n a hot summer day in 1954, a brash, charming Multimixer salesman from Chicago named Ray Kroc stood in the parking lot of a small, oddly shaped fast food joint in dusty, suburban San Bernardino, CA. He watched in awe as a noonday crowd of over 100 patrons ordered hamburgers, fries, and most importantly, milkshakes for insanely low prices. The food was served with lightning speed, and the customers, many of them working class families, gushed about the quality of their meals. He had made the trek out there because in a time when most restaurants were buying 1 of Kroc’s mixers, the McDonald brothers were buying 8 for a location that was a tiny footprint. The rest is history. McDonald’s today is a global player and is the largest restaurant regarding revenues and serves an average of 69 million customers every single day in more than 100 countries around the world. It had a total of about 40,000 outlets. Employing over 1.7 million workers it is a name known by almost every man, woman and child in the US and in most other countries. Such is the power of an emerging brand and time. Franchising has bestowed amazing growth opportunities for entrepreneurs who see the future and gives America the ability to export intellectual
capital in a way the world has never seen. In this issue we celebrate the entrepreneurs, the visionaries and the do-ers who get in the ring to create the next global success stories. This is the story of America. The optimism that has changed the world and made generations of people live better lives. Franchising has played a major role in this lift. There are no overnight success stories. Each of the entrepreneurs you will read about in this issue have spent sleepless nights, long days and marched forward in the face of adversity. Many are the product of generations of entrepreneurs who have continued in industry until that spark of brilliance illuminates them and they see the future that they can bring to the world. The ability for an early adapter to work directly with the founder is a story that few will tell. There is risk in being too early to the game but there is no outsized reward without risk. Doing your homework and using frameworks to evaluate opportunities is now, more than ever, done on the internet and in talking with experts who are readily available. To emerge simply means “becoming apparent or prominent.” In the world of business, emerging means nothing more than getting recognized, gaining popularity, or trending. Branding is becoming an identifying mark that companies use to distinguish their product or services from others. This means being new and small. Emerging brands have gained recognition by having value and an advantage over their competitors with the potential of becoming a strong and stable brand. WHAT IS CONSIDERED AN EMERGING BRAND? Does an emerging brand need an emerging market? Not really, what it needs is an innovative service or product and an opportunity to market. Take a look at the television when it came out. Intended for entertainment and it did entertain, however, TV networks saw the potential to earn more through advertisement. Soon, networks became saturated with commercials. Cable providers emerged offering services of channels dedicated to actual

contents such as series, movies, news which basically cater to what people wanted and needed. Were television and network an emerging market? No, rather changed and caters to viewer’s needs. Nowadays, cable TV is staring at the eye of extinction with innovations of smart TV. All you need is an internet connection and you can have the freedom of selecting your preferred shows, series, video content through a smart TV. Yes, no more waiting for the airing schedule. This time it is an innovation, nonetheless, with the right marketing and advertising, service or product will gain massive recognition making it sell like hotcakes, but what else does it need to be a successful emerging brand? Businesses need to look for new developments that will make new opportunities to sell. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic had caused drastic changes and shifts in demands across business industries. Food industry profit shifted from dine-in to take-out and deliveries. Consumers had increased their spending through online shopping. Becoming popular in a short amount of time, in other words, trending. It would be
pointless to reach the quota of 100,000 sales in 10 years’ time. If the brand can gain popularity in a short amount of time, it has a better chance to sell more, leading to a quicker return of investment, and better customer retention resulting in a strong and stable franchise. Some people might believe that an established franchise with brand recognition is a less risky investment and better suited for success. However, this doesn’t always hold. Consider the U.S. electronics company, RadioShack, which had 4,000 company-owned and franchise units in 2014 and now has only 400. RadioShack failed to maintain relevance as technology changed and companies like Amazon.com continue to be more popular. Conversely, emerging franchises are catching business owners’ attention for their growth potential, investment value, and franchisee satisfaction. These growing franchise brands may not be a household name (yet), but they have many advantages and business opportunities for entrepreneurs to carve a path of success. But the reality is, you don’t have to invest in a big franchise company to be successful as a franchise owner. In fact, most franchises available in the United States today are companies with under 100 locations (in many cases, as few as 10, 15, or 20 sites). Over 300 new concepts hit the market each year, and 82% of franchise brands within the market have less than 100 units.
You’ll be surprised at just how many brands you can franchise. In the 90’s the noticeable ones are from the food industry such as McDonald’s, KFC, Dunkin’ to name a few. Nowadays, the changes and shifts in the market allowed the emergence of new brands from different industries like cleaning, automotive, senior care, education, and many more. Take a look at some of them for 2021. Mr. Handyman’s service for home improvement and maintenance. The business started in 2000 and started franchising the same year. Currently has almost 300 stores in the US. Mr. Appliance started in 1996 and soon began franchising that lead to the growth of more than 300 stores across the US. Mathnasium Learning Centers cater to children’s learning and mastery of math. Mathnasium was founded in 2002 and started franchising the following year, and now has over a thousand franchise
units in the US. Visiting Angels which provides senior home care Angels now have 640 units across US/Canada since the start in 1992. KEY THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING ONE? How mainstream is it? Word of mouth is a strong strategy for marketing. It is closely associated with popularity. Have you seen a long queue for a tea or coffee shop? It makes you wonder and leads to two things, either popularity or really good product and in some cases both. Now that almost everyone has access to social media and can post instantly, a brand can easily have all kind of exposure that leads to consumers' curiosity and soon generates more sales. How accessible is it to customers? After gaining exposure and popularity, consumers would want the ease of purchasing the product or service. I remember a decade and a half ago; every restaurant would have a fleet

