Jeffrey Erdman made history at Los Angeles Leather Pride this month for being the very first Mr. Christopher St. West Leather man to win the Mr. L.A. Leather 2016 title. In an exclusive first interview with Paulo Murillo (“And The Winner Is,” page 19), minutes after winning the title, Erdman talked about how he plans to use that title as a platform to bring awareness to an older LGBT generation. “When I did the work around meth addiction in my generation, it was a very particular part of our community,” says Erdman. “It was also very significant to me that more than half the people living with HIV today are over 50. There is a huge population of long-term survivors. That’s very important for me, but then I started looking at the bigger picture around housing and concerns about isolation. Elder gay seniors are very likely to be isolated and fall into depression and fall into more serious complications, so we have to get them out of isolation, get them out of their homes and around people who love them and care for them. That’s what I’d like to do, is provide more service and more opportunity for seniors to come together with other people.” Also in this issue Eliad Cohen,
the host of White Party’s “Papa,” in Palm Springs this month talks about growing up gay in Israel (“Come To Papa,” page 28). “Now I’m totally out of the closet… and all my family and friends know,” reveals Cohen. “In the beginning they were shocked, their perception of gay were the stereotypes they saw on TV, guys with pink t-shirts and long blonde hair dancing in an effeminate way… But over time they learned to accept it and love me as I am. Also - as the time goes by—the word ‘gay’ isn’t as negative as it used to be—at least in Western cultures.” Speaking of White Party—Manny Rodriguez, Executive Director and Founder of La Fuente Hollywood Treatment Center, explains how to enjoy White Party Palm Springs in the best possible way (“When To Leave The Party,” page 40). “How we conduct ourselves in any situation is a golden opportunity to truly express the gift of recovery wherever we are and with everyone we meet,” writes Rodriguez. “Creating a plan for safety in a party environment—whether you are attending, working or otherwise—for newly sober people is crucial for avoiding the triggers and pitfalls of relapse.”

CHOSE TO IGNORE Dear Editor, Kudos to International Mr. Leather Patrick Smith for going out of the box and using his platform to highlight what is going on with our brothers and sisters beyond our borders (“They Kill Gays, Don’t They?” THE FIGHT Issue #62). We, as Americans, tend to be isolated from current events around the world. We can no longer be an island onto ourselves. If we ignore what is happening now with the horrific violence against the LGBT community in the world we would be no better than those who chose to ignore the plight of Jews during Nazi Germany. —Edward Lancaster, via the internet
WON’T BE ANGRY Dear Editor, All leather, all the time, yes! I realize that the current issue (THE FIGHT Issue #62) is “leather heavy” because of Leather Pride week - but just a quick note to let you know - I won’t be angry if you have more leather, bear and kink related articles in your magazine! Aside from that, thank you for covering everyone in our community, not just the WeHo crowd. —Joe Gonzales, via the internet
MADE A DIFFERENCE Dear Editor, I was very saddened to read about retired gay LAPD officer Mitchell Grobeson’s domestic problems for which he was arrested. (THE FIGHT Issue #62). Grobeson took LAPD to court over 25 years ago for alleged harassment for being gay. In the end Grobeson won monetary compensation and a promise by the department to improve its recruitment, hiring and training of gay officers. I don’t know the specific details regarding his arrest due to a domestic dispute - but I would hate for people not to realize that this man made a difference in how the LAPD treats its gay officers. —Michael Gregory, Los Angeles, CA

barber has denied a trans man service after he claimed his religion prevents him from cutting women’s hair, reports Gay Star News. Kendall Oliver, who served for six years in Afghanistan, booked an appointment at Southern California’s The Barbershop in Rancho Cucamonga. He said that when he went in for his appointment, they told him that they wouldn’t cut his hair. When Oliver explained he was not a woman, he identified as a male, they still refused. “It doesn’t matter ma’am, we still won’t cut a woman’s hair,” Oliver claims they said, calling the treatment “‘hurtful” and “embarrassing.” Speaking to NBC7, owner Richard Hernandez said he belongs to the Church of God and that his beliefs stop him from cutting a woman’s hair, even if they identify as a man. “People go against what God has created, you start getting everything all out of whack,” he said. “It’s a shame for a man to have long hair, but if a woman has long hair, it’s her glory and it speaks to being given to her as her covering, and I don’t want to be one who is taking away from her glory.” While Hernandez’s church in Upland did not return calls, the Church of God in Garden Grove said there was no doctrine that does not allow a man to cut a woman’s hair in their church. In California, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Oliver is suing The Barbershop for discrimination. n

A Los Angeles father has been accused of killing his son with a shotgun because he is gay. Shehada Khalil Issa, 69, faces murder charges after his son Amir Issa, 38, was found shot dead outside their North Hills home last month, the result of what prosecutors say was a hate crime. An investigation into the death of the victim’s mother, who was found dead from stab wounds inside the house’s bathroom, is still ongoing. The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office said that the 69-year-old had previously threatened to kill his son because he is gay. Shehada Khalil Issa faces one count of premeditated murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

PALM SPRINGS IN FAVOR OF N.C. TRAVEL BAN KESQ News reports that the Mayor of Palm Springs, Robert Moon, is in favor of a decision to impose a ban of all city expensed travel to North Carolina after NC passed a new anti-LGBT law known as PALM SPRINGS the “transgender bathroom MAYOR ROBERT MOON bill,” which removes all protections of people based on sexual orientation and gender identity when using public facilities like restrooms. “I think it’s outrageous that this is going on, and I think we need to express our displeasure and disagreement with this type of government-sponsored discrimination,” Moon told KESQ. Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights recently asked the state of California to stand up to LGBT attacks.

