Drills of the Month

Rebounding – Coach Don Showalter, who works with USA Basketball, teaches the fundamentals of rebounding. This skill is for more than just for the taller people on a team. Everyone needs to box out!

Ball Handling – College basketball player, Alyssa Ustby, takes you through her ball handling routine. It is a terrific way to work on your handle and improve your dribbling.

Basketball Knowledge 101

Have you ever watched a basketball game on TV and wondered what the things being discussed by the announcers meant? Here are some brief definitions of hoop’s lingo you might hear:

Mental Side of Athletics

While sports create a terrific opportunity to improve your athletic skills, every now and then we want to explore the mental side of the game. Passion, humility, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness are just a few of the traits we hope to develop over the course of this season.

When discussing the greatest teams of all time, people quickly jump to the 90’s Bulls, Showtime Lakers, Russell’s Celtics, or even the presentday Warriors. All those teams deserve their recognition. However, I rarely hear the Spurs mentioned in these discussions. Tim Duncan won 5 NBA Titles in a 15-year span. They often had to defeat all-time greats in route to their titles including Kobe, Shaq, LeBron, D-Wade, and countless others.

How did the Spurs create a dynasty despite lacking the glitz and glamour of other great individuals? What secrets did Coach Popovich and his staff unlock in claiming those five championship rings? Simply put, he got a group of professional basketball players to buy in to playing team basketball and not worry about stats and individual accolades. Please watch the video to learn more about their success.

Staying Focused During the Season

What does my coach expect from me? What things can I do to help my game? How can I be a better teammate? What are some tips to be ready on gameday?

If you’ve ever asked yourself any question listed above (or something like it), let us try to assist.

While the public saw Bueckers’ ‘World Tour,’ she emphasized the unseen ‘Work Tour.’ This dedication to her craft, away from the limelight, is what truly defines her as an elite athlete and impactful leader.

“The work will always show,” Bueckers asserts. “I’m a believer in that and I have confidence in that.”

This statement revealed a deep understanding of the relationship between consistent effort and commitment to the process. Bueckers acknowledges the potential for criticism if she doesn’t meet others’ expectations:

“I can already see if I don’t have a game up to other people’s standards it’s like ‘should’ve been in the gym all summer, shouldn’t have been doing this, shouldn’t have been doing that.”

Yet, she remains grounded, and secure in the knowledge of her own commitment and work ethic to the game.

Realize that true greatness is forged in the quiet moments when daily consistency meets selfdiscipline. There is no substitute for hard work and commitment to the process and the craft. This relentless dedication is what separates the greats from the rest.
