Welcome to the October Edition of
“The Eye Magazine”
ARE YOUR GEESE GETTING FAT? Apart from gaining an hour of extra bed-time on the last Saturday in October, the onset of winter is normally something we greet with considerable dread. Frosty mornings, mist over motorways, going to and coming from work in the dark and a virtual dearth of pleasant things to do in the great outdoors are all reasons to feel a bit glum about the oncoming season.

The Eye is delivered monthly to over 13,250 homes in Redcar & Marske.
Yet that is a concept that is only true if you allow the more negative elements to dull your vision of what really lies ahead. Coming soon to a field near you are fabulous bonfires and firework displays that will thrill the kids and warm your own hearts just watching them (the kids, that is, not the fireworks.) Not long after that you’ll start to hear all the Christmas songs in the supermarket and from that point onwards your whole aim will be to create the best Christmas ever for both you and your family. That’s when the panic sets in. Lists are created, timetables always seem impossible, there are works Christmas parties to look forward to and dread in equal proportions and there are the endless and seemingly outrageous requests from the family relating to their Christmas Utopia. But that’s really what we all love about the festive season. It’s a challenge that we face year after year but nevertheless have every confidence that we will rise to because that’s really what mums and dads do! I certainly remember from being just a little boy that my mother in particular was always able to cope wonderfully. By the end of November she had everything organized. The Christmas cake was made and maturing, the ginger wine was fermenting beautifully, the Christmas present list was compiled and fulfilled (without a single electronic item on it) and everyone who expected an invitation to the feast had already received and replied to it. That, in reality, is where the real thrill of the winter season can be experienced and let me share with you the joy I am feeling at this moment. My daughter emigrated to Australia five years ago and while we have enjoyed a holiday with her in Melbourne in the meantime she is coming home for December and I simply can’t wait. How much better can the winter season get? Happy reading and have a great November! THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 41
The History of the 'Apron' Having lived through the much of the twentieth century I feel we ‘oldies’ have a huge advantage over our kids because they don't know what an apron, or, as my gran used to call it a pinny, (a word derived from its official name of pinafore dress) actually is. The real truth is that the principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because in those days money was tight and most women only had two or three dresses. It was also easier to both wash and replace aprons because they used less material. But my recollection of that wonderful garment goes much further and my fondest memories of both my grandmothers has helped me produce the following list of uses to which this remarkable garment could be put. How many of you remember that: It served as a pot holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears! From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot stove. Sticks and kindling wood
were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables, and after shelling peas or peeling potatoes, it carried out the pods and skins to the bin. In Autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees and vegetables freshly pulled from the soil. When unexpected company drove down the street, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the back doorstep, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It was the wonderful garment that my two grandmothers always wore and remains a stark reminder of the difference between now and then. For instance, Gran used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool, but now her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. She washed it regularly, of course, but never considered it anything other than a useful piece of attire. These days, people would go crazy trying to figure out how many germs were on it. And that’s a shame, because the only thing I ever caught from that apron was love... PAGE 4

We Shall Remember Them! In the June edition of the Eye I described a visit I had recently made to the war graves and museums of France and Belgium, and applauded the marvellous work being undertaken by both the people of those countries and the International War Graves Commission to create a lasting and fitting tribute to the men and women who had lost their lives in the search for peace and freedom. Prior to my visit places like the Somme, Ypres, Mons and Passchendaele were distant – if sad – references to the conflict that took place between 1914 and 1918 and despite the huge numbers that had lost their lives I, along with many others, felt that such atrocities belonged in the past. That trip proved to me, however, that they don’t and that the sacrifices made should never be forgotten. In October I was lucky enough to once again visit some of the main areas of conflict in France and Belgium and was once again both impressed and humbled by the way the dead are both remembered and revered in those countries.
remembrance to all who have suffered and died in the service of their country. On that day the whole nation offers tributes in many, many small ceremonies at churches, town halls and cenotaphs across the land, but the main focus of the day is on the cenotaph in Whitehall where the Queen lays a wreath in dedication to all who have suffered or died in war. It is one of the few occasions when all political factions are united and when Party Leaders, Ministers, MPs, representatives of the armed forces and many other dignitaries join as one to offer their united acclaim to the people to whom we owe so much.
In Ypres in Belgium that acclaim happens every single night in ‘The Last Post Ceremony.’ It originally began on 1st July 1928, a year after the inauguration of the Menin Gate Memorial, and apart from the years of German occupation has taken place every single night since. At exactly 8pm up to six members of the regular buglers from the local volunteer In Britain, of course, we also remember those Fire Brigade step into the roadway under the who laid down their lives, with the second memorial arch to play Last Post, followed by a Sunday in November the day officially short silence and they then play Reveille. The put aside in memory of the people who service has long been part of the daily life in died giving us the peace and freedom we Ypres and the local people are very proud of enjoy today. Remembrance Sunday falls on this simple but moving tribute to the courage November 11th this year and the National and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in of their town. I was once again able to be part Whitehall is a unique expression of national in the ceremony in October and it really is one homage devoted to the dead. And while it of the most moving occasions you could ever was originally conceived as a commemoration imagine. The following words are recited every of those who were lost in the First World War night and will always remain a marvelous and it has since been extended to now serve as a eloquent tribute.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.” PAGE 6

