After the hugely disappointing failure of Middlesbrough to see off already relegated Doncaster Rovers to just about end their promotion hopes the area was lifted dramatically when just a few hours later - the first steel of the new era rolled off the production line at Redcar. Four days after the emotional moment when young Wills Waterfield relit the blast furnace during a ceremony attended by many of SSI’s hierarchy the first huge slab of steel emerged from the foundry to be greeted with enormous enthusiasm across the entire region. And in a wonderful gesture from SSI that piece of steel will be kept on Teesside and fashioned into a tribute to the work of people like Will’s dad Geoff who superbly led the fight to reintroduce steel making on Teesside but sadly died last August aged just 43. The new steel making era has begun in earnest and let’s all hope it remains a long and lasting memorial to Geoff’s work for many, many years to come. Happy Reading.

Ambitious apprentices given permanent jobs at care home Two young Redcar & Cleveland College apprentices have secured permanent jobs at a Teesside care home after they showed passion and ambition to help others. Amber Smallwood, 17, and Kaylie Milburn, 18, both from Redcar, are being taken on as full time carers at a Redcar residential home after spending a successful year working there as part of a Health and Social Care Apprenticeship with the College. Ann Palmer, the manager of Germania House is delighted with how far Amber and Kaylie have come. Ann said: “After seeing them work hard every day to help look after the residents as well as bringing fresh ideas into the home, we are delighted to be able to give Amber and Kaylie full time permanent jobs working at Germania House, as we know how difficult it is for young people to find jobs at the moment.” Germania House, which is based on St. Vincent Terrace in Redcar, is the town’s longest established residential home. It has 18 residents and currently employs 20 people. When Amber and Kaylie found out that they would both be given a permanent job at the care home after finishing their Apprenticeships they were shocked and excited.

Amber Smallwood (left) and Kaylie Milburn (right) are pictured with Ann Palmer, owner/ manager (front) outside Germania House. -------------------------------------------Amber said: “I’ve really enjoyed the past year working at Germania House as an apprentice and I am really pleased to be joining the team on a full-time basis.” Kaylie added: “I couldn’t quite believe it when Ann told us she would be taking us on. I’m so grateful to her for giving us this amazing opportunity.” The home is now working with Redcar & Cleveland College to take on two additional apprentices.

THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 35

Steel Is Really Back On Teesside When young Wills Waterfield plunged a glowing lance into the blast furnace to restart production at the former Teesside Cast Products plant hundreds of hardened steel men were moved to tears. That comparatively small act by the son of the man who led the fight to revive Redcar Steelworks was the end of a massive campaign that few really believed would end so successfully. This is due, in no small way, to Will’s father - the late Geoff Waterfield - who will no doubt be looking down with huge pride and enormous delight that 1,700 workers – soon to be 1,800 - are once more involved in Teesside steelmaking. Phil Dryden, chief executive of the new owners SSI, applauded the ‘titanic struggle’ that had finally been won and in doing so was able to announce that the first slab of steel that rolled off the production line would remain on Teesside to be transformed into a permanent monument to Geoff Waterfield’s memory. Yet while that is a wonderful gesture from a company that Teesside has already taken into their hearts, there is no doubt that the greatest memorial to Geoff and the many people involved in this Phoenix-like rise from the ashes of a dead industry will be the continued production of steel on Teesside for many, many years to come. Wednesday April 18th is a date that the people of Teesside will long remember. It may PAGE 6

only be a big slab of steel to the rest of the world but to those who have devoted much of their life to steel production on Teesside it will remain the day that steel truly came home.

