As Christmas approaches, we could all be forgiven for briefly looking back at the situation in which we found ourselves this time last year. Steelmaking had all but gone from Teesside, ‘Boro were heading for the first division and there was a definite feeling across the region that someone had switched the light off at the end of the tunnel. Amazingly, just twelve months later, the first hundred recruited steelworkers have begun their training with a view to beginning production in December and ‘Boro are proudly perched in a promotion position despite having recently lost for the first time this season. Middlesbrough’s iconic landmark the Transporter Bridge celebrated its 100th birthday on last month on October 17th and to mark this special occasion a series of events took place, see cover photograph by Tony Robinson. Things are definitely looking up and while it would be foolish to become complacent we at least can look forward with rather more optimism than in previous years. Let’s hope it continues!
Happy Reading.

Christmas comes early for Teesside When the former Corus site in Redcar was forced to close down with the loss of 1,600 jobs it looked like the end of an era for the area. But after an enormous amount of work from many dedicated people a saviour was found and Thai firm Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) finally agreed to buy the Teesside Cast Products plant in March this year. The Company now anticipates that the old blast furnace should be ready to be fired up again in December, bringing major steel production back to East Cleveland. On completing the purchase seven months ago Win Viriyaprapaikit, SSI's president, said the signing of the deal was a "historic and wonderful day. We are very excited to be here, to be part of this. I think it is a wonderful place. We want to ensure that the 170 year heritage of steel making continues and we will put plans in place so that younger people can learn from this experience and carry on as the next generation of steel makers."
It certainly was a ‘historic and wonderful day,’ but the huge recruitment campaign that has seen almost 10,000 people apply for 1,000 new jobs at the revamped facility has ensured that even greater days are imminent for the successful applicants. For some, those great days have already begun as the first hundred have now begun their induction ready for the anticipated start of production on the eighth of December. A company spokesman said some of the new starters were ex-steelworkers who had been employed at the plant, formerly owned by Tata Steel when it was forced to close. For many, of course, there has been disappointment, but for the successful ones Christmas has most certainly come early and we wish them all well. Let us hope this new collaboration between Teesside and Thailand means that these new careers last long into the future. Steelmaking, after all, belongs on Teesside!

Keep ahead by mixing and matching In a world where good looks and imaginative styling can make a huge difference to your enjoyment of life it is really important to find the kind of fashion ideas that suit both your figure and your personality. Yet how often have you looked at a person in the street only to wonder if they actually possess a full length mirror at home? Current financial restraints generally make it more difficult to keep buying new clothes just to stay constantly trendy but there is a cost effective way to achieve that by letting your wardrobe work hard for you. And that doesn’t just mean in the evening. The proper combination of simple clothes can make your nine to five existence stretch way into the night so you always look your best. Add some accessories to a simple tunic top and it’s amazing how much difference it makes. And let’s be honest, it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. We’ve featured some great little numbers here that are available locally for a small amount and provided you aren’t one of these silly people who think you have to flash somebody’s logo to look good your budget will certainly stretch to a visit to Matalan. Redcar RNLI lifeboat station launch their own fund-raising Christmas cards. The cards, the first produced exclusively by the lifeboat station by the crew themselves, feature photographs taken last winter of the lifeboat and of a snowman built outside the station by some of the crew's children. Dave Cocks, from Redcar RNLI, said: 'As a charity we are always looking for new ways to raise funds. We produced a calendar a couple of years ago, and that proved very popular. So this time we thought we'd try Christmas cards. 'I took the photos last winter. Some of the crew's children came down and built a snowman for a bit of fun. They dressed it in lifeboat gear, and when they'd finished it I took a few pictures. A few days later I took some pictures of the lifeboat in the snow while it was on the top of the slipway.' The cards are £6 for a pack of ten cards, five of each design, and all the money raised will go directly to support the work of the RNLI lifeboats in Redcar. Dave Cocks added: 'They have been produced free-of-charge by our good friends at HMP Holme House Large Print & Reprographical Workshop, who produced the calendars
for us, and the envelopes have been kindly donated by Tesco, Redcar.' The cards can be bought from the lifeboat station during the times it is open to the public. Anyone interested in buying cards should ring the lifeboat station if they plan to make a special journey. The telephone number is 01642 484491. Jordan Bond, 13-years-old, son of volunteer helmsman Cameron Bond, said: 'I came down to the lifeboat station with my dad and, with a few of the other kids whose dads are lifeboat crew, we built the snowman one Sunday morning. I was really surprised when I saw it had been used for the Christmas cards.'