400 Years Of Celebrating Failure However strange it may sound it’s true that for the last 400 years we have – as a nation – been holding an annual celebration of absolute failure every November 5th. We are, of course, speaking about the ‘Gunpowder Plot’ where a group of 17th century terrorists placed explosives under the House of Lords in an attempt to kill the then king James 1st. While there were several members involved, it was Guy Fawkes who had been left to single handedly guard the explosives and he was inevitably caught, arrested and put to death in a pretty grotesque manner. It is therefore his name that has since become synonymous with November 5th. Celebrating the fact that their king had survived an attempt on his life, the people of London lit bonfires around the City, and months later the introduction of the ‘Observance of 5th November Act’ enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure that has continued to this day. Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. It also became something of a religious protest, with effigies of both Guy Fawkes, and sometimes the Pope, gracing the bonfires. Amazingly, ‘Bonfire Night’ is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries. It was actively celebrated in New England as "Pope Day" as late as the 18th century. Today, November 5th bonfires still light up in far off places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada. The biggest problem it ever caused us when we were kids was keeping the bonfire intact until the actual night. I seem to remember my friends and I doing an extraordinary amount of work collecting burnable rubbish from friends and neighbours. And while the end result was always a huge bonfire it was also a target for rival groups from a few streets away who always viewed an unguarded bonfire as something that needed to be lit immediately. We therefore had to stand guard for nights on end to prevent premature ignition. It was all worth it in the end, of course, because regardless of the history of the thing and the complete disregard of the obvious dangers that lurked around a blaze so big, there was always the end product when the bonfire burned down to hot embers and we were able to place our raw potatoes amongst them to create a feast of unrivalled excellence. It’s hard to see how those wonderful experiences could be repeated these days with the ludicrous extent to which health and safety measures have infiltrated our lives but I still think that taking part in such wonderful events was the best life education we ever got. Have to go now, though. The chap down the road has been pruning his trees and there are huge amounts of wood lying about. See you on the fifth! PAGE 10

Stokesley Family Law As I write the clocks are about to go back and there is a distinct feel of autumn in the air. It is one of my favourite times of the year, and for family lawyers like myself it is also one of the busiest. The summer holiday, like Christmas, is often the moment when many people realise that their relationship is in trouble and they start to wonder where they would stand if they decide enough is enough. There is nothing like an extended period with “loved ones” to test even the best of us. So, if the family holiday was the final straw, or has just caused you to ponder the future of your marriage or relationship, what should you do. As in many areas of life, knowledge is power but ignorance most certainly isn’t bliss. Ideally, therefore, the first step is to seek advice from a specialist family lawyer like myself. At the very least this can dispel those old wives’ tales and let you know if
what that well meaning friend or relative told you, or what you’ve heard elsewhere, is actually right. Roosevelt said, admittedly in a rather different context, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” but in marriage or relationship breakdown I find that to be often quite true. Divorce or Separation doesn’t have to be a battleground. Family lawyers like myself are committed to resolving disputes as fairly and painlessly as possible, and, by doing that, to keeping the costs to a minimum. With good advice as to the options available you can decide with confidence the approach and way forward that is right for you. Breaking up is hard to do but with the right guidance it can seem just that little bit less scary. And even if you just about got through the summer holiday remember this – Christmas is just around the corner!!!

