Entrepreneurial Valor: Military Veterans Forge a Path to Franchise Ownership

I

n the journey from military service to civilian life, veterans often seek opportunities that can leverage their skills and experiences for success. For those with an entrepreneurial spirit, the Veterans Franchise Council (VFC) offers invaluable support and guidance on the path to franchise ownership. In this article, we delve into the role and significance of the Veterans Franchise Council in empowering veterans to become successful franchise business owners. Veterans bring a wealth of qualities and attributes to the table that make them outstanding candidates for business ownership. Their leadership, discipline, teamwork, and strong work ethic are not only honed through years of military service but are also highly transferrable to the world of franchising. The Veterans Franchise Council (formerly known as VFC) was conceived as a collective effort to assist veterans in realizing their dreams of entrepreneurship. Launched in 2016 by a group of committed military veterans with experience in franchising, the VFC has since played a pivotal role in connecting veterans with franchise opportunities and the resources needed to thrive in the franchising sector. THE VFC FULFILLS ITS MISSION THROUGH A RANGE OF VITAL INITIATIVES AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS: 1. Franchise Discounts: The VFC collaborates with participating franchise brands to offer substantial discounts on franchise fees to veterans. These financial incentives significantly reduce the financial barriers to entry. 2. Education and Support: The council provides education and support to help veterans navigate the complexities of franchising, from selecting the right franchise to day-to-day business management.

92 3. Access to Essential Resources: The VFC connects veterans with critical resources, including funding options, mentorship programs, and guidance on business planning and operations. 4. Advocacy and Outreach: The VFC advocates for veterans' interests, ensuring that they receive the support they need. 5. Building a Network: The council facilitates

VETERANS MAKE UP ABOUT 7.2% OF ALL BUSINESS OWNERS IN THE U.S. networking opportunities, allowing veterans to form relationships and collaborate within a supportive community. This network is a place to share experiences and knowledge. BET ON A VET INITIATIVE The VFC has a commendable track record of turning veterans' dreams into reality. With the pragmatic orientation of those who have served, the VFC raised a program that gives veterans $10,000 to start a business when they go through the VFC program to learn about business opportunities. Many veterans who have embraced the program have gone on to become thriving franchise business owners. These veterans not only secure their financial futures but also contribute to their communities by creating jobs and delivering valuable products and services. The Veterans Franchise Council remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting veterans. With continued assistance and a robust network, veterans can confidently embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, knowing they have the resources and like-minded peers behind them. The Veterans Franchise Council is not just a group of veterans engaged in franchising; it is a lifeline for veterans who aspire to pursue franchise ownership. By offering discounts, education, resources, advocacy, and a strong network, the VFC empowers veterans to turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality. It's a

testament to the indomitable spirit and skills of veterans when provided with the right support and opportunities, reaffirming their position as invaluable assets in the world of franchising. An inspiring narrative is unfolding of veterans helping veterans and showcasing the entrepreneurial prowess of military veterans in the world of franchise ownership. These veterans, with their discipline, leadership skills, and determination honed in the armed forces, are increasingly turning to the franchising sector as a path to financial independence and success. Veterans have long been recognized for their unwavering commitment, resilience, and ability to handle high-pressure situations. These qualities are not only integral to their military service but also invaluable in the world of business ownership, particularly in the franchise sector. Veterans bring with them a unique set of skills that make them stand out as successful franchisees. Here are some of the industry categories that have proven particularly favorable for veterans: Veteran business ownership has become a significant contributor to the U.S. economy. I. BUSINESS OWNERSHIP RATES AMONG VETERANS: 1. Total Veteran-Owned Businesses: As of the most recent data available in 2021, there were approximately 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the United States.

considerations. In recent years, annual discharges have ranged from approximately 200,000 to 250,000 veterans. 2. Demographics of Veterans Discharged: The demographic makeup of discharged veterans is diverse, reflecting the broader population. Veterans discharged annually encompass various age groups, ethnicities, and educational backgrounds.

132 2. Percentage of Veteran Business Owners: Veterans make up about 7.2% of all business owners in the U.S. This percentage has remained relatively stable in recent years. II. FORMATION RATES OF VETERAN-OWNED BUSINESSES: 1. Startup Activity: Veteran entrepreneurship is on the rise. Over the past decade, the formation rate of veteran-owned businesses has steadily increased. The reasons for this growth are multifaceted, including government support programs, increased recognition of veterans' skills, and the desire for post-military career independence. 2. Franchise Ownership: Franchise ownership is a popular avenue for veterans entering the world of business ownership. The franchise model provides a structured approach and support systems, which align well with the discipline and structure veterans are accustomed to in the military. III. NUMBER OF VETERANS BEING DISCHARGED EACH YEAR: 1. Annual Discharges: The number of veterans being discharged from the military each year varies, influenced by military recruitment levels, mission requirements, and budget

IV. ECONOMIC IMPACT OF VETERAN BUSINESS OWNERSHIP: 1. Job Creation: Veteran-owned businesses contribute significantly to job creation. Collectively, they employ millions of Americans, helping to reduce unemployment and stimulate local economies. 2. Economic Output: The economic impact extends beyond job creation. Veteran-owned businesses generate substantial economic output, with revenues and profits that funnel back into local communities, fostering growth and stability. Community Engagement: Veteran business owners often engage in community initiatives and charitable work, further strengthening their ties to local areas and enhancing social well-being. Federal and State Support: Various federal and state programs, such as the U.S. Small Business Administration's Veterans Business Outreach Centers, provide resources, funding, and training to support veteran entrepreneurs, amplifying their economic contributions. Veteran business ownership is a growing and impactful trend in the United States. With rising business ownership rates, a surge in veteranowned startups, and the ongoing commitment of veterans to their communities, the economic influence of veteran entrepreneurs is set to continue positively affecting the U.S. economy. Policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the general public should recognize and support these dedicated individuals as they forge their paths to success in the business world.

The Immeasurable Value of Veterans

Uniquely Qualified to Run Franchises, Veteran’s Skills Make Them Excellent Business Owners. by Seth Lederman, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company franchises are run by former military members.

B

rave. Trusted. Honorable. Committed. Dedicated. These are just a few words that can be used to describe veterans. These same qualities also make our former service members ideal candidates for franchise ownership. While franchises are an excellent opportunity for aspiring business owners of any stripe, veterans are uniquely qualified for this kind of entrepreneurship. And many of them are already seizing this opportunity. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reports that one in seven

WHY SERVICE MEMBERS MAKE GREAT FRANCHISEES Running a franchise successfully requires grit, determination, analytical skills and leadership ability, which service members have in spades. After all, military veterans have developed their discipline and skills during their time in the military. Also, a passion for serving others goes hand-in-hand with military service for many veterans. But let’s break it down a bit more. All military personnel are trained to follow orders, particularly operating manuals within their area. Franchises use the same tool—a franchise operating manual that details how to run the business best. This provides tested methods that improve your odds of success. The franchise has taken the time to learn from their mistakes, so you don’t have to. Like the military, you don’t have to enter the franchise world with special skills or background. Franchisors take the time to teach you the

ropes and then guide you every step of the way. Once you are trained in their methods, you run your business, but you always have the franchisor as a resource if you have questions or issues along the way. Finally, another reason why veterans make such great franchisees is their adaptability. Just about every service or product you can imagine has a franchise system attached to it. You can build on a skill you learned in the military, grow a personal passion or explore a whole new area. Whatever you decide, the ability you honed in the military to pivot and adjust to new information will serve you well in your future as a franchise owner. These are just a few reasons and skills that lead to service members making excellent business owners within a franchise system. BENEFITS FOR VETERAN FRANCHISE OWNERS Veterans interested in entrepreneurship have many valuable resources at their

"A HERO IS SOMEONE WHO HAS GIVEN HIS OR HER LIFE TO SOMETHING BIGGER THAN ONESELF.” — JOSEPH CAMPBELL disposal, particularly if they’re following a franchise path. Many of these have also been specifically tailored to veterans and their unique needs, from those that provide muchneeded insight to help them on their journey to a new career to others that offer discounted funding options. A great place to learn more and get started is VetFran. As mentioned above, veterans investigating their franchise options can benefit from special funding and discounts, not only from lenders but also from franchisors. These can include lower franchise fees. All these benefits give former military personnel a firmer financial starting point when establishing the next phase of their careers. According to VetFran, 99% of recently surveyed franchisors think that veterans are a good fit as employees within their company, while 97% say that veterans make excellent franchisees. These impressive numbers prove that veterans and franchising are a successful and lucrative match. And the future is bright, with 70% of franchises reporting bringing on a veteran franchisee or corporate employee in the last year alone.

In the U.S., more than 66,000 veterans have taken advantage of a franchise opportunity, according to a study conducted for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation based on data from the U.S. Census. Those veteran-owned franchise businesses provide jobs for more than 800,000 Americans and generate more than $41 billion. And the number of veteran franchise owners is growing every year.

Franchises offer a business model that’s proven, turnkey operations and ongoing support, which means a franchise can help veterans get their businesses up and running quickly. Now consider applying those benefits to an area that all military are trained in—fitness. ISI® Elite Training is one of the nation’s fastest-growing boutique group fitness concepts. Gyms and fitness facilities are a logical way for

veterans to take advantage of a skill set they learned during their service. A 50-minute, low-impact, high-intensity, strength-based workout, ISI Elite Training offers one-on-one attention in a workout designed and led by a certified coach within a team setting. ISI Elite Training focuses on simple but dynamic movements that help burn fat, build muscle, and gain confidence and strength. Through functional movements, every ISI Elite Training workout is designed to target different muscle groups, deliver measurable results and help members train for life. Founded in 2013 and franchising since 2019, ISI Elite Training has quickly awarded more than 70 territories nationwide. With strong unitlevel economics, a superior product, multiple revenue streams, and unlimited growth

potential, ISI Elite Training helps aspiring veteran entrepreneurs build freedom and own a business that makes an impact. The boutique fitness industry is worth $22 billion, and ISI Elite Training is an affordable option within that world. Unlike other boutique workout franchises, ISI Elite Training doesn’t require a large space with a sea of equipment. They keep the overhead low by operating in a smaller footprint (between 2,400 and 3,200 square feet), so your total investment is between $327,400 and $687,000. Veterans can access discounts, including $10,000 off the initial franchise fee and $5,000 off any additional license purchased after the initial license for qualifying veterans. A Grateful Nation: Honoring the Sacrifice of Military Veterans by Max Neonakis

A

s I stand on the threshold of adulthood and entering college next year, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has led me to this point. High school has been a time of self-discovery, exploration, and growth. It's been a period of awakening to the world beyond my immediate surroundings, and one aspect that has truly opened my eyes is the profound appreciation I've developed for the men and women who have served in the military. In this article, I want to share my admiration for our military veterans and reflect on the immeasurable sacrifices they've made to protect our freedom.