effrey Erdman made history at Los Angeles Leather Pride this month for being the very first Mr. Christopher St. West Leather man to win the Mr. L.A. Leather 2016 title. First runner up is Mr. SoCal Leather Eric Slayton; second runner up is Mr. Sister Leather Joe Gregory. Erdman will now go on to compete at this year’s International Mr. Leather (IML) competition in Chicago in May. In an interview with THE FIGHT, moments after his name was announced as the winner, Erdman talked about what winning the title means to him, how he plans to use that title as a platform to bring awareness to an older LGBT generation and what he hopes to get out of IML. Congratulations on your win! You’re the first Mr. CSW Leather man to win the Mr. L.A. Leather title. How does that feel? I can’t breathe. I tend to hold my breath a lot. Oh my goodness. I feel amazing. This is really a rush. It’s really exciting. I had no idea when I started this journey that this was going to happen. Did you think that you were going to win? Going into it, I thought there was no chance. I was the first contestant and I saw all the contestants come after me and I thought he’s amazing, he’s going to win. I didn’t think this would happen until we started prepping for the contest and it was coming together and I thought, this could actually happen. People were asking me, do you really want to win? I had to ask myself the same question and thought, fuck yeah, I really do want to win. What does wining this title mean to you? It means a lot of things. It means respect from my community, which is really important to me. I really cherish earning people’s respect and that I’m worthy of that respect. What I hope to really do is turn that respect into great things for our community. I want to be able to use this as
“I WANT TO BE ABLE TO USE THIS AS A PLATFORM TO USE MY VOICE AND SPEAK OUT FOR POSITIVE CHANGES— ESPECIALLY IN MY GENERATION…” What are some of the issues you are passionate about? When I did the work around meth addiction in my generation, it was a very particular part of our community. It was also very significant to me that more than half the people living with HIV today are over 50. There is a huge population of longterm survivors. That’s very important for me, but then I started looking at the bigger picture around housing and concerns about isolation. Elder gay seniors are very likely to be isolated and fall into depression and fall into more serious complications, so we have to get them out of isolation, get them out of their homes and around people who love them and care for them. That’s what I’d like to do, is provide more service and more opportunity for seniors to come together with other people. Are there other issues you’d like to address down the line? Yes, there are obviously many things that need to be done or can be done. I have a 20 year-old son who was homeless at the age of 13. He was HIV positive and living in shelters and I was with him and mentored him into getting into college and he’s finishing his second year, and that’s really been my personal journey and I hope I continue to do that kind of work with gay youth and show them the importance of education. Kit Williamson is best known for playing the role of Ed Gifford on the final two seasons of Mad Men and for EastSiders, an LGBT web series he created and stars in that, just this Friday, received two Daytime Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Daytime Digital Drama Series, and is now available on Vimeo On Demand.

ctor and filmmaker Kit Williamson is overjoyed to announce his wedding to longtime partner John Halbach, but has expressed disappointment in the antigay “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act” (also known as HB 1523) that passed the senate last month in his home state of Mississippi. House Bill 1523 would allow clerks to deny same-sex marriage licenses to gay couples because of their religious beliefs and not face any repercussions. It would also allow private businesses and faith-based organizations to refuse services based on those same beliefs without retribution. “Planning the wedding, I was struck by just how vulnerable you are. You have to rely on so many vendors and government employees and you may not know any of them personally,” says Williamson. “I wouldn’t want to buy a cake from a bigot anyway, but I can think of nothing more traumatizing than having the happiest day of your life tainted with bigotry. It saddens me to think that it’s now legal to treat gay couples in Mississippi like second-class citizens.”

“I CAN THINK OF NOTHING MORE TRAUMATIZING THAN HAVING THE HAPPIEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE TAINTED WITH BIGOTRY. IT SADDENS ME TO THINK THAT IT’S NOW LEGAL TO TREAT GAY COUPLES IN MISSISSIPPI LIKE SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS.” On February 27, he married his longtime partner, actor John Halbach, in an intimate ceremony at Keys View in Joshua Tree National Park, overlooking the San Jacinto Mountains and the Salton Sea, followed by a reception at a private home in Palm Springs, California. It was attended by Constance Wu from the ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat, Stephen Guarino from the ABC comedy Happy Endings and the upcoming Showtime comedy I’m Dying Up Here, Brea Grant from the NBC series Heroes, young adult novelist Brittany Cavallaro, Out100 honoree actor Ben Baur and more. The couple wore green and blue herringbone suits from Ted Baker and exchanged platinum wedding brands from the sustainable jewelry company Brilliant Earth. “It is my sincere hope for any couple in Mississippi, gay or straight, that they will be treated with respect and kindness by everyone they encounter on the road to the altar,” Williamson says, “because a wedding should be a day filled with love, not hate.”

