Welcome to the September Edition of

“The Eye Magazine”

There’s always something on the horizon.

In This Month’s Issue Set For An Arresting Career Page 4 Ice Age 4 Movie Review Page 8 Mazda MX5 Car Review Page 12

It would be very easy after the spectacular couple of months we’ve just had to feel a little deflated now that most of the very special events we have witnessed as a nation are over. Even if we look at the immediate future on a more selfish note we find that the holiday season is all but finished and the summer we never had is just about gone. So what do we have to look forward to apart from long, dark, cold winter nights and numerous repeats on the telly? Well, let’s have a closer look. For a start there’s autumn – the season, as John Keats put it, ‘of Mists and mellow fruitfulness.’ In this issue we’ve agreed with his observations and given you recipes for one of nature’s most prolific, yet humble vegetables, the courgette. Delicious! There’s also the football season, with ‘Boro’s first home game producing two spectacular candidates for ‘goal of the season’ - both scored by graduates of Dave Parnaby’s fantastic academy production line. Much more to come, of course, but you need to be there! And finally – dare I say it – there’s Christmas and if previous years are anything to go by, most of you women have already started planning for it while the kids are already dreaming about it.

Great September Food Ideas Page 24

The moral of all that is that no matter how down you might feel there’s always something on the horizon!

THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 39

Ashleigh is set for an arresting career A Redcar & Cleveland College student who had never dreamed of going to university, is on the verge of her dream career in the Police Force.

Ashleigh Harvey, 20, secured a place studying Crime and Policing at Canterbury Christ Church University following successful completion of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services Level 3 course. Ashleigh initially enrolled at the College on the Public Services Level 2 course and found a subject that she enjoyed and thrived in, which led to her progression onto the Level 3 certificate. She said: “I would never have considered going to university when I joined the college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my future, but after doing well in my BTEC I knew that I wanted to go and study further. “The support I have gained from the college has given me the determination and confidence to prove to everyone that I can do well, and I am so excited for the future, once I’ve completed my degree I want to join the police.” Stuart Taylor, Public Services lecturer, said: “It is great that Ashleigh has done so well at the college and now has the chance to go to university, her enthusiasm and passion in public services means that she is destined to do well. “I have no doubt that she will be a hard working and conscientious student who will succeed in her chosen pathway.”

Holding An Event?

Ashleigh has developed into a hard working and driven student, who was a member of many of the college’s clubs and societies, including the Kayaking club, the Student Council and the NUS Conference. She also became a Student Ambassador in 2009 and has remained a dedicated representative ever since. So Many Everlasting Memories Ask anyone who was around at the time and they’ll be able to tell you where they watched the 1966 World Cup Final between England and Germany. They’ll also be able to recount the still vivid memories of Bobby Moore lifting the trophy, Nobby Styles skipping about without his front teeth and Kenneth Wolstenholm’s legendary “They think it’s all over – it is now!” It was a marvelous tournament with the main highlight being that it was here and we won! That was forty six years ago, of course, but I don’t mind betting that in the same number of years hence we’ll still all be able to remember the double delight as Mo Farrah was first through the tape, not once but twice; the delight amid the teardrops on Jessica Ennis’ face as her gold medal was placed round her neck; that wonderful little ‘I love you Mum’ as Gemma Gibbons won her Judo Silver Medal and yet more tears as Sir Chris Hoy became the most prolific British Gold Medal Winner of all time. Yet despite these golden moments the most wonderful aspect of an absolutely fantastic Olympic Games is that there are so many more individual moments too numerous to mention in a single article. You really would need a book! The entire games were a triumph for British enthusiasm, British organization and a British people who performed impeccably throughout the seventeen days to show the rest of the world how it should be done. From the amazing opening ceremony to the fireworks at the end it was wonderful viewing that had us watching from morning till night. And you simply didn’t care how many times the marvelous BBC showed the highlights because they were worth seeing over and over again. And for those of us who – like Oliver Twist - simply wanted more, there were suddenly the Paralympic Games to marvel over, highlighting the unbelievable courage and determination of a group of people who simply haven’t allowed life’s adversities to get them down. Sadly, despite the wonder of it all, there are still the cynical few who will criticize the amount of money spent and the number of TV hours devoted to both versions of the Olympics. Because this is a democracy and we have freedom of speech, those people are fully entitled to both their opinion and their ability to express it. If, however, you are one of them and you found yourself unable to extract any joy from the last month you really do have my deepest sympathy. PAGE 6

