RU OK? Day was a tremendous initiative

undertaken by our mighty club this season; as awareness & education measures coupled the raising of $857 for the suicide prevention cause. During the August committee meeting our Senior ViceVice-Pres’ Pres’, Craig Shepherd suggested that we adopt the yellow socks permanently to align ourselves to the important ethos of the RU OK? message fulltime; a great suggestion that will hopefully come to fruition in 2017.

The Eye took a somewhat long winded poke at officialdom during our last edition, when it was suggested that Gosford’ Gosford’s lack of progress in the Senior ranks was due largely to pseudopseudoconspirotorial factors. Upon further reflection, it’ it’s fairly obvious that the flowery words of last month were total bunkum and that sadly, the ugly truth reveals that our stagnation has been largely self inflicted.

Best of luck to our; U12s & U10s in their respective Finals this weekend. Above: Nash Dorratt-Mavin is Go get presented with the Central Coast’s Most Improved U13 Rep Player em boys !!!

Saddened to hear that former Gosford junior & NRL star, Matt Orford is critically ill. The 38 year old was felled by a blood clot during mid August following complications arising from hip surgery. Get well soon Matt, from everyone at GKS. Above right: 12 year old Matt Orford: Gosford’s

An anonymous tip off led the Eye to a recent late night rendezvous, in a poorly lit underground car park, from whence an unmarked manilla folder was forwarded by a shadowy figure sporting a pronounced limp and a menacing presence (no it wasn’ wasn’t Ed). Surprisingly, the folder did not contain an opposition team’ team’s game plan, but rather a draft of lyrics for a new Gosford club song, written by our very own, Robbie ‘the balladeer’ balladeer’ Campbell. In a world exclusive, The Eye has jumped straight into print; reproducing said lyrics (page 5) so we may all partake in a bit of rote learning over Christmas. Nice work Robbie Campbell, your Uncle Glen would be very proud indeed.

NEW CLUB SONG

In a place we call Gossy Where all good legends dwell, There's a great Rugby League Team And we play a bit as well, We're a rough, tuff bunch of boys And we're in a bit of form, No one can defeat us We're the mighty GK Storm,

Lyrics written by

Robbie Campbell (Coach of the mighty U11(1)s).

We really gave it to those boys, We really gave them hell, We would have scored a lot more points, But they rang that final bell, We came and played today And sent you on your way, There can only be one winner And it was us today, We're a rough, tuff bunch of boys And we're in a bit of form, No one can defeat us We're the mighty GK S-T-O-R-M YOU RIPPER

The Colts Overrun A Faltering Storm --- The Eye ----

Gosford got off to the perfect start in their elimination semi final against Kincumber when Dylan McKay pounced on a deflected Jake Martin grubber kick which ended up ricocheting handily toward the south western corner. The Colts managed to grind their way to a 10-4 lead by halftime however and the Storm were left ruing a number of excellent scoring opportunities down the left hand edge; all of which was mopped up by desperate Kinny cover defence.

The second period began with a spectacular, try saving tackle made by Nash Dorratt-Mavin, followed shortly thereafter by Blake McDonald tearing up centre field, running thirty metres and diving over for what, to this purple eyed observer, appeared to be a ridgy-didge, you beaut, here we go, try. The on field officials saw it differently however and ruled that the ball had been jolted free by a defender during the put down. Sadly the Storm lads never got near the try line again and proceeded to gift possession back to the Colts for the remainder of the game. The red team took full advantage and ran in a further four tries to record a 26-4 victory. the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

Kincumber Too Good --- The Eye ----

The Gosford Kariong U14(2)s ran into a white hot Kincumber outfit and despite plenty of effort, were never really in the hunt. Trailing 18-0 at the break, the Storm had no answer to Colts duo; Riley Seaburn and Liam Jenkins who both crossed for four tries. Gosford were rewarded for their toil when midway through the second half, Nash DorrattMavin won the race to a Talon Adams grubber kick, scoring a well taken try. Hayden Crampton, Tarren Wargent and Cam Bird worked hard around the rucks while Preston Bierton unleashed a number of his trademark charges. Kincumber proved too good on the day however, recording a comprehensive 46-4 victory.

