Venturing into the Franchising Frontier: Exploring Opportunities in Australia and New Zealand

Financial management doesn’t happen by accident. It requires organization and systemization… it doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some tools to get organized.

1. Accounting software

With cloud systems linked to bank accounts, it’s easy to keep track of finance.

You need to keep track of transactions for the tax office, lenders, but importantly yourself.. A well set up system will provide information ensuring:

- You pay everyone correctly: staff, suppliers, business owners, tax office etc.

- You know where you’re making and losing money e.g. which products/services are most/least profitable, where you’re going over/under budget on expenses, when costs are rising and margins being squeezed and it’s time to review pricing.

- Customers pay on timereporting who owes what for how long. Then send statements/ reminders to slow payers.

2. Budget

The most important tool in business. Starting a business without a budget is flying blind!

A budget is your financial roadmap that keeps you on track monthly. It sets out how much you plan to sell, what sales will cost and what will be your expenses and profit monthly. Once developed, a budget needs to be entered into your accounting

system, so that you can report monthly on actual versus budget. Doing this monthly, you see where things are on/off track and fix them quickly, avoiding further losses.

3. Cashflow Forecast

Achieving sales and profit targets is great, however if you don’t handle the cash, business could fail due to lack of cash.

A cashflow forecast sets out when you expect the cash to come in and go out of your business. By forecasting, you’re pre-armed with knowledge that you can act upon. For example if things don’t go according to plan and cash looks tight for the future you can ramp up sales, inject cash from loans, shareholders, sale of assets, speed up customer payments, speed up finishing jobs so they can be invoiced, sell off slow moving or obsolete stock. On the outgoings you can reduce expenses, slow up supplier payments, arrange to pay off tax debts, delay shareholder payments etc.

4.Monthly Financial Management Checklist

The easiest way to ensure financial management stays on track is to follow a checklist. Including Monthly Reports: Profit and Loss Report, Balance Sheet, Cashflow Forecast, Outstanding Customers, Outstanding Suppliers, Job Management, Stock Management, Detailed Sales Report by customer, product, division etc. Also include:

- Reconciliation/payment of suppliers, taxes, superannuation etc.

- Reconciliation/follow up customer amounts owed

- Reconciliation of bank accounts, credit cards etc.

- Monthly accounting entries for non cash transactions such as depreciation of assets and amortization of large amounts, such as yearly insurance (break it down monthly)

- Tax returns such as GST/VAT and staff payroll taxes

- Reconciliation of Work in Progress and Stock

- Reconciliation of intercompany loans/accounts and suspense accounts

- Foreign Exchange – accounting for losses/gains

5.A Spreadsheet System

A spreadsheet is a great tool for calculating things like:

- Pricing – gather up all your direct costs then add on a margin to calculate price. Conversely if you need to adhere to a price deduct a margin and work out how much is available for the cost of the item.

- Markup – once cost is known, add a markup to achieve desired margin.

- Breakeven – The sales you need to make to cover running expenses after direct costs of the product/service.

- Anything you want to know to ensure you’re on the right track.

6.A Logical Brain!

Businesses run on ‘gut feel’ can succeed, however those run with

logical thought processes are more likely to prosper. Selling things you love is great, but if you’re not charging the right price and running things efficiently and cost effectively you will struggle to make profit for your efforts. It’s easy to use a ‘thumb suck’ to decide on a price or match competitors. If you aren’t sure of your ‘true cost’ you could be not charging enough and go out of business due to lack of profit. Taking time to do analysis before you get started can save headaches down the track. It seems an unnecessary step when you want to get on with selling and making things, but it will save money if you pause to ensure you’re on the right track at the beginning.

My experience with dogs, dog ownership, and the humanization of pets parallels the growth of the pet industry. Let me explain, as a kid in the 70’s in rural Coachella Valley our German Shepherds were outside dogs. My wife and I got our first dog, an Australian Shepherd in the mid-90’s when my middle daughter was around two. Beethoven needed to run and be outside during the day but slept inside our LA home. Fast forward to 2011 when my

youngest daughter wanted a dog, and we rescued Cori. Our lovable 18 lb. mixed breed is a member of our family.