Ice Age 4 Review

Over the school holidays I took younger members of my family to the cinema to see the latest in the Ice Age series, Ice Age Continental Drift. In this latest release to the Ice Age franchise sees our favourite characters Manny, Diego, and Sid (Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo) embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world. Not much has changed over the whole Ice Age franchise, which began back in 2002. What has come evident though is that many elements from other animated franchises – particularly Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and DreamWorks Madagascar series – have been integrated in to this new Ice Age film. The iconic element of Fox’s commercially successful film franchise is the character Scrat, the spiral like character, and he never ceases to provide entertainment. The opening sequence of the film is hysterical, but it quickly dissolves in to the filmmaker’s rushed, heavy-handed and awkward push at family ideals and over-parenting. There is nothing particularly wrong with this, but it is so dumb-hearted, the film is clearly aimed at more children than ‘all audiences’ as Pixar so consistently manage. Children, though, are not stupid. Children can interpret just as much understanding from films if the material is subtle, particularly when it comes to a huge

Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. Answers on page 25

part of life – ‘the family’. I also feel this has been done and dusted over and over again, and a lot can be done with these well-drawn characters. Ice Age: Continental Drift does provide many scenes of laugh-out-loud humour, mainly slapstick but appropriately delivered, as well as an interesting visual design. What is quite clear from this instalments is that the franchise has well and truly run its course. The fresh ideas are gone. Not visually of course, but in terms of narrative and ideology – it is so awkwardly depicted here that you can tell the filmmakers are uncertain. They make sure they appeal to a very typical, conservative story. Nonetheless, the film provides light entertainment, the main reason why people will head to the cinema. The heavy-handed conservatism and pedestrian narrative of Ice Age: Continental Drift shows that the franchise and run its course, but audiences will find entertainment in the creative visuals, and their integration with laugh-out-loud slapstick humour. Scrat is always hilarious, but if you have seen the first one though, then you have seen everything you need to see from the series.

Home-spun Philosophy When my wife and I are on a day out or on holiday she spends countless hours in the little knick-knack shops looking for suitable presents or little souvenirs to take home. While she diligently searches I have discovered the perfect way to pass the time. I read all the homespun philosophy that appears on items such as fridge magnets. I’m not ashamed to admit I love some of them and on my last expedition wrote them down so I could share them with you. I hope you like them! To be old and wise you first have to be young and stupid. How long a minute is depends on which side of the bathroom door you’re standing. If ASDA are lowering their prices EVERY DAY, how come nothing’s free yet? A truly happy person is the one who enjoys the scenery on a ten mile detour. Some mistakes are far too much fun to make only once. A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is the one who found him. What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it’s all about? I owe, I owe, so off to work I go. Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll sit in a boat and drink beer all day. When you’re right no-one remembers. When you’re wrong no-one forgets. It’s probably true that money can’t buy happiness but it can buy chocolate which is just about the same thing. I did try yoga once but I soon found out that stress is much less boring. If at first you don’t succeed, then sky diving is obviously not for you The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that you’ve got it made. Democracy – the concept that allows two idiots to out-vote a genius. I cook with wine all the time. Sometimes I even add it to the food. They say wine improves with age. Weird that! I improve with wine. My wife just said I never listen. At least I think that’s what she said. Alcohol is the answer. Sorry, I can’t remember the question. Be nice to your kids. They’ll probably choose your nursing home. A celebrity is someone who works hard to become famous then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized. Be careful. The light at the end of the tunnel may be a train coming.

