People say that time goes faster as you get older and since February is here already we’re inclined to agree. Thankfully the weather has improved and before you know it we’ll be enjoying those sunny spring days with new growth, new lambs and new optimism everywhere as days get longer and winter begins to recede. In the meantime we can enjoy the February delights of pancakes and romance with Shrove Tuesday and St Valentine’s Day both on the immediate horizon. And no matter what you think of the commercialisation of this particular Saints Day a nice card and a bunch of flowers will still earn you maximum ‘brownie points.’ Have a great month and enjoy the February edition.

College partnership keeps on building Students on construction courses at Redcar & Cleveland College are gaining valuable experience working on building sites, thanks to Coast and Country Housing and regeneration specialists Frank Haslam Milan (FHM). FHM has offered temporary work placements to more than 30 students who are studying a variety of different disciplines in the building industry at the College in an effort to help them complete the practical side of their courses. The partnership has proved so successful that two subcontractors working with FHM have offered full-time apprenticeship posts to two students from Redcar. Working in partnership with the College and local housing association Coast and Country Housing, FHM has secured jobs for Antony Atkins, as an apprentice painter with one of its subcontractors Hayton and Lamb, and for Liam Coulter, as an apprentice plumber with WH Dunn. Antony, from Redcar, who is working on the Steeplechase building site in Redcar, said: “Working as an apprentice painter is giving me the experience in the industry that I need to PAGE 4
Constructing a career: Apprentices Antony Atkins (L) and Liam Coulter (R) pictured on the Steeplechase housing development in Redcar really get on. Being able to learn the trade and earn a wage, alongside studying at the College, is great.” Contracts Manager Jonathan White said: “It is a very positive partnership between Coast and Country Housing, FHM and Redcar & Cleveland College that has had excellent results for the young people taking part. “The College has been excellent, providing support and facilitating the interviews when needed, and special thanks to the Employer Engagement team, who have helped us drive this forward. We see this as an ongoing venture
and look forward to offering more young people work placements.”

Dictionary of dating As it’s Valentine’s month and there is already an air of romance in the wind it seemed the perfect time to analyse the various aspects of dating. See how many of these definitions fit your own experience! DATING: The process of spending enormous amounts of money, time, and energy to get better acquainted with a person whom you don't especially like in the present and will learn to like a lot less in the future. EASY: A term used to describe a woman who has the morals of a man. EYE CONTACT: A method utilized by a woman to communicate to a man that she is interested in him. Ironically it rarely happens in reverse because despite the advantage of eye contact men are strangely unable to look a woman straight in the eye. This is not necessarily due to shyness, but usually to the fact that a woman's eyes are not located in her chest.
SOBER: A condition in which it is almost impossible to fall in love.
FRIEND: A member of the opposite sex who has some flaw which makes sleeping with him/ her totally unappealing.
ATTRACTION: The act of associating feeling frisky with a particular person.
INDIFFERENCE: A woman's feeling toward a man that is interpreted by the man as "playing hard to get." IRRITATING HABIT: What the endearing little qualities that initially attract two people to each other turn into after a few months together. NYMPHOMANIAC: A man's term for a woman who wants to do it more often than he does. PAGE 6
DRUNK: A condition in which it is almost impossible not to fall in love – however temporary it turns out to be. We’ve all heard the expression ‘I’ve never gone to bed with an ugly person but I’ve woken up with a few!’
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: What occurs when two not entirely choosy people meet while both are feeling frisky at the same time. LAW OF RELATIVITY: How attractive a stranger in the same bar appears to be is directly proportionate to how unattractive your date is.

Redcar in bloom This year will see Redcar enter the ‘Northumbria in Bloom’ environmental competition for the first time thanks to a local group called ‘Redcar in Bloom’ that was formed as recently as December. Consisting of a number of highly enthusiastic local residents, school representatives, ward members and local business people, the project is also being supported by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Perhaps the most exciting news is that Redcar & Cleveland has been chosen to host the event this year so it could auger well for the town’s chances. All ‘Northumbria in Bloom’ entries are community led and the Coastal Neighbourhood Team have and will continue to provide support, advice and assistance to Redcar in Bloom and as the process progresses they will direct resources to assist with the entry. Special awards are made for categories like schools, conservation projects, business parks, hospitals and parks with the competition contributing substantially to the regeneration of towns and cities and helping to provide an attractive environment for both visitors and local community. Redcar & Cleveland’s Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Sheelagh Clarke said "It is great news that Redcar & Cleveland has been chosen to host the event. The ‘Redcar in Bloom’ group is very keen to put on a good show in this competition and I am sure residents and visitors will enjoy the benefits of community involvement at its best". Councillor Sylvia Szintai, Cabinet Member for Environment said "The boost to the area will be very much appreciated by everyone. The Borough has some hidden gems and it will be an ideal way to showcase the talents of all those involved. Saltburn won a trophy in 2010 so it would be lovely to win another one this year"