Pet humanization, known scientifically as anthropomorphism, is becoming a common phrase within the pet industry because more and more pet owners are providing their pets with human-like products or experiences. Over 85 million U.S. families now own a pet, and our pet owners are spending more every year. The number of U.S. households

has increased 2% annually since 2011. But consumer spending on their pets has increased 7% annually in the same time period. Thompson Reuters reported that Pet Care spending grew during the last two recessions: 29% during the 2001 recession and 17% during the 2008-09 recession. In 2022

Americans spent $136,8 Billion on their pets which was up from $123,6 Billion in 2021. Humanizing pets has created

Darren Impson: A Second-Generation Success Story

There is a long-held statistic that says 70 percent of familyowned businesses don’t survive the second generation. If so, 46-year-old Darren Impson would be a strong candidate for valedictorian of the 30 percent that do.

Having worked as a securities lending trader in Manhattan, Impson and his wife, Kelly, made the decision in 2003 to leave the frenzy of New York City to join his father, Merle, who had purchased a Paul Davis Restoration franchise in Tampa four years earlier after retiring as an executive in the paper industry.

Impson began working as an estimating associate for his father’s business, but only a year later he was named “Rookie of the Year” for the entire Paul Davis network after their franchise enjoyed record sales for the franchisor recognized as one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry. Impson also became a partner in his father’s company and in 2010 he bought his father’s franchise outright before adding another neighboring franchise in 2012, allowing him to service all of Hillsborough County.

Fast-forward and it’s been 24 years since Impson became

an owner of Paul Davis Restoration of Tampa and the growth of the company has been meteoric. The company has become one of the largest in the Paul Davis network of more than 300 franchises, boasts $20 million in annual revenue, operates out of a 30,000 square-foot office/ warehouse space in Tampa, has over employees and a fleet of more than 25 branded vehicles to serve its customers and clients. Impson is looking to add 20,000 square feet of warehouse space and he also owns another Paul Davis franchise with a partner that serves Pasco and Hernando counties.

Impson is a secondgeneration success

story as a disaster recovery contractor, restoring homes and buildings damaged by flood, fire, lightning and more. A full-service, residential and commercial emergency cleanup and restoration company for disasters of all sizes, Impson and his team help put families and businesses back together when disaster strikes.

However, nothing could have prepared Impson and his team when they were at ground zero when Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds, making it one of the strongest storms to ever hit the U.S. mainland. For Impson, at least there was strength in numbers, as Paul Davis was thrust headfirst into one of the largest

disaster recovery operations the nation has ever seen.

“One of the benefits of being in a franchise network is the power of seeing all of the offices coming together in a hurricane of any large disaster that involves several counties or even states,”

Impson said. “There were more than 39 offices that responded from all over the country to mobilize and manage the hurricane claims. We oversaw more than 3,000 individual claims, collectively.”

Impson’s teams handled everything beginning with the initial emergency work, such as the drying out, boarding up, cleaning up and remediation of structures. They also oversaw their customer’s contents and whether they needed to be moved to Paul Davis’s storage facility. “We can get their precious contents secured so that we can do the demolition, and of course, the reconstruction of their property,” said Impson, who added that his office assisted an entire neighborhood that was affected by storm-surge flooding. “That is the crux of what we do on a daily basis and especially during a hurricane.”

Impson has come a long way since coming to Florida after spending five years working in the financial industry in New York City fresh out of college.

Impson said he used his background in finance as a

steppingstone to first investing in and later purchasing the Paul Davis franchise from his father. “It helped me to understand the importance of financial acumen,” Impson said. “Our success over the years is due to finding “A” players who were attracted to our culture and values.”

• Locate the nearest shelter and different routes to get there from your home.

• If you have pets, pre-identify shelters, pet-friendly hotels, or out-of-town friends or relatives where you can take your pets in case of evacuation.

• Gather Emergency Supplies: canned food and bottled water.