And finally, saving the best ‘till last …. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are dull. Some have weird names and they are all different colours. And yet .. they all exist very nicely in the same box. PAGE 10

For The Best Reliability – The Mazda MX-5

According to this year’s annual survey of more than 50,000 cars conducted by ‘What Car?’ in conjunction with ‘Warranty Direct’ Mazda’s MX-5 sports car is the most reliable car in Britain. That’s because MX-5 models built since 2005 recorded a failure rate of just four per cent – the lowest of all cars in the 2012 survey and infinitely more favorable than the nearest competitor at 15 per cent. An amazing 96% of this particular model was found to have been fault-free, while MX-5 owners also benefit from the lowest repair costs with an average repair bill of just a hundred and ninety five pounds. The survey calculated a vehicle’s reliability from factors like the number of times it fails, the cost of repair, the average time it spends off the road being repaired, its age and its mileage. So how does the 2012 model compare with its predecessors? We all know that Mazda hasn't changed the basic design of the car since it introduced the original version in 1989 because low weight, moderately powerful engines and excellent handling are what the MX-5 is all about. The latest model, however, is bigger, safer and slightly more powerful than its predecessors and has more PAGE 12

in the way of creature comforts. Storage space isn't bad considering the size of the car, but you'll still need to pack carefully for a long weekend away. Handling is as good as ever though, with the MX-5 responsive and agile thanks to its superbly accurate steering. It's also very nimble on the road. The 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines have 124bhp and 158bhp respectively, which is just enough to make the Mazda into a speedy little sports car. The 1.8 has a five-speed gearbox, while the 2.0-litre has a six-speed and both have a short, accurate action that makes it easy to find the right gear. We did, however, find that the automatic gearbox with wheel-mounted paddles is not as effective as the manual. The 2.0-litre models are arguably more fun to drive as they are fitted with a limited-slip differential. For its size the car is more comfortable than you'd expect and travels well over rough surfaces with only minimum vibration. The tall seat backs offer protection from the elements and help keep wind noise to a minimum when the roof is down. There's not a great deal of noise with the roof up, either,

£ although the soft-top version is slightly noisier than the folding hard-top Roadster Coupe. The entry-level 1.8-litre model doesn't come with stability control, which means it's more likely to catch unwary drivers out in slippery conditions. All other versions come with it as standard though, as well as side, driver and passenger airbags. A reinforced windscreen frame and roll over hoops are also standard. Space is naturally limited with the 150-litre boot just about big enough for a couple of soft bags for a weekend away. The car's fabric hood is extremely easy to fold down - just release a couple of clips and drop it back - and it doesn’t eat into the boot space. The folding hard-top Roadster Coupe model is more secure, and is electrically operated, folding away in around 12 seconds. It is then cleverly stowed behind the cabin, leaving the 150-litre boot space unaffected. There are a number of useful storage compartments throughout the cabin as well as four cup holders – more than enough for a two-seater car! Running costs vary with the 1.8 achieving around 39.8 mpg and emissions of 167g/km. The 2.0 Sport offers less mpg and higher emissions so road tax will obviously be higher. The MX-5 is well priced, though, and you won’t find a convertible that offers so much fun for a similar price. Resale values are also reasonable because the MX-5 is extremely popular with second-hand buyers.

50 Shades - Book Review Readers of the Twilight series might find many similarities within the plot and characters of such novels since Fifty Shades was originally written being a fan fiction for Meyer's series. However, though E.L. James closely shadows certain Twilight aspects, the trilogy ultimately tells a unique tale of forbidden love between a deeply flawed, innocent youngster and a man with "special requirements". That is the story in a nutshell. Really. Okay, hence the 'forbidden' part is derived not from Christian Grey to be a sparkly deer-eating vampire, but a man with "special sexual needs" and has a taste for dominatrix, and unlike Bella, Ana isn't facing quitting her humanity, but instead to embrace her sexuality in its kinky glory. Besides that, though, it is your typical Romeo and Juliet tale. Like in the Twilight series, I loved watching the heroine, Ana Steele, grow from timorous to tenacious. These books allow women to reminisce about first loves and cringe over the struggles to grow from shy teens to confident young women. Equally reading how Christian Grey, Ana's love interest, devolve from the rich, domineering sex-god, to a broken but healing, lovable man. The 1st fantasy of looking for a rich, handsome, and dangerous lover is fun, but realizing that many of that time period it really is activities like fantasy is comforting plus more realistic. As someone who enjoyed the Twilight series, I was a little bit disappointed to begin with because of the level of similarities between your main characters and plots. However, when I read further into the books, E.L James (the author) started to divert more and more from fan fiction until what she ultimately created was her own story-a little bit cliche, but still fun by its own merits. A number of the best components of the books were when James was finding pleasure in her very own humour and creativity, mainly the niche lines from the emails sent between Ana and Christian, that have been always either rib-cracking funny or eye-poppingly shocking. So even though the sex was great, ultimately it had been the characters with miles of heartbreaking backstory and those components of creativity and humour that keep readers enthralled. Bottom line: Should you be a grownup who liked the Twilight series and are also at ease with some untraditional sex scenes, you probably will get sucked into this series. If you are looking for a good quick read for an afternoon or evening or a long weekend, then you may find Fifty Shades of Grey a good choice. PAGE 14

