WELCOME to Fernie

W

elcome to the 2015 edition of the Fernie Summer Guide. We trust that you will find the information in the pages that follow useful, whether you live here or have come to Fernie for a visit! After a most unusual winter, lacking in the usual abundance of powder, and the early onset of spring everyone is looking forward to a sunny summer and all of the activities the season brings with it. If your love for the outdoors finds you hiking and biking the variety of trails that wind their way through old growth forests, or over grassy plateaus to summit one of the majestic mountains that surround Fernie, be sure to take your camera! The picturesque scenery is unmatched. A trip to the Elk River is an amazing way to spend a day. Whether you want to run the rapids in a raft, float in a tube or don your hip waders and wet a line, the Elk has something for everyone. A day of exploration for the family can start with searching for the ghost town of Coal Creek, which visitors can reach by heading east to Coal Creek road, and traveling for eight kilometers. There is little remaining of this once thriving community, although foundations of the old houses still remain. Stop by the Fernie Information Centre before embarking on your journey to get directions to one of the largest fossil ammonites ever found which is in the Coal Creek drainage area. Fernie is home to an 18-hole championship golf course that offers a fine balance between a challenge for the seasoned golfer and playable for the novice. No matter what your skill level, the spectacular view from the clubhouse deck will help you forget the holes you want to. There is no place like Fernie, which offers something for everyone, with activities from the adventurous to the relaxed and everything in between. Regardless of what brings you to Fernie, we are sure you will keep coming back. There is always something new to discover!

Let’s go ride By Mark Gallup ~ Fernie Bike Guides Finding trailheads can be a treasure hunt. In Fernie we have a great bike culture. Volunteers build and maintain trails through the Fernie Mountain Bike Club and Fernie Trail Alliance. You can find their new trail map at any bike shop in town.

The Lazy Lizard

This new trail begins with a short climb on the uphill side of the yellow Island Lake gate, 2 km from Highway #3. The starting spot is the winter parking lot for cat-skiing guests. The trail then contours through old growth forest, with boardwalks and sturdy bridges crossing wet areas. The last 2 km of the trail is still under construction. It will be complete sometime this summer. In the meantime, enjoy 5 km of beautiful trail suitable for all levels of riders and very popular with families. A casual up and back can take up to one and a half hours.

The Montane Trail

Another new trail starts at the Aquatic Centre. Head south on what looks like a quad track. Parallel to Coal Creek Road, the trail will lead to a bridge. Cross the creek and make an immediate left. This is a good place to pull out the map, as there are options. My favourite is to climb Lower Uprooted, cross River Road, climb New Roots, and then descend Roots back to River Road. Cross it again and then down Montane trail. The trail makes its way back towards Coal Creek. This is about a one hour loop.

Mountain Biking Events

Don’t forget to check out some of Fernie’s endless mountain biking events. Now in their third year, the annual Fernie Enduro race attracts upwards of 100 riders. Racing down Island Lake Lodge’s trails, including Verboton, Slunt/Brokenback and Project 9, this social, fun event attracts riders of all skill levels. (Held the last weekend in August). Take a shuttle up to the famous Porky Blue Trail and watch riders cycle through 45 kilometers of trail in the annual Porky Blue Bike Ride and Roast. After the 1,500 vertical meter descent, riders meet at the Fernie Hotel and Pub for a good old pig roast, where participants have the chance to win door prizes. (Held the first weekend in August). Make your way to Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR) to watch athletes brave a 640-vertical meter climb during the Lost Boys Lungbuster Hill Climb. Taking about an hour, biking enthusiasts put the pedal to the metal as they race to the top of the Elk Chairlift, across the Lizard Bowl, across the Curry Bowl and up the Timber side of the mountain. (Held the third weekend in July).

Hyper Ventilation ~ Hyper Extension

Looking for something more challenging? Follow the instructions above, for Montane Trail. When you get to the top of New Roots, head for the big Hyper Ventilation sign. Steep 180 switchbacks are on the menu for lovers of a good climb. You could climb all the way to the top of Castle Rock, and wonder whether to descend South Castle or Southern Comfort. Save Castle and Comfort for your next visit. Hyper Extension is better. All it takes is climbing to the upper bench. Every inch of the climb is paid back with hyper-goodness! Interested in riding? Visit ferniebikeguides. ca or call 250-423-3650.

Roller girls lead the pack Bumping, plowing and racing their way to the top, Avalanche City Roller Derby has made a strong name for itself in the Elk Valley community.

