FADING GIGOLO Dir: John Turturro, US, 2013, 98 mins, (M) Cast: Woody Allen, Vanessa Paradis, John Turturro
A tender star-studded comedy about finding love in middle-age. A struggling bookstore owner (Woody Allen) convinces his best friend, a middle-aged florist (John Turturro) to offer his services to women as a high-class gigolo. This unlikely premise is treated with warmth and humour in a delightful and elegant comedy set in the multicultural communities of New York. Making the most of his amorous aptitude, the mild-mannered florist seduces a rich dermatologist (Sharon Stone) and her sensual friend (Sofia Vergara) before falling for an orthodox Jewish widow (Vanessa Paradis). Filled with richly drawn characters and immense charm, Fading Gigolo is an original take on friendship and romance in the big city.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON Dir: Kore-Eda Hirokazu, Japan, 2013, 121 mins, Japanese with English subtitles, (PG) Cast: Masaharu Fukuyama, Machiko Ono, Yoko Maki
Two families discover their children were switched at birth in this thoughtful drama. The quiet, affluent life of workaholic architect Ryota, his wife Midori and son Keita, is overturned when hospital administrators reveal Keita is not his biological son. Following a mistake made by a negligent nurse, his ‘true’ son has been raised in the dishevelled but warm-hearted home of a working-class shopkeeper and his wife. The couples’ different approaches to their dilemma and Ryota’s gradual emotional awakening are at the core of this humanist drama. With a subtle touch and much observational wisdom, Japanese director Kore-eda (Nobody Knows, I Wish) cements his reputation as the master chronicler of family relationships.
“A film of emotional poignancy, acted and directed with integrity, intelligence, lucidity and observational calm.” THE GUARDIAN SUN 23 MAR 12:30PM DENDY OPERA QUAYS

TENDERNESS (LA TENDRESSE) Dir: Marion Hansel, Belgium, 2013, 81 mins, French with English subtitles, (M) Cast: Olivier Gourmet, Marilyne Canton, Sergi Lopez
A divorced couple reunites for a road-trip through France. Separated for 15 years, 50-somethings Frans and Lisa put aside their differences and set out together on a road trip through France to collect their son, hospitalized after a skiing accident. On the way, old irritations and habits resurface, but so does the tenderness they once shared: the simple complicity of two people who know each other better than anyone. Marion Hansel’s compassionate film finds beauty in the everyday, observing small moments of warmth and humour, the joy of time well spent in the company of friends and family, even those who have been separated by time, distance and difference.

MR MORGAN’S LAST LOVE Dir: Sandra Nettelbeck, US-Germany-France, 2013, 116 mins, (M) Cast: Michael Caine, Clémence Poésy, Gillian Anderson
Michael Caine shines in this quiet relationship drama set in Paris. Matthew Morgan (Michael Caine) is a retired American professor living in France. A cynical loner, he’s lost the will to live since his wife passed away. A chance encounter with a sprightly Parisian dance teacher (Clémence Poésy) re-awakens an appetite for life’s simple pleasures, while the arrival of his unhappy adult children (Gillian Anderson and Justin Kirk) forces him to confront issues of fatherhood and personal responsibility. Anchored by Caine’s heartfelt performance, this nuanced drama unpacks the complex relationships that shape our lives, and their power to paralyse, confuse and liberate us.
“The delightful pairing of a classy Michael Caine and an enchanting Clémence Poésy helps give the delicately dramatic film just the right amount of sophisticated elegance.” SCREEN INTERNATIONAL TUE 18 MAR 12PM TOWER CINEMAS NEWCASTLE

A revealing portrait of the brilliant (and brilliantly entertaining) American intellectual. Perhaps no 20th century figure has had a more profound effect on the worlds of literature, film, politics, historical debate, and the culture wars than Gore Vidal.
