s a freshly minted MBA in June 2002, I had originally thought to move back to NY and continue with a finance career. However, after the devastation of 9/11 I looked East, then West and decided it was time to do something new. California beckoned and with it a wonderful connection with a group of entrepreneurs who would forever alter the course of my business reality. FirstService Brands (then known as The Franchise Company or TFC) had been acquiring companies and I had the rare good fortune to meet Mike Cassidy who Charlie Chase had recently moved into a senior leadership role. Mike offered me the opportunity of a lifetime and with that began my franchise journey. Over the course of the next 10 years, I was fortunate to meet and learn from amazing leaders like Tom Wood, Dan Steward, Rich Wilson, Robb King, Steve Rogers and many others. To properly thank everyone would take more pages than this magazine has. Needless to say, the alumni network that this amazing group of entrepreneurs has generated reaches throughout franchising. I am proud to say I am a FirstService alum. This organization sprang from the youthful exuberance of College Pro Painters and since its inception in 1971 has continuously perfected the art of serving others. It’s future is even brighter today as their businesses have grown significantly under the careful stewardship of Charlie Chase. THE PANDEMIC WAS THE PERFECT STORM FOR PROPERTY SERVICES FRANCHISES. With people stuck at home, soaring property values and cash piling up from missed vacations and travel Americans moved en masse to beautify their homes. Flooring, painting and organization ranked high on the lists of jobs being done. With the massive real estate surge as people moved from cities to the suburbs and country, the home inspection business boomed and with inclement weather comes damage from flood, fires and other catastrophes. In short, the pandemic touched every business FirstService Brands is engaged with in a positive way. With their mix of humility, entrepreneurial spirit and can do attitude, the thousands of franchise owners of these iconic brands kept their teams together, kept their clients happy and kept their businesses growing. The best of franchising was on display as it has been since 1971 when a group of college students got together to make a few extra bucks painting houses and the lessons that they learned from working together still echo through the ethos of the entire team at FirstService and through the many executives throughout franchising that have been fortunate to have stood on the shoulders of these giants.

“SUPPLY ALWAYS COMES ON THE HEELS OF DEMAND” – Robert Collier 16
he home improvement and repair sector is now a $420 billion industry, having grown by almost 3% in 2020, per a recent study by Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS). Statistica estimated that by 2024 that number is expected to climb to $500 billion. People’s interest in improving their homes is stronger than ever. Americans spent so much more time in their homes during the past 18 months; the urge to update and improve their living spaces seems to be stronger than ever. The JCHS survey showed that near the end of March 2020, 60% of respondents had already begun one DIY home project. Less than six weeks later, by early May, that figure had grown to 80%. Of course, not all of the home improvement projects in the works (or being planned) are DIY ones. Many homeowners will want the assistance of a professional. And there is one area in particular that many homes need improving—their insulation. In 2015, the North American Insulation Manufacturer’s Association (NAIMA) estimated that as many as 90% of existing U.S. homes were under-
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
insulated. When homes do not have enough insulation, residents end up wasting energy, losing money, and decreasing the home’s overall comfort.
A GROWING OPPORTUNITY All this interest in home improvement translates to is an amazing opportunity for anyone considering a home improvement franchise business. Opting for an insulation-focused franchise addresses the need that so many homes already have. It also meets the growing environmental awareness among American consumers. Improving a home’s insulation offers a win-win for homeowners — it saves them money in future energy costs and benefits the environment by eliminating all that wasted energy. Koala Insulation, a nationally established f ranchise that provides high-quality blown and spray foam insulation services, is prepared to help
entrepreneurs seize this opportunity. Koala Insulation saves homeowners money on their energy bills; at the same time, it offers franchisees a lucrative and fulfilling business pathway. Homeowners that use Koala Insulation save an average of 5% annually on their electricity bills and more than 10% on their natural gas bills. The Koala Insulation mission is to reduce overall energy waste in the U.S. from one of the most prominent creators of greenhouse gas emissions— our homes and commercial and industrial buildings. BENEFITS OF BEING A KOALA INSULATION FRANCHISEE Koala Insulation franchisees can work with custom Koalabuilt equipment and start their franchise location with low startup costs. And thanks to the support offered by Koala’s infrastructure, franchise partners do not need any previous experience in the insulation industry. A Koala Insulation franchise offers a proven business model. The initial investment is low, with the initial franchise fee under $50,000. The total investment is less than $166,000. Because a Koala Insulation franchise is mobile, there’s no need to spend money on a lease or worry about dealing with landlords. And the sliding scale royalty means the more franchisees sell, the less they pay. But the benefits aren’t all financial. Franchisees also will enjoy the regular working hours
provided by a Koala Insulation franchise. Additionally, they have the option of following a semi-absentee or owneroperator business model, depending on the level of time they want to commit to the business. Finally, Koala Insulation is committed to the success of its franchisees, offering all the training they need. From learning the basics of the industry to helping franchisees obtain a master-level of certification readiness, Koala Insulation is there every step of the way as franchisees get their business up and running, sharing their advanced and proprietary technology. That assistance includes proven marketing and lead
generation. Franchisees benefit from Koala Insulation’s fair advertising fund and technology fees, both of which help them grow and promote their new business. Suppose you have dreamed of going into business for yourself but were worried about striking out independently. In that case, a Koala Insulation franchise offers the best of both worlds—be your own boss with the support and guidance of experts available whenever you need it. Finally, franchisees will appreciate that their new business is not only helping their neighbors save money and improve the comfort of their homes, but it is also doing good for the environment at the same time.

THE TIME IS NOW The environment is on everyone’s mind right now, in light of growing concerns about climate change. As more and more communities search for ways to combat global warming, restrictions on energy usage are anticipated to increase to lower the environmental impact heating, and cooling homes puts on the planet. Koala Insulation is uniquely positioned to help prospective franchisees capitalize on this urgent need. And Koala Insulation is surprisingly recession-resistant, thanks to the fact that their insulation helps both new constructions and existing homes. The reality is few independent insulators have successfully educated homeowners about the benefits of proper insulation on their homes, wallets, and the environment. Unlike its competitors, Koala Insulation guarantees homeowners will see savings in both their energy usage and their power bills over the lifetime of their home. Whether it is a private home or another building, Koala

