Plan the perfect wedding in 15 steps You’re getting married! Congratulations! Now it’s time to plan the wedding. Here are 15 steps you should follow (not necessarily in order) so that everything is perfect on the big day. Before you start, set your budget and stick to it at all costs. If you think you might lose your head, your best bet is to hire a wedding planner.

1

Decide on your theme. Hollywood glamour, car-themed, turquoise and white — you know the possibilities are endless!

candles, draperies) will create the perfect ambiance?

7

Prepare your registry and your gift bags. What household items do you and your partner need — a toaster, wine glasses, silk sheets? Open a registry to avoid receiving duplicate gifts. And remember to thank your guests with a personalized keepsake.

8

Secure an entertainment team. Do you need a master of ceremonies? Will a DJ, a string quartet or a rock band be in charge of the music?

9

Hire a photographer and a videographer. Who will immortalize your magical day? Take a look at several portfolios to find the pro that understands your vision.

2

Draw up your guest list and send invitations. Will it be a grand affair or an intimate gathering? Who do you want by your side on your special day? Make sure everyone can make it by sending out save the date cards and invitations early.

3

Plan the wedding procession. Who will you pick to be the best man, and who gets to be the maid of honour? Have you found a flower girl and a ring bearer?

4

Select the officiant and the type of ceremony. Courthouse wedding or religious tradition? Officiated by a priest or by a friend? Make sure that the option you choose welcomes your personal touch. your venues. Where will the 5 Find ceremony and the reception be held — in a church, at the beach, in a grand hotel, at the park or in a cozy cabin? Will you need to rent any equipment?

6

Dream up the floral arrangements and decor. Which flowers will be featured in the bride’s bouquet, the boutonnieres and the centrepieces? What kind of accents (balloons,

10

Find a caterer and a bakery. What will be on the menu, and how will food be served? Will there be a candy bar, or even a chocolate fountain? Don’t forget the cake!

11

Plan your grand entrance. Will you arrive at the ceremony on horseback? On your bike? In a limo, a sports car or a hot-air balloon?

12

Purchase your rings. What will the objects symbolizing your union look like? Will they be golden, diamond-studded, massive or subdued? Choose wisely, because you’ll (hopefully!) be wearing them for life.

13

Shop for your outfits. Bowtie or regular tie? White gown or colourful sundress? Your attire for the event should reflect your personal style and make you feel absolutely stunning!

14

Book your beauty appointments. Have you called your hair stylist, your makeup artist and your esthetician yet? And what about the nail salon? Don’t forget to plan for trial sessions.

15

Write up your vows. What words will you choose to describe your feelings? Time to brainstorm! Finally, draft your prenuptial agreement and marriage contract — a task that’s decidedly unromantic, but essential nonetheless. Remember to book everything as early as possible to avoid scrambling for a backup plan. And one last thing: where will you spend your honeymoon? Send your invitations early to make sure that all of your loved ones can be present for your big day.

Making it legal in British Columbia Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage license, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage license in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No license is issued until the courts finalize a divorce; normally 31 days after the Courts issue the divorce decree. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered

with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage.

Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change

of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Destination weddings: are they legally recognized at home?

The beautiful ocean in front of you, the sand beneath your feet and your friends and family gathered to help you celebrate your love for each other. You’ve always dreamed about getting married on the beach and now that you’re engaged, your destination wedding is within reach. But there’s a little voice in the back of your head telling you to slow down and think about it. What if your dream wedding isn’t valid at home? Fortunately, if you’re legally able to get married at home, and if your wedding is legal in the country you choose, the marriage should be valid in Canada. Make sure, however, that you confirm with the embassy or consulate of the destination country to find out what their marriage requirements are. You should also check with your provincial government to see if you need to register your wedding once you’re home. If you’re still not sure about it, there’s nothing stopping you from having a small civil ceremony at home before having a symbolic wedding wherever you choose.