W

ith three teams in the league, these groups of fierce skaters are on a mission to develop flat roller derby skaters into athletic and empowered skating enthusiasts. Fernie’s first co-ed junior roller derby squad, the Avalanche City BombsQUAD team encourages youth between the ages of seven and 18 to test their skating skills. Mark your schedule with the Avalanche City Roller Girls (ACRG) home games this summer, where a group of 14 tough ladies battle it out for the win at the Fernie Memorial Arena. With a passion for the sport of derby and a desire to play on a more competitive level, these ladies travel throughout British Columbia in the hopes of conquering some of the best teams in Canada. Just recently the team was accepted into the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) — a sanctioning body for games, in which the best teams in the world compete for rankings and championship trophies. This dynamic group of ladies also recently

16 Summer 2015 - www.thefreepress.ca

opened up their team to an alternate B-team, where new players have the opportunity to compete against other teams while they improve their skating skills and learn the rules of the game. No matter the skill level, this nonprofit, community-based organization works together to recognize and promote derby as a legitimate, tough, full contact sport where ladies can dominate. This group is also very involved in the community, continuously participating in local fundraisers and establishing their own fundraisers in order to make the sport affordable for anyone interested in whipping out their skates and plunging into this advanced, powerful game. In fact, last year, the ACRG hosted two fundraisers in order to raise enough money to purchase a game bus. So grab your friends this summer and support these ladies as they race their way into the heart of the community and into Canada’s official derby rankings. Photo: Warren Bruns

Coal Mining

Did you know that the beautiful Elk Valley is one of British Columbia’s most important industrial areas, home to five coal mines that produce 80% of Canada’s steelmaking coal? Take the opportunity to check one out on a mine tour.

Teck, behind the seams Every July and August, Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and Elkford Visitor Centre run bus tours of Teck’s open pit coal mines, which are all within one hour’s drive of Fer nie. 18 Summer 2015 - www.thefreepress.ca

Buses stop at specially-placed lookout areas so you can safely get out of the bus to watch giant mechanical shovels clear waste rock away from the coal seams that run diagonally across the mountain. The coal is carried by house-sized haul trucks to the processing plant, where it is sorted, washed and dried before being loaded onto the CP Rail train and transported through B.C. to be shipped around the world to make steel. On the tour you’ll also see the maintenance shop that helps to keep the equipment in good

working order, including stacks of large truck tires that cost over $40,000 each! Look out on the access roads to the operations – hundreds of elk, deer and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep live on the mine properties. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable mining and was named one of Canada’s most sustainable companies in 2014. On the tour you will also visit areas where mined land is being reclaimed and replanted with native species, and find out about the company’s water management work. Photos: Teck

more great adventures Rockclimbing

While Fernie is not a rock-climbing destination itself, you don’t have to travel too far to get a taste of it. Locals who want to scale a cliff head down to Montana’s Stone Hill, just across the U.S. border. It was actually a group of Fernie locals who first climbed at Stone Hill in the 70s, and they continue to develop lines there. The Highway of Love trek winds around the beautiful Lake Koocanusa — offering great lakeviews. Another nearby option is Lakit Lake near Cranbrook. For those wanting to give their kids a taste of climbing, take them to Fernie’s indoor rock walls in Evolution Gym or at the College of the Rockies to learn the basics.

Ancient Cottonwood Trail

About 12 kilometres west of Fernie in Morrissey is the Ancient Cottonwood Trail. The short and easy walk through the forest shows off an old-growth Western Red Cedar Forest, with 400 year old black Cottonwood trees. Towering as high as a 10 story building, these trees provide homes for many species, including dens for black bears, nests for the endangered Western Screech-Owl, and habitats for songbirds and insects.

Skateboard/Dirt Jump – see page 43 Tennis

Two outdoor courts are available at Fernie Alpine Resort. Rentals are available through the Mountain Pantry grocery store (on mountain). more great adventures Disc Golf

Lizard Range Disc Golf course is located in James White Park and is an 18-hole course. It is located in a well manicured city park, and offers tight fairways, lots of OB, with a length of 4800 ft. Overall the course is not extremely long, but does require very accurate tee shots. For information on upcoming tournaments visit www.ferniediscgolf.com

Miner’s Walk

Every aspect of this exhibit is steeped in Fernie’s mining history. Comprised of six educational and interactive sites, the Miner’s Walk located on the Fernie City Hall grounds also provides a surprising optical illusion — stroll to the end of this informative path to see the face, hard hat and lamp of a miner appear in the jutting posts and circular design of the Walk.

Old Growth Trail Walk

Just a few minutes out of town, head up the road to Island Lake Lodge and follow the signs to the Old Growth Trail. Take your time on the two km walk up to the lodge to admire the scenery. Find yourself surrounded by ancient Western Red Cedar trees that are up to 800 years old and have been luckily spared from the fires and logging of nearby areas.