Insulation’s services can meet the need. The company offers energy waste analysis, air sealing, energy efficient covers, and crawl space encapsulations on top of its comprehensive lineup of insulation products and services. WHAT DO FRANCHISEES SAY Koala Insulation has more than 15 years of experience as a successful franchisor based in Melbourne, Florida. For many franchisees, Koala Insulation stands apart because of the bright future it offers them. Bruce Hamer is co-owner of the Jacksonville, Florida franchise, along with his wife, Karay. Bruce has been able to fulfill his dream of being a business owner thanks to Koala Insulation. During his journey, he researched many opportunities but was struck by how Koala Insulation allowed him to provide job opportunities for employees and give back to the community. He also appreciates that Koala Insulation offers a service to its customers that is an added value to their
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
homes—both in terms of being green and saving money. Karay has been impressed by the training experience Koala Insulation has provided. “It has been a wonderful experience,” she shares. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot, and I’m ready to put it to use.” Ben Golden is the territory manager for the Northwest Houston Koala Insulation location. He and his wife chose the franchise after seeing the difference new insulation made in their own home. “We saw the impact it could have on the comfort of the house as well as the financial savings that can be associated with it. We’re excited to bring that to the Houston marketplace.” He also was impressed by the training experience Koala Insulation offered. “We’ve gone through everything from hands-on to walking through the why behind the science behind it and how insulation can impact people’s lives.” Construction and home repairs are some of the fastest-growing industries in the country right now, and Koala Insulation offers anyone interested in owning their own business an ideal way to capitalize on this opportunity. oel Moss does not mince words when he describes the everyday work of Paul Davis Restoration of Santa Clarita, one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry: “This industry is reactive, fast-paced and challenging with high demands,” he says matter-offactly. With the Dixie fire – the largest in California’s recorded history consuming over 500k acres – raging in Northern California, the Mosses know firsthand what dangers can be wrought, professionally… and personally. We stand ready to assist in the clean up after this event. Like we have in past years for the Sand fire, Creek, Skirball, Thomas, Tick, Wolsey Fire and the Napa fires in ’20. In October 2019, the Tick fire forced a mass evacuation of more than 40,000 residents in northern Los Angeles County, including the Mosses. But that never stopped them and their entire Paul Davis team from supporting homeowners at local evacuation centers and in their own neighborhoods. “Being able to assist so many of our friends and
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
neighbors during that massive wildfire helped Susan and I worry less about our own home, which was also under evacuation orders at the time. The huge need gave us a purpose and we focused intensely on helping our community recover,” Joel Moss said. “The Tick fire burned thousands of acres and left hundreds of homes in need of restoration – and not just f rom flames. People think that if your house didn’t burn, everything’s OK – but so many of our clients sustained horrible smoke damage. And many of them reported breathing problems on top of contents damage. It was fulfilling to help so many of our neighbors put their lives back together, while also protecting their health and the health of their loved ones.” For more than 55 years, Paul Davis has restored residential and commercial properties damaged by fire, water, storms, mold, and other disasters and has offered cleaning
services for biohazards such as COVID-19. Paul Davis is a onestop disaster mitigation and restoration company. It is the insurance industry’s restoration expert and recognized as one of The Best Franchises to Open in 2021. Joel Moss, 59, had been a licensed general contractor since 1988 and in 2010 the couple looked to expand Joel’s construction business and considered adding mitigation services. “However, we found it very difficult to do independently,” Susan Moss said. “In 2011 we began to investigate buying a Paul Davis franchise. The interview was successful, and we found the company to have strong business ethics and integrity. We followed through and purchased Paul Davis and haven’t looked back.” Ten years later, the Mosses have plans to become one of the top 20 performing franchises in the Paul Davis network within the next five years. They’ve accomplished their success by keeping an extremely keen eye on detail and organization. On the reconstruction side, they plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects from start to finish according to schedule, specification and budget. On the mitigation side, they establish relationships with agents and adjusters and property managers by communication with insurance companies and clients, monitor guidelines and quality work specific to insurance programs and more.
“If you stay organized, you will be able to manage your business instead of your business managing you,” Susan Moss said. The Mosses truly never know what they will encounter when they open their office doors each morning. For example, last year their work included the restoration of a Santa Clarita home of which 80 percent was affected by a fire resulting from a neighbor shooting off illegal fireworks. Smoke was in the
walls, furniture, and all of the family’s possessions. The fire department had to break ceilings to put out embers, the roof was destroyed, as well as damage to the kitchen, bedrooms, and plumbing. "We were on the scene ASAP with a contents crew and mitigation team. We packed out and transported all of the contents to our Valencia facility for deodorizing, cleaning and storage until the repairs were complete and cleaned up and removed the

burned materials, framing, drywall and more,” recalled Maria Melikian of Paul Davis, in describing only the start of Paul Davis’ work. During the social unrest of last year, the Paul Davis team found themselves doing quite a bit of commercial work. They boarded up a major retail chain store in the Santa Monica area after looters struck. “Another restoration company was afraid to go into the area because of the continued social unrest, yet we secured the property,” Joel Moss said. “We also did preemptive structure protection during that period in time to prevent looting of property damage during demonstrations in the area.” In the past few weeks alone, the Mosses and their Paul Davis team have dried out and repaired a couple of dental
offices, repaired a dry cleaner, and restored all of them to full capacity within a few days, not to mention cleaning and rebuilding a multi-family building after a fire in a carport affected multiple units in the complex. Trying to stay a step ahead of disaster, the Mosses also offer a useful service to property managers – EPP (Emergency Preparedness Planning) – that allows Paul Davis to assess their properties and identify critical areas that need to be secured in the event of a disaster. “During this process we also uncover possible areas that might present concern so that corrective measures can be taken to avoid negative outcomes or avert losses altogether,” Susan Moss said. “I believe we offer a level
of professionalism that is appreciated and respected by other professionals.” Looking back, the Mosses were destined to do the work they do. When the couple first met, Susan had experienced terrible water damage to her home. But even though Joel was a contractor at the time, a mitigation company had to be brought in to restore her home. “We ended up getting married and opening our own mitigation company. It was fate,” Joel Moss said. Paul Davis is on track to have 350 franchises by the end of the year and has California territories available in Simi Valley, San Fernando, Santa Monica, and Pasadena. ou’ve heard it said there are only two things you can count on in life and that is death & taxes. I would contend there is a third component you can bank on, “Things deteriorate over time”! There is an actual chart that accountants use to apply to the life expectancy of products that are used in our homes and businesses. This is known as the “Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart for Homes” Source: https://www.nachi.org/ florida-life-expectancy.htm Here are a few examples:
28
• Paint: 7-10 years • Roof: 15 years + • Air Conditioning: 5-7 years There is no question that the property service industry is based upon NEEDS, not wants. Where does that leave the business owner? The key is not to convince your customer to fix their roof, for the roof itself by leaking will let them know. The business owner’s job is to provide a better product, perform a greater service and create a better customer experience and SHOW UP! This is called gaining market share.
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
In years past gaining market share was a much more complex matter. Today it’s a matter of SHOWING UP. That’s right - just show up. Have you listened to your friends and family and colleagues complaining about how they have tried to get a repair done and the contractor never shows up or if they do, they are unprofessional, overpriced and lack commitment? Customers want service providers that will answer the phone and that can be trusted to do what they say. You do this and you will have all the business you need plus more. The property service industry had their best year in 2020 during the pandemic. They grow during a recession and a pandemic, (your grass needs cutting regardless of the state of the economy). The global home services market is expected to grow 18.91% per year from 20192026. Though many providers faced hardships at the start of COVID-19, the industry has since rebounded. Source: https://www. verifiedmarketresearch.com/ product/global-home-servicemarket-size-and-forecastto-2025/ As people retreated to their homes, consumer spending followed and there was an
unexpected boom of economic activity around the home. This shift in spending to the home from activities like eating at restaurants or traveling, combined with existing strong demographic, economic, and cultural tailwinds has resulted in considerable growth in the size of the total addressable home service market. No longer are homes strictly assets we use to force us to save—they are the new center of our personal and professional lives. Home spending decisions are more and more being driven not only by pressing maintenance repairs, but now also by enjoyment, utility and lifestyle. The housing stock continues to age, with the average age of a home now over 40 years old, and continuing to age as the rate of new home construction – between 500,000 and 1,500,000 new units per year – is not enough to bring down the average age of the 141,500,000 existing housing units. Conversely, the younger millennial generation is hitting its peak homebuying age (early 30s), meaning a new influx of homeowners looking for their dream home is putting upward pressure on the demand for remodeling. Source: https://www.angi. com/research/reports/ market/#ixzz76f6A61M2 Besides the great demand that is driving the property service industry, another
reason to consider owning a franchise in this space is that it is typically a low cost of entry and can be home based initially and not tied to a real estate lease or physical building. These businesses can be easily scaled into multimillion dollar enterprises and can create a nice recurring income into the future.

