welcome NOTES

On and off the battlefield. Our veterans have always held a sacred place in our history and hearts. After standing their post and defending our freedoms, they come back and many continue to serve their communities as First Responders. Many become business owners. These are the people who sponsor the little league teams and support the local Boy & Girl Scouts. You see them managing the parades for 4th of July and doing food drives for those in need. Veterans and service members never stop serving our country, they find other ways to continue. Many are looking into ownership of franchises like never before.

This issue celebrates our military veterans and the accomplishments they have made on and off the battlefield. The many companies that are highlighted in this issue all have a

military connection as, in fact most franchise companies do. Just about every franchise system counts veterans amongst its ranks of business owners.

Roughly a quarter of all veterans are interested in starting their own businesses. Franchises are a very popular route to go for many of them. With the business framework already in place, opening a franchise is an easy way to enter the market.

The International Franchise Association reported that 1 of every 7 franchises in America is owned by a veteran.

Groups like The Veterans Franchise Council and VetFran are dedicated to helping veterans with their transition. Steve Taylor a US Navy Officer, Annapolis graduate and the Chair of The Veterans Franchise Council said “Veterans helping veterans through the experiences that we have shared and the experiences that

many of us have had through franchise ownership is why we started The Council. We are fortunate to have many resources at our disposal to help our fellow veterans when they want to investigate business ownership”

The number of veterans owning franchises may be so large because of all the help available to make business ownership possible. There are many tools veterans and their spouses can use to help make the decision to buy one of the numerous franchises.

Also hundreds of companies offer incentives for veterans to become a franchise owner. Here are a few things you need to consider if you are interested in franchises.

Veterans are buying into franchises at a record pace. Here are a few things to consider if you are interested in owning one.

The first things you need to do when considering opening a business is to decide if owning a franchise is the right thing for you and your family.

ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING FOUR QUESTIONS:

1. Are you passionate about the industry you are considering?

2. Is this merely a hobby you enjoy or will you actually like to take this on as a business?

3. Is there room in the market for this business?

4. Is this the right time in your life to open a business?

A MYRIAD OF RESOURCES TO HELP Start your research with

the U.S. Small Business Administration. They have a veterans business outreach center (VBOC) program. They offer services to help veterans with business training, counseling and referrals.

This includes workshops on business development for issues such as being selfemployed. There are business counselors available to help on a one-on-one instance as well.

The VBOC program also offers a feasibility analysis to help veterans determine if a business will be successful.

They will review your business plan in doing so. Speak with other veteran business people and ask for their mentorship. They are willing to help.

WHAT IS THE VETERANS BUSINESS OUTREACH CENTER PROGRAM?

The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC)

program is designed to provide entrepreneurial development services such as business training, counseling, and resource partner referrals to transitioning service members, veterans, National Guard & Reserve members, and military spouses interested in starting or growing a small business.

SBA has 22 organizations participating in this cooperative agreement and serving as Veterans Business Outreach Centers (VBOC).

HOW CAN THE VBOC PROGRAM HELP MY SMALL BUSINESS?

SBA's VBOCs offer workshops, training, counseling, and mentorship opportunities in your area. VBOCs can also help you navigate SBA’s extensive resource partner network and refer you to a community partner, lender, or SBA program.

TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

VBOCs work closely with SBA district offices and Transition Service Managers at military installations to conduct Boots to Business classes for transitioning service members and their spouses. VBOCs also help conduct B2B Reboot classes off installations for veterans of all eras, National Guard and Reserve members, and their spouses.

PRE-BUSINESS PLAN WORKSHOPS

VBOCs conduct entrepreneurial development workshops dealing specifically with the major issues of self-employment. An important segment of these workshops covers the usage of the Internet as a tool for developing and expanding businesses. Each client is afforded the opportunity to work directly with a business counselor.

BUSINESS PLAN PREPARATION

VBOCs assist clients in developing and maintaining a five-year business plan. The business plan includes such elements as the legal form of the business, equipment requirements and cost, organizational structure, a strategic plan, market analysis, and a financial plan. Financial plans include financial projections, budget projections, and funding requirements.

COMPREHENSIVE FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS

VBOCs provide assistance in identifying and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the business plan to increase the probability of success. The results of the analysis are used to revise the strategic planning portion of the business plan.

ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING AND COUNSELING

VBOCs, working with other SBA resource partners, target entrepreneurial training projects and counseling sessions tailored specifically to address the needs and concerns of the veteran entrepreneur community, including service-

disabled veterans, women veterans, and veterans interested in procurement.

MENTORSHIP

VBOCs conduct, as appropriate, on-site visits with clients to ensure adherence to their business plans. Additionally, VBOCs review monthly financial statements to determine whether a revision of the business plan is warranted or that desired results are being attained.

If you decide to go the franchise route, first, decide which type of franchise you would like to own. Next you should look to see what franchises are available in that industry. You will want to take into consideration the requirements to own a particular franchise in that segment. You should also research the market in the place you wish to open your business.

Asking the franchisor if you can work in the business before you buy it is always a good idea. Similar to taking a car for a test drive. See what it’s all about.

The Veteran Entrepreneurs Act of 2017 provides entrepreneurship training to veterans and their spouses. The bill would amend the Small Business Act to include a female veteran’s business training program as well as one for disabled veterans. An outreach center will provide financial assistance including financial management, marketing advice, training and technical help.

The opportunities to embrace entrepreneurship apply to all in the United States and we have the millions of men and women who have served our country to thank for our ability to do so. Read on to learn more about a few of the amazing men and women who have gone on to find business success through franchising.

Honoring Veterans in Franchising

November is the month when we celebrate and honor veterans for their service to their country. But just because they may no longer be on active duty in the military, it doesn’t mean that these brave men and women are no longer playing a major role in propelling America forward. In fact, many veterans translate their military careers into entrepreneurship.

Veterans own about 6% of all businesses in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census Bureau. They employ 3.9 million people and earn more than $945 billion in receipts.

Many translate their drive and passion into creating a business of their own. And franchising can be a great fit, allowing them to be their own boss while working within a proven chain of command— something they are very comfortable and familiar with after their military service.

VETS’ GOALS AND POTENTIAL

Like any member of the workforce, vets want a job that will allow them to use the skills they acquired during their military career. They want another career, not just a mere job, something that capitalizes on the skills and experiences they obtained over the course of their service.

But the reality is transferring their military skills can be a challenge. Just as they may find they need to readjust themselves to civilian life, our military men and women may need assistance in translating their hard-earned military skills into a new line of work. Much is made of the work ethic the military instills. But that isn’t all the skills that someone who has served walks away with when their service ends. Fortunately, there are many valuable resources specifically tailored to veterans and their unique needs that can provide much needed insight to help

them on their journey to a new career. A great place to start is with VetFran.

VALUABLE SKILLS FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

What are the valuable skills that vets take away after their military service? Well, beyond the much-touted work ethic, there are a range of qualities prized by the military that are equally valuable in the world of franchise entrepreneurship.

First, there is the pride and dedication that comes from having served your country. This skill translates well in the franchise arena, where franchise business owners must take great pride in their work. Being an entrepreneur means aspiring to higher standards to ensure that your reputation and that of your business is elevated. Otherwise, your business doesn’t stand a chance of competing in today’s competitive marketplace. Vets get this, which is why they make excellent franchise operators.

Then of course, there is the structure and organization that vets learn during their service. A military background means the person knows how to follow a system and understands the value in trusting work that has been proven before them. The same

AS
WE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE, WE MUST NEVER FORGET THAT THE HIGHEST APPRECIATION IS NOT TO UTTER WORDS, BUT TO LIVE BY THEM.
— John F. Kennedy

is true of a strong franchise. One of the most important benefits of buying into an established franchise system is the tried-and-true structure that comes with the business. Franchise organizations offer proven methods that are easy to replicate and offer a path to sustained profitability.

Next is the respect for leadership and teamwork that is instilled in all members of the military. Franchise systems, just like the military, operate with a strong respect for the chain of command. As a franchise business owner, you are at the top of that chain. Being in command of your own business means delegating responsibilities to your staff, something that you started to learn on day one of your military service.

Now it’s time to focus on the work ethic and sense of resilience that veterans possess. Every day is different in the military, which is how it is running a franchise as well. Veterans have been trained to deal with unexpected challenges, and this sense of resiliency, on top of their work ethic, will serve them well in the challenging but thrilling world of franchising.

More than ever, Americans crave the knowledge that they are contributing to the greater good. In increasing numbers, we seek out businesses that align with our values, or that have missions we believe in, to support. If anything, that impetus is even stronger among veterans who will go out of their way to support one another, including in their new franchising endeavors. Veteran franchise owners can capitalize

on this reality through branding and image, letting the world and their fellow veterans know who they are supporting by frequenting their business.

Finally, the military is an outcome-motivated world, and it creates people that are focused on being a resultsoriented planner. The thorough preparation that is behind every military operation, from combat to humanitarian aid, helps vet franchise owners manage their day-to-day business. Thanks to their background in careful preparation, franchise owners know how to methodically plan to reach their business goals. Veterans offer franchisors a rich background in time management and detailed planning skills.

It is easy to see why franchising appeals to so many veterans. If you think that owning your own franchise might be the right path for your post-military career,

it can be helpful to work with a qualified franchise consultant. Seth Lederman of Frannexus has years of experience helping vets and others find the best franchise to meet their goals and dreams. Wild Bill's Gives Back To Veterans

Q&A with Michael Quilty

Werecently spoke with Mike Quilty, the CEO of Wild Bill’s Craft Beverage Co. Mike is a Navy veteran and CEO focused on creating a franchise that meets the needs of fellow veterans.

Wild Bill’s sells craft soda and commemorative and collectible stainless steel mugs at events across the US and Canada. The mugs come with unlimited daily refills of Wild Bill’s pure cane sugar craft soda, which is served from a mobile wild west saloon. The company is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Q: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH WILD BILL’S?

After selling my first business in 2011, I spent a lot of time working with veteran not-for profits. I came to the reali zation that the best way to support veterans was to help them find career opportuni ties that matched their talents and training. I acquired Wild Bill’s in 2018 with the intention of creating a business to cre ate employment and franchise opportunities for veterans.

Q: WHAT KINDS OF EVENTS DO YOU ATTEND?

We service all sorts of shows such as comic cons, anime events, gaming conventions, state fairs, rodeos, car shows, renaissance fairs, and motor cycle rallies. Our collectible stainless steel are custom de signed for each event. Every mug comes with unlimited refills of our pure cane sugar craft soda.

Q: CAN YOU GIVE SOME RECENT EXAMPLES OF EVENTS?

This year some of our favorite events include the Miramar Air Show in San Diego, California, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, the

Marine Historic Half Marathon in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Calgary Expo, in Calgary (Can ada) and GenCon in Indian apolis, Indiana. My personal favorite was FanX, a comic con in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CRAFT SODA?

Wild Bill’s offers over 20 flavors of craft soda. The most popu lar flavors are root beer, vanilla

24 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE

cream, orange, black cherry, birch and sarsaparilla. This summer we launched a sea sonal rocket pop flavor which was a big hit with customers.

Q: HOW WAS THE BUSINESS IMPACTED BY COVID?

Like all entertainment (large gathering) businesses, we saw a dramatic slowdown dur ing the pandemic. This year we have seen a phenomenal rebound as people are back to attending large events. All our franchisees were able to ride out the shut down and reo pen in 2022.

Q: HOW DOES WILD BILL’S SUPPORT VETERANS?

Wild Bill’s is veteran owned and operated. As such, our culture is very “in tune” with members who served in the military. Last year we launched our Veteran Fran chise Program. The program provides equipment financ ing and a $20,000 discount on the initial franchise fee to qualified veterans.

Q: WHAT SHOULD VETERANS KNOW BEFORE CONSIDERING WILD BILL’S?

The work is during the week ends and is seasonal in most markets. Of course, it helps if you enjoy attending events.

Q: DO YOU HAVE COMPETITION? HOW IS WILD BILL’S DIFFERENTIATED?

Of course, there are other drink options at the events at which we participate. But our offering of high-quality mugs and pure cane sugar craft soda sets us apart.

Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NEW FRANCHISEES?

Our training is in the field at real shows. That’s the best way to really learn how the equipment works and figure out what it takes to execute on an event.

Q: DO YOUR FRANCHISEES NEED EXPERIENCE TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

No — we do all of the training. What is needed is a strong work ethic and leadership. We’ve found that the veteran community is the right place to look for individuals with these skills.

Q: WHAT MARKET ARE YOU CURRENTLY FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING?

While we are definitely open to all parts of the country, our focus markets are Arizona, California (southern), Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexi co, Pennsylvania, and Oregon.

A Veteran’s Experience in Purchasing an Irrigation Franchise

Mr.Joe Alvarado attended a Boots to Business program that is facilitated by the Veterans Business Outreach Center in 2021 because he wanted to research entrepreneurial opportunities. Joe had heard many Veterans pursued franchise business ownership opportunities because of the systems provided by a Franchise. Joe reached out to me because he wanted to educate himself on options that may be a good fit for his career objectives. Joe and I immediately hit it off and I was fortunate enough to assist him in finding a franchise business model that met his needs.

I asked Joe a few questions

about he and his family and his experience with the process of exploring franchise businesses in his hometown of Tucson AZ.

Tell us about your family. Are you a native to Tucson Arizona?

I am originally from Los Angeles, California, and I met Valerie at my first duty station Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida. Our 18th Wedding Anniversary will be this summer in 2022, and our life has been such an adventure. First, we left Florida, went to Colorado Springs, CO, and were there for six years. Then, we transferred to an unbelievable assignment in Rota, Spain, and were there for four years. We discovered so many cities during that time. Then our last military assignment ended at

Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. As soon as we arrived, it felt like home to us. We decided to move down to Sahuarita because it gave us a smalltown feel with great amenities, and we knew this would be a great place to raise our daughter. The deciding factor to keep us here is our Church and family friends. They had made an easy decision for us to stay here. If you asked us, what is my best assignment?

It would be a tough decision. We have experienced many different cultures and friendships, but each place has something unique about why those places are great.

Q: ARE YOU INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

JOE: Yes, we are heavily involved with our local Church. My daughter and my wife are Greeters who help out by handing out ministry information with smiles. As for me, I teach Life track classes, and the focus is on teaching more about the history, mission, vision for the future, and how they can be a contributing member of the Church.

28 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE

Additionally, I like to help with the Men's Ministry by leading a group of men to off-roading vehicles in the local area and having guest speakers help with our spiritual growth.

Q: WHY DID YOU WANT TO START A BUSINESS?

JOE: During my Air Force career, I always knew I wanted to be in business but did not understand at the moment what it would be. I took advantage of military business classes such as Boots to Business throughout my career. I also took follow-up classes through Mississippi State University. The Air Force gave me the tools to lead and manage people through schooling. I recently found out that my mom's side of the family was a business owner. I thought it was interesting that I had the same mindset as my mother's side. In June of 2021, I felt this was the right decision for my family to start researching franchises. I knew I wanted to positively impact the community by hiring local talent and creating local community leaders. I am passionate about building teams and being a good mentor for younger adults. Lastly, I want to monetarily make a legacy for my family and positively impact our local community. I specifically picked a Franchise because of my military background and how it has the same concepts of how to be successful. The military and franchising follow the same ideas, such as processes, systems, training, uniformity, culture, structure, goal orientated, and much more. All this led me to believe it would be a natural transition for me.

Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CONSERVA IRRIGATION?