24

My journey towards understanding the price of freedom began with an awareness of the sacrifices made by military veterans. Going to Washington DC in my earlier years and seeing the rows of crosses and Stars of David at Arlington Memorial didn’t quite register the way it does now. Veterans are often quiet heroes, and it's easy to take their sacrifices for granted when we don't fully comprehend the depth of their commitment. It was during my high school years that I started to see the bigger picture. Conversations with my parents about national and international events such as the

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

war in Israel, documentaries, and educational programs helped me recognize the profound impact of their service on our nation. One of the first things that struck me was the selflessness of these brave individuals. They choose to put their lives on the line, not for personal gain or glory, but for the greater good of our nation. Their dedication to our country is truly inspiring. They willingly place themselves in harm's way to protect the values and freedoms that we, as Americans, hold dear. It's not just a job for them;

it's a calling, a duty that they shoulder with honor. The sacrifices made by military veterans extend beyond the battlefields. The toll on their physical and mental well-being is substantial, and many veterans return from service forever changed. The physical injuries are often visible reminders of their sacrifices, but the emotional and psychological scars can be just as profound. It's heartbreaking to think of the struggles many veterans face upon returning home, coping with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and trying to reintegrate into civilian life. My admiration for veterans deepened as I learned more about the military conflicts that have shaped our history. My grandfathers generation fought in Vietnam and he lost many of his friends on far away battlefields. Many of them were barely older than I am today. The resilience they demonstrate in the face of adversity is truly awe-inspiring. Their stories are filled with courage, camaraderie, and a sense of duty that transcends personal interests. These are the stories that remind us of the price of freedom and the importance of protecting the values that make our nation great. Another aspect that I've come to appreciate is the unity and diversity within the military. Our armed forces bring together individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or social status. In the military, it's not your origin that defines you, but your dedication and

NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE OR POLITICAL AFFILIATION, WE MUST REMEMBER THAT THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS NOT FREE; IT IS PAID IN BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS BY THOSE WHO SERVE. commitment to the mission. This diversity enriches the military community and serves as a testament to the principles of equality and inclusivity that our nation aspires to uphold. The military also fosters lifelong bonds among those who serve. The camaraderie among veterans is truly remarkable. They share a unique connection forged through shared challenges and experiences. This sense of brotherhood and sisterhood is something that many of us can only imagine. It's a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and the power of solidarity. As I've become more aware of the sacrifices of military veterans, I've come to understand that their service extends beyond the years they spend in uniform. Their contribution to our society and communities is ongoing. Many veterans continue to serve as leaders, mentors, and role

models, offering their wisdom and experience to guide the next generation. Additionally, veterans often play a crucial role in humanitarian efforts and disaster relief, both at home and abroad. Living in Florida and having been through several hurricanes, I have seen our military come and selflessly help family’s and communities who have been impacted when disaster strikes. Their skills and training make them invaluable in times of crisis, and their dedication to helping others is a testament to their unwavering commitment to service. I've also come to recognize the importance of supporting our veterans, not just with words of gratitude, but with tangible actions. Initiatives that provide veterans with access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities are vital. Moreover, raising awareness about the challenges they face, particularly those related to mental health, is essential to ensuring that they receive the care and support they deserve. No matter what your age or political affiliation, we must remember that the price of freedom is not free; it is paid in blood, sweat, and tears by those who serve. I carry with me a profound sense of gratitude for our veterans and a commitment to honoring their sacrifices by striving to be a responsible and engaged citizen. It's our duty to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten and that we continue to support and appreciate those who have given so much for our nation.

The Appreciation of Veterans Through the Eyes of a Daughter by Michelle Taber, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

M

y father never spoke of his time in the military. The only reason I knew he was a Veteran was because I saw him wear his hat sometimes when he went off to the local VFW hall. I am not sure how old I was, maybe 9. I am not even sure why I knew about the existence of the VFW hall, but I feel like I remember it. I swear, I even remember

32

going there a time or two. An old school meeting hall and as basic as it gets. I was not old enough to inquire really, so I never did. Fast forward to my fathers death. After most of his affairs were settled and my mother was in a place of comfort, or at least enough to go through his things, we took on the difficult task of it all. We found a flag folded up in a triangle and we

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

were not sure where it came from. I don’t even remember where we found it, but it was amongst his things, along with some of his metals. I still did not make any inquiries with my Mother about it. I guess my mind was just elsewhere and it was a part of his life that he never shared. I did have the wherewithal however, to order the special

triangle flag box to keep the flag safe and proper. When it came in. I gave it to one of my brothers, with his metals for safekeeping. And that was that. Fast forward again, many years later when my Mother passed away and I was once again, getting affairs in order. But, this time was different. It is much more final, when both parents are now gone. It brings you to a different way of thinking, remembering and appreciating. As I was going through documents, I came across my fathers enlisted record and report of separation with honorable discharge from the military. I never knew my mother still had this, but then again, why would I? It just simply was not talked about. Can I tell you that this document had a major impact on my life? It changed the entire way that I viewed my father and our tumultuous father/daughter relationship.I was the last of eight children and he was already up there in age, so that probably played a part in our relationship, along with other family matters and his hidden past. But this find was giving an entirely new perspective. But, back to the document. I knew my father was not a tall man, he stood only 5’7”. But I didn’t know that he only weighed in at a cool buck fifty during the time he was in the military. “He seemed bigger to me in real life”, I chuckled to myself. But as I continued reading the document, I was gobsmacked to find out that my father had been to

Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Hence the Eame Theater Ribbon with 5 bronze stars, amongst a few other metals. Boy, I sure hope that I am repeating all of that correctly. And then… Whoa! No kidding! And holy smokes…my father was a rifle sharpshooter? I think I stood there with my mouth wide open for several seconds. Stunned as if just got slapped across the face. Who was this man? He was a badass, that is for sure! I had to sit down for a minute and soak all of this in. My mind was reeling about all the possibilities of what this all meant for his life. How it shaped who he is and was. How I wished with every ounce of my being that I knew that part of his past, while he was still alive. Could I have been a place of comfort or pride for him to share this part of his past with me? I immediately knew and knew and felt that I missed out. Of course, I have always honored those who have served. But, this took it to a whole new level. Instantly , I had a newfound respect for my father and all Veterans that have fought on our behalf as well others. I wish as an adult, he would have shared more of this with me. But, that was not his way and I am sure not the way of many Veterans . He clearly held a tremendous amount in, deep inside for many years. How this must have affected him and his future self. I can only imagine. My heart is swelling at the thought of it.

I am honored to be the daughter of a Veteran. I honor all Veterans and the sacrifices they have made for us. I support and honor all of you, through the eyes of a daughter. Statistically, as of 2021 Veterans have ownership of over 66,000 franchises. This equates to $41 billion in GDP and about 14% of all franchise owners being Veterans. I would say those are some pretty good statistics! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Michelle Taber has been in the business of business for 25 plus years. VETERANS ISSUE

A Veterans’ Quandary

“Do I Have the Skills Necessary to be a Successful Franchise Owner?” by Steve Taylor, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

I

hear this same (or similar) question nearly every day – and as a business owner, Navy vet and franchise consultant – my instinct is to answer with an immediate and resounding “YES!”. I have many data points to rely on (including my own) and I believe my confidence in the typical vet is more than justified. However, the underlying issue reflected in the question is more subtle and implies to me a misunderstanding of the difference between “skills” and “qualities”. LET ME EXPLAIN: When I discuss skills with my clients, I am referring to vocational skills that can be taught in a class, get better with practice, can be typically “hired out”, and are liable to become obsolete over time. I am talking about skills like bookkeeping, sales, carpentry, engineering, etc. The vast majority of “job seekers” are looking to apply their skills (resume) to a known need (job posting) in exchange for compensation (paycheck) and this is a not a bad thing. Qualities, however, are developed over time through training and experience,

36

become second nature (habitual), and consistently and consciously (and unconsciously) are reinforced (think SOP’s, traditions, senior NCO’s ‘guidance’, etc). These are often DIRECTLY applicable to many business situations and highly valued by those looking to build a successful enterprise. For Veterans who seek to

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

explore the path less traveled (business ownership), I would urge you to reflect on the QUALITIES you exhibit not just the skills. And because most of the vets I know are humble by nature, please understand that these qualities you have developed over the course of your service are both unusual and valuable.

TYPICAL QUALITIES AND BEHAVIORS EXHIBITED BY MILITARY VETERANS: 1. Discipline and Work Ethic: You know, there's a good reason why the military is often associated with discipline and a strong work ethic. Veterans understand the value of hard work, commitment, and determination. They're not afraid to roll up their sleeves and put in the hours needed to make a business succeed. 2. Leadership Skills: In the military, leadership isn't just a buzzword; it's a way of life. Veterans are trained to lead by example, make critical decisions under pressure, and motivate their teams to achieve a common goal. These leadership skills translate seamlessly into the world of franchise ownership. A veteran knows how to inspire and guide their staff to success. 3. Experience learning & executing unfamiliar tasks: Life in the military is all about adaptability. Veterans are used to facing ever-changing circumstances and making quick decisions. In the world of franchising, things don't always go as planned, but veterans have the resilience and adaptability to handle unexpected challenges with grace and determination. 4. Attention to Detail: When you've been responsible for the lives of your comrades, attention to detail becomes second nature. Veterans know the importance of getting the small things right. 5. Teamwork / Collaborative by Nature: Veterans know that success is a team effort. They've been a part of a well-

oiled machine, where every member's role is essential to the mission's success. Being capable of building a strong, cohesive team is key. 6. Risk Management: In the military, risk assessment and management are crucial. Veterans have been trained to evaluate and mitigate risks in high-pressure situations. 7. Integrity and Values: Honor, integrity, and a strong sense of values are instilled in veterans during their service. These core principles are the foundation of trust, and trust is what sets the best franchise owners apart. 8. Resilience: Life in the military can be tough, both physically and mentally. Veterans have faced adversity head-on and come through stronger. They have the resilience to handle the ups and downs that come with franchise ownership, allowing them to persevere even in challenging times. 9. Resourcefulness: Veterans are renowned for their resourcefulness. They've learned to make the most out of limited resources and think creatively to solve problems. 10. Attention to Customer Service: The military places a strong emphasis on service, and veterans often carry that dedication to serving others into their civilian careers. In the franchise world, providing exceptional customer service is vital, and veterans understand the importance of going the extra mile to satisfy their customers. 11. Community Involvement: Veterans are often deeply involved in their communities,

and they understand the importance of giving back. As franchise owners, they often make an effort to engage with and support their local communities, which can lead to positive public relations and customer loyalty. The bottom line is that Veterans typically make extraordinary franchise owners. Their military training and experience instill them with qualities that are essential for running a successful enterprise. Perhaps the better question is: What qualities do I have that will make my business most successful? Jacci Castille:

