Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I was born into a family with a strong business background, I’ve always been on a path shaped by my father’s entrepreneurial spirit. From a young age, I was immersed in the business world, learning the ropes of commerce and leadership through handson experience. Growing up as the eldest son, I was introduced to the family business at a young age. By fourth grade, I was already accompanying my father to the company, taking on tasks related to operations and logistics. My involvement increased as I entered high school, where I began handling administrative responsibilities. This early exposure cultivated my passion for entrepreneurship and led me to choose accounting as my major in university, a decision influenced by my close relationship with my father.

What was the defining moment or idea that led to the creation of your business?

The pivotal moment that solidified my desire to become a businessman came after my university graduation. I envisioned how to drive growth in the family company and sought opportunities to expand its reach. A major turning point was the acquisition of

a limestone and sandstone factory in Riyadh. This strategic move not only improved the company's supply chain but also significantly reduced costs, demonstrating my ability to turn innovative ideas into practical solutions.

How did you approach financing your startup and what challenges did you face during the early stages?

Securing funding for my entrepreneurial ventures presented its own set of challenges. Initially, I relied on a favorable loan from my father, as startup funding was not readily available in Saudi Arabia at the time. However, Saudi Vision 2030 introduced numerous funding sources and incentives

for entrepreneurs. Despite this, I faced significant obstacles, including a lack of expertise in manufacturing processes and knowledge of the stone industry. Challenges ranged from selecting the right blocks and quarries to negotiating prices and managing financial agreements.

Can you share some of the key accomplishments and goals your business has achieved since its inception?

To address these challenges, I focused on building relationships with trustworthy suppliers who were willing to support and grow with the business. I implemented a comparative pricing strategy to stay competitive in the market.

One of my notable achievements was the development of a manufacturing methodology that enhanced production efficiency and reduced waste. By upgrading machinery and setting specific criteria for stone selection, I improved production rates and quality, resulting in a fivefold increase in factory sales and the successful funding of large-scale projects.

What strategies have you used to build a strong team, and how important is having the right team to your success?

Following the success of the factory, the team and I turned our focus to the growing housing sector around 20092010 in Saudi Arabia. We invested heavily in concrete manufacturing plants, which proved highly successful for three years. After this period, I shifted my focus back to the water and sewage sector, continuing to work closely with my father to address new challenges and opportunities in this crucial field.

Did you encounter any major setbacks or failures along the way, and what did you learn from them?

On a personal level, starting from 2013/2014, I embarked on a new phase of my career in the entertainment and restaurant investment sector. The biggest challenge was selecting a concept with growth potential for the next five years and ensuring it was viable. Financing was secured through bank loans. Key challenges included acquiring customers, meeting their needs, understanding their behavior, and ensuring

repeat visits—particularly in the restaurant and café industry. Abdullah’s investment journey in the restaurant and café sector has been notably influenced by Abdullah AlKoursh, a prominent investor with over 20 years of experience. Al-Koursh is a pioneer in the restaurant industry in southern Saudi Arabia, renowned for his expertise in attracting customers, innovating brands, developing products, and effective pricing and marketing strategies.

How do you stay innovative and adapt to changes in your industry or market?

I’ve always been proactive in the restaurant and café sector. I identified a significant market gap in providing specialized franchise consulting, becoming one of the first consulting firms in the franchise sector. I also contributed to developing the national strategy for the commercial sector in Saudi Arabia.

How do you deal with competition, and what sets your business apart from others in your industry?

To stand out from the competition, I emphasize delivering high-quality work at a fair value. I help brands transition into commercial support roles, facilitating their growth with minimal risk. My approach includes having the business owner or entrepreneur actively involved in the process, participating in meetings, and maintaining continuous oversight of quality. Regular communication with clients, understanding their challenges,

and promptly addressing obstacles with the team helped me maintain a unique position in the market, distinguishing my business from competitors. Often.

How do you manage work-life balance, and what advice can you give to other entrepreneurs facing this challenge?

