NOTES

Our cover celebrates the accomplishments of the XPONENTIAL team led by founder Anthony Geisler, or “AG” as he is known throughout franchising. While many would expect this to be an editorial about the growth of his company and how they are taking over the world, for me the pandemic showed what kind of heart AG has.

ANTHONY GEISLER When the pandemic hit, we realized that with the school closings cascading across the country children who relied on schools to eat were going to be immediately and massively impacted. We entered into a partnership with Feeding America, created the “Feed A Kid” campaign and appealed to franchise brands to support us. My phone immediately rang and AG said “we want to help” and they did. XPO mobilized their locations, sent Feed A Kid links to their thousands of franchisees and encouraged them to start food drives. As a result, tons of food and countless dollars were raised. This occurred against the stressful backdrop of a CEO

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

facing an unprecedented drop in volume as customer visits were plummeting and people stopped going to gyms. The fact that his instinct was to immediately step into the breach and help others instead of turning a blind eye to the problem speaks volumes about the kind of leader he is. As the world’s largest boutique multi-brand fitness platform the effects of COVID were significant on the fitness category. The steady hand that Geisler exhibited under

these challenging conditions brought his company through the pandemic and to the NYSE for their IPO in 2021. How they adroitly continued to grow and succeed is a testament to the people of XPONENTIAL, the power of their franchise brands and the value they create for their customers every day. The COVID-19 pandemic brought this fast-moving world to a standstill. The impact of this pandemic continues to be massive, and the imposed lockdown,

resulting in the closure of business activities, public places, fitness and activity centers, and overall social life, hampered many aspects of the lives of people including routine fitness activities, which has resulted in various psychological issues and serious fitness and health concerns. Regular fitness workouts at home during the lockdown greatly helped them to overcome psychological issues and fitness concerns but the lack of interaction with other people at fitness studios weighed heavily on people’s minds. As the curator of some of the best brands across many verticals in the fitness space, Xponential Fitness has grown its portfolio to include iconic brands such as Club Pilates, CycleBar, StretchLab, Row House, AKT, YogaSix, Stride, Rumble and Pure Barre. These brands are now found across the globe as they continue to grow and invest into their franchisees. The sudden changes in people’s lifestyle included physical activities and exercise. COVID-19 home confinement resulted in a decrease in all levels of physical activities and about 28% increase in daily sitting time as well as an increase in unhealthy patterns of food consumption. Although these abrupt changes have influenced every individual, many people who were regularly following their fitness activities in gyms, or in the ground, or other places before the lockdown were also affected intensely. The experience of hampered

physical activities, restricted social communication, uncertainty, and helplessness lead to the emergence of psychological and physical health issues that were found to create psychological problems in adults and children. XPONENTIAL is up to the task of getting the world healthy again. AG and his team rolled up their sleeves and continued to work through the pandemic and beyond. Having grown up in a workingclass family in Orange County, California and always having an entrepreneurial mindset, AG spent weekends working for his mom's cleaning business and was the first in his family to attend college. His history of innovation, vision and hard work are matched with a heart that cares for the communities they serve.

Fitness Franchises: 2022 Trends to Watch by Seth Lederman, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

F

itness trends have always come and gone, but some of the changes wrought by the pandemic may turn into keepers. For some, COVID-19's impact on their access to a gym resulted in simply getting out of the exercise habit. Meanwhile, others got creative about their workouts—turning to Zoom or the great outdoors. As society continues to emerge and return to its prepandemic routines, what fitness trends from the worldwide lockdown will continue?

Many gyms are offering hybrid experiences to entice members with the choice of an in-person or online class. Regarding getting back to the gym, interest in personal training is anticipated to increase. People like the personalized attention that comes with working one-onone with a trainer. Having prescribed workouts created just for them is a great way to achieve whatever personal fitness or health goals an individual may have. Finally, a key component of getting fit and staying healthy

Jennifer Aniston to athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, the fitness practice is expected to grow from its current market value of $12.8 billion with a projected annual growth rate of 11.7% through 2025. Pilates offers participants both strength training and small class sizes that build on the desire for a personalized workout.

"I DON'T SET TRENDS. I JUST FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE AND EXPLOIT THEM." — DICK CLARK TOP FITNESS TRENDS FOR 2022 AND BEYOND People's interest in and use of live online and on-demand exercise classes appears to stay. This option is available anytime, anywhere, but it also provides a wealth of options that may not be available to some people. The flexibility alone of digitally streaming exercise classes makes them appealing to many, and, of course, many like not having to go to a gym physically.

20

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

includes strength training. More people are anticipated to want to add this type of exercise using free weights like barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, and medicine balls into their workout routines. FITNESS FRANCHISES TO WATCH — BODYBAR Pilates was developed in the early 20th century, and interest in the practice has grown in the last 20 years. Popular with a host of celebrities like

Equally enticing is this number—9 million. That's the number of Americans practicing Pilates today. If you are interested in capitalizing on that, consider a BODYBAR Pilates franchise. The fitness franchise typically offers an anticipated return on your investment in less than three years and a predicted profit margin of 30%. No previous Pilates or fitness experience is required for BODYBAR's modern take on the classic Pilates workout.

The investment for a BODYBAR franchise is between about $250,000 and $400,000, with $150,000 of liquid capital required to cover the initial startup costs. BODYBAR offers its franchisees their full support and backing every step—from the initial location search to the build-out to marketing and promoting your new franchise location.

FITNESS FRANCHISES TO WATCH — THE EXERCISE COACH Ideal for the post-pandemic workout world, The Exercise Coach focuses on creating an environment that appeals to those who want a more individualized exercise experience. The franchise offers brief, 20-minute workouts to be attended twice weekly. The Exercise Coach utilizes specialized equipment specific to their brand and is geared toward business professionals and retirees between 45 and 65. The Exercise Coach is a lowcost option with high-profit potential. The startup expenses are only about $200,000, including the necessary working capital. The locations work in any retail or office park setting and only run 800 to 1,500 square feet. These studio gyms only require two to four employees, even further minimizing operating expenses. The Exercise Coach bills its patented and exclusive exercise technology as the "World's Smartest Workout." If you have

thought of building your own fitness business, it may just be the world's most innovative way to achieve your dream.

FITNESS FRANCHISES TO WATCH — 9ROUND Combining kickboxing and circuit training, 9Round offers a fun and social workout that will continue to grow in popularity as people venture back into the post-pandemic world. The franchise is an excellent option for someone with a love of fitness. The workouts incorporate functional, interval, cardiovascular, and circuit training. A proprietary system of nine challenging workout stations, 9Round's 30-minute workouts were developed by a professional fighter. The full-body workout is professionally led by trainers, who can also provide nutritional advice and meal planning with a follow-up online. The appeal of a 9Round franchise lies in the business's fitness offering and the potential for weight loss that the workouts can offer. This franchise offering capitalizes on the fitness trend for strength training and a more personalized experience. All 9Round's equipment is explicitly branded for their workouts, and they send franchisee locations new workouts daily to keep members excited about coming in for their training. Thanks to 9Round's circuit model, locations only require 1,500 to 1,800 square feet and

an average investment of about $113,000 to $267,000. Onboarding and training support from 9Round is extensive and includes site selection, build-out, pre-sell marketing, and an immersive in-person training camp. While Covid certainly changed the landscape for fitness, the desire to get and stay healthy to ward off serious health issues has never been stronger. With the most challenging days of the pandemic behind us, there are a lot of opportunities for someone interested in pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. If your business interests lie within the fitness world, the time is now to investigate your options, as this industry is coming back strong. HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

It’s a Matter of Personalization in Staying Fit by Rich LeBrun, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

H

ealth is Wealth. As Cliché as it sounds, this is undeniably true. Staying at utmost condition gives us the liberty to work, experience and enjoy life. Good, balanced diet and physical fitness is what will help us retain our best condition. Experts have been sharing on why and how to achieve this, and it turns out that each of us has individual needs to stay healthy. There is tons of content in different social media, books, journals about fitness and it shows that capitalizing on the need to stay fit is a good business. This is where boutique fitness studios step into the picture. Their business plan of offering a unique, highly personalized experience is what set them apart. This business model has been booming even before the pandemic. Now that we are bouncing back, boutique fitness studios are predicted to be among the fastest ones to make a comeback and this trend is here to stay. A couple of decades ago the gym was the option if you want to stay fit. However, it can be overwhelming seeing a multitude of equipment and getting to know which of these is actually what you need. Boutique fitness studios

24

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

are selling specific fitness classes and experiences, and the consumer is free to buy individual sessions and class packs giving them the flexibility in turn of expenses and using only what they need. Compared to traditional fitness chains, the boutique fitness studio experience is much more intimate and goes much deeper. The main difference compared to traditional gyms is that boutique fitness studios usually focus on one specific area of fitness and they tend to be more exclusive and community-oriented. MEASURING THE INDUSTRY Growth at boutique studios is booming. According to the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association; between 2013 and 2017, membership at traditional gyms grew by 15%, while membership to boutique studios grew by 121%. Vying for an even larger share of the $25.8B fitness market, studios are ramping up expansion. It is evident how Covid19 affected a lot of businesses. The fitness industry alone, though suffering intermittent and brief closure, had lost almost half of projected revenue as clients wished to postpone or hold their subscription. However,

the industry has been making substantial planning and implementation to show that fitness gyms are a safe place. Clubs must learn to bundle different options delivered via a variety of ways, such as live streaming, and on demand classes, here is where fitness studios have the advantage. CONSIDERING THE MOST NOTABLE THREE AT THE MOMENT Orangetheory Fitness is one of the leading boutique fitness studios with over 1,300 studios across 50 states and 23 countries. Since its start in 2010, the chain has gained over a million members after a decade of operation. It has surpassed a billion-dollar systemwide sales even before 2020. This business model focuses on two groups which are treadmill, and weights or rowers. OTF also has integrated technology into their business such as heart monitoring for safety but also for additional motivation for attendees to gain points which is a clever idea. Crossfit concept is to design and promote fitness regimen that involves constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.