A Veteran, Entrepreneur, and the Heart Behind the Jacked!Potato Franchise System by Joe Fox, Senior Franchise Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

M

y father was a Veteran who had a full 30-year career in the Army. I grew up with a deep and profound respect for those who serve, and have served, our great country. Our Veterans come from all walks of life and while they have a very diverse set of skills, there are some skills and traits that many share. The very skills that enabled them to

be valuable service members are the skills that make many of them successful franchise business owners! One such Veteran is Jacci Castille, Founder of the Jacked!Potato franchise system. Jacci’s journey has been full of twists and turns. In the world of franchising, there are individuals who stand out not just for their entrepreneurial spirit but

also for their unwavering dedication to a cause. Jacci Castille, a US Army Veteran and Founder of the Jacked!Potato franchise system, embodies this rare combination of business acumen, passion for food, and a profound commitment to serving the community. Jacci Castille's journey is a tale of resilience and adaptability. She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Her decision to join the U.S. Army took her on a path filled with structure, teamwork, and dedication. Her 14 years in the military instilled in her the values of discipline, humility, and persistence. Like most Veterans Jacci also knows the value of teamwork, leadership, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, qualities that continue to serve her well as an entrepreneur. THE GENESIS OF JACKED!POTATO After her honorable discharge from the military, Jacci found herself drawn to her roots…. the joy of cooking and the shared experience of a family meal. Her journey into the culinary world began as she honed her skills and experimented with flavors, inspired by her family's

love for food. She understood the power of a good meal in bringing people together and fostering a sense of community. In 2016, Jacci Castille decided to channel her passion for food and her military discipline into a unique and innovative restaurant concept: Jacked!Potato. She took the traditional baked potato and elevated it to a culinary masterpiece, offering an array of creative toppings and fillings that delighted her customers' taste buds. The venture was an immediate hit and quickly gained a devoted following. As her flagship restaurant continued to thrive, Jacci Castille made the bold move to expand her vision by franchising Jacked!Potato. This decision marked the birth of a franchise network that promises to bring her innovative potato dishes to communities far and wide. Her unique approach to franchising, centered on community engagement and quality, has set her apart in the competitive world of fastcasual dining. For Jacci, taking her initial idea and developing it first into a successful restaurant concept, and now into a Franchise system has not been easy. Jacci has had many challenges along the way. By leveraging the many skills that she developed in the military, and her personal traits, Jacci has overcome those challenges. The discipline and persistence I have observed in Jacci in just the past 3 years of this journey have been impressive by any standards.

JACCI CASTILLE TOOK THE TRADITIONAL BAKED POTATO AND ELEVATED IT TO A CULINARY MASTERPIECE...

She is determined and never gives up. The mission WILL be successfully completed! SUPPORTING VETERANS AND THE COMMUNITY Jacci's commitment to community extends beyond her culinary endeavors. Veterans in Franchising: Marching Towards Entrepreneurial Success by Al Gonzalez, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

I

magine veterans transitioning from the battlefield to the business field, armed with a different kind of armor: the spirit of entrepreneurship. Just like soldiers adapt to different terrains, veterans have been mastering the art of franchising, proving that their skills, dedication, and resilience are a potent mix for success. In this article, we'll dive into the world of veterans in franchising, exploring their unique journeys, challenges, and strategies that have made them exceptional franchisees.

48

THE BATTLE FOR TRANSITION Transitioning from military life to civilian life is no easy feat. For veterans, it's akin to moving from one battlefield to another. They must navigate a world of new rules, languages, and challenges. But here's the twist – veterans are trained to adapt quickly. Their ability to strategize and execute plans with precision sets them up for success in franchising. Veterans bring an unyielding work ethic to the table. Their discipline, leadership skills, and

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

a "never give up" attitude become their secret weapons. They've faced adversity headon during their service, and franchising is just another mission to accomplish. THE BATTLE BUDDY SYSTEM In the military, a battle buddy is someone who watches your back, offering support and guidance when needed. In franchising, veterans often rely on mentorship and support networks provided

IN THE WORLD OF FRANCHISING, VETERANS ARE NOT JUST SURVIVORS; THEY ARE THRIVING LEADERS. by organizations like VetFran. These networks offer veterans a lifeline as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of business ownership. Just like in the military, having someone who's "been there, done that" can be the difference between success and failure. ADAPTING TO NEW ORDERS One of the key attributes of a successful veteran franchisee is their ability to follow the franchisor's playbook while adding their unique touch. It's like taking a mission brief and executing it with precision. Veterans understand the importance of adhering to processes and procedures, ensuring the franchise operates smoothly. However, they also bring their innovative spirit to the table, finding new ways to achieve the mission objectives, just like they did in their service days. OVERCOMING LANDMINES In the business world, there are pitfalls and challenges that can blow up your plans. For veterans in franchising, these challenges come in various forms. It could be the financial strain of starting a business, the learning curve of running a franchise or even dealing with customer complaints. But veterans don't back down from challenges; they adapt and overcome. Their ability to handle highpressure situations with composure serves them well in

resolving issues. Like defusing a live landmine, veterans tackle problems head-on, ensuring the safety and success of their franchise. THE ART OF CAMOUFLAGE Just as soldiers blend into their surroundings to avoid detection, veteran franchisees adapt to the local market. They understand that what works in one location might not work in another. Veterans excel at understanding their target audience tailoring their approach to fit the local culture and needs. In the world of franchising, veterans are not just survivors; they are thriving leaders. They bring unique skills, values, and experiences that set them apart. Transitioning from military service to franchising is not a mere change of scenery; it's a strategic deployment of skills honed on the battlefield of life. So, the next time you encounter a veteran-owned franchise, remember that it's more than a business – it's a testament to the unwavering spirit of those who have served their country. These veterans in franchising are not just following orders; they are leading a new charge, conquering new territories, and leaving their mark on the world of business. Their story is a testament to the fact that veterans will always find a way to succeed no matter the battlefield.

Veterans Making the Transition: Why They Excel as Franchise Owners by Joe Griff ith II, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company

T

he transition from active duty to civilian life can be a daunting and challenging process for military veterans. As a veteran myself, USAF Combat Arms Instructor and recently Retired Firefighter of 26 years, I understand firsthand the unique set of experiences and skills that veterans bring to the table. This transition isn't just about leaving one career behind; it's about embracing new opportunities, and for many veterans, franchise ownership is a path to financial independence and a sense of purpose in their civilian lives. Did you know that 1 out of every 7 franchises is owned by a veteran. While veterans constitute approximately 7% of the population, they make up a notable 14% of franchisees. Veteran franchise owners are more inclined to employ fellow veterans, and a significant 65% of franchisors have reported an uptick in their veteran hiring rates in recent years. However, the success of veterans in the franchise world is closely tied to the guidance they receive when selecting the right franchise opportunity. 1. LEADERSHIP AND DISCIPLINE:

52

Veterans understand the importance of leadership and discipline in high-pressure situations. Whether on the battlefield or in any military role, we've honed our skills to make quick decisions and lead our teams efficiently. These qualities are crucial when considering franchise ownership, where you'll lead a

team and be responsible for the success of your business. 2. ADHERENCE TO SYSTEMS AND PROTOCOLS: In the military, following established systems and protocols is paramount for safety and effectiveness. In the world of franchising, every operation relies on adhering

WHILE VETERANS CONSTITUTE APPROXIMATELY 7% OF THE POPULATION, THEY MAKE UP A NOTABLE 14% OF FRANCHISEES. to standardized procedures to maintain consistency and quality. Veterans have been trained to execute tasks meticulously, making them ideal franchise owners who can ensure the franchise brand's reputation remains intact. 3. PROBLEM-SOLVING AND ADAPTABILITY: Military service exposes individuals to a variety of unpredictable challenges. Veterans have learned to be quick on their feet, adapt to ever-changing circumstances, and find creative solutions to complex problems. These problem-solving and adaptability skills are invaluable when navigating the business world as a franchise owner. 4. TEAMWORK AND CAMARADERIE: The sense of camaraderie and teamwork ingrained in military culture is a powerful asset. Veterans understand the power of collaboration, trust, and shared goals. As franchise owners, this ability to build cohesive, motivated teams becomes a driving force behind the success of their businesses. 5. STRONG WORK ETHIC AND DETERMINATION: Veterans are renowned for their strong work ethic and unwavering determination. They're not afraid to put in long hours and lead by example, traits that are critical for the demanding world of franchise ownership. The determination

to overcome challenges and adversity is what propels many veteran-owned franchises to thrive. 6. A WILLINGNESS TO GIVE BACK: With a background in service, many veterans view franchise ownership as an opportunity to give back to their communities. They're driven to create jobs and support local economies, often engaging in community outreach and philanthropic efforts that enrich the franchise landscape. Veterans, having mastered the traits of discipline and leadership during their service, possess skills highly sought after by business owners and many franchise organizations. However, the financial burden of becoming an entrepreneur can be overwhelming, making it difficult for veterans to commit to this lifestyle change. "Bet on a Vet 100!" was developed specifically to help veterans. This program provides up to $10,000 to any active or former veteran who purchases a franchise from a member of the veteran's council, subject to terms and conditions. The (up to) $10,000 grant can be used for any purpose, with an emphasis on areas such as sales and marketing, which are typically critical for generating revenue and launching a business successfully. Getting the word out can often be one of the most overlooked areas for an emerging business.