“RELIGIOUS FREEDOM” BILLS
have given no thought whatsoever to the impact of these regulations on the vulnerable little women who will be forced to share the sinks with scary bearded muscular he-men. Is it politically sound as a longterm civil rights strategy to emphasize passing? Not at all. But it works for this fight, and this is the fight of the moment. It’s no accident, by the way, that South Dakota governor Dennis Daugaard vetoed his state’s bathroom bill after meeting with transgendered activists. Ditto the lawmakers in Tennessee who dropped their effort after a similar hearing with trans men and women. These officials have to see our community in stark relief in order to see the light, as does the uninformed public.
S
ince last we spoke, a “religious freedom” bill has reached the Georgia governor’s desk, and the North Carolina legislature has passed a law that both bans transgender men and women from their normal bathrooms and prevents local entities and universities from protecting GLBT citizens (and others) against bias. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal bravely vetoed his state’s bill. But North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory (who unlike Deal is running for reelection) signed the Tobacco State measure into law, triggering a national backlash that we hope and pray gains steam over coming weeks. The North Carolina bill was introduced and passed in a matter of hours during a special session of the legislature while McCrory waited in his office, pen in hand. Lawmakers explained that without the measure, a local ordinance set to take effect in Charlotte would have allowed predatory men to use the ladies room at will, jeopardizing the safety of women and girls. The new law solves this dire threat by clarifying that use of public facilities should be based on an individual’s birth certificate gender. For the record, it’s not easy to change your birth certificate in North Carolina and you need to have surgery to do so. Corporations and sports institutions like the NCAA, the NBA and the NFL, have come out in opposition to this law, and several cities and at least three states have banned official travel to North Carolina. Lambda and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a federal suit against the state, and North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is running against McCrory this year, opposes the new statute and refuses to defend it in court.
SEVERAL MACHO-LOOKING TRANSMEN HAVE POSTED SELFIES, ASKING NORTH CAROLINA POLITICIANS AND CITIZENS IF THEY REALLY WANT TO FORCE TRANSMEN LIKE THEMSELVES TO JOIN THE LADIES IN THE TOILETTES. TRANS-MANSPLAINING
S
everal macho-looking transmen have posted selfies, asking North Carolina politicians and citizens if they really want to force transmen like themselves to join the ladies in the toilettes. I’ve always thought this was the best way to fight these bathroom laws. You don’t want men in the little girls’ room? Well, just look at these guys! What are you thinking? However, the trans community itself is split on the tactic, pointing out that the strategy undermines those in the transgendered community
2 4 T H E F I GH T | www.thefightmag.com
who cannot pass as easily as some transmen. I see their point, but I disagree. The whole bathroom attack is targeted against transwomen, and is based on the notion that MTF women are nothing more than dangerous guys in drag with peculiar attitudes that threaten wives and daughters. Transmen who pass easily personify the irony of these rules, as they clearly illustrate a far more jarring level of bathroom awkwardness than any scenario the lawmakers could have envisioned. Indeed, I actually think most of these oblivious representatives aren’t even aware of transmen, and
HRC MISFIRES
S
o here’s a dilemma for the Human Rights Campaign. If you want to remain non-partisan, you have to extend a hand to a Republican now and again. Years and years ago, Elizabeth Birch gave five grand to the GOP congressional fund, a generic pot of money that helped elect Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America” cohort in 1994. Nearly a quarter century later, I have not really forgiven them for that. Now, our DC lobbyists have endorsed sitting Illinois senator Mark Kirk, a Republican who I think is the only GOP senator to sponsor our signature legislation, the Equality Act. I applaud Kirk for his support, but the man also backs Donald Trump, and is running against Tammy Duckworth, who earns a 100 percent rating in support of GLBT rights. Further, Illinois is one of the key contests for Democratic control of the Senate, a paramount goal for our community if there ever was one.
>> RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, TRANS-MAN SPLAINING, HRC MISFIRES, BRUNCH AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS <<
The answer for HRC? You cannot operate like this. You cannot undermine the larger goals of the community you represent in order to forge short-term strategic alliances with moderate Republicans, if those still really exist. You have to lobby people like Mark Kirk, but make clear that you do not have an endorsement to trade. I don’t know how. That’s why it’s a dilemma. Maybe you come up with another kind of statement short of an endorsement. Or maybe you simply don’t win support for your legislative goal—-a failure which would reveal something of the heart of the politician in question. You know, it’s also quite possible to have a “non-partisan” mission statement, but prefer Democrats down the line. That doesn’t mean you’re “partisan,” it means Republicans have a lot of catching up to do.
BRUNCH AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
D
id any of you catch Maureen Dowd‘s piece in the Times about the Beverly Hills Hotel? The chic celebrity gathering spot was the subject of a boycott a couple of years ago based on the fact that its owner, the Sultan of Brunei, believes in capital punishment for homosexuality. Now, according to Dowd and her host with the most, Max Mutchnik, political correctness is wearing thin and brunch is back. What’s more important, mused Mutchnik, fluffy pancakes and warm maple syrup, or gay rights? Hey, it’s enough to give many of us pause. Mutchnik observed, and I paraphrase, that if you look closely enough, you’ll find a reason to object to dozens of establishments. Sometimes, you

sequently felt it was too late to change. And then, sadly, I tried some Romanian wine only because I had allowed it to become an attractive taboo item. Also, I couldn’t remember why it was on the hit list to begin with. (I just checked. In the late 1990s, the call came to avoid Romanian wine because the country passed the worst antigay law in Europe. It’s not clear why wine was singled out. Now, one website says Romanian gays have “excellent legal protection,” and celebrate “GayFest” every year. Noroc!) I’m sure I have failed to act in solidarity with my gay brothers and sisters on many occasions, but I have tried and I do believe in targeting our corporate foes. That said, brunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel sounds very tempting. I’m not sure I’d pass that up. n
don’t have to look that closely. We could all wind up either boycotting everything or being selective hypocrites. Should we avoid the shows on Fox? Nix dealings with any company that has business in countries with bad laws? You get the picture. I’m torn, because I’ve been a pretty bad activist myself. I dutifully boycotted Coors, Romanian wine, Chick-Fil-A, Barilla pasta, and other replaceable brands. But it got complicated. I couldn’t remember whether or not I should shop at Lowes or Home Depot. (Lowes is bad, Depot is good.) For awhile I accidentally boycotted Buitoni instead of Barilla by mistake. Coors became good again, but I avoided the brand for years out of ignorance. “It’s terrible. People have told me I’m not gay enough, people have told me I’m not black enough. I don’t know what that means. You want to be accepted by other people but you don’t even accept someone just because of the color of their skin? I just don’t understand that at all.” The former NFL star continues: “How are you saying that, ‘oh, I want people to accept me because I’m gay but I don’t accept you because you’re black, or because you’re white or because you’re Asian’. I don’t understand that. It baffles me how screwed up society is. Because where I’m from. we don’t judge a person by the color of their skin, we judge them by the character of their heart. There are a lot of people whose hearts are cold and that’s sad.”

ichael Sam might have faced a backlash from middle America when he came out to a frenzy of media interest in 2014, but in the latest issue of the U.K based magazine Attitude the football star reveals how shocked he was to be confronted with racism from within the gay community itself after taking the plunge publicly. The 26-year-old features across an exclusive 10-page spread in Attitude’s May Issue, in which he discusses everything from his experience growing up gay as a Jehovah’s Witness to the racism he’s been subjected to on social media from other gay men. “I will say this, since I came out, I did not realize how much racism there actually is in the gay community,” he tells Attitude.

Sam said that in his experience the black community is generally more accepting of his homosexuality, and that his most vocal critics have members of the religious community. “People tell me they have family members who are gay and it doesn’t freak them out, and no black person ever freaked out at me, ‘Oh, you’re gay.’ None.” Looking back at his coming out journey, Sam says that he has no regrets. “I was so naive when I came out. I wasn’t thinking about anybody else trying to be an inspiration or advocate or activist, whatever, I wasn’t trying to be anything but just to get that over with so I could stop focusing on me. “Then I started reading things that was going around, from people: emails, letters, Tweets, messages, everything – they were more positive than negative. ‘People said oh my god I just can’t believe you had the courage to do that’. I said, ‘I’m just living my life.’” Check out Sam’s full shoot and interview in the new issue of Attitude, available to download now at pocketmags.com/attitude.