Since its founding in 2000 Crossfit has grown well over 15,000 studios and affiliates. Members can rest assured that regiments they will be following and instructors guiding them are properly certified ensuring consistent, safe, and effective workout. Cyclebar is branded as a premium indoor cycling studio. This is a very interesting concept. Yes, there is nothing new with cycling, and a ton of stationary cycling equipment are being sold out there. Just like the feel and motivation that you can get while in a gym seeing other members exerting more to go further is the idea. Of course, they have regimented exercises for beginners to experienced ones that show very promising results even from running and other weight losing programs. Since its founding in 2004, Cyclebar has established more than 200 locations. BUILD COMMUNITY; WHAT ATTRACTS MILLENNIALS TO SUCH A BUSINESS MODEL. Millennials grew up with access to technology, online retail and the sharing economy; they thus exhibit a discernable preference for experiences rather than products when spending time and money. This apparently contributes to preferences, and expectation of convenient and amenityrich environments. Building communities is a process that not only fosters connection amongst people, but it offers a collective space for experience sharing which is one of the defining ideas of Boutique Fitness Studios.

Fostering Connections: can help members of boutique studios to establish connections or create a network that they can choose whom to connect with. Creates Space for Sharing: Members who have the same interest can have an immediate and safe area to share, talk or exchange information thus appealing more to millennials. Collective Learning and Growth: Granted that there is already a common interest for members of boutique fitness studios. The constant exchange helps its members to learn and expand their network, enticing them to return more for another chance of informational exchange. FITNESS IS ALWAYS A GOOD BUSINESS Investing or starting up your business in fitness is a good

option. Of course, you need to do it right. Looking for the right location, what concept, services or product to sell equally matters. Running it yourself or hiring professionals also weighs-in. At the end of the day, fitness and health, becoming fit and staying healthy for most people is now important. Capitalize on the need of most people for guidance in staying fit, and we are more than happy to get you started in the fitness industry. Unique Personal Training Q&A with SKfit Studio CEO by Janice Charles, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

W

e had the pleasure of sitting down with SKfit Studios CEO, Sylvester King. We are excited to share this fantastic emerging fitness franchise with you!

SO JUST WHAT IS SKFIT? SKfit is a Personal Training Studio franchise opportunity for Owner/Operators or those seeking a semiabsentee franchise fitness concept. SKfit provides Personal Trainers with a place to train their clients. New clients also come in and request individual training, so it is available to anyone seeking one-on-one personal training. SKfit also provides their signature Supplement Line and SKfit Branded Merchandise. Both are very popular with SKfit clients and provide additional sources of income to franchise owners. SKfit has their corporate location in San Diego, CA. They have two franchisees in the New Jersey area with multiple new locations in the works. Let’s learn more about SKfit from “Sly”! WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR FITNESS COME FROM? The passion for fitness stems back to when I was younger and watched the movie “Rocky”. It inspired me to embrace the notion that no matter what’s going on around me, I had a chance to do what I wanted to do when it came to working out. If I worked as hard as I could and made sure nobody out worked me, I felt like I’d succeed.

28

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

WHY DID YOU DEVELOP SKFIT? As a Personal Trainer, I ran into a bunch of walls working for other gyms that I deemed unfortunate. I wanted to have a space where I could train and work out and provide the same opportunity to other trainers. I developed SKfit by taking pieces from other gyms, then developed a first-class studio with SKfit. My main goal upon development of SKfit was to ensure trainers wouldn’t have the frustrations they faced in regular gyms. We really wanted to provide a training studio modified just for trainers. WHO ARE YOUR TRAINERS AND WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO THEY NEED? We have all different types of personal trainers, from athletic to senior trainers. We are a partner facility with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. They have worked with us for over 20 years and are there to help us improve. Our trainers need a CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) certification from any nationally accredited school. WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS AND HOW CAN THEY GET A PERSONAL TRAINER? Our clients typically live in the neighborhood surrounding our studios. Many come to us looking for a trainer. They would rather workout individually so there isn’t pressure to perform in front of others. Individual training provides a comfortable setting for those who may not be sure about fitness and health. Many are the “Average Joe” looking to get one-on-one time in with a professional trainer. WHAT TYPE OF CLIENT IS BEST FOR YOUR STUDIO? DO THEY HAVE TO BE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE? Everyone is our ideal client! All our clients come to us with different needs and abilities. Personal

Trainers customize workouts depending on the individuals’ current fitness level and goals. DO YOU OFFER GROUP CLASSES WITH A TRAINER? We do offer group classes; each location offers their own schedule. Group classes allow family members and friends to workout together. DO YOU OFFER SPECIFIC SESSIONS FOR HS ATHLETES? Yes, we do! We will have them complete a sport specific assessment to understand their needs and goals! Then it’s private training time! HOW IS AN INDIVIDUAL ABLE TO HAVE A PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION AT SKFIT? First, they come in for a complimentary consultation where they can see the studio, meet a trainer, and make sure they are comfortable. Then, we schedule a day for their assessment where we’ll learn about their current fitness ability. After that, we start planning their individual program to accomplish their goals.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A FRANCHISEE? We are looking for Owners who want to be leaders in the personal training industry. This is where they can lead a group of trainers and provide the opportunity to grow their own personal SKfit business. We also have semi-absentee owners, where the studio is always available, and timeslots are booked via our online calendar. There’s not much that needs to be organized except for rental times. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO OPEN AN SKFIT AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO OPEN ONCE SOMEONE HAS SIGNED A FRANCHISE AGREEMENT? Our Item 7 reflects a cost range of $79,400 to $153,800. We provide a new studio turnkey ready in 30-60 days! WHAT STATES ARE YOU TARGETING? All non-registration states as of now before we take over the country!

Are you interested in your own SKfit franchise? Reach out to Steve Phelps with Franchise Genesis at: stevep@ franchisegenesis.com. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Janice Charles is a Franchise Veteran with 40 years of franchising experience. Based in CO, Janice helps franchise businesses as well as finding franchises for people to own. country. All while supporting states on a regional level. Her passion and strong aptitude is in identifying the most qualified and competent people to carry out your mission & goals. With her extensive background, comes invaluable exposure of working with franchisees and staff. Partnering with them in this role, leads to identifying solutions for their operational and hiring opportunities. Maria is passionate about leading by example, a kick-ass work ethic, and believes in an involved, hands-on approach.

Q: I did not know that the fitness industry used staffing firms. Can you tell us about your company Staffing Fitness and how it started? MARIA: It’s kind of a funny and interesting story as to how this company kicked off. The founders actually had no intention of doing recruitment or starting a staffing solution. Xan Carr and Chris Weber met as consultants in the space. Previously, Chris was managing partner for a fastgrowing franchise investment group running multiple units across the boutique fitness

space. Meanwhile, Xan Carr was similarly working as a managing partner with another Area Developer in Texas launching a major franchise brand. They didn’t know each other at that time but both exited and started working with different franchisors as independent consultants. They were introduced by a mutual contact and hit it off right away. Xan had a heavy expertise in Marketing so combined with Chris’s Sales and Operations expertise they complemented each other really well. After a about a year working together the “problem” kept reappearing from their clients “Guys, we love the work you do for us but WHO IS GOING TO EXECUTE… CAN YOU FIND US STAFF?” So naturally the problemsolving lightbulb went off. They initially contacted all the “recruitment” solutions in the fitness franchise space and even tried to outsource recruitment to those companies. Unfortunately, not a single one of them understand the roles their clients needed help with, the need to scale, nor the franchise model well enough. Chris said to Xan “Hey I’ve had 159 employees before, we had to

recruit, train, and develop all of them ourselves so let’s figure this out” They got to work, came up with the brand Staffing Fitness so both candidates and potential clients could figure out who they were and exactly what they did and started talking to hundreds of candidates a week. This built up the network very quickly and brought brand awareness to Staffing Fitness as a go to solution in the space on the candidate side. Naturally they then went back to their clients and let them know they had prescreened, vetted, and highly qualified candidates in their market. Their clients loved it and Staffing Fitness was established in 2018.

Q: Is there a specific qualification process that you take prospective candidates through to present them to your clientele? MARIA: We streamline the pre-screening process by doing an in-depth Client Specification which flushes out exactly who our clients are looking for. Then to further improve our process we use AI application forms to weed out subpar candidates and resumes. Then once a candidate passes the prescreen, we interview and vet them not only for the specific experience needed to be successful but also the personality of the individual.

