The Eye is delivered monthly to over 13,250 homes in Redcar & Marske.

We make no apology for jumping on the celebratory bandwagon of the most fantastic summer we can remember, especially since in our last three issues we have forecast how good it was likely to be. The Queen’s Jubilee was the catalyst that drew the whole country together and created the atmosphere from which the British Olympic success, the British Paralympic success, the Bradley Wiggins ‘Tour de France’ triumph and the Andy Murray Grand Slam feel-good factor would be created. This summer it has been wonderful to be British. Whether you had anything directly to do with all the stuff that was going on was immaterial because you could take pride in the fact that it was your taxes that were contributing to these incredible events. And perhaps the most remarkable consequence is that what was originally seen as a series of British domestic events became a truly global celebration. It’s really difficult to see how we can follow all that but our suggestion is that we revert to the truly British traditions over the next few months. ‘Halloween’ and ‘Bonfire Night’ are on the way and in this issue there are a few guides to the best way to enjoy them. After that, however, is the biggest worldwide festival of all. And while we draw the line at playing Christmas Number One Hits in the office In October (as most of the large retail stores do) we nevertheless accept that this is - to quote one of the most endearing Christmas musical hits -‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.’ We don’t want to arouse you from the dreams of the summer you’ve just enjoyed, but there are only eighty or so days left to organize everything. You’d better start now. Happy Reading. The Eye is published by Media Eye (NE) Ltd, Unit 205, Innovation Centre, Corfu Way, Kirkleatham Business Park, Redcar, TS10 5SH. Tel: 01642 759064. 30 Great Years For The Redcar Half Marathon There is absolutely no doubt that - had they had the choice - the founders of the annual Redcar half marathon would have chosen this year above all others to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of this very special event. After the most wonderful British sporting summer we have ever enjoyed it was inevitable that more people than ever before would turn out to support the runners who do so much for so many excellent charities. On September 30th the Olympic spirit was very much alive on Redcar’s sea front. Organised by Tees Valley Leisure on behalf of Redcar and Cleveland Council, the event has attracted tens of thousands of entrants over three decades and created countless cherished memories. And this year’s race has most certainly been among the best. The new 13.1-mile, all-tarmac route was influential in producing some great performances and a fantastic boost for some wonderful charities. Some of the really worthwhile namess that were supported include ‘Zoe’s Place’ baby hospice, ‘Coatham House’ in Redcar, the ‘Mike Findley MND Fund’, the M.S Society, Teesside Hospice and TFM Radio’s Cash for Kids appeal. They – and many more charitable organizations - owe a great deal to the runners who supported them and their very generous sponsors. And while the event this year had to be moved to a later date because of work on the regeneration of Redcar, it gained a great deal from being able to follow on from the best Olympics ever. One really interesting aspect of this year’s run was that one of the least publicised charities – S.O.D.A (survivors of domestic abuse) had four men running for the cause. Usually domestic abuse charities are supported by predominantly women but at S.O.D.A they pride themselves on being different to the rest because they support both male and female victims. Having four males to support them this year was amazing. All round, though, it was an absolutely terrific day and we’d like to offer out congratulations to everyone who completed the race and made valuable revenue for some great causes. This summer of sport just gets better and better!

Engineering a bright future Redcar & Cleveland College has launched a new course for anyone who is looking to develop a career in the engineering and chemical industry. The Access to Higher Education Engineering Diploma offers a fast-track route to a higher-level study and is ideal for anyone who sees their future career in engineering, but does not have the appropriate qualifications. The course has been developed in partnership with local industry and is the first of its kind in the Tees Valley to offer units of study in Chemical Science, drawing upon the college’s relationship with major employers in the Tees Valley. Chris Coupland, Director of Engineering, CIT, International & Higher Education at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “This course is an ideal springboard for anyone who is thinking about developing their skills or retraining for a career in engineering. “Through our links with local employers, we have been able to tailor the course to include specific units of study in Chemical Science, which we know will be of massive benefit when they move onto higher levels of study and, ultimately, into employment.” Enrolment for the Access to Higher Education Engineering Diploma is underway now. You can find out more about the course by contacting the college’s Student Services team on 01642 473132 or by visiting www.cleveland.ac.uk. PAGE 6