JOE: It was not easy to make this decision because there are a lot of great brands to choose. Conserva Irrigation Franchise was the 10th brand we vetted before making a final decision. For us to make a good decision, we had mentors such as Bill Stark (The Franchise Consulting Company), Sue Oliver (AZSBDC), Dale Clack (AZSBDC), and Margaret Evangelesta (Arizona Veteran Business Outreach Center) to get to this step. As we were vetting the other franchises, we figured out what our business model would need to be. We did google reviews to see how other brands were performing because it shows the true character of the leadership. While learning more about Conserva Irrigation gave us a better understanding of how and why it is so essential in the desert. We felt it was necessary to share that with our local community, and that's why

we had to take that step to see them face to face. After completing our verification, we called other Franchisees and asked questions to the leadership team. Then, we went to the headquarters and were impressed to learn more about the leadership, how passionate they are, and their family culture. We then understood why the corporate department support team received high reviews. After getting to know the support team, we learned that to succeed, we would need a strong support team to reach our goals, and Conserva met those requirements. Lastly, we strongly believe in each other, knowing we can be successful.

has owned several businesses himself, in this new economy, Larry says: I believe there's a major paradigm shift happening. It's not enough to build wealth. Nowadays, the successful entrepreneur has to understand how to accumulate, accelerate, protect wealth, and mitigate taxes.

when they exit the business, they're not giving decades of wealth to some tax collector or some creditor, and that's what we're here to discuss today.

Larry Carnell has over three combined decades of award-winning franchise and business ownership, managerial development and advisory expertise, Larry has helped 1000s of people selffund, manage and strategically exit their business. Larry is the recipient of international and national awards, including Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He has been a frequent speaker, instructor and trainer for numerous organizations, including universities and associations with their respective seminars and conferences. He is one of our go-to people for funding a new business, a new franchise, and for a good exit strategy.

Larry’s background is in accounting and finance, he

And if you don't use the tax code, and wealth protection strategies to do that, in this new economy, even if you've accumulated a lot of wealth, that wealth can be taken from you with health care, liability, risk and other things. And so, I believe the best longterm strategy for a successful entrepreneur is to use the tax code. And these strategies to help you do that, if you want to be successful, do what successful people do. Wealthy people have the advantage of hiring people to tell them things and give them access to programs that most Americans don't have access to. And so, the reason Greg and I work together is we're focused on not just helping somebody get into a business, but helping them understand how to structure a business, so that

Larry often encourages a combination of programs. You've got to work with somebody that you know has several options to help customize a program to maximize your ability to get the necessary capital to acquire the type of business you want, but at the same time, minimize your exposure to overhead and other things. At Benetrends they use an assessment program to determine what your financial reach is. They look at things like your credit score and your post close liquidity, that's a major issue with lenders today, do you have enough money after the business is up and running to pay for personal living expenses, out of pocket expenses, not just to pay for your rent and utilities, but also run the business with working capital?

a one stop funding resource. They do all kinds of funding, SBA micro loans, unsecured back lending, ROBs (rollover for business), RAPs (Roth advantage plan). People are very excited about programs that allows them to use their retirement funds penalty free. You can use those funds either alone or in combination with an SBA loan. The Robs and the Raps programs now have become the fastest growing forms of funding in the country.

There are two programs. One is called Rob's program or the Rainmaker plan. The that was introduced, actually in 1982. In the late 1990s, and in the last 20 years, a new product, called the Rap or Roth Advantage Plan has exploded in popularity, it's preferred up to 10 to one by CPAs over the Rob program. This program has a very distinct benefit. With the Rob's program, you're able to use your retirement funds, let's say you've got $100,000 in your retirement funds, you can use that money tax penalty debt free to buy a business either alone or in combination with an SBA loan. The Rap program converts the money to a Roth vehicle. You create a Roth vehicle where the business is owned by the Roth retirement plan.

Traditional IRA is only protected to 72 years of age. At 72 years of age, we have to do what's called a required minimum distribution RMD. When that happens, the money is forced out of the protection of the retirement plan into an unprotected checking or savings account. Larry’s concern with that is that it's going to happen sometime in the future when tax rates may be higher.

And it's also happening at the very decade of your life, where your health care costs could literally increase tenfold.

So, at a time of your life where these risks are growing exponentially, traditional IRAs don't provide the long-term protection that a Roth does. And the other benefit for all us parents out there. If you have a traditional IRA, and something happens to you, according to payscale.com, children are often at their peak income, their peak tax rates, when the parents pass away, they may inherit a million dollars from their parents, you've literally pushed your kids into the highest tax bracket, they can lose half of their inheritance. But money in a Roth is not only protecting you from future creditors, but it goes

directly to the children and bypasses federal and state tax collectors; the children often end up with double the net inheritance.

A lot to consider, I know! I used the ROB’s program to start my business. Please reach out to me for an introduction to Larry and the ROB’s and RAP’s programs.

As the son of Veteran who had a full 30year career in the Army, I grew up with a deep and profound respect for those who serve, and have served, our great country. Our Veterans come from all walks of life and have a very diverse set of skills. The very skills that enabled them to be successful servicemembers, are the skills that make many of them successful franchise business owners! I recently sat down with one of my clients, Martin “MG” Spanial for a Q & A session. MG is a Navy Veteran and I

assisted him in exploring and evaluating various franchise options which resulted in him choosing to acquire 3 territories in Texas for Strickland Brothers 10 Minute Oil Change. I believe his answers could be of benefit for other Veterans who are searching for their next career mission.

Q: MG, TELL US WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATING FACTOR(S) FOR YOU TO WANT TO JOIN THE US NAVY?

MARTIN: I wanted to serve my country and am proud to have served.

Q: WHEN DID YOU JOIN AND HOW LONG DID YOU SERVE?

MG: I joined in 1984 and received a 2 year ROTC Scholarship, 2yrs Reserve duty during school, then upon commissioning as a regular surface line officer, 8 years of active duty. That included 3 deployments, one of which was to war.

Q: WHAT DID YOU DO CAREER-WISE WHEN YOU LEFT THE NAVY?

MG: Initially I was a manager of a sign company, then Manufacturing and Industrial Engineer in Manufacturing. That was followed by a 20year stint with GE in multiple

roles including Facility Manager, Global Contracts

Manager for multi-year service agreements, and West Region Leader for Baker Hughes, a GE Co.

Q: MOVING AHEAD IN TIME, WHAT WERE YOUR REASONS FOR EXPLORING BUSINESS OWNERSHIP THROUGH A FRANCHISE?

MG: I always recognized that business ownership was the key to financial independence. Having run a real estate investment business for several years I also recognized that an established model for business success could be found in a franchise.

VETERANS You Already Have The Skills For Success!
"[I WANTED A FRANCHISE] I COULD COUNT ON ONCE I LEFT THIS WORLD, TO TAKE CARE OF MY TWO CHILDREN WITH DOWNS SYNDROME – AND LEAVE A LEGACY TO THE REST OF MY CHILDREN."
— Martin "MG" Spanial

Q: WHAT ARE THE ATTRIBUTES OF A FRANCHISE BUSINESS THAT WERE/ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?

MG: A business model that allowed me to replace my earned income with passive income without having to have many multiples of the franchise to support that goal.

A Franchise that truly supports of the success of its franchisees, not just financially, but one that is willing to establish a relationship with those franchisees for their success.

Something I could count on once I left this world, to take care of my two children with Downs Syndrome – and leave a legacy to the rest of my children. This is my true motivation.

Q: TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS YOU USED TO DETERMINE WHICH FRANCHISE WOULD BE THE

BEST FIT FOR YOU?

MG: I hired a consultant, Joe Fox - Senior Franchise Consultant from The Franchise Consultant Company, who is willing to guide, redirect as required, and suggest items for consideration, but that would not push for an outcome other than that which I wanted. An advocate for my family and my needs. In other words – I had to have control of the process and choice, the ultimate decision was not going to be knee jerk, or based on emotions, or an arbitrary time frame, but on cold hard data and meeting most if not all of my critical to quality (CtQs) standards for evaluation.

Once the consultant was selected, we went over personal details, needs, wants, desires, likes – etc. Then he took financials and other considerations and presented multiple potential choices. To be frank the first round was mixed results. But the

results of that gave focus to the 2nd round, By the time we narrowed the field to 2-3 choices it was clear what was important and what we were looking for. The final approval of 1 Franchise for me coming on board was received, but the financials just didn’t seem to be what I wanted. Especially, as I began to dig into the details required searching for acquisitions or new builds. So, consultant suggested I look at an “up and coming” franchise that might be of interest. That was Strickland Brothers 10 Minute Oil Change – I haven’t looked back.

MG: 1. The people are real during my validation visit before signing, I met staff, asked all the questions I

Q: WHAT WAS IT THAT MOST ATTRACTED YOU TO BECOME AN OWNER OF MULTIPLE LOCATIONS OF STRICKLAND BROTHERS 10 MINUTE OIL CHANGE?

could think of, and had frank and honest discussions with the Corporate Operations Manager and with the CEO of the company. They were truly interested in setting me up for success.

2. The model is simple but strong

3. The ability to compound, I could make a living on 1 location, but the ability to have more than one location would put me in a whole new financial position.

4. They discounted my Franchise purchase fee by 10% because I was a veteran.

Q: YOU HAVE NOW OPENED TWO LOCATIONS. HOW IS IT GOING?

MG: Things are going well thus far. We acquired one existing business and transformed it into the Strickland Brothers standards. We also built one location from the ground-up. The existing business was a great starter for me as we were able to improve the operations and almost triple the daily car volume by the end of the first year. The new build location is a beautiful location that is ramping up after only being open just over 5 months we have a good customer base and should see a strong ramp as we start to tap into repeat business from earlier in the year.

Q: LASTLY, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHER VETERANS WHO ARE CONSIDERING FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP?

MG: First, as a Veteran, you have the requisite skills and behaviors to be successful in a franchise. You have self-

discipline, a sense of purpose and drive to succeed, and you understand team dynamics.

Even if you have not spent much time in business, the benefit of a good franchise is the protocols and systems they provide for your success. Strickland Brothers emphasizes servant leadership and customer service. With the point-of-sale system they use, you can learn the business part quickly enough, taking advantage of their systems and metrics for success. You provide the sweat equity and come out on the other side a winner. You will be running your own business and leading a fantastic team of individuals that you assemble.

With two stores up and running since June of this year I expect my payroll to exceed $240K for the last half of 2022, and it is a great feeling to know I have positively affected the lives of my customers and employees in a year when so much in our Nation seems

to be in flux. Taking this calculated risk is well worth the rewards and a great way to continue to serve your neighborhood, your state, and your nation.

What I learned from this insightful session with MG is that many Veterans already possess as he put it, “the requisite skills and behaviors to be successful in a franchise. You have self-discipline, a sense of purpose and drive to succeed, and you understand team dynamics.”

Franchise ownership can be a great way for a Veteran to have a meaningful career in the civilian world after having so honorably serving our country! If you are a Veteran in search of your next career mission, consider the franchise opportunities that are available to you!

Thank you for serving our country!

So You Are A Veteran –

SO WHAT?

Questions and Answers with a Veteran Business Owner and Franchise Consultant

WHAT SKILLS DO I HAVE AS A VETERAN THAT I CAN BRING TO BUSINESS OWNERSHIP?

My military experience was in the Navy. I like to say the best preparation (half seriously) for being the father of twins was standing mid-watch (10pm2am) on the bridge of a ship and not killing anything. My point is that there are MANY experiences and skills you bring to the table NOT EVEN CONTEMPLATED by those with no military background.

I HAVE ZERO EXPERIENCE DOING X (ACCOUNTING, MARKETING, SALES, ETC)HOW IN THE WORLD CAN I BE A GOOD BUSINESS OWNER?

That’s partially correct –you need to have a plan. No bookkeeping experience? Hire a bookkeeper. Sales leave you tongue tied? The franchisor may offer sales training. Be honest - when you joined the military, did you know how to shoot a gun (or shoot it correctly)? My dad joined the Navy at 17 never having driven a car. And yet the Navy taught him to fly in less than 2 years. Which points to another

underappreciated experience veterans have–learning and using new skills effectively.

WHAT KIND OF BUSINESSES WANT ME TO BE A FRANCHISEE?

Let me turn the question around – what is the right

business for you and which concept is best equipped to meet your needs? Plenty of franchisors (and, let’s face it, employers) say they are “veteran friendly”. By the end of the discovery process you should be able to answer the

40 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE

following question: Does the franchisor just “talk the talk” or does he also “walk the walk”?

HOW CAN I FINANCE THIS?

There are the traditional financings methods (SBA loans, 401K rollovers, bank loans, etc.) but franchisors are also becoming more willing to invest in qualified veterans. There are options that can include working capitol financing, discounts on franchise fees, royalty holidays and even franchise purchase assistance. I even have one franchisor willing to experiment with a “Search Fund like” investment for exception candidates.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

That depends . . .Obviously, a pizza restaurant is a larger investment than a mobile pet grooming business. You are going to need some capital –but perhaps not as much as you think and certainly (if you finance your purchase) not the complete investment amount.

ISN’T IT RISKY?

When I was in the Navy, we used to have a meeting prior

to entering or leaving port to discuss the plan. What the weather forecast, what to do if we lost steering or propulsion (at any point), who had responsibility for what, etc, etc. My point here is we had a plan for anything. Again – as veterans, we are used to planning because planning is the best risk mitigation strategy. And there are many other strategies.

I HAVE A 9 TO 5 THAT PROVIDES A STEADY INCOME, NO WAY IN HECK MY SPOUSE WILL ALLOW ME TO GIVE UP ON THAT . . . WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

Have you considered a “side gig” or a business that offers a fully managed solution? Or do you have a trusted partner?

There are options out there that do not include leaving your current job.

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER BUSINESS OWNERSHIP?

My top 3 reasons

1. Control my destiny

2. Make real changes in the lives of others and

3. Make a decent income

Making Your Franchise Veteran Ready

How does suiting green consulting help organizations?

A company says we want to hire veterans. Great! What kind of veterans? And I get the thousand-yard stare. What do you mean? That’s where the intention comes into it. We show them how to target and attract that talent stream and onboard them effectively.

For example, in the military you’re hurt, you go to the doctor and don’t worry about paying for it. “How do I choose health benefits? Dental and vision is a separate thing?” We’ve never had to take care of that. That’s part of the onboarding piece. How are you showing them or explaining to them how to make sense of that?

Retired Army Sgt Matt Wood

experienced the challenges of transitioning to a civilian career after 21 years of activeduty service. Today he trains “veteran friendly” companies to become “veteran ready” through Boot Camp for Business Workshops and consulting for HR managers. We recently discussed how franchises can learn to prepare better opportunities for veterans in and beyond ownership roles.

A lot of times it’s letting the company know you don’t need to micromanage these people. Give them your intent as the leader and let them run with it. That’s hard for a lot of companies. You give them that intent and they’re going to come up with what may be out of the box ideas as opposed to someone who has only learned how to do something through a college class.

Franchises have long valued veterans for their ability to follow a system and lead an organization.

Veterans know how to take care of people. That’s one of the ways franchises can approach it. Say to them, “We give you an opportunity to continue to lead, continue to build teams, continue to train and develop” because 90% of the people I know leaving the military, you ask them, “What do you want to do?” “I want to get into operations management or project management,” and we don’t really know what that means on the outside, but for a franchise, that’s operations management. You are building and operating a system and running it, and that’s a huge appeal to a lot of the military community.

What is a way to connect with veterans franchises may be missing?

Target military spouses.

44 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE
What attracts a veteran into looking at franchises?

Obviously, they are going to have spouse coordination to get things started. Eventually that servicemember is going to leave the military, and if the spouse has developed a successful business as a franchise owner, now you’ve got the servicemember coming out and either coming on board to run one operation or say, “We were successful with this first one. Let’s open a second. Let’s do it again and open a third one or something.” That just makes a lot of sense to look at it from that perspective.

The skill bridge program is a surprisingly underutilized program for companies recruiting veterans. How can franchises use this program for roles other than franchise ownership? Say I own a franchise and want to do absentee ownership. I bring a SBP participant in and they shadow me for 6 months

while I train them how to run the operation. Six months later I say, “If you want it the job’s yours.” Now I’m paying you because you’re hired, and I’m on to my next unit, repeating the process.