Secrets to at-home weddings Many couples preparing for their trip down the aisle follow the familiar sentiments expressed by Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” Such couples feel “there’s no place like home” when hosting a wedding ceremony or reception. There are many benefits to hosting a wedding at home. Homes often hold couples’ most cherished memories, and hosting a backyard celebration or an intimate indoor ceremony at your own home or the abode of a loved one can be a cost-effective way to have a good time. Here are some tips to help couples navigate hosting an at-home wedding. Access the space The average home is not equipped to handle hundreds of guests, wait staff,

Book an officiant early Confirm with an officiant that they can oversee the wedding proceedings at your home. Many religious officials are not able to perform ceremonies outside of a place of worship. Learn if it’s legal Certain municipalities may require permits for parking on streets and much more. Do your research. You may need to coordinate parking at a nearby lot (like a school closed on the weekend) and shuttle people to your home.

caterers and parked cars. Concessions in regard to comfort and safety will have to be made when drawing up the guest list. The wedding resource The Knot advises the general rule is six to 10 square feet of floor space per guest for row seating. You’ll probably need even more space for buffet tables, seating and a dance floor. You will likely need to temporarily move furniture to comfortably fit

everyone indoors – or rent a large enough tent for a backyard wedding. Hire a cleaning service It’s important to present a clean, inviting space when hosting a wedding at home. A cleaning service will conduct a thorough cleaning before and after the festivities, freeing up your time for last-minute tasks or to embark on your honeymoon.

Consult with an insurance carrier Inquire if having such a large party at home is covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy, particularly if your home is damaged or someone gets injured during the festivities. Supplemental liability insurance or an umbrella policy may offer greater protection. Weddings at home can be a unique opportunity for couples who love the comfort and familiarity of their homes.

Does your wedding have a theme? If you haven’t chosen a theme yet, that’s okay. But if you’d like a little pizzazz on your big day, choosing one will certainly help. Organize your wedding with a specific theme in order to have a common thread throughout all the elements. That includes centrepieces, decorations, bride and groom outfits, menu, reception hall and music — the possibilities are endless. A theme also helps you choose from among all the ideas you’re thinking of, not to mention that your suppliers will be able to make more appropriate suggestions. You don’t need to choose an extravagant theme; you can simply choose a colour that sets the tone for your wedding, from the flowers to the bridesmaids’ dresses, cake, invitations and wedding favours. You’d like a more elaborate theme? Think about something you both like. It can be an era, a country, a passion, a decorative style or a mood. You might also be inspired by the season of your wedding or by the reception hall. In fact, the hall should be taken into consideration when choosing the theme, and vice versa — let’s just say that organizing a wedding with a western theme in a fancy hotel could pose a few problems. And don’t forget to make sure that your theme fits with the budget that you’ve set. So, will your wedding theme be coral and lime green, eco-friendly, disco, medieval?

How to supplement your wedding invitations with a wedding website Wedding invitations traditionally include a few different cards and a whole lot of information. If you’re planning a wedding and want to cut down on the amount of paper you send, a wedding website is the perfect way to communicate with your guests. This includes the full names of the bride and groom to be, the location of the wedding and the date and time it’ll take place. Very few of us are able to say that we fell in love at a young age. Even fewer of us are able to say that we married our high school sweethearts.

were all ready and waiting for the phone call, and I was the only one that didn’t know,” said Taylor with a laugh.

Taylor Aquila, a Fernie local, and Evan Burgess, a Jaffray local, met as youth while attending Fernie Secondary School. After school, each went their separate ways. Taylor attended school for five years in Alberta, while Evan stuck to doing what he loved; being in the wilderness. His work as a hunting guide took him around the world, but eventually the two decided to settle down in Fernie together.

Both Taylor and Evan’s families have been in the Elk Valley for generations. Taylor comes from a large Italian family, with deep roots in Fernie. Evan is the grandchild of a Jaffray local who has 14 brothers and sisters, the majority of which still live in the area.

After seven years together, Evan proposed. A year later the two were married, and purchased a home in Fernie, which strengthened the roots of their already deep-rooted families. The proposal came after Evan’s brothers convinced him that nobody else would put up with his extravagant and long-stretched hunting adventures. “Christmas is my favourite time of year, and I always said I wanted to get engaged around Christmas,” said Taylor. “On the 23rd (of December), he forced me go skiing, and I didn’t want to go because my whole family was here.” Apologetically Taylor left with Evan to go skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort, unbeknownst to her, her entire family already knew what was about to happen. The two set out for White Pass, and upon reaching Lost Boys Cabin, Evan proposed. “We only did the one run, and went home… They

The two were married on Evan’s family’s property, a gorgeous stretch of 180 acres tucked into the Jaffray mountainside. The ceremony took place beside a creek that runs through the property.