COME TO PAPA
White Party’s Eliad Cohen on growing up gay in Israel, his modeling breakthrough and parties with masculine vibes and music. BY MA RK ARI EL | PHOTO BY BRUNO OLVEZ
E
liad Cohen, 27, the host of White Party’s “PAPA,” in Palm Springs this month, is “the extreme embodiment of the contemporary Israeli gay man: He lives freely and openly, strives for success and self-actualization and makes no apology for his masculinity or sexuality,” according to the prestigious mainstream Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Aside from being a world renowned party promoter, actor, model and entrepreneur, Cohen, it would seem, may have what it takes to bring peace to the Middle East. Photographs of him in underwear, a bathing suit or an Israeli Defense Forces uniform have become extremely popular, particularly on the Internet, receiving responses such as, “I want peace now with Israel after seeing you,” reports Haaretz. In an interview with THE FIGHT Cohen, originally from Acre, a small town in Northern Israel, talks about being gay in the army, his modeling breakthrough and parties with masculine vibes and music. What was it like growing up gay in Acre—a much more conservative town than Tel Aviv. My childhood in Acre was actually a lot of fun. As a child I always felt that I had an attraction to men—but I didn’t act upon it. I competed in national judo contests and was number 3 in Israel… I even had a girlfriend for two years… Being gay in Acre is alright in the sense that no one will hurt someone because he’s gay. Kids might laugh when they hear about it and and others will just think it’s weird… Now I’m totally out of the closet of course and all my family and friends from Acre know… In the beginning they were shocked, their perception of gay were the stereotypes they saw on TV, guys with

pink t-shirts and long blonde hair dancing in an effeminate way. But over time they learned to accept it and love me as I am. Also—as the time goes by—the word “gay” isn’t as negative as it used to be—at least in Western cultures.
“I CAME OUT AFTER MY ARMY SERVICE… LOOKING BACK, I’M SURE IF I TOLD [THE SOLDIERS IN MY UNIT] THEY WOULD HAVE ACCEPTED ME, BUT AT THAT TIME I DIDN’T FULLY ACCEPT MYSELF…” When did you come out—and how was it for you? I came out after my army service at the age of 21. I already had a boyfriend, which gave me more confidence. I told my mom first—she was very shocked and it was hard for her in the beginning—but within two months tine she was already cooking food for the weekend for me and my boyfriend and she came to visit us in Tel Aviv… My mom is just amazing [smiles]… After telling her I felt like a huge stone had been lifted from my soul and it made me really happy! No more lies—just be myself. What was it like being a closeted gay man during your army service?
I was in a special, small unit and my friends there was like real brothers to me… we took showers together and even slept hugging one another… Looking back, I’m sure if I told them they would have accepted me, but at that time I didn’t fully accept myself, so even if they were accepting of me I would not have felt comfortable anymore to take showers and sleep together because I would have been worried that they would think I was looking at them in a different way —even if that wasn’t the case. After I completed my service I told my best friends that I’m gay—they didn’t believe me in the beginning— but after they realized that was the truth—they were really cool with it— they told me that they love me as I am—and they even came with me a few times to gay parties. You were the cover model of the Spartacus International Gay Guide for their 2011-2012 issue. How did that come about? Right after the army I moved to Tel Aviv. I was a personal trainer during the day and a bartender at night. One Saturday night I was working at a bar on the beach. Two guys from Berlin came to the bar and told me that they are doing article about Tel Aviv and asked if I would mind them taking a photograph of me for the article. I said sure, no problem. About a month after the photo was published and I received an email from Spartacus saying that they wanted me to be on the cover of 2011—2012 issue. This was my first modeling job. What exactly is the “PAPA series?” I started PAPA Party six years ago at the Tel Aviv Pride Festival. I decided to
>> ELIAD COHEN <<
call it PAPA because in Hebrew (and other languages) it is the slang term for a very hot masculine guy. I added a mustache to the logo because that also—to me—represents a sexy masculine guy. The idea of PAPA in the beginning was about a party with masculine vibes and music. As time went by the PAPA Party become more and more mainstream and now it’s whole production with an LED screen and special visual arts, lighting, the hottest go-go dancers on stage and the the best DJs in the world. What can you tell us about PAPAWEAR? I started PAPAWEAR two years ago. In the beginning it wasn’t for sale actually… one day I wore an “I LOVE PAPA” swimsuit to the beach and a lot of people approached me and asked where they could buy it … so I got in touch with a designer friend from Colombia—Miguel Estavez— and we decided to make a cool collections for all the PAPITOS! How did you get involved with White Party? Jeffery Sanker and I had a common friend—he initiated the connection between us. After the first 10 minutes of talking on FaceTime— we felt like good friends that have known each other for a long time . We have a really good connection and we liked and appreciated each other’s the work… We had our first PAPA in Los Angeles on Valentine’s Day this year—and the party was a huge success—with amazing energy! A few days later Jeffery told me that they want PAPA to be the closing party of White Party. Is there anything we haven’t asked you that you would like to share with our readers? I hope to see you you all at White Party in Palm Springs this month! We are preparing an amazing high energy show with awesome music. In the end it’s all about the PAPITOS and the energy they bring that makes PAPA Party unique. I’m sure it gonna be unforgettable night! VERY PURPOSEFUL KENNY NEAL SHULTS
REACHING HIGHER RISK MEN
“Like to Party” PrEP campaign creator Kenny Neal Shults responds to AHF complaint. BY BREN D EN SH U CA RT
I
n the most recent salvo in their campaign against the HIV prevention strategy PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has filed a formal complaint against Gilead Sciences—makers of the only medication currently approved for use as PrEP. In a letter to Dr. Stephen Ostroff, acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug administration, AHF CEO Michael 3 2 T H E F I GH T | www.thefightmag.com
Weinstein called on the FDA to sanction Gilead for it’s role in funding a PrEPawareness PSA featuring adult film actor JD Phoenix, claiming the video promotes “off-label,” situational use of the PrEP as a “party drug.” In the complaint, Weinstein claims the PSA misleadingly implies that “Truvada can be effectively used exclusively on a situational basis to prevent HIV infection
“The accusation is patently false, obviously,” says Kenny Neal Shults, Connected Health Solutions, a long time HIV activist and member of the creative team behind the campaign. “It is very clear that JD Phoenix is adhering to a regimen. A daily alarm goes off which says ‘Time to PrEP.’ He picks up a seven-day pill dispenser, and holds up a pill which falls out of it. What JD is saying is, I am adhering to a regimen and so can you.” The complaint goes on to accuse the campaign of going “even further than promoting off-label usage of Truvada and essentially promotes illicit drug use as part of an “I Like to Party” lifestyle. At one point, one of the ads clearly shows the primary actor reaching for recreational drugs as he leaves his home for an evening of “partying.” The “primary actor” is of course, JD Phoenix. Shults calls the choice to cast Phoenix in the campaign “very purposeful.” “In this particular case we are using social learning theory, which essentially says: through observational learning a model can bring forth new ways of thinking and behaving.” “JD in this case is ‘the model.’ He is both a star and a young man who admittedly enjoys partying. He seemed the perfect model for reaching out to a target population who may be using substances—whether that’s crystal meth, cocaine, or simply alcohol. In this case ‘partying’ is a catch-all term for people coping, using drugs and alcohol.” “I’m sort of hearing myself as I say this and it’s interesting to hear myself refer to gay men as using drugs and alcohol to cope, whereas if we were talking about the young men on Jersey Shore, or any 20-something straight man whose sole purpose in life seems to be getting laid...” “Very typically young men do like to party. As such they expose themselves to greater risk—of drunk driving, or you name it—in this case we are talking about HIV.” “So what we’re trying to do is use a model that the target population can relate to so that we can communicate—without judgement—that people who admittedly
> > K E N N Y N E A L S C H U LT S < <
like to party are capable of adhering to a regimen. That’s one of the biggest criticisms we’ve heard against PrEP—that “these partiers” won’t be able to manage taking a pill every day. “That’s why JD at the very beginning of the video—along with a condom and some keys—grabs a small packet of pills. In that packet is an extra Truvada, so in case he finds himself sleeping out—over at someone’s house or he finds himself at a party for a couple days, who knows?—at least he has his pills. “We are modeling a way that young men who party can adhere to this regimen. It’s not rocket science. “Weinstein’s accusations just clearly have no basis in reality.”
FINGER WAGGING Though, that’s not to say Shults doesn’t see methamphetamine as a dire threat to the health of men who have sex with men, and a driver of HIV infection. “I think it’s paramount that we find some way to address this issue. I’ve been in HIV prevention for a long time and I
“WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO IS USE A MODEL THAT THE TARGET POPULATION CAN RELATE TO SO THAT WE CAN COMMUNICATE— WITHOUT JUDGEMENT…” don’t see nearly enough being done about this problem ... but I don’t think our efforts to expose this population to [PrEP] are standing in the way of those efforts. Nor do i feel our piece glamorizes drug use. It is always challenging when marketing to trigger the salience meters of the target population without looking like we’re pandering or condoning or whatnot.” “Now, we’re not selling a product—
we’re not trying to get people to buy some piece of plastic shit they don’t need—we’re trying to inform people about a life-saving innovation. What I think was really smart about what we’ve done is we chose JD to do that, who is very vocal about his own struggle with crystal meth. This is not a man who would ever promote or condone the use of crystal methamphetamine It’s very clear that it’s something he’s struggled with for many years. It was very purposeful to use JD in this setting, because this is a person who is very ambivalent about his own relationship to the pornography industry, HIV, and drugs—and therefore promotes critical thinking and discourse about this issue, and allow the target population to determine whether or not this is something that feels right to them.” “I don’t see what Weinstein is doing about the crystal meth problem. I would love to see him addressing it in some meaningful way, but all i really see him doing is shaming and finger wagging.” AHF did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