The Joys of Technology We’ve all been through those irritating phone calls to helplines who’s function is purportedly to help us (the clue is in the title), yet how many times do we hang up feeling even more frustrated than when we made the call in the first place? We recently came across this lovely little piece that surely puts into words the way we all feel about this modern-day curse. Enjoy! Oh hecky thump and thumping heck, I’m climbing up the wall, ‘cos all I’m trying to do, you see, is make a little call. I’m sitting here and fuming, I really have no choice, but grit my teeth and listen to a disembodied voice. “We thank you for your patience” – that vanished long ago - “Your call’s important to us” – do we really think that’s so? But the thing that gets me going most and really makes me sick, is the meter racking up its costs with a bloody constant tick. Especially since I’m calling an 0871 that’s costing me a fortune but not providing any fun! Whoopee! Success at last folks, I hear a human

voice, but, no, hang on, just wait a bit – it’s the dreaded ‘option’ choice. Number one’s no good to me, nor number two and three, for they’ve no chance of taking me where I really want to be. Four and five are useless, too, so I click on number six, but it only gives more options so I’m really feeling sick. Finally, I reach at last a girl who says she’s Emma, so I explain to her at length the cause of my dilemma. “I’m sorry, I can’t help you,” and it’s not that I don’t care, it’s just you need someone else, I’ll transfer you to her.” I wait and wait and wait and wait – try not to feel rejected - until I hear a click that tells me I’ve been disconnected. With pounding heart and a head like lead, I finally admit defeat , so I make myself a cup of tea and something nice to eat. Later on, when I’ve calmed down and feel a little better, I’ll sit down in my comfy chair and WRITE A BLOODY LETTER!

The World Of Comedy – According To Tim Vine On 7 October 2004, Tim Vine broke the Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in an hour with 499, beating the previous record of 362. Each joke told had to get a laugh from the paying audience to count towards the record. He held the record until May 2005, when Australian comedian, Anthony "Lehmo" Lehmann told 549 jokes. We’ve absolutely no idea how they remember them all, but here’s a few of Vine’s offerings. The Grim Reaper came for me last night, and I beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death. A mate of mine recently admitted to being addicted to brake fluid. When I quizzed him on it he reckoned he could stop any time.... I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin, 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70!!! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. I was at an ATM yesterday when a little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over.

He says "The sex is the same but the ironing is building up!” I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor - she only had £1.20 in her purse. I woke up last night to find the ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing at the foot of my bed. At first I was afraid.......then I was petrified. A wife says to her husband you're always pushing me around and talking behind my back. He says what do you expect? You're in a bloody wheelchair.

I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you get reincarnated but must come back as a different creature. She said she would like to come back as a cow. The New Fiat 500 – Good Looking, Economical And Reliable. While economy in cars doesn’t always mean small, the Fiat 500 is a great example of how the two can be really well combined. For Fiat enthusiasts – and there are many around the United Kingdom – the arrival of the new version has been well worth the wait. This 2-door, 4-passenger car offers economy and reliability, whichever of the options of coupe, sports coupe, or convertible you choose and is available in 6 trims, ranging from the Pop Hatchback to the C Lounge. And considering all the challenges that have been met in building a car as narrow, short and tall as this one the end result is simply amazing with ride quality, stability and body control all excellent. The Fiat 500 has quirky good looks, a flexible engine and undercuts its rivals on price. It's also one of the safest super-minis around. Standard equipment at entry level is a 1.4-litre, I4, 101-horsepower engine and a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive, but a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The entry-level 1.4 petrol engine isn’t all that fast, but it’ll be quick enough for most 500 buyers. The PAGE 12