Balancing work and personal life is one of the greatest challenges entrepreneurs face, especially in the first three to five years of starting a business. This period demands focus and a high level of education, making balance difficult. However, it is essential to work smart, not just hard, to achieve strategic goals. Entrepreneurs need to allocate specific time for personal life, including engaging in physical exercise to enhance thinking, find solutions, and reduce stress associated with entrepreneurship. Additionally, having a circle of friends outside the business environment is important for relaxation and gaining positive energy, which ultimately improves work performance.

Paul Davis Restoration of Tampa crew came together for a special team building event in support of the American Red Cross and our local Tampa Bay ARC chapter. The event, held at the Tampa office, was not just an opportunity for team building, but also to acquire vital life-saving skills through CPR training to further assist the community in time of need.

The training session, conducted by a certified American Red Cross instructor Paul Wichert, equipped the team with the knowledge and skills needed to perform CPR in any emergency situations. The team learned basic CPR, AED, choking, severe wound first aid, and environmental first aid. This

initiative underscores Paul Davis of Tampa’s commitment to the safety and well-being of their community, reflecting the core values of Paul Davis Restoration.

The national franchisor entered a sponsorship agreement with the American Red Cross in January of this year.

“So far we’ve held Blood Drives and Sound the Alert community programs that introduced smoke detectors to the community, and we helped distribute them with the help of local firefighters,” said Darren Impson, Owner of PDR of Tampa.

LEARNING FROM CHALLENGES

While adding senior placement services was successful, not every service line is destined for success. During COVID-19, A Place At Home launched the ‘A Place At Work Program’ offering employee health screenings. Despite already having the necessary staff, A Place At Home found the market saturated, with many businesses managing the screenings internally or outsourcing them to other companies.

Floor Coverings International Franchisee Says Family Drives His Passion to Flourish

When family comes first, good things follow. That philosophy is going to serve Preston Dumas well since he opened Floor Coverings International of Clear Lake, serving a wide territory including League City, Friendswood, Clear Lake, Seabrook, Kemah, Clear Lake Shores, Nassau Bay, El Lago, Taylor Lake Village, Dickinson, Bacliff, San Leon, Bayview, Webster and parts of Houston and Texas City.

Dumas is joined in the venture – which officially opened its doors on June 17, 2024 – by his wife, Emily, who serves in the combined role of project coordinator and office manager. In addition, Miles Dumas, Preston’s brother, will serve as the team’s Design Associate. To say that family is the bedrock of their business is not an understatement. “I have a wife and two young children,” Preston said. “They are the reason I get up and go to work each day. When I leave the house, I want to make sure that my time spent away from them directly impacts our lifestyle

in a positive way. I want to be proud of the products I sell and the service I provide. As a business owner, I get to ensure that happens on every job. Whether we sell a floor or not, we strive to help our customers and make sure the experience they have with us is a positive one.”

Forty-seven-year-old Preston spent more than 25 years in hospitality and sales management, a background that he believes closely parallels his new career. “I’ve always gravitated toward solving problems for customers with a focus on customer service,” Dumas said. “Flooring is the same thing: customers come to me with flooring problems they need to solve, and everyone appreciates a great customer experience.”

“Most people only buy a floor on average 1.7 times in their entire life. My wife and I have replaced flooring in our house five times prior to owning Floor Coverings International,” Dumas said. “We have the unique

experience of understanding how transformative a new floor can be and I really want to be able to share that feelgood experience with my customers. We can’t all afford to move every time we get bored with our living space, but we can change the flooring and feel as though a dream came true.”

Preston’s background has uniquely positioned him to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, especially working alongside his wife. His advice to aspiring franchisees is grounded in honesty and realism. “My wife and I both realize the most important thing is to trust and respect

one another and stay in your lane,” Preston said. “And my advice to other franchisees is to do your research and find something that speaks to you the way Floor Coverings International did to us. Once you can get behind an idea, it becomes fun and rewarding.”