We Have Another Real Contender In Xfactor After last year’s third place for Middlesbrough’s Amelia Lily – a defeat that was nevertheless followed up by huge success with her debut single ‘You bring me joy’ peaking at number 2 in the British charts – we now have another real contender in this year’s ‘X Factor.’ 23 year old James Arthur decided to audition for this year’s show at the last minute after his friend told him he had nothing to lose. James lives in Saltburn, and has been performing his own songs in local venues for the last few years. Following a successful audition he sailed into the Live Shows after great Boot Camp performances of Take That’s ‘A Million Love Songs’ and Bonnie Rait’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me.’ Perhaps his best performance so far, however, was the one that not only took him through to the next round but also made him suffer a panic attack after his performance. He had no need to worry though, because his version of Mary J Blige’s ‘No more drama’ was absolutely superb and the star herself telephoned him to wish him luck. After asking her how he could best do the song justice she replied “Sing the song like you want something to change in your life, like you really, really wanna change something and that’s it. Nicole was raving about you – you must be amazing. I don’t wanna wish you luck, just go get it.” Ironically, the title of the song was exactly what the medics who treated him after his attack advised - ‘no more drama and just take it easy! How he can manage to do that while rooming during The X Factor's Live Shows with the weird and very gay Rylan Clark is beyond us, though James admits that Rylan keeps clearing up after him because he is extremely untidy. Yeah, well he would, wouldn’t he! We don’t need to worry about James, though, because one of the secrets to emerge from several of his interviews is that he has a passion for Women’s beach volleyball. So, really, he’s an ordinary bloke just like the rest of us!
PAGE 16
So once again we have a chance to put Saltburn on the map and it’s to be hoped that by the time you read this (deadlines mean we have to write stuff in advance) he’ll still be a contender. We think he could go all the way. Get voting!!

Gardening Tips for November Essential Jobs Checklist For November
Plant conifers and evergreens Clear leaves and compost them Sow peas and broad beans Spike lawn and give it an autumn feed Protect tender outdoor plants from frost Start stored poinsettias into growth for Christmas
Flower Garden
Frosts can strike in November so make sure you have some
horticultural fleece handy to throw over tender shrubs November is a good time of year to plant new hedges. You can order bundles of bare-rooted hedging plants in garden centres now. Prepare your ground well, digging in lots of organic matter such as compost or Manure before you plant Harden off autumn-sown sweet peas by keeping the cold frame open as much as possible during slight frosts. If the temperature drops below – 2 C (28 F) close the frame and covers it. Watch out for aphids on the young plants
Green House
Pot on cuttings of tender perennials that were taken in September. Use Multi-Purpose Compost or John Innes No. 2 if you prefer. Keep the greenhouse well-ventilated to keep diseases at bay
Containers
For a splash of colour plant a container with some of the colourful ornamental cabbages now available or winter-flowering heathers. The heathers, varieties of Erica carnea prefer an ericaceous compost If you have cordylines or other tender shrubs in pots protect them from winter frosts. Remember that some terracotta pots are not frost-resistant and should be stored through the winter
Lawns
This is your last chance to catch up with jobs you didn’t do earlier, such as aerating your lawns and applying an autumn feed PAGE 18

The World Of Comedy According To Tim Vine Last month we published examples of the jokes that saw Tim Vine become World Record holder for the number of jokes told in an hour. We’re thrilled you must have liked it because we’ve had numerous requests to publish some more. No sooner said than done! Exit signs? They're on the way out! Black Beauty? Now there's a dark horse! Due to a water shortage in Ireland, Dublin swimming baths have announced they are closing lanes 7 and 8. I got stopped in the street outside Boots today by a woman with a clipboard asking me what products I use for grooming. She was a bit taken aback when I replied, "Facebook". I was asked what I thought of crime in multistory car parks. I said I think it‘s wrong on so many different levels. It’s such an unfair world. When a man talks dirty to a woman its considered sexual harassment. When a woman talks dirty to a man its £2.50 a minute (charges may vary). Velcro? What a rip-off! Eric Bristow asked me why I put superglue on one of his darts. I said you just can't let it go can you? I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I'll tell you what, never again Do you ever get that feeling when you're half way through eating a horse that you’re not as hungry as you thought you were? I just booked a table for Valentine’s Day for me and the wife. Bound to end in tears though she's crap at snooker. Conjunctivitis.com – that’s a site for sore eyes. They say that sex is the best form of exercise. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think 2 minutes and 15 seconds every 3 months is going to shift this beer belly. When I was a kid people used to cover me in chocolate and cream and put a cherry on my head. Yeah, life was tough in the gateau. PAGE 20
I saw this advert in a window that said: “Television for sale, £1, volume stuck on full.” I thought, “That’s the sort of offer you can’t turn down.” I want to tell you a bit about myself.. I’m a very quiet and secretive person, and that’s it really. I phoned the local gym and I asked if they could teach me how to do the splits. He said, "How flexible are you?" I said, "I can't make Tuesdays." "He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library'. I thought 'That's a turn-up for the books.'" "So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me "Can you give me a lift?" I said "Sure, you look great, the world's your oyster, go for it.'" So I went in to a pet shop. I said, "Can I buy a goldfish?" The guy said, "Do you want an aquarium?" I said, "I don't care what star sign it is." So I met the bloke who invented crosswords today. I can't remember his name, it's P something T something R. So I went down the local supermarket, I said "I want to make a complaint, this vinegar's got lumps in it.” He said "Those are pickled onions". "So I got home, and the phone was ringing. I picked it up, and said 'Who's speaking please?' And a voice said 'You are.'" So I told my girlfriend I had a job in a bowling alley. She said “Tenpin?” I said, “No, it’s a permanent job.” "So I rang up a local building firm, I said 'I want a skip outside my house.' He said 'I'm not stopping you.'

