THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 13
Welcome to the July Edition of
“The Eye Magazine”
IT’S OUR FIRST BIRTHDAY!
In This Month’s Issue
Football Has A Lighter Side Page 18
It’s been an unfortunate sort of year with several major events dominating the headlines. On a local basis the demise of the steel industry on Teesside has had a major effect on many people’s lives and we continue to pray that something can be done to rescue the situation even at this late stage. Middlesbrough, meanwhile, lost their Premiership status after eleven great years but with any luck we’ll be back again this time next year! We’ve also witnessed the introduction of a brand new Parliamentary system following the inability of any of the major parties to take overall control – another situation that may also change by this time next year. And finally we’re in the middle of the greatest show on earth – providing, of course, that the England team is still in it when this column goes to print. The World Cup has so far thrown up the usual mixture of quality and mediocrity but all that will be forgotten if Steven Gerrard is lifting the trophy on the eleventh of July.
Whats On Locally Page 30
So, enjoy this latest edition and can we just take this opportunity to thank you all for the many emails, letters and support we have received during this first year.

It certainly doesn’t seem like it to us but this month sees the first anniversary of the Launch of The Eye Magazine. The first year of any new venture is always the most difficult but thanks to superb support from advertisers and readers alike we are now able to celebrate our first birthday with every confidence that there will be many more to come!

Spokesman Mark Glendinning said: “It’s great to be involved in such a defining event, especially as the aim is to raise as much money as possible for ‘Help for Heroes.’ This amazing charity offers practical, direct support for the wounded, a project which is close to the hearts of all those involved with Kite for Heroes”.
Donations through just giving can be made from the following websites: www.justgiving.com/RMRM-kiteteam or www.kite4hereos.co.uk If you’d like more information and updates about this event, please check ‘The Eye’ website www.theeyemagazine.co.uk
Local man Trev Calvert - a Royal Marine Commando from Redcar - recently kite surfed across the English Channel, racing from the North coast of Alderney to Poole as part of a Royal Marines/Royal Navy team. The 6 man team raced against the Army and RAF across 70 miles of the busiest shipping channel in the world. The event was held during June and participants sailed from Poole Harbour in Dorset in boats provided by the expert Rib Charter Company J M Yachting. They took specialist equipment supplied by Redcar based company Typhoon across the channel to Alderney with the same boats providing safety cover for the race. PAGE 6

The trouble with research... You can always tell when there isn’t much happening in the news because that’s when TV editors invariably need to fill their half hour slot with the latest whacky research from some American University or other. The trouble is that the more paranoid among us take it all very seriously and try to adjust their lifestyles and diets accordingly. Unfortunately, since many of the survey results contradict each other they tend to create confusion and don’t really do anyone any good at all. I’ve therefore been taking note of some of the recent findings and – in my case anyway – am delighted to adapt the advice that suits me and ignore that which doesn’t! What do you think? 1. ‘A recent US study’ found that ‘keeping in touch with family and friends is good for the health because research has revealed that loneliness and stress could be linked to a higher risk of developing cancer.’ I can’t see how, personally, but any idiot knows that being close to family and friends is a natural human trait and must OBVIOUSLY be good for you. I could have told them that without being paid a fortune for it! 2. A daily dose of pistachio nuts could reduce your risk of developing some cancers, ‘according to US researchers.’ Another bunch claim that pistachios make you fat and obesity is a contributory factor to heart disease. I love the things personally so I eat as many as I like AND TAKE EXCERCISE. Solves everything! 3. Coffee has health boosting properties but researchers believe drinking it to fight a hangover is risky because caffeine makes you feel you’re no longer drunk when actually you still are. Surely that’s the whole point. PAGE 8
4. Research by Oxford University has revealed that 30 minutes of juggling a day could improve your brain power by five per cent. You have to be able to do it first! 5. Researchers claim that within ten years 81 per cent of men will be overweight. They’ve obviously never seen the crowd at a Newcastle United match or they would know we are there already! 6. Successful dieting isn’t just about will power, according to research. The intricacy of your diet plan also plays a big part with complicated diets full of rules and continuous weighing of food putting slimmers off. It’s the lack of food that would stop me! 7. If you’re over 45 you’re less likely to be fit, claim scientists. On average our fitness levels decline as we age, making us more likely to become overweight. Hell, that’s not research, it’s nature! When you really examine the results of all these researchers theoretically earning pots of money for crackpot notions it makes you wonder why everyone doesn’t do it. Stating the obvious is something we’re all good at.