0.9 Twinair (turbocharged two-cylinder) engine is lively if you keep it above 2000rpm, while the turbocharged 1.4 petrols in the Abarth versions give real pace. There’s also a 1.3 diesel option, which gives adequate performance and is worth a look if you plan to do a lot of miles. Interior equipment is rather basic, coming with remote locking, a CD/MP3 stereo and electrically adjusting door mirrors, but little else. But while upgrading to Lounge trim is an expensive affair, the upgrade earns you aircon, alloys, Bluetooth, a split-folding rear seat and a fixed-glass roof. Twinair models have their own trims, with air-con standard in every one, and top-spec Twinair Plus models having climate control and smarter interior trim. You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the 500 is at its best when picking its way through crowded city streets because its small dimensions and light steering are perfect for the purpose. In less crowded situations, though, the 500 doesn’t offer too much pace and lacks the space and comfort you would want on a long journey. Wind and road noise also become increasingly evident as

THE EYE MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2012 speeds rise but they never get to an annoying level. The diesel engine is a little noisy at low speeds as well, but the 0.9 Twinair is the worst offender. It produces far too much noise and vibration. All models come with front, side and curtain airbags, plus one to protect the driver’s knees. These helped the car achieve a five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. Sadly, the entry models miss out on stability control. The driving position is upright, but it’s irritating that instead of adjusting the height of your seat, the lever on the side of your chair merely changes the angle of the base. The steering wheel doesn’t adjust for reach, either. Still, most of the controls are easy to use, and the all-round visibility is pretty good. There shouldn’t be any major complaints about front-seat space, and even the small rear seats will take a couple of adults for short journeys. The boot has enough room for a few shopping bags, but entry-level Pop models don’t have split-folding rear seats. Overall, though, the new 500 is a solid financial proposition and costs less to buy than many of its rivals. Cute good looks and retro styling

Solar power – the modern way to save on your heating bills. The use of energy from the sun to create electricity or pre-heat water for the home is an idea that is catching on fast and there are now many ways to introduce such a project into your own house to save on those high energy bills. Solar panels and water heating systems allow you to create clean, green energy, help to reduce climate change effects and, more importantly, cut down on the amount of gas and electricity you have to pay for. Before installing anything, however, it is essential to minimise your energy demand by ensuring your home is fully insulated and you are using energy efficient lighting and appliances. These are still the most cost effective ways of reducing your energy use. Different green energy technologies are more suited to some types of homes than others and you can find out whether solar power is right for you by using the Energy Saving Trust's energy generation selector. (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk). Solar panels, (PV Systems) as the name suggests, use energy from the sun to create electricity and require only daylight rather than direct sunlight, to generate electricity. When light shines on a solar panel, it creates an electric field across layers of silicon in the cell, causing electricity to flow; the greater the intensity of light, the greater the flow of electricity. Power can either be used immediately or linked back into the power grid. PV systems can be used for a building with a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees south. No other buildings or large trees should overshadow because if the roof surface is in shadow for parts of the day less electricity will be produced. Solar panels are not light and the roof must be strong enough to take their weight, especially if the panels are placed on top of existing tiles. A variety of shapes and colours is available including PAGE 14

grey 'solar tiles' that look like roof tiles and transparent panels that can be used on conservatories or glass to provide shading as well as to generate electricity. Most domestic systems are between 1.5 and 3 kilowatts (kW) and can produce around half a domestic property’s electricity requirements. Solar tiles cost more than conventional panels, and panels that are integrated into a roof are more expensive than those that sit on top. If you intend to do major roof repairs, it may be worth considering PV tiles, as they can offset the cost of roof tiles.

How solar panels can save you money

Producing your own energy could be cheaper than buying it from energy companies. In addition, you can also sell any excess energy you generate to energy companies, using Feed-in Tariffs (FITs). The FITs scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity you generate, as well paying you for any electricity you export to the national grid. The Energy Saving Trust’s website has more information about FITs. The solar panels most commonly installed by homeowners consist of eight panels and can generate up to 2.5kW. The Energy Saving Trust says these panels could generate about £700 a year from a Feed-in Tariff, as well as saving you about £100 a year on energy bills. In addition, you could make about £25 to £30 through selling unused energy back to the national grid.

Gardening Tips for October Essential Jobs Checklist For October

Bring in tender perennials, trim and store in a frost-free place Mulch your border with homemade compost Start a new compost heap Compost summer bedding and plant up containers with bulbs and winter bedding  Plant bulbs in the garden.