Speaking of the enormous amount of work involved in preparing the site for operation, Phil Dryden was adamant that the achievement should be remembered for ever because the plant was brought back to life in record time. ‘Seeing the fruits of our endeavours today, he said, ‘is the lift that we have all dreamed about for months and a result of the vision, foresight and bravery of the owners to invest in the area. I am sure that I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that we will never let you down.’ And so say all of us! Photograph by Simon Gaunt

In trouble or in debt? Don’t worry.... In trouble or in debt? Don’t worry - help is always available at Redcar & Cleveland Citizens Advice Bureau. If you are one of the millions of people who currently find themselves deep in debt, you will be pleased to find that help is immediately available from the panel of expert debt advisors attached to the UK Citizens Advice Bureau. For those who have never actually used this most helpful institution it is comforting to know that it has become an essential weapon in the fight to relieve many people of the unbelievable stress that owing money can create. At the beginning of the Second World War the government‘s aim was to create an agency that could advise the public on the social problems evident during the time of conflict. Their prayers were answered when WRVS and the Red Cross formed the Citizens Advice Bureau in December 1939. Funded by the Local Authority, Bureaux began to spring up country wide. From East Cleveland’s point of view the important day was the 4th November 1940, the day that the Redcar Citizens Advice Bureau opened. Its main function at the time was giving advice on wartime issues like rationing, missing persons and other appropriate issues of the day but most importantly it promised that whoever you were, whatever your problem, advice would be available to help find a solution.

That promise is just as relevant today, with the available advice free, independent, confidential and impartial. The number who used the Redcar branch in its first year averaged 74 per month. The impact it has since had on the area can be measured by the fact that during 2010 – 2011 the bureau helped no fewer than 11,262 clients. Perhaps the most important aspect of that impressive figure is the number of people the bureau currently helps with debt problems. Repossession of family homes, mortgage arrears and rent problems are all priority and non priority debts that Redcar Citizen’s Advice Bureau addresses and it takes every available opportunity to find the best way forward for its clients. Even if the debt is as little as £3,000, advisors will work with you and your creditors to come up with a debt management plan and an affordable monthly repayment schedule. And whether they are credit card debts, tax debts, medical debts, divorce debts or any other type of financial difficulty the repayment schedules mean that they can often be repaid within five years.

Hyundai i30 – The New Rival To VW Golf And Ford Focus

Already named as ‘Car Buyer’ magazine’s ‘2012 Car of the Year’ and ’Best Family Buy’ the exquisite Hyundai i30 boasts some of the highest equipment levels in the family hatchback sector. Striking good looks, a superb interior and impressive comfort levels combine with real economy and a very smooth ride to make it an ideal family car and one that prospective buyers should definitely check out. The range of standard equipment is excellent with all models boasting air-conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth hands-free phone connection, LED daytime running lights, a multi-function steering wheel and electric heated door mirrors. Cabin space is generous and all seats are designed to provide good support in all the right places. Perhaps what makes it the ideal family car, however, is the concentration on economy rather than performance, with diesel models capable of a remarkable 76mpg. Be careful, though, because that is dramatically reduced on the six speed gearbox models. The diesel models also produce extremely low emissions of just 97g/km - which makes them exempt PAGE 10

from Road Tax. Despite that, the 1.6 CRDi engine is capable of 0-60 in 10.9 seconds. Drivers will find the handling safe and secure with the extremely smooth ride owing a lot to both the comfortable suspension and the very quiet engine, especially when the car is cruising. That makes it just as appropriate for long motorway journeys as it is for the shorter family trips. The automatic gearbox is smooth and easy to use, but be careful, because it again pushes up running costs. Hyundai already has a very impressive reliability record, and the new i30 should be no exception. Inside, the cabin feels very well made and all the materials are of a high quality. The dashboard

THE EYE MAGAZINE - MAY 2012 layout is similar in design to its bigger brother, the Hyundai i40, and it feels robust. Compared to the old i30, this new model is vastly superior and attracted flattering comments from major rivals on the impressive build quality of the cabin at a recent international motor show. VW executives, in fact, even claimed that their Golf could learn a few lessons from the Hyundai. In practical terms, the generous interior space is great for family travel and the spacious boot allows plenty of luggage. In comparison it is 62 litres larger than the Ford Focus and 28 litres larger than the VW Golf. While the two 1.6 CRDi diesel models provide the best fuel economy, returning up to 76mpg, all models are economical, and the cheaper 1.6 petrol will better suit owners who rarely travel over longer distances. In all, then, the Hyundai i30 is a very impressive family car that will give you comfort, safety, reliability and economy. What more can you ask?

