Welcome to fabulous

Fernie

L

ast winter, I was fortunate to spend an entire week ski touring with friends at a backcountry cabin. Each day, we had a “powder pig” award, which was given to the skier who showed the greatest appreciation for skiing fresh lines that day. The winner then had to carry the “award”- a small stuffed toy pig - with them the following day. We had so much fun trying to out-do each other; skiing more laps than anyone else, setting up a booter off the outhouse roof or making powder 8’s with our partner’s tracks. If this is your first winter in Fernie, my advice to you is this: be a Powder Pig. Whenever you can, get out there and enjoy all that Fernie has to offer. Whether you are a nordic skier, a snowshoer, or a downhill skier - get yourself outside as much as possible. If you are feeling unmotivated, call a friend, get your gear together and go do something active. The winter may be long to some, but for those who love winter sports, it seems to fly by. After big days of physical adventure, strolling through downtown Fernie is even more appreciated. Food and drink taste better, shopping is fun, and small luxuries feel amazing. Laughing at your days adventures over dinner is a feeling like none other. Three Sisters Glow. Photo: Kerry Bast

This guide features a wide array of activities, adventures, events and services to enhance your stay. To learn more about what makes Fernie tick, check out our FEATURES section. The PLAYTIME section will give you tips on what to see and do. If you are searching for shopping, dining, relaxation or accommodation, Fernie’s best services are found in the SERVICES section. Also be sure to check out the CITY MAP & INDEX to facilitate your use of this guide. Get out there and enjoy. I hope you have a fun, safe winter. Oink.

Legends

of Fernie

The Griz

A

ccording to local legend, Fernie was not always blessed with an abundance of powder. It took a local man - a hero in these parts - to coax the snow out of the sky, gracing the region with an astounding annual snowfall. That man is known as the ‘Griz’. The tale of the Griz begins in 1879, when a local man claimed he saw a boy, wearing a bear coat and hat. But none of the townfolk believed the man’s tale. And the sighting was almost forgotten. Many years later, the Griz was once again spotted. Backcountry skiers, ascending the peaks of the Lizard Range near Fernie Alpine Resort, spotted the Griz lumbering through a snowstorm and wielding an eight-foot musket. No longer a boy, the witnesses said the Griz was a man of average height, but with massive shoulders, six feet wide. The skiers watched in awe, as the Griz pointed his musket to the sky and fired off a shot – prompting the light snowstorm to become heavy, filling the sky with snow. In his honour and to celebrate the snow, the people of Fernie hold a festival every spring known as “Griz Days”. The festival offers something for everyone - with sporting events, traditional competitions, parties and a parade through downtown Fernie. It’s especially fun to cheer on the locals, competing throughout the week for the coveted title of “Extreme Griz”. Join the celebrations this year from March 4 to 6. Be sure not to be caught without the traditional Griz pin!

Legendary Powder

P

eople come to Fernie from all over the world searching for one thing - legendary snow. With an average snowfall of 29 feet (875cm ) each season, they are rarely disappointed. In the middle of winter, the city has to be creative about where to put all the plowed snow, and some local businesses have a 20 cm rule, which means later openings on big snow days. H

eld at the beginning of April, this unofficial celebration, honours the early ski days of the 80’s. If you grew up watching Glen Plake define a new wave of skiing, or enjoyed watching the ski hill shenanigans of the movie, Hot Dog, then this day is for you. Started by a group of local skiers about 12 years ago, it began with 10-20 friends dressing up in 80’s ski gear and having a fun day at the ski hill. Fast forward to 2010 and hundreds of people in neon and one-piece ski suits gather in crowds. Enjoy your day doing “daffies” and “spread eagles”, then continue the fun at local bars that show the movie Hot Dog followed by DJ’s and dancing.

The Ghostrider

legends

Hot Dog Day

M

any locals attribute the unfortunate early history of Fernie, dominated by mining accidents and fires, to a curse that hangs over the valley. On Mount Hosmer’s south face, you can see the Ghostrider; a darkened shadow of a distinctive horse and rider, who some say is an angry Indian Chief and his daughter, in pursuit of William Fernie. As legend tells it, William was betrothed to an Indian Princess in order to learn the source of her coal bead necklace. After learning the location of the Morrissey Coal Seams, he left the Princess. In revenge, the tribe’s medicine women placed a curse on the entire Elk Valley. Although discounted by many, the misfortune of the region is often reason enough to believe. So in 1964, steps were taken to undo the curse. Members of the Kutenai Tribes assembled in Fernie and performed a curse lifting ceremony, smoking a pipe of peace with local politicians. The ceremony may have undone the curse, but the Ghostrider continues to appear – perhaps still in pursuit of its prey, William Fernie.