The Hypocrisy of Men! There are times when – as a man – I despair of the antics and attitudes of some of my peers in regard to the fairer sex. There is no doubt that some of you men reading the following observations will chuckle and agree with the sentiments but we men really should respect women much more than we do.... (my wife told me to say that!) This morning on the motorway, I looked over to my right and there was a woman in a brand new VW doing 75Mph with her face right up to her rear view mirror putting on her eyeliner! I looked away for a couple of seconds and when I looked back she was halfway over into my lane, still working on the makeup. As a man, I don't scare easily but she frightened me so much I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the meat pie out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel it knocked my mobile phone away from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs, splashing and scalding my private parts. It also ruined the phone, soaked my trousers and disconnected me from an important call. BLOODY Women Drivers!! An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anaesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. "Yes, Dad, what is it?" "Don't be nervous, son,” said the old man. “Do your best, and just remember, if it doesn't go well and I die, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife...."

the swarm of rats had grown to hundreds, and they were all squealing and screeching in a very menacing way. He ran on towards the beach, and as he ran, he looked behind him and saw the rats now numbered in their thousands, and so, very concerned, he ran down to the pier and threw the bronze Rat far out into the water. Amazingly, the real rats jumped into the water after it and were all drowned. The man walked back to relate all this to the shop owner, who said: 'Ah, you've come back for the story then?' 'No,' said the tourist, 'I came back to see if you've got bronzes of an illegal immigrant, an MP, a Manchester United supporter, anything French and my wife!' An old man is sitting on the porch with his wife sipping a glass of whiskey. Suddenly, his wife hears him say softly “I love you so much and I don’t know how I could live without you.” Both flattered and embarrassed she turned to her husband and says “Was that you talking or the whiskey?” “It was me,“ he said, “talking to the whiskey!”

Two blokes, one old, one young, are pushing their carts around Asda when they collide. The older man says to the young man, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife and I A tourist walked into a Brighton antique shop wasn't really paying attention to where I was and noticed a very life-like bronze statue of a going." rat. It had no price tag, but it was so striking The young chap says, "That's OK, because it's a that he decided to buy it anyway. He took it to coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too, and I the owner and said: 'How much is this bronze can't find her. I'm getting a little desperate." rat?' The owner replied: 'It's £12 for the rat, and The old guy says, "Well, maybe I can help you £100 for the story.' find her, what does she look like?" The tourist gave the owner his £12 and said: The young guy says, "Well, she is 27 yrs. 'I'll just take the rat, you can keep the story.' old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom... As he walked off down the street, he noticed wearing no bra, long legs, and is wearing a that a few real rats had crawled out of the mini skirt. What does your wife look like?' sewers and begun following him. This was “It doesn’t matter,” says the old bloke. Let’s just a little disconcerting, so he started to walk look for yours." a little faster, but within a couple of blocks PAGE 16

Gardening Tips for SEPTEMBER Essential Jobs Checklist For September

 Buy spring bulbs for next year  Plant prepared bulbs for Christmas flowering  Dead-head roses and trim back tall stems  Harvest sweetcorn and onions  Rake lawn to remove debris and apply autumn dressing  Continue to plant containerised trees and shrubs  Keep feeding fish in ponds  Sow new lawns

