New beginnings. A New Year. New Horizons. The endless possibilities that are in front of all of us. Our January issue celebrates the emerging brands of franchising. The entrepreneurs who embody the best of America (and beyond) who’s vision and determination has the potential to change the world. The breakthroughs that have increased the quality of life over time have all started with one person seeing something that everyone else missed. From the wheel to the steam engine to the internet all of these breakthroughs started with a question “Why not?"
Focusing that same “Why not?” to the world of franchising has brought breakthroughs like
food on the go, auto services or medical care that comes to you. From saving time and money while getting your hair colored to ensuring that your home is protected during a disaster, franchise visionaries have stepped up to bring services that we know we needed but weren’t able to address for ourselves.
This is where America shines. In the creation of solutions to answer almost any need.
For years, a grim statistic has plagued the world of small business entrepreneurship: roughly 20% of small businesses fail within the first year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
But new consumer trends as well as an uptick in entrepreneurship based on recent unprecedented events may usher in a new era of support for the small business economy. Americans are supporting small shops at record rates–and if you are a franchisee that offers a needed service, you can capitalize on the 25 Trillion US economy by focusing on one simple fact “offer a better product or service to your community and you can succeed”
The after-affects of COVID-19 had an extreme impact on small businesses. While many businesses of all sizes and across all industries suffered, it’s no secret that many small businesses thrived. At first, the COVID-19 virus sparked a state of emergency that caused many shoppers to rely on online orders and same-day delivery. Many small businesses simply could not keep up or replenish inventory, while some struggled to match everyone’s preferences for rush deliveries. Brick-and-mortar stores and restaurants were forced to shutter for months.
But there’s good news for the small businesses that have survived, the efficiencies they were forced to learn are paying dividends. From the passage of the Paycheck Protection Program bill to the Independent Restaurant Coalition, many campaigns and new programs raised awareness about the plight of small business owners, encouraging consumers to proactively support small businesses. In addition, the Darwinian effect of being able to survive through crisis now
has more demand being applied to less supply. Staying power in business is the not so secret root of success.
While many fear Amazon, and rightly so as it accounts for nearly 40% of the total US e-c. These areas are where savvy entrepreneurs are focusing their efforts. With all the signs pointing to more turbulence in the market, there will be many opportunities to focus those efforts.
The Chinese word for crisis is Wei Ji 危机 Wei means crisis while Ji means opportunity. In ancient Chinese philosophy, opportunities often arise from crisis. We certainly saw that during the pandemic with the many property services business that thrived while people were stuck at home. What opportunities are out there for small business in the coming year? It is imperative for entrepreneurs to think about what is needed and what is resilient. Where will consumers look to save money, time or through necessity reach a required outcome?
Shop local. Franchises are local businesses owned by people from your community who support the little league, buy Girl Scout cookies and employ the people who live around you. With the support and systems of franchisors harnessing the power of a network of committed franchise entrepreneurs, the benefits are greater than they have ever been to be in business for yourself but not by yourself. That is the beauty of franchising.

The population of Americans 65 and up grew by more than a third between 2010 and 2020, with the total number projected to double by 2060 to 95 million people. Typically, franchises that can tap into the changing needs of this population set themselves up for a recession-proof