And while the real estate market may still be somewhat fickle, those who do take the plunge and become movers, are also shakers when it comes to their flooring, Dumas said. “Fifty percent of new home buyers replace a floor in the first six months and our area is growing fast,” he said. “Both millennials and boomers are turning to

Q. Tony, how do I best manage my time?

A. Most people don’t know how many hours are in a week. If you are part of this majority— and even if you already know the answer—let’s break it down together: There are 168 hours in a week. 56 of those should be spent sleeping, and we average another 12 on personal maintenance. That leaves the average person with 100 hours to manage, which are typically split between personal and professional commitments.

Focus on five to seven HighLeverage Activities (HLAs) in both aspects of your life to maximize the impact on your life and your franchise growth. HLAs are the activities that are the highest and best use of your time; getting clear on these will Force Multiply your efforts.

Q. Tony, how do I determine the best use of my time?

A. In 2006, I wrote my bestseller, Strategic Acceleration. In it, we introduced the concept of HLAs. As I mentioned, having five to seven HLAs that you prioritize within your personal and professional hours can help you zero-in on that best use of your time. If you are stuck on how to isolate your HLAs, try making a list of goals,

a list of your daily professional and personal activities, and rate and compare these findings until you’ve singled out which activities have been working best or even what new activities you must implement to achieve your goals even faster.

When identifying my own priorities to create a clear vision for my day, week, month, or year, there are five key areas I like to consider (my professional HLAs):

1. Attracting strong qualified business prospects.

2. Delivering great value to our clients, partners, and readers.

3. Using clarity to constantly sharpen the

When something comes to my life and it doesn’t fit into one of those items, I have to be careful about saying “yes” or pouring too much time into those initiatives so I can really stay focused on the HLAs I’ve already defined for myself. I encourage you to do the same thing—what are your big five HLAs?

Q. Tony, how do I manage flexibility as the day quickly progresses?

A. My solution for this is a classic—create a daily priority list and regularly assess your progress. You can do this on your notes app, a legal pad, or somewhere more formal; whatever works best for you and is accessible for you to check frequently. Several times a day, ask yourself, What's the best use of my time right now? Adapt your schedule as needed when new tasks arise. At the end of the day, evaluate whether you

achieved the desired results or merely stayed busy. Xs in the boxes mean you’re being productive—keep it up! Focus on being actively productive, not just busy.

By zoning in on those HLAs in your personal and work life, you'll make the most of your time and see some serious progress. Waxxpot bolsters its leadership team with the appointment of Adam Pennington as Chief Revenue Officer and Jenna Materre as Director of Training and Guest Operations Officer.

The man behind the new team is Michael Abramson, COO and President of Waxxpot, who has carefully curated each addition to align with the refreshed values and longterm goals of the brand. Abramson himself joined the Waxxpot team in January 2024, bringing with him over 10 years of experience in key leadership roles including creating and launching D1 Training’s franchise system, and serving as COO and CRO for Xponential Fitness.

Adam Pennington was appointed as Chief Revenue Officer in early July, bringing with him over 17 years of distinguished experience in real estate, construction, and business development. He most recently served as Chief Growth Officer at Xponential, the largest global franchisor of boutique health and wellness brands, including Club Pilates, Pure Barre, StretchLab, and Lindora, among others. During his tenure, he and his team managed all facets of real estate and construction, successfully influencing the opening of locations nationwide. At Waxxpot, Pennington will spearhead initiatives in new store growth and customer acquisition.

Jenna Materre will fill the role of Director of Training and Guest Operations, being officially appointed in June. She brings over five years of experience in the beauty industry, graduating from Paul Mitchell the School of Cosmetology. Materre most recently worked as National Trainer for high-end med-spa brand, OVME. Before that, she supported European Wax Center as one of their earliest Field Operations Trainers, and one of three supporting the brand on a national scale. She’s also worked with Tarte Cosmetics and Tata Harper Skincare. As Director of Training and Guest Operations, Materre’s focus will be on assisting franchisees in choosing key team members including Wax Specialists/estheticians. She’ll be training both the Wax Specialists and front desk support teams on standards and techniques for in-room services and front of house guest relations.