BUT DURING THAT PERIOD THEY’RE BEING PAID BY THE MILITARY INSTEAD OF THE OWNER?

Yes. Because they’re still on active duty, Uncle Sam is the one paying them and their benefits. At the end of that period, they hang up their uniform, and they are fully out of the military. It’s up to them if they want to take the job or not, but “if I’ve done well and I like it and like the area, I’d be stupid not to take it. I’ve had 6 months to get a feel for the area and life on the outside, and my transition hasn’t been difficult

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

because I’ve had somebody in my corner supporting me.”

And they work for you full time?

While they are in the program they are full time with the company. They are a full time servicemember, but they are not showing up for their unit in the military at all during that period. I have a friend who was stationed in Hawaii, got into that program and went to work for Disney in Orlando for 6 months. At the end of the 6 months, “Here’s your full time role.” Boom. The program ended one day, and the very next day she was full time with Disney.

Sharif, his wife, Shama, and oldest daughter, Sedra, are enrolled in ESL classes two nights a week and one of his sons, 10-year-old Wesal, plays AYSO soccer. And when he’s at work, it should be mentioned, Sharif always has a carafe of delicious hot chai tea within arm’s reach, ready to pour a cup for any team member.

It's a wonderful ending to a dastardly beginning and none

of it would have been possible without the benevolence of many in the Southern California community – such as Pulliam and countless others, he is quick to mention - who have opened their arms to Afghan refugees as our country celebrates Veterans Day and all members of the United States Armed Forces.

Philanthropy is also at the forefront of the hundreds of locations across North America of Paul Davis Restoration, recognized as one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry,

whose teams are recognized as Difference Makers™, honoring daily the company’s mission to “deliver an experience of extraordinary care while serving people in their time of need.”

This past April, the International Institute of Los Angeles – which aids refugees, immigrants, and others – was requesting volunteers to assist with the large influx of Afghan refugees to Southern California. Pulliam’s parish –Holy Family Catholic Church in South Pasadena – assembled a volunteer group who hosted a welcome BBQ for the Sharif family in May. The group named itself “Melgari” which means “friend” in Pashto, one of the two official languages of Afghanistan.

Pulliam and his family attend the Holy Family Catholic Church and he said, “When I found out there was an Afghan family in need of help and support through my church, I needed to be involved. Having served there, I knew what these families had gone through to get out of Afghanistan. When I found out that the patriarch of this particular family had served in the Afghan National Army and had worked for the U.S. Department of State there in security I had an instant sense of camaraderie and was glad to be able to do my part as an ally.”

In addition to his seven years of service in elite U.S. Marine Corps units, the 43-year-old Pulliam’s background includes experience as a product developer, business operator and entrepreneur, who decided to join Paul Davis after a six-month process of vetting various franchise opportunities. Pulliam, who also earned an MBA from The UCLA Anderson School of Management, said he chose Paul Davis because “it was the best opportunity and a remarkable group of people aligned with my core values, which are still honor, courage, and commitment.”

Living in El Sereno with his wife, Brooke, and sons Scott (5) and Mick (3), Pulliam was already well-versed in the construction trades before becoming a Paul Davis franchise owner. His father was a noted local architect and urban planner who taught at the USC School of Architecture.

“I grew up on job sites,” said Pulliam, who before joining Paul Davis served as Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President for a full-service commercial construction contractor in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

With success in business and serving his country in five global deployments to some of the most dangerous places U.S. forces operated, perhaps Pulliam’s most meaningful achievement might be what he and others in his community have provided for Esmatullah and Shama Sharif and their seven children, ages 7 to 21.

After leaving the Afghan National Army in October 2014, Sharif worked for the U.S. Department of State as a security officer at Jalalabad airfield until Afghanistan’s fall to the Taliban in August 2021. Sharif and his family were among the fortunate to be airlifted from Hamid Karzai International Airport by U.S. Forces during Operation Allies Refuge and relocated to one of seven U.S. bases for processing before eventually resettling in a small apartment in Temple City, Calif.

“I certainly couldn’t have done this alone,” shared Pulliam. “My wife and the “Melgari” group at my church also went out of their way to make Sharif’s family feel welcome and helped them get settled.”

Things moved quickly from there. From May through

July the “Melgari” group helped the Sharifs complete Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applications and other necessities for life in their new country. And on July 13, 2022, Esmatullah Sharif was hired as Warehouse Manager of Paul Davis Restoration of Pasadena CA. Today, Sharif’s two oldest sons, Majed and Hewad, also have jobs of their own.

“Our stories are intertwined,” concluded Graham.” I realize now that it sounds like something out of a movie. Esmatullah and his family endured much in their journey from Afghanistan to a new life and a promising new start with Paul Davis, a company with rock solid values that mirror our own. Building my own team and

creating opportunities for my community were fundamental motivators compelling this entrepreneurial leap. I’m

humbled by Esmatullah on a daily basis and honored to have him on our team. I guess some things are just meant to be.

something else to do.

That something else was investing in a MY SALON SUITE franchise in 2014. With more than 200 locations across North America, MY SALON Suite franchises offer individual spaces for salon and beauty professionals. Those interested in becoming a franchisee must have a net worth of $1,500,000 and liquid assets of $500,000.

Jim and his wife currently have two MY SALON Suite locations open, one in Wilmington, DE and a second in Dover, DE. They plan to open a third location in Middleton, DE in four to five months.

For the couple, investing in a franchise like MY SALON Suite fit them well as they began to plan for retirement. MY SALON Suite is a much more handsoff franchise than most, which was what Jim and his wife were looking for.

“One advantage of MY SALON Suite is that you typically don’t need any employees, except maybe a property manager,” Jim said, adding that you don’t have to be there every day.

“Whether looking for a source of retirement income or whether you’re just starting out after leaving the military, franchising, in general, is a good option for veterans,” Jim said. “Franchisors value veterans because of the skills they bring to the table.”

Not only do veterans have the discipline and strong work ethic required to run their own business, but they also have a “mission accomplished” attitude. That is, they do what’s needed to ensure the business is successful. These are appealing traits to franchisors.

Jim also teaches a class at the Small Business Association called “Boots to Business,” and he talks to veterans about business ownership, often letting them know about the advantages of franchising, among which are the discounts that franchises often offer to veterans.

A franchise is also easy to replicate, and you can invest in as many franchises as you want.

Veterans also have an advantage because of their ability to follow a plan. Veterans are used to having

structure and franchises have a built-in system to follow. “We know how to follow a plan and see it through to success. Follow the plan and you will be successful,” shared Jim.

Investing in a franchise is also less risky because the franchise has already experienced the problems and made the mistakes that businesses often have starting from scratch. It’s like having a pilot that’s trained on a flight simulator–that pilot is less likely to crash because of extensive training.

Light Sauna is Ready to Partner with Veterans

President & Co-Founder of beem™ Light Sauna, Cynthia May, knows what it’s like to live as part of a military family. Her late father, Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Roland Wagner, spent 28 years in the Marine Corps where he flew a CH-46 Sea Knight Helicopter. Cynthia saw firsthand how the military builds and shapes

critical skills for operating a business. Throughout the many moves her family made, Cynthia learned flexibility and how to work with different types of people. Plus, living on a military family budget taught her that if she wanted something, she needed to work for it. As a result, Cynthia grew up with a sense of entrepreneuralism that eventually lead to the creation of beem™ Light Sauna and an appreciation and respect for veterans that motivated her and the beem™ Light Sauna team to offer a discount to veteran Franchisees.

beem™ Light Sauna is a new, innovative franchise opportunity that uses cutting-edge technology to provide a full-spectrum light therapy experience using light to extend the benefits of saunas to complete cellular revitalization that improves circulation, removes toxins from the body, and boosts immunity among many other benefits. Their services include:

• Infrared Light Therapy: Infrared light is the essential invisible light necessary for all living things to grow and

flourish; including people. This light can penetrate human tissue and infuse multiple health benefits like wound healing, skin renewal, pain reduction and reduced inflammation, while boosting the immune system and metabolism.

• Red Light Therapy:

On the light spectrum, red light is next to infrared light, but is unique because it is highly concentrated. Red light therapy allows people to experience a reduction of redness, scars, wrinkles, acne, and inflammation. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show that professional athletes and celebrities use this therapy to improve blood circulation, promote joint health, and reduce pain.

• Chromotherapy:

At beem™ Light Sauna, customers can select a color therapy that best aligns with their goals or mood. Chromotherapy supports healing and positive mental health benefits through exposure to specific colors. Color

while also being a business owner.”

Zaugg has been in the franchising industry for over 18 years, but this year he decided to make a big change. He took a leap by selling his prior fast food franchise and converting it into a Beans & Brews Coffeehouse! This decision came after he grew tired of seeing employee burnout within his previous franchise, and desired to run a business that aligned more closely with his values and lifestyle. After embarking on his search for a new business endeavor, Zaugg quickly realized that Beans & Brews was the perfect fit.

Earlier this year, Kelly Zaugg, a Navy Veteran who served in Iraq and multiple other locations overseas, joined the Beans & Brews family. He is currently a reserve sailor and works as a Navy Officer Recruiter. Between balancing his roles as a reservist and franchise owner, Zaugg found that the Beans & Brews franchise model fit seamlessly into his lifestyle.

“Beans & Brews is invested in

the success of its franchisees, and that is evident through their development of great set systems, which help the franchise run smoothly,” said Zaugg. “The Laramie family (founders of Beans & Brews) owns multiple locations so they understand the day-today operations and how to make effective changes for the brand. These set systems and hands-on management help make it so much easier for me to juggle being in the reserve

“The first thing I noticed about Beans & Brews was the intentional way proactive processes were put in place and how this training was passed on to ensure franchisees could create their own success,” said Zaugg. “I knew immediately after learning about the Beans & Brews management practices that this was the right brand to move forward with.”

Prior to entering franchising, Zaugg also worked as a police officer for 21 years and has always been very involved in

Beans & Brews provides veterans looking to become business owners a great opportunity to succeed.

Along with being a VetFran member, the brand also offers veterans a discounted franchisee free and wellestablished systems to ensure every veteran franchise owner is equipped with the tools they need to confidently and efficiently open their own business.

“Beans & Brews Coffeehouse is the perfect way for veterans to reestablish themselves in the community, be a part of a supportive brand and make a great living,” said Zaugg. “From construction, training and more, Beans & Brews helps prepare and guide every veteran franchise owner so that they can accomplish their entrepreneurial goals.”

Veterans make for fantastic Beans & Brews franchise owners because they have strong work ethics, leadership and teamwork skills and the ability to efficiently execute systems. The skills that veterans learn while in the military translate seamlessly into being a franchise owner. Beans & Brews is excited to offer veterans the opportunity

to join Team Beans and bring a delicious cup of coffee to their community.

One Veteran’s Journey to Achieving a Childhood Dream

Veteran Christopher Muir has been a Crushr Owner serving Northern New Jersey since 2021. “Crushing things has to be one of the funnest jobs I have ever had,” Chris said. “If there was a Crushr when I was 7 years old, I would have wanted to run the machine.”

A waste management company that uses proprietary technology contained in an iconic, eye-catching vehicle, Crushr saves clients money by compacting trash and reducing hauls. The simple business model also creates

the conditions for Owners to maximize profits. Since launching, Chris has crushed everything from construction waste to jars of peanut butter. Interestingly, Crushr wasn’t an option when Chris was first choosing his career path. Instead, he became a Boiler Technician Second Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, where he served from August 1988 to April 1993 on the USS Jesse L. Brown (FF-1089) and USS John F Kennedy (CV-67), which took him on a 5-month UNITAS Cruise around South America and a 6-month Med Cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, respectively. During that time, he learned a lot about things you would expect to learn on a Naval ship–boiler fuel, feed, steam and control systems–but he also encountered

many different personalities and learned how to interact and work with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Chris always had an entrepreneurial spirit but after completing service, he found himself locked into work on Wall Street for many years and it was difficult to justify giving up a steady paycheck that supported his family. In February of 2020, fate stepped in when he got news that his job would end in April. During the pandemicrelated lockdown, Wall Street opportunities were tougher to come by. Then, his brother contacted him about speaking with a franchise consultant and they began investigating franchise opportunities.

The brothers were initially attracted to Crushr because

of the simple business model and the endless demand for services. Crushr offers potential Owners a lowinvestment, high-reward opportunity with nearly unlimited customer potential. With Crushr, there is no brick and mortar building to maintain, and minimal employees needed, delivering a potential ROI few franchise concepts can rival. After meeting with the Crushr team, the brothers

were sold and started the process of becoming Owners. Chris says his experience has been really rewarding and he offers some advice for others: “When investigating franchises, make sure to do your due diligence. There are no shortcuts when deciding which franchise is right for you.”

Marine Corps Veteran Continues Serving Community Through Home Healthcare Business

Following that, he joined the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines, a part of the 7th Marine Division. That’s when Alex was deployed with Kilo Company to Afghanistan. Upon separation from active duty, Alex joined the U.S. Marine Corps Infantry Reserves in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. He served as a platoon sergeant and platoon commander.

Alex. “I wanted the Marine who lost his home in a fire to know that as soldiers, we are by his side whether we’re on the battlefield or at home. Today, I do the same thing when talking to our clients. I am helping them live the life they want despite any health obstacles.”

Marine Corps veteran Alex Caudill has always felt called to provide for others. First at the age of 17, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Infantry, and now as the owner of several A Place At Home locations. A Place At Home is an innovative senior-focused care franchise that helps the elderly live a comfortable and independent life at home.

From 2009 to 2010, Alex served on the White House Presidential Detail under the Barack Obama Administration.

Alex always puts his fellow Marines first. In the Reserves, Alex organized a fundraiser for another Marine that lost their home in a fire, raising $15,000. Now, as a business owner, he is still helping other veterans by being one of the largest service providers of Phoenix VA non-skilled care. A Place At Home – Scottsdale serves 174 veteran seniors in his community. But it doesn’t stop there. He provides veterans a place to work, as 60% of his office staff are Marine veterans.

“The military teaches you values of duty, service, and self-sacrifice. I have lived out those standards daily, whether I’m running my business or serving my country,” says

A Place At Home is not like any other senior home care company. They provide in-home care, coordinate care, help find new living arrangements and help facilities with staffing solutions. senior care. He wanted to make a difference for the elderly population. Since then, he has expanded to more locations in Arizona, including Chandler/Gilbert and Sun City West/Surprise.

“A Place At Home is more than just a business to me. It’s a way of life. It aligns with the values ingrained in me from the Marines. I can serve not only the communities around me but also Veterans,” says Alex.

Throughout Alex’s military career, he received many awards. They included the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Valor, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal x2, and Combat Action Ribbon. He also received the

Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Beyond his 10 years of service, he has held several leadership positions in the health industry. They included leadership roles in sales, operations, and business development. Those positions gave him extensive experience in managing healthcare services.

Alex enjoys connecting and employing senior care providers who believe in A Place At Home’s “We are CARE” philosophy. That stands for compassionate, accountable, respectful, and ethical. His dedication to providing the most compassionate and professional senior care when families need it most makes him a leader within the franchise.

“There are days we arrive at the office before the sun is up and work well into the night. Yet, we can rest easy when we leave due to our understanding of what we accomplish daily,” says Alex. “We work to provide compassionate caregivers

with the opportunity to care for those who can no longer care for themselves. Every day the team at A Place At Home makes a difference in the lives of so many.”

A Place At Home provides inhome care services, including licensed companions and personal care, medication administration, care coordination, and senior living alternative services. The “We are CARE” philosophy is integrated into each one of those services. The brand is known for its franchisee support and training, which has seen many senior care entrepreneurs successfully navigate the business landscape.

Putting Military Experience to Use in Restaurant Operations

After serving on the frontlines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Army veteran Brandon Buerk returned home to help grow his family’s breakfast franchise brand, Scramblers, into a household name.

seem like the most natural transition, it made perfect sense for his skill set.