Recent stats released by Morgan Stanley blew many away. According to the report, the $100 billion pet industry is poised to nearly triple to $275 billion by 2030 thanks to a surge in new owners, favorable demographics and increased per-pet spending. 65% of 18- to 34-year-olds plan to acquire or add a pet in the next five years, helping drive what's expected to be a 14% increase in pet ownership by 2030. No surprise to entrepreneur Andy Wiltz. After studying entrepreneurship in college and later becoming one in his own right, Wiltz didn’t need anyone to tell him an excellent business

when Wiltz discovered the forward-thinking Stimulus Program offered by Pet Butler for existing pet-industry business owners looking to diversify and expand their service offerings. Acquired by Spring-Green Enterprises in 2017, Pet Butler provides pet-waste removal and other pet-related services to residential and commercial clients and its innovative Stimulus Plan waives the initial fee for pet-industry business owners interested in joining Pet Butler. In today’s booming pet industry, the adjusted upfront cost could be as low as $10,000 to open a Pet Butler franchise. Qualified applicants are also eligible for a forgivable microloan to help offset start-up costs. That offering was enough to gain the attention of Wiltz. The Stimulus Plan allowed him to invest in two Pet Butler territories while also hiring a manager to run the business and accelerate Wiltz’s growth plan. “I was familiar with Pet Butler and over the course of a few years I had watched
a competing day care in the market diversify with a Pet Butler f ranchise, so I became very interested in the opportunity,” Wiltz said. As part of the Pet Butler franchise system, which now has the award winning back office and marketing support of Spring-Green Enterprises, Wiltz is able to take advantage of the franchisor’s call center, business consultants and ongoing marketing support. “We are constantly dealing with new customers and a resource between me and that customer to ensure a quick and satisfactory resolution is enormously valuable,” said Wiltz. After years in the pet business, Wiltz understands the importance of customer service. “It’s critical,” he said. “While the dogs love coming to Woof ’s Play & Stay, they do not pay the bills, parents do. And the same thinking applies to our Pet Butler operations. We appreciate any additional resources that will help ensure the satisfaction of our clients.” In addition, Wiltz is very excited about crossmarketing opportunities, “We are plugged into what is going on in the community and have lots of ways to integrate Pet Butler,” Wiltz said.
In Pet Butler, Wiltz, found a franchise brand with a modernized business model that offers large, protected territories that foster scalable growth and strong recurring revenue, which has helped make Pet Butler No. 1 in the “No. 2” business for thousands of clients across North America. Roughly 85 million U.S. families, or 67 percent of households, own a pet, according to the 20192020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). In the U.S., pets include 90 million dogs and 94 million cats. In 2018, pet services accounted for $72.56 billion spent and was estimated to grow to $75.38 billion in 2019. Knowing firsthand the challenges of starting up and running a business, Wiltz has a special appreciation for the ongoing support Pet Butler provides. “Having a business consultant who understands how to run a business and can share practical tips, lessons learned and also the ability to bounce ideas back and forth is exceptional,” Wiltz said. Top 5 Reasons Property Service Franchises Are HOT in 2021 by Jen Wherrell, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
I
f you're dreaming of going into business for yourself but struggling to find a low-cost, profitable way to do it, there has never been a better time to get into the property service industry. Property service companies help home and business owners take care of their property. Some offer full management services, while others specialize in a particular area of property maintenance, such as water remediation or tree and stump removal. Here are five reasons why home service franchises are on fire in 2021 and show no signs of slowing down. SIZZLING REAL ESTATE MARKET As anyone who has read a newspaper lately knows, the real estate marketing is sizzling, with home prices in most cities having surpassed their highs from the mid-2000s bubble. A hot real estate market creates major opportunities for property service firms. When prices are high, more homeowners put money into their properties for repairs and upgrades. They can tap into their rapidly increasing home equity to the pay the costs without worrying about going underwater. Homeowners looking to sell will often hire various property service pros to

maximize the appeal of their home to prospective buyers. Rents are also rising, leading many homeowners to put off selling their houses in favor of renting them out. Because most people are too busy to handle the dayto-day minutiae of being landlords, they hire property management firms such as Real Property Management to screen tenants, collect rent, field maintenance requests and take care of other tasks.

LOW BREAK-EVEN POINT Depending on the type of property service f ranchise you elect to buy, the startup costs can be as low as a few thousand dollars. And because this type of business typically doesn't require a fancy, spacious office — remember, most of the work will be done at other people's properties — the operating costs are also minimal. With low startup and operating costs, property
service franchises allow you to become profitable fast. It's also possible to start as a one-person shop, eschewing the need to hire and pay employees, and then add staff as your franchise grows. With a property franchise like Monster Tree Service, you can start small and then scale up at your own pace.
rear-view mirror. The pent-up demand from the pandemic has been officially unleashed, manifesting in a booming economy and record-high consumer spending. Much of that spending is happening in the arena of home services, making 2021 the perfect time for new franchise owners to claim their piece of the pie.
piece of property is something that simply cannot be handled by a robot or a piece of software. Maybe it will be possible in 100 years, but it's doubtful it will be in our lifetime. A property service franchise is ideal for a prospective business owner looking for long-term job security.
ABILITY TO WORK FROM HOME Thanks to COVID-19, the world has discovered the benefits of working from home. It has also become apparent that many jobs long performed from offices could be done just as effectively from the comfort of one's living room. If you've caught the workfrom-home bug and dread the idea of returning to an inperson workplace, a property service franchise could be perfect for you. Again, most of the physical work takes place at your customers' properties, and depending on the capital at your disposal, you can hire employees or contractors for those jobs, allowing you to oversee the entire process from your home or anywhere you choose.
NO THREATS FROM ROBOTS In today's world of breakneck technological advancement, a question everyone should ask themselves before starting a new venture is, "How likely is it that machines will take over this job in five to ten years?" With property services, the answer is that it's very unlikely. Managing and maintaining a

Prior to that he was CEO of the CertaPro Group. Throughout his 30 years with FirstService Brands he has held numerous roles, starting as a franchisee in 1982 at College Pro Painters. Believing that there was an opportunity to create a successful and significant full time painting company, in 1992 he became the founding President of CertaPro Painters. One of Chase’s gifts is Leadership. But in a much broader sense of the word than we are used to seeing. Not only does Chase oversee the many brands under the FirstService Brands umbrella, but he also coaches and problem solves along with each brand’s CEOs. “My belief ”, said Chase, “is if I have talented people running each brand then we will collectively all be successful. The networking and meetings we participate in together makes each brand better. There is a ton of sharing among us all and the main purpose is ultimately the end reward of exceptional brand experience for our customers. We share a common customer who has needs for the home; usually their biggest investment.” Chase considers this such an important topic that he, along with Dr. Paul Woolner, the founder of 4Sight Partners consulting firm and strategic
advisor to FirstService Brands, wrote an in-depth piece called for Franchising World (Dec. 2018) in which they explained the NPS (Net Promotor’s Score) that Chase has embraced, and its merits. Chase concluded, “I’m also very proud to be able to say we have a legacy of people who have gone on to do great things in franchising and we benefit from long standing relationships, be they with franchisees, vendors, or other franchisors. Charlie Chase will serve as the Chairman of the International Franchise Association in 2022 and lives in the Philadelphia area.

It Might Not Beat the Face That Launched a Thousand Ships But
IT'S THE PICTURE
That Launched Thousands of Franchises by Rhonda Sanderson, CEO, Sanderson & Associates
T
he early 80s. Those were the days. Especially in franchising. I had started in the world of PR in 1983 at a small firm in Chicago. There were only four of us, but when a potential new client popped in and said he wanted to “franchise his business”, all four of us acted like we knew what he meant. We didn’t. But our Prez was a PR genius and he set his three main PR ladies to work figuring this “franchising thing” out. 6 months later we had Subway as a client. Our main pitch to business reporters in those days was “he’s going the way of McDonald’s”. Little did we know! I eventually went out on my own and one of my very first clients would end up changing my life forever. CertaPro Painters had two energetic, good-looking guys at the helm. They had everything going for them not the least of which was humility. Ever playing down their importance in the company and in life in general, I just flipped out. Did they not know how awesome they were? PS. I didn’t use that word in my brain because no one was saying it yet. But you get the drift. Today, I look back and realize how they built an empire and how Charlie Chase was bold enough to take on ALL the brands that
eventually became FirstService Brands. Tom Wood, the quintessential gentleman, helped build CertaPro Painters to the status of Number Tom Wo One in the od, left, is seen han Chase, ri ging and ght, is se Category Charlie en stand ing. and now has done the same for Floor Coverings International. Sounds corny and cliché, but if every franchisor really cared about the success of each and every franchisee, treated them all as family, and taught them to give every customer the most amazing experience possible, well there would be few failures in the world of franchising. The mantra and hashtag of FirstService Brands is #firstserverothers. They live it every day. I know. I still am proud to be a part of their team.