showing high rates of mental health problems including suicidal behavior in transgender children, Dr. Ilana Sherer, a Dublin, California, pediatrician, wrote in a Pediatrics editorial. Most previous research is in children who haven’t come out, Olson said. Study children had not had any sex reassignment treatment, and some parents initially opposed letting their kids come out.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Study: transgender children fare well when allowed to live openly. BY VICTO R MELA MED
Y
oung transgender children allowed to live openly as the gender they identify with fared as well psychologically as other kids in a small study that suggests parental support may be the key, reported the Associated Press last month. Rates of depression and anxiety were equal in the study, which compared 73 transgender kids aged 3 to 12 with 73 non-transgender youngsters. The trans kids also fared as well on both measures as a group of their non-transgender siblings. Rates of anxiety among trans kids were “a smidge higher” than national averages for children of the same age, but otherwise they matched national norms, said lead author Kristina Olson, an associate psychology professor at
the University of Washington. She said it’s the largest study to examine the psychological health of transgender youth who have socially transitioned. Parents recruited from support groups, conferences and a special website rated their kids’ well-being on a standard mental health scale. The parents weren’t randomly selected and Olson acknowledged that parents of kids who aren’t well-adjusted may have opted not to take part. The study “certainly suggests that family support is linked to better mental health,” although that idea wasn’t tested directly and Olson said the results don’t prove that is the explanation for the children’s well-being. The results were published in the journal Pediatrics. The findings are “truly stunning,” given previous studies

with mixed feelings, mourning the loss of a daughter but never wavering in love and support for Daniel. Olson, the study author, said the results don’t apply to all transgender kids, especially those whose parents oppose their change in identity. Opponents of allowing these youngsters to adopt names, hairstyles, clothes and pronouns opposite their birth gender have argued that kids so young “can-
“… TO REDUCE STIGMA SURROUNDING TRANSGENDER PEOPLE OF ANY AGE, WE NEED A LOT MORE EDUCATION AND VISIBILITY, NOT JUST RESEARCH STUDIES.” Micah Heumann, an academic adviser at the University of Illinois‘s Champaign campus, was among study participants. His 10-year-old child, Daniel, was born female, but has identified as a boy ever since he knew about gender, Heumann said. In second grade, the family agreed to let Daniel legally change his name and at the boy’s request, his school agreed to go along with the change, even letting Daniel use the boy’s bathroom. “He is very well-adjusted” but still feels stress because he knows not everyone is so accepting, Heumann said. Daniel “was very anxious before coming out at school,” but refused the option of keeping the secret, Heumann recalled. “He looked at me and said, ‘Dad, I can’t. It’s harder to live a lie and not as I am truly than to deal with this anxiety right now.’” Heumann said the family reacted to Daniel’s choice
not possibly know their gender at such an early age,” said Sherer, the editorial writer. Letting these kids live openly as the gender they identify with “can be an incredibly affirming process,” Sherer said, “showing the child that their identity is supported.” She was not involved in the research. Although the findings are reassuring in terms of the impact of social transitioning, Dr Olsen does not believe that they will, of themselves, dispel some of the prejudice and misunderstandings around transitioning. “I think to reduce stigma surrounding transgender people of any age, we need a lot more education and visibility, not just research studies,” she said. “I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic that this work and future work from my lab and other labs will help us to better understand when and for whom social transitioning in early development is helpful.” n

