Gorgeous trends in green home design

(MS) — An eco-friendly home offers many benefits. Besides reducing your carbon footprint and being better for the environment, you can save lots of money on your energy bills in the long run. Here are some to consider for your next home or remodel: Bamboo materials: Bamboo is a renewable resource that can be harvested gently, without disturbing the surrounding environment. It’s also a great alternative to hardwood, since it can regenerate faster than trees. The timeless material is very popular for flooring and can also be used for bathroom and kitchen cabinets. Look for a high-quality, sustainable producer since cheaper versions can be less sturdy. Passive house: Go beyond efficient appliances with an entire house that uses little-to-no energy. Derived from the German Passivhaus, passive house is a movement that refers to a design process that creates buildings that have a small ecological footprint and require little heating or cooling. Use the philosophy

5

to guide decisions for your home — from adding solar panels on your roof to boosting your insulation. Reclaimed pieces: One of the quickest and easiest ways to have a positive environmental impact is buying as little new as possible. The next time you need a piece of furniture, create something rustic by recycling or upcycling an old or vintage item with a new coat of paint or a fresh wood stain. If you’re planning a demolition, try deconstruction instead — “un-build” the structure and find elements you can salvage or reclaim, like exposed brick and wood beams. Water conservation: With more parts of the world experiencing drought, saving water is one of the top concerns for environmentalists. Wasting water is also expensive and leads to higher utility bills. Upgrading your home with water conservation features can go a long way, and most are designed to look sleek and minimalist. Opt for low-flow showerheads, toilets and sink fixtures.

3 reasons to hire a professional landscaper Do you want to turn your yard into a personal oasis? How about boost the curb appeal and market value of your home? Landscaping can do all this, but unless you have ample time, stamina and expertise, it’s probably best to hire a professional landscaper to do the job. Here’s what you can expect. 1. Great ideas A beautifully designed yard begins with a well thought out plan. Landscapers, also called landscape designers, can help you create a great design from scratch or embellish on ideas you already have. They’ll evaluate your property and use their in-depth knowledge of terrain and design principles to make recommendations specific to your yard. They’ll work with you to form a plan that suits your vision and budget. 2. Horticultural expertise Landscapers are deeply versed in horticulture. They have extensive knowledge of plant life and understand how terrain and climate impact vegetation. You can therefore count on them to know which plants, flowers, trees and shrubs will thrive in your yard and what each one will require in terms of soil, sunlight, water and general care. 3. Superior execution An experienced landscaper will have successfully completed a large number of projects and you can be confident that they’ll achieve good results with your yard too. They’ll bring industry expertise to the job and know where to find the best talent and resources. Plus, they’re familiar with the different problems that can occur and the pitfalls that should be avoided. If you’d like to hire a landscaper, look for one who’s experienced, certified and has liability insurance. Get ready to love your yard like never before!

3 things to consider before building an addition Do you love your home but wish you had a little more living space? If you’re thinking about building an addition, here are some things to consider before you break ground. 1. What you’re allowed. Most municipalities require you to obtain a permit if you intend to build an addition. Also, you may need to abide by their regulations concerning how large the new part of your home can be and how far from the edge of your property it can reach. 2. Your budget. Building an addition is pricey, but it may cost less than moving altogether. When making your budget, be sure to leave a little wiggle room for extra expenses that may come up. 3. The team you’ll hire. Building an addition isn’t something most people can do themselves. You’ll need to hire an architect as well as various contractors (or a general manager who’ll be responsible for overseeing the whole project). One final thing: building an addition is a huge project that will undoubtedly overtake your home. If possible, it may be a good idea to move out while it’s under construction.

The advantages of gardening with raised beds Do you want a garden but have poor soil? Then gardening with raised beds is likely the best solution. Raised beds are garden plots raised several inches or more off the ground and enclosed on all sides by a frame made of wood or rock. You simply fill your box with rich soil then start planting the desired fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers and plants. Raised beds are different from planters because they have open rather than closed bottoms. Since raised beds are designed this way, they provide better drainage. Plus, the roots can extend into the ground and seek available nutrients. Having a raised garden bed has a number of other advantages, notably: • It provides a strong barrier against weeds and pests • Its soil doesn’t compact or erode away in the case of heavy rain • It allows you to plant earlier in the season, since soil that’s above ground is warmer and drains better Lastly, gardening with raised beds is a great option for people with limited mobility or back problems. If the bed is high enough, you can tend to the garden without bending over.

How to keep your appliances running like new If you’ve recently purchased new appliances, you may be wondering how to make sure they continue to run. Here’s what you need to know. Refrigerator Don’t pack your fridge too full, as this can block airflow and make the components work harder than necessary. You should also vacuum the compressor and wipe the door gasket with soapy water at least twice a year. Stove and oven Keep the oven clear of food buildup by periodically running the self-clean feature or manually scrubbing it down. Keep electric coils or gas elements clean and avoid dragging your pots and pans over glass-ceramic cooktops. Wash the surface regularly with warm, soapy water or a special cleaner. Dishwasher Always rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. If there’s a filter, make sure to clean it regularly so it doesn’t

get clogged with food particles. Once a month, run it on empty with vinegar to keep it clean. Washer Never overload your washing machine and make sure to empty clothing pockets so the drum doesn’t get damaged. Run a monthly cleaning cycle with hot water and vinegar. Always keep the door open after a wash to allow the interior to completely dry. Dryer Clean the lint trap after every cycle and wash it monthly to make certain the filter doesn’t get clogged. At least once a year, get your dryer ducts professionally cleaned. This will ensure that your machine runs smoothly and decrease the risk for house fires. To find out more about how to take care of your specific appliance, be sure to consult your owner’s manual. Though these tips are a great start, they shouldn’t replace the care instructions provided by the manufacturer.