Prior to that, he was a Residential Sales Associate for a CertaPro Painters® franchisee for four years. Future of the Industry and FSV: We expect residential property services demand to sustain and be very strong across all services platforms. There are several factors contributing to this including low interest rates; the growing demand of home buyers, especially in the millennial segment; baby boomers aging in place; and overall strong home values. Companies that have a dedicated focus on brand experience and the business processes to back it up are at a strategic advantage because they are consistently creating raving fans. FirstService Brands has made brand experience a core tenant of its operations. As a subsidiary of FirstService Brands, we have also woven this into our DNA as a brand. The CertaPro Painters® brand stands for delivering Certainty to each customer throughout their property services journey with us. There aren’t too many items in this world that are “certain” and in this industry, “certainty” is not the first word that comes to people’s minds. We are committed to delivering an extraordinary customer experience where what we say will happen throughout the project, is delivered on. We’re going to listen to the clients needs and leverage our painting services expertise and prepare a detailed project plan. We’re going to ask you questions upfront to ensure we are going to meet your expectations on what should and shouldn’t happen during the project. We’re going to manage every aspect of your project so you can focus on the other priorities in your life. We’ll keep you and any other individuals who are part of the project informed on the progress of the project so you know what is next. ABOUT PAUL DAVIS
Rich Wilson President & CEO Paul Davis Restoration Inc.
Rich Wilson began his career in franchising in 1986 with College Pro Painters. He was attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and needed a substantial amount of income to pay for tuition. Owning a painting business that operated in the summer seemed the best way to afford Rich the opportunity to stay in school. Fortunately, the business was successful and the tuition was paid. Upon graduation in 1988, Mr. Wilson accepted a position with the franchisor and eventually worked his way up to Vice President in 1993. He expanded his division into New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania, doubling its sales over eight years. In 1997, Mr. Wilson was recruited by AAMCO Transmissions in Philadelphia. He served in several senior positions in Franchise Sales, Operations and the Parts Department. It was during this time that Rich learned many of the skills necessary to run a full time franchise organization. hen most of us think of our nation’s veterans we immediately think of our war fighters who face bullets, death and put their life in harms way to protect our freedoms. Admiral Garcia has put his life on the line to protect our country and the world from harm of a different kind. The unseen kind. The kind we are all thinking about these days. While few of us ever thought of a pandemic, he has been thinking about these and many other health issues his entire life and has dedicated his life and career to Public Health. We sat down with Dr. Garcia to gain his perspective on service to our country, what he sees for our future and most importantly, the story of his American Dream.

Rules were to be followed and respect to elders and the law was a must. I was the first born so the rules for me were the strictest of them all. Today I truly appreciate that those were the rules. I genuinely love and respect my mother and father. They inspired and forged me to be the man I am today. We watched baseball and basketball, local and MLB and NBA. I love baseball and the New York Yankees. I also followed the New York Jets in the NFL and the Knicks in the NBA. Sadly, my son Joshua and daughter Kristen inherited the love that I had for my teams. Therefore; they are happy with the Yankees, but frustrated with the Knicks. Well, the Jets will always be the Jets. I followed politics closely since I was a child and learned a lot about them from my grandparents. We watched the news when there was a true meaning of news and there was no personal commentary from the newscaster. We stood for our flag and national anthem and we knelt for prayer and our God. Truly very simple times where you would not expect burglaries and milk came in a glass container. Times when you say thanks and apologize even if you did not make that apparent mistake. YOUR CAREER SPANS MANY DISCIPLINES. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? Since my early years I always wanted to be a physician. First; an astronaut physician, probably because the Apollo missions and landing on the Moon. Later; a military physician, probably because the MASH TV show. In college I wanted to be a surgeon and in medical school decided for gynecologic surgery. My decision in medical school was based on the beauty of laparoscopic surgery, infertility surgery and the principal goal is to help patients and help bring life to families and the world. My love for doing good allowed me to succeed as a physician and leader, before I got into state and federal government, public and global health and corporate health and now as an entrepreneur.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY AND THE WORLD? I have the honor to have served as the 14th Assistant Secretary for Health of the United States as a Four-Star Admiral in the US Public Health Service, positions confirmed by the US Senate. As the highest-ranking medical officer in the United States, I served as the primary advisor on matters involving national public health and science for the Secretary of Health. I served as United States Representative to the World Health Organization Executive Board. Previous duties include my service as Deputy Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office for the Western Hemisphere for the World Health Organization;
the Commissioner of the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health; Director of the Washington D.C. Department of Health; and served as the President and Dean of Medicine for the Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences. HOW DID YOU TRANSITION FROM THE PUBLIC SECTOR TO PRIVATE? It might sound arrogant to showcase my background and accolades, but it is a way to thank my parents and family for having provided me with love, faith, structure and the importance of hard work. I served on several boards of nationally recognized healthcare organizations, including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the National Dialogue on Cancer. From my awards and honors I cherished the most to have the Secretary of Defense Award for Exceptional Public Service, the U.S. Public Health Service Distinguished Service Award and honorary doctoral degrees from several universities. I also had the pleasure to be the CMO of American Express. Presently I lead Ambitna, an innovative platform to bring cures and treatments to market early and eliminate health disparities through increasing the opportunity, access and participation of people of all races and ethnic groups to be included in ethical research and clinical trials to the premier medical and research institutions. I am a member of Emitto, a new platform that utilizes a private and secure application on your phone to help you identify the risk of Covid-19 and other emerging and infectious diseases. As science and technology have evolved, I am also a founding member of Aegis Health Analytics (AHA), a platform to integrate science, technology and results. AHA, like Emitto and Ambita, are new and innovative science based solutions to improve the health of all our people no matter your race, ethnicity and religion.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE YOUTH OF AMERICA? If a farm boy from a small town and growing on a dairy farm made a little difference locally, nationally and globally, anyone can make it too. Sounds like a cliché, but it’s true. I would tell them to dream big. Trust in your abilities and know that our country welcomes excellence with open arms when they want to achieve. YOUR HUMILITY AND SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY IS INSPIRING. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO BE WITH US!
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO ME AND, AGAIN, TO ALL MILITARY, VETERANS AND THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED TO KEEP OUR FREEDOM AND PROTECT OUR CONSTITUTION, I WANT TO SAY THANKS AND GOD BLESS. WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE by Kali Morgenthaler, Director of Marketing, Kitchen Solvers

OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
Building a culture isn’t something that happens overnight. It is something that is cultivated through the people that experience and live it. The community culture at Kitchen Solvers wasn’t necessarily something that was born out of writing core values and a mission statement on paper and sharing it with the team. It was something that was built with the individuals who belong to the franchise, their collaboration and partnership, and the togetherness and connection they created organically. Kitchen Solvers Franchise Partners often reference Kitchen Solvers as a “family”. For better or worse, this family has a commitment and bond like no other and it would not be complete without the strong franchise partners, Home Office team, and vendors that make up the family culture. In recognition of Hispanic American Heritage Month, Kitchen Solvers highlights some of these partners that have helped create and foster this culture:
Richar Cifuentes, Owner of Kitchen
Solvers of North Miami, has over 30 years of experience in national and multinational companies in Colombia, where he focused on services and telecommunications. Richar was always looking for an opportunity to manage his own time and to provide a better quality of life for his family. When Richar was searching for the right opportunity, he discovered he was intrigued by the concept of remodeling. With Kitchen Solvers’ long history in the market and the structure of their organization, he found the concept met everything he was looking for. He said the final decision came down to meeting the Home Office team, who from the beginning showed they were very supportive in every aspect of the process. Richar states, “Having the entire Kitchen Solvers Home Office Team available has been a great experience. Having continuous and direct communication, along with always being attentive and open to teaching us and giving us all their support has been impressive.” Since joining Kitchen Solvers in August, Richar has attended training and is already generating leads and running appointments. In Richar’s eyes, the key to success is making his clients the highest priority and he is ready to provide the most pleasant remodeling experience to homeowners in North Miami! Fabian Vacca, Owner of Kitchen Solvers of Fort Lauderdale, was born in Argentina where he learned at a young age that he had a passion for building. He enjoyed accompanying his father, who was a builder, and knew by the time he was 12 that he wanted to become an architect. He started his career in telecommunications, but after 18 years he decided to follow his passion and open his own construction company in Argentina. In 2018, Fabian decided it was time to relocate his family, so in early 2019 Fabian became the Owner of Kitchen Solvers of Fort Lauderdale, and one year later he purchased his second exclusive territory, Boca Raton. In his first year with Kitchen Solvers, he won “Rookie of the Year” and just one year later, he won “Best Kitchen Reface” and “Kitchen Solvers Franchise of the Year”, which recognizes outstanding franchise partners. Fabian’s dedication to his clients is unyielding and is commonly referenced in his online reviews. As Fabian oversees all areas of project management, installation, sales and marketing, his biggest passion is working with the Home Office for strategic planning in growing his business. His growth plans now include his son, Agustin, who joined Kitchen Solvers of Fort Lauderdale earlier this year and has been learning from his father, just as Fabian learned from his. 60

Julio was born in Mexico, but after his employer asked him to move to Houston, Texas, he decided to make it his home. After having to leave his career in the steel industry, he decided it was time to do something different that had good potential, and a structured plan. Julio is exceptional at managing a good team and as his business grows, he will be sure to run a smooth operation. A Successful Combination: Franchising & Family
When Arturo Lopez’s father was diagnosed with dementia, Lopez and his family were committed to ensuring their father was happy, safe, and as comfortable as possible living in his home. With no local company specializing in senior house care and aging-in-place. The Lopez family divided responsibilities from home chores and maintenance, to caring for their father. Through this experience, Lopez saw firsthand the challenges older adults face as they age in place.
68
It was impossible to find a single company to help his father with home maintenance so he could continue to live in his home safely. While seeking out solutions for his father, Lopez discovered TruBlue Total House Care and eventually opened TruBlue of West Houston. With the support of his wife, Elena, as well as their two children – Gabriel and Alejandro, and Lopez’ sister, Linda Lopez, they are able to assist other seniors. “I was always interested in opening a business that could help seniors and veterans and, after my experience with my dad who served in the Coast Guard for 24 years, I realized there was a need for a company like TruBlue to help people care for their homes. We kept my dad at his home until the house started to
negatively impact my mom’s health, but if we had had a company like TruBlue to take care of their house, they could have stayed home longer. That is the kind of difference I want to make for the people in my own community with TruBlue,” Lopez said. “I have been extremely impressed by the wonderful TruBlue West Houston team” said Sean Fitzgerald, TruBlue brand president. “The Lopez family has maintained a heighted sense of comradery as a family but more importantly as a business, providing the necessary senior services their community so desperately needed. I look forward to seeing their continued success,” said Fitzgerald TruBlue Total House Care is a full-service home maintenance company that

Lifelong Friends Tuning-Up Kitchens Across San Antonio Lifelong friends Jaime Sanchez & Jorge Zorrilla are transforming kitchens across San Antonio as co-owners of a Kitchen Tune-Up franchise offering 1-5 day kitchen updates.
When Jaime Sanchez became a franchise consultant, he knew he wanted to focus on helping other Hispanics get into business ownership through franchising. In Kitchen TuneUp he found a model that he not only thought was a great opportunity for others, but for himself and some close friends as well. Jaime and his lifelong friend Jorge Zorrilla decided to embark on franchise ownership together. To round out their initial team

DivaDance was founded by Jami Stigliano, who went from working in the music business, contributing to the careers of artists like Britney, Pink, and Justin, to using pop music to reinvent the dance class experience after her own tear-inducing experience at a beginner hip hop class in New York City’s Broadway Dance Center. “Most dance studios offer classes and curriculum designed to hone your craft and help dancers advance their career pursuits on Broadway or dancing backup for pop stars. But, what about regular people who just want to learn choreo without the added pressure of auditions, casting calls, and headshots?” DivaDance was designed with the client experience at the forefront and values as the driver. “We just want people to have a place where they can do more of what they love,” said Stigliano. And it turns out that doing more of what you love has BIG benefits! "I have hundreds of examples of women who not only lost weight because they’ve been more active, but their shoulders are up, they make brighter eye contact, they smile bigger,” Jami says. “We feel that if you’re confident, you’re a better mother, wife, sister, coworker – what we do for people is so much bigger than just dance classes."

WHAT IS IT? A very small, drive-thru only neighborhood market that serves • Groceries for home • Simple snacks & meals throughout the day • Take-home meals • Coffee & Breakfast in the mornings Some people call us a convenience store, but we’re the most convenient store. The Best Opportunity You’ve Never Thought Of... We get it. In fact, we have some fun with it.
W
e know that nobody grows up thinking that they want to sell custom window treatments for a living! That’s exactly why we call ourselves ‘the best opportunity you’ve never thought of’. For the 99.99% of people that have never considered the custom window treatment industry as a profession, here is an experiment that will help you understand the market potential of custom window treatments: The next time you leave your house, take a look at all the windows you see- on homes, retail stores, restaurants, office buildings, condos, churches, and virtually every other building. All of those windows need some type of window treatment, and that represents the opportunity at Gotcha Covered! Not only do all of those windows need some sort of window treatments, but each one of them is an opportunity to integrate our products into the exploding demand and adoption of Smart Home technology. Our franchise owners (100+ locations across the US and Canada)
98
provide custom window treatments to residential and commercial clients through a very consultative, informative process that has earned Gotcha Covered an astonishing reputation with our clients. OUR REPUTATION One thing that separates Gotcha Covered from practically every other service company in any industry is our online reputation as expressed by our clients on Google, Facebook, and other review sites. Across all time and locations, our average review score is an extraordinary 4.9 out of 5.0!
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
As you can imagine, it is hard enough for any business- even those with just one location- to earn a 4.9 star reputation. To do it over so many years and across so many locations and thousands of reviews is something that we have not heard in any other business! (By the way, if there is another company out there with a similar reputation, we’d love to hear about them.) So, how did Gotcha Covered achieve such an amazing reputation?!? Well, we attribute this reputation first and foremost to the caliber of our franchise owners. We are very selective
in awarding franchises to people that have a strong work ethic, a desire to succeed, an ability to follow a plan, and an interest and ability in creating relationships. Notice that your particular
background is not important, as our franchise owners come from all walks of life- teachers, homemakers, software engineers, sales professionals, accountants, managers, entrepreneurs, retail, HR,
food services, journalism, real estate, health care, and many more, including military veterans like Cliff Oberg. Cliff has a story about success and perseverance that’s worth telling.
CLIFF’S STORY Originally from a small town in Montana, Cliff joined the Air Force as a young man to see the world. Cliff spent 20 years in the Air Force before deciding to retire to civilian life. As he was preparing to leave the service, he explored his options for employment and business ownership, and ultimately decided that Gotcha Covered was a good fit for him (and we agreed!). Living in a warm climate had always been part of Cliff’s dream, so when he left the service he decided to start his business in Tampa, Florida. He had never lived there, and didn’t know anybody who did. No contacts whatsoever. Cliff went through the Initial Training class like everyone else does, and started building his new business according to the Gotcha Covered recipe. Because he did not know anything about his territory, it took him some time simply to learn the lay of the land and figure out where the neighborhoods were, what businesses he could partner with, what marketing opportunities he had, and so on. Because Cliff started from proverbial scratch, it took him longer than most to start getting traction and have appointments and make sales. He had good days and bad daysas all new business owners inevitably do. He leaned on the Gotcha Covered staff, stuck to the plan, and maintained a high level of activity. Eventually, Cliff’s efforts started to pay off. Big time. Just after completing his first full year in business, Cliff set a record within Gotcha Covered of being the owner to open up a retail show room in the shortest amount
of time. (Our franchise owners have complete flexibility as to the structure of their businesshome-based, show room, employees or notit’s all up to them!) Later that year, Cliff found himself on stage at our annual Conference, being recognized as one of our Top Ten performing franchise owners. As impressive as Cliff’s story is, the most impressive point is about what happened after Cliff spent many years as a Top Ten performer. You see, eventually Cliff grew tired of the warm climate and longed to move back to his home town. Soon after putting his business up for sale, a fellow Gotcha Covered owner who lived about 30 miles away decided to buy Cliff’s business, leaving Cliff a nice nest egg to move back to Montana and semi-retire. But Cliff didn’t retire. He could have gotten a job. But Cliff didn’t get a job. He could have opened a fly fishing business. But Cliff didn’t open up a fly fishing business. Nope, Cliff could have done literally anything else upon moving back home, but what he decided to do was to start another Gotcha Covered business! Cliff’s story says so much about how anyone with a desire to succeed, a strong work ethic and strong interpersonal skills can be successful within Gotcha Covered. It say so much about the ability to build a business that has value when it’s time to move on. The fact that his Gotcha Covered neighbor bought his business says so much about the desirability of a Gotcha Covered franchise. And the fact that Cliff decided to open another Gotcha Covered business speaks for itself.