Local couple set for charity work in Nepal Local couple Bryan and Anne Connelly are planning to leave the UK on 28th September to do some voluntary work in Nepal, a country that both are passionate about having visited on a number of occasions. They have helped raise funds for all kinds of projects in Nepal through the charity Mountain Trust. Bryan is currently employed as a social worker with a charity called Cornerstone, an independent Fostering and Adoption Service, but also has over 35 years experience as a councillor with Relate. He is planning to offer training programmes to social workers in Nepal concerned with helping street children who have suffered rejection and abuse. He also wants to support carers who have taken such damaged children into their families and help them understand the difficulties that can arise from children living in institutions and the benefits of them being able to live with a stable loving family. Anne is currently giving talks to a varied section of groups to drum up both interest and funding for the project. In terms of delivering the training, many expenses are involved and the two hope people can help. They are both members of Cleveland Golf Club who have kindly agreed to them holding a charity competition for Mountain Trust on Friday 30th July. This is a great opportunity to play this course in a fun 4-person team competition at a cost of £40 per team. It is open to all playing members of any club and can be any combination of players. This is another fun way to support the work Bryan and Anne are hoping to undertake. They can be contacted by email if you would like further information; bryanconnelly12@hotmail.com or anneconnelly12@hotmail.com

Gok – both stylish and entertaining! I never thought I’d hear myself lament the end of a TV series on women’s fashion but the sad truth is that now its current run is over I’m going to miss ‘Gok’s Fashion Fix’ on a Tuesday night. They say that gay men get on better with women than women themselves and this series shows not only the truth of that statement but also the reason why. The boy has real talent for design and he certainly knows how to dress the best out of a woman. It is, however, the way he goes about it that women obviously love. Open and honest to the point of bluntness he still manages to get his message across without any offence whatsoever and he does it with real style. If it was a woman saying the same things to her peers it would probably create World War 3, but Gok can openly tell a woman that she is ‘pear shaped’ or ‘top heavy’ while simultaneously concentrating on her good points so no offence seems to be taken. Picking out a woman as the one with ‘the worst wardrobe in the City’ is not seen as an insult but as a possible route to redemption and the recipient is always delighted to be chosen. And what he does with them after that can sometimes take your breath away. The other brilliant aspect of the programme is his competition with the dreadful fashion buyer Brix Smith-Start where high end fashion competes with High Street as Gok strives to prove that you don't need to spend a fortune to look fantastic. Casting votes are made not only by Gok's faithful followers but also a front row of the most discerning fashion people in town. He invariably wins, of course, proving that the ‘designer label ’rip-off’ that has been going on for years can be overcome with the right attitude and ability. A great programme even for us totally unstylish men!
Sudoku There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the
game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box. The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered. Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above. Football does have a lighter side! It’s been a nervy few weeks as we watch the World Cup unfold so we decided that to relieve the pressure a little we would show that football really does have a funnier side. Here are some excellent examples: (also see page 28) A man arrives at the gates of heaven, where St Peter greets him and says, "Before I can let you enter I must ask you what you have done in your life that was particularly good or brave." The man racks his brains for a few minutes and then admits to St Peter that he hasn't done anything particularly good in his life but he had been brave. "I was refereeing this important match between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield,” he said, “and with the score at nil-nil a minute before the end I awarded a penalty against Liverpool in front of the Cop." "Yes," responded St Peter, "I agree that was a real act of bravery. Can you perhaps tell me when this took place?" "Certainly," the man replied, "about three minutes ago. It was only the fourth week of the season and United's new goalkeeper had already let in twenty-seven goals. He was having a drink in a pub one night when a man approached him and said, 'I've been watching you play, son, and I think I might be able to help you.' 'Are you a trainer?' said the young goalkeeper hopefully. 'No,' said the stranger, 'I'm an optician.' Two boys were playing with a new football in the road outside their house. "Hey,"' shouted their mother, "where did you get that football?" "We found it," replied one of the boys. "Are you sure it was lost?" asked the mother. "Yes," replied the boy, "we saw some people looking for it."' There was once a fanatical Spurs supporter who thought of nothing but football all day long. He talked about football, read about football, watched nothing but football on television and attended matches as often as he possibly could. At last his poor wife could stand it no longer. One night she said, 'I honestly believe you love Spurs more than you love me!' 'Bloody hell,' said her husband, 'I love Accrington Stanley more than I love you!' The angry captain snarled at the referee. 'What would happen if I called you a blind bugger who couldn't make a good decision to save his life?' 'It would be a red card for you.' said the referee. 'And what if I only thought you were a blind bugger who couldn’t make a good decision to save his life?’ asked the captain. ‘That's different. I can’t do anything about what you think,' said the referee. ‘In that case,’ said the captain, ‘I think you’re a blind bugger who couldn’t make a good decision to save his life.’ A Darlington fan was telling his mate about the club’s new manager. ‘He won't stand for any nonsense,’ he explained. ‘Last Saturday he caught a couple of fans climbing over the stadium wall. He was furious. He grabbed them by the collars and said, "Now you just get back in there and watch the game till it finishes." Two fans arrived at an away game two hundred miles from home. The first looked around and said "I wish I'd brought my piano to the stadium." The second fan said "Why would you want to bring your piano to the football game?"First fan: "Because I left the bloody tickets on it." PAGE 18

