WELCOME to Fernie T

he popular saying around Fernie is that people come for the winter and stay for the summer! It doesn’t take long for our famous snow to melt, and before you know it people are pedaling their bikes around town in shorts and sunglasses. With so many amazing activities just outside your door, the only problem you might have is choosing which part of Fernie you want to explore each day. The sun is almost always shining in our little mountain town, so pack the sunscreen and a hat, and head outside to experience the great outdoors. Enjoy a long hike, a round of golf, a bike ride, or a cold drink on one of the many restaurant patios. Head up to Fernie Alpine Resort for mountain biking, ziplining, or a walk in the trees in the aerial park. With the Elk River passing through Fernie, why not spend a sunny afternoon enjoying its cool and clear waters? Arguably the best dry fly fishing in B.C., book yourself in for a tour and have a guide show you the basics and best spots. Or, if you’re a seasoned pro, throw your waders on and head on in, the water’s fine! Adrenaline junkies can get their fix with whitewater rafting and kayaking, or for those who prefer to go at a slower pace, take a leisurely float down the river and take in the spectacular views. For relaxed family fun, pack a picnic and head to peaceful Annex Park, or find your way to our historic downtown and check out the shops and restaurants. Still looking for activities? Visit one of the nearby lakes, find a different viewpoint during a horseback adventure, or take a stroll along one of our many trails. Discover Fernie this summer. The possibilities are endless and the days are long, sunny, and warm! Photo: Steve Lipinski

Cast off in Fernie’s Elk River Kevin Green is a fishing guide in Fer nie. Full of life and always smiling, he is one of the most enthusiastic guides you will ever meet.

K

evin’s eagerness for guests to become better fisherman and his knowledge of the local fishery ensures a day full of bent rods and happy clients. He will show you where the fish live and might even get more excited than you do with your catch. His love for fishing finds him travelling to northern B.C. where he also guides for fall steelhead. From Quebec originally, Kevin moved out to Fernie in 1997 to ski powder and never left. His love of fishing began when he was just three years old, on a family picnic. “We were on an island on a great big lake in Quebec,” he said. “My dad sat me down on a dock with a fishing pole attached to a bobber and a worm. “I’m not sure how long I sat there but at some point my rod was bent in half and I almost got

8

pulled into the water by an amazing fish! “What had happened is a sunfish had eaten the worm, which I hadn’t noticed, and then a five lb. largemouth bass ate the sunfish! There was a great commotion and my father ran over to help me out. Ever since that moment I have been literally obsessed with fishing.” Kevin then got into throwing artificial lures, and soon after that, at age 16, he picked up his first fly rod and never looked back. He finds it hard to explain what he loves so much about fishing. “Think of Billabong’s slogan; only a surfer knows the feeling,’” he said. “Well, the same could be said for those who are really into fly fishing. It’s about a lot more than just reeling in a fish.” He said part of the pleasure comes from just being outside in a beautiful place, standing in

you both will decide on where to float out of six available options. For the next eight or more hours you will drift down the cool shimmering river, fishing practically every single piece of good water possible, and getting plenty of tips and advice from Kevin.

the river. Then there is the skill of being able to “read the water,” which only comes from years of experience. He says he has so many years of practice doing this he can now tell exactly where the fish will be. “You pay careful attention to what insects are flying around or to the insect larvae on the submerged river rocks,” he said. “These observations will influence you to pick the right fly from the box, which you carefully tie on to the end of your line. “You deliver your cast to the most likely lie, and as you focus on the drift of your fly, on the emerald water, a beautiful copper and orange coloured fish swims up and eats it. “Fly fishing is a complex game that can be as challenging as you make it, it’s different every day out there and that makes it interesting.” Fernie is famous for its dry fly fishing and large, wild Westlope Cuthroat. Fernie also has some of the best Bull trout angling anywhere, with fish growing as large as 15 lbs. or more, although typically large ones are more in the neighbourhood of eight to 12 lbs. Apart from the incredible types of fish that thrive here there is also the incredible beauty of the area and of the Elk River, that draws in keen anglers from all over the world. A day out with Kevin starts at 9 am and then Photos: Submitted

FISH FACTS From Discover Fishing BC The Rainbow Trout is the most popular freshwater sport fish in British Columbia.