Flower Garden

 Buy spring bulbs for next year. Most bulbs, including daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and

small bulbs are best planted this month or in early October. Tulips are better planted towards the end of October.  Give evergreen hedges a final trim to ensure they are neat for the winter.  Now’s the time to go around your garden collecting seeds from perennials and annuals. Collect seed heads in paper bags and leave them in a warm place to dry for a few days, before cleaning and storing in small envelopes. Some gardens that open to the public offer seed-collecting days – a great way to find something unusual. Most seeds are best sown in spring.  Sweet pea lovers may find that sowing seed in autumn produces stronger plants. Do not soak the seeds as they are liable to rot. Use Seed and Potting Compost and sow the seeds in root trainers, sweet peas tubes, pots or trays. It has been found that dark coloured seeds germinate well in fairly damp compost, but pale seed require compost that is only just moist. Cover the containers with glass or put them in a propagator and keep at around 15 C (59 F). When the seedlings appear transfer them to a cold frame. Pinch out the growing tips when the plants are about 10 cm (4 inches) high.

Roses

 Shrub roses and ramblers can easily be propagated from stem cuttings at this time of year. Take a length of stem about 30cm (12 inches) long and trim it off just below the bottom leaf. Remove the soft tip just above a root joint. Take off all but the top two or three leaves and push the cuttings into a well dug trench in the garden to about half their length. They should be left for 12 months to root and develop.  If rambler and climbing roses have got a bit out of hand, spend a bit of time tying them in.

Containers & Hanging Baskets

 Your summer bedding will probably still be looking so good that you can’t bear to throw it out yet. Keep them going until they look tired. Remember that you can overwinter many tender plants. Take them out of their pots and brush off most of the old compost so that you can trim back the roots. Also trim the top growth. Then place them in a tray with some damp, but not saturated peat, covering the roots and store them in a frost-free place.  When planting daffodils in containers its worth planting two layers of bulbs, slightly staggered one above the other. This will ensure a spectacular display. Plant the bulbs deeply enough to allow you to plant winter and spring bedding, such as winter pansies, primroses, violas and wallflowers on top.

Vegetable Garden

 Sweetcorn will be ready to harvest when the silks have turned from golden to brown. For the sweetest taste, cook them within minutes of cutting.  Ripe onions should be lifted carefully and laid out to dry before storing.  Continue to harvest runner beans and courgettes. Make sure you don’t leave runner and French beans too long otherwise they will be stringy and tough.  If you’re sowing out of doors this month you can speed up germination by putting a cloche over the seeds.

Herb Garden

 Parsley can be sown now for an early spring crop.  Tidy up your herb garden by dead-heading and trimming back perennials and

discarding annuals.

Fruit Garden

 Cover autumn-fruiting blackberries and raspberries with netting to keep off the birds, but check daily to ensure no animals or birds get trapped.  Pick early varieties of apples as soon as they’re ripe and eat them – they won’t keep.

Lawn

 Aerate the lawn with a fork or special tool then apply Autumn Lawn Food to nourish your lawn through the winter months.  You can continue to re-seed bare patches on your lawn. It’s also a good time of year to prepare the ground for sowing a new lawn, while the earth is still warm.

Visit The Open Day At Age UK Teesside’s Activity Centre And See How Easily Your Life Can Change For The Better! Since its move in March to excellent new premises at Teesside Athletic Club, the Age UK Teesside Activity Centre has continued to thrive, giving many older people the chance to enjoy both a varied and active lifestyle. Its importance cannot be over emphasized for while modern society offers many positive advantages there is still a real need for our more mature population to remain active members of their community for as long as possible. Age UK Teesside represents a wonderful opportunity for them to achieve that aim. To emphasize that fact, and to give everyone the chance to sample the superb facilities on offer, the Centre is holding an open day at the new premises on Green Lane, Redcar on Tuesday 25th September. On the day, visitors will find a varied, interesting and stimulating range of taster activities on offer with something to suit everyone. The Activity Centre offers Art & Craft sessions which give the more artistic members the chance to create something unique and useful. Those more interested in staying fit can enjoy laughter yoga and chair based exercise. For those who simply like to be entertained there are Bingo sessions, Quizzes, Lunch Clubs and dominoes. And if all those activities sound too strenuous, you can turn up each morning, read the paper and enjoy the refreshments that are provided throughout the day. In short, Age UK Teesside Activity Centre is the perfect way for anyone who may feel lonely or socially isolated to PAGE 20