Celebrating our Armed Forces A week of events supporting and celebrating the UK Armed Forces took place recently in Redcar. The week provided residents and visitors to Redcar with the opportunity to celebrate and show their support and gratitude to our serving troops, veterans and cadets. The Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor Ray Goddard said: "There were some fantastic events and exhibitions taking place all week and I was delighted to see so many people come to Redcar to show their support and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our Armed Forces. The Armed Forces defend all of our interests and by celebrating the contribution they make we can provide them with a much needed and valued morale boost." Photograph by Simon Gaunt
The week saw events including a World war two nostalgia event, Procession of WW2 military service vehicles, Flag raising ceremony, Performing arts event, Armed forces day and a Freedom parade March around the town starting and finishing at Majuba Road car park with the return of the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment from a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Alternative approach to common ailments – Arthritis. Osteo-arthritis, one of our most common complaints,
is one of the most abused conditions in the western world. Many people equate it with old age. I even had a twenty one year old patient told by his Doctor that at his age he should expect to get aches and pains! One of the few things that we are told that is right, is that it is wear and tear. From our Doctor’s point of view, there is very little that can be done, other than drugs for the inflammation and pain or replacement surgery. As patients, we have now been conditioned to believe this to be the case, even to the point of, in some cases, believing that this is the start of our demise! If our Doctor tells us this we tend to believe it so. Let’s take a look at the reality of the condition. It is true that it may not be possible to regenerate any degeneration within the joint. It may also be true that it can deteriorate to the point of no return in extreme situations. There is however, usually a terrific amount that can be done. Nothing happens for no reason, nor do joints wear for no reason. Even if we take miners working for years on their knees at a coal face, some may end up with arthritis, but others not. So what is going on? We have a lifetime warranty on our bodies, providing we maintain a totality of health. Our skeleton is a mechanical structure, and like any other structure, depends on the quality of the material from which it is made, and the efficiency and balance of its operation. The materials that make up the skeleton are largely bone and cartilage. With a balanced lifestyle, mentality and eating habit, these materials will be kept in a vital healthy state. If not, then very simply it is those that need to be redressed in some way. Most cases of arthritis I have dealt with, I have found that all that pain, discomfort and heartbreak has been caused by simple mechanical problems. We are designed to move and stand in a balanced manner and if we are not it can lead to greater strain being in one joint more than the other. This in turn, will lead to greater wear than the joint was designed for. The same thing can happen to the joint if it is not tracking properly or if there is even slight misalignment. Any mechanic or engineer will follow what I am saying. More often than not, the real problem lies with another part of the body and not where the arthritis itself is. Think of the crack in the wall of a house. We know that the strain is elsewhere within the structure. The crack is only where the problem is expressing itself. Problems like this will usually be corrected by a single Systemic Structural Mobilisation treatment, or one can go for a series osteopathy or cheiropractic treatments. Unless the origin of the problem is treated however we can become therapy dependant. Treat the cause and the effect will sort itself.