Gosford Fall To Rivals Terrigal --- The Eye ----

An even opening ten minutes saw Gosford and Terrigal rip in, with neither side giving an inch (2.54 cms). A try, a conversion, and a penalty goal, all scored by the Sharks representative second rower Kyle McLean suddenly pushed Terrigal to an eight point lead before Suli Hakalo countered by motoring fifty metres in the opposite direction for a powerful Gosford try. Three Terrigal touchdowns to end the half saw the Storm traipse to the huddle with it all to do, trailing 22-4. When the Sharks second half kick off managed to find touch and the seasiders were able to score from the ensuing set, it was becoming apparent that this just wasn’t to be our day. Gosford kept plugging away however and were rewarded with a second, long distance try to Suli Hakalo before Ethan Bradshaw-Lee muscled his way over from dummy half to ink the final scoreline in at 30-12 to our opponents. the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

Bulls Rocked By Efficacious GK Storm --- The Eye ----

Gosford swept the Warnervale challenge to one side during an emphatic first half display under floodlights at Toukley. Powerhouse back rower Logan Campbell led the way as the Storm out muscled, out classed and out enthused the Bulls to record an impressive 34-12 victory. Prop forward Toutai Aho opened the scoring when he backed up a Logan Campbell charge to crash over between the sticks. Brayden Habkouk dummied his way over shortly after, before nabbing another when he ran off his halves partner, Graham Porter. Logan Campbell rounded out the half nicely for the Storm when he crossed for his side’s fourth try, and with Brayden Habkouk converting all four touchdowns, the Carrington Street crew took a handsome 24-0 advantage into the break. The Bulls got themselves on the scoreboard early in the second half however this was quickly countered when a shift right ended with lanky centre Kyle Young diving into the south western corner. Logan Campbell notched a well deserved double midway through the period, before Warnervale conjured up a late consolation try which rounded out the scoring at 34-12. The win has earned Gosford a minor semi final match up against arch rivals Ourimbah, a team they narrowly defeated during the final competition round just two weeks previous. the Eye of the Storm – August 2016 Footnote: The Eye is pleased to report that from the 108 year history of Australian rugby league journalism, this

Dummy Halves Rule As Gosford Halt Bulls

--- The Eye ----

The Storm U10(2)s overcame an early deficit to score an impressive 34-22 win over Warnervale in an early Sunday morning semi final. The Bulls bounced out to a 6-0 lead before Matt Le Maistre was able to restore parity by sprinting into the Toukley shops corner. Dummy half Tex DorrattMavin pushed Gosford ahead when he arced his way, 30 metres into the opposite corner after the Storm had earned themselves a repeat, attacking set. Tex was at it again a few minutes later, deciding on this occasion to take a much shorter route when he dived over from dummy half to help set up an 18-12 halftime lead. The second session saw Benji Keene-O’Keefe assume the pink dummy halves vest before proceeding to run riot; scoring a hat-trick of long range tries to add to his rather fulsome basket of thirty, collected during the season proper. Well taken conversions were kicked throughout the game by; Blake Hodge, Tex DorrattMavin, Jack Simmons, Aaron Blyton and Benji Keene-O’Keefe, enabling Gosford to remain well ahead of their plucky northern opponents in recording a fine win. the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

“One One Man Team” Team Quip Spurs Storm

--- The Eye ----

A pre-game remark emanating from the Blue Haven camp that described the Gosford U12(2)s as a, “one man team”, acted as added motivation for the Storm boys during an emphatic 34-16 knockout semi final win over the Raiders.