   

Flower Garden

 Continue to plant bulbs in the open garden. Enrich the soil in the planting hole with a

sprinkling of Bonemeal  This is also a good time of year to plant new shrubs and perennials. The warmth in the soil will help them to get quickly established. Be generous with the planting mixture and be sure to water in well in dry weather  October is a good time of year to move established evergreens and conifers. Get a friend to help and dig them up with the biggest rootball you can manage. Prepare the new planting site well with lots of your favourite planting mixture – make sure to include bonemeal to boost root formation. Then water in very well. You’ll need to continue for several weeks until the plant becomes established  Dig up dahlias as soon as frost blackens the foliage. Cut back the stems to about 10 cm (4 inches) and remove as much soil as possible before standing the plants upside-down for about a week to allow them to dry out. Store the tubers in boxes, covered with slightly damp peat. If you don’t have a frost-free greenhouse or shed, you can keep the tubers in a spare bedroom or unheated porch

Roses

 If blackspot or rust has been a problem try and pick off infected leaves as far as you can and dispose of them – don’t put them on the compost heap. If they fall to the ground and blow about they will spread the infections next year.

Containers

 As well as planting containers with bulbs and spring bedding, consider planting a couple with small evergreen shrubs to give a bit of structure and green through the winter months. Euonymus, ivies and dwarf conifers are ideal PAGE 18

THE EYE MAGAZINE - OCTOBER 2012

Going Green

 At this time of year the amount of material suitable for composting multiplies alarmingly. Summer bedding, trimmings from perennials and fallen leaves will all rot down, so don’t waste them. Use up all your existing homemade compost to mulch around established borders or to add to planting mixtures for new acquisitions. Then start a new compost heap. Always mix together the different materials – this helps decomposition. Whether you favour a purpose-made compost container or an open heap, you’ll find that the addition of a biological compost maker will help you produce high quality compost easily and cheaply.

Lawns

 New lawns can be laid or sown on well-prepared sites  Scarify established lawns with a rake, then aerate with a fork if you haven’t done it already. There’s still time to use Autumn Lawn Food

Green House

 Check through all pots that have been growing in the greenhouse or that have been brought in from the garden. Destroy any vine weevil larvae that you find  Stop watering tuberous begonias and allow the tops to die off. Then remove the tubers from the compost and store in a cool, dry place  Bring late-flowering pot-grown chrysanthemums into the greenhouse for some late colour  Wash shading off the windows and consider insulating your greenhouse with bubblepack

Vegetable Garden

 Harvest carrots and potatoes, making sure the crops are clean and dry before you put them into storage. Marrows can be stored once their skins have been hardened in the sun  Finish picking tomatoes before the plants become diseased. You can hang up the whole plant to ripen green trusses, or alternatively pick the fruit and ripen it individually. Or you could always make some green tomato chutney!

Fruit Garden

 Finish harvesting autumn-fruiting raspberries and cut down all the canes that have fruited this year PAGE 19

Spooky Goings on in Redcar With Halloween just around the corner we through we share with you a commonly known local ghost story at a home in at Alfred Street, Redcar, sent to us by a reader. At 2.00 am, one morning in 1963, Mrs Pamela Iredale, her brother Barry Gardner and her ninemonth baby fled their terraced house in Alfred Street, Redcar. Mrs Iredale said, quote: "I just couldn't stand it any longer.. I didn't believe in ghosts, but I wouldn't spend another night in that house for a fortune. I knew that an old lady had died there and I was used to hearing strange noises during the night, but thought nothing of them. Then the stairs began to creak as if someone was coming up them. For no apparent reason the baby's cot collapsed and the curtains fell to the floor. Then the living room door, which was fastened with a tight ball catch began opening and shutting. There were no draughts and on one occasion it slammed and opened continuously for half an hour. I was so scared I locked myself in the bathroom and stayed there until it stopped. After that I asked a girl friend to stay with me, but she said the house gave her the creeps and she moved out after a few days. Last night's happenings were the last straw. I had just gone to bed and my brother was just getting undressed in his room when I saw this old woman with a lighted candle. She was dressed in a grey frock and had white curly hair. I was petrified and called out to Barry. It wasn't a dream, I wasn't even asleep. The room became icy cold. I gathered up baby Colin and the three of us just fled the house. There is no way I will go back and live there again." The property's owner Mr George Smee of Yeatby, confirmed his wife had died in the house and she was a small grey haired lady.

