Start of the FXW Season

JAGUARS ARE OFF AND RUNNING! Shooting Tips

The start of the FXW Basketball season has been productive. Our coaching staff is instrumental in having practices that run with great instruction and motivation. A huge thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and countless others who help transport our athletes from site to site. Our FXW support team continues to provide door security, a clean gym, and educational resources to our athletes. The adage ‘it takes a village’ can be seen in our basketball community.

Game and roster breakdowns have quickly become the focal point for many of our athletes, coaches, and parents. While we strive for success on the court, please remember some key factors about being a part of a team and program. The opportunity to compete, create lasting friendships, and improve teambuilding skills are a few things our FXW staff works to ensure each athlete takes away from the season. Knowing there will be moments to grow as people, not just as players, is a key to development.

As we watch our athletes continue to give their best, I hope everyone keeps a great perspective of what a gift it is to do something we care about regardless of the final score.

Basketball Terms 101

Have you ever watched a basketball game on TV and wondered what the things being discussed by the announcers meant? Here are some brief definitions of hoops lingo you might hear:

Motion Offense: Offense centered around player and ball movement.

Set Play: Offensive possession with specific spots and movements designed for a direct result.

BLOB: Dead ball set play that starts under the basket. ‘Baseline out of bounds.’

SLOB: Dead ball set play that starts on the side. ‘Sideline out of bounds.’

Pick and Roll/Pop: Offensive action setting a ball screen. The screener goes to the basket(roll) or cuts out(pop).

Paint Touches: Offensive term for attempting to get the basketball inside the lane Can be done by dribbling, passing, or cutting.

Spacing: Concept to not crowd players and keep them separated for proper passes and driving angles.

Mental Side of Athletics

While sports create a terrific opportunity to improve your athletic skills, every now and then we want to explore the mental side of the game. Passion, humility, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness are just a few of the traits we hope to develop over the course of this season.

Dawn Staley’s resume is impressive to say the least. As a player, she won 3 Olympic Gold Medals, 2 NCAA National Player of the Year Awards, and was a named a WNBA All-Star 6 times. Now on the sidelines, Coach Staley has quickly become the best coach in college basketball. 3 NCAA Titles, 6 Final Fours, and 4 National Coach of the Year Awards highlight just some of her numerous accomplishments.

In the video link to the right, Coach Staley describes the most important things to her in basketball. It is obvious to see her passion for leadership listening to her discuss team building, communication, and self-reflection. Coach Staley gives details about how athletes can be better prepared for failure, resolving conflict, and treating others. There is much to gain from hearing her message.