The Origins of the Great Hit Singles. Je T’aime...Moi Non Plus – Serge Gainsborg & Jane Birkin.......the ultimate Valentine’s Day Music. In keeping with our ‘Valentine’s Day’ theme in this edition we decided that our great hit single this month should encompass the real romance surrounding February 14.th In 1969, Fontana decided to release a record that would inevitably prove enormously controversial. To make a piece of music that unashamedly recreated the sounds of love making simply had to be a subject for censorship and it was no surprise to anyone when it became one of the earliest examples of a single banned by the BBC for its racy content that - despite a lack of airplay still became an enormous hit. Perhaps the strangest aspect of the recording is that despite sounding as if they were having a fairly good time in some French boudoir, artistes Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsborg were actually in separate booths in a studio in central London. Gainsborg had originally recorded the erotic number with his previous girlfriend Brigitte Bardot a couple of years earlier – a recording that was actually reputed to be the real thing! However, after some persuasion from Bardot’s husband the session remained unreleased. In the meantime Gainsborg met Birkin while making a movie in France and once they became lovers it didn’t take long for him to persuade her to record the song anew with him. Once released, the sound of a breathless Birkin being serenaded by muttered sweet nothings from Gainsborg was immediately banned by the BBC and though few in Britain actually understood what he was whispering they obviously got the picture. The ensuing publicity helped the record sell quickly and it soon reached number 2. Amazingly, It appears that it was only at this point that Fontana became aware of the risqué content of the record and swiftly removed it from their catalogue. An independent label – Major Minor – took over the rights and the record not only returned to the charts but this time made it all the way to number one.

Valentine’s Day Humour It's was Valentine’s Day in 1961 and Harold goes to pick up his date, Peggy Sue. Harold's a pretty hip guy with his own car and a duck tail hairdo and when he goes to the front door, Peggy Sue's mother invites him in. 'Peggy Sue's not ready yet, so why don't you have a seat and tell me what you’re planning to do for your Valentine date. Harold replies politely that they will probably just go to the shop or to a drive-in-movie. Peggy Sue's mother responds, 'Why don't you kids go out and screw? I hear all the kids are doing it. Naturally this comes as quite a surprise to Harold and he says 'Wha...aaat? ''Yeah,' says Peggy Sue's mother, 'We know Peggy Sue really likes to screw; why, she'd screw all night if we let her! 'Harold's eyes light up and he smiles from ear to ear, immediately revising his plans for the evening. A few minutes later, Peggy Sue comes downstairs and announces that she's ready to go. Almost breathless with anticipation, Harold escorts his date out the front door while Mom is saying, 'Have a good evening kids,' with a small wink for Harold. About 20 minutes later, a thoroughly dishevelled Peggy Sue rushes back into the house, slams the door behind her and screams at her mother: 'It's The Twist, Mother! The Twist! It's called The Twist!'
Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in
the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. New mine to offer thousands of new jobs UP to 5,000 jobs could be created in our area after plans were revealed to open the first UK Potash mine in 40 years. Mineral rights between Whitby and Scarborough were sold to Sirius Minerals, which specialises in potash exploration and development and has three potash projects already in Australia and the USA. The company has announced its new plans to open a new mine on the coast creating thousands of new jobs. It plans to undertake test drilling and seismic surveys in the area following the deal with York Potash which will see it hold mineral rights on 600 sq km on land and on the coast. The location will then be sought for the mine head to extract the potash, which is a powdery salt used in fertilisers, before the planning application is submitted. Sirius says exploration work will be carried out to determine the potential for a new potash mine between Whitby and Scarborough, which bosses believe could create 1,500 development and construction jobs and 1,000 operational jobs in the mine, as well as supporting hundreds more in the supply chain. The project is still in its early stages but if it goes ahead Sirius estimates agricultural potash, which is a powdery salt used in fertilizers, could be extracted from the new mine for the next 50 years. Chris Fraser, who founded York Potash last year and is now managing director and chief executive of Sirius, said: “Demand for potash is undergoing significant growth. “Potash is an essential component in PAGE 14
the fertilisers that we all rely on for cost effective food production.” “The York Potash project, subject to successful testing, could become a new and strategically important potash mine for the UK.” “This is just one step on a longer journey but we are confident that our vision for a high-quality, modern and efficient potash mine in North Yorkshire can be achieved and would deliver an asset of true national importance.” Whitby’s MP Robert Goodwill welcomed the news. He said: “This is absolutely brilliant news as this investment could create one of Scarborough’s largest employers.” “We have been saying there will be private sector jobs that come and replace some of the losses in the state sector and this could see that happening in Scarborough with thousands of jobs.” Sirius say subject to successful completion of the exploratory and surveying work, it is anticipated details will be developed for a suitable extraction point and mine head with accompanying infrastructure. Planning permissions will then be sought with a view to making the York Potash project operational “as soon as is practically possible.” The project’s proposed exploration area would extend approximately between Scarborough and Whitby across the 600 sq km land allocation. However no timetable has been set for submission of a planning permission to develop the mine nor for the intended start of mining operations.