To their credit, the Raiders lifted after the break and ultimately outscored Gosford 16-12 in the second half. Tyson Pagacs scored one of his trademark, dash from dummy half tries, before ‘Dom’ galloped away for his second of the afternoon. Both Dylan Gale and Callum Skuse had more luck than their first half counterparts in the goal kicking stakes by adding the extras. As the dust settled on an impressive, all-team performance, the only question that remained to be answered was; who exactly did the Raiders consider to be the one man, of our alleged, “one man team” ?

the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

A dominant first half from the lads in purple produced five unanswered tries for a 22-0 halftime lead. Talented prop Jake Sutherland was first to strike when he careered through the meat of the Blue Haven forward pack; running 35 metres to score between the uprights. Luke Jacobs, Soakimi ‘Dom’ Aho, Jeremy Hendriksen and former Blue Haven player, Zahn Keir followed their prop’s lead and all managed to race over for long distance, first half tries. The only downside during a brilliant opening period was the team’s dodgy goal kicking, which yielded just one successful conversion from five attempts.

In The Press … Three Storm Teams Stay Alive by Andrew Stark

Coast Community News 25th August, 2016

The first weekend of this season’s Central Coast junior rugby league semi finals provided Gosford Kariong teams with three wins and three losses across two hectic days of footy action played on a dry and dusty Darren Kennedy Oval at Toukley. Representative back rower Logan Campbell was outstanding for the Storm U16(2)s as they overpowered Warnervale 34-12 under floodlights, to book a meeting with arch rivals Ourimbah in this weekends minor semi final. Campbell laid on the opening try of the game for prop forward, Toutai Aho before crossing for two tries of his own in a powerful display. Leading 24-0 at halftime the Storm were full of running. Kyle Young raced over out wide to make it 30 while an unfettered Brayden Habkouk shed his trademark headgear to enjoy an evening of fulsome point scoring; the lanky halfback crossed for a brace of tries and kicked five goals from six attempts to rack up a personal tally of 18. Joining the U16s in next weekend’s minor semi finals will be the Gosford U10(2)s and U12(2)s who both enjoyed spirited victories. Fighting back from an early 6-0 deficit, Rod Godoy’s U10s recorded a 34-22 victory over Warnervale in an entertaining elimination semi final. Five of the Storm’s six tries were scored by the designated dummy halves as the team’s dynamic duo of hyphens; Benji Keene-O’Keefe and Tex Dorratt-Mavin raced in for three and two tries respectively. Tackling enthusiasts; Matt LeMaistre, Blake Hodge, Tyron Fernandez and Lorenzo Godoy were most conspicuous in nullify the Bulls around centre field while U9s tyros, Sunny Mayles and Taye Royal-Keir stepped up and played like seasoned semi final campaigners, contributing manfully to what was a fine, all-team performance. A dominant opening half helped catapult the Gosford Kariong U12(2)s to an impressive 3416 win over Blue Haven. Prop forward Jake Sutherland continued his tremendous season when he charged 40 metres through the meat of the Raiders defence to notch the games opening try after just two minutes of play. Leading 22-0 at the break, the Storm were in total control and despite leaking three second half tries, were never in any real danger of being overhauled. The season has come to a close however for the Storm’s U15(2)s, U14(2)s and U13(2)s who all suffered defeat during week one of the finals series. The U13s began brightly against Kincumber and scored first when Dylan McKay pounced on a final tackle grubber kick from his five eighth Jake Martin. The Colts hit back strongly however to lead 10-4 at the break before a controversial ‘no try’ ruling early in the second half appeared to deflate the Storm while simultaneously energizing their opponents; the Colts galloping away with a fine 26-4 victory. Please note: this is the submitted piece in it’s entirety. The editor of the Coast Community News is responsible for the changes that ultimately appear in the newspaper.

