F

ernie in summer is a bike town. Everyone from the age of 3 to 70 has a bike of some kind, whether it’s for peddling to the shops or launching off jumps and blazing down a trail at full pelt. Getting started with mountain biking can be intimidating if you don’t know what you need. Going to a shop like GearHub is a good place to start – the experts there can help you find exactly the right bike and gear for what you want to do. At GearHub you can find one-speed townies for riding around town, serious, full suspension mountain bikes for downhill racers, and all bikes in between. Owner Mark Hall says there is no better place to mountain bike than Fernie. “I have been to lots of little towns around B.C. famous for the mountain biking, but nowhere beats Fernie. “It’s the amazing network of trails that we have here. Every year two or three more are built. Fernie Alpine Resort is great for downhill mountain biking, but we also have trails going straight from town, pretty much everywhere. “It’s part of our culture here to ride bikes. As soon as the snow has melted people can’t wait to jump on their bike, and they will keep riding it until the snow has covered everything.” Other recommended pieces of equipment are helmets, hydration packs, gloves and good eyewear. “There’s lots of stuff you need, but really, the most important thing is your bike, and then your friends so you can share the experience,” says Mark. “That’s what really makes mountain biking so fun.”

FISH like a pro We talked with local fly-fishing expert Gord Silverthorne about fishing in the Elk River. He gave us some tips for catching the big one and enjoying the season in one of the best fisheries in North America. by Megan Cole

WHY FISHING THE ELK RIVER is a unique experience People come from all over the world to fish in the streams and rivers of the East Kootenay. Diverse trout species, a wide range of rivers, and gorgeous scenery make Fernie a world class fishing destination. “The Elk River is probably the number one place in North America for those learning to fish,” said Silverthorne. It’s an easy place to learn all the basics: cast, man your fly line and to be able to get a drag free float on your fly. “The Elk is renown for the dry fly fishing,” he said. Fly-fishing is easier in the Elk River,

Silverthorne said because the flies on the Elk River are big and easier to see. “It’s a great visual experience,” he said. Silverthorne said that it’s hard to pick a favourite spot in the Elk River because there is so much great river access. “There is really good public access from Elko to Elkford,” he said. Even right in the heart of Fernie, there is great fishing close to both highway bridges, along the trail in Annex Park and on the Great Northern Trail behind Maiden Lake.

fishing tips for the Elk River:

FISH FACTS

From Discover Fishing BC

1. Do you have your licence?

The Rainbow Trout is the most popular freshwater sport fish in British Columbia.

To fish in the Elk River, Silverthorne reminds visitors that they need a British Columbia fishing licence and a classified waters licence. The daily fee for the classified waters licence for non-B.C. residents is about $22. British Columbia residents can purchase an annual classified waters licence.

2. Equipment:

Silverthorne recommends a five and six weight fly rod. He also said that it is important for people to dress for the season. Early in the season the water is still cold and those fishing in the Elk River need to keep that in mind and have good waders and boots. In August, fly fishers can do some wet wading.

3. Don’t forget about fall fishing:

Some of the best fishing is in the last two weeks of September and the first week of October, said Silverthorne. The water gets really clear and it is easy wading.

DOG DAYS of summer F

ernie loves dogs. The town has nearly as many furry friends as people and it is not surprising when you stop and take a look around. With incredible mountain trails, riverside walks and city parks on the doorstep, there is nowhere more exciting for a dog to explore. Here are 5 of our favourites.

1

BEST FOREST HIKE Old Growth Trail

This trail begins approximately 3 km up the Island Lake Lodge road and finishes at the lodge. It is an easy, mostly flat walk through a beautiful valley, taking less than an hour. Look for the stunning old growth cedar trees and the great views of the Lizard Range. Leashes are advised.

2

BEST HOT DAY WALK Fernie Provincial Park

Just outside the city, this network of trails offers shady forest, creeks and rivers, and stunning viewpoints. Most trails connect to make loops and you can go for as long or as short a walk as you want. There are lots of hills, making it great exercise for you and your dog, and lots of water for dogs to cool off in. Beware of bikers and wildlife.

