Welcome to the August Edition of
“The Eye Magazine”
A WONDERFUL INSPIRATION We’ve now all had the opportunity to participate in the Olympic build-up as the torch has wended its way through villages, towns and cities across the UK. It’s been an inspirational period for most of us and as the excitement builds towards the greatest sporting event held in this country since 1966 there is much to look forward to.
In This Month’s Issue Are You Ready For The Digital Switch Over? Page 6 Retirement Can Be Very Interesting Page 8 Why Some Men Have A Dog And No Wife Page 14 Paul Recommends Page 22 Bring It On Page 30
Plus Much More... Follow us on Facebook & Twitter
The Eye is delivered monthly to over 13,250 homes in Redcar & Marske.
The Olympic Committee has already achieved a lot because despite the views of the moaners and cynics forecasting problems, everything has been completed on time and we are all ready for the enjoyment to begin. In any event, this country has always demonstrated that even when the logistics aren’t quite right and long queues form we can still be content with our lot and wait it out with everyone else. It’s the British way! Perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of the preparation so far, however, is ‘International Inspiration‘ - London 2012’s international sports legacy programme. Sebastian Coe promised at the Singapore bid in 2005 that its influence would ‘reach young people all around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games so they are inspired to choose sport.’ Since London was chosen it has indeed enriched the lives of millions of children and young people through highquality and inclusive physical education, sport and play. But now the waiting is over and previously unknown sportsmen and women are about to be rocketed into international recognition as all those years of hard work and dedication come to fruition – for the elite few, anyway. But that’s what it’s all about. The striving for achievement and the appreciation of the population when it happens. Let’s hope we’re hearing the national anthem many, many times over the next few weeks. Have a very happy Olympics. Art & Design students proudly exhibit their work with the help of tutors Colin Cook (left) and Meg Ashley (centre)
Top talent on show from Art & Design students Talented Redcar & Cleveland College students have been exhibiting their work in art, design, fashion and photography. The students, all studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design, were proud to show examples including painting, sculpture, photography, 3D design and fashion to scores of interested members of the public and employers. Redcar & Cleveland College art and design tutor and course leader Meg Ashley helped the 40 first and second year students display their work. She said: “Showcasing their work is a wonderful way to sign off from the college before they take the next career step - university, work experience, or training. “Our art and design students get the opportunity to embark on a broad range of degrees and careers including fashion design, photography, fine art, illustration, architecture, and even computer gaming design. I am very proud of the fact that everybody from the second year who has applied for a university place this year has got one.” One of the students exhibiting is Emily Keeling, 18, from Marske by the Sea, who is at the end of her two-year BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design. She is expected to get a distinction but has already secured an unconditional place on a textile and surface design degree at Cleveland College of Art and Design. She said: “Redcar & Cleveland College has been a wonderful experience and in a way I am sad to be leaving, but I’m really excited about the future. As part of my degree I will be working with leading fabric designers from Liberty of London and Hallmark Cards and will be a lot closer to my goal of a career in design.” PAGE 4

Are you ready for the digital TV switch over? With TV services in the UK currently being converted to completely digital we outlined in the previous edition some of the ways that you could organise the conversion easily during the coming month or so before the first switchover on September 12th. We’d now like to give you some further information that could help. The switchover will be in two parts, with the second taking place on September 26th. This will give people the opportunity to check their equipment before the full switchover on that date. We’ve already explained how it can be done through your aerial and using a Freeview box, but to fully cover all possibilities take heed of the following: 1. If you already have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you will still need to re-tune your digital TV or box at the switchover stage. 2. If you have Sky TV, Virgin Media, Freesat or Freesat from Sky you don’t need to do anything. 3. If you only have Analogue TV (up to 5 channels) you will need to convert your TV to digital or you will lose your channels.
switchover, if your VCR or DVD recorder is not digital it will not be able to record one channel while you watch another. The big advantage to all this, of course, is that everyone will have the availability of many more TV channels. The exact number will be dependent on the transmitter from which you receive your signal. Most homes will have around 40 additional channel options, but for even more you need to subscribe to services like Sky TV, Virgin Media, BT Vision or Top up TV. They all offer an enormous viewing choice with Film and Sport their most popular attractions. But time is running out, so if you don’t want to be without your TV in September you need to make a move. There are plenty of local experts who will help you to make the right decision and have you set up in plenty of time! If you don’t want to miss out and don’t feel able to ‘do it yourself’ then why not contact them now?