Q: Does Staffing Fitness work Nationally? MARIA: Absolutely, we have done placements all over America and we actually started working internationally in 2020 to help business recover and grow. Q: Do you work with Franchised Fitness brands? Please give a few examples. MARIA: Franchise brands are the bread and butter of our business. We have worked with franchisees and franchisors in some of the largest and fastest growing brands in the franchise space: Orangetheory Fitness, Crunch Fitness, Club Pilates, Rowhouse, F45

Q: How does Staffing Fitness provide a better recruitment service than Fitness companies themselves or individual studio owners? MARIA: Staffing Fitness utilizes our network of 35,000 candidates and leverages their internal operator knowledge first hand. We do a combination of targeted messaging to only get traction with the right candidates who are what we consider a “rockstars” for the job. Once a candidate shows interest they then go through a highly thoughtful screening and vetting process to flush out only the best of the best. This process saves our clients thousands of dollars in “job board spend” and any between 100-300 hours of sorting resumes and having bad interviews that lead nowhere. ne piece of advice I know I can give,” said Luis Guzman, new owner of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, serving Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise Counties in Arizona. “Don’t skip your home inspection, no matter what, in this hot sellers’ market.” Luis has a dream background for the new career he has chosen. He shared, “I have a solid background in construction with more than 20 years of experience. I have a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a master’s degree in Administration. I was a Construction and Development Director for a Development Company in Mexico and the last 5 years I worked in the same position for two different universities.” Luis knows his stuff. The U.S. building inspector industry, measured by revenue, is estimated to have a market size of $4.9 billion in 2022, according to global research firm IBISWorld. “I was planning to start up my own business in either the construction or real estate area,” Luis continued. “While studying to get a realtor license I came upon the Pillar

To Post Home Inspectors franchise opportunity and realized my profile and experience suited this career the best.” One of the many reasons Luis chose Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, the largest home inspection company in North America, is the innovative technologies the company recently introduced. These advanced technologies, along with the business model, provide an exceptional home inspection with unique and innovative features that are all delivered within a seamless brand experience. All developed pre-pandemic and ready to be utilized when the pandemic struck, the new features further highlight Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ standing as a visionary in its industry. They are: • PTP360 is available with every home inspection and provides an interactive, 360-degree visual inspection summary that brings the inspection report to life and

includes every room and a home’s exterior. It can be accessed anywhere, anytime from any device and shared with family or contractors. • PTPEstimates provides a cost estimate for inspection summary items. This upgrade is extremely useful for sellers who do a pre-listing inspection, letting them learn what recommended repairs will cost based on prices charged in their area. Estimates can be requested with one click. • PTPFloorPlan provides an accurate floor plan of the entire home. This useful upgrade can be used to determine furniture fit and placement, and also provide exact dimensions to contractors for estimating

purposes. • PTPHomeManual is an upgraded service that provides a digital owner’s manual for a home, letting users download manuals/ warranty information, find safety recalls on appliances, learn the age and useful remaining life of systems and much more. Luis says he eventually would like his wife to join him in the business and have several home inspectors on the team. Guzman said proudly, “We will offer the best service…a home inspection service Realtors can trust, not just because of the Pillar To Post inspection standards and training, but because we pay attention to the Realtor's clients. We are easy to book; and deliver the information on-time and

on-site in such a way that the client understands completely so they can just love their new house without worry. And we will do it bilingually!” ABOUT PILLAR TO POST HOME INSPECTORS® Founded in 1994, Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is the largest home inspection company in North America with home offices in Toronto and Tampa. There are nearly 600 franchises located in 49 states and nine Canadian provinces. They’ve ranked in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise500® for 25 years. Community Impact at the Center of Skyhawks Sports Academy’s Record Year by Brett Larimer, Executive Director of Brand Development, Skyhawks Sports Academy

S

ummer is quickly approaching, which means for many people that it’s time to get outside and get active. For parents, summer provides the opportunity to give their kids that option with the burden of finding productive outlets while school is out. This time last year, more families than ever opted to get their kids in camps run by Skyhawks Sports Academy throughout the nation. The

42

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

youth sports camp franchise is fresh off a year of recordbreaking participation across multiple seasons, including nearly 60 percent growth in Summer 2021 compared to prepandemic levels. That level of demand is the

result of parents wanting to give their kids a fun way to learn a new sport, but also validates a larger mission for brands like Skyhawks who serve families – and kids, more specifically – in communities across the country. Franchisees like Kia Mirkia, who operates the locations in the California’s East Bay region, says he saw that excitement first-hand. “Last summer was really the best summer I’ve ever had,” he said. “That happened, even through a pandemic, because Skyhawks always strives to get better and add resources. That doesn’t even mean adding sports, but just adding better processes and procedures, and coming at it f rom an honest way.” Businesses and f ranchise brands know all too well how many changes they had to navigate through the pandemic, but families and kids needed a way out of these interruptions as much as anyone. At the start of this year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called the state of mental health a “devastating crisis” for youth in the pandemic. Whether it’s the isolation and lack of socialization, or even the

disruption of routines, there have been clear impacts for kids of all ages in the past two years. But parents see at least one clear option that could help – youth sports. According to research from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board, nearly 75 percent of parents believe sports benefit their child’s mental health. Naturally, families went searching for that outlet and overwhelmingly chose Skyhawks Sports Academy. Because of their existing infrastructure and variety of programming, Skyhawks camps were able step up to the plate where school programming or city parks and recreation departments lacked resources. That’s exactly the kind of support and community impact franchisees throughout the entire system have sought from the start.

“The reason I do this is because I get joy from helping families in these communities and being out with the kids,” Mirkia says. “I love seeing kids come in, especially the little ones who don’t know what’s going on or don’t have confidence, and watching them build their skills and confidence. I’m a dad, my son is 20 now but I remember how important it was to watch him experience that growth. These life lessons are simple – being a team player and a good sport and help other people – but they’re so important even off the field.” Not only do kids and families see the benefit, but so do the employees. Many of those employees are college students getting their first leadership opportunity as coaches or interns, building experience in the sports industry while spending time outdoors and with kids. “I’ve been a franchisee for

almost a decade, and I love that Skyhawks has never lost sight of who they are as a brand,” said Mirkia. “These are goodhearted people who go out of their way to help you and help the community. ‘Teaching life skills through sports’ is more than a slogan. It’s something we actually demonstrate on a daily basis.” That fulfillment and validation from franchisees, employees, and families prove that not only is the foundation as strong as ever, but that there is always room for growth when your work serves a purpose for those around you. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brett Larimer is the Executive Director of Brand Development for Skyhawks Sports Academy, the nation’s leading youth sports camp franchise. Larimer attended Skyhawks and SuperTots programs as a child, worked as a coach in college, and now dedicates her daily work to positively impacting the lives of children across the nation.

Move for Something

THAT MATTERS by Becca Brennan, Director of Branding, RockBox Fitness Franchise

T

he month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month and RockBox Fitness has found a way to connect physical and mental health through their charity partner, To Write Love on Her Arms. To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery. Through their partnership with TWLOHA, RockBox Fitness has committed to a 2022 goal of $100,000 raised across their network of 38+ open studio locations. Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health according to the CDC. Mental illnesses like depression can increase the risk for many types of physical health problems, like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness. That is why it is so important for people to flex not only their physical muscles, but their mental muscles as well!

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

Here are 5 things that you can do this summer to get active both physically and mentally: 1. Learn a new skill. This can help boost self confidence and can connect you to others with a similar interest. 2. Make a social connection with someone in person. In today’s digital world, it’s easier than ever to connect with people over text or FaceTime, but nothing beats meeting a friend or family member for coffee and catching up face-to-face. 3. Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Don’t sleep on the importance of sleep! Without 7-8 hours of restful sleep, your body will not function at optimal levels and you are at greater risk of getting sick. 4. Make healthy eating decisions. Nourishing your body promotes mental clarity and increased energy levels, all so you can take your summer vacation by storm 5. Get help when you need it. Seeking help is a sign of strength — not a weakness. Visit the TWLOHA Find Help tool at twloha.com/ find-help/

The Leading Medical Weight Loss Brand Celebrates 8 Million Pounds Lost Multiple streams of revenue appeal to franchisees.

M

edi-Weightloss®, the nationally recognized non-surgical weight loss management franchise, has transformed lives for 17 years. With 115 sold locations in 27 states, they effectively battle obesity with an evidencebased program that helps people lose and keep weight off. Recently, Medi-Weightloss reached a new milestone – they have helped patients lose over 8 Million Pounds! “We’re the leading and largest physician-supervised weight loss franchise in the country,” confirmed Andrew Cox, SVP of Business Development.