The Panda 4X4 A Great Buy For Both On And Off Road. With winter fast approaching and the North East’s notoriously icy roads almost upon us we thought we’d take a look at a comparatively inexpensive 4x4 that can help get through it all safely. It’s a long time since Fiat developed a four-wheel-drive system into their Panda range and the recently launched third generation of this popular car that is still the only city car with off-road capabilities. Now available with Fiat’s exceptional 84bhp TwinAir turbo two-cylinder petrol engine the new version also includes a more substantial - even rugged - body kit that genuinely enhances the Panda’s looks, while the chunkier front bumper, plastic side sills and 15-inch alloys also add to its great looks. Larger and more spacious than its predecessor, the latest Panda features more rounded styling and is designed to be the most practical and versatile version yet. Two engines – one petrol and one diesel and both featuring start/stop technology - are available. The petrol unit is an 84bhp 0.9-litre TwinAir Turbo and has a six-speed manual gearbox. For those considering longer trips a diesel 74bhp 1.3 MultiJet II is probably a better bet and that comes with a five-speed manual gearbox. Both provide excellent economy. PAGE 22
The interior is stylish and reasonably well made and although rear passengers don’t get an enormous amount of legroom, unique additions like the folding front seat do make up for it. The 225 litres of boot space also offers sizeable storage capacity for a relatively small car. Standard features on the 4x4 include climate control, CD/MP3 radio, 15-inch alloys, electric door mirrors, central locking with remote control and rear headrests. Furthermore, the optional equipment and accessories include Fiat’s City Brake Control system that stops the car if it thinks a low-speed crash is imminent, a sliding rear seat and TomTom live sat-nav. The Panda is also great fun to drive around town and if you opt for one of the twin-cylinder Twin Air models, owners are exempt from paying Road Tax. Off-road, the performance is boosted by uprated suspension that’s 47mm higher than the standard car, enhancing the already more than adequate visibility. There’s also a steel sheet underneath to protect from off-road lumps and bumps, and the engine’s air intake has been raised so you don’t drown it if having to splash through deep water.
THE EYE MAGAZINE - NOVEMBER 2012 Performance wise, the steering, pedals and gearshift are all extremely light but the chunky steering wheel and gear knob have a nice solidity to them. The Twin Air engine is a little noisy but nevertheless performs well for its size. The low first gear ratio designed to provide more control when off-roading gives good early acceleration, but although it can keep up with other traffic to the motorway limit it isn’t totally silent at 70 plus and certainly wouldn’t win any races! The Panda’s real strong point, however, is the comfortable ride provided by the extra suspension as it glides over potholes and absorbs many of the bumps so prevalent on modern roads. There’s also very little that would stop the Panda off-road because a high percentage of its power is fed to the front wheels most of the time. When the electro-hydraulic coupling sends power to the back wheels on hard corners or wet roads, however, it is not particularly noticeable. In all, then, the new Panda 4x4 is a worthy
top of the range addition to Fiat’s city car range with the Twin Air engine giving an enjoyable driving experience that differs in many ways from the normal super-mini ride. As a mainly town based car, of course, the four-wheel-drive system isn’t necessarily a vital ingredient so the 4x2 Panda Trekking, which has the same features but is frontwheel drive only, could be a better option. The 4x4 version, however, is still a great buy and compares more than favorably with many of its more expensive and larger rivals.

Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Warm Them Up On Bonfire Night With A Delicious, Hot Chilli-Con-Carne Everyone knows that weather-wise ‘bonfire night’ is always cold, wet and completely inhospitable. Yet no matter how lousy the conditions are the kids still want to be out in them and that’s why it’s important that you prepare properly and have something hot and filling for their return. And if you prefer to actually be with them in the great outdoors then here is a great recipe for you all to enjoy once the festivities are over. This delicious meal is best prepared in the slow cooker so if you plan things properly it will be piping hot and ready to eat on your return. Chocolate added at the end gives richness to this slow-cooked chilli, but that’s entirely a personal choice. It is, however, delicious with soured cream, plenty of fluffy rice and a scoop of guacamole. Ingredients:- One onion, sliced : 1 red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced : small bunch fresh coriander stalks finely chopped : 1 tablespoon sunflower oil : 800g/1lb 12oz beef brisket trimmed of excess fat and cut into matchbox-size pieces : salt and freshly ground black pepper : 2 crushed garlic cloves : 1 teaspoon ground cumin : 1 teaspoon ground coriander : 2 teaspoons hot chilli powder : 1 teaspoon dried oregano : 2 tablespoons of tomato purée : 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes : 300ml/½ pint hot beef stock : 400g/14oz can red kidney beans in water, rinsed and drained : 4ozs of dark Bourneville chocolate. Preparation method: Place the onion, red pepper and coriander stalks into a slow cooker. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan, season the beef with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then fry in two batches until golden-brown, transferring to the slow cooker when ready. Add the garlic, spices and oregano to the pan juices and fry for one minute until fragrant. Stir in the tomato purée, tomatoes and stock then bring to the boil. Pour the hot sauce over the meat, then cover with a lid and cook on low for seven hours. Finally, stir in the kidney beans and cook for another hour until the meat is very tender. At the very end, pop the chocolate into the sauce, let it melt then stir it in. Season the sauce to your taste, then scatter with the coriander leaves and serve. Absolutely delicious and very, very warming after a night of bonfires, fireworks and cold, wet weather!

The Championship – Is It The Most Unpredictable League In The World? I would hate to be a professional gambler if all I had to stake my money on was the 2012 Championship. Since ‘Boro rejoined it in 2009 results have always been a bit bizarre and anyone managing a couple of wins in a row will find themselves rocketing upwards. But the fact that this season seems to be even more difficult to forecast than ever can only be good news for ‘Boro because those three defeats in the first three away games of the season and the one solitary point from home games against Leicester and Derby would normally have seen us out of sight if any of the other teams had shown any kind of consistency. The three great results against Watford, Brighton and Hull, however, have – at the time of writing – put us in third place with a chance of joining Leicester and Cardiff at the top with a fourth league win in a row at home to Bolton.
Let’s take the Hull game, for example. The Manager’s initial selection meant a rest for Jonathon Woodgate; a place on the bench for the excellent Nicky Bailey; no game for Justin Hoyte, despite the fact he was apparently fit; another bench seat for Scott McDonald despite his winner at Watford; and also missing – for one reason or another – Lukas Jutkiewicz, Rhys Williams, Kevin Thompson, Merouane Zemmama, Julio Arca, Mustapha Carayol; Luke Williams (scorer of the leading contender for ‘Goal of the season 2012/13’) and the now departed Stephen McManus. You really can be forgiven for getting excited about our prospects when they are all actually available at the same time. Given our injury record of late that prospect may never happen but surely that is the value of having a sizeable squad that offers a lot more than pure numbers.
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of that opportunity is that we should actually be already there. ‘Boro certainly didn’t deserve to lose to Leicester and the fluky goal that saw Derby equalize came in the wake of a couple of excellent ‘Boro chances that weren’t taken. Even a point against Leicester and the win we deserved against Derby would see us level on points with the top two, though goal difference would have once again prevented us from lauding it at the very top. Despite that, could we possibly be seeing the first signs that as a squad we are now strong enough to more consistently reap the rewards that Tony Mowbray’s attacking policies deserve?
And – between me writing this and you reading it – we go for the second successive season to a cup game at ‘The Stadium of Light.’ I have to say that since it’s the ‘League Cup’ (winners 2004 – Middlesbrough) it is now ingrained in our history and we obviously want to go as far as can. To us it’s a local derby, of course, but the fact that Sunderland aren’t having the greatest season will probably lead to comments from their supporters that results against us don’t matter anywhere near as much as those against Newcastle. They will when we beat them though! Come on boys. That day at the Millennium Stadium was the best day of my life. How great would it be to do it again?