We know it all sounds very complicated but any of the many excellent local TV retailers will be delighted to help you out. For those over 75 or registered disabled there is also a switchover help scheme that can provide everything you need to help you maintain – and improve - your current viewing for an all-inclusive charge of just £40. Run by the BBC, the scheme will help you convert both your main set and any other in the house (kitchen or bedroom, for instance) to take in the new system. For more information on that one call 0800 40 85 900. Almost any TV can be converted with a digital box, most of which connect to the TV using a SCART cable. If your TV doesn’t have a SCART socket you will need to ask for a digital box with a built-in RF Modulator. You will, of course, need to convert every TV set in the house that you want to continue watching. One problem to watch out for is that, after PAGE 6

Retirement Can Be Very Interesting! Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day, Margaret my wife and I went into town to do some shopping. When we came out, there was a traffic warden writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and I said, 'Come on, man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?' He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a rude name and he glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn-out tyres. So Margaret called him an even worse name and when he finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first he started writing more tickets. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home. We like to do something different every day! An elderly couple had long retired and the husband took up fishing and spent many happy hours on the lake in his little boat. One afternoon he returned the boat to their lakeside cottage after fishing and decided to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, his wife decided to take the boat out herself and after motoring out for a short distance, she anchored, put her feet up, and began to read her book. The peace and solitude was magnificent until along came a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulled up alongside the woman and said, 'Good Afternoon, Ma'am. What are you doing?' Reading a book,' she replied, (thinking, 'isn't that obvious?') 'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informed her. 'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.' 'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and prosecute.' The old lady was aghast and said 'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' 'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden. 'That's true,’ she said, ‘but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.' 'Have a nice day ma'am,' he said, and left. MORAL: never argue with a woman who reads. It's very likely she can also think!
Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. Answers on page 28

A Bit Of Monty Python Fun – Supposedly! This is a piece that has been floating around the Internet for a while and was purportedly written by the great John Cleese. That fact has never actually been confirmed but it is funny enough to be his work. We thought we’d like to share it with all those who haven’t yet seen it but just in case it offends anyone who doesn’t like having nationalities stereotyped then we apologize in advance. We would like to point out, however, that it’s really only a bit of fun!
Security Levels Raised Following Political Unrest Around The World. The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pixxxd Off" to "Let's get the Baxxxxds." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and PAGE 10
"Change Sides." The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is having NATO pull out of Brussels. The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level. A final thought "Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC.

Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 EcoBoost 150 5 door. Having checked out the Vauxhall Astra last month we felt it only right to give the other top seller in this country – the Ford Focus – the chance to also stake its claims. We selected the Focus Zetec 1.6 and quickly discovered that the latest model has a cleaner and more environmentally friendly engine range; stepped up comfort levels; greater focus on entertainment and safety and considerable improvements in build quality so the first reaction was extremely favourable. On closer examination, the buttons on the gear lever, a less responsive feel to the diesel models in relation to the petrol ones and the lack of a three door option relegated it slightly but it nevertheless remains one of the mainstays of British motoring that has consistently been at or near the top of the sales charts since its introduction in 1998. The third generation version promises to repeat this success with a raft of new technology, greater levels of refinement and a cleaner, greener range of engines. From the beginning the Focus has been renowned for its bold styling and though it has gradually had its exterior softened over the years, the new design has returned to PAGE 12
its angular, geometric roots. But that’s not all that’s changed. Along with many of its competitors, Ford has concentrated this time on green motoring and an increased focus on safety with the inclusion of more economical engines and a premium-level safety kit that includes lane departure warning, auto brake function for collision avoidance in cities and an in-car camera that reads speed limit signs. Performance-wise the emphasis on increased refinement and comfort has not diminished the old attributes of speed and reaction but with this model they are definitely more polished. Substantial revisions to the Focus' fascia have resulted in easer to read dials, more sensibly located minor controls and a general, all-round improvement. With its bold exterior styling and generous helpings of comfort and safety equipment, Ford has certainly improved the Focus. It's a much more competitive market than in 1998, yet this Focus stays relevant despite the availability of mini people carriers and crossovers. For some it's likely to exceed expectations, especially buyers seeking to downsize.