Sure, the Ohio native had worked in his family’s restaurant as a teenager. But after six years in the US Army, he figured a natural fit following his service would be in a role such as the FBI or Secret Service. Then, his brother made an offer.

Shain Buerk, along with their father Phillip, opened their first restaurant in 1989. Scramblers, now a restaurant franchise serving breakfast and lunch favorites, has grown to more than two dozen locations across Ohio and Michigan. The journey into franchising came just around the time Brandon had to decide on a new career path. To get his younger brother on board, Shain offered both Brandon and their cousin, Tim Trautman, an enticing partnership deal.

“I honestly didn’t want to

work for Shain, but it was a great opportunity to grow our family’s business,” said Brandon. “I love the brand. I love the opportunities. I love the design and the concept, and frankly, I knew I would fit well. He offered me the chance to become an equity partner in business, so I decided to come home to Scramblers.”

Nearly two decades later, Buerk is the brand’s Vice President of Operations. His experience in the military, which included serving on the frontlines of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, taught him how to create successful leaders and manage people. He says that while it doesn’t

“The transition coming home after the war was difficult. That was a hard time in my life and it’s a hard time to think back on,” said Buerk, who left the military as a Captain in 2004. “I was trained to lead soldiers to war. When that mission had been accomplished and it was time to come home, Scramblers became my new mission. I was trained to do a job that actually translated very well into what I do now.”

POISED FOR EXPANSION

Initially, Buerk’s operations role was concentrated on developing processes and procedures to streamline their labor and help the restaurants run smoothly.

When Scramblers began its expansion through franchising, those operations became even more important.

One of Buerk’s biggest lessons learned was that the key to being a successful manager is hiring the right people, focusing on training,

PURSUING A CAREER IN FOOD SERVICE WAS NEVER PART OF BRANDON BUERK’S ORIGINAL PLAN.

and putting systems in place to get the job done.

“The military taught me that the mission is the number one most important thing, and our training and strategy has to serve that purpose,” Buerk said. “Our mission at Scramblers is to take care of our guests and to impress our guests with the experience they’ve come to expect. Staff needs to believe in that mission, and we have to help our owners and managers to that end.”

Through franchising, Scramblers has grown to 26 units throughout Ohio and Michigan. The brand is now poised to move beyond the Midwest with five new restaurants in development in the Jacksonville, Florida area. Scramblers also has franchise territories available across the eastern half of the United States.

To offset rising food costs, many Americans are trimming their budgets and eating more meals at home. However, the demand for breakfast continues to flourish. Breakfast restaurant traffic grew by 4%

in August compared to the same month a year ago. The U.S. breakfast restaurant and diners industry is forecast to grow by 9.8% this year, hitting $11.1 billion, according to IBISWorld, an industry research provider.

“We've been successful because every one of our employees plays an important role in our restaurants, and we make sure they feel their value," Buerk said. “We’re a tight-knit family, and we are more than just silk operations and flipping eggs.”

SCRAMBLERS OFFERS

A PATH FORWARD

Buerk says both his military service and his career with Scramblers have given him everything he loves today. He has five teenaged children

with his wife Nadiya, whom he met in a post-graduate military leadership course. Scramblers, now the bulk of his professional experience, offers him a chance to not only provide for his family but to serve as a leader for others who want to improve their lives in entrepreneurship.

“When we developed the franchise model, I really wanted to make sure we had clearly defined systems in place that would help every new franchisee,” he said. “I’m so excited about the potential of the Scramblers brand. We have everything in a place now where we can bring in a new owner and say, ‘If you follow the way we do it, we’re confident it’ll be successful for you.’”

MORE ABOUT BRANDON BUERK

Brandon Buerk is Corporate Vice President of Scramblers, in charge of restaurant operations. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan with the US Army, Brandon returned to the company where he worked as a young man and is a steady and reliable presence on the executive franchise team.

who is now a franchise coach reached out to him about Window Hero, he was attracted initially to the low financial barrier to entry. However, it was the leadership that convinced him to invest.

“Tyler Kirk, President/Founder of Window Hero and Jeff Dudan, CEO of Homefront Brands, are two incredible people and leaders,” Ryan said. “When I talked to current Franchise Owners I knew that Tyler hadn’t built just a business; he built a tribe of like-minded people that are invested in each other.”

Window Hero Owner Ryan Jackson had a prestigious military career before deciding to invest in a Window Hero location earlier this year. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1998 right after high school where he was selected to be an Electronic Technician (Nuclear). Two years later, he was selected for an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy where he majored in Ocean Engineering and played on the rugby team. After graduating

in 2004, he received orders to attend flight training as a Naval Flight Officer in Pensacola, Fla., before being selected to serve as a Weapons System Officer in the F/A18F Super Hornet. For those without a military background, he clarifies: “When people don’t understand what that means, I tell them ‘I was Goose in TopGun’ and they usually get it.”

What Ryan misses most about the military is the camaraderie. When another Naval Academy graduate

Window Hero specializes in delivering exterior window cleaning, power washing, gutter cleaning, and gutter guard installation services with a customer-first approach. When investing, Window Hero Owners get simple service lines that offer year-round revenue, no large initial investments in real estate or expensive equipment, high customer satisfaction and retention, and a post-launch plan for success. Window Hero is also a part of Homefront Brands so Owners benefit from a leadership team of franchising experts, ensuring they are fully supported as they build their businesses.

For other veterans considering investing in a franchise, Ryan offers this advice: “Believe in yourself and that you are worthy and skilled enough to own a business. When you are evaluating options, look for the one that feels like the tribe you lost. There are plenty of franchisors who only provide you a name to use without the support and education you need to thrive rather than barely survive in the civilian world.”

It’s no surprise that Ryan found a place that felt like home at one of the Homefront Brands. Rhett Benner, Chief Development Officer at Homefront Brands, comes from a military background himself, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Telecommunications Specialist from August 1991 to April 1996. During that time, he served in a variety of roles and locations throughout the world, including being stationed at a Search and Rescue Station in Cape Hatteras, N.C.; graduating from Telecommunications Training in Petaluma, Calif.; serving onboard the USCGC Harriet Lane based in Portsmouth, Va.; and being

deployed on a variety of patrols in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, South America, and Alaska. Rhett received multiple accommodations before being Honorably Discharged.

“As a veteran myself, I know that the military instills an incredible work ethic and helps anyone who serves to develop many skills that are useful in business,” said Rhett. “I would encourage any veterans who have an interest in business ownership to look at franchise opportunities with one of the Homefront Brands. Each opportunity not only offers all the tools needed to excel, but Homefront Brands also provides a supportive community of guiding experts that create the right environment for success.”

Rhett calls serving in the Coast Guard “one of the best decisions” he made because it prepared him to return to college and juggle a heavy course load while also working part time. After his time in the military, Rhett has worked in leadership and development roles for some of the biggest and most recognized companies in the world, laying the foundation for his work with Homefront Brands. He says of his experience: “To have the opportunity to inspire and make an impact with our current and new franchisees and our team is what excites me each day at Homefront Brands.”

HomeFront Brands encompasses several value-driven property service franchise opportunities, including Window Hero, Temporary Wall Systems and The Designery. Each of these brands offers a Veteran Discount of $5,000 off the initial franchise fee. For more information, email WindowHero@frandev.co.

After Two-Decade Air Force Career, Veteran is Well-Prepared To Run His Floor Coverings International Franchise

Steven Guillen already has plenty of experience for his new career. He just has to pare down operations, which shouldn’t be much of an issue, since the 45-year-old

is accustomed to operating on a large scale… and that’s no exaggeration. Guillen is the owner of Floor Coverings International of Middle Georgia and serves customers in Macon, Forsyth, Locust

Saudi Arabia, while also living in Europe. Guillen also worked for the U.S. government in foreign military sales, selling billions of dollars in military aircraft, weapons, boats, and military training to other countries.

Veterans such as Guillen represent 14 percent of U.S. franchisees, and they prove a good fit for the franchise model because veterans possess strong leadership skills and a thorough understanding of being part of a team. Franchises also operate on proven systems and defined procedures and the military training that veterans go through allows them to easily adapt to a system and find success in franchising.

“I decided I wanted a different pace. I wanted to be my own boss and establish my own culture and management style within a business… and treat people how I wanted to be treated,” Guillen said. “I want to be the boss that folks want to work hard for. I liked the Floor Coverings International business model. I did my research and Floor Coverings International was the most supportive and offered the best training.”

In Floor Coverings International, Guillen found a company that has tripled in size since 2005 by putting

a laser focus on consumer buying habits and expressed desires, its impressive operating model, growth ability, marketing, advertising, and merchandising. Floor Coverings International further separates itself from the competition through its customer experience, made up of several simple and integrated steps that exceed customers’ expectations. For this, Floor Coverings International was given the Innovation Award for Customer Response from Franchise Update Media in 2020, and the same award again in 2021 for Best Use of Technology. Franchise Update is the benchmark publication and conference entity that is the Gold Standard of Franchising.

With the home improvement industry booming, the flooring market is also keeping pace. The global flooring market was estimated to reach $409 billion in 2021, according to Grand View Research. The market is expected to grow at an annual rate of more than six percent through 2028, reaching overall sales of $621 billion.

“I am very pleased with the support I have received from the franchisor,” said Guillen “and the launch in my market they assisted in. I never

thought flooring would excite me but when I look at what we have available I think ‘wow’ who knew there were so many beautiful and durable flooring options available now?”

A Clear Choice for Life After Military Service

Fibrenew checked all the boxes for this U.S. Army Veteran and his family

Although Benjamin never aspired to own a vinyl and leather repair franchise, Fibrenew’s opportunity checked all the boxes for him as an ideal business. Among them were scalability, low start-up costs, and a flexible schedule. “To be honest, the thought of vinyl and leather repair didn’t seem very interesting, but as I spoke to Fibrenew franchisees, I realized that it was an opportunity to be part of something really special,” he says.

After serving in the military for 26 years, Benjamin Burt knew the value of teamwork and a collaborative atmosphere. He wanted to have the same type of environment in his next step. In choosing a second career and franchise business, Fibrenew’s corporate culture was the deciding factor for him.

The company’s culture was especially attractive for Benjamin. “Franchisees work collaboratively. They give each other ideas for potential business as well as strategies for techniques. The culture is inclusive and helpful, not competitive. Everyone shares their knowledge,” he says.

RESILIENT BUSINESS

Benjamin was extremely impressed with the company’s

resilience through Covid. “Because of the endless applications for business, franchisees didn’t have a problem getting work during the shutdown periods. Some pivoted to different types of jobs or clients,” he says. “While other local businesses were struggling through the pandemic, Fibrenew franchisees had steady work.” Benjamin has a number of commercial clients including camping and RV dealerships as well as medical offices, plus residential clients who find him organically. “The number of industries and types of clients you could work with is really mind-blowing,” he says. Although Benjamin has only been operating his Fayetteville, North Carolina location for a short time (he officially opened for business May 1, 2021), he already feels like he is part of something bigger.

well supported,” he says. From the start, he was impressed with the systems and training Fibrenew provided, two items he values as a former Army Sergeant.

Since opening for business, Benjamin has worked as the owner/operator and has enlisted his wife Dawn for help. Dawn is an elementary school principal who has been working with their social media marketing, in her free time.

A self-described tinkerer,

Benjamin enjoys the handson work, but eventually plans to scale the business by hiring a manager and several technicians and take on more of a semi-absentee ownership role. He is well on the way and has already hit the breakeven point of his investment — three months ahead of schedule. “This business has already paid for itself in one month. I couldn’t be more pleased,” he says. “It’s great that you can generate revenue immediately and stay busy at

a desirable pace.” Fibrenew’s digital marketing initiatives pushed business my way immediately,” he says.

Because Covid has shut down the Canadian borders, Benjamin hasn’t met the corporate team in person yet, but he is looking forward to the company’s semiannual get-togethers in Canada. “I can’t wait,” he says. “It will be like a family reunion.”

Roger Turnbow Finds Post Military Success with IT Business

“I spent 20 years in the Air Force, and the experience really helps prepare you to be a leader and excel at it,” he said.

Turnbow was initially drawn to franchising, and NerdsToGo®, which provides IT solutions for business and home, ended up being the perfect fit with his experience working in IT in the Air Force. He provided client support and IT project management to help implement new systems, providing him with invaluable experience for the NerdsToGo business model. Moreover, he liked that NerdsToGo helps small to medium-sized businesses, typically an underserved area for IT.

career in the Air Force taught Turnbow skills that translate well to franchise ownership, such as understanding how teams operate and gaining hands-on skills.

The initial investment for a NerdsToGo franchise is approximate $146,200 –$217,050, including a $49,750 franchise fee. Ideal candidates have a net worth of $300,000, of which $80K is liquid.

Additionally, NerdsToGo offers a special incentive for veterans and first responders, including paramedics, emergency medical technicians, police officers, sheriffs, and firefighters, including a 50% reduction on the franchise fee.

For Roger Turnbow, running a business felt like a natural next step after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a Master Sergeant and then worked as a civilian for the Department of Defense before deciding to open a franchise with his business partners, Dione and Kanisha Robertson and his wife, Michelle, all Air Force veterans as well.

FRANCHISING PROVIDES OWNERS WITH A BLUEPRINT AND STRUCTURE FOR SUCCESS THAT TURNBOW FEELS BENEFITS VETERANS USED TO THE STRUCTURE OF THE MILITARY.

Navy Veteran Excels as FASTSIGNS Business Owner

Navy veteran Daniel Nichols doesn’t mind the sometimes long hours he spends at his FASTSIGNS center in The Woodlands, TX. “The Navy taught me not to be afraid of long hours. Ten- to twelvehour workdays were not unusual at all in the Navy.”

Nichols spent eight years serving in the Navy, with two years of active duty, and six years in the reserves. After the Navy, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill took some classes in I.T. and worked various jobs in that field before considering going into business for himself. At one of his IT jobs, he met the person who would eventually purchase FASTSIGNS ® of Conroe, TX. This meeting eventually led Nichols to invest in a franchise of his own, and he opened his center on Feb. 17, 2009.

His military experience gave him more than just an appreciation of sometimes long workdays; it’s given him the discipline to manage a business on his own. Discipline is one trait franchises value in their franchisees, and franchise ownership can work in a veteran’s favor because of that discipline. His military service also

gave him excellent problemsolving skills and the ability to look for solutions to those problems.

FASTSIGNS International has a special Veteran Franchise Program with many benefits, including a period of reduced royalties and a discounted initial franchise fee of 50%, along with flexible location options, tax benefits, and financing options. These services are also available for first responders such as police, firefighters and emergency services personnel.

More information about the FASTSIGNS franchise opportunity is available by contacting Mark Jameson at mark.jameson@ propelledbrands.com or 214-346-5679.

AvenueWest Was the Vehicle That Allowed Us to Make Our Dreams Come True: Wayne and Cindy Minks, AvenueWest Franchise Owners, Colorado Springs

together and mapped out what we want our life together to look like. We set our goals and began searching for ways to achieve them. When you have your “why”, the “how” will come.

Ienlisted in the military

right out of highschool and I spent my military career as an engineer working on and building mobile bridges for waterways. My military career ended with a medical discharge and I am now a disabled army veteran. It was then Cindy and I put our heads

Education is very important to us. Neither of us went to college – it was right out of highschool and into the military I went. I wasn’t interested in school, I wanted to own my own business; but like anything, we had to educate ourselves. We read every book, listened to speakers, attended conferences – if it helped make us better business people, we did it.

One of our friends was very successful building a business with Amway, so we signed up as independent business owners to see what it was about. Together we attended their conferences and built mentoring relationships that

allowed us to really grow our entrepreneurial skills. Our goal was not to build an Amway business, but to be around professional entrepreneurs, because that’s what we are –entrepreneurs.