Needless to say, The Burgess’s wedding was big. Due to the size of the wedding, the couple chose Evan’s family’s property because of how many people it could accommodate. In the end, Taylor and Evan narrowed their list down to 300. “Our list was probably the biggest struggle of our entire wedding, to try and narrow down the number of people,” said Taylor. Asked what their experience was with so many people attending, Taylor said it was good, but admitted she always dreamed of going away to be married. “I just knew our families were so big, I was always like, we need to go away to get married or its just going to be this big party,” said Taylor. However, even though the thought of a large wedding was daunting, they both agreed that having their family and friends at their wedding was of the utmost importance.

One hundred people attended Taylor’s wedding shower, eighteen girls attended Taylor’s stag and 22 fellows attended Evan’s. For their reception dinner they invited strictly immediate family. A cousin of Taylor’s owns a hair studio, which was closed to the public on the day of the wedding to accommodate all the girls. Many of the wedding’s 300 guests, were put to work setting up the space and helping to get it ready. The Burgess’s wedding was the definition of homemade. From the benches to the wooden arches, everything was made by members of their family, by hand. Looking back, Taylor and Evan wouldn’t change a thing. However, Taylor passed on one piece of critical advice that she took from a friend the day of her wedding. “Just enjoy the day because it goes by so fast and then you’re going to regret all the stuff you didn’t get to experience when you’re so worried about everything else,” said Taylor. Leading up to the wedding, there was the occasional stressful moment. However, once the wedding day came, all those fears went out the window. Taylor gave more advice during the wedding planning stage: don’t stress each other out. In the end, everything works out. “The best thing I did; Evan and I just had fun the whole day,” added Taylor. “We didn’t worry about anything. If something went wrong, it went wrong. Everyone’s there just for you to have fun, and it’s the people at the wedding that matter, not the stuff that was there.”

When it comes to your wedding dress, white isn’t your only option If, at a time in the past, the boldest move you could make when it came to the colour of your wedding dress was to pick offwhite instead of a pristine snowy shade, that’s simply no longer the case. Like most rules, the one that dictates the colour of your wedding dress is meant to be broken — and more and more brides are taking the plunge. Read on for some inspiration. Did you know that the white wedding dress has only been popular in North America since the nineteenth century? Before then, it was customary for the bride to wear — you guessed it — a colourful dress! Today, the brightly coloured dress is making a comeback and designers from around the world are reinventing this vintage trend. While shopping for a non-white wedding dress might have been a tricky task a few decades ago, boutiques are now stocked with gowns in every colour of the rainbow — and then some. Whether you’re in the market for an electric pink ball gown or an emerald green A-line, your local bridal boutique is sure to deliver the goods. On the fence about your colour choice because you fear you’ll shock your guests by choosing an unconventional gown? Remember that this is your day and that you have the final say on what you wear. That being said, there are ways to compromise: you could incorporate a coloured sash or veil in your look or choose an all-white dress with colourful stitching. So, will you let your true colours shine through with your dream wedding dress?

Choosing the perfect wedding shoes When it comes to accessories that complement your wedding dress, your shoes are arguably the most important. You want your footwear to both reflect your personal style and be comfortable enough to wear as you dance the night away. Here’s a guide to picking the perfect wedding shoes. • Choose your dress first. You’ll want to match the style of shoes to your dress. • Make sure they fit. The best time to shop for shoes is in the late afternoon. If they’re comfortable after a day of work, they’ll fit perfectly on your wedding day. • Don’t experiment with high heels. If you’re not used to wearing heels, don’t attempt to wear them at your wedding. There are many flat and wedge styles that make beautiful — and comfortable — bridal shoes. • Make a statement. Shoes are a great way to add a pop of colour to your wedding attire. • Bring them to your dress fitting. If your dress is long, it’ll need to be adjusted to the height of your shoes.