4 easy ways to revitalize your home Here are some easy ways to perk up any room in your house. 1. Add a bright rug. A cheerful print will infuse new life into the surrounding space. Just be sure that it’s large enough for all the furniture in the area to rest on it. 2. Change your linens. Curtains, bedding and towels can make a big difference in the look of a room. Swap out what you have now for bright prints and cheery colours. 3. Get some greenery. Plants are the perfect design accent. If you don’t have a green thumb, mimic the look with artificial flowers or plants. 4. Refresh your walls. A fresh coat of paint can work wonders. Whether you

choose a fun new colour or stick to neutrals, your home will feel brand new. Updating your home doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. If you’re on a budget, try simply rearranging your furniture or moving some of your decor around. The space will feel new and it won’t cost you a thing.

The best storage solutions for every room in your home Here’s a room by room look at some of the best solutions available. Kitchen Install hidden trays under your cabinets to hide chargers, coffee pods and other essentials. In addition, placing pull-out shelves in cupboards will make it easier to organize your items. Bathroom Store your cleaning supplies on a Lazy Susan to make them easy to find when you need them. Use baskets to hold things like bath towels or toilet paper. Living room Put a bowl on the coffee table to stylishly corral remote controls, magazi nes and other items. Additionally, a storage ottoman is perfect for holding throws and pillows.

Bedrooms Take advantage of the space under your bed by adding drawers or using under-thebed storage boxes. Garage Install overhead racks near the ceiling. This allows you to incorporate storage in the garage without sacrificing parking space. Use this area to hold stuff you don’t need to access often, like seasonal decorations and sporting gear. Workshop, office or craft room Mount a pegboard above your work area and use it to organize your tools or supplies. By hanging things on the wall, they’ll be easier to find and you’ll free up some room. In addition, be sure to use the vertical space in your home. Install shelves above doors, get extra tall bookcases and put hooks on the back of closet doors.

DIY or don’t: tips for your next home renovation While a number of home projects can be completed by the average DIYer, others should be left to the professionals. When deciding whether you should do it yourself or delegate, ask yourself these questions: Do I have the skills? If you can’t confidently say that you know what you’re doing, hire a professional. Do I have the tools? If the job requires special gear, think twice. Purchasing equipment is expensive and certain power tools and

machines may not be easy to use for a novice. Do I have the time? You may be capable of completing the renovation, but if it takes too much of your personal time, it may not be worth it. In general, cosmetic upgrades can be successfully completed by those without much experience. However, any renovation that involves plumbing, electrical work or the structure of your home, should be left to the professionals.

Spring maintenance: 5 key things to inspect outside your home When spring arrives, it’s important to inspect the exterior of your home to make sure it hasn’t been damaged over the winter. Here are five key things you should check. 1. The roof. A visual inspection from the ground or a window will indicate if immediate repairs are needed. In particular, look out for curled, wavy or missing shingles. Also, check the ceilings inside your house for signs of water infiltration. 2. Gutters and spouts. Make sure they’re still firmly attached to the house and that nothing is blocking water from flowing through them. Remove any debris that’s accumulated over the winter. 3. Foundation. Examine the concrete for cracks or signs of water damage. Even the smallest fissure can cause big problems for your home. If you see any signs of degradation, schedule a repair as soon as possible. 4. Balcony or patio. Clean your deck thoroughly and secure any loose boards. Wood patios should be stained every one to three years. If it needs to be done this spring, sand the surface and apply your chosen stain. 5. Windows and doors. Check the caulking around each window and door, and replace it if necessary. Inspect wooden frames to make sure they don’t show signs of water infiltration or rot. If you notice any major damage during your inspection, be sure to make the needed repairs.

3 springtime home improvement projects Are you thinking about updating your home this spring? If so, these three projects are perfectly suited to the season. 1. Upgrade the landscaping. Spring is the perfect time to upgrade flower beds and walkways or even install a pool or hot tub. Your garden

will have time to grow in and you’ll be able to enjoy your new outdoor space all summer long. 2. Rebuild or refinish the deck. If your deck has seen better days, this is the ideal time to repair or rebuild it. Consider expanding it to create zones for eating, cooking and relaxing. 3. Replace the siding. If your siding took a beating over the winter, now’s the right time to replace it. Choose a quality product and consider using a more modern colour. Cool tones like grey, blue and green have been popular in recent years. Spring is the best time of year to tackle most outdoor projects. Just be sure to get to them before the hotter weather arrives.

Spring cleaning: are you forgetting to tidy these parts of your home? To guarantee that this year’s spring cleaning is a success, target these often-neglected areas of your home. • Refrigerator. Remove everything from the fridge and throw out anything that’s past its expiration date. Take out shelves and drawers, scrub them using warm, soapy water and then replace them. Don’t use bleach or other strong cleaning products that shouldn’t come into contact with food. • Bedding. Wash your duvets, comforters and pillows in the washing machine using the gentle cycle. Run the rinse cycle twice to be sure all the soap is removed. If your machine isn’t big enough to fit a comforter or duvet, or you want to do it all at once, head to a local laundromat.

• Blinds. Dust vinyl, aluminum or wood blinds with a vacuum or a microfibre duster on both sides. If there’s a buildup of dirt, wash with a sponge and a solution of water and vinegar. Fabric shades can be vacuumed or brought to the dry cleaner. • Walls and ceilings. Remove cobwebs caught in the corners using a vacuum and wash the ceiling with an extendable sponge mop and slightly soapy water. Continue by cleaning the walls in the same way and giving the baseboards a good scrub. Once you’re done, make it a point to reclean these areas every few months. This will ensure your home is tidier throughout the year and minimize the amount of work to be done next spring.
