Canada Day — The Free Press

Celebrate Canada Day with the City of Fernie On behalf of the City of Fernie, I would like to invite everyone to celebrate Canada Day with us on July 1st at the Fernie Aquatic Centre grounds. Staff have programmed a fun-filled day with activities for all ages to enjoy. The event will begin at noon and run until 9:00 p.m. At 1:00 p.m., we will kick-off the great line-up of live music by joining together to sing ‘O Canada.’ Music will continue on stage for the remainder of the event. This year, we are excited to be showcasing amazing local talent, so bring a blanket, set up on the grass and enjoy some great tunes.

We hope you will bring the whole family out to enjoy this fun-filled day! The splash park will be open all day to keep the kids cool, there will be a free swim from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., and we will have a children’s corner with crafts and games for the little ones to enjoy. You can peruse the stalls of local makers and growers at the Mountain Market, grab a meal or snack from one of the many food trucks, or enjoy a cold beverage from Fernie Brewing Company.

The City of Fernie is proud to organize this annual event, but we could not do it without community support. We would like to thank the many businesses, organizations and individuals that contribute to making our Canada Day celebration such a success each year. Thank you, and Happy Canada Day! Mayor Ange Qualizza

Music is one of the greatest markers of memories that we have. Hearing a song can take you back to a different time, an exact moment, a room filled with people all singing the words collectively and creating that music moment in time. Of course this means that music has the infinite potential to create new memories, new markers and every winter season the music players flow in from all parts of the world with their powder dreams… to Fernie, completely unaware of the music memories they are about to make for us all. As the owner & operator of Infinitea T-Bar I have the constant pleasure to watch the connections and collaborations of these music makers happen and evolve into the bands of the season. Infinitea hosts Live Music Friday’s every week from 8:00 p.m.-midnight where we give established and starting out musicians the stage to do what they love. While there is a host that facilitates the evening, there is always a strong focus on ‘jamming’ and just getting up there and having a go and this is where so many of the new bands start. At least three of the bands performing on the Canada Day stage were born out of this jamming culture that is currently and historically so supported in Fernie. Tim & Sage of Shred Kelly in fact met at a Jam night in Fernie and Adam Laurin who is front man to now two ionic Fernie bands, The Runs & The CCR Experience, talks fondly of the way bands are formed in Fernie, “CCR band started from Dylan and I just playing music together and talking forever about starting a band… we lined up a show without ever having practised then panic practised for two weeks and put it together”. It remains to be seen each year, as these bands are formed from the travellers drawn to our little town, whether they will become part of the music landscape long term, or whether they will just be one of those moments that we all remember years later when that song plays. Either way we are extremely lucky to live in a place with such a vibrant and unique music culture and to simply be a part of the audience as the music is made. THE MUSIC THAT Fernie Makes

Awthentrix

Awthentrix, is an improv band that creates shows on the spot! Yes, they will come up with weird and wonderful, mostly on the spot topics, which along with crowd participation will build the entirely unique show for that day. The band members are also constantly changing in line with the nature of life and the spontaneous style of the music. Awthentrix is truly a unique approach to music collaboration and creation and the energy they bring is nothing short of contagious. What will they create for Canada Day?… One thing is for sure; you will only see this show once!! Photo by Gabriela Escobar Ari

Members of AAAJR

AAAJR was formed in the winter of 2018/19 and brought their raw, rocky interpretation of popular covers to the sticky bar floors of Fernie. With one of Fernie’s most charismatic front men and the added dimension of the trombone these boys play versions of songs that you would swear were their own. Canada Day will be their first venture out into the fresh air of the outdoor stage and they can’t wait to bring the music outside and get those toes tapping on the grass!

Maddisun

Maddisun is a Kootenay singer/songwriter with dreamy soulful vocals and expressive lyrics. Writing feel-good, Indie-rock music from the heart, she easily connects with her fans and audience and leaves them with a feeling of comfort and acceptance. Maddi has been getting involved in the Fernie Jam scene for the last year as she further expands her musical connections and collaborations

Naena Robinson

A long term Fernie resident, Naena came from a musical family and started learning the guitar at age 14. By day Naena is a fulltime mom of three and a worship leader at Mountainside Community Church. In the last couple of years she has started playing at local restaurants and private events around Fernie. Neana has a voice that is able to express the emotion and sentiment of the songs she sings with a truly special artistry and grace. While her current set is filled with mostly acoustic folk covers spanning a variety of genres, she hopes to write some of her own music one day soon.

Steamboat Vacation

Steamboat Vacation materialised as a band in the heart of Fernie’s own music scene. After playing together for the first time at a local jam night, these three young men found themselves eager to formulate and perform the jovial set-lists they are now known to deliver around town. Drummer, Lars Horstmann, hails from Waltrop, Germany, bassist Jamie Clarke comes from Leicester, UK and guitarist and singer, Hot Chilli comes from nowhere in particular and identifies himself as a snack enthusiast. “I want people to feel the rhythm in their bones, and experience emotions that only music can render”, Hot Chilli says while vigorously pulling another sour gummy out of his fanny-pack. The band’s premiere aim is to have the best time possible and spread the contagious joy of friendship and imagination to all that hear their music.

The Relief Committee

Musically cemented for 30 years, Tim Ketchum on rhythm guitar and Cam Kennedy on lead guitar, blend sweet vocal harmonies and form the foundation of this group. The footings are formed by PJ Burnett on bass and SyncoPat Cannon on box drum. It’s a rock-on, cruisy, bluesy sound, with jazz changes thrown into the mix. The group shares a passion for the Fernie community, the mountains, and the power of powder. Fun is high on the list for this group so come and join in!

The Hip Flexers

The Hip Flexers are Fernie’s premier special events band. Complete with multi-instrumental tracks, they play many styles of music from 70s to current pop, funk and RnB with their main aim being to get people on the dance floor and keep them there. This high energy band is stoked to be playing the main stage for this year’s Canada Day festivities once again. Members Daniel “Homer” Holmes, Barbara Bassett, Matt Lewis, Sadie Rosgen, Rachel and Riccy Behan are all wishing you and yours a safe and happy Canada Day 2019!