In The Press … (continued) Three Storm Teams Stay Alive … Gosford had no answer to the impressive Kincumber U14(2)s team, falling 46-4. Riley Seaburn and Liam Jenkins both crossed for four tries with the impressive fullback, Seaburn also kicking six conversions for the Colts. Storm forwards; Preston Bierton, Tarren Wargent and Hayden Crampton worked tirelessly, while super sub, Nash Dorratt-Mavin grabbed Gosford’s lone points early in the second half when he snuck in behind Kincumber’s outside backs to latch onto a Talon Adams kick. The U15(2)s tried hard against red hot favourites Terrigal before succumbing 30-12. Suli Hakalo was a power of strength for Gosford; the rugby union representative forward monstered many an unsuspecting Shark in defence while also contributing two long range tries. Cruel Twist Denies Unlucky Storm

--- The Eye ----

A last minute Ourimbah try consigned Gosford to a heartbreaking 14-12 defeat as our U16(2)s season came to a close at the dimly lit Darren Kennedy Oval. A long ball thrown by former Storm star, Benny Oliver allowed left centre, Kye Selmer to race over out wide, delivering a harsh final act to what had been a tremendously hard fought semi final. Gosford appeared to be headed for victory when they led 12-4 mid way through the second period having overcome a 4-0 halftime deficit. A powerful try to Logan Campbell was followed by a spectacular run from Sean Peruch down the right touchline (see page 29), with both tries being converted by the reliable right boot of Brayden Habkouk. A controversial offside ruling against the Gosford outside backs after a kick downfield had been fumbled across the sideline by the Ourimbah winger, would the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

ultimately prove pivotal. The Storm chasers didn’t appear to enter the ten metre exclusion zone and yet rather than Gosford receiving an attacking scrum, the decision helped piggy back the Magpies up field; laying the platform for their burly prop, Gaughrin to barge his way over during the following set. The torturous, psychological after game of, ‘maybes’ and ‘what ifs’ - provided a series of vivid flashbacks, inluding; Toutai Aho being held up over the line during the first half, while robust fullback Joel Campbell went within a blade of grass down a narrow blind early in the second. Well done to Ourimbah, they found a way, however it is in no way parochial to opine that the better side on the night, finished second. U16(2)s

Brilliant Gosford Outlast Game Bunnies --- The Eye ----

A dynamic opening flourish saw the Storm U10(2)s jump to an 18-0 lead and from there, the purple team were never headed; recording a fine 34-24 win. Benji Keene-O’Keefe crossed for Gosford’s first and last try of the morning, and just to keep the scoreboard ticking over, he notched a couple more in between. Tex Dorratt-Mavin, Blake Hodge and Lorenzo Godoy were particularly prominent early as the Storm threw the ball around in entertaining fashion. Umina fought back to score tries either side of half time reducing the margin to just six. However Matt Le Maistre scrambled across the line for the Storm’s fourth try after drawing a penalty (see above) and with a late Benji double, Gosford were able to book their place in next weekend’s preliminary final against the minor premiers, Toukley. the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

Gosford Plot A Familiar Course --- The Eye ----

The Gosford U12(2)s have reached the preliminary final stage for the third Greg Eather’s boys raced to an early16-0 lead via tries to; Luke Jacobs, Soakimi ‘Dom’ Aho and Jeremy Hendriksen, before the Bulls hit back with a blindside play moments before the break, cutting our halftime advantage to ten. Gosford lost skipper Dylan Gale to a head knock and with Nathan ‘Tiny’ Peers, Luke Jacobs and Ben Shepherd struggling with injury and/or illness, the bench was beginning to resemble a khaki free M*A*S*H unit. A fully fit Jeremy Hendriksen continued his sparkling form when early in the second half he returned a Warnervale clearing kick with great gusto, searing through defenders the flying fullback linked with Luke Jacobs and the classy three-quarter raced away for a spectacular Storm try. Gosford held a handy 22-6 lead however a series of penalties and a dropped ball or two enabled the Bulls to start snorting and they were able to cross for two late tries during a tense final quarter hour.