WHEN TO LEAVE THE PARTY
Manny Rodriguez, Executive Director and Founder of La Fuente Hollywood Treatment Center, on how to enjoy White Party Palm Springs in the best possible way. BY MA N N Y RO D RIG U EZ

he world famous and legendary White Party Palm Springs descends upon us yearly with major glitz, glamour and top-tier talent. Lucky for me—I have a front row seat. Well… not really, I am more like the 40 4 0 TH T H E F IGH I GH T | www.thefightmag.com
person taking tickets and ensuring everything goes smoothly at the door. Yup….it’s a gig I’ve had the privilege of being offered for the last seven years. I look forward to it and welcome the change from my responsibility of running the very fabulous
La Fuente Hollywood Treatment Center! White Party provides a deluxe list of A-Class events for several days that consistently lives up to its promise of ongoing fun to the men and even a few women who travel across the national and international globe. Some of you may be thinking, “why he is contributing a story on “this weekend?” My reasons are several… give me a moment. After-hours, pumping music and keeping the party going as long as I could were the norm for many years; until it just became harder to manage. In August of 1993 it all came to a crashing halt when I hit bottom from alcohol and drug dependence. This was long coming and I finally mustered up the courage to ask for help. While this was a much-needed change, my job at this time was of “club promoter” for the legendary nights named “The Temple” and “Pump.” My greatest fear being newly sober was of relapsing… if and when I returned to work. This was a pretty serious dilemma. I had the good fortune to be under the care of an excellent therapist and an understanding business partner/lifelong friend (DJ Eddie X) who I shared my concerns with. We reviewed the pros and cons as well as the dangers of returning to a job where alcohol was served and party favors readily accessible. At the heart of this conversation was the reality that my “club promoter” job was the only means I had for being self-supporting. What would I do? We decided that I would at least attempt returning to work. Together we created a plan to help me navigate through an experience I had no reference points for but one that my life depended on. The key part of this plan was that I was to immediately leave work or any situation if I felt that my recovery was at risk at any time. Drinking and drugging spelled death for me and I knew this. Following that plan
>> MANNY RODRIGUEZ <<
CREATING A PLAN FOR SAFETY IN A PARTY ENVIRONMENT—WHETHER YOU ARE ATTENDING, WORKING OR OTHERWISE—FOR NEWLY SOBER PEOPLE IS CRUCIAL FOR AVOIDING THE TRIGGERS AND PITFALLS OF RELAPSE. and staying sober allowed me to be even better at that job and also helped open other doors up to this current date. This very same dilemma is one I come across on a daily basis in my work with newly sober people. My experience and plan are not “a one size fits all” plan and probably not one I would recommend very freely. However, what I always recommend is to come up with a plan that is realistic, attainable and that is attached to accountability. Creating a plan for safety in a party environment whether you are attending, working or otherwise for newly sober
people is crucial for avoiding the triggers and pitfalls of relapse. Here are some of suggestions for creating a plan: • Share your concerns or allow others to share theirs if you are newly sober and are attending or working in a party environment. • Have a means of transportation so that you can leave if you feel triggered. • Involve your employer in your plan if possible. • Have a list of people you can call for support. • Attend party events with other sober
people or individuals that have your best interest at hand and support your recovery. People newly in recovery many times wonder if they will ever have fun again. There are also many individuals struggling with addiction and who desire recovery but resist seeking it out of fear that their lives will become dull without the drinking and drugging. My experience was that the fun changed after getting sober and that when it was time to leave… I left. One of the greatest things I have learned from working yearly at the biggest party weekend is that almost all of the gay men who attend are kind, hard working, love celebrating their lives and are not strung out. This has also been a great opportunity to express kindness and love even when I bear the brunt of a guest’s unhappiness for the all so many reasons that come up. How we conduct ourselves in any situation is a golden opportunity to truly express the gift of recovery wherever we are and with everyone we meet!

DEATH PENALTY FOR COMING OUT ONLINE
“The internet is the only safe haven to LGBT individuals in the Middle East. If this is taken...we won’t have anywhere else to go.”
A
new report out of Saudi Arabia states that Saudi citizens who come out online could face the death penalty, reports Cody Gohl at www.newnownext.com. Okaz, a Saudi newspaper, released a report last month that prosecutors out of the city of Jeddah have proposed the new penalty in response to dozens of cases city officials have prosecuted over the last six months, which includes the sentencing of 35 individuals for sodomy. The proposal put forth by Jeddah, to monitor the internet and violently punish individuals who come out online, has shaken members of Saudi Arabia’s LGBT community, reports www.newnownext.com. As Saudi Arabia remains firm in it stance that consensual samesex activity is punishable by death, the Internet has become the one safe space through which LGBT Saudis can interact with one
another. If the measures taken in Jeddah were to extend to the rest of the country, this safe space would be destroyed. “We can’t do a thing about it, but try to make some noise so activists from other countries would hear about it and talk to their politicians to pressure Saudi to change its policies,” said one anonymous Saudi Twitter user to the Washington Blade. “The Internet is the only safe haven to LGBT individuals in the Middle East. If this is taken from us, we
won’t have anywhere else to go.” n

he Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA), whose mission is to change hearts and minds through the power of music, has announced a stellar lineup of honorees and guests for the 5th annual Voice Awards Celebration. Held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, this year’s star-studded event moves to the famed Ray Dolby Ballroom in the heart Hollywood. NCIS star Pauley Perrette and television personality Ross Mathews will host the festivities, with special appearances by Paula Abdul, Alex Newell, Transparent’s Amy Landecker and many others. Each year GMCLA hosts the Voice Awards gala and silent auction to honor members of the community who advance the world, refute silence, lend a voice to the oppressed, exhibit leadership and give hope to those living under the weight of silence. The high- profile charity event raises vital funds for GMCLA’s programmatic work that encourages diversity and acceptance through the performing arts in schools across the United States. GMCLA’s 2016 Voice Award honorees include: Visionary Voice Award—Presented to Focus Features, the forward-thinking film distribution company that has dedicated itself to telling diverse and sometimes- controversial stories on the big screen. the human experience. Earlier this year Focus Features established the Lili Elbe Fellowship for trans filmmakers to ensure equal opportunities in the entertainment industry as well as providing trans artists a way to tell their stories in an authentic manner. In 2016, Focus Features partnered with trans filmmakers on the docu-series “We’ve Been Around,” ABBE which chronicles the LAND lives of trans pioneers throughout history that shaped the trans movement. Its progressive film slate continued with 2016’s Race, based on the incredible story of Jesse Owens, the greatest track and field athlete in history who overcame racial adversity during the 1936 Olympics. Good Neighbor Voice Award—Presented to Abbe Land, executive director and CEO of The Trevor Project, a nationally recognized nonprofit providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth. Before joining The Trevor Project, Land served as co-CEO of The Saban Free Clinic in Los Angeles, where she led the exponential growth of the clinic as well as the opening of two new clinic locations. Not only is Land a respected health care professional and activist, she also has extensive public policy knowledge. She currently serves as an elected Councilmember of the City of West Hollywood and has been West Hollywood mayor five times. Outspoken Voice Award—Presented to Subhi Nahas by special guest Paula Abdul, Nahas is a Syrian refugee who made history last year by addressing the United Nations Security Council during the first-ever hearing on LGBT refugees. Nahas escaped Syria three years ago and arrived in the United States as a refugee only a few months ago. Since his arrival to the U.S., Nahas has become a strong advocate for human rights and brought national attention to the Syrian LGBT refugee crisis. Despite numerous death threats from the oppressive leadership in Syria, Nahas continues to advocate for the human rights of LGBT Syrians and refugees. n To purchase tickets, please visit: http://voiceawards.gmcla.org/.