Lastly, don’t forget to book a pedicure before your wedding. Nothing looks better in stunning shoes than prettily pampered feet.

• Break them in. Wear your shoes around the house to avoid any nasty surprises on the day of your wedding. If they’re tight or uncomfortable, bring them to a shoemaker to stretch them out a bit.

A dress for everyone Bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, flower girl: how should all these people dress in order to create a harmonious wedding party? Should the bridesmaids all wear the same model of dress? And what about matching colours? The bridesmaids The bridesmaid dresses should blend in with the wedding colours but not with the tablecloths. In other words, be inspired by the decor, but don’t replicate it. Even better, for everyone to feel comfortable, avoid imposing one particular dress on your bridesmaids, unless they all have the same figure and enthusiasm for the idea. Instead, think about choosing a colour, fabric and basic style of dress and allowing each bridesmaid to choose the model that suits her best. This way the visual harmony of the wedding party will be maintained while you still have beautifully unique bridesmaids. Note that specialty stores offer collections of different dresses cut from the same fabric. The mothers of the bride and groom The mother of the bride plays an important role on the big day, and it is essential to differentiate her from the bridesmaids. This can be done especially with the colour of her dress. Her outfit could take into account the main colours of the wedding party and blend in with them; however the style of her dress is always her own choice. When choosing her outfit, the groom’s mother’s goal should be to harmonize so as not to look the odd one out in the wedding photos. The flower girl The little flower girl, walking down the aisle in front of the bride, is usually dressed in white. She’ll love wearing her perfect little princess dress!

Close to home or far away, getting married takes a lot of planning. But according to newlywed couple, Rachel and Ric Behan, getting married doesn’t have to be stressful. The couple, originally from the UK, grew up just 30 minutes apart. Music was what brought the two together, and this has remained their strongest shared passion as the years have gone by. So much so, they were the band at their own wedding. Rachel and Ric first met attending university for music, nine years ago, but it was a university ski trip that sealed the deal. As if it were a scene in a movie, Rachel and Ric sat together on their train ride from the UK to France. “It took about 27 hours to get to France, so we got to know each other rather well on the coach next to each other,” said Rachel. “We knew each other already, but that’s kind of how that flame sparked, if you will.” The couple remained in England for two years before coming to Canada, seven years ago. Their original motive for coming to Fernie was that Rachel’s brother was already here, and he boasted of Fernie’s greatness. “Same boring story as everyone,” said Ric. “Never left. One season became… eight!” After six and a half years in Fernie and eight years together, the two were faced with a tough decision. They knew they wanted to get married, but where? Combined, Rachel and Ric have over 150 family members in the UK. “Do we get married in England, or Canada?” asked Rachel. “That was the hardest part of the whole thing,” added Ric.

In their hearts, the couple wanted to get married in Fernie, but felt a sense of selfishness, as many of their relatives would not be able to join them. In the end they settled on both, and were married again in England, two weeks after their wedding in Fernie. Looking back, Rachel and Ric agreed that deciding where to get married was the most stressful thing about their wedding. For the most part, they said it was a very stress-free wedding. The Behan’s had 38 friends and family attend from the UK, but made sure they didn’t just stay for a few days. “It was pretty important to me that people who were coming to visit had two weeks before the wedding to settle into holiday mode, Fernie lifestyle, and fall in love with Fernie, so that the wedding was a ‘we get it’, rather than a ‘when are you coming home?’” said Rachel. In the days leading up the wedding in the first week of August, Rachel and Ric went on several adventures with guests from abroad, to give them a first-hand look at why they chose to settle where they did. After this, the couple said that many of their guests were pleasantly surprised. But how do you make one of life’s biggest celebrations, stress-free? The couple said the trick was not worrying about all the small things. What happens happens. The wilderness is one of the things that make Fernie so special. Rachel and Ric were appropriately married on a friend’s property down Hartley Lake Road. Everyone camped in tents aside from the couple, who stayed in a cabin on the property. This sparked some trepidation in some of their guests; in particular Rachel’s father who asked her to hire a ranger the day of the wedding to protect them from wildlife. “They’ll smell the food!” said her father. This also posed some problems for the catering