Westslope Cutthroat Trout can attain lengths of over

50 cm (19.7 in) in some of the larger, more productive rivers in the East Kootenay.

Intolerant of warm water conditions, live in cooler waters five - 30 metres below the lake surface and undergo unusual vertical migrations at dawn and dusk to feed on surface zooplankton and insects.

Trail Picks

Here are Fer nie Bike Guide’s recommendations for beginner, intermediate, expert and downhill/freeride trails. Support the Fer nie Trails Alliance by buying one of their maps to guide you. Beginner/ Mixed Abilities Groups

1 The Coal Creek Heritage Trail is an out-

and-back ride that follows an old rail bed to a former town and mine site. Start at the Fernie Aquatic Centre Trail Hub. As you ride, watch for interpretative signs that tell the story of the people and places of Coal Creek.

2 Or, play in the Ridgemont trail system.

Start up “Cemetery Bypass” to “What’s Up Doc”. Continue up a little further to “Queen V” and link up with “Eco Terrorist”. Enjoy the smooth downhill of “Sidewinder” and loop back through town for a post-ride refreshment of your choosing.

Intermediate

prize – the descent. This down is so long it has sections for everyone including steeps, a rock garden with various options for a new line every time, and a jumpy section to finish it off.

6

Another classic Fernie ride is “Lower Up Rooted” to “Up Rooted” up to “Hyper Ventilation”. Pause and breathe. Then, smile and point your bike down “Hyper Extension”.

Downhill/Freeride

7

Drive out Cokato Road and shuttle up the fire access road to three steep trails: “Three Kings”, “Dopamine” and “48 hours”. Be advised all three have drops and jumps, with various levels of ride-arounds.

3

A quick ride west of town will bring you to the Fernie Provincial Park. Head up “Stove”, continue up “Mushroom Head”. Your reward after this steady climb is the fun downhill flow of “Red Sonya”. See how fast you can complete this loop!

Another good option is east of town towards Mount Proctor. “Swine Flu” is a long continual climb with sections that will challenge any rider. Take a break at the top and enjoy the view from a Fernie Trails Alliancesupplied bench. Then, hop back on your bike and cruise down a mix of open stretches and switchback turns. For bonus points head back up for a loop of “Far Side”.

ying in the shadows, a legend waits for the afternoon sun. On a summer evening, out of Mt. Hosmer’s face, comes the Ghostrider – the shadow of a distinctive horse and rider, the ghost some say of an angry Indian Chief and his jilted daughter pursuing William Fernie. As legend has it, William Fernie was courting an Indian Princess to learn the source of her sacred black stone necklace. After learning the secret location of the Morrissey Coal Seams, Fernie stopped seeing the Princess and the tribe’s medicine woman placed a curse on the Elk Valley. Residents of Fernie feared the curse was real after several tragedies struck the town. Fire reduced the town to smouldering rubble in 1904 and again in 1908. In 1916, the Elk River flooded and in 1917, there was a mining disaster. Finally, a public ceremony in 1964 officially lifted the curse. Members of the Kootenay Tribes assembled in Fernie and Chief Red Eagle and Fernie Mayor James White smoked a pipe of peace. Although it has now been 40 years since

the curse was lifted, on summer evenings, the ghost of an angry Indian chief and his jilted daughter still rides above Fernie and their legend lives on in the shadows of the mountain.

Old Growth Trail:

Just a few minutes out of town, head up the road to Island Lake Lodge and follow the signs to the Old Growth Trail. Take your time on the two km walk up to the lodge to admire the scenery. Find yourself surrounded by ancient Western Red Cedar trees that are up to 800 years old and have been luckily spared from the fires and logging of nearby areas.