Kids Do Understand Love! For a very long time people have searched for the meaning of love, but even the great philosophers have never been able to fully touch its true essence. In a recent survey of 4-8 year olds, however, we discovered that there is a more profound understanding of what love really is among the very young than you would have imagined. Read on and be surprised that despite their youth and innocence, these particular kids already have a simple but deep grasp of the important fourletter word. "Love is when a girl puts on and she takes a sip before perfume and a boy puts on giving it to him, to make sure shaving cologne and they go the taste is OK." out and smell each other." "Love is when you tell "Love is when you go out someone you like his shirt so to eat and give somebody he wears it every day." most of your crisps without making them give you any of "Love is if you hold hands theirs." and sit beside each other in the cafe. That means you're "Love is when someone in love. Otherwise, you can hurts you but you don't yell sit across from each other at them because you know it and be okay." would hurt their feelings." "Love is when mummy "Love is when my mummy sees daddy smelly and makes coffee for my daddy sweaty and still says he is
handsomer than Robert Redbird." "I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and then has to go out and buy new ones." "When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." "You can break love, but it won't die."

School event inspires gifted and talented Gifted and Talented students at Salburn’s Huntcliff School were treated to plenty of well earned encouragement recently when they attended a parents’ evening hosted by the Lead Teacher, Hannah Mohon. The event, which took place at Saltburn Learning Campus on 5th January, packed in a full 90 minute programme of inspirational student, staff and guest presentations, with an audience of almost 200 people. The aim of the evening was to provide parents of Gifted and Talented (or ‘G&T’) students, as well as the students themselves, with information about its process, how it is beneficial and what exciting opportunities can be offered to such students to allow their skills to flourish, both in school and in everyday life. Delegates were welcomed by Headteacher, Ruth Mayes, and given an introduction to the world of G&T by Hannah Mohon, who also teaches History at the school. It was then over to guest speakers, Enid Harrison from the Local Authority and Andrew Watts from Prior Pursglove College, to talk about student PAGE 24
aspirations, personalised learning, supporting G&T and how to embrace it during further and higher education. Gifted and Talented is a term that describes children and young people who have the ability (or potential) to develop at a level ahead of their year group and who are also proficient in things such as organisation and leadership. G&T students can be so in one or more academic subjects such as English or Maths, or in areas such as music, art or sport.
Huntcliff School continually offers an extensive range of opportunities for both G&T and non-G&T students as part of their personal and educational development, and this event certainly emphasised this. Hannah presented a slideshow of programmes and projects that have occurred in previous years, as well as what is taking place currently and what will be offered in the future, such as the BBC School News
Report, a trip to Morocco, Teesside University’s Master Classes and Science Club. Parents were also given feedback on the students’ views of provision. A confident presentation by Year 10 G&T student, Caitlin Haggerty, described her time at Durham University’s summer school 2010. Her story was inspiring, and brought the event to an appropriate and thoughtprovoking close. Afterwards, delegates were able to look at work on display and chat to staff and guests including Phil Welsh, an ex-Huntcliff School student who now attends Durham University studying Geological Physics. Not only was this unique event a time for delegates to learn more about how the Gifted and Talented provision can equip students to make the most out of their education, but it was a celebration of young people’s achievements, showing how their talents can indeed be the basis for a successful future.