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

Besides revolutionizing wellness through weight loss, franchisees join a financially sound and successful business structure with huge potential – the top franchises averaged over $1.5 million in revenue last year. It’s not just the clinical expertise that distinguishes Medi-Weightloss in its space. Cox points out that multiple revenue streams make the franchise unique because “25-30% of your revenue is from additional revenue streams. Our vitamin-based injections, specially formulated supplements, as well as our protein shakes and bars sell very, very well in our franchises.” The vitamin-based injections bring in non weight-loss patients who are seeking an energy boost, immune system support, and overall wellbeing. The products, which are highquality and manufactured exclusively for Medi-Weightloss, are part of a comprehensive approach for patients that includes continuous health check-ins, prescription medication, individualized

nutrition plan, an exercise curriculum and more. Patients love the products designed to perfectly complement the Medi-Weightloss program; franchisees love the profit margin. Plus, franchisees get credit when patients buy products online without having to purchase any inventory. And as Cox explained, “We’re not only giving our franchisees credit on website sales for any patient assigned to them, but they’re also able to see when their dormant or former patients purchase online, creating opportunities for the franchisee to reach out and invite the patient to come back into the office.” This franchise opportunity comes with extensive training, web-based systems, and vast support. “I don’t think you’ll find anything to the level of support that Medi-Weightloss has,” Cox said. His Floor Coverings International of Northwest Columbus serves customers throughout Columbus, Dublin, Hilliard, and Upper Arlington, Ohio. “I started right out of college,” Relyea said of his previous

career with the billion-dollar global company. “My time there taught me a business philosophy to live by that I utilize daily owning my own business now: ‘Take care of your customers and employees, and growth and success will follow.” Relyea found success in multiple markets in multiple states with his former employer by following that simple philosophy, “but I knew I wanted to own my own business,” Relyea said. “And I wanted to find a franchise system that had a similar culture to what I enjoyed along with a strong support system for franchisees, especially during the startup phase,” Relyea said. In Floor Coverings International, Relyea found a company that has tripled in size since 2005 by putting a laser focus on consumer buying habits and expressed desires, its impressive operating model, growth ability, marketing, advertising, and merchandising. Floor Coverings International further separates itself from the competition through its customer experience, made up of several simple and integrated steps that exceed

customers’ expectations. For this, Floor Coverings International was given the Innovation Award for Customer Response from Franchise Update Media in 2020, and the same award again in 2021 for Best Use of Technology. Franchise Update is the benchmark publication and conference entity that is the Gold Standard of Franchising. “When meeting the team at Floor Coverings International, I knew they were great people who have fun as a team, but they also had a defined roadmap for a path to business-ownership success,” Relyea said. It should come as no surprise that Relyea pursued the path of small-business ownership since his grandfather, father, and his father’s brothers all owned businesses. “I knew when leaving the corporate world that it was my time to transition from being an intrapreneur to an entrepreneur,” Relyea said. “To be able to carry that torch of successful business ownership into a third generation is something that means a lot to me.” With the home improvement industry booming, the flooring market is also keeping pace. The global flooring market was estimated to reach $409 billion in 2021, according to Grand View Research. The market is

expected to grow at an annual rate of more than six percent through 2028, reaching overall sales of $621 billion. “Trends and styles are always changing and advancements in technology have really helped many different flooring products become much better suited for everyday life in a residential or commercial space,” Relyea said. ABOUT FLOOR COVERINGS INTERNATIONAL Norcross, GA-based Floor Coverings International has ranked consistently as the No. 1 Mobile Flooring Franchise in North America

by Entrepreneur Magazine. The 181 franchisees and their Design Associates offer a unique in-home experience with a mobile showroom that comes directly to the client’s door. Preparing For Summer Doesn’t Always Have to Be Physical by Abi Pepin, Content Writer, FranDevCo

A

s families are getting ready for summer, one problem typically arises: what will students do all summer while they're not in school? While children are being consumed by devices and technology, especially if they’re stuck at home all summer, Skill Samurai’s mission is to help kids channel their obsession and turn it into something that helps prepare them for their future, instead of wasting their summer. The perfect solution to a fun, but also educational summer vacation: Skill Samurai’s summer camps! Skill Samurai’s summer camps offer campers powerful experiences that develop confidence, selfexpression, empathy, self esteem and interpersonal skills. With options like Game Development Camp, Artificial Intelligence Camp, Minecraft Modding Camp, and YouTube Creator Camp, kids have a blast while learning careerreadiness skills. Skill Samurai prides themselves on engaging different learning styles using compelling activities and immersive experiences. Over the past 6 years, Skill Samurai has been delivering

creative summer camps worldwide to over 10,000 students, offering unique programming for the whole family. Skill Samurai’s philosophy and approach to teaching is based on

enrichment with a primary focus on experimentation, confidence building, positivity, and character building. The camps are designed to be a combination of traditional day camp and an innovative art,

science, technology-based program for students ages 8-16. Weekly enrollment is limited by age groups and every week is a new theme. Safety is a top priority for Skill Samurai, as they provide a safe space for campers as COVID-19 lingers. While capacity is reduced, a smaller number of campers contributes to the quality

and overall experience. With an adult-led professional staff with a computer background and summer camp experience, the low ratios also ensure campers are getting the most out of each session.

Extended care is free and included, allowing both kids and parents to benefit from an enjoyable, convenient, stressfree experience. Skill Samurai is set up to be recession resistant with multiple, predictable, revenue streams residing in three distinct industries: education and tutoring, summer camps, and birthday parties. The three industries create a combined and steady growth of $143.8 billion annually. Because of the way technology is replacing jobs with computers at an increasing rate, the need for STEM programs isn’t slowing down anytime soon. BUSINESS DESCRIPTION Skill Samurai is the world’s first Franchise focused on career-readiness education. Their STEM program promotes their mission of becoming a leader in lifelong enrichment. A staggering 50% of current jobs will be replaced with technology by 2025, but the public education system doesn’t have the programs to adequately prepare students for emerging careers in techrelated fields. Skill Samurai provides a clear solution to this problem by offering a career readiness education to students ages 7-18 that build interest, excitement, and requisite skills–not just for the jobs today, but for those that will be in demand in the near future. With such a high demand, Skill Samurai’s Franchise Owners can choose a mobile, on-the-go business model, brick and mortar facility, or a combination of the two. Staff

can be easily trained to handle the teaching so Franchise Owners can focus on building a stable and successful business, while still enjoying their personal lives. Because Skill Samurai implements a selfdirected learning curriculum, a ratio of 1 teacher to 10 students is sufficient. Skill Samurai has a successful, proven business model in place to hire university and college computer science students as teachers and coaches, with locations able to operate with 1-3 part-time employees. FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY The need for advanced IT and programming is continuing to increase. There are currently about 1.4 million open computing jobs, but only about 400,000 computer science graduates with skills to fill them. Skill Samurai offers real programming languages opposed to dragand-drop programs other STEM programs use to simplify coding processes. This future-focused vision allows the Franchise to constantly develop and create new classes, ensuring that Skill Samurai will always be relevant, current, and their curriculum is updated every 6 months to keep up with ever-changing technology. Which Fitness Brand is Right For You? by Greg Mohr, Franchise Maven

W

hy consider fitness franchises as an option to investing? Because people enjoy keeping fit and staying healthy. They also like having a support system to help them do so. I recently had the opportunity to interview Brandon Wilson of Rockbox Fitness and Cary Tober of Alloy Personal Training. To listen to the interview go Franchise Maven Podcast. Whether you are an investor or looking for a new workout this information may come in handy. ROCKBOX FITNESS Rockbox fitness is the fight club that meets nightclub experience. It's boxing, it's

64

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

kickboxing, and functional strength training all tied together. This creates a really fun atmosphere, you've got the loud music, the lights, it's a great time, but the biggest piece of Rockbox is taking the boredom out of fitness routine. Their members are never repeating the same workout routine. Even if they're coming in seven days a week, they're not going to do the same workout twice. It's different every time. Combining these different functionalities to it, makes it very fun, very engaging. And it helps retain members long term because they enjoy coming back. That's the big piece. But beyond that, Rockbox is also holding their members accountable. That is really one of their core values

as well, accountability. Making sure that they are helping them to achieve their goals. That's the big focus for the brand. Steve Halloran, the primary founder, he was an amateur boxer and had some corporate roots and was a serial entrepreneur. Back in 2013. He started Fast Fit boxing. That was really the first iteration of what's now Rockbox. As he started to build that up, he changed the name to Rockbox. And then the other co-founder, Roger Martin, who had been in the pharma industry for 25 years and executive

level positions, he ended up becoming a member and loved the brand saw the big long-term potential of it and wanted to help scale it. He came on board, they started to implement some new systems. And then, shortly thereafter, in 2018, started franchising. The brands partnered up with Jeff Duden, who has quite the background in franchising himself. At this point, they have grown to 54 franchise partners, 36 open locations and over 100 locations sold. A lot of growth is coming this year in 2022, as well. ALLOY PERSONAL TRAINING Alloy is different in the fitness space. And it offers a complete twist on the fitness industry. They don't fight for the limited discretionary income of the 25- to 35-year-olds. They focus mainly on the 45- to 65-yearold age bracket. This age bracket typically holds about 70% of the nation's disposable income. The differentiator for Alloy is that they limit it to about six people per session. They are not doing that big group sweaty, high five thing. They offer highly customized non modality based full body workouts. Their clients are achieving their goals without risk of injury. They focus very heavily on injury prevention. Because if you are in that 45- to 65-year-old age bracket, you usually got like one or two chinks in your armor. You need a little love, a little customization. But the interesting thing about what they do is that they cap all of their facilities at about 130 members. It makes it really easy to start a business and