Trailblazing: Traci Hawkins of Beauty Bungalows

Traci grew up in the small country town of Oakdale, in Central California. There, she grew up riding and caring for horses and living the country life. This taught her discipline and responsibility. Even at a young age, Traci knew she wanted to do something big! So she set off to Southern California to make it happen in 2004. Now 37, and with several locations slated to open across four states, Traci is well on her way to making those dreams a reality.
ABOUT YOU, WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
Women have had to overcome centuries of biases to be where they are right now. The world of business has long been an industry dominated by men. Over the last several decades, we’ve seen a steady rise of women entrepreneurs. According to the latest
estimates, almost a third of all business owners are women. This is a testament that women are not only as competitive and capable as their male counterparts, but in many cases, they far exceed them.
We will be featuring the trailblazing entrepreneur Traci Hawkins, Owner and CEO of Beauty Bungalows and discuss;
I started off going to school for nursing and realized I wanted something different. I got a job for T3 Micro. I have been in the hair industry since 2004. I started going to hair shows all over the US for T3 micro selling hair tools. With meeting and being around salon professionals, I realized I had passion for the hair industry and decided to go to cosmetology school. I have been a hairstylist since I
graduated from Paul Mitchell in 2006. I worked in a salon right after graduating, learning the ins and outs of owning a salon starting with being a receptionist and assistant while having my own chair and building my clientele. In 2011, I opened my first 13 chair traditional salon, Porcelain Hair Studio. Two years later I decided to start my own hair extensions line to sell out of my salon, Porcelain Hair Extensions. In 2017, I decided to take over the building that was vacant next door to my traditional salon and open the first Beauty Bungalows location. In 2018, we expanded that location and also opened a sister company of salon suites, Porcelain Luxury Salon Suites. Now we have several locations.
HOW WAS BEAUTY BUNGALOWS FOUNDED?
Beauty Bungalows was founded in 2017. The landlord next door to my traditional salon came and asked if I would be interested in taking over his building. I checked it out and fell in love with the space. I knew this would be the home of the first Beauty Bungalows location. It was perfect for salon suites and had a beautiful patio, and in Southern California that was a huge plus. The space is in Downtown Huntington beach and is 4 blocks from the ocean.
IN WHAT WAYS DID YOUR BACKGROUND LEAD YOU TO FRANCHISING?
I come from a family with an outstanding work ethic and a lot of entrepreneurs. I went to cosmetology school knowing the outcome was going to be owning my own spot. My 18 years being in the hair industry, 16 years being a hairstylist, and 10 years of being a successful salon owner/business owner brought me to the idea of franchising. I always knew I would franchise out the Beauty Bungalows brand because I knew it was the perfect business model for it. I always love seeing people build and grow, and this business allows me to see the hairstylists grow into having their own space and now affords me the opportunity to help other franchisees build their dreams of having their own salon suites business. It's my passion seeing people grow and helping them build their businesses. So naturally franchising was the next best move for me and Beauty Bungalows.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
I have the amazing opportunity to see people's dreams come true. I get to witness beauty professionals build and design their own salons. My favorite thing is to see other individuals' artistic abilities come out when they design their salon suites. With franchising, my favorite part is helping other entrepreneurs build successful franchises and help them expand to multiple locations.
WHAT IS YOUR VISION LONG TERM?
My long term vision is to see Beauty Bungalows across the United States as well as Europe and Australia. My plan is to go global. My vision is for us to grow a community of not only franchisees but stylists who feel like they are a part of a family. I really believe in stylists feeling like they are still a part of a salon community and not just a salon suite by themselves.
DO YOU SUPPORT ANY CHARITABLE CAUSES?
I support Animal charitable causes. Animals are the greatest and I love all of them. I love to help bring them beds, food, and send money for them to help with vet costs for animals who need homes. Animals love unconditionally and just want love back. I would adopt all animals and have them all live on a big farm together if I could.
WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT IN THE COMING YEAR?
I'm excited for all the growth that we have coming in the upcoming year. We have several locations opening in California, some also in Virginia Beach, and in the Chicago and Idaho area potentially. It will be a busy year for Beauty Bungalows and we are ready and excited for our franchise family to grow.
WHO DO YOU CONSIDER FEMALE ROLE MODELS?
My female role model would be my mom. My mom has
raised 4 ambitious and successful kids. She worked as a registered nurse the whole time while raising us and teaching us to know what hard work is. She taught us what it meant to be kind to others and to stand up for what you believe in. She is the true meaning of a hard worker and an amazing mother. My mom taught me how to ride horses and this is what taught me responsibility with taking care of my horses and other animals we had. I believe everyone should grow up being responsible for caring for an animal. It really teaches you discipline and responsibility.
HOW DO YOU LOOK TO INSPIRE OTHERS?
I look to inspire other beauty professionals and entrepreneurs into showing them that anything they put the work in for and put their mind to they can do. If they want to rent a suite to own their salon, to own a franchise, to grow in life, you have to work hard. With hard work comes reward, it doesn't come by just sitting around dreaming about it... you have
to do it and make it happen. I hope that people can see how I have worked hard grinding to build what I have today and I can inspire them to learn the ways of what they need to do in order to be successful at their own business.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Do it! Take calculated risks, not just risks. Do your research and plan well. Women are very powerful and intuitive. We can do anything we put our mind and heart to doing and we do it well. Ask questions. Use your network of people you know who are successful in your life to help bounce ideas off of.