The Veteran's Council behind the "Bet on a Vet 100!" initiative hopes to inspire other groups to support veterans after the program's success becomes widely known. If you are interested in connecting with the council to learn how to become a member of the "Bet on a Vet 100!" program and receive $10,000 to start your franchise, please reach out. In conclusion, the transition from military service to civilian life can be both challenging and rewarding. Veterans possess a unique set of qualities that make them exceptional franchise owners, and with programs like "Bet on a Vet 100!" in place, the transition becomes more accessible and less daunting. This initiative is a testament to the commitment to veterans' success, allowing them to leverage their skills and discipline in the world of franchise ownership. Mike Murphy – 1st Recipient of the “Bet on a Vet 100” Program. Mike received $5000. through a franchise business. She meticulously researched and chose Senior Care Authority, a company that aligns with her values and aspirations. The franchise model appealed to her as it provided a proven system and resources for a smoother start in her role as a Senior Care Advisor. Joy was drawn to Senior Care Authority due to their excellent reputation, culture of excellence, expertise, and various revenue streams beyond eldercare consulting and placement, such as Beyond Driving with Dignity and Employee Assistance Solutions for Eldercare (EASE). One influential factor in her decision-making process was the Senior Meeting with the CEO of Senior Care Authority, Frank Samson, which further solidified her decision and excitement to be part of the company. Joy looks forward to growing with the Senior Care Authority and making a positive difference in the lives of seniors and their families during challenging times. VETERANS ISSUE

A Navy Veteran and His Business Partner Put Their Respective Talents to Work as Owners of Floor Coverings International of the Panhandle by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates

P

atrick Daniel was born and raised in Washington State where he married his wife Emily in 2010. Daniel then joined the Navy in 2012. His first assignment out of Navy RTC (boot camp) was in Pensacola Florida. “I was an E-6 Leading Petty Officer/Computer Network Defense Manager. I joined the Navy to be part of something

60

larger than myself and to expand my horizons beyond my hometown. Prior to joining, I had never left the US. Upon separating, the Navy had brought me to 27 countries. I had the opportunity to meet amazing people and participate in some amazing missions during my time and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to serve for the time that I did. I have no doubt

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

that my service and education has helped me succeed in every part of my life going forward,” Daniel recounted fondly. As far as returning to Pensacola goes, “My wife and I fell in love with the area. I was assigned to a ship in Rota, Spain for three years, and when it was our turn to come back to the US, we chose Pensacola to be our permanent home. We feel incredibly lucky to have

found this community which we love and raised our two daughters here. Daniel, 34, served at Correy Station in Pensacola. During that time, he and his wife launched two real estate investment companies, one focused on renovating and selling dilapidated homes in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to address the affordable housing shortage in those areas and the other focused on multi-family real estate. In 2021, Patrick met Isaac Phillips, who had worked in operations management for 15 years and previously led a company and team that managed a commercial real estate portfolio, a role that he loved. “Despite that, I was reminded that it was just another job, building someone else’s dream, and not my own, and would never be anything more. I had always wanted to own my own company and that longing had grown stronger over the years,” shared Phillips. The pair met through common real estate interests when both were considering service-based franchise opportunities. Sharing common goals, they decided to form a business partnership,

with Phillips relocating from Michigan with his family. Through due diligence and research, it became clear to the two real estate pros that Floor Coverings International, a Georgia based franchisor, was the right company for them. The company brought awardwinning customer service technologies and incredible training and support programs to the table. After meeting CEO Tom Wood, these already very able partners were all in. Their FCI of West Florida Panhandle also has a storefront at 698 E. Heinberg St., in Pensacola, with a second location expected to open in the Destin/Fort Walton Beach area in July. But the mobile showrooms are part of what makes the company so special. The Floor to Your Door customer experience has literally changed the way homeowners and/or business owners are shopping for flooring solutions. The company boasts of over 3000 samples that can make a great

experience, since the customer sees all samples in their home or office, with their own lighting, accessories, and paint pallet all around them. “I loved my time, the camaraderie and accomplishments I achieved in the Navy,” Daniel said. “Now I am equally thrilled with this new chapter in my life.”

ABOUT FLOOR COVERINGS INTERNATIONAL Floor Coverings International currently has 240 franchisees with 30 more under development. For information on a franchise go to www.flooringfranchise.com.

Blake Linthicum: A New Chapter of Excellence with EverLine Coatings enturing into the world of franchising, Blake Linthicum’s recent commitment to EverLine Coatings in West Phoenix/West Valley is a testament to his forwardthinking approach and unyielding pursuit of excellence. While his journey with EverLine began just in December 2022, there’s an air of anticipation around the impact he’s poised to make. At the heart of Blake’s work ethic is a decade of military service as a Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC). These roles weren’t just designations but rigorous responsibilities that demanded precision, quick decision-making, and a deep understanding of teamwork dynamics. Supporting both conventional and special operations teams, Blake’s

experiences in high-pressure situations equipped him with leadership skills that few can match. Beyond the military, Blake’s academic and professional pursuits further solidified his reputation as a diligent and strategic thinker. An MBA and a PMP Certification broadened his business and project management understanding. With roles at Amazon’s Warehouse Operations Management and as a Department of Defense Project Manager, Blake cultivated a diverse skill set that seamlessly merges logistics, management, and leadership. So, why the move to EverLine Coatings? Blake’s vision aligns perfectly with the franchise’s ethos.

“I’ve always been drawn to

ventures prioritizing quality, teamwork, and genuine

services; it’s about making a

positive mark on every project

and in the community,” Blake remarked.

Now, residing in Phoenix and at the helm of his EverLine franchise, Blake is weaving together his vast experiences to set a new standard in the industry. Beyond his burgeoning business, his dedication to community welfare remains undiminished, with continued support for organizations like the Salvation Army.

VETERANS ISSUE

A Place At Home:

A Veteran-Friendly Franchise Leading the Way in Senior Care

A

call to serve — that’s why many people join the U.S. Armed Forces. That commitment to service doesn’t go away when soldiers become veterans. Instead, many veterans look for ways to continue that mission of service in their communities. One industry that provides a unique opportunity for veterans is the senior care industry and, more specifically, in-home care franchises. A Place At Home, a seniorfocused home care provider, is that golden opportunity. With over 30 locations nationwide, the franchise performs over 15,000 hours of care a week, helping over 650 people, including fellow veterans.

68

MARINE CORPS TO FRANCHISE OWNER Alex Caudill, a 10-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran, is the proud owner of A Place At Home – Scottsdale (Arizona). His journey, which started when he enlisted in the Marine Corps at 17 and deployed to Afghanistan to become a young healthcare entrepreneur, is inspiring. Caudill’s military background equipped him with the discipline and determination to excel in the senior care industry. His Scottsdale franchise, one of the largest service providers for nonskilled care for the VA Phoenix Health Care System, reflects his commitment to serving veterans in the community. “I understand what my clients are going through. I can walk veterans through the entire process, from getting benefits to receiving care, because I’ve been in their shoes,” says Caudill. Caudill is a decorated veteran and franchise owner. His military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Valor, among other recognitions. In his five years of being a part of the A Place At Home franchise system, he’s been recognized as a top-

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

performing territory multiple times and receives top client satisfaction ratings. Caudill has rapidly expanded his service area, officially owning 18 territories.

LEVERAGING MILITARY EXPERIENCE FOR FRANCHISE SUCCESS Todd Tomlinson was inspired to open A Place At Home - DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) Northwest after his grandmother passed away in a nursing home. It’s not just his passion for serving the senior population that makes him a great franchise owner, but the lessons he learned in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Air Force. Tomlinson is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of veterans.

OUR FRANCHISE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO GUIDE AND HELP VETERANS EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, ENSURING A SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNERSHIP.

The rigorous training, discipline, and leadership roles he undertook during his decade in the U.S. Air Force service have equipped him with a unique skill set that seamlessly translates into the world of franchising. From strategic planning and team management to handling high-pressure situations with poise, Todd’s military experiences have provided him with a solid foundation. He often draws parallels between the structured environment of the military and the systematic approach required in franchising, emphasizing the importance of following processes, adapting to changing scenarios, and leading a team toward a common goal. “In the military and life, nothing ever goes as planned,” says Tomlinson. “But I’ve realized stressing over obstacles is counterproductive. Instead, I put faith in the system and power through, whether the military’s or A Place At Home’s.”

LEADING A LIFE OF SERVICE Larry Thomas, who enlisted in the Army in 1977 and served for 15 years, brings a wealth of leadership experience to his A Place At Home franchise in Lafayette, Louisiana. Throughout his life, Thomas has served more than just his country — he has also served the community around him. He’s cared for seniors and his brother, who was quadriplegic. Larry’s military background and senior care experiences are what make him a compassionate and dedicated franchise owner. Alongside his wife, Thomas opened the first Louisiana A Place At Home location in July. “I’ve witnessed sub-par inhome care, and we’re here to change that,” says Thomas. “My leadership experience in the military and senior care allows me to connect with our clients personally.”

WHY A PLACE AT HOME STANDS OUT The home care industry’s potential for growth, combined with the increasing demand for quality senior care services, makes A Place At Home a lucrative business opportunity. This franchise offers the perfect blend of business and community service for veterans seeking a sense of purpose and service post-military. While numerous franchises exist in the senior care industry, A Place At Home stands out for our comprehensive approach to senior care. From in-home care and care coordination to staffing solutions for assisted living and other long-term care communities, our franchise offers a range of services that cater to the diverse needs of seniors. A Place At Home understands the value of service, dedication, and leadership veterans bring. In recognition of their immense contribution, we offer a 10% discount on the initial franchise fee for veterans. This gesture is a testament to our respect and appreciation for those who have served the country. Our franchise system is designed to guide and help veterans every step of the way, ensuring a smooth transition into successful business ownership. FROM MILITARY HEROES TO HOME CLEAN HEROES: A Veteran Couple’s Journey to Franchise Ownership

F

or some, there is no greater desire than to serve. It’s what motivates many brave individuals to join the armed forces. And when their time in the military is done, these veterans look for different ways to serve others. Two such individuals are husband and wife Julio and Chelsey Choy, U.S. veterans

80

turned Home Clean Heroes franchisees. The two met while students at CSUN—California State University, Northridge. Chelsey had just completed her military service. “I was recruited in high school,” said Chelsey. “My time in the Navy was an amazing experience. I got to travel and after four years of service they paid for my college education.”

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

Julio’s path to the military was much different. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, his family came to America where he finished high school. Then he enrolled at CSUN where he met Chelsey. After graduation, Julio enlisted in the Army. “I saw my service as a way to pay back this country for all it had done for me.” Julio had envisioned a long career as a military officer, but unfortunately, medical issues forced him to retire after only two years. Julio continued his education earning an MBA and a master’s degree in organizational leadership. Meanwhile, Chelsey pursued her passion for health and fitness, helping others as a personal trainer and health coach. The couple married in 2017 and had a daughter in 2019. “I’d always dreamed of owning my own business,” said Julio. “Chelsey and I talked about a lot, but the time was never right.” Finally, when their daughter turned three, they decided to go for it. “We’d thought about owning a restaurant and looked into buying an already established one, but the deal fell through.”

Julio reached out to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and was put in touch with Vetrepreneur, an organization designed to help veterans navigate the world of franchising and find the franchise that best suits their business goals. “Home Clean Heroes was one of the options they gave us,” said Julio. “We hadn’t considered a cleaning service before that, but it made sense to us.” They especially liked the way Home Clean Heroes supports local first responders through its Heroes

that helped them succeed in the military equip them to be successful franchise owners. “The military is all about structure and organization,

“THE MILITARY IS ALL ABOUT STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION, SO IT WAS EASY TO GET ON BOARD WITH THE FRANCHISE MODEL.” SAID CHELSEY.