enjoy both the company of their peers and the mental stimulation that inter-action with like-minded people provides. Perhaps the nicest aspect of Age UK Teesside’s aims is their belief that ‘older people’ means anyone over the age of 50. They recognise that early retirement is a feature of life today, and that - coupled with a longer life expectation - can sometimes lead to difficulties. Those difficulties, however, can be easily overcome and that’s why they encourage anyone who feels they fall into this category to come along and see how easy it is to change their lives for the better. Joining Age UK Teesside Activity Centre could really be the start of a whole new life. Even if you aren’t mobile it doesn’t matter because you can be transported both from and back to your home whether you are intending to stay just for the morning, the afternoon or the whole day. A freshly cooked two course lunch is also available every day, with the menu changing constantly and catering for differing dietary requirements. Age UK Teesside is a wonderful organisation that ensures that no-one needs to ever feel lonely or isolated again. But don’t just take our word for it. Go along to the open day and see for yourself how easy it is to turn your life around and start enjoying it to the full. You won’t be disappointed!

Great September Food Ideas For the increasingly rare breed of people who don’t think that food always comes in cardboard boxes we are proud this month to be able to present a couple of ideas for the kind of food that’s at its freshest and most plentiful at this time of year. September is an interesting month because we still have nearly all the summer food available but cooling weather trends and shorter days lead us towards the starchy comforts of cozy Autumn foods. One item that was always both present and fascinating was the humble courgette, and since it is comparatively cheap here are a couple of tasty and satisfying ways to serve it.

Courgettes with Lemon and Garlic.

Ingredients: 4 medium-sized courgettes; 30 ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling (optional) ; 15 ml lemon juice ; 15 ml finely grated lemon zest ; 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped Method: Preheat the grill to medium-high. Slice the courgettes lengthways, as thinly as possible. Brush with olive oil, then grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until they are lightly browned. Leave to cool. Place in a dish, then squeeze over the lemon juice, scatter over the zest and garlic, then season. Drizzle over a little more olive oil before serving. It makes a perfect side dish as part of a salad or used warm instead of more traditional vegetables.

Potato and Courgette Tortilla.

Ingredients: 400 gram(s) medium potatoes, peeled and halved width ways ; 30 ml olive oil : 1 medium onion, finely chopped ; 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ; 2 medium courgettes, trimmed and thinly sliced ; 8 large eggs; 50 gram(s) Parmesan cheese, finely grated; 1 bunch fresh thyme leaves, to garnish Method: Boil potatoes for 12-15 minutes, then cool, peel and slice thinly. Preheat grill to high. Heat olive oil in a large, non-stick frying pan and gently fry the onion and garlic until softened. Add the courgette and cook for a further 5 mins until lightly browned. Add the thinly sliced potato, turn over carefully to mix with courgette and onion. Whisk the eggs and stir in the cheese, Season with salt and black pepper. Pour the egg and cheese mix into the pan, give it a good shake so that the egg mix slips under the vegetables. Cook over a low heat for approx. 10 mins, without stirring until almost set. Place the frying pan under the grill and cook for 1-2 mins until top is set and golden. Serve warm, sprinkled with thyme.

How Lives Are Measured After the emotions of a fantastic Olympics I was lucky enough to come across this wonderful little story that maintained the lovely feel-good factor all those gold medals had fostered. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes and noticed a small boy, a bit ragged but clean, hungrily staring at a basket of freshly picked green peas. As I was paying for my potatoes I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the young boy. 'Hello Barry, how are you today?' H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good' 'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?' 'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.' 'Good. Anything I can help you with?' 'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.' 'Would you like to take some home for you and your ma?' asked Mr. Miller. 'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.' 'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?' 'All I got's my prize marble here.' 'Is that right? Let me see it', said Miller. 'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.' 'I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked. 'Not zackley but almost.' 'Tell you what. Take this bag of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble'. Mr. Miller told the boy. 'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.' Mrs. Miller, who had been serving me, said with a smile 'There are two other boys like him in our community, and all three are in very poor circumstances. No fathers, but mothers who have given their all to bring the boys up properly. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or PAGE 28

whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of something else for a green marble or an orange one when they come on their next trip to the store.' I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. And when – a short time later - I moved but I never forgot the story of Mr. Miller, the boys, and their bartering for marbles. Several years went by, and recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community. While there I learned that Mr. Miller had just died and his visitation was that evening. My friends wanted to go and I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet Mr. Miller’s relatives and to offer what words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two had nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke

THE EYE MAGAZINE - SEPTEMBER 2012 briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes. Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller and I told her who I was and reminded her of the story she’d told me those many years ago about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. 'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just said how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them and that they had eventually understood how much he had quietly done for them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about colour or size they had come to pay their debt. We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho.' With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband and resting underneath were three exquisitely polished red marbles. Like all great stories this one has a moral and it is that we will be remembered most of all by our kind deeds. It may be a cliché but it’s true that life isn’t measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath. So right now we would like to wish you a day of ordinary miracles :- a fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself; an unexpected phone call from an old friend; green traffic lights on your way to work; the fastest queue at the post office; a good singalong song on the radio; your keys found exactly where you thought you’d left them. Small things like these are the root of true happiness and let’s hope we can all find it.

Boro Super-Show Proves That Just A Few Days Is A Long Time In Football! Following the devastation of losing to Barnsley on the first day of a season in which we all had high hopes of a promotion challenge I’m pretty sure that those of us who attended the Tuesday night visit of Burnley did so with fear and trepidation. They had just beaten red hot promotion favourites Bolton and consequently began the game full of confidence. The inevitable happened, of course, and a combination of some week defending and a bit of decent finishing put us behind again. To the great relief of everyone present Nicky Bailey’s immediate response enabled us to go into half time on level terms and, frankly, lucky to do so. But what followed in the second half was the stuff of fairy tales. Two candidates for goal of the season sandwiched Burnley’s 84th minute equalizer. First Adam Reach hit a spectacular half volley that had the crowd on its feet and going wild. Shortly after that Luke Williams took the field and within a minute or two Burnley had equalised. Within another two minutes Williams became the hero of the night with a wonderful strike that gave us our first three points of the season. Under normal circumstances that would have sent us home happy enough but it was the results from elsewhere in the Championship that really put the icing on the cake. Apart from Blackpool, all Saturday’s winners either lost or drew and most of Saturday’s losers – including us of course – won, leaving the league pretty much on an even keel. It proved that in this league anyone can beat anyone and just like last season a couple of victories in a row will see teams shoot up the table. It’s very early days but if that’s the kind of thing we can achieve without last season’s top scorers McDonald and Emnes then there has to be a chance. My optimistic streak when it comes to ‘Boro was in full flow driving home and I decided that Saturday’s score line must have been the result of a bunch of strangers playing together for the first time but that given a few more weeks together they could develop into something a bit special. Some of the intricate passing throughout the second half, in fact, had already confirmed that view point. Looking at the results that night and seeing Crystal Palace go down 4-1 to Bristol City gives us the mouth-watering prospect of Palace visiting the Riverside in the very next game. At the time of writing that is a couple of days away but it’s going to be a huge test of whether we are able to create any kind of consistency. ‘Boro’s history suggests it’s going to be a dour draw or a shock defeat because that’s usually the way we follow up a spectacular victory. I firmly believe, however, that Tony Mowbray’s all out attacking policy could be the catalyst that will eventually eliminate that kind of scenario. And while we can’t rely on the kids to do it consistently because they are, after all, still only kids, the power they put behind those two goals suggests they have an enormous amount to offer and as the season unfolds I hope we’ll see much more of them. So, an up and down sort of start, but if by the time you are reading this we have conquered both our inconsistency and Crystal Palace there could be a lot more enjoyment to come. Take heed you stay-away fans. You really don’t want to become bandwagon jumpers yet again! PAGE 30