Ancient Cottonwood Trail:

About 12 kilometres west of Fernie in Morrissey is the Ancient Cottonwood Trail. The short and easy walk through the forest shows off an old-growth Western Red Cedar Forest, with 400 year old black Cottonwood trees. Towering as high as a 10 story building, these trees provide homes for many species, including dens for black bears, nests for the endangered Western Screech-Owl, and habitats for many other songbirds and insects.

bear safety

R

unning into a black or grizzly bear while in Fernie can be a fairly common occurrence, they are our neighbours after all. It’s important to be bear aware at all times when you’re venturing out on the trails. Carry bear spray and know how to use it, but only rely on it as a last resort. Most humanbear encounters can be resolved without the use of bear spray, if not avoided entirely. Know your bear signs: −Scat is usually black in colour and will contain the remains of what was last eaten. Green scat is very fresh and means a bear is nearby. −Claw marks on trees or rotted stumps and logs. −Torn up rotted logs and stumps or overturned rocks (done by a bear looking for insects). −Bear tracks (bears have five toes and five claws). If you encounter a bear: −Remain calm, do not panic. −Do not run. Bears are predators (hunters) and running may cause a predatory response. If the bear hasn’t seen you: −Don’t attract the bear’s attention by making noise or yelling at it. −Look for a safe and quiet way of retreating while remaining aware of what the bear is doing. If the bear has seen you: −Stand your ground. −Make yourself as large as possible. −Speak to the bear, let it know that you are human. −Back away slowly and leave the area. Photo: Jenna Jensen

wildlife Living in Fernie means sharing our home with many different animals. The Elk Valley is well known for its abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see elk, deer, moose, rocky mountain big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. You might even be lucky enough to come across a wolf, coyote, cougar, lynx, or bobcat. Keep an eye out when you’re hiking the trails, cooling off in the river, or when you’re just taking a leisurely stroll down Second Avenue. And summer, of course, is bear season. Black bears are spotted frequently in and around town and the Elk and Flathead Valleys have one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears. Make sure you’ve always got your camera handy, but remember to keep your distance, and don’t forget to respect the nature we’re so proud of.

water adventures F er n ie an d s u r rou n d ing a re a Water, water, everywhere! Fer nie has lots of options for those who want to cool off. From the small, but perfectly formed Maiden Lake right in the middle of Fer nie, to the huge expanse at Lake Koocanusa, an hour’s drive away, and everything in between, you can find your own little summer oasis.

Adventurous souls can brave a whitewater rafting trip on the Bull or Elk River, grab a kayak and battle upstream, or launch off a cliff into the icy water below at Silver Springs. Those who prefer to take things slower can join a float trip, blow up their inflatable and float down the river, take the dog for a paddle at Maiden Lake, enjoy the stunning scenery at Island Lake Lodge or let the kids cool off at the splash park or pool at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

Scenic floats

Mountain High Adventures runs scenic floats for those who prefer to take things easy, or those who can’t swim. These trips are a great way to enjoy a sunny day and take in the beautiful surroundings. Contact Mountain High Adventures at 250-423-5008.

Houseboating

Houseboating is great for families or groups of friends who want to spend every second of their vacation on the water. Houseboats are fully equipped with everything you need, so you can float wherever you want, and bring your accommodation with you! Sunshine houseboats at Lake Koocanusa offers boats of

different sizes, that sleep from four to 22 people. Lake Koocanusa has over 400 km of accessible shoreline including sandy beaches and secluded coves. Three to seven day packages are available.

The cool, clean Elk River passes right through Fernie, so why not go paddling on a hot day? For those who want to try something a little more heart thumping, you can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle upstream, or contact a local operator that offers a guided day of kayaking. Mountain High River Adventures offers inflatable kayaks and half or full day trips with a fully qualified rafting guide, call 250423-5008. Or the GearHub has whitewater kayaks for rent, call 250-423-5555. Check out www.paddlefernie.com for detailed river information.