“That turned out to be for the best,” said Chelsey. “Running a restaurant requires such long hours, it would have meant a lot of time away from our little girl. We needed to find a business that gave us a good work/life balance.”

First Initiative. “The fact that a portion of every cleaning goes to help first responders was a big draw for us as we are all about giving back to the community,” said Chelsey. Home Clean Heroes of Santa Clarita opened for business in September. “We are the first one in California – the first on the whole west coast,” said Chelsey. And the Choys already have plans to expand. “We were awarded two territories and are planning to open the second late next year." Like the Choys, most veterans leave the service ready for new opportunities. Many of them find those opportunities in the world of franchising—1 in every 7 franchises is owned by a veteran. It’s a natural fit as skills

so it was easy to get on board with the franchise model.” said Chelsey. “Teamwork, resilience, and punctuality are three of the skills that we use every day,” added Julio. Plus, their service taught them a thing or two about cleaning. “Starting out in the military, you are required to clean bathrooms,” said Julio. “So, we know how to get the job done properly for our customers and we hold our staff to those standards.” The Choys encourage other veterans to get involved with franchising. “There’s a lot of steps involved, but with a military background you are prepared for it,” said Julio. “Go for it. Try something new. It could change your life like it changed ours.”

Why This Vet Chose Spray-Net by Joshua Emison, Director of Franchise Development for Spray-Net, Franchise Fastlane

W

e recently sat down with Matt Gibb, a Navy veteran, whose journey from the decks of the USS Ronald Reagan to being at the helm of a Spray-Net franchise is nothing short of inspiring. Here’s what Matt shared about his adventure into the world of franchising:

Q: Matt, can you share a

bit about your time in the military?

A: I dived into the Navy, with

an initial aim at the SEAL program. Post a tough stint at BUD/S, my journey made a turn that led me to working on aircraft carriers. My first duty station was San Diego, on the USS Ronald Reagan, where I was part of the arresting gear crew, ensuring safe landings

84

for aircraft. My deployments to the North China Sea and the Persian Gulf were challenging but honed my attention to detail and ability to handle stress, traits that have been invaluable ever since.

Q: Tell us about your career post military?

A: I earned a business degree, which led to roles at Lockheed Martin, Visa, and Kaiser. I

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

climbed from an intern to a project manager and later tackled accounts. However, each stint seemed to hit a plateau around the 6-month mark. I’d build solid teams, improve processes, but then the intrigue would fade.

Q: How did you cross paths with Spray-Net?

A:The entrepreneurial

flame was kindling, and franchising caught my eye. Among the franchises I explored, Spray-Net stood out for its professionalism and streamlined processes. It seemed like a space where

my military-honed skills would resonate well.

Q: Would you recommend

Q: How was your training

A: Absolutely. The response

and first year with Spray-Net?

A: It was a whirlwind of

learning, akin to drinking from a firehose. Yet, the support from the HQ's team was instrumental in navigating this phase. A year in, and I feel well-poised for success, running the show with a sense of confidence. I am also in the running to be rookie of the year this year!

Q: What military skills have been pivotal?

A: Attention to detail is

paramount. Also, operating under stress is part of the daily grind in the Navy, and that ability has transitioned seamlessly into managing the demands of a Spray-Net franchise.

Spray-Net to other veterans?

to my request for a veteranowned business decal for my vehicles was swift and supportive. Within 24 hours the marketing team had created it and sent it out to all the veterans in the franchise. Another thing I love about Spray-Net is that the culture here is transparent and holds people accountable, reminiscent of military ethos.

Q: Any insights for veterans considering franchising?

A:: It’s a platform to build a

strong team, fostering a sense of camaraderie akin to military cohorts. With Spray-Net, I’ve been able to foster a culture of loyalty and teamwork, which has been incredibly rewarding.

Q: Any parting thoughts? A: The journey with Spray-Net

has been enriching. Building a cohesive team, and being in a space that values diligence and excellence, has been a fulfilling voyage. For Matt, embarking on the Spray-Net voyage was a blend of exhilaration and learning. If starting a new business is like steering a ship in a storm, the support from the Spray-Net HQ team was a lighthouse. A year into the venture, and the contours of success are obvious. Matt is steering his own Spray-Net ship, with a keen eye on excellence and a

solid team at his side. He may even be crowned rookie of the year! The symbiotic relationship between Matt’s military discipline and the ethos of Spray-Net is a testament to the franchise’s conducive environment for veterans. When Matt sought a veteranowned business insignia, the swift and supportive response was emblematic of the culture at Spray-Net. Now, at the helm of his own Spray-Net franchise, Matt is fostering a culture of camaraderie and excellence. The journey has been a blend of challenges, learning, and rewarding experiences. Building a tight-knit team and leading with the same camaraderie and ethos that he learned in the Navy has proven to be an exceptionally rewarding experience. We are excited to see what lies ahead. Bravo Zulu shipmate! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joshua Emison is Franchise Fastlane's Director of Franchise Development for Spray-Net. A Marine Corps veteran and franchise enthusiastic, he enjoys working with franchises that appreciates their veteran owners, like Spray-Net.

Why This Air Force Veteran Family Invested in TruBlue Home Service Ally

A

s an Air Force veteran, Jeff Sloan has always had a passion for service. After 25 years in the military, he decided to become a local business owner, in large part, so he could continue to serve others in the private industry. He and his wife, Janet Sloan, owned and operated a franchise business for several years, developing a deep love for entrepreneurship and giving back to the community. It was also during this period that they discovered they had a real passion for serving seniors and found themselves wanting to give back in a new way on a new business journey. They knew they had found their next adventure when they discovered TruBlue Home Ally, the home maintenance franchise that focuses on busy adults and seniors. “Going from the military to being business owners made a lot of sense for us,” said Jeff. “We wanted to do something outside of the defense industry, but that would allow us to be part of something bigger than ourselves still, and to serve others. Entrepreneurship offered us that path.” When the Sloans decided to

open their first business back in 2016, they didn’t have any business experience, and they quickly recognized that they couldn’t do it alone. “Franchising is a great model for people who have a desire to become entrepreneurs but don’t necessarily have a background in business,” said Jeff. “A good franchisor will provide all the training and support necessary to enable their franchisees to be successful. It’s in their best interest to do so, because ultimately, if you are successful, they will be successful.” After being in business with their first franchise for six years, the couple decided to move on to something new. “Having developed a passion for serving seniors, we looked for other business opportunities that would allow us to do that, and we came across TruBlue,” said Jeff. “The model of providing seniors with dignity, comfort, independence and safety by enabling them to age in place in their home really appealed to us.” Because TruBlue believes that aging in place starts with a safe home, the company offers ongoing in-home maintenance and senior modification

support to help seniors remain at home for as long as possible. The franchise offers seniors services starting in the form of a free home assessment, and then provides a quote and completes any necessary safety modifications such as installation of ramps and grab bars, widening of doorways, and more. TruBlue owners also offer quick fixes and minor home improvements, as well as quarterly and monthly home service maintenance packages to customers on a recurring basis—resulting in reliable revenue. “We really liked TruBlue’s model of being the home service ally for busy adults and seniors,” said Jeff. “And with the added bonus of enabling seniors to stay in their homes as long as they like with complete peace of mind knowing their homes are well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and safe for all those who live there or visit, we fulfill our desire to serve.”

The Sloans officially opened TruBlue of Greeley, CO in March 2023 and are excited to establish themselves as the most convenient and trustworthy company for seniors and busy families to call on when they need home maintenance services. “We enjoy working together as a couple in business,” said Janet. “For us, it’s really about much more than having a job or earning a living. We want the business to be an outreach, a ministry and a blessing to others.” According to the National Council on Aging, 90% of seniors say they plan to remain in their homes for the next five to ten years. Because of this massive opportunity, TruBlue is actively seeking new franchise owners like the Sloans in markets across the country. “A GOOD FRANCHISOR WILL PROVIDE ALL THE TRAINING AND SUPPORT NECESSARY TO ENABLE THEIR FRANCHISEES TO BE SUCCESSFUL. IT’S IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO DO SO, BECAUSE ULTIMATELY, IF YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL, THEY WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.” —Jeff Sloan, Owner of a TruBlue Franchise

Army Chaplain ‘Leads From Front’ in Setting Example as New Franchise Owner with Bold Growth Plans by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates

t’s an impressive balancing act if one can be considered both a servant and a leader for others, but 49-year-old Ryan Cole of North Royalton, OH has managed to do both. When you hear Cole talk, it’s not surprising what he has accomplished and continues to do for others as one of the newest franchise owners within the Paul Davis Restoration network. Cole is also a member of the United States Armed Forces and as our country celebrates Veterans Day, he continues to serve and has carried some of the core values learned in the military into how he runs his business. Cole first enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1994 as a Combat Engineer. After a gap in service, he accepted a commission in October 2022 as a Chaplain for the 112th Motor Transportation Battalion of the Army National Guard, with seven companies spread throughout Ohio. Cole purchased Paul Davis Restoration of Cleveland West, headquartered in Strongsville, this past January.

“I am the president and CEO of our location,” Cole said. “The primary skill set my military experience brought to the table is to lead from the front. I never ask one of my employees to do something that I would not be willing to do myself. In fact, getting out into the field is sometimes a nice change of pace.” Cole previously spent more than 20 years in the insurance industry. He and his wife owned three Allstate insurance agencies, as well as an independent agency in the Cleveland suburbs. Now on a new professional path, Cole is bullish about his future with Paul Davis. His five-year plan calls for doubling his franchise’s size with multiple

locations. “Paul Davis is fantastic at supporting our plans for growth,” Cole said. Philanthropy is also at the forefront of the hundreds of Paul Davis locations across North America. It’s no surprise the company is known as one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry, with its teams recognized as Difference Makers™, honoring daily the company’s mission to “deliver an experience of extraordinary care while serving people in their time of need.” Cole has firsthand experience – literally – of the difference Paul Davis can make for others when they need it most. In 2016, his family experienced a fire that resulted in the total loss of their home. “That situation shapes the foundation of my understanding of how the things we do make a difference. We restore homes, not just houses. The work we do impacts people on an emotional level. We really are Difference Makers™.” According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, veterans own almost two million businesses and employ more than five million people. And according to a study conducted by the International Franchise Association (IFA),

veterans own one out of every seven franchises despite making up about seven percent of the civilian adult population. Cole is happy and eager to be counted amongst their numbers. “We have learned that if you master the activities you can control, the results will follow,” he said. “We can’t outwork the numbers and the numbers can’t outwork us, so we are just working hard!” ABOUT PAUL DAVIS RESTORATION For more than 55 years, Paul Davis Restoration, Inc., has restored residential and commercial properties damaged by fire, water, mold, storms, and disasters. Military Veteran Uses His Skills From The Navy to Run His Staffing Franchise with Express Employment Professionals. What was your career prior to joining Express Employment Professionals? What industry/role were you in before owning an Express office?