The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Modern Technology Has A Lot To Answer For. We have previously bemoaned the adverse effect that texting has had on our young people’s ability to write a complete, properly spelt, grammatically correct sentence. On the opposite end of the spectrum, however, comes an apparent desire to baffle people with gobbledegook designed to make a company look more special than it actually is. You can sow them out of doors in a well-prepared seed bed before transplanting to their final flowering position in the autumn.  If you’ve been growing your own summer bedding the young plants should be ready now for hardening off – in other words acclimatising them to a life outdoors after being coddled under glass. To start with put the young plants out in the daytime only. Towards the end of the month they can be left out all the time. Remember that good compost contains enough feed to last for 6-8 weeks. After that time is up you’ll need to start with a liquid feed.  You can start to plant up hanging baskets and other summer containers, but if you can keep them in a greenhouse or porch for a couple of weeks before putting them out this will help them get established. Choose a good compost which is designed for Hanging Basket and Container as they contain water storing granules to increase the water-holding capacity. You’ll need to start feeding your baskets and tubs after 4-6 weeks with a good feed. Alternatively, use a slow release plant food as you plant up the containers. This feed will last for the whole growing season.

Green House

 Grow-bags are an easy way to grow a wide range of tender vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, peppers and even melons. Bring the bags into the greenhouse a weeks or so before planting into them – this will give the compost time to warm up first.  Fuchsias and Pelargoniums should be growing strongly now. Fuchsias should be pinched out once they reach about five inches (12.5 cm) high. This will help make them bushy and far more flowers will be produced.

Containers

 Summer containers can be planted up this month. If you don’t have a greenhouse or porch to keep them away from late frosts, just make sure you listen to the weather forecast and cover the containers with fleece if necessary.

Lawns

 If you applied your first lawn weed early you should feed again towards the end of the month with a good Summer Lawn Food.  Persistent weeds such as dandelion and daisy may need treated with a spot weed.

Vegetable Garden

 Be ready to cover/mound up potatoes if frost is forecast  Sow outdoor marrows and courgettes at the end of the month. Start preparing the planting site at the beginning of the month by digging holes one foot deep and wide, about three feet apart. Dig plenty of Farmyard Manure into each hole then mound the earth up over the manure.  Runner beans can be sown in the second half of the month on a site prepared earlier.  If the weather is warm why not try sweetcorn – it should be sown at the end of the month.

Fruit Garden

 Apply a general plant food around fruit trees unless they have failed to set much fruit. Young trees may still need watering in dry weather  Gooseberry and blackcurrant bushes can also be fed  Start spraying regularly to prevent attacks of pest and disease. PAGE 21

Belief Like almost every other subject under the sun, people’s attitudes to religion have changed dramatically over the past fifty years. These days, the popular image of religion has become a contrast between apathy and fanaticism, depending, of course, on your geography. Fortunately, however, there is a more conservative attitude that the Ten Commandments are a set of rules that – properly observed - would have alleviated every problem the world has ever had to cope with. The following is a wonderful conversation that took place between a gifted university student and his tutor, and, whatever your personal beliefs, I beg you to read it through to the end. Professor - You are a Christian, aren’t you, son? Student - Yes, sir. Professor - So, you believe in GOD ? Student - Absolutely, sir. Professor - Is GOD good? Student - Sure. Professor - Is GOD alL-powerful? Student - Yes. Professor - My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill, but GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? (Student remained silent.) Professor – You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young man. Is GOD good? Student - Yes. Professor - Is Satan good ? Student - No. Professor - Where does Satan come from? Student - From … GOD … Professor - That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world? Student - Yes. Professor - Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And GOD did make everything. Correct? Student - Yes. Professor - Is there sickness, immorality, hatred, ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they? Student - Yes, sir. Professor - So, who created them ? (Student had no answer.) Professor - Science says you have 5 Senses PAGE 22