Marc Kusinski might best be described as a human Swiss Army Knife because his wideranging background and skills are comparable to the famous Swiss icon of versatility. He worked in the kitchens of some of the country’s finest restaurants, served in an infantry battalion during the Iraq War, and became a tech wiz and started his own company. It’s all part of the intrigue of the 47-year-old who recently added another title to his resume: franchise owner. Kusinski is the new owner of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Rockwall County.
Simple math quickly demonstrates that a home inspection is money well-spent when making what is typically the largest single investment most people will ever make. “That’s one piece of advice that’s hard to argue,” said Kusinski, who launched operations Dec. 1. “No one needs surprises with what they are spending to buy a home in today’s market.”
And as far as choosing home inspection as a new career, these are industry facts: The U.S. building inspector industry, measured by revenue, is

So, while Kusinski is helping potential homebuyers avoid unexpected surprises, he can calm their anxieties by regaling them with his storied past that took shape in his early teens when he began apprenticing with multiple chefs. After graduating from high school, Kusinski attended the Culinary Institute of America, where he was fortunate enough – or unfortunate enough, depending on your perspective, Kusinski adds – to be selected for an externship at Le Bec Fin, a French restaurant in Philadelphia that a 1994 Condé Nast readers’ poll
#FranchiseStarsranked as the best restaurant in the country.
“The experience was eye-opening and gave me an insight into the industry. Hell’s Kitchen [the reality cooking competition show hosted by Gordon Ramsay] had nothing on the work environment at this restaurant,” said Kusinski, who also worked at other acclaimed restaurants such as the Green Hills Inn, Tavern On the Green, and the Rainbow Room.
Kusinski eventually decided he’d had enough of the restaurant industry and joined the United States Army, where he was offered a position on the Army culinary team but turned it down to remain with his infantry battalion. “I spent two years in the Army during
Desert Storm,” he said.
After leaving the military, Kusinski was undecided about his future. But he realized he enjoyed and had an aptitude for another field: technology. The Army had trained him on battlefield GPS systems and Kusinski gained an understanding of ballistic computers and encrypted communication systems. He moved to Dallas, attended technical school, and was hired by General Electric as a technical support analyst, taking technicians’ calls and writing procedures for issues they encountered.
But Kusinski’s IT foray was just beginning, and his Swiss Army Knife skills were put to use again. During a visit to his insurance agent’s office, he realized their IT operations were
a technical mess, so Kusinski offered to help. He was hired to rebuild the office’s network in his off time, learning the more than 30 programs that were used. The task proved to be much more difficult than Kusinski ever imagined, but word of his skills spread throughout the industry, and he soon found himself supporting hundreds of offices. After consulting for several years, Kusinski was asked to become the MIS director for an insurance-related startup. He helped grow that company before leaving to start his own company –AWT Support in Rockwall, Texas – which provides storefront technological repairs and consultation services for small businesses.
“However, as time went on, I
realized I disliked technology and the ever-evolving and constant changes it represented,” Kusinski said. “However, what I did enjoy were the opportunities to sit down with architects, general contractors, and owners. I had been on hundreds of building sites throughout the years designing the technical infrastructure. What I wanted to do was work within the construction industry without the burden of the ever-changing world of technology.”

Attractive real estate market conditions favoring NEW business owners/lessee: Opportunity to negotiate attractive retail, office, warehouse or any brick & mortar space at very attractive rates/terms as landlords may be eager to replace/retain long-term tenants. Especially in the small to mid-sized retail space, but also office, or light industrial/warehouse.
Opportunities include commercial real estate acquisitions or business owners looking for lease space. We expect to see GOOD lease space available – at VERY attractive rates and terms - so owners can look to negotiate LOW rates – while still available – for long-term financial costs savings to drive bottom-line income.