Don’t mess with mature ladies! A mature lady gets pulled over for speeding... Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer? Traffic Cop: Yes ma'am, I'm afraid you were speeding. Older Woman: Oh, I see. Traffic Cop: Can I see your licence please? Older Woman: Well, I would give it to you but I don't have one. Traffic Cop: Don't have one? Older Woman: No. I lost it 4 years ago for drunk driving. Traffic Cop: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please. Older Woman: I can't do that. Traffic Cop: Why not? Older Woman: I stole this car. Traffic Cop: Stole it? Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner. Traffic Cop: You what!? Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the boot if you want to see. The traffic cop looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car while calling for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches. Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please!
Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. Answers on page 14

The woman steps out of her vehicle. Older woman: Is there a problem sir? Officer 2: My colleague here tells me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Older Woman: Murdered the owner? Are you serious?! Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the boot of your car. The woman opens the boot, revealing it to be empty. Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am? Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The traffic policeman is quite stunned. Officer 2: My colleague claims that you do not have a driving licence. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out her licence and hands it to the officer. The officer examines it quizzically. Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, but I am puzzled, as I was told by my officer here that you didn't have a licence, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner! Older Woman: Bet the lying bugger told you I was speeding as well. Don’t mess with mature ladies!

When my hair began falling out I thought life was over… With her hair coming out in clumps, Emma Coughlan’s life was in turmoil. Having returned to Teesside after 10 years abroad, she’d been in hospital after an operation for ectopic pregnancy. But now, as she washed her hair, it came away in handfuls.
Four years on, Emma is in a much happier place. After initial despair at the alopecia which made her hair fall out, she’s cast off the early stigma of her hair loss to fight back. And her new Redcar-based business, as a semi-permanent make-up practitioner, means she can help others in her situation. A former pupil of Redcar’s Rye Hills School, Emma spent two years in Saudi Arabia and eight in Thailand working to help establish new schools. But when her relationship broke up, she flew home to Teesside, only to fall ill. An ectopic pregnancy was discovered and, sadly, Emma lost her baby. But there was more heartache to come. Emma, 33, recalls: “In hospital, I remember mum saying ‘there’s a lot of hair on her pillow’. But a lot of women experience hair loss in pregnancy because of a change in hormones, so I didn’t think much of it. “But when I got home and washed my hair, it just started coming out in my hands- it was like in a horror movie. “It’s an indescribable feeling. It completely turns your life upside down - the way you see yourself is totally different. “I didn’t dare leave the house for three months. I cried constantly, I couldn’t eat. I felt numb.
Thankfully, Emma’s eyelashes grew back but the hair is taking longer to reappear and won’t ever totally return.
I’d always liked being in a relationship and I thought I’d never get someone to love me. “But eventually I realised I wouldn’t let it beat me.Alopecia affects 1.7% of the population. As well as her hair, Emma lost her eyebrows and lashes too.
Emma now treats clients from across the North-east, doing eyebrow, eyeliner and lip treatments.
PAGE 16
“You can hide your head under a scarf or wig but it’s another thing to lose your eyebrows and lashes,” she says. “And I didn’t dare go out in case someone pulled my wig off, which happened twice! “But I was lucky because I had the most supportive family you could ever have. Emma, 33, is now putting her heart and soul into her new business, which operates from Redcar Station Business Centre and, as well as semi-permanent makeup, features tattoo removal.

Gardening Tips for November Essential Jobs Checklist For November
Plant conifers and evergreens Clear leaves and compost them Sow peas and broad beans Spike lawn and give it an autumn feed Protect tender outdoor plants from frost Start stored poinsettias into growth for Christmas
Flower Garden
Frosts can strike in November so make sure you have some horticultural fleece handy to
throw over tender shrubs November is a good time of year to plant new hedges. You can order bundles of barerooted hedging plants in garden centres now. Prepare your ground well, digging in lots of organic matter such as compost or Manure before you plant Harden off autumn-sown sweet peas by keeping the cold frame open as much as possible during slight frosts. If the temperature drops below – 2 C (28 F) close the frame and covers it. Watch out for aphids on the young plants
Lawns
This is your last chance to catch up with jobs you didn’t do earlier, such as aerating your lawns and applying an autumn feed
Green House
Pot on cuttings of tender perennials that were taken in September. Use Multi-Purpose Compost or John Innes No. 2 if you prefer. Keep the greenhouse well-ventilated to keep diseases at bay
Vegetable Garden
For an early crop of broad beans sow “Aquadulce Claudia” and “Reina Blanca” Peas can be sown for an early crop. If your cold frame is standing idle use it to grow a crop of carrots
Containers
For a splash of colour plant a container with some of the colourful ornamental cabbages now available or winter-flowering heathers. The heathers, varieties of Erica carnea prefer an ericaceous compost If you have cordylines or other tender shrubs in pots protect them from winter frosts. Remember that some terracotta pots are not frost-resistant and should be stored through the winter PAGE 18

