It’s also Shrove Tuesday month as well, of course, and you don’t need to worry about letting the kids down because we’ve also included a sure fire way of producing excellent pancakes very easily. Perhaps the most amazing thing about February this year, however, is that we’ve really only just started experiencing the kind of weather and temperatures that suggest it really is Winter. After the traumas of last year with blocked roads and dreadful driving conditions that can only have been a good thing. Happy reading.

Students cook up a storm in enterprise challenge A group of Redcar & Cleveland College students have flexed their entrepreneurial muscles to come up with a solution to the huge amounts of food waste created at Christmas time and, at the same time, raise money for charity. The group of five students, who are studying on the Public Services course, came up with the idea of a cook book called ‘Recipe’s of Christ’MASS’ Destruction’ giving recipes for turning people’s Christmas dinner leftovers into tasty treats instead of going in the bin. The team, who came up with the company name ‘Wham’, was made up of 17 year old Bethany Goodman from Dormanstown; Adam Goodman, 16, from Grangetown; Jack Birch, 16, from Normanby; Aaron Bell, 17, and Louis Jinx, 17, both from Teesville. They were the winners of Redcar & Cleveland College’s annual Enterprise Challenge which saw over 200 students work in teams to develop a business idea right from the initial product concept through to taking it to market. PAGE 4

During the two day event they worked with experts from local businesses to help set out their financial, manufacturing and marketing plans, before pitching their idea to a ‘dragon’s den’ of local business people. Speaking about winning the title, Louis, who was one of the group’s members, said: “We worked really hard to develop the idea, and we put everything into our pitch, but it was still a surprise when our name was called out as winners. “It’s made me realise that it’s not beyond me to think about starting a business of my own once I’ve finished my course.” College Principal Gary Groom presented the team with their prize. He said: “We’re immensely proud of the achievements of all of the students who have taken part in the Enterprise Challenge. I know that the judges deliberated long and hard before choosing the winning team. “This programme really does give our students ‘the edge’ which we know makes them more attractive to employers.”

Why Colonic Hydrotherapy is essential after New Year: Festive food is usually rich in sugar, fat, and alcohol. The downside is a sluggish liver and bloated intestines, not to mention the extra weight. More exercise is indicated! However, the intestines may need a little help to shift the sludge that has accumulated in the colon and added to the bloated waist line. Colon hydrotherapy solves the problem by flushing out the sludge with plain warm water. The benefit is a feeling of more energy and well-being, and a spring in the step!

Redcar RNLI first aiders assist injured woman Volunteers from the Redcar RNLI lifeboat station were called upon to use their first aid skills when an ambulance crew requested help in treating a woman with a broken leg on Marske beach. The woman stumbled on the soft sand and broke her right leg while walking on the beach with her husband on Saturday afternoon (14 January 2012). Her husband called for an ambulance and, because of the woman's location, approximately 150 yards from the slipway at Marske, a request was made via the coastguards for lifeboat crew to assist in treating and moving the woman to the ambulance. RNLI first aiders Cameron Bond and Dave Cocks responded to the call at around 1pm. Dave Cocks said: 'The poor woman had a very nasty leg injury. Both bones in her right lower leg were broken and she was in a lot of pain until the paramedic gave her morphine. Once her pain was brought under control we helped to apply a vacuum splint and then carry her into the coastguard's 4x4 patrol vehicle to take her to the ambulance.' Cameron Bond said: 'All RNLI crew are trained to a very high standard of first aid. It just goes to show, we never know when we'll have to put our training to use. When we get called out we usually go to sea, but on this occasion it was manpower on the beach, not the lifeboat, that was needed.' Dave Cocks added; 'It's not the first time the first aid skills of our volunteers have been requested. Ironically, the crew will be taking their three-yearly first aid refresher next month.' The woman was taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment.

Valentine's Day Fun Facts Since one of the main talking points of February is St Valentine’s Day we thought we would research the event to find some interesting and fun facts to share with you. • About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged in the USA and Europe every year. Apart from Christmas that's the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year. • Parents receive 1 out of every 5 valentine cards. • In order of popularity, Valentine's Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets. • About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets. • Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the biggest holidays for giving flowers. • Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year, the majority of which are red. • 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women. • Men buy most of the millions of boxes of chocolates given on Valentine's Day. • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. ‘To wear your heart on your sleeve’ now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. • The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day.

Tell us your stories!

• Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentine’s Day chocolate box in the late 1800s. • Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an "Improvement in Telegraphy", on Valentine's Day, 1876. • The oldest surviving love poem discovered to date is written on a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing, around 3500BC. • In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a prospective suitor. If the gift is kept, then it means she has accepted his proposal of marriage • If an individual thinks of five or six names considered to be suitable marriage partners and twists the stem of an apple while the names are being recited, then it is believed the eventual spouse will be the one whose name was recited at the moment the stem broke. • In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband.

BBC Drama – Brilliant As Ever!

For much of January, Sunday night’s TV was transformed from the extremely ordinary to the very exceptional. The reason was the BBC’s resurrection of their ‘Sherlock’ series, a contemporary update of the original Sherlock Holmes detective stories and also the introduction of a new series about London midwives in the 1950s. The Sherlock series was adapted from the Arthur Conan Doyle series of books by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. A marvellous combination of exceptional dialogue, good story lines and fantastic acting, the first series of three 90-minute episodes was shown in July and August 2010 and won the 2011 BAFTA Television Award for Best Drama Series. The second series has been equally impressive and it’s great to hear a third has now been commissioned. BBC’s ability to air enormously successful and critically acclaimed drama presentations continued with another wonderful Sunday evening offering ‘Call the Midwife,’ an adaptation of Jennifer Worth’s best selling memoirs. The first episode pulled in 8.5million viewers, many of whom were no doubt attracted by Miranda Hart’s move from comedy to drama. And while they may have been disappointed to find she doesn’t actually appear until the second episode, viewers can’t have been anything but impressed with the superb way in which BBC always handles sensitive subjects. Amazingly, Miranda’s appearance in the second episode actually added to the enjoyment and the series is destined to be a big awards winner in the near future. Both realistic and moving, the story lines trace the enormous pressure young midwives faced in 1950s London where infant fatalities, large families and a distinct lack of hygiene were the norm. Miranda Hart admitted that learning to deliver a baby had been a pretty traumatic event but that working with young babies had been pretty amazing. ‘I don’t have kids,’ she said, ‘and haven’t been around many children so when I was presented with a five day old baby I realised just what an amazing thing it is – and that midwives are angels.’ Asked if it had made her want children herself she reverted to the Miranda we have come to know and love in her own TV series where she plays an accident prone shopkeeper. ‘No,’ she said, ‘it pee’d on my glove and I put it straight down and thought ‘no thanks!’

Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. Answers on page 26

Why Do We Celebrate Shrove Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday - more popularly known these days as Pancake Day, has been around for many years and is a regular event around February every year. But have you any idea where it originated and why we continue to celebrate it? Well, here’s the answer! When is Shrove Tuesday? In the Christian calendar there is a period of fasting each year called Lent - a period that ends on Easter Sunday. It begins on Ash Wednesday and Shrove Tuesday always falls on the day before. Shrove Tuesday falls 47 days before Easter Sunday so the date varies from year to year and falls between the 3rd of February and the 9th of March. This year’s date is Tuesday February 21st. The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so they received forgiveness before the season of Lent began. Why are Pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday? Lent is traditionally a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday was always the last chance for people in the Middle Ages to indulge themselves and to use up the foods that weren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes were eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. How do you make Pancakes. To make pancakes you will need the foollowing Ingredients: For the pancake mixture: 110g/4oz sifted plain flour : a pinch of salt : 2 eggs : 200ml/7floz of milk mixed with 75ml/3floz of water :50g/ 2oz butter. To serve: caster sugar : lemon wedges : lemon juice : Golden Syrup. Preparation method 1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Whisk the eggs - any sort of whisk or even a fork will do - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so. 2. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking. When all the liquid has been added, scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tablespoons of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake. 3. Get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and spoon the batter into the hot pan in one go (a ladle is the perfect way to do this). As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it's tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife (or if you feel really clever you can toss them but we wouldn’t advise it) - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate. 4. Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water. This will keep them warm while you make the rest. 5. To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon. 6. We also love them with Golden Syrup, but the filling is very much a personal choice. PAGE 12

How Old is Old? One evening a grandson was talking to his granddad about current events. The grandson asked his granddad what he thought about last year’s London riots, the computer age, and how things used to be when he was young. His Granddad replied, "Well, let me think a minute. I was born before television was first broadcast. Polio injections, contact lenses, organ transplants and the pill hadn’t been heard of. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented tights, air conditioning, dishwashers, spin or tumble dryers, microwave ovens and mobile telephones. Nobody had yet walked on the moon and computers were a figment of a science fiction imagination. Your grandmother and I – along with everyone else we knew – got married first, lived together afterwards and then had children. Almost every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir.” And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir. The word ‘gay’ implied someone was just happy go-lucky. Our lives were governed by the ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent and time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends - not purchasing foreign holiday homes. We had never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or blokes wearing earrings and women with tattoos. PAGE 14