F

ranchising provides countless opportunities for those seeking ownership of their career path. And it’s not every day that a franchisee learns the business he owns is in an industry that helped his mother find her first job in the United States many years ago. Jon Noceda, a California military veteran from the Philippines honed his passion in the Navy and used those skills to become a successful staffing franchise owner

96

JON: Prior to joining Express Employment Professionals as a franchisee, I was in the Navy for 22 years and wore many hats. During my last 3 years in the military, I was a recruiter for medical professionals and recruited for every position from doctors and dentists to medical students. My plans quickly shifted after leaving the military and I immediately attended Discovery Day to learn more about the Express Employment Professionals franchise opportunities. And now, look where we are today! What attracted you to the franchise business model and Express Employment Professionals, specifically? And now that you are an Express Employment Professionals franchisee, what do you like about being part of that franchise business model?

NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

JON:: Initially, I was most attracted to the recruiting and staffing aspect of Express’s franchise business model because there was so much crossover to what I was doing in the military. I really love helping people get connected to new jobs. Though it’s a big company, it never ceases to amaze me that it’s such a tightknit community where the other owners treat one another like brothers and sisters. Anytime you need something, you can send out an email and get an answer in less than an hour. And even with the developers, there’s no question that goes left unanswered. It’s truly day and night when you compare Express’s franchise business model to other franchise business models, which is one of the many reasons why this is such a rewarding career path. How is the future of the business looking and how is the local landscape changing? JON: I’m proud to say that this year has been our best year yet! We’ve surpassed our

goals and the year isn’t even over yet, so we’re really excited to keep this momentum going into 2023. With that said, I think the future of the business is bright for us! Even as the local landscape changes, we remain vigilant because at the end of the day, people will always need jobs which means there will always be a need for our business. Not to mention, we’ve seen industrial buildings popping up like mushrooms in our communities. Even with talks of the economic downturn, we continue to receive pages and pages of job orders from clients because they need people. I remain hopeful and confident that Express will be able to help fill those jobs. What do you think sets Express Employment Professionals apart from other staffing agencies? JON: Most of Express’ major competitors in the staffing industry are corporately owned so they’re considered “big players.” What sets us apart is that all Express offices are individually owned and operated. So, when we shake hands with clients, we are sharing our own personal contact information versus corporate contact information which can really take away

THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS THAT I THINK THE EXPRESS EMPLOYMENT PROFESSIONALS FRANCHISE IS ONE OF THE BEST FRANCHISES TO OWN BUT IT’S UNIQUE IN THAT WE TOUCH ALMOST EVERY INDUSTRY THERE IS TO TOUCH, SO WE ULTIMATELY GET TO SEE THE WHOLE ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE. from the overall job seeking experience regardless of which side you’re on – employer or jobseeker. Plus, we get to be our own decision makers and have established an open-door policy with our clients which is what really differentiates Express from others and further solidifies it as a top franchise. What advice would you give someone else considering franchise ownership? And why do you think a staffing franchise is one of the best franchises to own? JON: If you’re interested, pursue it! There are so many reasons that I think the Express Employment Professionals franchise is one of the best franchises to own but it’s unique in that we touch almost every industry there is to touch, so we ultimately get to see the whole economic landscape. Staffing agencies are essentially the first to

see whether the economy is growing or slowing down, and that’s the beauty of it. Regardless of the economy’s status, people will always need jobs so in turn, there will always be a need for our role and Express gives us the ability to easily pivot as needed. It’s also really important to acknowledge that Express International listens to franchisees. If there’s something specific we need in the field, then that’s what they implement. There are a lot of businesses that you can’t say that about! If you are interested in owning the #1 Staffing Franchise and discovering how successful you can be with Express, visit ExpressFranchising.com.

From Serving the Nation to Serving the Community:

Chris Lackovic's Smooth Transition with Ace Handyman Service Franchise

“Just because the uniform comes off doesn’t mean we stop serving,” says U.S.

Army veteran Chris Lackovic. Life after the military can be a tough transition, but franchising made it easier for Chris. As the owner of two Ace Handyman Services (AHS) territories in Northern Virginia (Fredericksburg and Woodbridge), Chris recognizes the similarities between serving in the military and his community. Lackovic’s military journey began in 1984 when he joined the army as a surveyor in the field artillery. Over the following 39 years, he worked his way up to officer in the field artillery and to program manager in

the Army Acquisition Corps. Eventually, Chris felt that it was time for the next generation to bring their ideas to our Army and nation. Lackovic never thought of himself as a businessman or an entrepreneur. What he did know was that he wanted to serve his local community and maintain a work-life balance. Ace Handyman Services (AHS) spoke to him because he could serve his community while also being a member of it. He wholeheartedly believes that AHS embodies their commitment to the service path and deeply cares about the success of their franchisees. His two territories in Northern Virginia have been running for about 13 months now. Chris is thrilled with the quality of life that is part of the AHS template. “I love the mission set here where we are able to take care of people in the community, but I’m able to come home every night to my family,” says Chris. “I haven’t had that for almost 40 years and that’s pretty special.” Additionally, he gets to work every day with his wife Gretchen, as she serves as the office manager.

100 NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

Chris honed invaluable management skills through his experiences in the military, repeatedly referring to the importance of the Army saying "Mission First, People Always." He applies this saying to franchise management today. Much of Chris’ military experience – being a leader in the army, knowing the ins and outs of the budgetary cycle and how that affects what you’re buying for materials – is applied to franchising and taking care of his community. “I didn’t have a difficult time transitioning at all because I just traded one uniform for another, and doing many of the same things,” says Chris. “I have a servant heart and always have.” Part of owning a local business is being involved in community outreach, which is why Chris attends weekly chamber meetings. Showing up to these meetings helps get one’s name recognized, and people notice the Ace symbol which often strikes up a conversation. Chris thanks Ace Hardware for giving AHS meaningful brand recognition. Having the Ace name helps because it’s instant trust and recognition. “They see how

honest you are, how fair your prices are, how good your work is and how you're different from any other experience they’ve ever had.” Chris and his team make a dedicated effort to understand the community through recognizing the unique demographics within the Northern Virginia territory. The area gets a lot of commuter

traffic, as people live in the suburbs and commute to the higher paying jobs in Washington D.C. and Maryland. Chris and his wife initially only planned to open one location in Woodbridge. However they decided to add Fredericksburg, which is opening up future opportunities from now as more people continue to migrate south. Because of the localcommuter lifestyle, Chris respects the time of his customers, knowing that even a simple repair might mean they need to take the day off to stay home. Being on time, efficient, and getting the job done correctly the first time are key to valuing the customer’s time. The advice Chris gives to veterans looking to get into a franchise is simple. First, don’t be afraid to try

something new. Second, phone a friend. Veterans will support veterans as they’ve walked a common path in life. There are plenty of veterans who choose the franchising path, as they possess similar qualities that you’re looking for in a business – punctuality, dependability, respect, and a clean appearance – making it easy to transition into the service path. Chris says that a lot of veterans will find franchising to be a good fit as it allows them to comfortably transition from a military mindset as they’ll recognize a lot of parallels along the way. “It’s therapeutic to know that we can take what we’ve learned in the military and get home to our communities and still make a difference,” says Chris. “AHS will allow veterans to continue to serve communities, serve honorably and be proud, and take care of people. The craftsmen are the number one asset here. Mission first but people always. That’s why I came to Ace.” MORE ABOUT ACE HANDYMAN SERVICES AHS (Ace Handyman Services) is a national franchise and subsidiary of Ace Hardware. Each franchise provides and dispatches reliable and multi-skilled craftspeople who can efficiently complete over 1,162 household projects including drywall, painting, floors, and carpentry.

How a Former Military Career Prepared This Mosquito Hunters Franchisee to be a Successful Business Owner by Nick Sorgani, Franchise Business Coach, Mosquito Hunters

A

fter an impressive career in the military, serving in both the United States Coast Guard and Army, Todd Thomas was ready to challenge himself with business ownership. His time in the armed forces taught him a long list of commendable traits for leadership, and he thought franchising would be a great way to apply those skills. After leaving the military and connecting with a franchise advisor to review a number of options, Thomas stumbled upon Mosquito Hunters, the 130-plus-location

pest control franchise that services residential and commercial clients under the Happinest Brands umbrella. Mosquito Hunters’ subscription-based mosquito, general pest, and rodent control services offered a streamlined model for Thomas to run a business from his home, enjoy nature and have a recurring customer base. “The brand checked all my boxes,” Thomas explained. “I wanted a home service business and something where I don't need any type of real estate investment. I wanted something where I could be outside, and not tied to a desk all of the time. I was also seeking something with a renewing revenue, membership type model. He spent a couple of months vetting the business and doing diligent research, conducted several “Meet A Hunter” calls with existing franchise owners and then spent the day with the Mosquito Hunters

corporate team. Thomas signed a franchise agreement with Mosquito Hunters in and started operations out of northern New Jersey in early 2020. With the at that time spiking pandemic keeping the general public home and causing increased spend in the home service sector, Thomas was busy from the get-go. Thomas’ Mosquito Hunters operations took off. The business was successful so quickly that it even took him by surprise: He was receiving so much business the first season that he had to quickly hire team technicians and an accountant. By only the second season, he had already made back the money he had spent on the initial franchise investment. “It has gone exceptionally well. We ramped up much

“IN THE MILITARY, THERE’S NO ROOM FOR EXCUSES OR ALLOWING EXCUSES TO DICTATE ANY TYPE OF SHORTCOMING OR FAILURE. I'VE NEVER ALLOWED EXCUSES TO STOP ME, WHETHER IT'S WITH HIRING OR FINDING NEW CLIENTS.” —Todd Thomas , Owner of a Mosquito Hunter's Franchise more quickly than I could have anticipated. The growth has been great, so we recently expanded our territory and added more zip codes that we now service,” he said. With that expansion, Thomas’s operations now span from the Newton/ Lafayette area to the Mahwah/ West, Milford, New Jersey area. The growth has his company servicing hundreds of customers, with hopes of his more recent expansion causing his business to double by the end of 2023. Should the trend continue in Thomas’ favor, he plans to

add two more vehicles to his fleet and hire more full-time employees. As for what he appreciates the most about running his Mosquito Hunters, Thomas said he likes applying the skills he learned in the military as an employer. Those valiant characteristics have helped him become an effective boss and franchise owner “In the military, there’s no room for excuses or allowing excuses to dictate any type of shortcoming or failure. I've never allowed excuses to stop me, whether it's with hiring

or finding new clients. Also, punctuality is a big thing in the military, and being punctual is something our clients appreciate. When we say we're going to be somewhere, we're there on time,” he explained. “I like training our technicians, passing those skills on, and watching them develop professionally.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nick Sorgani is a tenured franchise business coach with over a decade of franchisee support experience. He and his team are responsible for coaching and mentoring year two and beyond franchisees within the growing Mosquito Hunters system.

Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Nick Otte and I currently work as the VP of Production for Five Star Bath Solutions Corporate team. I served two enlistments in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed on the East Coast for most of my service with many training evolutions taking me throughout the United States. I was fortunate enough to deploy to Afghanistan where I served as a machine gunner as well as QRF (Quick Reaction Force). How did you discover Five Star Bath Solutions? After serving my country, I started and opened a contracting company with

a fellow Marine. Later in my career, I met the owner of Five Star Bath Solutions and fell in love with the product. What makes the Five Star Bath Solutions product different? As a business owner and contractor, I am always looking for better angles, products, services, or methods to use as a competitive advantage against other companies. When I discovered Five Star Bath Solutions, I knew this product was simply better! It is easier to work with and the final product looks great. Then I had the opportunity to meet the Five Star Bath Solutions team and I knew I had to become part of it.

What is your favorite part about being in the Five Star Bath Solutions franchise?

The answer is simple. Culture. Culture is a big part of my life as the military builds you that way. The Five Star Bath Solutions team gives you a community. For Veterans looking for a culture to become a part of again and get that sense of community, Five Star has it. As a Marine, I loved that I was a part of something larger, something bigger than myself. Five Star could never replace that feeling but it sure does help!

25 Year Veteran Greg Harkrider is Proud to Call Himself a Lawn Doctor Franchisee by Eric Martin, Senior Vice President of Franchise Development, Happinest Brands

B

orn in Texas and now living in Jacksonville, Florida, Greg Harkrider spent most of his teenage years helping his father with lawn and maintenance work, growing a true liking for hands on labor. Wanting to serve his country, Harkrider decided to join the Navy when he was 18, spending 25 years both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. After retiring in 2012 and spending a few years flying for the airlines, Harkrider knew he wanted to get involved in a small business of his own and he discovered the lawn-care franchise Lawn Doctor. When beginning to consider franchise ownership, Harkrider connected with his lifelong friend of 30 years who was already a franchisee with another home service concept. His friend spoke highly of his experiences with the franchise industry and discussed the freedom and flexibility the business

provided. He recommended for Harkrider to investigate available franchise opportunities instead of trying to start a business from scratch. Harkrider wanted to get involved in a service business that provided lifestyle flexibility, multiple revenue streams and recurring

116 NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

revenue, so the lawn-care franchise industry seemed like a great fit. He made the commitment and launched his business in the Spring of 2019, and his since become one of the top performing Lawn Doctor franchisees in the Southeast region of the country.

“I connected with a franchise consultant who asked what I was specifically looking for in a franchise. He presented a few different options, and looking back, I knew pretty quickly that Lawn Doctor was the business I wanted to move forward with. Lawn Doctor is the cream of the crop within the lawncare space, and one of the top brands in general within the home services sector. I instantly connected with the corporate team, and everything was laid out and easy to follow, and that’s what I was looking for -- there were no loopholes and the process to get started was simple. As I think about the investigation process, we went through years ago, it was our conversations with a number of the franchise owners at Lawn Doctor that really sealed the deal for my wife and co-owner Sherri and I,” said Harkrider. According to Senior VP of Franchise Development, Eric Martin, Greg’s background as a veteran set him up for a perfect transition into franchise ownership. Veterans are usually well equipped to run franchises because they are instinctively used to following processes and systems. “It’s a real honor when a veteran is drawn to our franchise business model. Greg follows our proven process and system as good as anyone, and he knows how to execute on the plan. He is laser focused on customer satisfaction, which is a big

reason his location has grown rapidly over the past several years and become a top-rated provider in the Jacksonville community. He and Sherri have built an incredible business that is showing no signs of slowing down,” said Martin. Greg and Sherri credit the success to their dedication and excitement to serve the Jacksonville community. They are now spending their time working on the business, versus in the business, as they did in the earliest stages. The dynamic duo has built a loyal local team to manage day to day operations, so they can do what they enjoy most, which is getting out to meet new customers, and focusing on their marketing strategies to keep new business flowing. “We really liked how Greg and Sherri set the foundation of their business up in the early stages, they built their house out of bricks and put themselves in position to grow what has become an empire over multiple territories,” said Martin. “We love seeing the divide and conquer mentality, even if that means a spouse or partner can only dedicate a few hours a week here and there. Even with minimal assistance, it can make a world of difference in the ramp up period, and it has paid off in a big way for the Harkrider’s.”

“Being a veteran has set me up for success with the Lawn Doctor business model. My Father and the Navy gave me a strong work ethic and the will to lead, and it has flown me right into running a small business of my own. I went from being an Officer in Charge of 150 people to now owning a successful franchise. I might not be holding 150 people accountable now, but I’m dedicated to my business, my local team and to serving the Jacksonville community,” said Harkrider. The couple is as excited for their future growth today as they were several years ago and looking forward to expanding even further and serving the Jacksonville market for many years to come. “I’m technically a retired veteran, but let me tell you, I have no plans of slowing down. Owning a Lawn Doctor has given me a new purpose,” said Harkrider.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Eric Martin specializes in helping people who have outgrown their current career path and are seeking for more fulfillment in what they do for a living, explore the world of franchising. As the Senior Vice President of Franchise Development, he is responsible for the growth Happinest Brands, which currently consists of home service concepts Lawn Doctor, Mosquito Hunters, ecomaids, Elite Window Cleaning, and Sparkle Squad.

Koala’s Warm Embrace:

A Veteran’s Home Improvement Story oala Insulation of Fort Lauderdale, a highquality insulation contractor serving homeowners, contractors, and property owners, announced its partnership with Military Makeover, a home improvement series dedicated to rebuilding the homes and the lives of military veterans. The makeover series is hosted and co-produced by former talk show host Montel Williams, a Marine Corps and Navy veteran himself.

Honoring a Heroine’s Service Koala Insulation will provide new insulation as part of a major home improvement for Michelle Dingee, a United States Air Force veteran living in Hollywood, Florida.

Michelle’s family has a long history of military service, and she was proudly the first female in her family to join the military. Enlisting in October 2000, Michelle trained as a medic at Sheppard Air Force Base and Scott Air Force Base before her first station at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. In her 14-year military career, Michelle traveled the world treating soldiers returning from the front lines, witnessing the horrors of warfare as well as the toll it takes on human life. These experiences still haunt Michelle, who has shared that she battles with PTSD, depression, and anxiety that developed during her time in service.

“Michelle’s story really hit home for us”, shared David Ludeman, Koala Insulation franchise owner in Fort Lauderdale. “We are beyond proud to be part of creating a more comfortable and energyefficient home for Michelle. It’s the least we can do to honor her service and the sacrifices she has made for our country.” Nine out of ten homes in America are under-insulated, leading to high electric bills and inconsistent temperatures in the home. Due to insufficient insulation in her attic, Michelle’s

home was no exception. She was consistently dealing with significant temperature fluctuations from one room to another, even with all her windows and doors closed. The team at Koala Insulation of Fort Lauderdale tackled the lack of adequate insulation in her home’s attic by installing blown-in fiberglass insulation to increase the insulation’s R-value. With new attic insulation, Michelle won’t have to run her air conditioning as often, she’ll save money on her electric bill, and her entire home will have a more consistent temperature.

About Koala Insulation Koala Insulation is an insulation installation franchise that seeks to provide homeowners across the U.S. with money and energy-saving insulation services while providing local business owners and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to own and operate a successful and lucrative franchise. They offer franchisees the opportunity to work with proprietary equipment and start their franchise location with low startup costs and low franchise fees. They are rapidly expanding across the United States and are on a mission to reduce overall energy waste and stop greenhouse gas emissions from homes and businesses.

Veteran Franchisee Tania Cheng Finds Her Mission with Schooley Mitchell by Joe Weppler, Senior Communications Specialist, Schooley Mitchell

I

f you asked Captain Dr. Tania Cheng what her greatest strength is, she will tell you that it’s adaptability. From growing up on the sparkling beaches of Hawaii and working at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Houston, Texas, her SurgEx training in Germany or humanitarian aid for children in South America,

her service in the Middle East or commanding her unit at Joint Base LewisMcChord, Dr. Cheng has honed her communication, leadership, and bedside manner through lessons learned during her military service. “My time and training in the military, and specifically trauma medicine, has

124 NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

shown me that patients come to us with a list of symptoms. Those symptoms are a list of needs or pain points. It’s our job as diagnosticians to help identify whether the pain in their side is from getting old or they have a lead pipe sticking out of their flank. My favorite Schooley Mitchell clients have approached me the same way: ‘I have a problem, can you help?’” Tani said. Tania’s journey into a life of military and medical service started with her upbringing. Both of Tania’s grandfathers served. On her mother’s side, a Marine Corps Corporal who stormed Iwo Jima and much of the Pacific. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he lied about his age to join and fight in the Pacific Theatre. On her father’s side, a General under Chiang Kaishek who reportedly had been the only man to go

out during an active aerial bombardment to see when it was clear for his people to retreat from China to Tawain. He’s credited for saving those with him that day, including Chiang Kaishek as they were together on the last flight out. “The reason why I joined the military was to carry on the family tradition of service,” she said. While her family may have been the impetus for her joining, the military and medical service defined her bedside manner in the ER, as well as Schooley Mitchell. “In medicine, we have a term called ‘triage’. It’s an old French word that means ‘to sort or select’. We were taught that Napoleon started the practice of marking his wounded. In a modern ER or mass casualty incident, we triage the wounded into priority groups. Those that can walk and talk, those that can survive delayed care, those that won’t survive without immediate care, and sadly, those that won’t survive no matter how much effort we put into treating them,” Tania said. “Many of our clients are suffering and focusing on symptoms. They may not have enough for advertising, they need money for a new truck or maybe for expansion, or they just need to hire more staff and can’t afford to. That’s when I get to make a house call.”