• Emergency medicine supply.

• Important documents to have ready (medical records, wills, passports, identification).

• Trim weak branches and • that could fall on your house.

Chris and Andrea Hansen: Floor Coverings International

They’re both known to sparkle, just in different ways. At least that’s one inference to be made when Andrea Hansen says she is “literally trading diamonds and jewelry for flooring” since she and her husband, Chris, launched Floor Coverings International of Seattle - Eastside North in March.

Andrea, 53, was a business strategist and consultant in the diamond and jewelry industries for more than 30 years, often making multiple trips to Europe and Asia each year as well as bi-weekly trips to New York. Chris was a television produc-

The Pet Care Industry: A Booming Market

As a new pet owner, I am quickly understanding first hand just how powerful the nondiscretionary side of the petcare industry truly is. There is nothing I wouldn't do for my furbaby. And I’m certain every pet owner in the country feels exactly the same way, after all, they are part of the family. I hadn't had a dog in almost 10 years, not because I didn't want to, it just really wasn't the right time. But at the start of 2024, I was fortunate enough to transition from full time merchant marine to full time landlubber, a term most commonly used by merchant sailors during WWII (see graph below). 2024 was a time for new beginnings, and I set out to find my first ever dog, that is, as a “doggy dad”. I quickly found a mini poodle from the adoption clinic and took a leap of faith - I paid a whole $2 for this adorable bundle of cuddles - and the next thing I knew, there was a new line item on my monthly budget labeled “Moose”.

• Show at least 50% ownership of the enterprise or possession through a managerial position

• Not be in a marginal enterprise.

So that would include a home service franchise, but probably not an MLM selling essential oils?

Tell me the exciting news for a certain population with a huge number looking to immigrate to the US.

Portugal was recently added to the list of participating countries! Portugal trails behind other European countries in its financial expressiveness, but the real opportunity comes from the impressive number of new Portuguese citizens - those who became citizens either through descendancy, or who became naturalized citizens. There are an estimated one million Brazilians who have become Portuguese citizens in the past decade.

That sounds great for the many Brazilians I have worked with who unfortunately could not apply for an E-2.

RENATA - My law practice has already received a large number of inquiries from Brazilian Citizens, naturalized Portuguese, who want to pursue an E-2 visa. These investors struggle to find the right investment to pursue in a new country, and franchises could solve that dilemma in a shorter period of time. Even though there is growing demand for franchise units among

foreign investors, many franchises are simply unaware of the opportunities and lack the legal and business knowledge to globally expand their offerings to include these prospective investors.

In the 1950s, the portrayal of pets in popular culture was vastly different from today. For instance, in Charles Schultz's comic strip Peanuts, Snoopy, the pet beagle of lead character Charlie Brown, was depicted as living in a dog house, rarely seen indoors, and being fed bowl after bowl of unappetizing slop. If Snoopy were around today, he'd more likely sleep in Charlie Brown's bed and dine on organic, cage-free duck stew served with an herbal supplement to calm his nerves and anxieties.

As we know it, the pet industry is often associated with the image of affluent individuals walking their prized dogs in exclusive neighborhoods. However, this romantic picture is marred by the dark reality of animal cruelty, such as the infamous case of Michael Vick's dogfighting scandal. As a result, a complex dichotomy exists within the pet-loving community, where the love and affection for animals are juxtaposed with the harsh truth of their mistreatment. The societal mistreatment of pets/animals must be countered, as pets held significant cultural and symbolic value in ancient

Egyptian society. For instance, cats were highly revered in ancient Egypt and were considered sacred animals associated with the goddess Bastet (also spelled Bast). They were symbols of protection, fertility, and domestic bliss. Killing a cat, even accidentally, was a serious offense punishable by death. Cats were often kept as pets and believed to bring their owners good luck.

Also, dogs were valued in ancient Egypt, although not as much as cats. They were often depicted in art and were associated with protection, loyalty, and hunting. Some breeds, such as the Pharaoh Hound, have ancient Egyptian origins and were likely kept as companions and hunting aids.