company, who got lost on the way to the wedding with all the food in the back of the truck. Although they were a few minutes late, the dinner went according to plan. Everyone who attended the wedding helped contribute to its success; all 100 guests helped Rachel and Ric transform the area from the ground up. Together they turned an empty lot into something out of a fairy tale. Decorated stone pathways led guests from forest glade, through the trees to riverbank and back. “We had guests helping us put up tents, we really put everyone to work,” said Ric. “The day before the wedding, Ric had his waders on and a beekeepers outfit, because we found a ground wasps nest right at the ceremonial alter,” said Rachel. However, just when they had got rid of the first nest, they found another close by in a tree. “I actually had to cut the tree down in a beekeeper outfit before the wedding, I don’t think a lot of people could say that,” said Ric, laughing. Music was what brought the couple together, and they decided that there was no better way to celebrate this than to play music at their own wedding. This did bring with it some stress, as they were responsible for entertaining the guests. If anything went wrong, it would be on them. Ric admitted this kept them a little bit sober. However, this was a chance to show guests what Rachel and Ric are, and love, together. Looking back, the Behan’s said they wouldn’t do anything differently. “Here, it was perfect. I want to say everything went to plan but we kind of left it very loose, because we didn’t want to … the best nights are the unplanned ones,” said Ric. “We enjoyed the whole journey,” said Rachel.

Alpine Lodge FERNIE, BC For a beautiful, intimate mountain wedding.

A wedding with mouth-watering appeal The wedding meal — which takes up most of the evening as well as a large part of the budget — has to be chosen carefully. Here are some mouth-watering ideas that we hope will inspire you. The possibilities abound where wedding menus are concerned: banquet, barbecue, tapas, cocktail party, buffet, etc. Choose a formula and foods that are in line with your budget and your wedding theme. If you opt for a cocktail party, provide an area where guests can sit comfortably and high tables where they can put their glasses. Tapas have the advantage of being suitable for a variety of different serving styles, such as a sit-down dinner, as a buffet or for a cocktail party. When it comes to desserts, the wedding cake is definitely the star of the show. However, not everyone likes cake, so it’s always a good idea to give your guests a choice: cupcakes, a chocolate fountain, a dessert buffet, fruit carvings, pastry trays — anything goes. Want to offer a little “extra” to your guests? To serve a wider variety of dishes, add a grill for stir-fries, or set up a candy or chocolate bar for the enjoyment of young and old alike. You could also have a sundae bar or a lemonade bar to refresh your guests on a hot summer’s day. Whatever type of menu you opt for, be sure to take all your guests into consideration. Do you have a menu that children will like or menu choices suitable for people with food allergies? Your guests will appreciate your kind attention to their needs.

• Located at Fernie Alpine Resort. • Intimate outdoor & indoor settings for any season. • Exclusive use of lodge and all amenities. • Fully catered & licensed. Relax and enjoy while the culinary team creates a myriad of contemporary dining options.

Learn the art of choosing flowers From the bridal bouquet to the decorations, flowers are going to be a major feature of your wedding. And not only do they create an atmosphere that is both festive and harmonious, they have to do it without breaking your budget. But don’t worry; it’s possible to achieve that goal with a bit of ingenuity. Choose your wedding dress first; it will influence the creation of your bouquet. A patterned dress, for instance, will require a fairly discreet bouquet. You should also take into account your figure: if you are petite, you should avoid cascading bouquets, which are more suitable for tall, slender brides. And make sure your bouquet isn’t too heavy, as you’ll be carrying it for a long time. You have a limited budget? Choose native flowers that are in season or exotic flowers that are readily available. Think foliage; it will add volume to your bouquet and it’s inexpensive. When choosing flowers, you may also want to consider their meanings. For example, you may prefer red roses (love) or white roses (pure love) rather than yellow roses (infidelity) and daffodils (coldness). Choose flowers that don’t wilt quickly, that don’t stain and that don’t have an overpowering scent. Once you’ve decided on your bouquet, it’s time to consider the buttonholes, bridesmaids’ bouquets and the reception hall decorations. All these elements should take inspiration from your bouquet. You could use one of the flowers from your bouquet for the groom’s buttonhole and similar but smaller bouquets for the bridesmaids and table centrepieces. Need some inspiration? A professional florist is sure to have lots of great ideas to help you.