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, Tony Hancock, The Goons and the King's speeches on our radios. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. Pizza Hut, McDonald's and supermarkets in general were unheard of. Ice-cream cones, phone calls in public telephone boxes, rides on a bus, and a bag of chips were all the equivalent of the modern penny. You could buy a new Ford car for £80 or a new semi detached house for £550... (though very few people could afford either, and that was sad because petrol was only the equivalent of the modern 3p a gallon.) Also In my day "grass" was something you mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked with. So in answer to your questions, the computer age is fascinating but beyond us, the London riots wouldn’t have happened and life was a lot simpler back then.” Amazingly though, for all you young people reading this, how long ago do you think ‘back then’ was and how old do you think the grandfather actually was? Well, I can tell you. It was me and I’m just sixty five. If only I’d known then what I know now!

Gardening Tips for February Essential Jobs Checklist For February

 Start to prune roses and clematis  Mulch round established plants  Pick off dying flowers from winter bedding  Start to sow summer bedding in a heated greenhouse  Split overcrowded snowdrops and plant new bulbs  Plant lily bulbs in pots  Start to sow vegetable seeds under cloches/propagators

Flower Garden

 Start to prune clematis. Clematis fall into one of three basic categories – earlyflowered such as Montana ’ s, early large-flowered hybrids and those flowering after midsummer. The ones that need pruning now fall into the last two groups, so check first which varieties you’ve got. For the last group, the late-flowerers, it’s very easy – cut them down to six to eight inches above soil level, cutting just above a bud if you can. Don’t prune spring-flowering clematis or you’ll get no flowers! After pruning feed with your favourite plant food. The early largeflowered varieties are a bit more tricky. You need to cut back healthy stems to just above a strong pair of leaf buds. Don’t cut right back or you won’t get the early flowers at all.  Split clumps of overcrowded snowdrops by digging them up and gently teasing the bulbs apart. Replant in groups of five using a handful of peat Mulch and Mix in the planting hole.  Continue to mulch established borders.  Lightly trim back Winter heathers after flowering has finished.

Vegetable Garden

Under cloches you can sow broad beans, early carrots and parsnips. Sow summer cabbages, onions, leeks and peas in a warm propagator.

PAGE 18

THE EYE MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2012

Green House

 You can make the first sowings in a heated propagator of summer bedding. Those needing an early start include petunias, geraniums, Busy Lizzies and nicotianas. Use seed compost or multi-purpose compost.  Tomatoes can also be sown this month  Towards the end of the month start pelargoniums into growth by watering gently. Once growth starts, cut back the plant and repot it into fresh multi-purpose compost  Fuchsias can also be started. Cut them back to about six inches, report into multi-purpose compost then water gently.

Going Green

 Its time to start thinking of sowing some early salad crops such as lettuce and radish’s, these can be sown safely under cover or under cloches.

House Plants

All houseplants should be watered sparingly in the winter months. Only start to feed houseplants when they show signs of new growth or flower buds.

Containers

Keep picking off the dead heads from winter pansies and primroses to keep them looking good. Replace any plants such as Cyclamen which may have been damaged in the winter months, plants such as Primrose and potted bulbs are great for filling in the gaps.

Lawns

 If your lawn is a bit soggy, pierce it all over with a garden fork at six-inch intervals to help drainage.  Do not be tempted to feed lawns too early as this can accelerate growth too early which may cause problems if severe weather arrives. PAGE 19

Suzuki Swift Sport – a fun car that offers real economy. If you are the sort of car buyer who wants the thrills of a hot hatchback without the large bills, there is certainly space in the market for a car like Suzuki's Swift Sport. This is the second generation of the model, with a series of improvements over the first since it was launched in 2006.