Why Some Men Have A Dog And No Wife Have you ever thought how sad it is when a man dispenses with the idea of having a wife and sticks with a dog instead. Recent research (by us) has thrown up these really good reasons why! 1. The later you are the more excited your dogs are to see you. 2. Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name. 3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor. 4. A dog's parents never visit. 5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across. 6. Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk. 7. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing 8. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, "If I died, would you get another dog?" 9. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and sell them. 10. A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a pervert. 11. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don't get mad. They just think it's interesting. And finally, to test the theory that a dog really is a man’s best friend try this: Lock your wife and your dog in the garage for an hour. Then open the door and see who's happy to see you. We rest our case.
Test your knowledge.

EAT MORE – WEIGH LESS Yes, it does sound a little preposterous but if you eat the right things then research shows you can eat as much as you like without any damage to the waistline. That’s because our bodies measure fullness by the physical bulk of food and particularly how much it weighs rather than the amount of calories of fat it contains. So try these really healthy foods that fill you without fattening. Broccoli. 24calories and .8g fat per 100g. One of our favourite vegetables, it is not only really low in calories but also provides you with some special cholesterol-lowering benefits if you cook it by steaming. The fibre-related components in broccoli bind together better with bile acids in your digestive tract when they've been steamed. This binding process helps to excrete bile acids, and the result is a lowering of your cholesterol levels. Carrot & Coriander Soup. 43calories and 2.2g fat per 100g. Soup is an excellent appetite suppressant with a hunger-satisfying combination of liquids and solids. Water is the ultimate low calorie, high volume food, so soup can fill you without adding to your waistline. Salad Leaves. 22calories and 1g fat per 100g. Salad leaves have barely any calories but can take up space in your tummy and curb your appetite as a result. If, however, you dress your salad make sure you use low calorie dressings. Celery and Cucumber. Less than 10calories per 100g. These are 95per cent water and great for snacking on because of the satisfying ‘crunch’ factor. Try teaming with salsa for a really tasty, hunger fighting but low calorie snack. Cantaloupe Melon. 19calories and 0.1g fat per 100g. It’s sweet, delicious and packed with beta-carotene which mops up cell-harming free radicals. All types of melon are low in calories, though so choose whichever you prefer. Berries. 25calories and 0.3g fat per 100g. Sweet and luscious berries like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are a calorie snip and they’ll satisfy your craving for something sweet. They’re also packed with skin-friendly anthocyanin antioxidants. Apples. 47calories and 0.1g fat per 100g. Apples have two bulking elements that make them filling. Water and plenty of soluble fibre which helps prevent the blood-sugar spikes that lead to craving. The moral of all this is to try and stick with healthy foods that keep you feeling fuller for longer to get that trim waistline! Gardening Tips for AUGUST Essential Jobs Checklist For August
Take cuttings of shrubby herbs and tender perennials Water all containers every day and feed regularly Trim hedges Treat vine weevil with biological control Pinch out tomato sideshoots Prune raspberries and gooseberries Mow the lawn before going on holiday
Flower Garden
Take cuttings of tender perennial, such as verbenas, argyranthemums, fuchsias,
salvias and pelargonium’s. Dip the cuttings into a hormone rooting compound before inserting them into small pots of half and half peat and perlite or peat and silver sand. Water in well and keep the cuttings in a cold frame or even on warm windowsill out of direct sunlight. They should root within eight weeks and can then be potted up in MultiPurpose compost and overwintered in a heated greenhouse or on a bedroom windowsill Trim lavender bushes once the flowers are past their best. If you like to attract wildlife to your garden you may prefer to leave the seed heads as goldcrest adore the seeds and may visit in early autumn If you have camellias, azaleas or rhododendrons water them well in dry weather otherwise the flower buds for next year may not develop properly. To boost growth feed them with Scotts Liquid Ericaceous Feed. If you have lime in your soil you may find that the foliage of these particular plants is turning yellow. The lime in the soil stops the plants taking up trace elements, particularly iron. You can alleviate the condition by applying sulphate of iron. In severe cases it is probably better to grow lime-hating plants in containers using composts. Late-flowering bulbs such as nerines, agapanthus, schistylis and sternbergia will appreciate watering at this time of year. .The reason is that all these plants come from parts of the world with summer rains. If they go dry they may not flower well This is the month to plant the lovely, but temperamental madonna lily. It prefers limy soil and should be planted not more than 5 cm (2 inches) deep
Roses