ramp it up get to 130 members. Then, because of their intense cut to the customization and their high-quality relationships with their members, their retention rates are about 97%. At 130 members, you're really only losing four to five members every single month that you need to replace. With some of the other larger fitness facilities where they might have 500 members, you have to replace something like 50 or 60 members every single month. You're always in driving sales mode, spending a lot of dollars on marketing. What you really want to do is just focus on fitness, really leverage that experience. That's perfect, especially for Alloy. Folks that have had some experience in life and are up there always know what we call it, we call it we call it a premium demographic. We like that better. We like being called a premium. You're like the Cadillac of demographics. Their founder, Rick Mayo, and if anybody's in the fitness space, you may have heard of him, he's been operating since 1992. And he found some substantial fame early on, while he was running just one on one personal training. He got his business in the 90s, up to a million dollars out of his location. I think at one point, it was the highest revenue per square foot of any fitness facility in the country. And he was approached a few years after opening by a franchisee of one of the big gym franchises who said, I love what you're doing on the personal training level. Can you write the programming for my franchise? He did it, and it worked really well. At that point

the big gym’s corporate called and said, can you do it for all of the franchisees? And so, he did that, and then ended up on the board of directors at that gym. He then repeated the same thing for another large fitness franchise and ended up on their board of directors as well. Boutique fitness started knocking on his door. Rick's an entrepreneurial guy, so, he's like, I think I'm just going to franchise myself, and he started doing that in 2019. www.franchisemaven.com ABOUT THE AUTHOR Greg Mohr is a former corporate ladder climber, author of “Real Freedom, Why Franchises Are Worth Considering and How They Can Be Used For Building Wealth”, and has managed restaurants, been a microelectric circuit engineer, owned and operated dry cleaners, storage units, rental properties, and franchises. The Freedom and Flexibility of Homeschooling with the Quality of a Private Education by Kinsey Cooper, Content Writer, FranDevCo round. Seashore Academy’s unique educational offerings, including summer camps, smash the longstanding perception that academically rigorous learning isn’t fun and is something children need breaks from. he idea of ‘school’ conjures certain images in most people’s minds that seem universal to the educational experience. Expectantly waiting for summer break is one of the more prominent ones. But learning shouldn’t only be confined to predetermined time windows sitting at a desk. The right mix of active, functional, handson and outdoor learning keeps young minds and bodies in top shape year-

Marlene launched Seashore as a Mandarin Immersion Program in 2011 and four years later it evolved into a private learning center. By 2019, she was offering customizable academic programming for transitional kindergarten through 8th grade students,

between the ages of 4 and 14. “Parents want to have choice,” explains Marlene, “The shutdown accelerated that trend but we know demand was already there because we grew from 4 to 170 students in one year pre-COVID. We serve top athletes, families that need to travel extensively, gifted children who need to learn outside their grade level, and parents that want their children to love learning but also be held to high standards and strong, traditional values.” Seashore is committed to a 15:1 average student to teacher ratio and offers classes Monday to Friday

FAMILIES ARE TAKING BACK EDUCATIONAL CONTROL The $1.96 trillion U.S. education market is experiencing a significant shift: more families are choosing to homeschool their children. A total of 5.5 million students in the U.S. are currently homeschooled and the global pandemic only exacerbated this trend. In fact, the number of families that moved to homeschooling doubled to 11.1% in the few months between the spring and fall of 2020. Homeschooling offers many benefits, including more educational control and flexibility, but many parents are also looking for support in helping their children excel academically, building strong moral character, and finding opportunities to socialize. Seashore Academy offers a direct answer to these challenges and the growth over the past 11 years is proof that there is a strong market for education options with flexible, structured learning that can be customized to meet individual needs. The Camp Transformation Center: Transforming Lives and Fitness Franchise Expectations

W

hat if someone offered to help you lose 20 pounds in six weeks with unlimited boot camp style workouts, a customized meal plan, and support from a nonjudgmental community? Better still, what if you could get it all for free? That’s the revolutionary idea behind The Camp Transformation Center’s 20-pound weight loss challenge. Though participants do put down a deposit to join, they receive a full refund after successfully completing the challenge. However, a whopping 96% of participants decline the refund and opt to use it towards membership at The Camp. That phenomenal retention rate is largely due to The Camp’s success at helping people get in shape and stay healthy. The roots of The Camp Transformation Center can be traced back to 2004 when working mom Alejandra Font realized that obesity was causing her to be unhealthy and unhappy. She decided to take control of her health and got into fitness, eventually starting a healthy cooking blog and working as a trainer

74

at a local gym. After seeing the benefits of the boot camp process, she and her husband, Luis Font, decided to start their own boot camp. Together with their friend Sam Bakhtiar, who had experience operating a fitness business, they founded The Camp. The three partners soon recognized that working- and middle-class people struggling with weight loss are an underserved demographic in the fitness industry, so they sought to create an experience that would be comfortable and affordable for everyday people. While some boutique fitness centers are more interested in what you wear into their clubs than what you get out of them, The Camp doesn’t think a gym membership should be a status symbol. They provide a top-notch experience at a reasonable rate because they believe everyone deserves to live a happy and healthy

life. Along with dynamic interval workouts in a clean and upbeat gym, members receive nutritional guidance and find a culture of support and accountability which helps them feel motivated to continue working towards a healthier lifestyle. This unique holistic approach sets The Camp apart from the competition and has driven its success. As members reach their weight loss goals, they encourage family members and friends to join The Camp as well. In fact, the program is so successful that many of the company’s franchisees began as members who personally experienced the transformation promised in the company’s name. Those same franchisees have seen that The Camp’s culture of support exists at every level of the business. From day one, franchisees receive expert guidance in

WHILE SOME BOUTIQUE FITNESS CENTERS ARE MORE INTERESTED IN WHAT YOU WEAR INTO THEIR CLUBS THAN WHAT YOU GET OUT OF THEM, THE CAMP DOESN’T THINK A GYM MEMBERSHIP SHOULD BE A STATUS SYMBOL

implementing The Camp’s business model. The development team provides advice on securing financing, choosing the perfect gym site, hiring qualified employees, and much more. A two-week intensive training program prepares franchisees to manage daily operations without a hitch, and a 12-week pre-sale campaign means that the new gym will have members on day one. Best of all, the assistance doesn’t end when the gym opens. Franchisees receive ongoing support through content creation for marketing campaigns, monthly business operation trainings, access to franchise business consultants, and networking with other franchisees. Now is the perfect time to invest in a fitness franchise. Many people thought that gyms wouldn’t recover from the COVID-19 lockdown; but according to research reported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the pandemic has “prompted consumers to place a heightened focus — and greater spending — on their physical, nutritional, and mental fitness.” Americans are ready to shed the pounds and the bad habits they acquired over the last two stress-filled years, and The Camp is helping them do just that in more than 100 locations across the country.

Since January, they’ve opened two new fitness centers, and another 12 are scheduled to open by the end of 2022. The Camp’s mission statement is, “Inspiring our community through health and wellness to transform lives.” And they’re looking for like-minded individuals to assist them with that goal. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and are passionate

The NOW Massage Expands Footprint Across The Country;

Targets 175 Boutiques by 2025 With accessible prices and a celebrated design aesthetic, the fast-growing massage f ranchise is set to revolutionize the industry

Q. Tell us about The NOW’s evolution and how the business was started? A. The NOW Massage

D

ubbed “L.A.'s most stunning self-care oasis” by Forbes, The NOW’s highly Instagrammable locations feature clean, modern interiors that incorporate natural materials, heightened by the scent of its signature jasmine coconut candles. We caught up with Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer Gara Post to discuss the brand’s continued success and why NOW is the time to invest in the wellness industry.

78

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

franchise was founded on the principle that self-care is a necessity, not a luxury. My husband Jason and I cofounded The NOW with our company Post Investment Group, which focuses on three sectors; health and wellness, real estate and consumer products. We saw there was a void in the marketplace for high quality massage in an inspired setting without the time commitment and cost of a traditional spa. Success followed and we scaled from one to four boutiques in 18 months. Our franchise journey began in 2019 and in less than two years, The NOW Massage reached the monumental achievement of signing its 100th franchise location. This is just the start as we embark on the next phase of our national expansion and franchise journey.

Q. What sets The NOW apart as a brand? A. We strive to make each NOW Massage boutique feel connected but unique in its own way. Using canvas draping to separate massage spaces adds an airy feeling to the relaxed atmosphere. Some themes are the same; sheepskin throws, a carefully placed cactus gallery and whitewashed walls that echo the sounds of ocean waves. Our Massage Therapists receive advanced training on the custom menu that go far beyond the traditional modalities one would expect.

Guests can choose from three Swedish-based massage options and select from a curated menu of customizable enhancements. The goal of each bespoke massage service is to make self-care simple and easy to integrate into one's daily life. Straightforward monthly massage memberships are designed to save repeat guests money, and provide special monthly gifts and perks.

