PRETTY OLD Dir: Walter Matteson, US, 2012, 85 mins
When it comes to beauty, talent and glamour, why should age be a factor? Following the success of “Miss Senior Sweetheart” at the festival three years ago, here comes a different look at the world of senior glamour. When 30 women aged 67-84 descend on Fall River, Massachusetts to compete in the 30th Ms. Senior Sweetheart Pageant, hilarity and heartbreak ensue. These women share intimate experiences, discover new-found passions and stir lifelong insecurities that challenge common misconceptions of aging. Following four diverse competitors as they prepare for and compete in the contest, this insightful documentary offers a compelling look into what it truly means to age beautifully. WINNER BEST DOCUMENTARY, SANTA BARBARA FILM FESTIVAL
“The engaging documentary Pretty Old is pretty terrific.” THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Dir: Ann Hui, Hong Kong-China, 2011, Cantonese with English subtitles, 118 mins Cast: Andy Lau, Deanie Ip, Anthony Wong
Dir: Thom Fitzgerald, Canada, 2011, 93 mins Cast: Olympia Dukakis, Brenda Fricker
A poignant drama about loss, duty and inter-generational friendship.
Two ageing lesbians hit the road in this uproarious yet poignant oddball comedy.
Ah Tao has served four generations of the Leung family as a maid, and now lives with Roger in Hong Kong. After she suffers a stroke, Ah Tao resigns and moves into a nursing home. As the roles are reversed and Roger cares for his maid, he comes to realise how much this sprightly old lady means to him. Tender yet rarely sentimental, Ann Hui’s film is touching, humourous and masterfully acted. It celebrates the simple pleasures in life without shying away from the hard truths of ageing.
For 30 years, Stella and Dot have been through life’s ups and downs as a couple. When Dot is taken away to a nursing home against Stella’s will, the women decide to make a run for it, hitting the road in a last-ditch attempt to make things right. Their destination is Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. By turns hilariously crude and tender and boasting stellar performances by two Oscar-winners, this irreverent romantic comedy is a life-affirming celebration of love in all its forms.

SKYLAB Dir: Julie Delpy, France, 2011, French with English subtitles, 113 mins, (M) Cast: Julie Delpy, Emmanuelle Riva, Karin Viard
A funny and tender celebration of family and French joie-de-vivre.
From the director of Notting Hill comes this enchanting tale inspired by true events, centered around the weekend in 1939 when Britain’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the Roosevelt home in upstate New York. The royals’ serious mission to enlist American support as Hitler threatens Europe is undermined by cultural differences, the logistics of a royal visit and the American president’s tumultuous love life. The dawn of the Special Relationship is handsomely captured, benefitting from Bill Murray’s pitch-perfect performance as FDR.
It’s the summer of 1979 in Brittany, the day the Skylab is due to fall from its orbit. A family gathers for the matriarch’s birthday while the kids scan the heavens excitedly. Told through the eyes of 11 year-old Amandine, this jubilant reunion is filled with good food and wine, personal and political squabbles and the intrigue of first love. Actor-director Julie Delpy turns a simple autobiographical story into an elegiac ode to childhood, the 70s and innocence lost, served by some of France’s best loved actors, old and young.

A star-studded thriller about ageing activists confronted by their past.
A strikingly visual tale of adventure, camaraderie and peril in the high seas.
Sharon Solarz (Sarandon), once a member of the Weather Underground who has been living incognito as a housewife and mother, is arrested and charged with murder for decades-old radical activities. A young journalist (Shia LaBeouf) exposes her associate, small-town lawyer Jim Grant (Redford), who is forced to return undercover to clear his name of a murder he did not commit. Bringing together veteran actors who lived through the social unrest of the 70s, this thoughtful thriller evokes the best political thrillers of that era.
The 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition, helmed by charismatic anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, was one of the boldest experiments of the 20th century. In this Oscar-nominated drama, six young scientists leave their families behind to embark on a homemade balsa wood raft. Their reckless attempt to complete the 7,000km journey across the Pacific Ocean is brought vividly to life. A glorious return to old-fashioned adventure yarns, this visually stunning widescreen movie transports us to a place of wonder, telling a true story equal parts impressive, inspiring and entertaining.

A sexy, melodramatic and musical tale of French women in love.
Join us for an exciting free Gala Screening of the beloved musical!
Enchantingly led by Catherine Deneuve and real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni, this exquisitely romantic musical-drama follows a mother and daughter’s twin misadventures in love. From Paris to Prague to London, the 60s to the present, this epic yet intimate saga charts the rollercoaster ride of turbulent youth to bittersweet maturity and back. Beloved is a film of many delights, not least of which is the sight of Deneuve’s character strolling through Paris, singing through tears and revisiting her reckless youth.
It’s 1927 and the stars of the day are dashing leading man of the silent screen Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and self-absorbed bombshell Linda Lamont (Jean Hagen). The transition to sound threatens Linda’s career, until Don and his pal Cosmo come up with a plan to fool the audience... Combining music, dance and Hollywood satire to great effect, this is perhaps the defining film of MGM’s Golden Age. A rare musical whose story is as good as its memorable songs, this classic stills feel utterly fresh and invigorating today.

Rediscover the thrills and the beauty of this enduring, classic love story. Rick is a cynical but good-hearted American whose café in Casablanca acts as a waiting room for Europeans escaping Hitler. When his long-lost love Ilsa surfaces with her husband—a hero of the Resistance, Rick is pulled into a love triangle and a dangerous web of political intrigue. Boasting career-defining performances from Bogart and Bergman, Casablanca is an undisputed masterpiece, winning Oscars for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. It seems the film has only improved with age: a timeless love story we’re not likely to forget. “I find it never grows over-familiar. Casablanca plays like a favourite musical album; the more I know it, the more I like it.” ROGER EBERT, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES PRESENTED BY

This stylish caper will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.
A sun-drenched, toe-tapping tale of glamour, thrills and romance.
A romantic comedy disguised as a heist thriller, Stanley Donen’s entertaining caper follows Reggie as she attempts to make sense of her husband’s murder, $250 000 that has gone missing, and the identity of her attractive new friend Peter. A Hitchcockian thriller with a very light touch, Charade is first and foremost the chance to stroll with Cary Grant and a Givenchy-clad Audrey Hepburn through elegant Parisian streets to the sound of Henry Mancini’s timeless score.
Elvis Presley plays a carefree driver competing in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Working as a casino waiter to fund his race-car’s new engine, he still finds the time to chase the wrong girls, ignore the gorgeous Ann-Margaret (though they’re clearly made for each other), dance up a storm and belt out tune after tune. The real star here is Ann-Margaret, who steals every scene, forcing Elvis to up his acting game. Sizzling chemistry, charismatic performances and stunning dance numbers add up to sheer uncomplicated enjoyment.
Please note this film screens with open captions for the hard of hearing. “A light-hearted frivolous bauble but it was somehow meant to last, it’s a work of great craft and artistry. A marvellously fun movie.” NEW YORK TIMES

Relive the summer of ’62 with this evocative American masterpiece. American Graffiti is a humourous, nostalgic and bittersweet coming-of-age classic that follows two Californian teenagers one summer night in 1962, as they face decisions about the future. It’s a love letter to the music, the fast cars and the popular culture of a more innocent time, before the Vietnam War, set to the best soundtrack ever assembled in an American film. One of the most influential teen films of all time, its success launched many careers, including that of director George Lucas.