Stop feeding roses now. Feeding will encourage soft growth that won't have a chance to ripen before the winter. It will then be prone to diseases. Rambler roses that have finished flowering can be pruned now. Cut the long old stems that flowered this year, but leave non-flowering shoots as these should bloom next year. PAGE 20
THE EYE MAGAZINE - AUGUST 2012 2011
Containers & Hanging Baskets
Before you go on holiday try and arrange for a friend or neighbour to come round and water your containers. If they can't come every day, take steps to cut down on watering requirements by moving all containers and hanging baskets out of the sun as far as possible. Clay pots can be stood on trays filled with wet gravel. If you have a very elaborate summer display with window-boxes and hanging baskets, you should consider installing an automatic watering system controlled by a timer.
Vegetable Garden
Pick courgettes regularly while they are small Pinch out the tips of the climbing shoots of runner beans
once they reach the tip of their supports Sow lettuce, winter spinach, spring cabbage and Chinese cabbage outside.
Herb Garden
Continue to take cuttings of woody herbs including hyssop, lavender, rosemary, curry plant, rue and sage. Dip the cuttings into hormone rooting compound before inserting them into small pots of equal parts peat and silver sand or peat and perlite. It's a good time of year to divide congested clumps of chives. Dig them up and divide in small clumps of about five or six bulbs. Replant with a handful of multi purpose compost. Fruit Garden Plant rooted strawberry runners now to ensure a good crop next year. If you leave this much later the crop will be severely reduced Continue to prune raspberries and tie in new shoots Prune gooseberries, shortening the main stems and side shoots to five leaves
In the Greenhouse
Vine weevil has become a common pest in greenhouses and containers in recent years. The adult weevil is dull dark grey in colour, slightly mottled. It comes out at night and chomps away at the margins of leaves. But it is the larvae that cause the real damage by burrowing down into the compost and devouring the roots of plants. By the time the gardener spots that the plant is not flourishing it may well be too late. If you see wilting leaves remove the plant from its pot and have a look. The grubs are about 1 cm (1/2 inch) long, curved and creamy white in colour with brown heads. They should be destroyed on sight. Biological control by nematodes is now available and should be used this month. Follow the instructions carefully. Continue to mist plants and check shading Continue to feed tomato plants each week with Liquid Tomato Feed

Movie Review - Dark Knight Rises
The final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s ground breaking, epic Batman trilogy has arrived, and it does not disappoint. The story line is based eight years on after the ending of Batman The Dark Night, as a new terrorist leader, Bane (Tom Hardy), overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight (Christian Bale) resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy. Words struggle to describe how brilliant this epic conclusion is to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. He has managed to position the superhero franchise up and above anything of its kind – its intelligence, precision and consistently solid writing make it work in every way possible. The vast amount of characters are all given perfect weight across the film. You really do get the feeling of absolute chaos in this film, and you constantly question how the dark knight will rise and save Gotham from absolute destruction. Bane is easily Batmans’ toughest adversary. The Dark Knight Rises rides on stellar cinematography, adrenaline filled action, an epic musical score, grand scale, intelligent writing, a totally committed cast and, as he has continued to show, powerful direction from the main man behind the camera. The accusations that are surfacing in regards to the characterization of the film highlights the fact people are skimming the surface. His techniques are ingenious. Watch the film again, and watch very carefully what Nolan does – you need to view it outside the square. He takes it to the next level in The PAGE 24
Dark Knight Rises, making the plot twist in particular, highly plausible. All I can say are positives about this film, and I cannot keep talking without giving away information or "spoilers". This film gave me a particular feeling, a feeling I only receive from films of a certain class. I was even chanting at the screen at several points, as I felt so strongly for the characters. This is the fourth film by Chris Nolan to do this to me – I admit, I may have a particular bias towards him. There is something about his filmmaking style (encompassing everything on offer) that resonates with me, but one cannot pass up the quality of this film. More films, particularly big-budget, need to be made like this – audiences are not stupid, and you can learn more about yourself and society with such an in depth look at the psychology of human beings, as well as the formalist quality of the medium of film. Christopher Nolan has managed to conclude this epic Batman trilogy, making it one of, if not the best, most consistent high quality film series of all time. Intelligently made, epic and delves in to the depths of the human psyche to progress the narrative, characterization and brave statements of humans and society. A standing ovation is well-deserved. The film stars Christian Bale (The Prestige), Tom Hardy (Inception), Michael Caine (Alfie), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Mysterious Skin), Marion Cotillard (Contagion) and Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption).