Q. Who is the ideal NOW Massage Franchise Owner? A. The NOW Massages’

ideal franchise owner is a multi-unit operator and entrepreneurial self-starter with a passion for wellness. We have built an inclusive culture upon a common set of Brand Truths – encouraging our franchise owners to “Live In The NOW,” which means to be present and take time to recharge and reconnect within. Also, “Care For Those That Care For Others,” is one of our core values and calls on our franchise owners to foster an environment where team members feel valued, recognized and rewarded. One of our favorite brand truths is “Kindness is Magic,” positive energy is really important and creates a circle of warmth for our guests.

Q. What are your top growth markets for 2022? A. Looking ahead, the brand is aiming to open additional franchises in markets such as Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis,

the Tri-State area and more. We recently brought on Jeff Platt as President of The NOW. Jeff became well-known in the franchise industry as co-founder and former CEO of Sky Zone, where his leadership helped transform the company into the largest indoor trampoline park brand in the world, with over 225+ locations in 12 countries, visited by over 20M people a year. In his new position, Jeff has helped The NOW Massage achieve its 100th license milestone and his top-notch leadership will continue to support the brand's future growth plans.

Q. Why is NOW the time to buy a NOW Massage Boutique? A. Owning a NOW Massage franchise is a good investment for multiple reasons. For starters, the global wellness economy is forecasted to grow 60% by 2025*. The NOW Massage also boasts competitive buildout costs, a recurring and predictable revenue stream, in-depth training and support across real estate, operations, marketing and more, plus a seasoned executive team

with a combined 50 years of experience. All of this contributes to a scalable model that allows for franchise owners to easily open multiple units. Finally, there is a pride of ownership that comes with owning a NOW Massage boutique that our franchise owners really embrace. It is truly a lifestyle brand where guests can come to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect within through the healing benefits of massage. (*Global Wellness Institute) The cost to open a NOW Massage franchise ranges from $414,850 - $767,600, including a $60,000 franchise fee. Director of Catastrophe is His Official Title

U.S. Army Veteran Calls on Skills Learned in the Military to Lead Paul Davis Catastrophic Restoration Response by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates

J

ake Wilson is a man in motion before trouble – in most cases, catastrophic trouble – even hits. His mind is racing in a hundred different directions, but he processes it all in a calm, assured manner thanks to his six years in the U.S. Army that taught him the importance of discipline and leadership. Whether it’s a hurricane,

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

wildfire, earthquake, snowstorm or any other natural disaster that Mother Nature can dish out, Wilson is literally the man in the eye of the storm for Paul Davis Restoration, one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry. He’s a Master of Disaster, or according to his official title, Director of Catastrophe and Field Services. But that doesn’t

do justice to what Wilson really does, because he’s very good when things are very bad – just the type of qualities you want from the person in charge – in helping lead Paul Davis teams across North America to become heroes by delivering extraordinary care to people in their greatest time of need. “Paul Davis shows up in times of despair, chaos and disaster. The facial expressions I see are always the same when we show up to serve. They are signs of gratitude and relief. Knowing it more than likely is the worst time of these peoples’ lives makes what we do feel less like a job and more of a selfless service,” Wilson said. Wilson was formerly a Quality Assurance manager for six years with Paul Davis before assuming his newly created position in 2021, in which he trains, oversees, and directs

catastrophic restoration efforts for Paul Davis, the insurance industry’s restoration expert and recognized as one of The Best Franchises to Open in 2021. A typical day for Wilson, is to be honest, unlike any other day, because there is no typical day for Wilson. He might be tracking hazardous weather events across all time zones; establishing the needs and resources local offices will require for cleanup; conducting network calls with hundreds of Paul Davis offices to determine who can offer support; dealing with insurance companies regarding claims and much more. Once onsite, he’s working with local officials to reach damaged properties that might be affected by r oad closures; directing the removal and storage of property contents; overseeing tree removals, water extraction and repairs to damaged pipes, boarding up houses… the list is endless. Wilson and the Paul Davis teams he directs are clearly Difference Makers™, honoring daily the 2022 tagline of the company, as they provide extraordinary care for those affected by disasters in their communities. “By shifting the course of a tragic moment in someone’s life, not only are you changing

that moment in time, but you’re also making an impact on their life,” Wilson said. “Each and every moment, whether good or bad, will make an impact on a person at their lowest point. Those impactful moments are ones that change the course for their lives. Changing their life leads to changing their world… the world they live in. I’m a Difference Maker because I help save the world by changing lives and serving those in their time of need.” Wilson served in the U.S. Army from 2003 to 2009, serving as a Military Police Special Reaction Team and Corrections Emergency Response Team leader. He was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., but was deployed to South Korea and Iraq. The military laid his foundation of integrity, respect, honor, discipline, and leadership and after his separation from the military, Wilson said he searched for a long time to establish a career “that was bigger than myself.” “I wanted to be in a field not only where I could continue serving the people of this great nation, but a career field that was fulfilling, meaningful and one that amplified purpose. That’s when I stumbled upon the restoration industry,” Wilson said. “Leading teams here

at Paul Davis has been a lot like the teams I’ve led in the military. The Army’s core values are equivalent to our serving basics, making teamwork, leadership and partnership second nature. “Dropping into catastrophic chaos to assist those in their time of need is abundantly equivalent between the two careers, minus the gunfire and explosions. The teamwork, camaraderie and the duty are one in the same.”

The best in Boutique Fitness Xponential Fitness is the largest global franchisor of boutique fitness brands. The company operates a diversified platform of ten brands spanning across verticals including Pilates, barre, cycling, running, rowing, dancing, stretching, boxing, yoga, and functional training.

Anthony Geisler is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xponential Fitness. He is a fitness franchising veteran with over 20 years buying and building household names. After successfully growing LA Boxing into the largest boxing, kickboxing and MMA fitness franchise in the U.S., he then sold it to UFC Gyms and saw there was more opportunity in specialized workouts in a boutique, premium setting. Geisler bought Club Pilates in early 2015, a small collection of boutique Reformer Pilates studios concentrated in California that is now the largest Pilates brand worldwide. In 2017, Anthony recognized there was further opportunity with scheduled boutique fitness and ormed Xponential Fitness to acquire and build the best brands across every major modality in boutique fitness. He formed a founding Xponential team and recruited the industry’s experts for each brand’s growth.

Xponential’s leadership team has decades of experience in fitness and wellness franchising. We have the network, resources, platform, and playbook in place to ensure continued growth and expert support every step of the way.

My brother and I wanted to find a business that resonated with us and what our core beliefs were. Growing up surfing and being active everyday then progressing to professional rugby but now with families meant we naturally gravitated towards the gym environment and opening a BFT means we can create that fitness focused community we’ve always enjoyed, along with creating a legacy for our children. BUSINESS ADVICE

Is Your Franchise Preparing a Lesson Plan for Teachers? by Mark Siebert, CEO, iFranchise Group

W

hile there was no empirical evidence at the beginning of 2022 that teachers were quitting in record numbers, there has been ample news about teacher strikes, a slew of TikTok videos that went viral featuring fed-up teachers quitting, and protests over stagnant pay and lack of safety measures by public school officials. The plight of public school education and the need for supplemental learning for students is not new — test scores nationwide have been steadily declining for years, especially in math and science — but what is new is this exodus is providing a potential new source to draw from for both franchisees and employees for your childenrichment franchise. Or if you’ve been considering franchising your concept, this is the time to consult with a franchise expert to assess

110

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

whether you’re ready for that next step, and if not — how to get there. Schools, like the restaurant and retail industries, are having trouble recruiting and retaining workers. But, in addition to a shortage of teachers, there’s a shortage of teachers who want to go back to teaching in the public school system. This means there’s a readily available source of potential franchisees who have the training to lead or work in educational franchises – and the heart to do so. Teachers know how to follow established systems and procedures, prepare lesson plans and work closely with parents, as well as children. They are also well-versed in the value of teamwork and multitasking — and no small feat, they know how to deal with difficult parents. Budget cuts at many schools are eliminating music and art programs, which will also add a number of creative people to the unemployment ranks. And competitive parents are always looking for former star athletes or coaches to provide additional sports training to make

their son or daughter the next Olympic gold medalist or pro player. With uncertainty still clinging to the economy, many of these talented educators are at a point where they’re considering other opportunities. So why not yours? A former teacher may not be able to afford the franchise fees and the buildout of a brick-and-mortar center on his or her own, but several educators banding together in a consortium could. We’ve seen this work in other industries, such as the high-end kenneling business, where we brought together multiple veterinarians to

A FORMER TEACHER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE FRANCHISE FEES AND THE BUILD-OUT OF A BRICK-AND-MORTAR CENTER ON HIS OR HER OWN, BUT SEVERAL EDUCATORS BANDING TOGETHER IN A CONSORTIUM COULD. share the costs and profits. This model will work for opening one location or several over a period of time. As the franchisor, you can act as a “matchmaker” from your existing leads or hire a firm to put together the consortium for you. While a consortium may be necessary in highercost franchises, those not requiring real estate, such

as tutoring, are even more accessible to this group. A selling point for educational franchises has always been the flexibility they offer, as well as the support. If you already have former teachers as franchisees, ask them for testimonials. They can become your super promoters since they’ve found success in your

organization, and can also be a good resource on how to bring more like-minded people into the fold. Stand out in a crowded field by emphasizing your credibility, ethical leadership team and safety measures, all of which are especially important when offering services to children. Take some time with your marketing team to define what you offer that would be particularly compelling to educators. What are you the best at? Do you offer skills that similar concepts don’t; do you have a proven system that is unique to the area where you’re recruiting? It’s human nature to want to go with the best, but coming out of a pandemic, instincts will lead us to opportunities that are a comfortable fit for both our skill set and lifestyle. So put a human face on your opportunity, along with the numbers and stats. And above all, don’t get caught up with the idea that all teachers will make good franchisees, or even good employees. Do your due diligence, just as you expect them to do. But it wouldn’t hurt to stock up on apples, just in case your next discovery day or training session is filled with teachers.