you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD, heard GOD, tasted GOD, smelt GOD or felt GOD? Student - No, sir. Professor - Yet you still believe in Him? Student - Yes. Professor - According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son? Student - Nothing. I only have my faith. Professor - Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has. Suddenly the line of questioning changes Student - Professor, is there such a thing as heat? Professor - Yes. Student - And is there such a thing as cold? Professor - Yes. Student - No, sir. There isn’t. (The lecture theatre became very quiet with this turn of events.) Student - Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it. (There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Belief (cont.) Student - What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness? Professor – Yes, what is night if there isn’t darkness? Student - You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of light. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness is the absence of light. Professor - So what is the point you are making, young man ? Student - Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed. Professor - Flawed ? Can you explain how? Student - Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey? Professor - If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do. Student - Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.) Student - Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class was in uproar.) Student - Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain? (The class broke out into laughter. ) Student - Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir? (The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.) Professor - I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son. Student - That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving. Game, set and match to the student, who, incidentally, was ALBERT EINSTEIN.

Facts on Steel & Metal Metals are strong and are useful for making tools, buildings, bridges and other structures where strength is important. Steel is an important alloy (combination of metals) that is created from a mixture of metals, mostly iron. There are many different types of steel including stainless steel, galvanized steel and carbon steel. Steel is commonly used to make a number of products including knives, machines, train rails, cars, motors and wires. When iron and oxygen react in the presence of water or moisture, rust (iron oxide) is formed. You might have noticed your bike chain (or other parts) rusting from time to time.

Things Can Only Get Better! There was a kind of inevitability about the way that having failed to defeat already relegated Doncaster Rovers ‘Boro managed to come from behind to beat Southampton - the season long favourites for promotion. Add Cardiff’s draw with Leeds to the calculations and it meant there was a chance of joining the play-offs provided we beat Watford on the last day of the season and Cardiff failed to beat Crystal Palace. At the time of writing (Monday April 23rd) I have no real idea of what actually happened but having been a ‘Boro fan for over fifty years that has experienced at first hand the inconsistencies of which they are capable I have little confidence in any of the possible results of this particular conundrum. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if we reached the play-offs. It would surprise me even less if we didn’t, but lets be honest, we shouldn’t even be having this rather onesided discussion. We should have been out of sight for automatic promotion already. Not enough goals, not enough creativity from midfield and a number of poor decisions in both the last quarter of the field and the last quarter of the match culminated in a home record that boasts only 22 goals from 23 games. Only relegated Doncaster, fifth from bottom Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace – the team we are relying heavily on to beat Cardiff – have scored less. Ten draws says it all, especially when three of them were against the current bottom three teams Doncaster and Coventry – already relegated - and Portsmouth, who by the time you read this probably are. Add Ipswich (15th), Millwall (16th), Peterborough (18th) and Bristol City PAGE 30

(19th) and you have eight drawn home games against eight teams from the bottom ten. Wins instead of draws would have given us 86 points and second place. A win at Watford would have guaranteed automatic promotion. It has been well documented recently that missing promotion will see a number of well paid senior players moved on. Regardless of finance they should be anyway! Justin Hoyte, Scott McDonald, Kevin Thompson, Steve McManus, Julio Arca, Bart Ogbeche and Danny Coyne are all costing substantial amounts but have failed to perform to anywhere near their supposed potential. It’s hard to believe given the success of the academy system over the years that there are not a few youngsters coming through that could do equally as well. The financial situation probably means they’ll have to. The great thing is that if that happens with any degree of success the Middlesbrough public will rally round and support their own far better than they would to watch Strachan’s expensive mistakes. Almost two years on he still has an awful lot to answer for. So, whatever has happened by the time you read this, and I would love to be proved wrong, I’ll nevertheless quote the Labour Party song from their 1997 election campaign. Things can only get better!