Berkeley Vale vs. Gosford

A hugely disappointing effort from the Storm squad last Sunday saw only nine players front for action; a third of who are actually Sharks men.

Running out with the bare minimum number of players allowed to constitute a game, it was only ever going to take one injury to bring the afternoon to a premature close. This scenario transpired after roughly a quarter of an hour and the game was terminated with the Panthers leading 8-0. The Gosford Open Grade have used 39 players all up during 2016 and while it’s true that a number are currently out injured (a handful of who were there to support the team on Sunday), many others have simply drifted away. Hats off to; Shaun Trasler, Troyer Dobbie, Sean Portus, Lionel Martin, Lew Addison, Logan Rea, Jaxon Wilkinson, Simon Latimer and Brady Gerber for bothering … while apologies go out to the Berkeley Vale boys on their largely wasted trip (- The Eye -). the Eye of the Storm – August 2016

Wyong vs. Gosford The dreaded ‘F’ word permeated our round 17 fixture at Morry Breen as Wyong claimed the competition points without so much as swinging an arm in anger. For the second week in succession, a nasty dose of non-attendance swept through the purple squad, leaving the handful of loyalists with no option but to forfeit. A big shout goes out toshout the team’s trainers; & Jason Bird, the & manager; A big goes out to theShaun team’sMartin trainers; Shaun Martin Jason Bird, the manager; Dion Findlay, andDion our intrepid Michaelstrapper; Bell, whoMichael all gaveBell, up their Findlay, strapper; and our intrepid whoSunday all gave up their Sunday morning so othersmorning may have opportunity a game of footy. In The Press … Gosford Teams Equal Fifty Year Record by Andrew Stark

Coast Community News 11th August, 2016

In a tremendous feat, the Gosford Kariong U16s, U15s, U14s, U13s, U12s and U10s have all booked their places in this season’s local junior rugby league semi finals which kick off at Toukley on the weekend of August 20th/21st. It is only the second time in the 55 year history of junior rugby league on the Central Coast that Gosford has managed to provide six semi final teams in the same season, with the only other occasion being that of the winter of 1967. The magnificent purple half dozen will likely all line up in elimination semi finals on Sunday the 21st, although the U10s, 12s and 13s still maintain slim hopes of forcing their way up into coveted top three positions via a series of favourable results falling kindly into place during the final round. U12s coach Greg Eather will be keen to get his team back on the paddock following a bye and then a wash out, which has created an untimely three week layoff. The Storm boys will reenter the fray against the undefeated Tigers in the 8am game; kicking off “R U OK? Day” at Carrington Street Oval, Narara this Saturday (August 13th). The U10(2)s appear destined to face Warnervale in their knockout semi final. Gosford managed to edge out the Bulls 26-22 in the dying minutes of a thrilling contest just a fortnight ago; a game in which dynamic dummy half Benji Keene-O’Keefe scored four tries, pushing his season’s tally to 20 from just 9 appearances. The talented U16s squad faces up to competition leaders Ourimbah in the final round before heading to Toukley for a knockout semi final against Warnervale seven days later. Wayne Oatley’s U13s have been buoyed by a remarkable form reversal that saw a 50 point loss to Blue Haven during mid June, morph into a 38-28 victory against the same side just five weeks later. Representative players, Jake Martin and Nash Dorratt-Mavin, along with Blake McDonald were particularly prominent in a spirited Storm performance. The Gosford U14s & U15s will go into their semi finals as underdogs against Kincumber and Terrigal respectively. The Ed Gale coached 15s have suffered heavy losses to the Sharks in the most recent of clashes between the two sides and the irritable nature of the round 11 loss at Terrigal, in which two Gosford forwards were marched, has the Storm boys primed for a big effort. Please note: this is the submitted piece in it’s entirety. The editor of the Coast Community News is responsible for the changes that ultimately appear in the newspaper.