Kids will love to wander around Fernie’s Community EcoGarden. Located in Prentice Park, behind the Tom Uphill Memorial Home, this common green space features a native plant demonstration garden and a hummingbird/butterfly garden. www.ecogarden.ca

Demolition Derby

One of the biggest, loudest and most popular events in Fernie’s summer calendar is the Lions Club Demo Derby. The event has become a local tradition after 30 years, and young and old come out, not only to enjoy the sunshine, a cold beverage from the refreshment garden, and to witness the destruction of around 20 cars, but also to support the Lions Club in their great community work. Generally held during Labour Day weekend, find out more about this year’s event by calling 250-423-3052.

Inside the Arts Station is the Blue Toque restaurant that allows patrons to enjoy comfort food and admire the decor consisting of original art. A staple summer event from the Arts Station invites artists and viewers to quite literally think “out of the box.” Ten dumpsters are provided every summer for artists to beautify. This year, the Out Of the Box: A Dumpster Art

Project event will be held on July 5. While the decoration may vary, the transformation from dumpster to spectacular work of art is undeniable. Some dumpsters are swirled with watercolour, others are rendered with a realistic nature scene while others still are interpreted with a wild array of spray painted colours. The community can also get involved by decorating a designated community dumpster. The event is a public art initiative of the City of Fernie and facilitated by the Fernie and District Arts Council. With all that the Arts Station offers, it’s an integral part of Fernie’s artistic culture. Visit the galleries, take a class or enjoy a coffee as you experience this lively space. A b l a s t f rom th e p ast History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. F

uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only 36 buildings survived, but thankfully fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the

Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over 30 miles of forest in the Elk Valley. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. All permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity.

o learn more about Fernie’s interesting history which dates back to 1897, there is no better resource then the Fernie Museum and Information Centre. The museum is located on the corner of Second Avenue and Fifth Street, and its permanent exhibit, “This Is Our Fernie”, delves into the rich and dramatic history that shaped the town. “This Is Our Fernie” explores the legend of a curse, fires that blazed Fernie’s downtown and mining disasters that deeply affected its people. Interactive features such as Fernie’s Faces allow visitors to explore the story of Fernie through the eyes of its residents, and a timeline that documents Fernie’s evolution spans an entire wall. For summer programming, there is the Morrissey Internment Camp exhibit. The exhibit runs from May 15 until September 7 and will unearth the tales of Fernie miners

who, during World War I, put down their tools refusing to work alongside European nationals who were fighting against Canada. Turning against their own colleagues, an internment camp was established that grew so large it had to be moved out of Fernie and into the present-day ghost town that is Morrissey. This painful piece of Canada’s history and Fernie’s past illustrates the impact an international war had on the home front in the Elk Valley region. Annual summer walking tours will also be offered every weekend from July through August. Unforgettable fishing experience

H

eading down to the East Kootenay waters is just as popular a summer pastime as heading into our mountains. The diverse trout species, wide range of rivers, and beautiful mountain scenery have made Fernie a world-class destination for all kinds of fishing. For fly fishers or spin fishers, a number of different trout species can be caught here including cutthroat, rainbow, and bull trout. Whether your fishing style has you casting from the bank or in a drift boat with a guide, there are plenty of places to wet your line. Closest to home is the Elk River, which flows through Fernie and is fed by over 30 tributaries. The Elk River is well known for dry fly fishing, which is easier in the Elk as the flies that congregate here are big and easier to see, offering an excellent visual experience for the well-practiced and the novice alike. The South Country also offers many small lakes with good angling opportunities. Larger systems such as the Kootenay River and smaller rivers like the Wigwam provide even more options for everyone, from the experienced angler to the fishing freshmen. No matter what your fishing destination, be sure to get your provincial fishing license as well as a classified waters license specific to

the Kootenays. These can be purchased online at www.fishing.gov.bc.ca/ For details on fishing regulations in the area visit www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/

FISH FACTS

The Rainbow Trout is the most popular freshwater sport fish in British Columbia.