Find REMARKABLE Results with a medspa810 Franchise by Stephanie Sumner

Non-invasive aesthetic services have become increasingly safe and effective. Procedures such as injectables and chemical peels are rapidly gaining popularity as both men and women seek to rejuvenate their appearance and experience minimal posttreatment downtime. The rise in a health and fitness culture, changing lifestyles, and higher adoption of antiaging solutions are driving the growth of the medical spa market. The global medical spa market is expected to reach $27 billion by 2023. Further,

medical spa industry revenues have grown more than 20% annually since 2013. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons defines a medspa as "a combination of an aesthetic medical center and a day spa that provides non-surgical aesthetic medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician." Francis X. Acunzo is a 25-year veteran of the spa industry. With his wife and business partner, Colleen, the couple is

recognized as the founders of the medical spa movement in the United States. Francis had the vision to create the industry's first consolidation of day spas, merging his medical spa company with the nation's most prominent cosmetic laser company. This merger was the conception of medspa810. Francis personally handselected the aesthetic procedures, services, and skincare product lines offered at medspa810. His goal was to give consumers a more personalized experience when seeking nonsurgical aesthetic treatments - one that always prioritizes safety, professionalism, and comfort. WHO IS MEDSPA810? medspa810 is a leading franchisor of medical aesthetic clinics that provide injectables, clinical skincare services, laser hair removal,

and body contouring. Each medspa810 operates under the supervision of a medical director, and all service providers are licensed in their respective fields and receive extensive training and support. Through our consultation process, clients identify their goals, and together we create a treatment plan to meet these goals within their budget. Our team partners with franchise owners to continue to build upon a proven business model. Our membership program is popular with regular clients and drives recurring revenue. medspa810 services include: • Injectables – Botox(R) and dermal fillers • Clinical Skincare Services – facials, chemical peels, light-emitting diode (LED) therapy, and more • Laser Hair Removal • Non-Invasive Body Contouring – CoolSculpting® OWN A MEDSPA810 For more information about owning a medspa810, contact Rhino7 Franchising: medspa810info@r7fdc.com.

Door Renew is Beautifying Doors Across the US by Stephanie Sumner

as painters and other tradespeople typically do not refinish doors. Additionally, the refinishing process can be completed at a fraction of the replacement cost. THE PROCESS

I

n 2012, John Eggenberger began transitioning from his corporate office job to start a door refinishing business, which enabled him to embrace his passion for woodworking. Growing up with nine siblings who enjoyed crafting and carpentry projects, it is no surprise one of them ended up going into the restoration business. "One of my brothers started refinishing doors and realized it presented a business opportunity. He

118

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

kept telling me how much he enjoyed the work, how happy the customers were with the finished product, and the huge need for door refinishing," Eggenberger said. Intrigued yet doubtful of its potential success, John started to refinish doors and other woodworking projects for a growing number of clients. To John's surprise, work continued to pour in, and Door Renew was born. Today, demand is strong for Door Renew's services,

The door is your home's first impression, and Door Renew ensures it looks its best. Door Renew uses techniques gleaned from tradespeople who refinish antique wooden boats; Door Renew employs a professional, thorough, and long-lasting approach to door restoration. Whether wood grain or fiberglass doors, Door Renew uses a multi-step approach to renewing the door so the customer does not have to replace the door. After a homeowner's door is removed, a temporary door is installed, and the Door Renew trained craftsman begins the restoration process at their local workshop. To restore it to its original beauty, the team first strips down the door to its original state. With the old finish stripped away, they meticulously sand it clean of all faults. Restoring the deep-seated glow of each raw slab door

BEFORE begins with meticulous cleaning. All traces of dirt, dust, and oil are wiped away, leaving a clean slate for refinishing. The craftsman applies a fresh coat of stain, giving it an eye-catching sheen worthy enough for displaying the beauty just brought back to life. Door Renew seals all doors with at least five coats of a high-build, top-quality, marine-grade varnish containing UV filters. A finish coat is applied, and the result is a beautiful stain that will withstand the constant beating of the elements. The door renewal refinishing process can be performed on any residential or commercial interior or exterior door. At Door Renew, door and wood refinishing are their specialty; it's all they do. DOOR RENEW FRANCHISING – A PROVEN PATH TO BUSINESS SUCCESS As Door Renew grows, it is expected to "BLOW THE DOORS OFF" nationwide with little to no competition in the door refurbishing space. With strong demand for door restoration across the country,

AFTER

BEFORE

in 2020, Door Renew started to franchise. In 2021, Greg Longe was named CEO, and Rhino7 Franchising and Development began supporting the franchising sales. Door Renew franchisee and Rhino7 CEO Doug Schadle says, "The opportunity with Door Renew is striking to me. As the Franchisee in Raleigh, NC, we have the chance to be the dominant provider of our services in the market rapidly. The competition is limited, and the need for our services is high." Door Renew founder John Eggenberger demonstrated that it does not take a professional craftsman to open a door refinishing franchise. Door Renew has an extensive hands-on training program and has developed a proven system with a record of success. Door Renew is an area developer model - all markets are exclusive to a single franchisee. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to grow a more significant business and develop it over time.

AFTER As the franchisee's territory grows, they can easily scale up their business to multiple territories in their market. FRANCHISE SALES Rhino7 Franchising and Development has significantly expanded the Door Renew footprint across the country. In a brief time, Door Renew has several locations in development in multiple states. Rhino7 supports franchisors by offering sales, operational, real estate, and development support. For more information on a Door Renew franchise, please email doorrenewinfo@r7fdc.com.

s the weather begins to warm up, the consumers are warming up to the idea of a refresh. BBQ’s, family get-togethers, birthday celebrations. . . All these things tend to take place in the home. Having a fresh coat of paint, maintenance on the house, fixing the little cracks here and there, fresh epoxy in the garage; any one of these can make the difference between being proud of your home or hoping someone else is hosting! Folks want to feel comfortable and confident in their house and we at Painter Bros give them the peace of mind and luxury of a beautiful home, inside and out. Doing business across in all 50 states, we understand different climates, seasons, and regions, and what it takes to provide the proper solutions for each specific area. We are not a one size fits all provider. From using the right paint in the desert states to prevent sun fading over the years, to ensuring the stucco walls don’t damage by the humidity and rain in the coastal regions, we’ll make sure you are fully equipped and prepared to provide the right solutions and education to your customers, no matter where you are located. One of the most difficult parts of the construction and business services space is seasonality. As a Painter Bros franchisee, you’ll find that the summer months grow busier for your residential

Spring Brings Pollen and Opportunity by Brandon Wilson, Director of Franchise Development, FranDevCo

A

llergy season is in full swing across the United States and as the pollen count rises, so do negative health impacts for the 19.2 million adults diagnosed with hay fever in the past 12 months. As people try to balance the desire to spend time outside with avoiding allergy triggers, they start looking for solutions that will offer the best of both worlds. Yes, medication is one way to keep sneezes at bay but keeping the inside–and outside–of the house pollenfree is just as important. That’s why spring is the time many homeowners schedule window and pressure washing appointments. It’s also a great time to talk about the benefits of franchising with exterior cleaning businesses like Window Hero. AN OPPORTUNITY OF EPIC PROPORTIONS The recession-resistant exterior cleaning industry is a $10.3 billion market in the U.S. and it is poised for continued growth. Window washing alone is expected to have grown 6.9% in 2021 to reach $1.9 billion. With increases in building activity and residential home improvement investments,

there are only going to be more opportunities, especially for companies that focus on the customer experience. We know that 86% of consumers read reviews for local businesses and 93% say that online reviews influence their purchasing decisions. However, the exterior cleaning industry is highly fragmented–only one industry player captures more than 5% market share–and most operators compete primarily on price. That leaves plenty

of room to gain market share through customer service. Plus, in a market like exterior cleaning that has traditionally been highly dependent on commercial ventures, focusing on service-oriented models yields additional opportunities in residential property maintenance. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS OUR SUPERPOWER With a business model designed for low investment, minimal employees, and

ability to scale, Window Hero has a lot of strengths. But our real superpower lies in a commitment to customer service–including a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee– because happy customers mean more market share, repeat business, and recurring revenue. In fact, when Founder Tyler Kirk launched Labor Panes, which would later become Window Hero, in 2005, he did so as a “customer service business that happens to do exterior cleaning.” Fifteen plus years, 14 Owners, and 17 locations later, the many lessons Tyler learned have been turned into solutions that benefit both customers and Owners. For example, jobs can be scheduled online–an uncommon convenience in the industry–or by calling our

company-owned and operated Sales and Scheduling Center that handles scheduling, customer questions, and lead generation. Because the CRM works hand-in-hand with the Sales and Scheduling Center, that team is also able to generate exact proposals, including any discounts, that can be accepted online; efficiently route jobs; and notify customers when technicians are about 30 minutes from the property. That frees up Owners to focus on doing great work onsite and growing their business while ensuring customers are treated as a priority. Once onsite, Window Hero’s fully insured technicians execute a diverse range of professional services, including window washing and pressure washing, with a unique,

solution-based process that uses the correct pressure and the appropriate equipment to transform outdoor living areas gently and safely. By including damage-free gutter cleaning and gutter guard installation services, which see high demand in winter months, Owners avoid the seasonality that can impact similar businesses and customers get yearround support. Window Hero gives Owners all the tools to create an experience that leads to a loyal customer base and recurring revenue. Combined with the other business features, Window Hero Franchisees are set up for profit and success. BECOME A HERO Spring symbolizes opportunity and Window Hero is looking for motivated, experienced leaders with good communication skills and business experience to join our franchise family. BUSINESS ADVICE

Did You Know You Can 1031 Exchange into a Leased Property? by Brandon Wilson, Consultant, The Franshie Consulting Company

This is an amazing way to 1031 into Franchise Investments. Your entire buildout and location can be covered by 1031 exchange funds.

