The Finnish Film Foundation The Finnish Film Foundation supports and promotes the Finnish film industry. The Film Foundation provides support for professional film production and the exhibition and distribution of films. The Foundation is also responsible for the cultural export of Finnish film and provides support for the international promotion of films. The Finnish Film Foundation was founded in 1969 as an independent foundation operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In granting support, the Foundation is guided by the State Aid Act, the Film Promotion Act and Decree as well as the European Commission notification on state funding for film. The Foundation receives its funding from lottery and pools funds allocated for promoting film art.

LAURA BIRN Laura Eveliina Birn is a Finnish actress born in Helsinki on the 25th of April 1981. She has gained a strong reputation through a widely varied list of roles in theatre, television and film.

performed in two plays called The Bunnygirl and The Little Jesus. She finished her MA degree in 2008 and after graduating she has continued working with both theatre and film. Her latest work includes two successful Finnish feature films called Naked Harbour and Purge. Purge got selected as Finland’s entry for the Oscars 2012. Purge is a suspenseful story of two women dogged by their own shameful pasts and the dark, unspoken history that binds them. Birn´s performance as Aliide Truu received outstanding critics, and won her a nomination for best leading actress in the Golden Satellite Awards and Jussi Awards. Her performance in Naked Harbour, an episode film about multicultural suburbia in Helsinki, as an unstable girl with a drug addiction also won her a nomination for best supporting actress in Jussi Awards.

At the age of seventeen, Laura Birn spent a year in Brazil as an exchange student. In South America she found her interest for theatre and started performing with a Brazilian theatre group. After having moved back to Finland, she received leading roles in two short films. Her bigger on-screen debut took place in 2002, starring in the Finnish feature film Pigs and pearls, directed by Perttu Leppä. She was nominated for best supporting actress in the Finnish film awards, Jussi awards, for her first film role. The same year, in 2002, she started her acting studies at Helsinki Theatre Academy. Despite her studies Birn continued acting actively. She played the leading female role in four feature films; The Promise, The Christmas Story, 8 Days to Premiere and Rally on. Birn also starred in several TVseries, such as the drama mini-series Jumalan kaikki oikut, the drama series Karjalan kunnailla set in the country side of Finland, Suojelijat a drama series about security guards, the drama series Morsian and the detective series Virta.

Birn is chosen as one of Europe’s most talented young actors to be awarded at the Berlin Film Festival 2013. Birn speaks five languages, Finnish as her native language, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. She has also studied dancing and singing for many years.

As for theatre, Birn acted on stage in both Helsinki and Barcelona during her years at the Theatre Academy. Her breakthrough stage performance was in the Finnish drama play Sydänmaa at Helsinki City Theatre in 2005 to 2006. In Barcelona she

TUFFI FILMS The film production company Tuffi Films Ltd. was founded in the spring of 2010 by a producer, a director and two screenwriters. It aims at producing films of high artistic quality, both fiction and documentary. FAVEX

FAVEX, i.e. Finnish Film & Audiovisual Export, is an association that promotes and facilitates marketing and sales of Finnish audiovisual content and services, be it in the spheres of television, film or publicity. The association also gives coaching, does match making and strives for the best possible ecosystem and financing in Finland, so that the audiovisual industry and creativity can flourish. The coordination of the lobbying activities for a Finnish film incentive / rebate model is also a task that FAVEX has taken on.