Non-floral boutonnieres and corsages: reinventing tradition Traditionally at weddings, women wear corsages while the groom and other men sport floral boutonnieres. The people wearing them often include the groomsmen, the couple’s parents and grandparents and any other family members that the bride and groom want to honour. If you’re not excited about pinning a flower to your lapel or wearing one on your wrist, here are some ways to put a fresh spin on the tradition. • Herbs and fruit: berries and herbs look elegant while still being fresh and green. • Colourful buttons: you can make unique boutonnieres and corsages with an assortment of buttons. • Wooden tees: if the bride and groom are avid golfers, tie a few colourful tees together with a bow. • Feathers: they can be as colourful as flowers but are unexpected and whimsical. • Ornaments made of twigs: a shooting star, a heart or a simple wreath made of dried twigs would be eye-catching.

The best part about most of these options is that, unlike fresh flowers, they can be kept as souvenirs of your big day.

Three unique wedding reception ideas If you’re getting married, but the thought of a traditional wedding reception leaves you cold, try one of these three fun alternatives: 1. Brunch reception For early birds, a morning ceremony and brunch reception is the way to go. Ask your preferred breakfast spot to cater and then serve all of the breakfast classics with espresso drinks to wake your guests up. Just because it’s early in the day doesn’t mean you have to have a dry wedding — mimosas anyone? 2. Backyard barbeque If you prefer to spend your Saturday nights drinking beer and hanging out with friends, why not have a backyard wedding? Find a caterer that specializes in barbeque and get dirty with some ribs or pulled pork. Serve local craft beers and set up some old-fashioned lawn games. 3. Cocktail party Do you find banquets a bore but still want to dance the night away? Host a cocktail party! Your venue can pass around lots of appetizers and you can create a signature cocktail for the night. With this type of reception you can use a smaller space to accommodate your guests. A wedding reception that breaks with tradition can be more memorable, festive and affordable than the standard dinner and dancing that follows most nuptials. Your options are limited only by your imagination.

The Hidden Gem Of The Kootenays Reserve this beautiful venue overlooking a breathtaking golf course.

How to handle rain on your wedding day Brides and grooms fear the prospects of rainy wedding days. But even couples who have contended with everything from a few drops to an all-out deluge on their wedding days look back fondly on the ceremonies and receptions. In fact, how couples handle any precipitation can affect how happy the festivities may be. Have a rainy day game plan. Rain affects outdoor weddings more than any other type of ceremony or reception. If the goal is to exchange vows outdoors, work with the venue to make this possible with a tent or gazebo. However, if the weather is especially foul and windy, move it indoors.

cover the costs of nonrefundable cancellations. Move past it quickly. It is okay to get upset if the weather turns for the worse, but don’t dwell on it. Guests will sense negative energy, and couples should set the tone of sticking it through despite a little adversity – which can be a good lesson for the marriage as well.

Invest in golf umbrellas. Couples who live in notoriously damp climates can purchase golf umbrellas, which tend to be larger than the average umbrella, and keep them stationed in decorated stands to ease transitions between wedding sites and keep everyone as dry as possible. Wear waterproof cosmetics. Women in the bridal party, including the bride, can ask their makeup artists to use durable, waterproof products.

This can help salvage beautifully composed looks should some drops begin to fall. Know the vendors’ rain policies. Some live musicians will not play in damp weather. Florists may need to make accommodations for arrangements blowing in the wind. Couples need to understand what they’re responsible for and what may be covered if a weather event occurs. Embrace the rain. While a couple probably won’t wish for rain, there are some benefits to overcast skies, say the wedding professionals at Brides magazine. Flowers are less likely to wilt in raining conditions. In the absence of bright sunlight, outdoor photographs can really pop. Rain is romantic and may compel couples and their guests to cuddle close. Don’t let rain on a wedding day become a drag. With preparation and perspective, couples can handle rainy wedding days.

How to plan a kid-friendly wedding Are there children on your wedding day guest list? If so, make sure the event is as fun for them as it is for the adults.