The first Swift Sport won plenty of support, but wasn't perfect and the new model has addressed and overcome previous problems. A six-speed manual gearbox and a higher top gear ratio help to keep cruising engine revs down, improving fuel efficiency considerably. And despite the wheelbase being lengthened in the new model it is still a fairly short car, ensuring a fantastic sense of space and agility, especially at higher speeds on winding roads. That also makes parking both simple and convenient . The 1.6-litre petrol engine is lightweight, helping to give the front wheels good response, but it can struggle to get up to licence-losing speeds no matter how hard it's worked. For some, of course, that represents an appealing aspect. The quality of the interior has been raised since the first model, and the standard equipment list goes far beyond what is normal for a car of this type. While it's not exactly luxurious, it is nevertheless stylish and the seats are surprisingly comfortable. Verdict : Where the Swift Sport has always excelled as a weekend car that offers lots of fun, the new version has more power, uses less fuel than before, is cheaper to tax because of low CO2 emissions and is therefore more likely to attract and satisfy a wider range of user. PAGE 20

As a small car it has limited interior space but rear legroom has been improved. There is a five-door model available. Twin exhausts give it a distinctive, powerful look and the instrument cluster looks great, with big dials and just enough stylistic touches to make it stand out. A central digital screen offers multiple trip computer readouts including fuel consumption figures and an odometer. The plastics for the centre console dials are not the most reassuring in terms of quality, but they are functional and easy to use, and should last without any problems. The All New Suzuki Swift* has been rated as one of Europes safest cars, achieving a maximum 5 star rating in the 2010 test by Euro NCAP. Like its predecessor, this generation of the Swift Sport features keyless entry. It's a very useful feature and makes access easy when you're struggling with shopping, for example. An electronic immobiliser is also standard. In all, then, the new Suzuki Swift Sport is a really fine car, lots of fun to drive and deserves to be considered when you’re next in the market for a new or used car! Just How Sporting Is Sport? We’ve looked forward to the 2012 Olympic Games since the announcement a number of years ago that they were to be held in Britain but the recent revelation that this year there will be more drug tests than ever before to ensure the honesty of the games and its participants is a little disturbing. Seeking to gain advantage through methods that are against the rules – especially of nature -can never be considered sporting. Cricket, meanwhile, has recently undergone a series of investigations that have questioned the game’s integrity, highlighted the role of the gambling fraternity and led to high profile cricketers being banned for blatantly allowing bribes to influence their performances. Horse racing has always been susceptible to financial influences and once again recent publicity has poured doubt on the validity of results and the true intentions of those involved. That there are so many ways to affect the way a horse runs can only lead to doubts about the final result. These are just a few examples of the illegal way sport and its results are being influenced by money yet despite the genuine horror most people feel when sport succumbs to the temptations of wealth, few will acknowledge the most unlevel playing field of all. Football in Britain – and indeed the world - is now all about money and has led to a situation where

only a handful of the 96 English league clubs have even a remote chance of winning the top prize. If you regularly read the sporting press, in fact, you could be forgiven for thinking there were only six or seven football clubs that matter because the rest are hardly ever mentioned. Even when our own team Middlesbrough were performing well in the premiership and reaching the UEFA Cup Final national publicity was minimal. The big problem is that pouring more and more money into certain clubs means that they gain what in other sports would be deemed unfair advantages. Sadly, in football it is accepted as the norm. Buying results in athletics, or snooker, or cricket or racing is considered unfair, unethical and downright cheating. In football it is considered an integral part of being a member of the sport’s elite. How in God’s name can that be fair?

Has The Bubble Burst? While we’ve all been totally delighted – if not a little shocked – at the run of tremendous results ‘Boro have put together since the start of the season there has always been a little doubt as to how long we could continue to pick up points when some of the performances have been average to say the least. Perhaps the most telling statistic is that six of our twelve wins have been with a 1-0 score-line – an obvious demonstration of how much reliance has been placed on the defence. And hindsight wasn’t really needed to see that if a few players were injured we would struggle. Even then, nobody could have envisaged the enormous impact that losing Nicky Bailey has had on the team. When he arrived from Charlton he was classed as a goal scoring midfielder but the way Tony Mowbray has developed his game into the most reliable holding midfielder in the league has been terrific. His tackling, his breaking up of attacks and his simple but effective distribution has been great to watch all season and since his injury the team has really struggled without him. Add to that Julio Arca’s self inflicted ban, Kevin Thompson’s somewhat unlucky double yellow card and Merouane Zemmamma’s hernia operation and the midfield has been pretty much devastated. And with no money for replacements it’s difficult to see the promotion challenge being maintained until we get some of those bodies back. We can only hope that new signing Lukas Jutkiewicz makes an impact. Fortunately, Thompson’s missing game is in the cup against Sunderland – a game we were unlikely to win anyway judging by their recent performances since the little Irish leprechaun took over at the Stadium of Light. Should we do what at the moment looks like the impossible, however, and come away with a result then I will be delighted if not a little surprised and I will apologise for doubting them. We can only wait and see. In the meantime let’s hope the bubble hasn’t burst and this is merely our usual January blip!