Westslope Cutthroat Trout can attain lengths of over 50 cm (19.7 in) in some of the larger, more productive rivers in the East Kootenay. Intolerant of warm water conditions, Kokanee live in cooler waters five - 30 metres below the lake surface and undergo unusual vertical migrations at dawn and dusk to feed on surface zooplankton and insects. Types of fish found in the Elk River: • Bull Trout • Kokanee • Westslope Cutthroat Trout • Largemouth Bass • Rainbow Trout • Whitefish Photo: Simon Valiquette

bear safety

R

unning into a black or grizzly bear while in Fernie can be a fairly common occurrence, they are our neighbours after all. It’s important to be bear aware at all times when you’re venturing out on the trails. Carry bear spray and know how to use it, but only rely on it as a last resort. Most humanbear encounters can be resolved without the use of bear spray, if not avoided entirely. Know your bear signs: −Scat is usually black in colour and will contain the remains of what was last eaten. Green scat is very fresh and means a bear is nearby. −Claw marks on trees or rotted stumps and logs. −Torn up rotted logs and stumps or overturned rocks (done by a bear looking for insects). −Bear tracks (bears have five toes and five claws). If you encounter a bear: −Remain calm, do not panic. −Do not run. Bears are predators (hunters) and running may cause a predatory response. If the bear hasn’t seen you: −Don’t attract the bear’s attention by making noise or yelling at it. −Look for a safe and quiet way of retreating while remaining aware of what the bear is doing. If the bear has seen you: −Stand your ground. −Make yourself as large as possible. −Speak to the bear, let it know that you are human. −Back away slowly and leave the area. Photo: Free Press files

wildlife Living in Fernie means sharing our home with many different animals. The Elk Valley is well known for its abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see elk, deer, moose, rocky mountain big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. You might even be lucky enough to come across a wolf, coyote, cougar, lynx, or bobcat. Keep an eye out when you’re hiking the trails, cooling off in the river, or when you’re just taking a leisurely stroll down Second Avenue. And summer, of course, is bear season. Black bears are spotted frequently in and around town and the Elk and Flathead Valleys have one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears. Make sure you’ve always got your camera handy, but remember to keep your distance, and don’t forget to respect the nature we’re so proud of.

Creating world-class waves in the Kootenays Wakesurfing has grown in popularity over just the last five years in the Kootenays and with it has drawn inter national media attention.

T

he sport of wakesurfing differs from its other wakeboarding or skating counterparts as riders let go of their tow ropes to ride the waves left in the wake of speeding boats. With each passing year, the lakes near Fernie have gradually filled with more water enthusiasts looking to take up the sport. A huge draw to wakesurfing is how family and socially oriented it can be. The low-impact aspect of the sport allows anyone from the age of two to tandem with an older wakesurfer or someone who is 62 to calmly enjoy the waves. The proximity of the board to the boat also allows spectators to take part in the fun without taking to the water, making wakesurfing a great activity for families and large groups. For those curious about wakesurfing, the Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge, hosted on

48 Summer 2015 - www.thefreepress.ca

beautiful Lake Koocanusa, brings spectators and competitors from all over the world to watch some of the best in wakesurfing qualify for the world championships. This year, the event will be hosted on August 21-23. More information on the challenge is available at www.rmwa.ca. In order to literally get your feet wet with the sport, Lake Koocanusa also offers the H2O School, run by world-class wakesurfer Caroline Villeneuve. The Wakeschool promises an unforgettable experience and offers single lessons or packages of up to 10 sessions. Private coaching is also available to help with equipment set up and learning tricks. Visit www.h2oschoolbc.com for more information on the Wakeschool. Another recommended spot for wakesurfing is Tie Lake just north of Jaffray, B.C.

3) Snowmobiling

Fernie is the perfect launching pad for high-powered snowmobiling adventures in the backcountry for all levels of riders.

4) Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding and Cat Skiing

1) Christmas in the mountains

There’s nothing like waking up Christmas morning to a fresh snowfall. The best Christmas in Fernie starts with the kids ripping open their presents, a warm breakfast and then some time spent outdoors playing in the snow. Whether you are building a snowman, making snow angels or gliding down the mountain on your new skis – you can’t beat Christmas in the mountains.

2) Pond Skating

Every winter when the temperature dips the local ponds freeze over and allow for outdoor skating. There’s nothing like cruising around outside on a frozen pond and feeling the wind and winter sun on rosy cheeks and noses. Some popular spots in town are Maiden Lake behind Canadian Tire and the Annex Park Pond.

58 Summer 2015 - www.thefreepress.ca

The terrain at Fernie Alpine Resort is so amazing - after years of skiing here, you will still discover new places to play. Looking for some adventure? Try cat skiing at Island Lake Lodge or with Fernie Wilderness Adventures.

5) Nordic Skiing

Fernie has an extensive network of Nordic ski trails, which continues to expand thanks to the Fernie Nordic Society. In addition to the abundance of existing trails this winter saw the opening of the newly constructed warming hut, which is visible from the Island Lake road at the entrance to the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park.

6) Snow Biking

Fat tire biking is a relatively new sport to Fernie and is increasing in popularity. With last year’s low snow pack the sport really took off. If you are interested in trying before buying, check out Gearhub in downtown Fernie and Fernie.com for all the rules and regulations.