In 1993 we sold our mechanic business in St. Louis and moved to Colorado Springs where Wayne’s brother was living at the time. We invested our money from the sale of our mechanic business into Rocky Mountain Internet. It was around that time that we adopted our daughter. Cindy began looking for a job that allowed her to have more flexibility and spend time at home with her daughter. A good friend of ours suggested that Cindy look into real estate and in 1999 Cindy was a licensed realtor. Both Cindy and myselfI are licensed realtors. I got licensed in 2004 but

not with the goal of selling real estate, I just wanted to educate myself. Cindy spent the first part of her real estate career working for Coldwell Banker’s real estate department as a part of the real estate relocation team. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for us to realize that Cindy’s hard work was making other people rich.

Around 2008 – the market dips. It was around that time that Cindy responded to an ad in the local paper taken out by AvenueWest. Cindy applied and got the job! Back then, AvenueWest was not a franchise, but a corporate housing provider. That’s when we met Angela. When AvenueWest was looking to franchise, we knew we wanted in as AvenueWest’s very first franchise owners. There was

one obstacle – we needed ten thousand dollars in cash to buy into an AvenueWest Franchise, which we did not have. Cindy was still working as a realtor and the local real estate office picked 10 houses, and the realtors who listed and sold the houses would be entered into a drawing for, believe it or not, a ten thousand dollar prize. We were on our way to the award ceremony, not knowing who the winner of the prize would be, arguing about how in the

to push ourselves, but what did we know about owning corporate housing property?

We knew we wanted to be real estate investors; we knew that everything we had been doing was preparing us for this; and we knew we needed to continue to educate ourselves. It was a process. We have

world we were going to come up with ten thousand dollars in cash. Low and beholdCindy won! It was then we knew that we were supposed to buy into the AvenueWest as the first AvenueWest Franchise Owners. It was where we were supposed to be.

We were the guinea pigs. As the first franchise owners, there was no onboarding process in place yet. Our training was a lot of “go get ‘em tiger”s and we were figuring it out as we went. Going from employees of AvenueWest to actual AvenueWest franchise owners was very overwhelming, difficult, and even scary at times. Oftentimes, in order to get to the next level, we have

always been entrepreneurial, but we haven’t always known how to be entrepreneurial. We invested in educating ourselves in finances and real estate mortgages, we read A LOT of books, anything and everything we can find on real estate investing. You know, they really trusted us. To this day we are still so grateful that AvenueWest took a chance on us.

Today, we have exceeded our goals. AvenueWest has afforded us the opportunity to follow our dreams and to reach the goals we set for our family over 30 years ago. I would even go so far as to say that AvenueWest helped us see opportunities in properties that we would have otherwise overlooked.

Cindy and I own 11 properties, five of which we were able to purchase from AvenueWest program homeowners in a short-sale and always at marketvalue. They did not have to foreclose on their properties and, for us, it was very low risk because we knew what the rental return was. It was a win-win for everyone involved. It was a no brainer!

For our family, AvenueWest is our legacy. Our daughter works with us and AvenueWest has afforded her the opportunity to learn about real estate and to learn our business. Our goal is to one day pass our franchise down to our daughter, and then for her to pass it on to our granddaughter.

AvenueWest is not only the vehicle that made our dreams come true, but it has allowed us to continue to dream bigger than we ever thought possible. My biggest regret is that I wish we’d dreamed bigger, had we known what AvenueWest was going to make possible for us.

I want to give you some advice. The key is – you have

to know where you want to go. We had a pretty clear vision of where we wanted to arrive. Now that we are 60 years old, we are sharpening our vision for our end-game. You have to map out exactly how you want to live, what type of income you want to have, and what you want your life to look like. After you set clear goals, it’s a matter of plugging in the right vehicle, and for us, that was AvenueWest.

PatchMaster’s FranchiseFirst Approach is a Great Fit for Veterans

With more than a dozen Veteranowned locations nationwide, PatchMaster knows first-hand that experience gained during military service are a great fit for running a successful business. Combining those skills with PatchMaster’s Franchise-first model empowers Veterans to learn a trade, run their own franchise business and find financial and personal independence in the civilian workforce.

“At PatchMaster, we recognize the immense sacrifices Veterans have made for our country, and we are here to fully support our military professionals as they transition into civilian life,” said PatchMaster President & CEO Paul Ferrara. “We know each owner has the skills to lead in diverse environments and achieve desired outcomes. These proven leadership skills, coupled with the ability to take direction, will make them excellent franchise owners.”

Dave Biggerstaff, PatchMaster serving Charlotte, N.C., is a great example of how Veterans can find success with PatchMaster. Dave served in the U.S. Army from 1972-1978, where he was an Armor officer and attained the rank of Captain. Throughout his various company-grade positions as tank platoon

leader, recon platoon leader, company executive officer and tank company commander, he learned many leadership skills which still serve him today.

Dave wants other Veterans to know that investing in a franchise is a chance to own a business without spending years developing the experience necessary to do it on your own. He notes that PatchMaster provides training to quickly set Owners on the path to success and provides an easy way to learn through shared experiences with others. He also says that corporate support is friendly and constructive but allows for flexibility in running the business.

PatchMaster proudly offers Veterans 50 percent off royalty fees for the first 12 months of business, as well as extensive technical and business training at corporate headquarters in New Jersey. However, as Dave notes, it’s just a nice bonus. The real reason Veterans

should consider PatchMaster is because it’s a great opportunity.

“I appreciate PatchMaster for offering a discount towards our Veterans, but it did not influence my decision; I’d recommend it regardless,” said Dave. “With PatchMaster, I am building a business that will outlast me. It is a

way I can build a systemsbased company that provides satisfying work for a number of employees and an income stream for me that will last through my retirement years.”

Educating and Training Veterans in Exploring Franchise Business Options

Iwas recently introduced to an organization called Warrior Rising, which is a non-profit business whose primary focus is on educating and supporting Veterans in pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities. Warrior Rising is led by experienced Veterans and their primary goals is to

help create “Veteranpreneurs”. Recently Warrior Rising asked me if I would be willing to join their organization so I could assist Veterans in exploring franchise options as a business ownership option.

VETERANS ISSUE

Warrior Rising was founded by Jason Van Camp, retired Green Beret combat veteran with a desire to see his teammates succeed. Since 2015 Warrior Rising (www.WarriorRising.org) has grown from a regional to a national organization with a robust outreach assisting more than 3500 veterans annually. Warrior Rising has developed sophisticated programs that leverage remote learning, built a network of mentors and coaches, and has awarded grants that will result in creating one hundred veteranowned businesses valued at more than $1 million by 2024.

Warrior Rising has long had as its primary objective to restore purpose to those that served honorably and to reignite the fire established during their service. Where most go wrong in trying to help is their vision and focus: It's not about just teaching a veteran about business. That can be done

in a business school, using the G.I. Bill. Warrior Rising has a unique program that shepherds veterans through its proprietary Warrior Academy®, coaching and mentoring sessions, its VETtoCEO™ accelerator, special topic webinars featuring keynotes by people in industry (including franchisor speakers talking about opportunities), not to mention its Veteran Business Showers™

Its program is focused on shaping confidence in veterans' abilities to sell their ideas to potential investors, partners, vendors, and other key stakeholders necessary to help them grow. At a typical Veteran Business Shower, between 15 and 20 veteran businesses who have been through our program of instruction and mentorship receive a laptop computer, custom business suit, website/ SEO development, and

professional headshots/videos to help them promote their businesses. Most importantly though, they have the opportunity to compete in a pitch competition where they can receive a grant of up to $20,000 to help kickstart their business. That is well within range of many initial franchise buy-in fees.

Most importantly about the connection between Warrior Rising, its training and the veterans that go through its business instruction and acceleration program, Warrior Rising is in it with the veterans for the long haul, they are not a "once and done" organization. This is not a point that is lost on veterans who highly value military-forged relationships and bonds of team that they recognized and relied upon during their service.

Warrior Rising is expanding its program to assist

Veterans in educating them on opportunities in the franchise industry. Veterans are well-suited for franchise opportunities. Standard operating procedures, consistency, and adhering to directions is something that is critical, especially for combat missions. Imagine all of that coupled to an

incredible work ethic, risk tolerance, agility, resilience, leadership, resourcefulness, and determination necessary to forge through standing up a business as an entrepreneur. Franchises, it would seem, are perfectly suited then as a match to those talents and skills.

Franchises generally have lower start-up costs and can bring in revenue fairly quickly with immediate corporate branding support and training. Franchisees are trained both in the practical aspects of the business as well as receiving management training. This kind of support is expensive and rare for entrepreneurs forming their own small business. It is often expensive for the franchisors themselves to provide such training programs. It’s not always easy to reach the level of understanding necessary for a new franchise owner to hit the ground running. In particular, in the case of veteran entrepreneurs, the

key is having someone who understands and can speak to a military mindset and therefore can create a bridge between that thinking and operational business thinking

In short, Warrior Rising recreates the most revered parts of military service, outside of their military service. By doing so, it lifts their spirit. When you lift someone's spirit, you ignite passion. When you ignite passion, you create a force. While the concept seems common, the unique approach Warrior Rising has for carrying it out gives them belief and makes them feel like they're part of a team again, that what they are doing MATTERS. And their results show that they are on to something.

Not only has Warrior Rising seen dozens of “graduates” from its program reach six figure revenue generation within months after completing the program, many are seeing seven figure revenue numbers within a year. That is precisely the type of passion franchisors want in their franchisees. When you have franchisees responsible for developing and sustaining their own business, you create motivation that results in

lean growth, one of the best benefits of franchising for franchisors.

The Warrior Rising team listens to veterans and provides them exactly what they need. Warrior Rising doesn’t give a veteran one good day… they give veterans the opportunity to earn their success and have one great life.

For more information, please contact Warrior Rising by email: info@WarriorRising.org.

NOT CLEAR YET

Medical Cannabis And PTSD

My entrepreneurial and public service career has spanned almost 4 decades from my time in the US Air Force and then my career as a Fire Lieutenant for the past 20+ years. When people think of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), they often think of veterans but first responders also have a

high number of cases due to the nature of the work we do. While our armed forces develop PTSD at a higher rate than others, PTSD is real and is a national crisis that we need to think about.

PTSD is a mental health condition that affects millions of Americans. The only ‘requirement’ for an individual to get PTSD is exposure to a

traumatic event. 6% of the population is living with PTSD and 1 in 3 veterans suffer from this. PTSD is defined as; a debilitating stressor induced mental illness resulting from changes in the brain that developed from exposure to a life-threatening or traumatic event. Changes in the brain cause an inability to inhibit fear.

112 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE

Individuals with PTSD experience fear and anxiety in both similar scenarios as the original event but also in completely different scenarios that trigger the brain to reexperience the original event. Re-experiencing trauma then puts the patient into a cycle of panic, fear and anxiety again which inevitably impacts the individual’s life and overall well being.

Prior to diagnosis and treatment, individuals with this mental health disorder often struggle to get through daily life and experience anxiety, depression and, at times, extreme traumatic memories. Treatment for many PTSD patients is therapy often alongside a cocktail of prescribed medications.

For decades, individuals with PTSD have recounted how cannabis has helped with some of the symptoms of PTSD. In the past decade, more research has been done on cannabis and PTSD and the results have shown great promise.

CAN CANNABIS HELP TREAT PTSD?

Yes, in many cases. From observational studies and anecdotal evidence we know that cannabis, both CBD and THC, may help patients improve PTSD symptoms. Research has shown that we have an internal system called the Endocannabinoid system which helps the regulation

of mood, anxiety and extinction of fear learning. The endocannabinoid system uses cannabinoids to help balance and control emotions.

A legitimate and potential cause of PTSD is that the condition stems from a problem with one of our bodies’ own internal cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) called Anandamide. Anandamide is also known as the bliss molecule because it can help with positive emotions. External cannabinoids, in this case from cannabis, can help stimulate the same receptors as Anandamide resulting in fear and anxiety decreasing, mood lifting and relief from hyper-arousal and hyperstimulation and intrusive memories.

CAN CBD OR CBD OIL TREAT PTSD?

CBD and CBD oil can help with some of the symptoms of PTSD. CBD, without THC, can help by reducing anxiety, disrupt fear memories and help REM sleep. CBD works by interacting indirectly with the CB2, dopamine and serotonin receptors.

CBD doesn’t actually increase serotonin or dopamine. It is a regulator that helps your body use chemicals that are there more efficiently or break chemicals down more slowly. Through interaction with certain brain pleasure centers, in particular

the area that stimulates anandamide, scientists believe that CBD helps with serotonin and dopamine production and regulation.

CAN THC HELP TREAT PTSD?

Yes, THC can help treat symptoms of PTSD. Anandamide is an internal cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) that helps send signals throughout the brain and body. It’s also known as the bliss molecule.

Anandamide affects areas of the brain that influence concentration, coordination, memory, pleasure and more.

While there may be side effects for cannabis and CBD and the formal medical cannabis research is still in its infancy, even though cannabis has been used as medicine for thousands of years. Most of the research has happened in the last 20 years.

While this is all great information, it’s not enough for doctors and regulators to trust in the benefits of cannabis. Researchers will need to continue working with cannabis and patients can help by looking into clinical trials for their conditions.

Joe Griffiths spent his career in the US Air Force and then as a First Responder in the Fire Department. He has owned two different CBD companies and is considered one of the pioneers of CBD franchising. His national prominence led him to a leadership in a vertically integrated CBD company where he onboarded over 225 stores and helped that company achieve ranking in Entrepreneurs Franchise 500 and #1 in their industry. Today he speaks to Veterans and First Responders on entrepreneurship and how to grow in their careers after their service.

U.S. Army Veteran Finds Success as CCI Franchisee

U.S. Army Veteran Patrick German found his military training and experience helped him start and operate a successful Creative Colors International franchise.

Time spent in the military comes with a lot of lessons learned and skills acquired, which servicemen and servicewomen find useful in civilian lives as well. Such

is the case for German, a CCI franchisee. German’s professional life has been dedicated to supporting others, both his country and his family. He joined the U.S. Army in 1987, serving for two years of active duty at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. Shortly after, he decided that to better support his family he’d pursue a career outside the military. Using the G.I Bill, German paid

for an education in computer programming.

“I think everybody should go through some type of military experience,” German said. “You’re more focused on discipline and it helps you grow up quicker. For me, going through the Army allowed me to be more zeroed in when I started taking classes; you take things in your life more seriously. If your path

is college, it absolutely inspires you to be more proactive and sincere with your studies.”

German spent 23 years as a computer programmer. He spent 18 of those years working at JPMorgan Chase Bank. However, with fatigue settling in in his career he knew he needed something different. German wanted a change of pace, and business ownership looked appealing to him. What’s more, his son-inlaw was also looking for a new career.

“I really was kind of burned out and I was looking for something that I could pass along to my son-in-law, Casey,” German said. “I felt like CCI was a great opportunity to not only be my own boss, but also have a sustainable business that would be there for him when he’s ready to take over.”

German became a CCI franchisee in 2016, opening his first location in Pinellas County, Florida. German

took to the business quickly, and in just two years saw his operation grow. In 2018, the owner of the CCI location in Hillsborough County, Florida sold his business to German. Today, German’s CCI business serves the entire Greater Tampa Bay area.

German isn’t the only military veteran that’s used his military experience to find success with CCI. U.S. Air Force Veteran Micke McNairy served for 21 years, after which he opened a CCI franchise in Denver, Colo. U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Jeremy Weber served for four years before opening his own CCI business in west Michigan in 2015. As each of them has found, their training and experience serving in their respective branches of the military has proven applicable to their civilian careers, using leadership, management, organization, and self-motivation to succeed in establishing and growing their own businesses.

Best Franchise Opportunities for Veterans

Running a franchise is an excellent opportunity for aspiring business owners and is particularly advantageous for veterans. Grit, determination, and leadership ability are all characteristics of both entrepreneurs and former service members. In fact, according to research, while veterans make up only 7% of the country’s population, they account for 14% of franchisees in the US.