During the reception Take care of your young guests as soon as they arrive. If the reception is taking place outside, set up a bouncy castle or an obstacle course. Makeup artists, clowns and magicians are other options to keep the little ones entertained.

Hire a babysitter Employing an experienced babysitter will allow parents to fully enjoy the day themselves. A good rule of thumb is one babysitter per five children, but this will vary depending on the kids’ ages. During the ceremony Don’t seat all the kids together. Instead, ask that parents keep their children close by to ensure they stay calm and quiet. You may also choose to ask kids to participate in the ceremony, for example by throwing rose petals or blowing bubbles as you walk down the aisle.

During the meal Keep children in mind when planning your menu. They’ll prefer wellknown dishes like chicken or pasta. Also, request that they be served first — to most kids, a five-course meal is a long, boring affair. Help them stay patient by providing some toys or colouring books. During the evening Make sure the children have access to a quiet, comfortable spot where they can play while the adults finish their meal. You may also want to bring a few movies for the little ones to watch when it starts to get late.

The history of the wedding cake The tall, tiered wedding cake — with or without toppers — is one of the most widespread wedding traditions in the western world. You’ve probably tasted a slice or two over the years, but what do you know about the origins of this sweet nuptial custom? Historians believe that the concept of wedding cakes can be traced back to ancient Rome. At that time, it was customary to break a wafer or loaf of sweet bread over the bride’s head with the goal of invoking happiness and fertility. In medieval Europe, wedding guests typically stacked small pastries as high as possible, and the bride and groom would kiss over the resulting pile of sweetness. The higher the pastry tower was, the happier the couple would be. Sweet, tall, tiered cakes like those seen today in weddings across North America only became commonplace around the eighteenth century. Nowadays, bakeries create wedding cakes that are true works of art. Anything goes when it comes to the shape, flavour and colour — and toppers are no longer limited to the tiny bride and groom model.

A SYMBOLIC GESTURE The tradition of the wedding cake being sliced by the bride and groom dates back to the Middle Ages. The gesture symbolized the first action taken by the bride and groom as a legitimate couple. Traditionally, the groom rests his hand on the bride’s as a sign of fertility and protection.

Fabulous wedding favours and unique bridal party gifts Trying to decide on wedding favours? Or maybe you’re wondering what types of gifts to purchase for your bridal party? In either case, here are a few ideas to look into. For the guests • Flip flops: these will be a hit when people’s feet start to hurt from dancing • Flower seeds or bulbs: your guests can grow your wedding flowers at home • Coaster with your initials: opt for a natural material like cork or wood For the bridesmaids • Tote bags: have hemp or canvas bags personalized with their names • Jewelry: a dainty necklace or bracelet that matches their dresses • Floral robes: they’ll have something to wear while getting ready and they’ll look great in your photos

For the groomsmen • Flasks: if they’re a group that likes to party, these will get a lot of use • Monogrammed pocket watches: a good timepiece never goes out of style • Fun socks: men don’t always get a chance to show their personality, so get them some fun socks to wear with their suits

Show some appreciation to your guests and bridal party by giving special wedding favours and gifts. And be sure to accompany the selected token with a simple thank you.

Wedding reception

Goodies to keep the party going If you’re worried about an empty dance floor at your wedding reception, why not treat your guests to wedding favours that’ll get them in a festive mood? Bubbly duo Give your guests a bottle of sparkling wine to open during the evening and attach a jar of bubbles to complete the gift. Kids in attendance will have a ton of fun with the bubbles while the adults raise their glasses. For breathtaking photos, request that attendees blow bubbles as you start your first dance. Slippers Put slippers at your guests’ disposal. As the evening progresses, those in high heels will be happy to have something more comfortable to wear on the dance floor.

DIY cocktails Give each guest a personalized glass to take home. Include a miniature bottle of liquor and a note inviting them to create their own cocktail. All that’s left is a trip to the bar to find some mixers. Late-night bites Whip up a homemade treat to munch on as the evening nears its end. Lay out cookies, chocolates or assorted candies for the sweet-toothed among your guests, and prepare seasoned popcorn (try dusting it with curry, paprika or chili powder) for those who prefer a salty snack.

Glow sticks! Streamers! Beach balls! Provide your guests with fun party accessories and watch the dance floor light up.