History of Christmas That wonderful feeling we all get when we realize Christmas is coming can also emphasize different beliefs. While most of us feel that the Christmas Festival owes everything to the birth of Christ others believe it is a story that predates the coming of Jesus. Early Europeans marked the year's longest night - the winter solstice - as the beginning of longer days and the rebirth of the sun, and feasted from late December into January. Germans honored Oden, a frightening god who flew over settlements at night, while Scandinavians celebrated Yuletide by burning a giant log and feasting until it turned to ash. Despite the differing origins, however, these are all familiar aspects of the modern Christian Festival. The Romans ensured those early Christmases had a degree of drinking, riotous behavior and caroling for money – but early religious puritans disapproved of such excess in the name of Christ and considered the holiday blasphemous. Oliver Cromwell went so far as to cancel the festival when he seized control of England in 1645, and banned decorations and the cooking of meat. Puritans in the American colonies took a similarly dour view of Christmas with Yuletide festivities outlawed in Boston from 1659 to 1681. But by the 19th century Christmas began to take on the traditions we all enjoy today, and Prince Albert - Queen Victoria's German husband - introduced a Christmas tree to Windsor Castle in 1846. An engraving of the couple with their children in front of the tree was also introduced and helped popularize the custom throughout England and the United States.
Christmas Gifts For many people--whether they care to admit it or not--Christmas is about presents, with Children bursting with anticipation on Christmas Eve, far-sighted adults stockpiling gifts from sales held earlier in the year and multitudes flocking to the retail centres right up to Christmas Eve. Christmas's gift-giving obviously has its roots in the Three Kings' offerings to the infant Jesus but the practice ultimately steered Christmas closer to the secularized holiday it is today. Stores began placing Christmas-themed ads in newspapers in 1820. Santa Claus, the increasingly popular bearer of gifts, started popping up in ads and stores shortly afterwards and in 1867 Macy's department store in New York stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve, allowing last-minute shoppers to make their purchases. Today, Christmas has become a gift-giving bonanza with desperate parents fighting over those hard-to-find ‘Toys of the season.’ Most retailers rely on Christmas to make up for the summer doldrums and prepare for the slow sales of the New Year, a dependence that has changed Christmas from a single day in late December into a three month holiday season. Yet despite all this it is everybody’s favourite time of the year and we look forward to it enormously. We sincerely hope you enjoy it and let us take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas. PAGE 28

Are we good or is everybody else a bit poor? Statistics could suggest that this must be a poor Championship season when only two wins from seven home games could see us in such an exalted position. I’m not so sure, though, because there are some very strong teams around us and in many cases they are nullifying each other’s talent with a considerable number of draws throughout the league making a win even more effective than normal. Had we lost against Derby, for instance, we could have dropped four places instead of being second. That could well have been the case, of course, because Derby hit the woodwork on four occasions and Jason Steele had possibly his best game ever with four wonderful one-handed saves. Conversely, we have hit the woodwork five times in the last three games so it’s about time we had a bit of luck. But when you look at the other teams in the league that, although currently hovering just below us, have obvious potential we must be doing something right. West Ham hardly lost anybody from its Premiership squad when relegated so the experience and obvious class in their ranks should make them real contenders. Leeds, with big gates and some expensive buys are starting to look very dangerous. Southampton’s first season has continued in the same style that brought promotion last year and Ipswich, Leicester and Derby have all proved in their recent visits to the Riverside that they are very capable indeed. All of which confirms the fantastic job Tony Mowbray has done for us since his arrival. Although having to slash the wage bill he managed to get rid of a number of highly paid players yet it’s now difficult to remember who they were and what advantage they ever gave us. He selected well, managing to retain the services of players with real class and enormous potential. Matthew Bates, Rhys Williams, Marvin Emnes and Joe Bennett are all comparatively young players who are now providing the backbone of the success we’re enjoying. Yet with each of these players he was able to fend off strong interest and substantial offers from the Premiership, confirming has claims throughout the close season that he ‘didn’t have to sell anybody he wanted to keep.’ We’re rapidly approaching Christmas and if we can keep things going as we are at the moment then it should be a very exciting second half to the campaign. It has been obvious all season that we need an experienced and effective goal scorer to support Emnes and McDonald but since everybody else in the world is also searching for the same thing we can only hope McDonald finds his goal scoring touch sooner rather than later. If he does, then things could be very interesting indeed. PAGE 30