Emily Brydon

E

mily Brydon, former member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team is a Fernie living legend. Born in Fernie in 1980, she went on to become a nine time World Cup medalist, a World Cup Winner, and a three time Olympian. As if that wasn’t enough, in 2006 she established The Emily Brydon Youth Foundation. Its goal is “to provide financial assistance to youth in the Elk Valley, who do not otherwise have the financial means, in pursuing sports, the arts, education or other positive pursuits”. Continuing her desire to give back to her community and the world, Brydon and fellow teammates launched the Right To Play initiative in 2007. The partnership initiative raises awareness and fundraising within the international and national ski community for development and peace projects across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Ski Trails Fernie golf Course

Island Lake Lodge

FAR

Maintained by the Fernie Nordic Society, the trails at the Fernie Golf Course are set for both classic and skate skiing. The majority of the eight kilometres of trail are flat and therefore are suitable for both beginner and intermediate skiers. Located right in town, it is easily accessed and can take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on which loops you choose. To learn more, or to become a member of the Fernie Nordic Society, visit www.fernienordic.com.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the road up to Island Lake Lodge offers a 12 kilometre climb up to the resort. Winding through old growth forest, the cat track offers gorgeous mountain views and several strenuous hill climbs. Once at the Lodge, there are additional trails around the lake. If you’d rather start your ski at the resort, they offer Winter Escape packages which include a return snowcat ride to the lodge, guided adventures, as well as a gourmet lunch. Reservations are a must, 250-423-3700.

Fernie Alpine Resort offers over 10 kilometres of groomed trails for both skate and classic skiing. Overall the trails are suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers, however beginners will certainly enjoy the trail if they don’t mind walking up a steep climb now and again. These trails are consistently groomed well, and provide several loop opportunities with glimpses of the valley below. Rentals are available at the The Quest, at Snow Creek Lodge on the skihill, 250-423-9252.

Prepare To L ❆VE Winter Here are some tips to make sure you return home safely from your outdoor adventures.

• BE EQUIPPED

Check local snow and weather conditions at Canadian Avalanche Centre (www. avalanche.ca) and plan your route before you head out. If you need any local knowledge, ask at the information centres or in any local outdoors stores.

If you are heading into the backcountry, Fernie Search and Rescue suggest the following essential items for your backpack – and make sure you and your companions know how to use them. Transceiver, good quality shovel, probe, map, navigation equipment – GPS and compass in case the batteries fail, extra clothing and food and drink, a first aid pack, means of lighting a fire, basic tools, communications equipment.

• TELL SOMEONE

• DON’T PANIC

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to get back. Take a cell phone, or if you’re going deep into the backcountry, a GPS transmitter (SPOT) device so you can communicate in an emergency.

For further information about travelling in avalanche terrain, visit www.avalanche.ca

• BE PREPARED

Being lost is not dangerous if you are prepared. If you become lost remember S.T.O.P – sit, think, observe, plan.

ow do you train an avalanche rescue dog to seek out buried avalanche victims? has a new puppy to train – a black Labrador named Neko and – from the age of 12 weeks – he is starting to get him thinking like a rescue dog. “I play hide and seek with him. I play with him and get him all excited with a rag reward, then someone holds him and I run away. For the first few times he sees where I go, but I then I hide behind a rock or a tree and play tug of war with him when he finds me.” Gradually the game will be built up to have Neko finding a wool sweater that someone has slept with for a few days so it has human scent on it. As the dogs’ noses get more focused on this scent, the sweater will be buried in the snow up to 70 cm deep, and left there overnight to prevent them following any tracks to it. Dogs and handlers from all over British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon and the United States will be at Fernie Alpine Resort January 9-14, 2011 for the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) winter assessments. Some of the exercises will take place near the base area – visit www.skifernie.com for more information.

• Steve Morrison & Mojo • Kirk Gutzman & Lily • Forest Latimer & Tarn Fernie team members are always on standby with ski patrol. They also work with Fernie and District Search and Rescue, the RCMP and Emergency Management BC.