The foundations of military service and franchising share similar building blocks. Disciplined, hardworking, and detail-oriented veterans often make great small business owners because they have excellent experience in operations and working within a system to follow and execute a plan for success. With their unique skill set, veterans have the ability to enter and succeed in industries in which they have no prior experience. What industries are worth a

look? The growth in the home services industry in recent years makes that an area well worth consideration from veterans seeking a new opportunity.

Best Home Service Franchise Opportunities For Veterans

With low startup costs, low overhead, and a high degree of flexibility, home services franchises like those Neighborly® offers are among the best franchise opportunities for veterans. Not only are home services almost always in high

demand, but these services are also recession resilient. There are many different options within the home services industry, and the nature of the work many perform has similarities to the capabilities that veterans cultivate while serving in the military.

1. Cleaning Services

It should come as no surprise that people who have successfully trained and drilled to keep everything “inspection ready” might find a cleaning service franchise to be among the best franchises for veterans. With a renewed focus and concern on cleanliness and sanitation, cleaning services are utilized by both commercial and residential customers and are in-demand businesses to own and build.

DRYER VENT WIZARD®

Did you know that every 36 minutes a dryer fire occurs?

With Dryer Vent Wizard, you’re providing a potentially life-saving service to your community. Dryer Vent Wizard offers the freedom to work out of a home-based office serving homeowners and businesses by cleaning, repairing, and installing their dryer vents. As one of the only national providers of dryer vent cleaning and repair services in the U.S., Dryer Vent Wizard has unparalleled expertise in a heavily underrepresented market.

2. Residential and Commercial Painting

Painting franchises aren’t just about painting, they are about managing projects and making a positive impact on the lives of those around you. This is appealing to veterans, who have had similar objectives throughout their military careers. Helping people improve their homes can be a rewarding line of work, and painting franchises are designed to suit hardworking people from nearly any professional background.

MOLLY MAID®

Molly Maid ranks among the top ten percent of all the nation’s franchises in recruiting military veterans. Listed on the Franchise 500 List and as one of America’s Top Global Franchises by Entrepreneur Magazine, Molly Maid is a franchise with low costs and reliable demand. The house cleaning franchise business runs on a predictable Monday-to-Friday schedule, providing franchise owners with a flexible work/life balance, which many veterans find to be desirable as they transition to civilian life.

WINDOW GENIE®

More than window cleaning, Window Genie offers diversified, year-round service offerings, including window tinting, pressure washing, gutter cleaning, and holiday lights. With homeowners motivated to keep their property looking good, Window Genie is an ideal franchise for recurring revenue seekers. Veterans can often maintain a family friendly workweek with a flexible schedule.

FIVE STAR PAINTING®

Recognized as a top franchise for veterans in 2021 by Entrepreneur, Five Star Painting specializes in residential and commercial painting. The highly scalable business model offers a family-friendly work week, with no emergency or oncall work. With no initial office space required and minimal overhead, you can work from virtually anywhere.

3. Property Management

Veterans are proficient at quickly responding to changing environments and dynamics, and they can maintain a calm demeanor in any situation. Property management is a fast-paced job with room to grow into managing larger properties,

as little work as required. Landscaping teams excel when they’re operating as one, which is what makes veteran leadership experience so important.

REAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

According to a recent Harvard study, America is becoming a renter nation, with over a third of the nation’s households now renting. Property management involves the maintenance and oversight of real estate. When the owner of a property doesn't have the time or experience to handle the operational tasks involved in renting or leasing their property, they have the option of hiring a property manager. The ability of veterans to handle a variety of situations is an important skill for Real Property Management franchise owners when it comes to fulfilling duties such as communicating with both tenants and property owners, handling tenant requests, and hiring or managing maintenance and repair contractors.

4. LANDSCAPING

For those who don’t want to be stuck behind a desk, the landscaping industry allows veterans to slowly transition into business ownership by taking on as much or

THE GROUNDS GUYS®

Landscaping businesses specialize in the care of outdoor spaces for homes and businesses. From mowing lawns and basic plant care to full-service landscape installation, landscape professionals provide a range of services, encompassing designing, building, and maintaining outdoor spaces. The Grounds Guys are committed to helping veterans achieve their dreams and reach their goals of being in business for themselves.

5. PEST CONTROL

Military veterans have said that working in the pest control industry is compelling because they can put the expertise they developed defending our country to work toward defending families from pests and diseases! A pest control franchise may be a fit for veterans who want a business ownership opportunity that frees them from being chained to an office computer, or for those that desire the flexibility of a seasonal business.

MOSQUITO JOE®

Mosquito Joe was identified by Franchise Business Review as one of just 80 franchise brands to be named an awardwinning franchise in its 2021 report on the Top Franchises for Veterans. Mosquito Joe provides mosquito, tick, and flea control treatment to residential and commercial customers. With high reported customer retention, Mosquito Joe has a flexible, recurring revenue business model and a relatively low initial investment.

The Same Thing We Do Every Day Pinky…

In response to a question in a popular Facebook franchising group about “common deal structures” for Master Franchising in a foreign country, I provided this high-level overview of a deal structure actually used in practice for a U.S-based brick and mortar concept. This is by no means a “one size fits all” approach. If you’re interested in learning more about expanding your brand outside of the U.S. – we’re happy to help in any way we can!

Wondering if anyone has insights to typical commercial structures for selling master franchise rights into new countries, as opposed to selling individual franchises.

Master franchising is far more common in foreign countries than single unit or "direct" franchising (which is the typical model in the U.S. for U.S. based franchisors. I'll refer to this as "direct franchising" and it includes sales of single units and multiunit development territories you're probably used to seeing in the U.S.). In many ways it looks similar to “Area Representative” franchising in U.S., but there are some key differences.

126 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE
WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS INSIGHTS TO TYPICAL COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES FOR SELLING MASTER FRANCHISE RIGHTS INTO NEW COUNTRIES, AS OPPOSED TO SELLING INDIVIDUAL FRANCHISES.

The difficulty with direct franchising in a foreign country is having little to no in-country leadership presence from the franchisor (unless you have the capability and desire to establish an in-country satellite office of your U.S. franchisor entity).

Along with added expense and headache of maintaining a foreign office - some countries also have restrictions on foreign investment and company ownership - in other words they REQUIRE that resident nationals have ownership interests (often a majority stake) in the business. For these reasons, and others, many franchisors explore the Master Franchising model.

If we zoom out a bit, using the Master Franchising model in a foreign country has a lot of the same underlying rationale as to why you're franchising in the first place - to subsidize the capital and operational costs/risks of expansion using other people's capital and sweat to build the brand. In exchange for access to that capital and risk allocation - you give up a significant portion of the franchise fees and royalties from in-country franchise sales and operations - and your Master Franchisee helps build your brand as a "microfranchisor" in their country.

To incentivize the Master Franchisee to do this – you give them the opportunity to recoup whatever they paid to acquire the master territory rights and you provide some uncapped upside. This way, the Master is truly building a business, not just acting as incountry middle management

for your franchise system.

While the below is by no means the only way to structure these deals, I'll walk you through a "market" transaction for a brick-andmortar concept (and provide some "why" behind the "what" where possible). This deal was done in a high-end brick and mortar retail play - it could translate for QSR, fitness, hair/ beauty and could certainly also work for services-based businesses. Explanations/ rationale to some of the deal terms will be in [brackets].

MASTER FRANCHISE FEE

$200k - minimum development obligation of 5 units over 5 years - no cap on the total number of units that COULD be sold/developed. $0 additional franchise fees for the first 5 "Master Locations" that the Master Franchisee opens themselves as in-country "Master-Owned Outlets". $10k for each additional Master Owned Outlet they open beyond the first 5 locations. Master Franchisee was required to open at LEAST 1 store to function as the training/model store in-country.

[The U.S. franchise fee for a single unit was $50k so providing 5 units that the Master can open at no additional franchise fee gives the Master the ability to either: (i) open Master-Owned Units themselves at a reduced franchise fee of $40k each (which they already paid as the “Master Franchise Fee”); or (ii) begin selling franchise rights and recoup the Master Franchise Fee through franchise sales (I'll discuss franchise fee and royalty splits below).

FRANCHISE FEE/ ROYALTY SPLITS

50% split of initial franchise fees from the sale of franchises and 50% of royalties generated from operations of franchises or "Master-Owned" locations. Master was required to charge a minimum franchise fee of $50k and a minimum Royalty rate of 7% - though the Master was free to charge more if they thought the market could bear it in-country. For any "Master-Owned" outlets - the Master would only pay 3.5% royalty on those stores - they would be free to either pay the

THE DIFFICULTY WITH DIRECT FRANCHISING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY IS HAVING LITTLE TO NO IN-COUNTRY LEADERSHIP PRESENCE FROM THE FRANCHISOR.

LIKE A U.S. FRANCHISE AGREEMENT - THE MAJORITY OF THE CONTROLS AND APPROVAL DISCRETION IS LEFT IN THE HANDS OF THE U.S. FRANCHISOR AS THE OWNER OF THE BRAND.

remaining 50% of the royalty to their Master Franchisor entity, or just enjoy a reduced royalty rate for their MasterOwned Outlets (there may be benefits and rationale to why a franchisor (U.S. or Master) would "pay themselves" by paying royalties from their own outlets up to the franchisor entity they also own – but that discussion is beyond the scope of this reply).

[These are a couple of key deal levers that could certainly move. I'd expect to see any movement on these to be DOWNWARD in favor of the Master Franchisee. A 50% split of franchise fees and royalties is a pretty rich cut for the U.S. franchisor given the amount of operational support the Master will be expected to provide while acting as the "microfranchisor" in-country.]

COMPLIANCE/FDD PREPARATION

U.S. franchisor provides the Master the U.S. FDD and agreements every year - it is the Master's responsibility (and cost) to have them modified to local law, and to handle disclosure of in-country franchisees if their country has a franchise disclosure obligation similar to the U.S. (many foreign countries do NOT have disclosure regimes like the U.S., though there are certain principles of general contract law, or a selfregulating governing oversight

body that put an obligation on the Master to adapt the U.S. agreements to in-country standards and terms).

[This is one of the main reasons to have a Master rather than engage in direct franchising in a foreign country. Having an in-country, “boots on the ground” presence with access to local attorneys/accountants/advisors is typically much less friction and cost than having a U.S. franchisor and their legal/ executive teams try to become experts on laws/regulations and business practices/culture of a foreign country.]

OPERATIONAL/MARKETING/ SYSTEM STANDARDS

Like a U.S. franchise agreement - the majority of the controls and approval discretion is left in the hands of the U.S. franchisor as the owner of the brand. In this deal, the U.S. franchisor agreed to provide whatever was used in the U.S. for marketing - it was up to the Master to have customized/translated, and the U.S. franchisor reserved the right to approve or disapprove any customized marketing. The Master franchisee was not required to use the same exact vendors as U.S. franchisees, but any vendors had to meet certain standards set by the U.S. franchisor and we're subject to approval/disapproval. The U.S. franchisor also retained

any intellectual property rights generated by the Master in the operation of the business - whether "hard" IP rights like copyrights, trademarks, patents, etc., or "soft" IP rights like processes, know-how, etc.

[Master franchising certainly elevates the "loss of control" risk for the U.S. franchisor that results from both a lack of direct oversight (e.g. "longdistance land lording") and a lack of understanding of incountry business and cultural sensitivities. In other words, the U.S. franchisor will often look to their Master franchisee and trust that what they are saying needs to happen to translate the brand into the local market, is what needs to happen.]

As the world continues to shrink, we expect to see more and more U.S. franchisors look beyond our borders for expansion opportunities. If you’d like to learn more about expanding your business outside of the U.S., contact the franchise attorneys who’ve been there before at Roda Chalfant Franchise Law.

Former US Navy Sailor Serves Community Through TruBlue Total House Care

After a decade of service, Steven Magyar managed home service businesses before investing in TruBlue Total House Care.

Steven Magyar grew up with military service members around him. Many of his formative years were filled with lessons regarding work ethic, perseverance and the value of engaging with different kinds of people. So, it was only natural that he joined the service as well.

Magyar was in the U.S. Navy for 10 years, serving as an aircraft mechanic for four and an air traffic controller for six. After retiring from the service in 1990, he began managing home service businesses.

In 2019, Magyar found TruBlue Total House Care. Now, he owns and operates his business in Spokane Valley, Washington, and the thread of “service” continues to weave through his daily life.

TruBlue Total House Care is a franchise that provides subscription-based home maintenance and handyman services for seniors and families. As American seniors

132 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM VETERANS ISSUE

continue to age, the desire to “age in place,” or stay in their homes as long as possible, is ever more prevalent. TruBlue is structured to allow business owners to specifically address that need.

Many Veterans Choose To Invest in TruBlue To Continue Their Service to Their Local and Military Communities

In 2021, 27% of veterans reported a service-related disability. For Gulf War-era II veterans, this statistic jumps to 44%. For aging veterans and those who are disabled, a business like TruBlue can provide the support they need

dedication, professionalism and confidence that franchisees need to succeed, and franchising presents a wonderful outlet through which many veterans continue to serve.

Strategic Franchising also works to lower the barrier to entry for veterans by offering a $2,000 discount on the initial investment, making the leap

lessons he learned while in the military. Franchising is notoriously a great fit for veterans as it provides a proven business model, or system, to follow, and business owners’ dedication to highquality execution is what brings success — much like many military processes.

However, the training and growth models many service

to maintain independence in their homes.

Another pillar of military culture, camaraderie, shines through in these investments. The commitment that many veterans have to the veteran community is palpable, and the services TruBlue provides are yet another way for veterans to provide a sort of mutual aid, ensuring no brother or sister-in-arms is ever left behind.

TruBlue’s parent franchisor, Strategic Franchising, recognizes the merit of service and the respectable traits that veterans carry with them in their everyday lives. Military service engrains discipline,

to entrepreneurship just a bit easier.

Magyar took that leap in 2019, and he continues to grow his business.

“This is my retirement plan, but I only want to expand at a pace that is manageable and ethical for me,” he said.

“I’m making sure I am slow and intentional about hiring, and as I expand, I’ll offer more attractive benefits packages to my employees while also growing the scope of recurring services I offer to elderly and disabled community members.”

Magyar also notes that, as he grows with TruBlue, he is able to apply many of the

members experience are also mirrored in franchising. Franchise owners are tasked with supervisory, recruiting and training responsibilities; many times, they are hiring an employee to take over a portion of the work they had previously handled.

“The quality of the work and framework of the organization are crucial,” Magyar explained. “You can’t move up until you train your replacement. You’re able to afford opportunities to others, but you also have to be secure in your position. Those ideals are all very related to my work with TruBlue, but they were originally instilled in me during my time in the military.”

133WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | NOVEMBER 2022
THE COMMITMENT THAT MANY VETERANS HAVE TO THE VETERAN COMMUNITY IS PALPABLE, AND THE SERVICES TRUBLUE PROVIDES ARE YET ANOTHER WAY FOR VETERANS TO PROVIDE A SORT OF MUTUAL AID, ENSURING NO BROTHER OR SISTER-IN-ARMS IS EVER LEFT BEHIND.

How This Military Veteran Transitioned From Lieutenant to Franchise Owner

in North Dakota and Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“Do the very best at the task that you’re doing right now, and the rest will take care of itself.” These are words that Military Veteran, Troy Ingle, lives by as a Huntington Learning Center franchise owner.

Before joining the Huntington Learning Center franchise, Troy served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years

In addition to his nine years of service, Troy also has an extensive professional background. He worked as a system/process engineer for a startup company in networking and sales before deciding to move on and become the general manager at Home Depot. After moving on from Home Depot, he took on another leadership role with a commercial roofing business.