of motorcycles or cars to deliver the food. Ordering is limited by calling the restaurant itself. The emergence of Uber and the likes allows restaurants to cater to more customers since they have alternative options to place the order, either through a phone call, restaurant website, and now the application of delivery partners. They can generate more income through partners' promotions and additional options to pay not just cash but through credit systems. An emerging brand needs to utilize options for customer accessibility, establish tie-ups that will steadily generate exposure, promotion, and income. How long can it retain the hype? I mentioned how important a brand is to quickly generate popularity as it will create hype. Yes, after the peak this will subside but how soon and how low? Things differ

for every business but what is important is taking action and acknowledging customer feedback and implementation of such. Customers that can see and feel they are valued are more likely to return on a regular basis. Taking action to keep high retention will minimize the dive after the hype translating to better income. How good is the image of the brand? Gaining popularity for a brand is one thing, the market and consumer dictate what kind of image would stick with the brand, this is good. However, would it be better if the company itself would dictate what kind of image customers should have towards their branding? A business that has set a brand and is able to control the image that stayed with customers is more likely a solid investment as it tells us how close they are to their

goal, operation, production, customer care, and relations all add up to a better investment being able to maintain what they have gained as an emerging brand. Ultimately, with the guidance of a franchise consultant, purchasing an established or emerging brand is a great way of securing your future wealth. Franchisors have already laid out the concept and investors only need to focus on operating and securing the location and profit. What Is An Emerging Franchise and Why Invest In It?

by Greg Mohr, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company ne of my candidates, Jerome, came to me looking to get into a franchise. He worked in the department of human services and wanted to step away from that and get into his own business. He was particularly interested in the senior care field. Since it was his first time going into business for himself, he wanted to make sure he got into a franchise that he could believe in and that was going to go out of their way to help him succeed and give him lots of personal support. He wanted to look at franchises that had dozens or hundreds of franchisees to call upon to

make sure the franchise did what it said it would. I had Jerome looking at franchises with hundreds of units and an one emerging brand. Investing in any franchise is a risk. You’re counting on franchisors for guidance; other franchisees for support and you’re investing quite a bit of money to build your business. Now add the risk factor of investing in an emerging franchise, a franchise with only a few franchisees. Does it add risk? Maybe, but there are far more benefits of investing in an emerging franchise that the little added risk. Your voice is not only heard by the franchisors, but it’s also helping to make positive