PARTY N’ PLAY SOBER
With White Party season in mind—we asked a few local folks in recovery what they think about attending circuit parties clean and sober. SPECIAL OCCASIONS “I think sober guys going to events like the White Party is fine. If you have a love for the music and you go with a community of friends, it can be a lot of fun. I think you can overdo it, but on special occasions is fine. You can meet people from all around the world and the men are extraordinarily beautiful. I think it’s cool. That’s been my experience. T-Dance is the party I would go to if I could MICHAEL go this year. People are SHAHIN way more coherent at a day party. I always go with sober people. At least one, but the more people I go with, the merrier. It’s a lot of fun.” —Michael Shahin, sober since March, 2013.
STAY CONNECTED “I am sober, but I am not dead. I don’t cheat myself out of an experience. As long I am spiritually fit I can go anywhere if I am clear about what my intentions are for going. My goal in recovery has been to stay connected with a power greater than myself—I call it “God”—so that if ASHLEE MARIE and when the craving PRESTON comes knocking, I’m granted the strength to not answer the door.” —Ashlee Marie Preston, sober since March, 2012.
4 6 T H E F I GH T | www.thefightmag.com
SUPPORT SYSTEM “I think it’s possible to attend these events sober, especially if you go with a good support system of sober guys. I’m in my early stages of recovery, so personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea for me at the moment. It’s way too triggering. I love music. I just don’t know if I would want to put myself in that sort of scene, but to each his own, and if you can handle it - then go. Have fun. More power to you.” —Jacob Hall, sober since November, 2015.
GABRIEL BROWNE
JACOB HALL
STRONG ENOUGH
“I would be okay with going to circuit parties. I feel strong enough in my sobriety to attend these events, but for people who don’t have that strength, I don’t know. There is an underworld to that scene and it is very powerful. I started out by doing cocaine at the clubs, but once I did meth, I didn’t come down until I had a heart attack at a bathhouse. So in the context of going to circuit parties, I’d be fine. Drugs are not a choice for me today. I would surely die.” —Gabriel Browne, sober since April, 2014
SURROUND YOURSELF
ANIL PATEL
“We—as people in recovery—did not get sober to not have fun. We can do anything. Just because there’s a big, great party going on, does not mean we have to associate drugs and alcohol with it. I strongly believe that maybe someone newly sober, it’s not such a great idea to jump into that, but if you surround yourself with your sober posse, you can do anything. There is amazing music and talent and amazing performances and you can appreciate the décor and all the work that goes into it when you’re sober. People can definitely go there sober, have an amazing time and then go home. And go to bed.” —Anil Patel, sober since January, 2006.

2. The Gameplay Not only do you have a ass-kicking story, but you also have the best cover and shoot gameplay mechanics to boot. Expect some hours to burn quick while playing with friends to get king of hill, capture the flag, and other various modes. Also remember the set pieces and action scenarios will be crazier, more suspenseful, and just downright badass.. Remember the plane crashing in the third title? Perhaps the building falling down while you are inside trying to escape in Among Thieves? Chyeah..better grab some popcorn because shit is about to get real.
UNCHARTED TERRITORY
With it’s sleek and slick cover and shoot system, adventure gameplay, deep story, AARON and amazing graphics Uncharted is JONES finally releasing on the PS4 in May. 3. The Spectacle BY JO SEPH A RELLA N O
O
n November 16th, 2007 Naughty Dog released a game that became a sleeper hit among Playstation fans all across the world. It was a launch title for the PS3 and it received critical praise as well as a number of cult followings for it’s gameplay, story, and characters. The game was called Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Within the next couple of years Naughty Dog challenged themselves tenfold by providing some of the best video game acting and voice overs, but also, their graphical genius. The most articulated ideas conveyed in a Lethal Weapon meets Indiana Jones classic, Uncharted was becoming a series that was a force of nature to be reckoned with. The story follows Nathan Drake and company on his missions to receive and collect ancient artifacts or discover hidden temples and cities while keeping the powers they possess from falling into the wrong hands. With it’s sleek and slick cover and shoot system, adventure gameplay, deep story, and amazing graphics Uncharted is finally releasing on the PS4 in May and here are 4 reasons why you should preorder this stellar title from “WORLD 8.”
1. The Story Nathan drake has fallen on hard times MANY times. But this entry sees the hero battling evil baddies for the sake of a last treasure hunt with his long lost brother. Nathan is seen living the simple life with Elena and Sully at his side. So it begs to question..How far can you go for your family after hanging up the mantle. Nathan is about to see a far cruel world among thieves and you are at the center of it all. Because of the LAST OF US naughty dog has gotten critically acclaimed nods for their engrossing stories and characters…And to think, it all started with Nathan..gotta love him… 4 8 T H E F I GH T | www.thefightmag.com 4 8 T H E F I GH T | www.thefightmag.com
Naughty Dog is good at what they do. No Scratch that…They are downright AMAZING. Their attention to detail can be seen all the way back to the first entry. On the PS3 Uncharted played and looked exceptional while guiding players through their dedicated levels and world with realistic sand, water, and snow. Uncharted on the PS4? Sign me up, already the game is looking to be a contender for game of the year, but also the attention to the car chases, explosions, cities, mud…yes..I said MUD. The physics and lighting are sure to blow fans away again for years to come.
4. The Acting Yeah..I said it. The Acting. Naughty Dog takes great strides to deliver a dramatic story filled with emotions, characters, and brilliant writing. Their actors they don’t take for granted. Nolan North for example has been the bread and butter of the series. His voice for Nathan Drake is iconic and any fan you ask will know him by name. The Last of Us had some of the best writing and acting seen in a game by far and I am sure you are going to get some oscar winning performances with this bad boy. So…bring the tissues.