TRAINING AND SUPPORT But of course, we did not achieve our incredible reputation simply be bringing good people like Cliff into our system. Over many years, we have developed a world-class training and support infrastructure that is relentlessly franchisee-centric. This means that everything we do from a training and support perspective is driven by a focus on helping our franchise owners be successful. Our training starts with a full week of in-person or virtual training around a variety of topics, including measuring, technology, operations, marketing and sales. This week of training has been continually fine-tuned and honed over years, and gives our owners the very best foundation for success. We also have a full second week of in-home training where our franchise owners focus on product knowledge directly from our vendor partners. After the first two weeks of formal training, our owners focus on getting their infrastructure set up, building their marketing strategy, and generally getting everything in place to launch their business. Gotcha Covered staff provide a lot of support and hand-holding during this very exciting and busy phase. Once all the pieces are in place, it’s time to go!
100 OCTOBER 2021
After the business is launched, our owners start having appointments and making sales, learning more about products and the business along the way. Within the next couple of months, and with some experience and context, our owners are back for our Advanced Training class.
GOTCHA COVERED WAS ACTUALLY FOUNDED AS A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY THAT DEVELOPED A UNIQUE SOFTWARE PROGRAM FOR OUR INDUSTRY. This week includes a lot of dialogue with other new owners, along with subject matter experts presenting advanced topics. At the conclusion of Advanced Training, our owners have been accelerated through the learning curve and are able to turbocharge their businesses. While our incredible reputation has mostly to do with our owners and
| WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
our training and support resources, there are other aspects of the Gotcha Covered system that contribute. After all, you simply can’t achieve excellence without ‘hitting on all cylinders’, as they say. THE POINT OF TECHNOLOGY Technology for technology’s sake is pointless. Unless technology improves or enhances the results for the user, there is literally no point in it. That’s why Gotcha Covered invests heavily in performance-based technology that focuses on helping our owners do more with less, and ultimately put more dollars in their pockets. Gotcha Covered was actually founded as a technology company that developed a unique software program for our industry. Technology is still part of our DNA, and we have spent many years and many dollars creating a comprehensive web-based operational software, called Gotcha Linked, that is unlike any other software program in our industry. Gotcha Linked is a full frontend lead management, marketing automation platform that helps our franchise owners manage prospects, calendars, pricing and proposals, tasks, projects and a whole lot more. Gotcha Linked provides advanced Business Intelligence and an integration with QuickBooks
GOTCHA COVERED HAS SEVERAL AUTOMATED MARKETING PROGRAMS THAT ALLOW OUR FRANCHISE OWNERS TO FOCUS ON LOCAL ENGAGEMENT AND LEAD GENERATION. among other third-party software programs. At the end of the day, Gotcha Linked provides our franchise owners efficiencies and tools that help them run all aspects of their business with a strong client focus. GROWING THE BRAND Another important aspect of our online reputation is a robust and comprehensive data-driven marketing platform. Our multi-channel marketing strategies and tactics are based on sophisticated data, and includes proven offline and online marketing tools and resources. In particular, Gotcha Covered has several automated marketing programs that allow our franchise owners to focus on local engagement and lead generation. This collaborative marketing approach helps our owners find our best customers, build trust and credibility, and ultimately build ongoing revenue streams. A CRYSTAL BALL So, what does the future of the custom window treatment industry look like? The window treatment industry, generally speaking, is quite fragmented with little branding, and behind in technology. It is one of the few remaining industries that have not yet undergone
significant consolidation. As technology becomes a more critical aspect of our industry, and as marketing become increasingly complex, the smaller, independent ‘mom and pop’ window treatment retailers will find it harder and harder to compete against a powerhouse like Gotcha Covered. They simply don’t have the resources, the efficiencies, or the technological competence to keep up. Gotcha Covered is in a perfect position to capitalize on the evolution of our industry. Our technology, our marketing savvy, and our amazing reputation are the perfect building
blocks to ultimately become a dominant player in our industry. Having achieved the milestone of 100 locations in 2019, we are building momentum, accelerating our growth responsibly, and are well on our way to becoming a household name. Qualified people who are ready to associate with a high-quality brand, find an optimal work/life balance, and create the income and equity that they desire should take a serious look at Gotcha Covered. We can’t guarantee that we will be a good fit for each other, but why not take a closer look at the best opportunity you’ve never thought of?