Wakesurfing and wakeboarding

The H2O School at Lake Koocanusa is the first stop for anyone wanting to try wakesurfing and wakeboarding. The school offers day camps as well as overnight camps that include accommodation on a houseboat! The camps focus on wakesurfing, but wakeboarding and wakeskating classes are available on request. Wakeboarding involves riding a wakeboard over the water while being towed behind a boat. With wakesurfing, the rider lets go of the rope and then surfs the wave created by the boat. With wakeskating, the rider is towed, but is not attached to the board, making it more like surfing.

Swimming/Tubing

Shoot the Rapids Mountain High Adventures runs white knuckle rafting adventures down the Elk and Bull Rivers. The trips are tailored to suit the guests, and there is a guide in each raft who will give you a ride as relaxing or as heart racing as you choose! Adrenaline junkies should choose early season for higher water and class 4 rapids. Don’t forget to take in the amazing scenery as you drift past ancient cottonwood trees and birds of prey fishing for their lunch. Your rafting trip will take all day and lunch is provided. The Elk River and lakes around Fernie offer many places to swim and tube. Take the kids for a dip or relax on a beach towel at Fernie’s man-made Maiden Lake behind Extra Foods. Visit Island Lake and experience the beauty of a true wilderness lake. For the more adventurous water seekers float on the Elk River between the Fernie bridges all the way to Fernie Alpine Resort on tubes or small rafts and manage Fernie’s class one rapids in a two to four hour adventure. A bl a st f rom th e past History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only 36 buildings survived, but thankfully fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the

Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over 30 miles of forest in the Elk Valley. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. All permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity. things worth checking out So meth in g a b it d iffe re n t Fer nie is famous for golf, mountain biking, fishing and hiking, but there is so much more to enjoy here in summer! Did you know there is horseback riding and rock climbing not far from our doorsteps? Break your own trail this summer, and discover a new kind of adventure.

Ziplining

Check out Fernie Alpine Resort from 20 metres above the ground with a zipline and aerial playground. As well as soaring over the treetops on the zipline, try everything from traversing through tree bridges, rope climbing walls and ladders in the trees, to mid-air jumps and high wire acts. Children are allowed as long as they are over seven and at least 4’7” tall. Book online at www.skifernie.com or by phone at 250-423-4655 or 1-800-258-7669.

Rock climbing

While Fernie is not a rock climbing destination itself, you don't have to travel too far to get a taste of it. Locals who want to scale a cliff head down to Montana's Stone Hill, just across the US border. It was actually a group of Fernie locals who first climbed at Stone Hill in the 70s, and they continue to develop lines there. Another nearby option is Lakit Lake near Cranbrook. For those wanting to give their kids a taste of climbing, take them to the indoor rock walls in Evolution Gym or at the College of the Rockies to learn the basics.

Helicopter tours

To get views of the Rockies that will take your breath away, treat someone special to a helicopter tour in the mountains surrounding Fernie. Ascent Helicopters offer tours that take off from Fernie and have you soaring over the Lizard Range, Three Sisters and Elk River Valley. For more information, call 250-423-1443. Photo: Matt Kuhn

ollowing three years of rocking and rolling, Wapiti is celebrating its fourth anniversary this summer. Fernie’s very own music festival is back. On Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9, the Annex Park will be transformed for two days into a live music venue, showcasing the best in fresh, new, Canadian indie music. Our little festival in the park, on the banks of the Elk River, and at the foot of Mount Fernie, is made for people who love music and the great outdoors. Another word for Elk, Wapiti seems a fitting name for a home-grown festival created by, and for, the Elk Valley community. The