Paul Recommends in Redcar

Jack Mannix Carpets Over 30 Years ago Jack Mannix Carpets opened its doors on November 1st 1981 at 171 High Street in Redcar. At the time Jack Mannix had over 25years of experience in his field working for another well-established Redcar business, Wetheralls before venturing out on his own to create his own very wellknown and extremely reputable Redcar based business. Jack Mannix Carpets & Flooring have always pride themselves on top quality products and excellent workmanship. It is this standard of excellence that lead to Jack supplying the carpet for the visit of ‘Pope John Paul ll’ when he visited the Racecourse at York in 1982. The Pope walked along Jack’s carpet before addressing over 190,000 people who had camped out for the event. You could say that Jack’s carpets are ‘recommended by royalty’. It is understandable that business took off instantly and grew even quicker, requiring them to move to much larger premises in 1983. Their new location, just a few doors up at 107 High Street ,Redcar has remained their home ever since as they grew from strength to strength. Jack stepped to the side and retired in 2009 leaving his son Paul to take the reins. Paul has continued to walk in his father’s PAGE 22

footsteps and made a great company even better. Paul said’ Jack is always popping in and still likes to know what’s going on’. Though Carpets are their core business, Paul Mannix has employed his expertise to widened the range of flooring available to include, Laminate, Karndean and Rugs. They continue to stock a huge range of Carpets and Flooring from Ulster, Axminster, Flotex, Karndean, Greendale ,Brintons, to name just a few. Jack Mannix Carpets and Flooring carry out contracts for both domestic and commercial customers, with no job too big or too small. Paul is proud to say that he has many happy commercial customers including TATA Steel, Cleveland Potash, Ramsdens and many more. There is always a warm welcome waiting for you at Jack Mannix Carpets and Flooring, with professional staff always available to help with any of your requirements from a small rug or runner to a complete home or office block. Paul commented’ we operate a “no hassle” policy and never hound our customers.’ He went on to say ’we want our customers to feel at ease when looking for the flooring that will hopefully make their home an even better place to live’. I can personally recommend Jack Mannix Carpets and Flooring and would encourage you to give them a call on 01642 475577 or just drop in at 107 High Street, Redcar. You won’t be disappointed.

Central Heating for the kids on Halloween! If your kids are anything like mine used to be they’ll be desperate to get out on Halloween Night for a bit of ‘Trick or Treating.’ Unfortunately, the worst thing about Halloween (as I remember it anyway) is that regardless of how great the September ‘Indian Summer’ had been, once October came in the weather deteriorated and by October 31st the kids always had to endure a cold, wet, windy night to pester the neighbours. That’s why my wife and I came up with a wonderful idea to heat them up before they set out and we devised this terrific Halloween Soup. Little did they realize that it was packed full of the nourishment derived from the vegetables they normally refused to eat. That’s probably because we made sure it was thick, whole hearted and above all else – tasty! Try it yourselves and your kids will love you for it. Ingredients 2 tablespoons of oil ; 2 onions, 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks and around 8oz of swede – all chopped – 2 large cans of tomatoes ; 1 Tablespoon of tomato puree ; 2 teaspoons of salt ; 1 teaspoon of soft, brown sugar ; 2 Oxo cubes (beef or chicken, whichever you prefer) ; 1.5 litres of water ; 1 bouquet garni ; pepper. Method Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onions and fry until softened. Stir in the carrots, celery, swede and the tomatoes with their juice. Add the remaining ingredients, crumbling the Oxo cubes into the liquid and season with pepper to taste. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 40 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Cool slightly, remove the bouquet garni then zap in an electric blender or food processor until smooth. Serve hot, in mugs, with plenty of crusty bread. Perfect for little monsters!