Stop arson across Cleveland A new campaign aimed at putting a stop to arson across Cleveland was launched by Cleveland Fire Brigade in July.
Figures released by the Brigade show that last year (2011/12) arson was responsible for three-quarters of fire-related incidents and cost the local economy £16.7m – an average of £321,524 per week. The launch of the campaign coincides with the start of the summer school holidays when the number of arson incidents normally increase. The campaign was launched in Eston Hills – the scene of 240 fires last year - firefighters came together with Cleveland Police and council neighbourhood officers to highlight the dangers of arson. In total last year there were 3,029 arson
incidents across Cleveland and Phil Lancaster, the Brigade’s Director of Community Protection, said that firefighters will be working flat out with other key organisations to continue to drive the figures down. The Fire Brigade need the support of our communities to stop starting fires in the first place and to report any suspected arsonists confidentially by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You can also sign our e-petition to say ‘enough is enough’ at www.clevelandfire.gov.uk/stop.” This campaign includes a full programme of diversionary activities for youngsters over the summer, community patrols, posters, leaflets, radio advertising and online activities. THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 38
BRING IT ON Despite last month’s observations on the strength of this season’s Championship we’re already looking forward to the start with some excellent signings in place and a decent win in our first pre-season friendly. OK, it was only Falkirk but a win of any sort is good, especially with seven goals spread across the team. The alarmist in me is also pointing out that we conceded three goals but since one was from the penalty spot and we were down to ten men for one of the others it’s not as bad as it sounds. Besides, neither Jason Steele nor Jonathan Woodgate played so their presence will strengthen the defence for the start of the season. Incidentally, It was nice to see Jason get half a game for the GB side at the Riverside against Brazil and he wasn’t responsible for either of the goals that night. Get your money on Brazil, though. They looked excellent. The acquisitions of Woodgate and Stuart Parnaby will certainly prove to be excellent pieces of business provided they can stay fit for reasonable periods of the season. Both have question marks against them on the injury front, but they’re both ‘Boro lads and are delighted to be here which is an important factor in itself. What they do offer, though, is loads of experience that should help nurture some of the exciting younger players introduced into the team through the latter part of last season. And with Tony Mowbray already stating that Woodgate and Rhys Williams will be his first choice centre backs the defensive side of the team looks highly promising. On the goals front – probably the most disappointing aspect of last season – we’ve managed to keep top scorer Marvin Emnes but some of the kids could also be a factor this year. Luke Williams scored a couple against Falkirk and Curtis Maine looked a good prospect with a couple of great goals last term. Barry Robson chipped in with eight, of course, and he’s now departed but hopefully Lucas Jutkiewicz will live up to the reputation he arrived with (once he’s fit, of course,) and Scott McDonald owes us a bit more consistency. Emmanuel Ledesma also contributed against Falkirk and it would be nice to see both him and Grant Leadbitter provide the firepower from midfield. You never really know until the season gets under way, of course, but the signs so far are enough to give us at least a bit of optimism. Progress in the Capital One Cup (league cup) against Bury on the 11th and a win on the opening day proper at Barnsley would be a great start. Bring it on and we hope all you ‘Boro fans have a great season! PAGE 30