Renovation Sells Combines
the Two Emerging Industries of Renovation and Real Estate to Create a Uniquely Positioned Franchise Opportunity by Luca Piacentini, Senior Writer, 1851 Franchise
As Baby Boomer home sellers look for cost-effective updates to make their listings appeal to the needs of incoming Millennial homebuyers, Renovation Sells saw a 20% increase in year-over-year sales.
R
enovation Sells, the Chicago-based renovation franchise that makes pre-sale renovations to bring homes ready for market, saw a 20% increase in year-over-year sales in 2020. This growth is largely because, over the past year, the pandemic created historically low mortgage rates and the ability to work from home, at the same time that the real estate industry saw Millennial homebuyers flooding the market. Even prior to the pandemic, Millennials — America’s largest generation — were starting to reach home buying age. Now, these factors have resulted in the highest home sales since 2006, with no signs of slowing down. While this is great news for sellers, there is just one problem: many of the homes for sale don’t appeal to those younger buyers.
108
Luckily, Renovation Sells offers the perfect solution. “With Millennials turning homebuyer age, we have a new generation of buyers who aren’t attracted to the larger, older homes the baby boomers are now trying to offload,” founder Michael Valente said. “They want stylish, move-in-ready homes, and that demand will continue to increase for decades to come. That means a real estate agent with a stock of relatively drab or boring homes stands to make a killing with some key upgrades, and that’s where we come in.” Renovation Sells’s business model is built for efficiency and client satisfaction in an industry notorious for lengthy, over-budget projects and overall frustration. Where most rehab companies take on custom projects with fickle homeowners
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
looking to upgrade their houses for their own families, Renovation Sells instead focuses exclusively on presale renovations, delivering high-impact cosmetic improvements executed to maximize speed and minimize costs. Working with real estate agents (and their clients) to offer a turn-key solution — including design, project management and financing — to easily and quickly make their listings in line with the needs of Millennial buyers. WIth 99% of buyers viewing listings on their phones, Valente says Renovation Sells’s goal is to make every property standout online. This is done through stylish design while keeping in mind the new industry norm of virtual tours and the importance of social media and high-quality photography. With this winning model, Renovation Sells has carved out a niche that combines both the renovation and real estate industry and has seen explosive growth as a result. After rehabbing more than
200 Chicago-area homes with an average project time of only three weeks, Renovation Sells began franchising in 2020 as a way to bring this muchneeded service to markets throughout the country. This year, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Renovation Sells brand proved to not only be recession-proof, but also more in-demand than ever, with the company seeing a 20% increase in year-overyear sales. Now, prospective Renovation Sells franchisees have the lucrative opportunity to fill this widening gap in the real estate/renovation market by leveraging the brand’s in-house design expertise, streamlined business model, exceptional support
infrastructure and thriving network of real estate agents. Renovation Sells provides every resource a franchisee will need to grow in a new market. This includes help with marketing, project management technology and every other facet of the business. “Every home in America built over five years ago needs presale renovations before listing in order to appeal to today's buyer, and Renovation Sells offers a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs to tap into that demand,” said Valente. “For prospects looking to invest in a proven franchise brand and enter a thriving segment, the time has never been better to join the Renovation Sells family.”
Investments for franchise opportunities in the home renovation space can soar well over $200,000. The initial investment to franchise with Renovation Sells ranges from $78,208 to $101,142, including a $50,000 franchise fee making it much lower than most competitors. Solving a Growing Issue in the Waste Industry by Camantha Magoon, Communications & Content Specialist, FranDevCo Americans produce an average of 4.5 pounds of waste per day (a total of 40% of waste globally) making the U.S. the #1 trash-producing nation in the world despite only having 5% of the world’s population. Needless to say, there has never been a greater demand for waste industry services to combat this evergrowing issue. Unfortunately, the waste and recycling industries have experienced a growing labor shortage over the past several years creating employee and truck shortages all over the country. Sources even say that by 2026, the solid waste industry will have 14,200 new jobs for drivers and riders, and a tightening labor market with more job openings than potential qualified employees will only exacerbate the
116
situation as demand for the positions grow. However, Crushr is helping to solve the problem by offering the industry a way to manage the waste stream! COMBATING THE ISSUE Crushr has been compacting trash in open top dumpsters since 2016 under the expertise of Founder, CEO and President, Scott Dennison. With 1M+ tons compacted and counting, their original patented technology and compact truck make them unique in the waste space and a natural leader
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
in trash compaction. Their franchise concept is simple. They are a technology driven waste management company that compacts trash in roll-off dumpsters. When consumers are averaging less than 5-6 tons per haul in their roll off bin, they are basically paying to haul away air. However, Crushr can increase the capacity of containers by up to 80% by pushing the air out of the waste and maximizing the haul weight, in turn giving their customers more space and allowing them to get the
best bang for their buck. This system reduces hauls, saves their customers money, and allows haulers to better manage their routes and make more efficient runs to and from landfills. In a nutshell, their concept assists haulers and could be a major key in solving the shortage issue within the industry. A recent situation in Atlanta, Georgia only proves this. A Facilities Managerat a local University reached out to Crushr to inquire about service after their hauling company was backed up and unable to service their dumpsters in a timely manner. The brand was able to help both the University and the hauler by crushing 15 roll off containers, all in need of servicing on a rotatingbasis. This was just one situation in one location, but imagine how much Crushr could help the growing demand for labor in the industry! With Crushr, Franchise Owners have the opportunity to become part of the solution and make a difference in the waste management industry. THE INDUSTRY The $330 million trash compaction industry is currently on the rise. It is estimated to grow 3.5% from 2018-2023, reaching $400 million and not stopping due

A
s the U.S. economy continues to recover from the damage caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, what are we learning about handyman services franchises and the remodeling market? This is a question the Kitchen Solvers Franchise has asked themselves in order to stay transparent with their prospects and ahead of the curve. INDUSTRY CONDITIONS & PROJECTIONS Generally speaking, fewer markets have offered such remarkable growth over the past decade as the home
120
remodeling and renovation market, and Kitchen Solvers has seen this growth first hand. More recently, the current home remodeling industry has seen a large increase with a consistent demand for handyman and remodeling services. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) found that 83% of the homeowners who purchased a home within the past year undertook a home improvement project within the first year, which is a significant rise from the last time HIRI conducted the same survey, in 2018. Not only that, but home-improvement
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
spending is also expected to grow by a healthy 10% this year, following gains of nearly 14% in 2020. It’s true, even during the pandemic the industry had considerable growth. In March 2020, home refinance applications surged by 79% and were 479% higher than the year prior. This spike in home refinances is predicted to yield further growth for the already-booming remodeling industry as homeowners seek new ways to enhance their existing homes. According to The Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, “The unexpected strength of the home remodeling market made 2020 the tenth consecutive year of expansion for the improvement industry,” only further showing the industry’s recession resilience! The current industry numbers are also pretty high. The kitchen and bath industry is valued at $158.6 Billion, with remodeling coming in at $352 Billion clearly showing the demand for the home improvement sector remains robust. Kitchen Solvers has also
done their own research on their industry, and they keep their Franchise Owners informed. According to their home office team, “the number of professionally done remodeling projects worth $1,000 or more completed in 2020 was 14.4 million, which represents a 9.9% increase on 2019’s number. For 2021, the same metric is expected to rise to 15.5 million. And this growth is not geographically limited; 381 metropolitan statistical areas are forecasted to see growth in annual project volume in 2021, at a predicted average growth of 6.3%.” Those numbers are strong, revealing the remodeling market is experiencing both long-term stable growth and record-
setting short-term growth. It’s the best of both worlds! Advantages The entire market is growing, so why does it matter what kind of remodels your home service franchise does? According to Kitchen Solvers, it matters because customers are far more likely to want certain rooms remodeled over others. So if an Owner buys a Home Service Franchise that is specifically known for their work in kitchens and bathrooms, they’ll have more opportunities for success! With Kitchen Solvers, Franchise Owners are already ahead of the competition. They get in on a concept that has 5 incredible advantages: 1. Affordable Start-Up 2. Cash-Based Business 3. Preferred Vendor Discounts 4. Customized 3-5 Year Business Plan 5. Lead Generation Action Plan (LGAP)
Between these advantages, the extensive support of the home office team, and the industry outlook, Kitchen Solvers franchise partners achieve nothing but success from the time they sign the franchise agreement, to solidifying their first client! From there, all that’s left is an incredible opportunity to build their legacy! INTERESTED IN FRANCHISING WITH KITCHEN SOLVERS? axes, investment strategies, daily living costs, healthcare — you’ve gone over all the possibilities with your accountant so that you’re sure that you’ll be comfortable once you retire. But unless you have a CPA that’s got a big-picture view of all the potentialities that come with aging, you may not be as prepared as you thought. When catastrophes hit, you’re usually prepared with

the appropriate amount of insurance. But it’s those slow-moving, subtle changes that seniors experience that often catch you unaware and unprepared. While you and your spouse may be healthy as ever when you retire, the longer you live, the greater your risk of needing protracted, long-term care. IS LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE BENEFICIAL? cially responsible — if you end up using it. Generally, estimates put the number at 70 percent of Americans who will need some form of longterm care after the age of 65, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. While planning for the inevitability is prudent, your certified public accountant who knows your personal financial situation can help you decide if a long-term care policy is right for your specific situation.
The benefits of long-term care insurance include: • Freedom from worry about savings and investments being drained when you need to move into a facility or hire someone to come into your home • Protection of your assets for your estate and beneficiaries • A safety net left for a spouse still living at home • Coverage for in-home, assisted living facility or adult day care center included with most policies • Benefits not provided by Medicare or private health insurance • A wide range of policy options For many people, including those retirees who’ve planned well for retirement, the disadvantages of buying long-term care insurance outweigh the benefits due to: • The high cost of insurance, particularly if you wait until after you turn 55, as healthy adults under the age of 55 can expect to pay between $2,000 and $3,000 a year for a policy that pays about $164,000 a year • Rates are continually subject to change at any time • Most policies offer use-it-orlose-it coverage • Close to 40 percent of those over 65 who apply for long-term care coverage are denied • Coverage often is denied if you have a pre-existing condition or disability • Caps on daily and annual payments
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO GET LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE? Just as with all your investments and insurance needs, your best recommendations come from your tax and investment advisor who knows your financial situation and your long-term goals and needs. One strategy that works well for many retirees is a hybrid life/long-term care policy. These policies:
Return extra premiums when extra coverage isn’t used • Allow beneficiaries to get unused premiums tax-fre