L

ong-Term Interests, in some instances, feetitle real estate can be exchanged for leasehold interests. Internal Revenue Service regulations state that a leasehold interest of 30 years or longer is like-kind with feetitle real estate. Subsequent rulings provide that option renewal periods are included in determining the leasehold interest length; thus, if the lease has a 20-year initial term and three five-year options, the length of the lease is 35 years for 1031 exchange purposes. For example, to avoid incurring a sizable taxable gain, Dan Smith wants to use an exchange to sell a $750,000 office building and purchase a franchise or group of franchises utilizing those proceeds. My team and I work in the process to identify a

suitable franchise and/or multiunit opportunity. We select a brand and move forward in leasing one, or multiple locations. We negotiate a 10-year lease with two 10-year extensions. This provides us with a leasehold length of 30 years. In compliance with IRS guidelines, Smith can sell the office building and buy the leasehold interest as replacement property to complete a successful exchange. These new franchise investments allow for a significant tax deferral, as well as offer income to the former property owner. Tenant improvements, build outs, acquisitions can all be funded through this exchange. The opportunities for growth as well as tax savings is immense. Please feel free to reach out for more information.

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

To witness the economic resiliency of our business model, look no further than unit-level performance of the average Express office. The latest FDD shows that offices open more than two years average more than $6.1 million in sales. New offices succeed

as well, with first year sales averaging more than $900k and doubling in year two. Together with our owners, we recently celebrated the end of a monumental year here at Express. In 2021, our owners achieved 3 consecutive quarters of record-breaking sales, with company revenue topping $4.1 billion for the year. Year-over-year growth remains strong in 2022, with sales up more than 15%. Express was recently named the #1 staffing franchise by Entrepreneur for the 11th consecutive year and one of America’s best professional and temporary recruiting firms by Forbes. While these accolades mean a great deal to us, one of our proudest accomplishments is earning a 99% satisfaction rating and the designation of being a World Class Franchisor by our Franchisees for the 16th consecutive year. These accolades and the opportunity that is present with Express made an impact with those who joined in 2021, as we awarded 66 new franchise owners. Our business model is simple: our franchise owners work within their communities to

help people find good jobs by helping companies find good people. We offer a full range of employment solutions, including temporary staffing, evaluation hire, direct hire, and professional search services. And with businesses struggling to fill their job openings, the staffing industry is experiencing high demand with no end in sight. At Express, ideal owners are those who can commit themselves full-time to daily operations of the business, are personable and high-energy, have strong communication skills, are community-minded and sales-driven. Our owners often come from corporate America, having led and managed teams in the past, and are ready to put their well-honed business acumen to work for themselves.

In 2021, Express franchise owners put more than 586,000 associates to work with more than 84,000 unique clients. Even in times of economic uncertainty, such as those the world has experienced over the last two years, the staffing industry remains recessionresilient despite market changes. The staffing industry is big business, with the market projected to exceed $182 billion this year. In preparation for our continued market share growth, Express has extended our $25,000 new owner incentive into 2022. Any new owners who are awarded a new territory with Express before the end of the year will receive $25,000 after they complete New Franchise Owner Training. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support

from The Franchise Consulting Company, which is why we’re excited to announce the return of our infamous $50,000 Bounty Market List. With more than 110 open territories remaining across North America, we’ve handpicked 25 of our top territories and need your help to find qualified owners for these areas. As a thank you for your hard work and continued efforts, consultants who refer a candidate for a bounty territory that awards by December 31st, 2022, will receive a $50,000 placement fee – that’s an additional $18,000 bonus on top of our standard $32,000 placement fee. Each time a target territory from the bounty list is awarded, we’ll add a new one to the list. If you want to learn more about the opportunities with Express, make sure to attend our Broker Discovery Day on May 24th. When you register, you’ll receive a gift basket from Express and for those who join and stay until the end of the presentation, you’ll be entered into a raffle $100 $500 gift cards. Express has open territories remaining across the U.S. and Canada, in addition to a revolving inventory of resale opportunities. Now is the time to refer your candidate to Express. IFA Franchisee of the Year Recognized for Advocating for Inclusion in Healthcare

T

Jerome Philips of A Place At Home - South Portland

MAY 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

he International Franchise Association (IFA) named Jerome Philips of A Place At Home – South Portland as Franchisee of the Year. Philips was honored at IFA’s 62nd Annual Convention in San Diego, California, for being an outstanding franchise establishment owneroperator. “Franchisee of the Year Awards are the highest honors presented to individual franchisees,” said Matthew Haller, President and CEO of the International Franchise Association. “These local business owners, like Jerome, represent some of the best entrepreneurs in the country. We are proud to recognize his contributions to his community, his employees, and all those he serves.” The Franchisee of the Year

Award recognizes leading franchisees who exemplify at least one of IFA’s “Open for Opportunity” core pillars: Community, Workforce, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Veterans. Jerome Philips, owner of A Place At Home – South Portland, is passionate about keeping seniors in their homes longer, with a better quality of life. That mission means providing his clients with safe and effective care and ensuring that his caregivers have a safe and inclusive environment with which to provide that service. Over the years, Portland has struggled with racial and cultural disparity within its local healthcare system, making providing safe and quality care difficult. In the past, clients and other customers have had the option to say they don’t want care provided by someone with an accent or from a particular ethnic background. And healthcare agencies have had the option of accommodating those requests.

Cooperating with racially driven requests poses several issues. Inclusion, for one. The first and most obvious issue is that of racism and discrimination in general. Allowing individuals to turn away caregivers because of their ethnic background perpetuates a cycle of unfounded inequity. It also impacts the quality of care that’s available in general. Caregivers are highly qualified and trained to do their job well, regardless of their background. And, from an employment perspective, it’s a problem. “It’s a huge issue because it’s preventing those employment opportunities for entire communities.” Jerome shares that as soon as they opened their doors, they wrote policies against discrimination for his employees and clients. Even with those policies in place, it’s been necessary to express to some of his clients that they won’t make accommodations for them that are based on racial discrimination. And for families that are blatantly racist or hostile toward individuals? Jerome discontinues services. “We terminate services because we won’t make those accommodations. It’s not fair to our caregivers, and our caregivers know that we have their back, that we support

OVER THE LAST COUPLE YEARS, THE PANDEMIC HAS BROUGHT THE CONCEPT OF CARE IN THE HOME INTO EVEN GREATER FOCUS. them, and we’re willing to make difficult decisions so that they have a safe working environment.” Thankfully, once a hesitant family accepts a caregiver, they end up becoming attached. In Jerome’s experience, the situation goes from something the client may have found uncomfortable initially to a situation where they’ve formed a bond with that person and find comfort in the quality of care they’re being given. In addition, they find the caregivers are highly trained, efficient, and able to help in an invaluable way. Jerome’s stance on these issues goes beyond how he operates A Place At Home. He’s committed to seeing a change from a higher level. He’s partnered with the Oregon Healthcare Association (OHCA). Together, they’ve advocated for their caregivers. They’ve had discussions with legislators at a state level expressing their concerns. “We’re talking to them and giving them very real stories because they really don’t understand what it’s like for our employees.” Operating under the old paradigm undermines the quality of care available. However, the new guidelines will offer hope if other agencies get on board.

Jerome believes they will, even if that means they’ll have to decline care to those clients who won’t comply. Most clients, he believes, will realize that they can’t determine their caregivers’ race. So they’re going to have to become comfortable with the idea of inclusion. And he believes that agencies changing their practices when it comes to accommodating discriminating requests will positively change the experience of home care for all parties involved. “If the whole industry enforces these guidelines, change will come.” Over the last couple years, the pandemic has brought the concept of care in the home into even greater focus. As a result, several hospital systems are testing models of delivering care to patients in their homes. The idea is that treating people in familiar surroundings will produce better outcomes from a quality of life perspective. We need a skilled, effective, compassionate, and diverse workforce to provide quality care. Inclusion policies are key. Jerome and A Place At Home – South Portland are here for it.