Q) Tell us about The NOW’s evolution and how the business was started?
A) The NOW Massage franchise was founded on the principle that self-care is a necessity, not a luxury. My husband Jason and I co-founded The NOW with our company Post Investment Group, which focuses on three sectors; health and wellness, real estate and consumer products. We saw there was a void in the marketplace for high quality massage in an inspired setting without the time commitment and cost of a traditional spa. Success followed and we scaled from one to four boutiques in 18 months. Our franchise journey began in 2019 and in less than three years, The NOW Massage reached the monumental achievement of signing its
100th franchise agreement and opening its 30th boutique this past July.
Q) In what states are you planning to open next?
A) We have over a dozen openings planned for the remainder of 2022, including bringing The NOW to three new states: Maryland, Ohio and New Jersey. In addition to those boutiques, we are launching four more California locations, three in different parts of Chicago and Florida, and an additional two units in Colorado.
Q) Looking ahead to 2023, what are your top growth markets?
A) NOW Massage boutiques are still available in prime markets such as Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis, the Tri-State area and more. MAYOR OF DALLAS’ FRANCHISING INITIATIVE: A Powerful Initiative to Grow Minority Business Enterprises
Greetings, my name is Carlos White, and I serve as Franchise Impact Ambassador for Mayor’s Eric Johnson’s first-of-its-kind franchise initiative (“Franchise Initiative”). The primary objectives of the Franchise Initiative are to (1) highlight and continue to position Dallas as the world’s preeminent leader in franchising and (2) develop an eco-system that creates more scalable racially diverse franchisors and franchisees.
For this particular article, we will focus on the second objective of the Franchise Initiative, creating more scalable minority business enterprises or MBEs. The first question that one may ask is why is this Franchise Initiative so important to MBEs?
Well, to paraphrase Charles Dickens, ‘It is the best of times and the worst of times’ for MBEs. On the positive side, the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurs reported that over the last 10 years, MBEs accounted for more than 50% of the 2 million new businesses started in the U.S., and there are now more than 4 million MBEs in the U.S. However, on the negative side, the Minority Business Development Agency has
reported that the average gross receipts for MBEs have dropped by 16 percent, and 95% of Blackowned firms and 91% of Latino-owned firms have no employees outside of their owners according to data from the Center for Responsible Lending.
In a nutshell, we have a growing number of MBEs, yet an overwhelming number of them are micro-businesses that are not properly structured or positioned to either scale, increase the wealth for their owners, or create sustainable jobs for others. Accordingly, these facts underscore a couple of the reasons why we need Mayor Johnson’s Franchise Initiative in Dallas and throughout the U.S.
So, the next question, why is the Franchise Initiative built around franchising? Franchising is a business model that can be utilized by any business no matter the industry (including, home services, business services, entertainment, food and beverage, health and wellness, real estate, insurance, education, apparel, logistics, technology services, cannabis, etc.). Given this broad scope, the output of franchise businesses is forecasted to be over $826 billion in 2022 according to the International Franchise Association’s (“IFA”) 2022 Franchising Economic Outlook report. These numbers are expected to
increase substantially in the next 5 to 10 years. A primary driver for this growth is the increasing purchasing power of U.S. minority groups. Per the Selig Center For Economic Growth, the purchasing power of Asian Americans, Black Americans, and Hispanic Americans are $1.3 trillion, $1.6 trillion, and $1.9 trillion, respectively. It is absolutely incumbent that MBEs at a minimum are able to scale through franchising to tap and gain market share within these racially diverse markets.
Franchising is a proven and vetted business model that if properly implemented can create more sustainable MBEs. These sentiments are consistent with reporting from the IFA that highlights that franchise businesses tend to be larger than non-franchise businesses on average, Black-owned franchise firms generate 2.2 times as much in sales compared to Black-owned non-franchise businesses, and Hispanic-owned franchise businesses enjoy 1.6 times as many sales and employ 1.5 times more people per location than their non-franchise counterparts. Franchising also creates a sustainable business eco-system and multiplies the economic impact in communities by not only creating jobs, but also creating engagement opportunities for other MBEs that provide financial and accounting, real estate, construction, technology, and other related business services. As legal counsel for many MBEs, I have seen first-hand
how minority franchise companies has created multiple millionaires and 6-figure incomes for employees (including those that were previously unemployed, underemployed, or incarcerated) and service providers.
The Mayor Johnson’s Franchise Initiative, through its public-private (social and financial) relationships, educational/networking convenings, and franchisor and franchisee accelerator programs (administered and overseen by highly-credentialed, award-winning, and connected franchise professionals), will empower and equip Dallas-based MBEs and MBEs that are interested in operating in metro Dallas, Texas with a powerful educational, operational, and social capital platform to help them scale their businesses in a meaningful and sustainable way.