changes for future franchisees. Take an extremely large franchise such as, Taco Bell or Hilton. Can you imagine a franchisee picking up the phone to call the President of the company to share an idea they had on how to make franchisees daily operations more efficient or producing new product? In an emerging franchise, you are able to have a close relationship with the corporate team or person, behind the concept and your ideas will be taken seriously. They believe in you as much as you believe in them. Here are few more reasons to join an emerging franchise.
First, how do we define an emerging franchise? They may only have a few corporate locations or one corporate location and or a few franchisees. They have not reached the 50 plus locations to make themselves self-sustaining as a franchise system yet. Why would you want to be the one to take the risk? The first few franchisees that are part of the franchise system will ultimately make or break the franchise. These will be the people the franchise will have for their validators for future franchisees. Franchises must make sure these franchisees are extremely successful. Quite often the first few franchisees may be friends, family, or former customers of the franchise. As a new franchisee to an emerging franchise, you will have the opportunity to help develop the franchise system. This is a very exciting part. You will be educating consumers and being the brand image. You will be part of something new and exciting. Would you prefer something new and exciting or to be part of a large tried and true system? It comes down to what gets you up in the morning. The expansion opportunity is much greater with an emerging brand. You will have the opportunity to pick and choose your territory, the area for which no other franchisee can operate. For emerging brands, you also have more of an opportunity to negotiate territory size. When I have my people looking into franchises, I always stress the importance
of calling on other franchisees to validate what the franchisor has told them. With emerging brands, you may not have the opportunity to call on other franchisees or very few to call. However, the closeness and camaraderie you have with the franchisor and other franchisees with be much greater with an emerging brand. You will have a much more close-knit team to work with. You will be working very closely with the owners who are looking to make sure their franchise is successful. Which means that you must believe in them and share their visions and goals. You are going to have the owner’s personal attention as you grow the franchise. You are going to have to believe in them. For me, matching people with emerging brands relies on matching personalities. I must get the know the owners of the emerging brands personally. I must know their dream and how they are looking to help their franchisees realize their goals together.
So, I told Jerome; I know you only wanted f ranchises with lots of f ranchisees, but I think you should give Jerod and Dustin f rom A Place At Home an hour of your time. They only have a couple of f ranchisees and a couple of corporate locations, but you had indicted you wanted a lot of personal attention. Well, as it worked out all three hit it off right away. It turns out the personal attention meant more to Jerome than having hundreds of f ranchisees to call and he invested in A Place At Home, or more specifically, he invested in Jerod and Dustin. Because, ultimately, when you invest in emerging brands that is what you are doing, investing in people you believe in. value of communication and education and that will help me in the home inspection industry as we work with realtors, homeowners and buyers,” Pam said. Craig was previously an ASE-certified transmission builder, where he developed a high aptitude for diagnosing mechanical failures. “As an auto technician, I learned to have a sharp eye for detail and thoroughness. Coming from a field that requires such a high level of continuing education, it was easy for me put in the time, effort and education required to be a home inspector,” he said. The Ericksons also have some family history in the real estate industry. They were helped in funding their new business by a small inheritance left by Craig’s/ Pam’s father who passed away earlier this year at the age of 86. He had been a real estate agent for 40 years and still dabbled in it while in retirement. There are multiple things that set us apart. The first is how easy it is to open and operate a successful Wee Chippy. They can practically work anywhere, from food halls, to malls, airports, campuses, beach towns, vacation spots, and any high-pedestrian area.
They also can be any size which we have proven by our Venice, CA location which is all of 115 square feet. They can also be as large as sit-down restaurants, even adding wine and beer. The Wee Chippy formula and philosophy are truly simple. Do one thing and do it better than anyone else. Our menu is uncomplicated. This simplicity helps our franchisees because they can train their staff quickly with our efficient processes. The Wee Chippy is also a totally green business. Unlike most restaurants where the food waste can be enormous, we have practically no food waste. All new franchisees will learn how to copy this successful formula. As an example, all the cooking oil we use is recycled to a bio-fuel company, which helps reduce costs. And most importantly what sets our franchise apart from others, is that our start-up costs are so low that it gives everyone an opportunity to afford a food franchise and to open and operate a new and exciting business in their own community.

JG:
Where do I see The Wee Chippy in the future? Well, I believe we have unlimited potential. We’ll keep growing and nurturing the brand in many different directions. I’d like see a frozen version of our fish & chips in supermarkets, along with our flavored salts and other condiments. There are also potential growth areas in food trucks and licensing. Truthfully, I don’t see any
limits on this new American company. I’m always happy to talk with anyone who wants to be a part of growing The Wee Chippy brand. I’m always open to new and exciting ideas. That’s how all successful companies grow.

When all the bills going out equals about $1500-$2000 a month, that’s not much personal training that needs to be done to cover that. We are not looking to have 30,000 members; we are going for quality clientele which is easy to find because nowadays people are looking for that attention instead of a $9.99 gym bill QUESTION: Give us some background on what you do and what services/products you offer. I am a certified personal trainer through the national Academy of sports medicine, weight loss specialist, fitness
nutritional specialist, senior fitness specialist, share care with Dr. Oz certified, performance enhancement specialist, corrective exercise specialist, add more. I started this in New Jersey 20 years ago when I turned 18 and got certified going into college. I’ve never stopped because I love it! I saw what gyms were doing that I hated and decided to open something where I felt they were all doing it wrong. Offering a private training session in a small private location is ideal for any client. I’ve trained professional athletes, Olympic athletes, and everyday people and they all don’t want to be on stage performing in front of other members, it’s a huge distraction. We are distraction free!
QUESTION: Who is the
typical customer for you? A typical customer is middleaged men / women and seniors. These are usually the groups that have money and aren’t looking to be going to a public gym where they have no idea what they’re doing. They sign up and make this a reoccurring part of their life so it’s easy for us to continually train them on the same days and hours each week. Creatures of habit, we continue the habit for them.
QUESTION: Are there
significant competitors in your market segment on the consumer or franchise side of the business? I believe we may have two competitors in our personal training space. We are different because they don’t offer what we’re giving and focusing just on personal training. At least without training in a cubicle!