Gosh, I Didn’t Know It Did That!

It’s remarkable how we can sometimes spend years using a computer without ever finding out what certain keys actually do. Perhaps the most mysterious of all is the Print Screen key, usually up at the top right hand side of the keyboard and often abbreviated to PrtScn. In the example below it is simple PS. Most PC users have tried pressing it a few times, had no response and automatically presumed it didn’t really do anything. It’s then usually forgotten forever, which is actually a shame because it does have a really useful function. If you have a photograph, map, diagram or anything else on your screen that you’d like to place in a document or send to someone in an email, simply press Shift + Print Screen. Then open an email or Word document and paste (control V). The image will miraculously appear, ready to be sent or saved. It even copies stuff off emails that in the past you’ve probably wondered how to extract. Try it, it’s great!

Random Facts

It is believed that Shakespeare was 46 around the time that the King James Version of the Bible was written. In Psalms 46, the 46th word from the first word is shake and the 46th word from the last word is spear. Henry Ford produced the model T only in black because the black paint available at the time was the fastest to dry.

If Only We Could Find Some Consistency Seven days – three games – almost the same personnel and three entirely different performances. Unfortunately, print deadlines don’t allow me to include the League cup match with Preston in this assessment but there is little doubt that the ‘modus operandi’ will be different again. Whatever the result, and I’m pretty confident it will be a ‘Boro win with Muzzy Carayol frightening the life out of the Preston defence with his pace, we have to be a little frustrated that we can’t turn it on a bit more consistently. We showed our ability at home against Ipswich with a couple of great goals. Luke Williams showed composure that belied his tender years to score an excellent first with a super strike and that was followed by Jason Steele’s sublime kick to Carayol’s feet for the second. Quality all round! Exit to Blackpool and the confidence that emanated from consecutive home wins was totally dissipated with a below par performance. Let’s be honest, Blackpool are a good side but our own performance was so poor it made them look far better than they actually are. Then it was Blackburn and we were live on Sky. How many times have we looked forward to a ‘Boro match on the box only to find that we were dreadful, scored nothing and had the rest of the country switching over in absolute boredom? That’s why on the way to Friday night’s match at Blackburn there was a bit of trepidation at the prospect of another ’Blackpool’ and an even bigger humiliation because it would let everybody else see how bad we were. But, being the super optimist I am I placed a three pounds bet on ‘Bet 365’ at 22-1 on a ‘Boro 2-0 victory. Can I say with hand on heart that I don’t give a damn that Tony Mowbray’s late substitutions cost me sixty nine quid when Blackburn scored in the last minute. It was worth every penny to have witnessed a fantastic performance of slick passing, superb finishing, the coolest defender in the world back to his wonderful best and PAGE 30

the electric pace and guile of our new hero Muzzy Carayol. At times it really was like watching Brazil.

Jason Steele was terrific. He’s beginning to make goalkeeping look very easy because his positional play and decision making are maturing rapidly. The back four have definitely prospered with the inclusion of the tank-like figure of Andre Bikey but he in turn must have dreamed of playing alongside a player with the experience, ability and authority of Jonathan Woodgate. And most of us are still wondering how Tony Mowbray managed to pull off one of the signings of the summer in Muzzy Carayol. He is still young, has enormous potential because his pace is extraordinary and one ‘nutmeg’ in particular on Friday night had everybody drooling. And then we come to the star of the night. Lucas Jutkiewicz was the perfect striker. He combined his target man role with two superbly taken goals that any out and out striker would have been proud of and his combination play with Marvin Emnes was quite often breathtaking. But the contrasts from last season are still obvious. From being fantastic away from home and poor at the Riverside we have now reversed that scenario. So let’s hope the wonderful Blackburn result (not to mention the currently unknown results against Preston and Leicester) will stimulate everyone – players and supporters alike – and we can give this young and definitely upwardly mobile set of players the benefit of real support. The key to real success though, is consistency, and if Tony Mowbray can generate a modicum of that quality into our overall play there should be an exciting seven months ahead. There is now a report and full comment after every ‘Boro match on The Eye website – Sport. WE would welcome your own comments as well!