Eat Healthily with this spicy chicken and cauliflower pie. If you want to lose fat, you need to create a 'caloric deficit'. That is, take in less calories from your food than you burn up by your daily living and exercise. Obviously, you will lose fat (and weight) quicker if you reduce your energy intake and increase your exercise levels - but what is important is that you adopt a weight loss program that is sustainable in the long term. Some diets just focus on reducing calories in general, balancing low fat and low carbohydrates and allowing foods like bread and pasta in moderation as long as they are part of healthy recipes. Whatever type of diet you choose you will find they all rely on eating properly and so we continue to provide recipes that are not only enjoyable but also very good for you. Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 head cauliflower, cut into florets; 2 carrots, peeled and chopped; 2 celery stalks, chopped; 1/2 red or yellow onion, chopped; 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 3⁄4 pound), cut into 2-inch cubes; 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/2 teaspoon mild chili powder; 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper; 1/4 teaspoon paprika; 1 1/2 cups fat-free milk; 1 cup frozen peas; 2 tablespoons reducedfat mayonnaise; 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard; 4 large sheets of phyllo pastry • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. • Add the cauliflower, carrots, celery, and onions. Cook 8 to 10 minutes, until the vegetables soften. Sprinkle the chicken with the flour, salt, chili powder, pepper, and paprika. Add the chicken to the skillet. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the chicken just starts to brown and is cooked through. • Add the milk to the skillet and bring it to a boil, stirring often, until a thick sauce forms. Add the peas, mayonnaise and mustard. Simmer 5 to 10 minutes, until the cauliflower is tender. Transfer the chicken mixture to four ovenproof bowls. Coat each sheet of phyllo with cooking spray and stack the sheets on top of each other. Cut the stack into four pieces and press each piece on top of each bowl. Bake the potpies 10 minutes, until the phyllo is crisp. Serve immediately.

New Habits
Start saving money and reduce your food waste, and make the most of the food you buy. Here are our top tips ... • Why not start writing a shopping list - Did you know that half of us make a shopping list all or some of the time, but half don’t stick to it in the store. Try making 2010 the year of the shopping list and sticking to it! • Try planning weekly menus - Take the effort out of thinking what you are going to cook each night, and wondering if you have the ingredients to make it, by planning weekly menus. By buying ingredients for the delicious meals we’ve planned at the supermarket, we will be less likely to buy foods we won’t get round to using up. • There really is such a thing as a free lunch - Simply by using what’s already in the fridge, or last night’s leftovers for a packed lunch at work, we can save between £3.00 and £5.00 a day. • Get friendly with your freezer - There’s not much that can’t be frozen for later. Freeze your leftover festive foods such as meats and cheeses to eat in the New Year. • Double up on family favourites - When you’re cooking dishes such as Bolognese, chilli, soups and casseroles, cook one for now and freeze one for later. That way you will have a ready made meal when you get in on these cold nights. • Store cupboard essentials - Keeping essentials such as oils, sauces, beans, pasta and rice in the store cupboard means that there’ll always be something to create a quick meal with odds and ends in the fridge which might have been forgotten otherwise. • Perfect Portions - One of the reasons we throw away food is because we cook too much! Its easy to cook too much of foods such as pasta, rice and potatoes, so use the Love Food hate Waste portion calculator to help you buy and cook just the right amount of food for yourself, your family and your friends. Log onto www.lovefoodshatewaste.com for more information.
What Should I do with Unwanted Electrical Goods? Waste electronic and electrical equipment (commonly referred to as “WEEE”) such as phones, televisions, fridges, household gadgets and tools and computers is one of the fastest growing types of waste in the UK; we threw away over one million tonnes of it last year alone. Much of this waste ends up in landfill, where lead and other toxins can cause soil and water contamination: but is possible to repair and recycle many electrical items, or to extract components, such as precious metals, plastic and steel. So how do we dispose of electronic waste? If you are buying a new appliance, ask the store what you should do with it. Some retailers will take back old electrical items in store, while others will direct you to your local recycling centre. At Dunsdale and Warrenby we have containers specifically for electronic goods. We also provide a bulky waste collection service. If you are getting rid of something in good working order, consider donating it to a friend, family or local school, hospital, residential home or suchlike.
Battery Recycling
Currently over 1 billion batteries are thrown away in Britain every year. By recycling batteries we can reduce landfill and recover hazardous waste. We will also help meet the target of recycling over 25% of the batteries used by 2012. We have battery buckets for household batteries to be deposited in our Council Office Reception areas. Batteries can also be taken to Asda, Tesco or Morrisons stores.
If you have any questions about our waste and recycling services, please contact the council on 01642 774 774 or visit www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/recycling PAGE 25

