is a strong indication of an inability to break teams down when they arrive at the Riverside and put men behind the ball. Away from home the natural pace comes to the fore and ‘Boro are taking advantage of that by hitting teams on the break. But while it’s most gratifying that the Ipswich game was the first time the team have failed to score in a competitive match for 21 games, at home the forwards are simply not getting the service needed. Overall, however, we should be delighted with the way Tony Mowbray has harnessed the same players that failed Strachan so badly. Some of that was self-inflicted, of course, because the little Scotsman didn’t give the likes of Emnes and Bennett a chance yet they have shown just how good they can be under Mowbray. Both, in fact, have been terrific. A lot of the credit for the run must go to the defence, though, because it is certainly doing its job wonderfully. Last season’s habit of dropping points with late goals seems to have been alleviated and the recent run of three consecutive clean sheets enabled three points to be secured with just one goal at Crystal Palace. Carl Ikeme’s loan spell has also been a big plus and he has certainly brought stability to the defence. We can only hope a run of home victories starts soon. It would also be nice to top twenty thousand through the gate. The team has been great so far and certainly deserve better support. And despite the negativity of the piece this month, I for one think results have been fantastic and I firmly believe the run can be maintained. Keep it up, lads, and very well done!
