THE ILLUSIONIST Casula Powerhouse | Thu 22 Mar | 12:30pm | PG Dir: Sylvain Chomet, France, 2010, 80 mins Cast: Jean-Claude Donda, Eilidh Rankin
Short films: Two Laps; Scone Wars; The Future; Adam’s Tallit; Punch Drunk; The Adviser; The Op Shop
A hand-drawn gem, this pan-European story of friendship is deep, clever and utterly enchanting.
Watch and vote for your favourite Australian short films with seniors in starring roles.
The illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With rock’n’roll stars taking centre stage in the late 1950s, he is forced to play increasingly obscure venues. One day he meets Alice, a young girl fascinated by magic. Alice stows away on his departing ship and follows him to Edinburgh, changing the illusionist’s life forever. From the director of Triplets of Belleville comes a masterful animated tribute to legendary French comic Jacques Tati; a remarkable film about letting go of one’s illusions and picking up a little wisdom along the way.
We’ve compiled a selection of the best new Australian short films starring actors over 60, and we’re screening the finalists of our annual short film competition at Casula Powerhouse. The short films are an entertaining mix of homegrown stories from comedy to drama, with a refreshing focus on seasoned actors. It’s your chance to take part in a prestigious event, discover Australia’s up and coming acting talent, both young and old, and vote for your favourite film.

Dir: Francis Ford Coppola, USA, 1974, 109 mins Cast: Gene Hackman, Teri Garr, Harrison Ford
At 83, this national treasure is still putting out hits and performing around the country.
A gripping thriller that cemented Coppola’s reputation as a master storyteller.
This engaging road movie documentary follows country music legend Chad Morgan and his wife Joanie as they perform throughout regional Australia. Affectionately narrated by rock musician Tex Perkins, this is an intimate portrait of an artist as an old man, 60 years after he first appeared on radio show Australia’s Amateur Hour in 1952. Don’t miss this gorgeous film about growing older, love, laughter and coming to terms with the past. Join us afterwards for a Q&A with the filmmaker!
Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is hired to track a couple, taping their conversation as they walk through San Francisco’s crowded Union Square. Harry is a cautious loner who keeps to himself, but he finds himself getting dangerously involved when the conversation he records reveals a plot to murder the young couple. A brilliant, prescient thriller for the Watergate era, Coppola’s Oscar-nominated film is now widely seen as a high watermark of American cinema.

Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a ballerina caught between art and love comes alive in this classic masterpiece. A young ballerina falls in love with the composer of the ballet that makes her an over-night star. The jealous ballet company director, however, demands loyalty and total commitment. Three grandmas learn that it’s never too late to dream in this crowd-pleasing coming-of-(old)-age story.
The master of suspense returns to London for this intense, melodramatic thriller.
Upon the death of her husband, 70-year-old Claire decides to reconnect with her estranged, wayward son, down and out R&B musician Sid. She asks him to help her restart the girl group from the old days she used to sing in with two of her friends. He’s into hip-hop, the girls prefer Jacques Brel, but somehow the collaboration brings everyone closer. Gentle humour permeates this bittersweet look at how our dreams can often be tested by the passing of time.
As the latest female victim of the “Necktie Murderer” is found raped and strangled in the Thames, the police narrow in on a suspect. Richard Blaney (Jon Finch) is a belligerent ex-Royal Air Force officer who has just lost his job. Trouble is, he’s entirely innocent. As Chief Inspector Oxford and his men tighten the noose around him, Richard goes on the run, desperate to prove his innocence. Tense, tightly plotted and masterfully executed, many critics consider Frenzy the last great Hitchcock film.

Board the Orient Express for a fun caper filled with romance, adventure and glamour!
A heartfelt Irish tale of unlikely friendship spiked with humour and adventure.
Adapted from Graham Greene’s novel, George Cukor’s comedy describes the education of shy, bookish bank clerk Henry under the influence of his eccentric and flamboyant long-lost aunt Augusta. The bohemian diva, played with theatrical gusto by the great Maggie Smith, pries Henry away from his stale existence, taking him on a caper from Paris to Istanbul involving old love affairs, espionage, kidnappings, and a decadent lifestyle he could previously only dream of.
The Runway is inspired by the true story of a South American pilot who crashed his plane near Mallow in Ireland. Against all odds, residents came together to build a runway to get him home, briefly catching the imagination of the nation. This is the story of Paco, a young boy without a father but with limited Spanish, who befriends the pilot and convinces the town to welcome the stranger into their midst. Beautifully photographed, this is a bittersweet, charming portrait of a sleepy community woken up by the unlikeliest of events.

Rachel Weisz shines in this moving period melodrama from British master Terence Davies. Hester Collyer leads a privileged life in 1950s London as the beautiful wife of a high court judge. To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage to move in with young ex-RAF pilot Freddie Page, with whom she has fallen passionately in love. Set in a gorgeously re-created postwar London, this adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s classic play is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness, featuring a poignant performance by Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz.

A deadpan, optimistic fairytale about the power of solidarity and community. In this warm-hearted portrait of the French harbour city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of well-spoken shoe-shiner Marcel Marx. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. Uplifting but never schmaltzy, this political fairy tale exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the whimsical cinema of Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati. Dir: Chris Menaul, UK, 2011, 116 mins Cast: Richard E. Grant, Sarah Brightman, Rosamund Pike
Dir: Genevieve Bailey, Australia, 2011, 93 mins
A light-hearted ensemble comedy about friendship, love and opera.
11-year-olds in 15 countries share their views on the world we live in.
Rich industrialist Adam (Richard E. Grant) decides to stage an opera at his lavish country retreat. A troupe of sexy young singers are invited, along with Celia (Phantom of the Opera star Sarah Brightman), an opera director Adam has a serious crush on. In the lead up to the first night of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, the opera’s themes of love, rivalry and misunderstandings are hilariously mirrored in real life. The lively script, stunning location and glorious music make for delightful escapism.
Four years in the making, I Am Eleven is a global snapshot of humanity at a crucial age. No longer children, not quite adults, 11-year-olds are inheriting a world changing as quickly and dramatically as they are. In this insightful documentary portrait, children speak articulately about family, religion, love, bullying, racism…their fears and aspirations. They have a lot to teach us, and Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey’s curious camera captures the sincerity, optimism and wisdom of the next generation. Like the 7’UP series, this makes for enthralling cinema.