Advantages of Investing in a Painting Franchise by Greg Mohr, Consultant, The Franshise Consulting Company
DEMAND One of the biggest reasons why starting a painting business is a good idea is because there is a huge market for painting. This service is always in demand for homeowners and businesses around the country. So, it can provide a steady source of income and the opportunity to be your own boss. For those new entrepreneurs who don't want to start from scratch, purchasing a painting franchise may be the way to go There’s a strong housing demand in virtually every region of the country.
128
With a renewed interest in maintaining living spaces, home improvements sales are projected to top $510 billion by mid-decade. That means the demand for services from a painting franchise goes up as more houses are built. Not only is the market large though, but it’s also a recurring market. This means that even though you’ve painted a house or an office this year, in a few years they will likely need to be repainted hence the client will give you a call. The size of the market is constantly growing as well. Think about how many new homes and businesses have
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
opened in your area over the past few years. All of those structures needed to hire a painting company because painting is often a need, not a luxury. TYPES OF PAINTING There are so many types of painting jobs out there for the taking. You can choose to specialize in residential interior or exterior painting for homeowners, new construction painting, or residential painting for builders. There are also commercial painting jobs for offices, apartment buildings, industrial facilities, and more. The options are endless with the size of the market!
WHY A FRANCHISE When you invest in one of the best painting franchises, you tap into a well-established brand with systems and strategies in place to help you grow from day one. A painting franchise gives you an advantage to learn from an entire team of like-minded gogetters who want to expand the brand and build their own businesses. That’s not something you can find when you try to start a business on your own. Instead of learning everything from scratch, franchise ownership gives you the keys to a complete set of resources to launch your business. Your role as a franchise owner is to run the business. That means hands-on management of sales, marketing and operations – not prep, prime and paint. It also means knowing how to hire the right people to provide service that goes beyond customer expectations. If you’re interested in starting a painting franchise, you’re in luck. Understanding the painting business is relatively simple and easy for someone with limited
painting experience to pick up. You don’t need to have a background in painting to wrap your head around how the painting business works and get started. This makes it relatively easy to start a painting franchise with no experience. COMPETITION You may think your community has a crowded field of painters who pop up in a local search. Take a closer look, and you’ll probably realize few of those listings are for professional painting contractors who know how to deliver the right customer experience. That makes for a fragmented painting industry. No contractor service holds more than five percent of the market. That means plenty of opportunity for you to transform the industry in your area as a painting franchise owner. While competition in the painting industry certainly exists, the companies you’re competing with are majorly lacking. If you look for painting companies in your area, you’ll likely find hundreds of them. But just because there are a lot of them, doesn’t mean you
WHEN YOU INVEST IN ONE OF THE BEST PAINTING FRANCHISES, YOU TAP INTO A WELL-ESTABLISHED BRAND WITH SYSTEMS AND STRATEGIES IN PLACE TO HELP YOU GROW FROM DAY ONE.
have tough competition. Most of these painting companies are not businesssavvy. If you read their reviews (if they even have reviews!), you’ll find that they aren’t good at communicating with their clients, they’re always running fashionably late, and they provide subpar paint jobs, or don’t reply back to their clients. On the business side of things, they often don’t understand how to run a business, lacking a streamlined sales process, and ignoring important marketing channels. While there might be a lot of competitors out there in your city or state, most of them aren’t real competition. It’s easy to say you’re a painter, but it’s a lot harder to prove that you’re a professional painter. If you’re able to get your name out there as a reputable painting company in your area, you’ll be able to turn a decent profit quickly and stand out from the competition. There may also be resale painting franchises in your area. Up and running and ready to take over. Contact me for available locations in your area.

1. Owner-Operator: This Franchise Owner wears all hats within the business. This model is a one person operation that could benefit from an additional hire, but isn’t necessary. With the Owner-Operator model, there is a faster path to profitability than other models. The recommended skill sets include some working experience in construction, but it is not required as PatchMaster is able to train on the technical aspects of the business. Franchisees will need to have the physical means to perform the work.
THE PATCHMASTER MISSION IS TO PROVIDE THE BEST FOUNDATION DURING LAUNCH, CONTINUED OPERATIONAL SUPPORT, AND TOOLS AND RESOURCES CREATED FOR GROWTH. 2. Executive Model: In this Ownership Model, the Franchisee will need to hire a manager to oversee the operations and be involved in the business the first 2-3 months in order to hire a manager and set the business up for success. The manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the business including, staffing, marketing, estimates, scheduling, networking, customer service, and satisfaction.
The Franchisee will "manage the manager," in overseeing the business from a financial standpoint to ensure optimal performance. 3. Investor: Franchise Owners in this model would form an LLC and have majority ownership while someone else (business partner or manager) has a smaller ownership with a buyout agreement taking place at a predetermined point in the future. The
business partner in this model would earn sweat equity along the way. As an investor, the Franchisee would have less day-to-day interaction with the handson part of the business. Why You Should Consider A Property Service Franchise by Greg Tuthill, Consultant, The Franchise Consulting Company
A
nyone seriously thinking about starting their own business may have considered starting their own, or opting for a property service franchise. In the franchise industry, a property service franchise business is one of the most lucrative and easy to set up business concepts. Property service franchises refer to a broad category of business franchises that offer residential and/or commercial properties with valuable and necessary services, such as home inspection, property management, cleaning,
150
heating & air, plumbing, painting, remodelingkitchen/bath, flooring, blinds, landscaping, mosquito/pest control, appliance repair, handyman services, and restorations services, among others. However, not all service franchises are created equal. The home services industry provides more unique and exciting earning opportunities for new and veteran business owners often offering substantial discounts off the franchise fees. With increasing demand and robust growth in the industry, there are many reasons to consider a property
OCTOBER 2021 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
service-based business, rather than starting your own from scratch. A good property service f ranchise can help you avoid making expensive mistakes or wasting your time trying to reinvent an existing business model that you can call your own. Even at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, property service franchises were able to persevere. With people at home more than ever, many homeowners are looking to upgrade or repair those nagging things they haven’t
gotten around to, whether it’s kitchen or bathroom renovation or plumbing repairs, heating and air conditioning upgrade or installation, and other residential and commercial services. As more and more people are spending more time at home, the result is an increase in home improvement projects that is a boom for a property service franchise business. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN OWNING A HOME/ PROPERTY SERVICE FRANCHISE First and foremost, getting into a property service franchise means lower initial investment and much lower overhead costs compared to other business models. Property service franchise businesses offer the lowest barrier for an entry-level franchisee. Because property service franchises usually work on-site, you do not need to invest in a brick-andmortar office, keeping your fixed costs to a minimum. This could save you money right from the beginning. Apart from operational expenses, property service franchises usually do not require hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of state-of-the-art equipment that you need to purchase upfront. With plenty of industries, business concepts, investment prerequisites, and benefits to consider when deciding, it is crucial to know what matters most, your ROI. Think about it. Property service franchises can generally offer low startup costs and usually need less staff for your daily operations
and many you can start on your own without any staff at all. You can add staff as you build and grow your business. In addition, many property service franchises are deemed essential and are largely recession resilient. Property service businesses are needed at all times, in any type of economy, and thus, are quite impervious to economic downturns, even during the recent pandemic that significantly impacted the global economy.
With franchising, you are in business for yourself not by yourself. There are a lot of great reasons to take a look at these great concepts. If you’ve been testing the waters on owning a franchise and aren’t sure where to start, this may be it! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Greg Tuthill has over 25 years of experience in multiple facets of business including business start-up and development.