festival kicks off Friday evening and the fun will continue all day Saturday and into the night. With a diverse lineup of bands playing almost every genre you can imagine, there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. Wapiti is family friendly, so feel free to bring the kids along, and don’t forget your sunscreen, blankets, and lawn chairs. Join us in Fernie this summer for Wapiti. Rock out beside your best buds, dance with your neighbours, and make some new friends! It’s all about celebrating Canadian music with the humble folks of the Elk Valley. Demo Derby One of the biggest, loudest and most popular events in Fernie’s summer calendar is the Lions Club Demo Derby. The event has become a local tradition after 30 years, and young and old come out, not only to enjoy the sunshine, a cold beverage from the refreshment garden, and to witness the destruction of around 20 cars, but also to support the Lions Club in their great community work. Generally held during Labour Day weekend, find out more about this year’s event by calling 250-423-3052.

top by the Miners’ Walk outdoor exhibit while visiting Fernie, and learn all about the history of mining in the Elk Valley. The Miners’ Walk is located right outside City Hall, and is a great chance for tourists to find out a little bit about the coal mining story in the Elk Valley. The highlight of the exhibition is a large sculpture created by internationally known artist Jeff de Boer. The sculpture consists of individual shapes set on pedestals. As the visitor walks around the exhibition, the shapes appear to be random, but then when the visitor reaches the right spot, they come together to reveal a larger than life miner’s face. As well as the sculpture, there are colourful signs and information on the importance and history of coal mining in the valley. “The Miners’ Walk tells the whole story of

the importance of mining and the powerful effect it has had in shaping what Fernie is today,” said Miners’ Walk committee member Mayor Mary Giuliano. “This was done by creating an outdoor exhibit that is compelling, enduring and attractive. From this, people will gain a respect for what happened in the past, is happening now and will be part of creating a positive future.” The Miners’ Walk is situated on the City Hall property, the original coal company office in the heart of Fernie’s community. “The exhibit tells the story of significant players in coal mining in the area, and describes the geology and natural and human history of the Fernie area as it relates to coal mining,” said Giuliano. “If it wasn’t for mining, Fernie wouldn’t be here.” Summer 2014 - www.thefreepress.ca

fer nie parks

F

ernie boasts a variety of parks with plenty room for kids to play and dogs to explore, as well as some fun and educational features.

Rotary Park

Rotary Park, located just off of Highway 3, is the multi-function park of Fernie; it features play structures for kids, grass areas, picnic sites, seating areas and a gazebo. On Sundays in the summer it is home to the Fernie Mountain Market. www.mountainmarket.ca

Ridgemont Park

Ridgemont Park, located on Ridgemont Lane, offers play structures for children, a large field for activities and a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

10th Avenue Park

10th Avenue Park, located, not surprisingly, on 10th Avenue, is the Annex neighbourhood’s top park and features a play structure for children as well as a large grass area for picnics and relaxing.

Dogwood Park

Dogwood Park is located along the Elk River at First Street and Fourth Avenue. Dogwood Park encompasses the area from the West Fernie Bridge (Highway 3 crossing) straight through

to Coal Creek and includes picnic areas, picturesque views of the Lizard Range and the Leroux Pond (home to ducks, turtles, frogs and more).

Annex Park

The Annex Park is located at 10th Street and 12th Avenue. The Annex Park is a quiet setting featuring picnic areas, horseshoe pits under a canopy of trees and a large grass field and duck pond. Each summer Wapiti Music Festival is held here.

Prentice Park

Prentice Park is located by the Fernie Hospital on Fifth Avenue and 15th Street and boasts two slo-pitch fields, a soccer field, a running track and a concession area.

James White Park

James White Park is located on Mt. Proctor Avenue in the Airport subdivision. James White Park is situated alongside the Elk River and provides a beautiful forested area featuring towering pines, mountain views and a host of amenities including tennis courts, horseshoe pits, bocci ball courts, a slo-pitch field, a minor ball field and the Lizard Range Disc Golf Course.

km south of Fernie on Highway 3. Mount Fernie Provincial Park is a small park with a big personality. Black bear, deer, and elk are commonly seen in this area. Situated in the southern portion of the Kootenay Range, it is a 259 hectare park shadowed by the 2,133 metre high Mount Fernie. The park protects the drainage area of Lizard Creek which flows through the park before forming a beautiful waterfall and emptying into the Elk River.