3

BEST FETCH SPOT Ridgemont Trails

Beautiful, peaceful trails right from the middle of town. The area can be accessed from a trail beside the cemetery entrance. Part way up the trail, there is a great open area for playing fetch with your dog . It is best hiked early morning, as it can be hot in the summer and pretty busy with bikers.

18

www.thefreepress.ca - Summer 2011

4 BEST IN TOWN WALK Maiden Lake/Great Northern Trail

The Great Northern trail winds through mixed forest and follows the Elk River for your dog to cool off in. It is a flat town trail and easily accessed from Maiden Lake, another doggie favourite. It can also be linked with the Emily Brydon Trail that meanders beside the river and through Annex Park.

5 BEST OUT OF TOWN WALK Fairy Creek Trail

A bit more challenging than the others, this trail can go as far as 12 km if you have the energy. Otherwise, just go as far as you like and enjoy a break from the heat of summer. The trail is mostly shady with a side section leading to the river and a small waterfall. Bear sightings are common, so keep a leash at hand. The trail begins at the Information Centre just east of town.

BiKE FiTTiNG101 Maximize your riding performance this summer. Here are some common cycling complaints and how to tackle them. by Dan McDonald

BSc(Hons), PT

T

he benefits of cycling are unquestionable, for both body and mind. There is nothing quite like the feeling of having your lungs want to rip out of your chest from trying to ride up trails like Hyperventilation or Big Money. The feeling so masochistically addictive that it leaves you screaming for more punishment day after day. On the other hand, the pain you may get from your low back or knee is very different. It occupies your every thought, every agonizing peddle stroke. This pain does not leave you wanting more, it makes you question why you spent a small fortune on this instrument of torture. The action of cycling is not natural, any small change to one of the bike’s many components can have huge effects on the rider’s position. When done correctly this can greatly improve comfort and efficiency. To maximize your performance however, we need to also consider the rider’s level of flexibility and strength. Sometimes we need to not only change the rider’s position, but the rider himself through stretching and exercise. The first step is to make sure that your bike has the correct frame size. Speak to your knowledgeable local bike dealer or visit www.bikefitting.com to ensure proper frame size. Next, target problem areas with the following common cycling complaints: Photo: Jamie Hide Photography

Pain on the back of the knee, normally the inside (Hamstrings) Causes: • Saddle too high • Fixed gear bikes • Flat feet • Excessive float of pedals • Too wide stance Solutions: • Check saddle height • Reduce float • Move cleats out • Arch support • Hamstring strengthening

Lower back pain Causes: • Overly aggressive cycling position • Riding with back rounded • Tight hamstrings • Weak core muscles Solutions: • Raise handle bars • Shorten reach • Ride in neutral spine • Regular standing/ extension • Core strengthening • Low back and hamstring stretches Neck pain or top of the shoulders Causes: • Excessive reach • Overly aggressive position • Sustained neck extension Solutions: • Change to a shorter stem • Change to a stem with a higher rise • Check frame size is correct • Neck flexion and side bend stretches

BIKE FITTING 101

Front knee pain Causes: • Saddle too low • Hill climbing • Sudden increase in mileage • Pushing big gears • Wrong crank length Solutions: • Increase cadence • Check saddle height • Keep legs warm • Check crank length • Glute strengthening Pain over the outside of the hip or knee (I.T. band) Causes: • Inappropriate cleat adjustment • Saddle too high Solutions: • Rotate cleats to toe out • Widen stance • Lower saddle • Arch support • I.T. band stretches Wrist pain, pins and needles or numbness in the fingers . Causes: • No gloves • Worn out grip • Not changing hand position regularly enough • Wrists too extended • Excessive pressure through hands Solutions: • New gloves and grips • Change hand and wrist position often • Ensure the saddle is level • Increase the rise of the stem • Forearm and neck stretches