Having worked so many years for other people, Troy realized that he wanted to start his own business to connect with the community.

Although he had no prior experience working in education, training several individuals throughout his previous corporate jobs sparked his interest and led

him to open a Huntington Learning Center franchise.

INDULGING IN THE WORLD OF EDUCATION

Troy didn’t allow his lack of education experience to deter him from opening his first Huntington Learning Center in Fleming Island, Florida. In 2016, Troy not only became a franchise owner, but he also became a member of the advisory council for early childhood education for the local high school. Joining the advisory council has allowed Troy to learn which tools the students need and build relationships with teachers.

In addition to his involvement at the local

high school, he also makes time to practice and teach interviewing skills to the students.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CRAFTING A GOOD TEAM

Being relatively new to the tutoring franchise, Troy relies on his 26 employees to help him provide the best service to students.

“As a team leader, I like to hire people who are smarter and better than me. We can teach the skills, so I always look for people who have the right attitude and that are reliable and willing to adapt,” Troy says.

Since becoming a franchise owner, Troy has quickly realized that the key to growing his business is transparency. He’s learned that parents want the teachers to follow up on promises made and have open and honest communication about their student’s progress. As a result of these practices, they’ve received several parent referrals within the past year.

Troy and his team get a sense of fulfillment when parents share their satisfaction with their child’s academic progress.

“There was a student whose parents were going to take her out of private school until they sent her to our center and immediately saw improvement after only 14 hours. She’s now doing her homework on her own at home and is continuing to progress,” Troy says.

RECEIVING SUPPORT DURING TIMES OF ADVERSITY

With success comes adversity, but the Huntington team is equipped to handle all challenges.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Troy could no longer keep the physical store open and was forced to shut down for a month and a half. The Huntington corporate team stepped in to help Troy build the online learning side of his business to continue tutoring students during the lockdown.

Staying in contact with teachers throughout the pandemic has allowed Troy to maintain relationships to discuss the needs of students, listen to their experiences and hear what skill gaps are missing in the education realm since transitioning to an online learning environment.

As a result of Huntington’s ongoing support, 2021 has been Troy’s best year since opening his doors in 2016.

CONTINUING BEST PRACTICES

Huntington Learning Center has created the foundation and mapped out the process for franchise owners to operate their business. Troy has followed these processes and attributes some of his successes to the support of the corporate team.

In addition to following the processes set by Huntington, he’s also reached out to other franchise owners to learn the best practices of operating a tutoring franchise.

Transitioning from a military career to owning a franchise has forced Troy to adapt in more ways than one, but he continues to do his very best and let the rest work itself out.

Skills Learned During Service Help Mentor the Next Generation

Caroline Ola has been an Owner of the Redmond Wash., location for Skill Samurai since April of this year. Before deciding to invest in a franchise, she served in the U.S. Navy from 2006 to 2015 where she spent the final three years as Operations Manager at a submarine base in charge of 66 military personnel. When Caroline left service, she was an E7 Chief Petty Officer. In addition to instilling in her a loyalty to her country and fellow countrymen, Caroline credits the Navy with helping her develop leadership skills and taught her self sacrifice–two skills that are essential when leading others.

Caroline decided to invest in a Skill Samurai franchise because she and her husband enjoy technology and wanted to use what they have learned throughout their lives to help build the next generation of engineers, software developers, game designers and technology professionals. As the world’s first franchise focused on career-readiness education, Skill Samurai strives to prepare students beginning in elementary school for the changing

workplace infrastructure and to help build up the number of STEM employees in the workforce. Learning to code helps students foster critical thinking skills that will help them be successful throughout the rest of their educational careers.

“Skill Samurai gives us that opportunity to mentor and coach the coming generation,” Caroline said.

In addition to offering a chance to boost the skills of young people, Skill Samurai also offers Franchise Owners a membership business model that creates the opportunity for predictable, recurring revenue. The combination of a brick and mortar and an on-the-go model allows Franchise Owners to to attract more clients, resulting in natural cross-marketing and

repeat business. With a strong training program and ongoing support, Skill Samurai Owners have a clear path to success.

Caroline noted that the support goes all the way to the top and that Skill Samurai Founder Jeff Hughes is always accessible and willing to provide guidance. She also credited her success to networking within her local community and sharing what problem she is solving for potential customers.

For other veterans looking to invest in a Skill Samurai franchise she offers this advice: “Be willing to do the work and lean into your experience and expertise… Also, lean on your fellow franchisees, they can share their experiences and tips on what has worked for them.”

Business Ideas For Veterans

Oneway to make the transition from military service to civilian life more fulfilling is to start a business. More specifically, many veterans find franchise business ownership to be an excellent fit for their skills, training, and plans for the future. In fact, the International Franchise Association reports that one out of every seven franchises in the United States is veteran-owned and operated. But what type of franchise businesses do veterans own? For many, the answer might lie with a Neighborly brand franchise that offers military veterans returning to civilian life a compelling new path to achieving success in their second act.

FINDING YOUR PATH

As you get ready to start a new career path, one of the best things you can do is to let your training, experience, and interests lead the way. During your time in active duty, you built a strong foundation of leadership skills, discipline, and problem-solving skills.

These are the same skills that it takes to own and run a successful business. In fact, these skills help make franchise ownership a top option for veterans to consider. If you have the dedication and know-how to work hard (something active military service teaches), chances are that a supportive franchise company is all you’ll need to grow a successful business.

TOP BUSINESS IDEAS FOR VETERANS

If you’re looking for business ideas, consider looking into the home services industry. Not only are home services almost always in high demand, but these services also tend to remain in demand even in times of economic downturns. With low barriers to entry, low overhead, and a high degree of flexibility, a home services franchise like those offered by Neighborly® may be a great fit for you. Some of the top home service franchise business ideas for veterans include:

• Property management

• Home and business cleaning (for example, windows, general janitorial, dryer vents)

• Home maintenance (for example, air conditioning, appliance repair, electrical, plumbing)

• Home and business remodeling and repair (for example, interior remodels, handyman services, roofing services)

THE HOME SERVICES INDUSTRY IS ALMOST ALWAYS IN HIGH DEMAND, AND THESE SERVICES ALSO TEND TO REMAIN IN DEMAND EVEN IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC DOWNTURNS.

• Pest control

With so many different options within the home services industry, it is possible to find a business idea that is in line with your interests and that will support your professional and personal goals, too.

VETERANS AND NEIGHBORLY

Neighborly’s founder, Don Dwyer, knew that many veterans were uniquely qualified to manage workforces, grow their businesses, and serve their communities. For this reason, Neighborly has always welcomed veterans into their family of brands. The company participates in the VetFran program, which is an initiative designed to help veterans start a franchise business by discounting fees. Combined with relatively low startup costs, Neighborly can help make your dream of business ownership a reality.

If you are a Veteran or you know one ready to own a high-quality home services business, be sure to contact the Neighborly Franchise Development team and get their help finding a great opportunity for you.

Navy Veteran Chooses Pillar To Post Home Inspectors® as New Career

Jose Fiallos, a San Antonio resident and the new owner of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors, serving the greater San Antonio market is a 23year veteran of the United States Navy, having retired in 2013. He couldn’t have found a more perfect fit for a second career with Pillar To Post Home Inspectors.

“I was looking to start and run my own business and when I was researching franchises, I came across Pillar To Post Home Inspectors,” Fiallos said. “My reason for choosing to join them was the great sense of camaraderie I received from everyone I spoke with. I missed that from the military.”

As far as choosing home inspection as a new career, these are industry facts: The U.S. building inspector industry, measured by revenue, is estimated to have a market size of $4.9 billion in 2022, according to global research firm IBISWorld.

Veterans represent 14 percent of franchisees in the U.S., and they prove a good fit for the franchise model because veterans possess strong leadership skills and a thorough understanding of being part of a team. Franchises also operate

on proven systems and defined procedures and the military training that veterans go through allows them to easily adapt to a system and find success in franchising.

Pillar To Post is among the leading franchisors in the VetFran Program, part of the International Franchise Association’s many advantages. The company enjoys 5-Star status in VetFran and a third of their franchisees are veterans. Veterans also hire veterans so franchisees like Fiallos can lead to many employment opportunities for those who have served as well.

Fiallos was a Career Counselor for his last 13 years of service and prior to that was a Navy Cook. In addition, Fiallos served in several capacities outside his job field, including as a Navy Recruiter, Drill Instructor and Master Training Specialist.

“When you think of individuals who are wellrounded and ready to lead a business of their own, people such as Fiallos come to mind,” said Dan Steward, President and CEO of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors.

“I am the type of leader who leads from the front. I set the example. I am firm and fair, and I have high expectations in all I do,” Fiallos said. “As a

businessperson, I am going to put all my skills from my previous experience into my business to ensure it is successful and prosperous and has a great reputation.”

One of the many reasons Fiallos chose Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is the innovative technologies the company recently introduced. These advanced technologies, along with the business model, provide an exceptional home inspection with unique and innovative features that are all delivered within a seamless brand experience. All developed pre-pandemic and ready to be utilized when the pandemic struck, the new features further highlight Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ standing as a visionary in its industry. The package is now known as the Ultimate Home Inspection and it’s revolutionizing the home inspection industry. So much so that the company was just awarded the much coveted Best Innovators by Franchise Update Media in the category of “best customer service tools.”

Fiallos has found making the

transition to a Pillar To Post Home Inspectors franchise owner an easy one. As a Navy Recruiter he was charged with finding and enlisting future Sailors and as a Career Counselor, his focus was on assisting, guiding, and developing Sailors’ careers. Both skills have translated easily to his new career. “Interestingly enough for me, I decided to start a business in which those skills have enhanced my ability to run my business,” Fiallos said. “It’s just in a reverse role, where I am still going to be taking care of people and developing relationships, but it will be for the purpose of succeeding in and building my own business.”

The Military Taught Me the Business of People

For nearly 10 years, I had the immense honor to serve our nation in the Louisiana Army National Guard. I was activated for Desert Storm in the early 1990s, and was stationed at Fort Hood for several months. My military experience defined me, and after retiring from service in 1999, I carried countless lessons with me into civilian life. One of the many valuable lessons I learned was the business of people.

As a franchisee with Express Employment Professionals, I am in the business of people. My business in Lake City, Florida, is just one of an international network

of more than 850 offices worldwide that help client companies find great people and help people find fulfilling employment.

I never anticipated that my career path would lead me to entrepreneurship, but, like so many veterans who came before me — and so many that will follow — I believe the military is an excellent launch pad to business ownership.

And when it came time for me to choose a franchise, staffing made perfect sense because my career in the Army National Guard had taught me four key lessons about people that I apply in my franchise business every day.

PEOPLE ARE COACHABLE. Military

recruits do not enlist in the service knowing much, if anything at all, about their mission or their role. They are taught. During my years as an Express franchisee, I have regularly heard business owners and leaders say that being “coachable” is highly regarded and trumps experience any day. Like those who have successful careers in the military, coachable people can have successful careers in many industries. There will always be someone willing to train them and invest in them.

This is an important lesson I’ve applied in my own business to help and encourage my team to be the best they can be, and one I encourage my clients to consider in the hiring process.

TEACHABLE MOMENTS ARE EVERYWHERE — AND PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM THEM.

For my fellow franchise owners, I would like to pose a question: when someone on your team delivers bad news about something they were tasked with completing, how do you respond? If your answer is, “Use it as a teaching moment,” then I would say you are correct. Members of the

152 NOVEMBER 2022 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
VETERANS ISSUE

military are used to the notion that teachable moments are everywhere. After all, even the smallest mistake can mean life or death. My time in the U.S. Army taught me that there is always an opportunity to explain what an employee could have done better or differently in the situation. The lesson comes when I ask them what they plan to do next to help them gain a better understanding of the situation. And when there’s ever a question about what could be a teachable moment and how to address it, I turn to my faith to navigate those uncertainties.

DIVERSITY IS AN ASSET.

The military recruits its force from all walks of life, so servicepeople must work with an incredibly diverse cross-section of our society. They learn to collaborate with people of different races and backgrounds. There is also immense diversity of thought.

It was an incredibly rewarding experience as I learned how to work closely with people who have different life experiences than my own, and it set me up for success as a business owner and trusted staffing resource in my community.

PROFESSIONALISM WILL GET YOU FAR.

The military teaches servicepeople to practice professionalism in every interaction, whether it be with a superior, fellow servicemember, trusted friend, or stranger. Prior to becoming Express franchise owners, my wife and I visited the market where we wanted to open our office to conduct an official survey of businesses and learn how they felt about the local staffing services. Many

shared negative experiences. That intel fueled our desire to serve our community in the most professional way possible — and it has been a key driver of our success. People value professionalism. We now stand out as the staffing agency of choice in Lake City and the surrounding region, and have developed deep relationships with our clients to help them find the right people for the job.

I am incredibly proud of the time I spent in the Louisiana Army National Guard and the lessons it taught me about the people business. My hope is that other franchise operators, whether they are active duty military or veterans, can take these lessons and apply them to their own businesses, too.

Veteran Franchisee Profile: Adam Baker

Ifyou asked the staff at Schooley Mitchell Head Office to name a franchisee who always makes them smile, many would name Adam Baker. From his warm demeanor, dedicated professionalism, and uncanny ability to make every person he works with feel valued, Adam is truly a cherished member of the Schooley Mitchell family. He is also one of the veterans we are proud to recognize and appreciate in the month of November.

Before venturing into a career in business, Adam led a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, including service in Iraq. For eight years, after being commissioned through ROTC,

University of Pittsburgh, Adam served his country as a Security Forces Officer.

“‘Defensor Fortis’ – Defenders of the Force – our role was to safeguard USAF personnel and property so that those in operations could focus on their core mission,” Adam recalls. “Appropriate, as with Schooley Mitchell, we defend our client’s resources (money) so they can focus on their core mission.”

During his time as a Security Forces Officer, Adam was entrusted with many important responsibilities, the success of which were matters of global importance. While in combat in Iraq, Adam led forces that provided internal and external security for an

operating base that housed a theater internment facility, in which a significant portion of the country’s Al Qaeda leadership were imprisoned.

On top of his critically important work, Adam’s time in the military introduced him to the principle which is the heart and soul of Schooley Mitchell – cost reduction!

As Adam explains, “Just prior to our deployment, the United States Government began investigating cost savings strategies that would help lower the cost of the war without negatively impacting the war fighting effort. I was selected to oversee one of the initiatives and that was my first taste into how an organization can effectively reduce costs without impacting its operation or culture.”

Who could have predicted that in the not-so-distant future, Adam would be doing cost reduction work full time and uplifting his community throughout the process?

It is abundantly clear that Adam’s years in the Air Force were not only an example of incredible service to one’s country, but also helped shape him into a true leader, in his personal life, in business, and his community of Erie, Pennsylvania.

Adam credits a lot of this personal development to his role models and superiors in the Air Force:

“During my time in the service, I had great leaders that were relentless in their pursuit of excellence. When we came up short, we were trained to look at our own failures and fix those first before we looked at external causes of failure.”

Adam also says that these leadership lessons were crucial in helping him prepare for franchise ownership:

“This mentality aligns well with franchise models because any setbacks or failures almost always lie at the feet of the franchisees – the models work if you follow them.”

It is this sense of selfresponsibility, accountability, and growth mindset that has not only made Adam a strong example of franchisee success in our system, as well as an

absolute pleasure for everyone – from Head Office, to clients, to community contacts – to work with. Adam always takes the time to promote local businesses, recognize the accomplishments of his colleagues, and go out of his way to show kindness. Blending good business practice with community spirit is truly one of Adam’s superpowers.

We are incredibly thankful for the diligence of individuals like Adam, whose hard work keeps us safe every day, and we couldn’t be happier to call him a part of the Schooley Mitchell family!

Militaryveterans are our country’s greatest heroes, and when their tours of duty are complete, they bring home a wealth of knowledge to the civilian workplace. This is why organizations like Neighborly and VetFran are dedicated to supporting their entrepreneurial efforts, including franchise ownership.