Rob says gay story lines, even on cartoons, are important. “Sometimes TV can have a real impact on people’s thinking,” he says, adding with a laugh, “and I certainly hope it will have an impact on my son’s dating life—not that he needs help.” Of course, it’s not really a big shock about Smithers, who was once depicted wearing a tank top and rainbowstriped short-shorts as he roller-bladed out of the Stonewall Bakery in Springfield’s gay district. But the elder LaZebnik, 53, says

hen Waylon Smithers Jr. finally officially came out this month, after 27 years in the closet on “The Simpsons,” he wasn’t the only one celebrating, reports Eric Hegedus at The New York Post. Longtime show writer Rob LaZebnik told The Post he penned the episode in support of his own 21-year-old son, Johnny, who is gay. “I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?’ ” said LaZebnik. Not that the younger LaZebnik needed confirmation from an animated pop-culture icon, The Post reports. “The revelation that my father loves me is not much of a revelation, thankfully. He’s unbelievably accepting,” says Johnny, a senior psychology major and film minor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. “We’re as close as a straight dad and a gay son could be.” Rob LaZebnik told The Post that he had the idea for Smithers coming out two or three years before he pitched it. He even showed an early version of the script to his son, who gave feedback and a thumbs-up. “I was really happy that someone who has experience with a gay person in their immediate family was writing the script,” says Johnny. In fact, Rob often seeks out his son’s input, sometimes to comical effect. “He once sent me an e-mail, and the header was just ‘How does Grindr work?’ ” Johnny says of a time his father needed background on the gay-hookup app. “I screenshotted and Instagrammed it and sent it to all my gay friends because it made me laugh so much.” In the episode, Smithers—voiced by Harry Shearer—realizes his longtime longing for his boss, Mr. Burns, will never be mutual. That leads Homer Simpson to help Smithers look for better love interests.

“SOMETIMES TV CAN HAVE A REAL IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S THINKING… AND I CERTAINLY HOPE IT WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON MY SON’S DATING LIFE—NOT THAT HE NEEDS HELP.” Smithers was ready for a low-key reveal. “We didn’t really want to have that big moment of ‘I’m out,’ you know?” he says. “Instead, just have it be a big embrace— like everyone knows it.” That’s not far off from Johnny’s own coming-out to his father and mother, Claire, in high school. “I was the gayest little kid, and my parents knew that,’” Johnny told The Post. “I told them I was interested in a boy. My parents were, like, ‘Yeah, we know.’ ” Now his father even helps him with dating’s ups and downs. “My favorite thing that I’ve never heard any other dad do is, whenever I have a breakup, he’ll call me and just make sure I’m OK,” Johnny says.

GETTING CLOSER
Is a cure for HIV and AIDS just a few years away? Researchers at Temple University hope so. BY VICTO R MELA MED
S
cientists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Pennsylvania say clinical trials for a technique that wipes away the HIV virus from cells’ DNA could begin within three years. The technique is called CRISPR/Cas9, and it uses a protein that searches for HIV DNA in immune cells. Once it finds the DNA, the protein releases an enzyme that removes the HIV’s genetic sequence. A CRISPR researcher from Temple’s school of medicine told The Telegraph that once treated, immune cells are protected from being reinfected with HIV, and there have been no harmful effects. He also said recent success in the lab should mean his team will be able to eliminate the virus in actual human cases. “The findings are important on multiple levels,” researchers said. “They demonstrate the effectiveness of our gene editing system in eliminating HIV from the DNA of CD4 T-cells and, by introducing mutations into the viral genome, permanently inactivating its replication. Further, they show that the system can protect cells from reinfection and that the technology is safe for the cells, with no toxic effects.” “These experiments had not been performed previously to this extent,” he added. “But the questions they address are critical, and the results allow us to move ahead with this technology.” Current treatments can’t cure HIV. The drugs can only try to stop the HIV virus from spreading within the body. An estimated 1.2 million people live with the HIV infection in the U.S.—150,000 of which don’t know they’re infected. n AP R I L 2016 | THE F I GH T 53

Center opened. I never used its services, because I was afraid to be seen, but I knew people who did, and I was amazed at how the Center’s health and mental health counselors compassionately handled people with experiences similar to—or much worse than—mine.

WHY I GIVE
TMZ’s Harvey Levin on why he supports the LA LGBT Center, first published in the Center’s “Vanguard Now” site at vanguardnow.org.
T
he reason I give to the Los Angeles LGBT Center is very personal and relates to a story that resonates with me today as much as it did many decades ago. When I was a teenager, I found myself in a profound internal struggle—what I perceived as a mandate to live a “straight” life, despite contrary feelings that were welling to the surface. I thought I did a pretty good job sublimating those feelings, but someone close to me had a good sense of what was really going on. That person went on with what felt like a homophobic campaign, denigrating LGBT people with epithets and snide comments—without ever confronting me directly. That was my first encounter with anyone who suspected I was gay, and it scarred me for many, many years. I tried harder than ever to lead a “straight” life. When I finally began to experiment, I felt such shame. If I went to a gay bar, I would wait—sometimes for half an hour—just to make sure cars weren’t passing by the front door for fear a driver might see me enter. When I met someone, I would often use an alias so I could easily cut ties. It actually makes no sense, but that’s what I did. Short story, I was a mess. This all happened soon after the

We’ve come a long way since then. However, tolerance is measured not by national polls but by individual families, many of which have little tolerance for those whose sexual orientation or gender identity differ from theirs. The Center has been a place of comfort for so many kids and adults who have been rejected or fear rejection by their families. The Center has been the mortar in the LGBT community, often quietly providing a lifeline for people with great value, but who have no support. During the 1980s the Center provided care and comfort to our community as AIDS ravaged thousands. The people who provided these services truly are angels, and the Center deserves profound respect and support in our community. And that is why I give. n To learn more about the Los Angeles LGBT Center visit: www.lalgbtcenter.org.