INjURY

FREE

With the winter season spanning roughly four months, the last thing anyone needs is an injury cutting into their valuable ski and boarding time. by Dan McDonald

Y

ou’ve spent all year saving for your lift pass, carefully read every review to find the perfect pair of skis or board, but what about you? Are you ready to go from your 9-5 office job to 100+ days on the hill? So stop drooling over those new bad boys in the corner of the room, stop looking at the weather network every hour to see if the forecast has changed and get ready‌ really ready for hitting that pow! Traumatic injury rates at ski hills have been on the decline over the past 40 years. Releasable bindings, braking devices and parabolic skis are largely responsible for the reduction in traumatic injury rates amongst skiers, especially in lower limbs. Grooming, signage and terrain management are also thought to have played a large role too. Injuries can be traumatic or overuse in nature and there are things we can all do to minimize both and at the same time improve our technique and performance. In pre participation screening, physiotherapists look for predisposing factors that have been associated with certain types of injuries. Sweet tricks at Island Lake. Photo: Mike McPhee

30

www.thefreepress.ca - Winter 2010/2011

It is important to know what these factors are so that they may be eliminated or minimized ideally in the off season. Common risk factors are:

1. Reduced mobility. Reduced mobility may refer to a reduction in joint range of motion or reduced muscle length. If you do not have the necessary mobility for that activity then adverse stress is being applied to that area of the body, for example achilles pain and tight calf muscles in runners.

2. Reduced strength. When there is a lack of strength around a joint then adverse stress will be placed on the surrounding structures, for example, glute weakness will cause adverse stress to be placed on the hip joint and lumbar spine, thus putting a person at risk of developing an overuse injury.

3. Poor motor control. Motor control refers to our hard wiring which allows us to perform coordinated movements. Uncoordinated movements also cause unwanted stress on the body. So how do you know if you are setting yourself up for an injury?

injury free

Try this simple test to see if you can flag any early problems: Single leg 1/3 squats In front of a mirror, balance on one leg and squat 1/3 of the way down 30 times in a row. Firstly can you perform this 30 times pain free? Secondly, how do you move? Are your shoulders level? Does your pelvis stay level? Does it rotate? Does your knee move towards the midline? Is there a difference from left to right? These are all indications that one or a combination of the three main risk factors described on the previous page may be present. The information above will give you an idea of what you may want to improve but if you would like to know more or have an injury you think needs to be assessed, book in to see a registered Physiotherapist who can help you stay injury free and get more out of your winter season!

If you're new to Canada, you may have trouble understanding the locals. Here's a guide to get you speaking the lingo. Canuck: A slang term for “Canadian” in the U.S. and Canada. Most common in winter and spring, a chinook wind can result in a rise in temperature of 20 C° in a quarter of an hour. Cow town: A nickname for Calgary, Alberta. Refers to its roots as a hub of ranching, livestock trade and the Calgary Stampede or rodeo culture. deke: A word derived from decoy and used to describe a fake intended to deceive a defensive player, often drawing that player out of position, usually in hockey, as in “I deked him out and scored.” d o u b l e double: a cup of coffee from Tim Horton’s with two creams and two sugars. eh: a spoken interjection to ascertain the comprehension, continued interest, agreement, etc., of the person or persons addressed (“That was a good game last night, eh?”). forty pounder: a 40 oz. bottle of alcohol. hoodie: a hooded sweatshirt with or without a zipper that has a pocket in the front. Also referred to as a Bunny Hug in Saskatchewan. Kokanee: British Columbian name for a species of land-locked salmon (accent on first syllable). Originated in Quebec but is now popular across Canada. RCs: RCMP officers, especially patrolling the highway. Sasquatch: A legendary c r e a t u r e similar to Bigfoot or Yeti. Popularized by the Kokanee Brewery as the thief of Kokanee beer. Snowbirds: a reference to people, often senior citizens, who leave Canada during the winter months to reside in southern states of the U.S. (particularly Florida.) Also the name of the Canadian Forces aerobatics team. Tim’s, Timmy’s, Timmy Ho’s: Tim Hortons doughnut chain. toonie: Canadian two dollar coin. Modelled after loonie. toque: a close-fitting woolen winter hat (sometimes spelled tuque, or touque). TIME MACHINE

L

ast March Fernie appeared on the silver screen as the setting for the John Cusack movie Hot Tub Time Machine. The retro ski movie, which also stars Chevy Chase and Crispin Glover, was filmed on location in downtown Fernie and at Fernie Alpine Resort April 2009. In the movie, Cusack and his friends decide to escape their mid-life crises by returning to the ski resort they partied at in their twenties, in search of their “mojo.” Little do they realize the hot tub in their lodge is a time machine that sends them back to 1986 in all its day-glo glory. It is full of cheesy 80s music, fluorescent outfits, big hair and skinny skis – as well as shots of Fernie’s beautiful mountains. Look carefully past Cusack’s left shoulder and you may recognize someone from your favourite Fernie bar, store or ski lift. Over 200 locals became extras for two weeks, strolling along Second Avenue during the filming of Winterfest 1986 or chilling with Cusack in the ski hill snack bar scenes. Even the extras who only appeared on screen for a brief second were given full wardrobe, hair and makeup at the beginning of every day of filming at temporary studios set up in the Corner Pocket restaurant at Fernie Alpine Resort.