Skateboard & BMX Park

The outdoor skateboard and BMX park is located on Pine Avenue and Ridgemont Drive. The outdoor park features several bowls and obstacles including a tight snake run with two bowls (The Death Skillet and The Wok), a six foot half pipe, an eight foot quarter pipe, tight and mellow banks, fun boxes, and rails. The best thing is you can keep riding after it’s dark because the park has lights. One of the best locations in Fernie for keeping the kids entertained! For more information visit www.fernie.ca.

Dirt Jump Park

The Dirt Jump Park is located adjacent to the Fernie Aquatic Centre and the skateboard park. It is a great place to hang out and work on

BMX and mountain bike skills, while hanging out with local youth and families. For more information visit www.bikefernie.ca.

Tennis

Two outdoor courts are available at Fernie Alpine Resort. Hourly court rental is $11. Rentals are available through the Mountain Pantry grocery store (on mountain). Tennis season passes are available for $55/ person or $99/family. Tennis lessons are also available by a certified instructor. To book, contact or visit Resort Guest Services. The City of Fernie oversees four tennis courts located in James White Park. These courts are free for public use. Fernie has a Tennis Club that offers social play, lessons, tournaments and camps. Adult club night is Monday from 6 to 10 pm and Junior club session is Tuesday from 4 to 6 pm. Lessons can be arranged privately.

Kids Water Splash Park

The splash park located outside the Fernie Aquatic Centre opened last year and is the perfect place for little ones to cool off in the heat of summer. The park is open every day from around 8 am to dusk.

DOG DAYS

of summer

F

ernie loves dogs. The town has nearly as many furry friends as people and it’s not surprising when you stop and take a look around. With incredible mountain trails, riverside walks and city parks on the doorstep, there is nowhere more exciting for a dog to explore. Here are five of our favourites.

1

BEST FOREST HIKE Old Growth Trail

This trail begins approximately 3 kms up the Island Lake Lodge road and finishes at the lodge. It is an easy, mostly flat, walk through a beautiful valley, taking less than an hour. Look for the stunning old growth cedar trees and the great views of the Lizard Range. Leashes are advised.

2

BEST HOT DAY WALK Fernie Provincial Park

Just outside the city, this network of trails offers shady forest, creeks and rivers, and stunning viewpoints. Most trails connect to make loops and you can go for as long or as short a walk as you want. There are lots of hills, making it great exercise for you and your dog with lots of water for dogs to cool off in. Beware of bikers and wildlife.

3

BEST FETCH SPOT Ridgemont Trails

Beautiful, peaceful trails right from the middle of town. The area can be accessed from a trail beside the cemetery entrance. Part way up the trail there is a great open area for playing fetch with your dog . It is best hiked early morning

50 Summer 2014 - www.thefreepress.ca

as it can be hot in the summer and pretty busy with bikers.

4

BEST IN TOWN WALK Maiden Lake/Great Northern Trail

The Great Northern trail winds through mixed forest and follows the Elk River for your dog to cool off in. It is a flat town trail and easily accessed from Maiden Lake, another doggie favourite. It can also be linked with the Emily Brydon Trail that meanders beside the river and through the Annex Park.

5

BEST OUT OF TOWN WALK Fairy Creek Trail

A bit more challenging than the others, this trail can go as far as 12 km if you have the energy. Otherwise, just go as far as you like and enjoy a break from the heat of summer. The trail is mostly shady with a side section leading to the river and a small waterfall. Bear sightings are common so keep a leash at hand. The trail begins at the Information Centre just east of town.
