A New Chapter for Elk Valley Hospice People are now becoming more aware of end of life issues and services thanks in part to the Elk Valley Hospice. January 26 marked the opening of “The Crossing” an information and coffee kiosk in the Fernie hospital lobby. “The Crossing” is run by Elk Valley Hospice volunteers Monday to Friday. Hospital visitors can buy a tea or coffee while they wait for their appointments or for lab work. The kiosk also sells items such as puzzle books, snacks, adult colouring books and other items donated by locals such as knitted baby toques, although the main purpose of the kiosk is to build awareness of the organization and its services. This kiosk gives the hospice a presence in the community it has never had before. Approachable volunteers are available with knowledge and resources on death, dying, and grieving. The Elk Valley Hospice “believes in living until you die and dying with dignity.” Hospice volunteers provide support to individuals and their families during end of life experiences. All volunteers with the Elk Valley Hospice must attend an extensive training program at the College of the Rockies before working directly with clients. Once trained, volunteers are mentored by experienced volunteers, many of whom are or were nurses in the health care system. The Elk Valley Hospice can help in many ways. Volunteers may sit with individuals as a quiet companion, a listening ear, or as someone to talk to and share with. Often times the support they provide is more for the family than for the individual in end of life stages. Regardless of who benefits directly from the support, it can improve quality of life for all involved, something everyone deserves. The death of an individual is not the end for the Elk Valley Hospice. The organization understands that people are left behind to deal with a loss and this is an incredibly difficult time. Some volunteers are specially trained in grief support. “Grief is a process and it doesn’t happen overnight” says one of these volunteers, “it doesn’t have to be done alone.” All services provided by the Elk Valley Hospice are confidential and can be done in the hospital, home or over the phone. Volunteers can help anywhere in the Elk Valley including Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford and surrounding areas. How to recognize a heart attack

(NC) Your heart needs a constant supply of blood to keep beating. When that flow is blocked for any reason, the result is a heart attack. Thousands of Canadians die from heart attacks each year because they don’t receive medical treatment fast enough. The signs of a heart attack can vary from person to person and they may not always be sudden or severe. Keep in mind that although chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom in both men and women, some people do not feel chest pain. And, some people may experience only one symptom, while others have a combination of the following: • Chest discomfort (uncomfortable chest pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain, burning or heaviness) • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (neck, jaw, shoulder, arms, back) • Shortness of breath • Sweating • Nausea • Light-headedness If you experience any of those signs, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately, or have someone call for you. When a heart attack strikes, getting medical help quickly may not just save your life, it can also reduce the damage to your heart muscle – damage that can eventually lead to heart failure.