COMMANDING PRESENCE

VetFran was launched in 1991 by Neighborly founder and Army veteran, Don Dwyer. Creating the organization was Dwyer’s way to give back to veterans — and it’s something all of us at Neighborly are proud of. One of the things Dwyer recognized early on is that veterans not only bring a wealth of great expertise to

any job — but they’re uniquely qualified to be franchise owners.

For example, veterans have strong leadership skills which are critical to leading and motivating a team. They fully understand the importance of commitment and use their grit and can-do attitude to overcome challenges and adversity. They also have a deep desire to give back to the communities in which they serve. And, perhaps one of the most businessimportant attributes: they are accustomed to following a set of systems and processes. This is at the core of how our

Of course, there are challenges when a veteran returns to civilian life, including learning how to translate their experiences into civilian terms. They also are presented with the newfound obstacles of switching their mindsets to understanding that the workforce thinks and acts differently than the military. On the pragmatic side, veterans can experience challenges with securing the necessary funds to launch a business.

But through every one of these obstacles, VetFran and

by Brad Stevenson, Chief Development Officer, Neighborly

Neighborly are here to help make these transitions as seamless as possible, ensuring they have the support they need to confidently run their businesses.

NEIGHBORLY SUPPORTS VETFRAN

Would it surprise you to know that veterans account for 14% of all franchise businesses nationwide — but only around 7% of the population? At Neighborly, our numbers run pretty parallel with the national figures. We have 5,000 franchise businesses — and almost 400 of them are veterans. Several veterans hold executive leadership positions at Neighborly, including Mary Thompson, Chief Operating Officer and Mosquito Joe President Lou Schager. We also have veterans on our operations and supply chain teams.

In the U.S., Neighborly is comprised of 18 professional home services brands, but for any of them to be a part of the VetFran organization, they must meet a certain criteria. Our company also offers financial incentives for veterans including discounts on the initial franchise fee. And once the franchise business has been established, we provide ongoing training and world-class systems to drive results.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN LIFT UP VETERANS

VetFran is the ideal place for veterans to gain industry knowledge, learn about franchise companies and industries, and leverage the resources and contacts to help guide them through the next chapter of their careers. But there are ways any business can support veterans, such as:

• Provide financial incentives or discounts for veterans

• Actively recruit and hire veterans as they transition out of the military or look for a change from their current career

• Donate time and resources to the veteran community through philanthropic efforts

I appreciate the sacrifice and commitment that veterans and their families make to advance our country. My father and uncle flew in

the Air Force, both of my grandfathers served in the Army during WWII, my cousin serves in the Marines, and my great uncle was in the Navy. I am filled with gratitude for all they did for our family. In turn, I want to ensure that all of us at Neighborly take care of those who take care of us — and assist military veterans with their dream of business ownership.

Battle-Forged

Grizzly

Auto Detailing founder, Joshua Hagen, served his country honorably for the better part of two decades. His founding story is not quite like any other.

On 20 December, 2019, the team members’ of Josh’s new venture, Grizzly Auto Detailing, lay hunkered down at the bottom of their containerized housing unit (CHU) as a firefight raged outside. Josh had brought on two Army buddies, Ben Fertich and Andy Scroggin, just two weeks prior to help him brainstorm a way to bring his unique brand of auto detailing to a wider audience. Their side project was quickly growing into an all-consuming obsession. They just had to make it home from an 11-month long deployment in one piece first.

The morning had started with a 5-ton vehicle borne

improvised explosive device (VBID) detonating next to the thick exterior wall of Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. Concrete from the wall shredded nearby buildings and Taliban fighters began pouring in. Although the initial waves of the attack were repulsed by an on-guard Special Forces security team, the Taliban fighters had seized a vacant hospital and were firing into the base from its upper floors.

Josh acted quickly and jumped into a nearby vehicle with an Apache Helicopter Pilot, who was in urgent need of a ride to his aircraft. Under fire, Josh barreled through the base, safely delivering the pilot who along with his co-pilot successfully ended the firefight

with a pair of accurately placed AGM-114 Hellfire missiles.

Bagram Airfield was scarred from the attack, but incredibly no U.S. Forces were killed in the fighting.

Josh was not only a dedicated Soldier, but also a passionate businessman. Despite his unexpected deployment to Afghanistan 3 months earlier, Josh did not shutter his existing Auto Detailing business that he had operated for 15 years. Instead, with the help of his wife, Sarah, he operated it remotely, overseeing administrative functions while his wife managed the small staff of Detail Technicians.

After the shared experience on 20 December, Josh, Ben

and Andy (both UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Pilots at the time) became fast friends and realized the potential growth of a van-based Auto Detailing business. With some time available (the war was winding down), the team set to work developing their concept and beginning Grizzly Auto Detailing.

In between combat operations, Josh and his team purchased two mobile detailing vans and hired customer service representatives. The business would not just be about

with fast growth came robust systems and expanded needs for corporate employees. In order to alleviate the management requirements, Josh and his team began developing a mobile phone application that would create an incredible customer experience and streamline daily business functions.

In just another short year, the team began a beta test of the app based mobile detailing concept and received incredible feedback from customers. With a dedicated app for Detail Technicians, and

that the true solution to bringing his brand nationwide was to franchise. So, in 2022 the company turned its attention to developing a world-class franchise system. With customer satisfaction and franchisee success as the guiding principles, Grizzly converted its current successful model into a low-cost, high return franchise system.

From his time as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, Josh learned what it meant to be a servant leader, placing others' needs before his own and

quality Auto Detailing, it would be about quality customer service. Customers loved the concept and the business grew quickly in Upstate, NY. Sarah led the team of Service Representatives while Josh prioritized operations, training and developing new Detailers remotely.

Upon returning from Afghanistan, Josh took charge of his changed business and began realizing its true potential. Under his leadership, the Company rapidly grew to a fleet of 14 vehicles across 4 states: targeting military communities, as they were opportune locations to grow the new Grizzly brand. Along

a dedicated app for customers, Grizzly became a truly ondemand service. Customers could book, communicate, pay and review the business all from one place without the need of a customer service representative. While at the same time, Detail Technicians could manage their schedules, follow exact procedures, and upsell to customers without the direct support or supervision of a service representative or superior.

Realizing that the system was a success, Josh returned the company’s focus to rapid growth. After reading Franchise Your Business by Mark Seibert, Josh knew

inspiring his employees. Josh mentors and develops Detail Technicians, something he intends to continue doing with Franchisees. He also focuses on company and system cohesion in his weekly calls to operators. Josh, Sarah and the Grizzly team are excited for their franchising future and look forward to bringing their unique brand of Auto Detailing to the entire nation.

After 20 Years Managing Oil Change Specialty Shops and Restaurants, Army Vet Decided to Become His Own Boss

Franchisee

Brian

Morrison spent two years (1996-1998) in the Army as a “food service specialist.” After leaving the Army, he worked as a district manager for multiple restaurant chains. He also managed oil change specialty shops for 20 years, which gave him a good working knowledge of preventive automotive maintenance.

It was at this point in time that Brian, and his wife Denise, knew they wanted to build something for themselves.

The Morrisons explored many franchise brands. They knew

they wanted to own a healthy business with a good profit margin. They also knew they wanted to be able to do more than just oil changes and preventive maintenance. That is why they decided to purchase a SpeeDee Oil Change & Auto Service® franchise. SpeeDee offers customers a wide variety of services, including 17-point oil changes, tune-up services,

state inspections, alignments, and brake services. Hours vary depending on the location, but a typical SpeeDee’s franchise is open during normal business hours and closed by 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. This was all very appealing to the Morrisons as Brian was used to working 60 to 70 hours per week.

The Morrison’s first franchise was a SpeeDee center in Spartanburg, North Carolina, which opened on August 19, 2019. Wanting to expand, they opened a Grease Monkey® center in Pineville, North Carolina, in October 2020.

In addition to those first two centers, the Morrisons now own and operate seven additional centers in North Carolina: Five Grease Monkey centers in Charlotte, Greenville, Greensboro, and Kernsville;

and two additional SpeeDee centers in Charlotte and Winston/Salem. Between all nine centers, the Morrisons employ 100 people. They plan on opening three more SpeeDee centers and three more Grease Monkey centers in North Carolina over the next couple of years, to have a total of 12-15 locations. “It feels good to be able to assist customers with their vehicle needs. When your car doesn’t work, and you can’t get to where you need to be, that can be extremely stressful. It’s nice to be able to help,” Brian said.

As a veteran, one thing that impressed the Morrisons is SpeeDee’s and Grease Monkey’s commitment to bringing on veterans as franchisees. “Grease Monkey has an excellent program for veterans,” said Brian. “They do a lot to attract and support veterans. SpeeDee and Grease Monkey as well as their vendors have created programs to help their veteran franchisees ramp up quickly.”

The Morrison’s have been married 20 years, and according to Brian, he couldn’t do without Denise. Denise handles all of the administrative, payroll, human resource, and accounts payable/receivable functions for all of the centers. They have four adult children. In addition,

they have nine grandchildren— which just happens to be the same number of centers they currently own. They spend most of their free time with their grandchildren. Their daughter, Jessica, is currently learning the day-to-day administrative responsibilities. When the Morrisons retire, they will most likely keep the stores and hire people to manage them. However, they are hoping that one of their children or grandchildren will take over running the stores someday.

Franchising for more than 40 years, Grease Monkey is part of the FullSpeed Automotive® family of brands, one of the nation’s largest franchisors of automotive service centers. Grease Monkey provides preventive maintenance and light mechanical repair services that meet vehicle manufacturers’ recommendations and warranty requirements.

A cornerstone of Grease Monkey’s business model is

its Certified Pit Crew program, which trains teams to deliver speed, quality, and a high level of customer service at every service visit.

With more than 185 locations across the United States and Mexico, SpeeDee prides itself on offering quality service through SpeeDee Performance Certified technicians. SpeeDee stores are locally owned, which means franchisees get to build strong and longlasting relationships within their communities. In terms of franchising, the brand is still expanding. Franchisee benefits include comprehensive business planning assistance and technical and marketing support.

Hawaii Fluid Art is honored to have Austin Grau as our Area Franchise Sales Manager. His 8 years of service in the United States Army as a 92F Petroleum Supply Specialist gave him the know-how to come out on top in any situation, preparing him for the vast possibilities while navigating the rubicon of business environments. Inspired by his father, also in the armed forces which sparked his interest in fighting for his country. The job stability and rewarding benefits attracted Austin to the uniformed life.

When he joined the military in 2014, he attended basic

training at Fort Jackson. After graduating he went to Fort Lee for 10 rigorous weeks for his MOS training. He learned everything possible about how to inspect, clean, store, and issue fuel to a numerous variety of wheeled vehicles, tracked vehicles, and fixed wing/rotor aircrafts. His first duty station was Fort Carson, CO. Then was stationed in Camp Humphreys, South

Korea. Third duty station was Fort Hood. Grau bravely took on combat deployment during Spartan Shield in the Middle East.

“It was an honor to serve. It allowed me to experience sights, sounds, smells, and feelings that most of the population will never get to experience. I've traveled more than most ever will in their lifetime and lived life to the fullest. During my time in the Army I grew up a lot, learned leadership skills, a hard work ethic, but most of all the memories and bonds I grew to cherish will never fade as time goes on.”

— Austin Grau

He is happily married to Devan, his wife of 9 years and father to six year old son, Jasper. When he is not working, he enjoys fishing, hiking, going to the gym and tackling DIY projects. Austin is a pivotal part of our team. When asked about his career with Hawaii Fluid Art, Austin says “As lead franchise sale representative for Hawaii Fluid Art. I travel all over the United States to introduce and promote our wonderful business as an opportunity for others. I simply express the ins and outs of the franchise to potential franchisees. I build a network of leads by doing

as little as saying hi to actually teaching interested parties in our fluid art style via demos. I show that anyone can create memories, smiles, and a one of a kind piece of art with Hawaii Fluid Art.” Grau continues “This career means so much to me. My mother created this wonderful experience for the world to enjoy and I take great pride and enjoyment in being able to spread the love, positivity, and message that is Hawaii Fluid Art. I’m not a salesman! I tell our Hawaii Fluid Art story and how we help one individual at a time to create lasting memories along with smiles. It sells itself to be honest.”

Hawaii Fluid Art’s founder, Maya Ratcliff, Austin’s mother is a proud military mom. Not only was her eldest son in the Army, but her second born son Tyler was in the Navy.

Tyler Grau started as Hawaii Fluid Art - Kansas City store manager and was promoted to our Pre-opening and Postopening Specialist. He arrives on site in the days prior to a new store opening and helps

prepare for the grand opening. Tyler will also stay for several days after to ensure a smooth opening process. This oneon-one support makes our franchisees confident in the early days of operation.

Tyler served in the United States Navy as an aeronautical electrical engineer for four years. He enjoyed his time being able to travel the world while making countless memories during his service. When Tyler is not helping open new Hawaii Fluid Art stores, he enjoys playing music, rock climbing, tasting craft beers, and all things art related.

Maya Ratcliff says “What an honor it is to work with my adult sons, growing the family business.” She has big plans for Hawaii Fluid Art’s future and hopes to involve more veterans in the business. Hawaii Fluid Art supports all military members and offers a $10,000 off the franchise fee for all military members- current or retired.

It’s

never too late to pursue your dreams. Just ask 55-year-old Michael Kidd, who recently retired after a 30-year career with the federal government. He’s going to earn a bachelor’s degree in December, and he just fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a small-business owner on Oct. 24 when he and his wife,

Michelle, opened a franchised location of Pet Butler, which provides dog poop-scooping services and pet-waste removal to homes and multi-family communities for thousands of

clients across North America.

In fact, it’s going to be a family affair for the Kidds, who live in Cary and are all passionate about pets. The couple’s three children – Justin (24), Mikayla (21), and Kelsey (15) – will all be part of the family business. Both Michelle and Mikayla have worked in veterinarian offices and are

excited to be part of the new family business. Pet Butler will serve customers in Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay, Varina, Willow Springs, New Hill, and Morrisville.

Having worked three decades for the federal government, Michael spent the past 16 years as a manager responsible for a team of 10 officers. He will graduate from Liberty University at year’s end with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. “I believe my management experience should benefit me while operating Pet Butler. And I also served four years in the U.S. Navy, which taught me responsibility at an early age,” Kidd said. “My love for animals is definitely what inspired me to go into the pet industry. This is the best of both worlds for me and my family.”

The timing really could not be any better for the Kidds to join Pet Butler. According to a recent study by Morgan Stanley, the $100 billion pet industry is poised to nearly triple to $275 billion by 2030 thanks to favorable demographics and surging increases in new pet owners and spending. What’s more, 65 percent of 18- to 34-yearolds say they plan to acquire or add a pet in the next five

years, helping drive what’s expected to be a 14 percent increase in pet ownership by 2030.

And while you might think the economic impact of the pet poop industry is just a drop in the bucket (sorry), that’s not the case. According to the latest figures from market research publisher Packaged Facts, retail sales of pet cleanup products was expected to reach $4 billion in the U.S. And it’s no surprise that pet owners are more than willing to spend – and spend a lot – on their furry friends.

With the continued growth in pet ownership and the trends in pet parenting, (see Washington Post article here), Pet Butler is well-positioned to be the go-to service provider for all pets’ needs.

“I am excited about Pet Butler’s expansion into other services such as pet sitting, dog walking, and pet shuttling,” Kidd said. “Pet ownership, especially dogs, is high right now and there are no signs of it slowing

down. With everyone having busy lives, there will always be a need for the services we provide.”

And Kidd had some words of advice for anyone else who might be thinking of shaking up their own status quo. “Do not ever give up on your dream,” he said. “I am 55 and finally getting to live out my dream. The only thing that can stop you is you.”