WHILE HER FAMILY MAY HAVE BEEN THE IMPETUS FOR HER JOINING, THE MILITARY AND MEDICAL SERVICE DEFINED HER BEDSIDE MANNER IN THE ER, AS WELL AS SCHOOLEY MITCHELL. “So much of what we do comes in the timing. If we can identify where you are bleeding money from early enough, you’re a green ticket, a “walkie talkie”, so to speak. We don’t make much as an office, but I love these clients. They are doing well and just want us to verify they are saving the most money,” she said. “Yellow and red tickets? Those guys have been bleeding for a while. They need our help fast. They may need extra help from a local BNI or Chamber as well. While it’s not as rewarding as saving a life, saving a company feels great.” Schooley Mitchell’s mission is to find savings for our clients by optimizing their

expenses. Our unique contingency pay model means our clients don’t pay a nickel unless we can save them a dime, which gives our franchisees the opportunity to develop unique relationships with their clients. Coincidentally, that is one of the things Tania loves most about leading a different kind of team in Kemah, Texas. “We’re never going to give you bad news. Either we can find you savings or you get the peace of mind knowing that your bills are optimized,” Tania said. Tania’s service to the military and distinguished career as a medical professional have made her the person she is today, and to us at Schooley Mitchell, she shines as an example of what you can do when you carry yourself with confidence and go after your goals. We are thankful every day for the service of Tania and her contemporaries, and we are distinctly proud to call her a member of the Schooley Mitchell family.

It was in Wichita that Ricky's life took a turn. Instead of immersing himself in military regulations, he was found absorbed in nutrition books. His answer to a questioning officer? A bold declaration with the Encyclopedia of Body Building in hand: "This is my future." Struggling with his body image, Ricky found solace and inspiration in that book. Within six months, he transformed himself, shedding over 50 lbs. The metamorphosis wasn't just physical – it ignited a passion within him. Soon, he was crafting nutritional and workout plans for himself and those around him. 1995 saw Ricky transition from the Air Force into the

world of entrepreneurship. With the unwavering support of his parents and a burning passion, he entered the supplement industry. Success followed him, and soon, he expanded his empire to five locations. However, not all was smooth sailing. Frustrations with the franchise system led him to break away and join another franchise. But Ricky's true north was his unyielding commitment to his customers, and when he felt that was compromised, he decided to carve his own path. Thus, in 2015, NutritionHQ. was born. More than a supplement store, it was a sanctuary for anyone and everyone, regardless of their fitness level. Ricky's vision was clear: an inclusive, welcoming space where individual needs are prioritized. Using the InBody machine, which allowed clients to track their progress, was a testament

to his commitment to tangible results. The transformation from a small-town boy to a military man and then to a successful entrepreneur wasn't a linear journey. But the skills Ricky acquired in the military – systems, processes, and leadership – became invaluable in his

entrepreneurial ventures. Today, NutritionHQ. is not just a store but a mission. A mission to fuel the best days of the community through personalized nutrition, expert advice, and most importantly, a connection. Ricky's legacy is a testament to the idea that with passion, dedication, and the right support, anyone can change not just their own life but also impact countless others. Ricky's 10-year vision is that There are 100+ NutritionHQ. stores across North America, and every person who walks through the doors feels understood and impacted through nutrition, coaching, and connection with a community.

Payroll Vault Veteran Owner Never Stops Serving and Saluting

S

erving community and country is the hallmark of Kevin Nash. The Navy veteran and coowner of Payroll Vault of San Diego South Bay (along with his wife Elsie) may have put in his time with the U.S. Navy, but his service has never ended. Every October, you will find the local business owner and active member of the National City Chamber of Commerce celebrating the Navy’s birthday (October 13) with the Annual Salute to Navy Luncheon. As a business sponsor, volunteer, and Navy veteran, he helps organize the event that serves and honors hundreds of active enlisted sailors and Navy officers. “This is our 66th year, and it is a really special event,” shared Nash. “Our men and women of service are treated to a delicious Hawaiian lunch, entertainment, speakers, and a scholarship ceremony. The event this year will also benefit the Maui Fires Foundation. It’s just my way to give back to the Navy for all it has given me and honor those who help protect us.” Kevin’s own military journey began when he joined the U.S.

Navy at 17 years old, “looking to see more of the world, learn a trade, and of course, support my country” during the Vietnam War era. All of that happened for Nash, plus he found Elsie, his

wife of 46 years. Their first date was on his 18th birthday. As an aviation electrician’s mate, he traveled all around the Pacific, including Subic Bay, Philippines, Pusan,

South Korea, and two years stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. He served with the VF-114 Aardvarks, an F-14 Tomcat squadron at NAS (Naval Air Station) Miramar, California, and eventually deployed again onboard the USS America for a Mediterranean cruise. When his six years were up, he left the Navy as a second-class petty officer and began his civilian life armed with all the skills, integrity, and honor his time in the service had given him. “The U.S. Navy gave me all the skills, both personally and professionally, that provided the foundation for me to build our life together,” said Nash. He became an electrician for Grumman Aerospace, supporting base operations at Miramar, where he once again worked on F-14 Tomcats. For 16 years, he continued

deploying with Navy squadrons and continued to grow professionally. FROM FIGHTER JETS TO FRANCHISING The Nashes had the epiphany many successful franchise owners have had — and wish they had had earlier. “We both worked corporate jobs and commuted with lots of windshield time and decided if we can work so hard for someone else, we could do it for ourselves,” exclaimed Nash. The choice to sign on with Payroll Vault in 2016 was an easy one. Payroll Vault offers complete payroll and workforce management solutions to small businesses in local communities. Elsie’s background was in HR and payroll, and by that time, Kevin was in business development as a Global Product Manager in the automotive connector industry. Kevin’s experience in developing processes and customer care was a good fit for building Payroll Vault in their California community.

“Looking back, moving forward with the Payroll Vault business was a blessing,” recall the Nashes. “It allowed us both the flexibility to divide our time between running the business and tending to our family’s needs.” Today, Nash focuses on partnering with local community banks to help more small businesses with their payroll and workforce management needs. And he still credits the U.S. Navy for his disciplined approach to work, and life in general. Does Nash recommend franchise ownership for veterans? “Absolutely! Every chance I get. The military provides the skills and character that can make someone successful in any industry,” explained Nash. To Kevin Nash and all veterans, thank you for your service, and happy Veteran’s Day.

Experience in the Property Preservation Industry Makes This Army Vet a Great Fit by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates

S

tephen Edwards is a jack of all trades and is already serving him well in his new career path. Last September, the 42-yearold Terrell, Texas, resident launched operations as an owner within the Pillar To Post Home Inspectors® network, the largest home inspection franchise in North America. Edwards serves homebuyers and sellers throughout Dallas, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Hunt, and Rockwall counties, all an hour East of Dallas. Edwards isn’t exaggerating when he says he’s had a “very diversified” working career. He joined the U.S. Army as an infantryman when he was only 17 – which required his parents to sign a waiver since he wasn’t yet 18 – and served his country for four years. “I am third generation military. Both my father and my grandfather served in the Army. My grandfather served on the same post as Elvis Presley while he was in. Although he said he never met him. He worked as a mechanic. My dad was a tanker which had us living in Germany for a couple years and that where I started Kindergarten and 1st grade before we came back to

Texas. I joined the Army right out of high school at the age of 17. During my service I received the Overseas Service & Army Service Ribbons, four Achievement and National

Defense Service Medals, and was recognized with Expert Rifle/Grenade Marksman and Expert Infantry Badges. After his service, Edwards spent time in the property

preservation field, both on the inspection side and hazard insurance claim side, where he managed multiple teams. He also spent a decade managing call centers with a focus on auto loans and mortgages. Edwards was most recently head of IT for a software firm that builds marketing software for banks and credit unions. And it should not be overlooked that Edwards spent every summer from the time he was ten until he joined the Army wiring houses for his grandfather who was a master electrician and owned his own company. “My work experience has allowed me to gain knowledge in multiple areas,” Edwards said. “During my time in the property preservation industry, I reviewed thousands of inspection reports identifying deficiencies and recommending repairs to file insurance claims. And growing up wiring houses made me very familiar with proper construction of homes. I have held leadership roles in all my positions, and I have been very effective in building great relationships with employees I still talk to today. That will continue to help me grow my business by setting the right example for staff and leading from the front.” Like many others over the last several years, Edwards’ impetus for a career switch was getting laid off in February, his second in the last 10 years. Edwards said he applied for more than 500 jobs and received only three callbacks. With a market flooded with talent, Edwards determined his best move was

PILLAR TO POST HOME INSPECTORS CHECKS THE BOX FOR ADDING VALUE AND HELPING PEOPLE TO BUY A HOME AND BE CONFIDENT IN WHAT IS MOST LIKELY THE LARGEST PURCHASE OF THEIR LIFE. THIS IS SOMETHING I WILL TAKE A LOT OF PRIDE IN.” to go into business for himself. That’s when he came across Pillar To Post Home Inspectors and found the perfect match for his variety of talents. “I instantly thought that Pillar To Post Home Inspectors was right up my alley. I especially liked the idea of dealing with a new situation every day,” Edward said. “I went through the discovery process and by the third conversation I was sold and knew this was going to be the next stage of my life. Pillar To Post Home Inspectors checks the box for adding value and helping people to buy a home and be confident

in what is most likely the largest purchase of their life. This is something I will take a lot of pride in.” Home inspections are a vital part of the real estate sector, providing buyers and sellers with reliable information about the condition and value of a property. The U.S. building inspector industry, measured by revenue, is estimated to have a market size of $4.9 billion according to global research firm IBISWorld. Pillar to Post Home Inspectors has been at the forefront with its outstanding and innovative technologies that were introduced just in time to provide contactless home inspections during the pandemic. Edwards is a perfect fit for Pillar To Post Home Inspectors and the business model affords him the opportunity to structure his business as he sees fit, whether hiring employees or doing it all himself. According to Clever Real Estate, 72 percent of homebuyers who purchased in 2021 or 2022 have regrets over their home purchase. The most common factors that contributed to their remorse were spending too much money and rushing into buying. And there are some other important considerations in addition to a home’s square footage and number of bathrooms. Clever’s survey also found that almost half of homebuyers – 43 percent – made financial concessions like waiving a home inspection amid fierce competition for

homes, according to CNBC. And skipping that home inspection can be costly. A survey from insurance firm Hippo found that most homeowners – 77 percent – had to pay for an unexpected repair within the first year of owning a house. Two-thirds of respondents said those fixes cost more than $1,000, said the CNBC report. “The population growth in

Texas is exciting. There is so much opportunity to build a business in the booming home services segment. I believe I am well positioned to take advantage of that with Pillar To Post Home Inspectors,” Edwards said. ABOUT PILLAR TO POST HOME INSPECTORS® Founded in 1994, Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is the largest