Some interesting world cup statistics
The World Cup is obviously on everyone’s mind at the moment so we’ve dug up a few interesting statistics. Although the competition has been played 18 times overall only a select few have actually triumphed. Bit like the Premier League, really! The seven who have are the first of these fascinating facts. • • • • • • • • • • • •
The seven winners to date are Brazil (5) Italy (4) West Germany, Argentina and Uruguay (2), and England and France (1) Hungary holds the record for highest margin of victory after they beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982. Switzerland and Austria shared the most goals between them when the Austrians won 7-5 in 1954. Brazil and Germany share the lead for games played at the World Cup with 92 each. Brazil are the most successful team with 64 world cup wins, 201 goals scored, a +117 goal difference and a tremendous 40 clean sheets. Mexico is the biggest loser at the tournament, having had 22 losses. They also have the worst goal difference with -36. Germany and Italy have had the most draws - 19 each. Germany has conceded the most goals at 112. Indonesia has played the least world cup games with only 1 (they lost 6-0). They only played one match because they refused to play Israel in their next game. Germany and Brazil have made the most appearances in the actual final with 7 each. Germany has made the semi-finals more than any country with 11 appearances. Scotland has suffered the most heartbreak – failing to make it out of the first stage on all 8 occasions they have reached the World Cup finals. In 1984 they also went out without losing a game!
Football does have a lighter side! (Part 2) football really does have a funnier side (also see page 18)
David Beckham goes shopping and spots a Thermos flask. 'What's that for?' he says. 'It's to keep hot things hot and cold things cold,' says the salesman. Beckham buys one and takes it home to show Posh. 'It's to keep hot things hot and cold things cold,' he says. 'You ought to take it to work,' she tells him. So he takes it in to training the following day. 'What've you got there, son?' asks Sir Alex. It’s called a flask’ said David. ‘It's to keep hot things hot and cold things cold.’ 'That's a good idea,' says Fergie. 'What have you got in it?' 'Coffee,' says David. 'And some ice cream.' After a tragic plane crash Sir Alex Ferguson, Fabio Capello and Arsene Wenger are standing before God at the throne of Heaven. God looks at them and says; “before granting you a place at my side, I must first ask you what you believe in.” Capello looks God in the eye and states passionately, “I believe Football should bring unbridled joy to all the people from the slums of Rio to the bright lights of Madrid. I have devoted my life to it.” God nods and offers Capello the seat to his left. Wenger stands tall and says “I believe courage, honour and passion are fundamental to life and I’ve spent my managerial career providing a living embodiment of these traits.” God, moved by the passion of the speech offers Wenger the seat to his right. Finally, he turns to Alex Ferguson. “And you, Sir Alex, what do you believe?” “I believe” says Sir Alex, “that you’re sitting in my seat.” PAGE 28