February means Shrove Tuesday, so this year why not try American Pancakes? These American pancakes make a great change from the thin, silky French crepe style pancakes we usually make in England because not only are they wonderfully fluffy and thick but they are simple to make and easy to get really perfect! You will need : 3 large eggs ; 1 cup flour (122 grams) ; 1 heaped teaspoon baking powder ; 1/2 cup milk (110 millilitres) ; Pinch salt. Flavouring your pancake is a very individual thing but you can use sweet or savoury depending on how you feel. A few good choices are things like : Sweetcorn ; Bacon or pancetta; Blueberries ; Bananas ; Stewed apples; Chocolate ; Maple syrup; Creme Fraiche and those two good old standbyes golden syrup or lemon and sugar! Method First, separate the eggs, putting the whites and yolks into separate bowls. Add the flour, baking powder and milk to the egg yolks and mix to a smooth thick batter. Whisk the whites with the salt until they form stiff peaks. Fold gently into the batter and it is now ready to use. Heat a non-stick pan on a medium heat and rub a little oil onto the entire surface. Pour some of the batter into the pan and fry for a couple of minutes until it starts to look golden and firm. At this point, sprinkle your chosen flavouring onto the uncooked side before loosening with a spatula and flipping the pancake over. Continue frying until both sides are golden. Serve and enjoy!

Make fire safety your new year’s resolution Cleveland Fire Brigade urges you to make and not break a New Year’s Resolution to check your smoke alarms every week. At this time of year popular resolutions include giving up smoking, losing weight and getting into shape, but one that could save you and your family’s life is to ensure you have working smoke alarms in your home. Latest figures show nationally there were an estimated 33,000 accidental house fires which resulted in 210 fatalities and 5,700 injuries in 2009/10. But being prepared and following some simple steps will make you safer in your home. • Call Cleveland Fire Brigade on 01429 874063 for your Home Fire Safety Visit and we will come round at your convenience and offer home safety advice and fit smoke alarms if required. Once fitted smoke alarms need to be checked weekly. • Decide in advance your emergency escape plan, which must include the young, old, and any infirm members of your household. Practice using the escape routes, especially in the dark. Have an assembly point outside where everyone in the household knows to meet in the event of a fire. • Before going to bed, close all doors and turn off electrical appliances; don’t leave any in ‘Standby’ mode.
• Make sure your keys are readily available to unlock external doors, but not visible from outside. • Make sure any alternative ways out you have identified, are also able to be opened in an emergency. Don’t block doorways or hallways. • In the event of a fire, get everyone out, then telephone the Fire Brigade from outside, closing doors as you leave. Les Jones, Head of Community Safety, said: “It only takes minutes to check your smoke alarm is working which could save your life. Why not do it on a set day of the week or as part of your cleaning routine? “Cleveland Fire Brigade offers free Home Fire Safety Visits which include the free fitting of smoke alarms where needed and helpful safety advice. Please call us to arrange one at your convenience as prevention is better than cure.”

Why Rugby’s such a great game! I’m joking, of course, because if you didn’t go to a public school or weren’t born in the Southern Counties the chances are you’ve hardly had any experience of rugby. If, on the other hand you were born within a twenty mile radius of Middlesbrough you must envy the supporters of the game with funny shaped balls because they only play for eighty minutes. Let’s look at the facts. Middlesbrough have been ahead or level on at least twelve occasions in the last fifteen months only to lose either a point or two points when the opposition have scored either in the last few minutes of the game or actually in injury time. This season alone we have lost no fewer than 10 points by conceding a goal in the last five minutes. Seven of those came between the 88th minute and the end of the injury time. So why does it happen? Lack of concentration is always blamed when these things go wrong, but as one who sits in the middle of the West Stand I have a different perspective. It’s fairly plain to me – and everyone round me – that as soon as we go ahead both defence and midfield seem to drop back at least ten yards. It’s fascinating to watch because no-one seems to orchestrate this tactic but as a man they seem to drift backwards. We play the game of drawing an imaginary line across the pitch where the midfield begins the game then watch how they retreat from it as soon as we go ahead. I’m neither a professional football player nor a psychologist but surely such a tactic invites the opposition to move forward PAGE 30
simultaneously and start to attack more. As a consequence, the more they attack the more we drop back – and that always leads to the inevitable consequence. You would think that as a defender of some note Tony Mowbray would have spotted this by now and put a stop to it, but the Preston game proved beyond all doubt that he hasn’t. It’s true, of course, that had the ‘strikers’ (the inverted commas are indicative of the accuracy of that description) taken their chances we would never have been in such a precarious position in the first place. Let’s be honest, though, that situation is true of many of our games in both this season and many before it. Perhaps the answer lies in the lack of confidence brought about by so many goals conceded late in the game, but surely that’s a ‘chicken and egg’ situation. At Bristol City we went two up and continued to drive forward culminating in a four goal win. If we did the same at home we might have a similar success. Those ten points would have put us within comfortable reach of the playoffs. Instead we continue to look over our shoulders. It’s a hard life when you’re a ‘Boro fan!
