Mountain biking – the transportation of choice In the past decade, Fer nie has transformed into a mountain biking Mecca, providing optimal trail systems for world-class riding.

F

rom a family fun ride down wide double track to the beautiful downhill trails at Fernie Alpine Resort, we have you covered. Because Fernie is a town that thrives on two wheels, there are multiple services available around town to provide the ultimate mountain biking experience.

Stuffed summer schedule

From regular events with the Fernie Mountain Bike Club (FMBC) like the 2Knee Rides, to Fernie’s three-day mountain bike stage race – the Fernie 3, the avid cyclist has more than enough events to fill their summer schedule.

The Guide’s Hut Staff: Trail Favourites

hoosing a favourite trail in Fernie can be hard. All of Fernie’s trails have something to offer for different times of day, moods, and weather. Nailing it down to our favourite rides has been a bit like getting blood out of a stone, but we’ve settled on three.

Dana –

Swine Flu is quickly accessible from town, which makes it an easy choice. The climb is a fun challenge, rising steadily with a relentless surge near the top. This combined with the descent make it in our opinion the most bang for your buck. What to expect from the descent? You’ll have flowing banked corners around trees to bermed sections into tight switchbacks. Not only do you get to ride a sweet trail, the views of town from the bench are breathtaking.

Lucia –

Take Uprooted to Hypervent. Turn off to Castle Rocks and enjoy the view. Descend Southern Comfort to South Castle down to Cokato Road. Then take the new addition back on to the Montane Trail. It will take you back to where you started. This ride is an awesome Fernie epic, made more awesome for me personally as it is where I got engaged. He brought wine and wine glasses to the top!

The climb, particularly nice in mid-summer, is interesting and warms you up through raspberry-filled sunny glades before you hit the exciting and challenging switchbacks of Hypervent. The last section up to Castle Rock makes you feel like a fitness champ. Hike the last metres for an outstanding view of the Lizard Range. The descent (especially when giddy with wine and newly-engaged) is fast and makes for obligatory Braaap Braap noises! As you connect onto South Castle towards the bottom you get some awesome technical sections before hitting Cokato. Then it is up to you if you want to cruise into town for the first beer or more wine or continue back over to Montane.

Geoff –

Project 9 is my choice because you can pick different lines each time, giving it a freeride feel. The up is quick and dirty; the down is plenty flirty!

Trail etiquette tips

Proper trail manners is key to having a healthy riding community, here are three: • Let others know you’re there! Making noise lets other riders know you are in their area. This is key on trails with blind corners and when trail visibility is low. It also lets animals know where you are and can keep them off the trail. • Ride safe As enticing as it is to jump from berm to berm, if you do not have the proper equipment, know the trail, or its conditions, ride within your riding limit and expect the unexpected. • Right of way It is important to follow the common courtesy of climbing, yield to riders who are ascending (riders who are climbing or going up the hill) they are using much more effort than someone who is going down the hill. Slow down to let them pass or if it is tight singletrack, stop and let them continue climbing the hill.

POWERING FERNIE’S TRAILS

The TransCanada Trail – a multi-use trail for everyone Fer nie is a splendid stop on the TransCanada Trail (TCT). The 7.8 km section of trail that goes through Fer nie runs parallel to the powerful and picturesque Elk River.

F

ernie’s TCT Pavilion is on the River Dyke Trail, just north of the Highway 3 bridge that goes over the Elk River in Fernie’s west end. The Fernie section of the route has many amenities that TCT users search for including grocery stores, camping, washrooms, parking and an alternate trail.

Alternate TCT Trail – Old Stumpy Trail

This alternate is most useful to travel to or from the Coal Discovery Trail. This trail is suitable for mountain bikes as well as hikers. As with the majority of the TCT, weather can affect the trail conditions, the more northern portion of this route can be very challenging for loaded bikes,

these users may want to use the highway as an alternative. The Trail started in 1992 and stretches from the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans together by covering more than 18,000 kilometers (as of Feb. 2016). When the trail is connected it will bridge 24,000 kilometers of trail together. The trail is expected to be completed in its entirety by its 25th anniversary and Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. The system is made up of more than 400 community trails, managed by local groups, conservation authorities and different levels of government. Many sections of the Trail are repurposed railway lines donated by CP and CN.

Singletrack stage racing – mountain biking at its finest While Fer nie is home to many mountain bike events, the Fer nie 3 and Singletrack 6 are arguably it’s crowning jewels.

T

hese multi-day stage races bring riders from across the globe to ride some of Fernie’s best mountain biking trails.

Fernie 3 3 day: July 1-3 1 day: July 1

This three-day stage race is focused on fun and features Fernie’s fantastic singletrack and legendary hospitality. Unlike many other stage races, the Fernie 3 does not require driving or shuttling from location to location, it’s all right here. While stage distances average around 32 km per day it’s no slouch, with challenging climbs and swift single-track, riders are bound to be brimming with excitement before and after each stage. The 2016 race will also include timed descents with stage and overall winners for each day’s downhill section. The event also offers a one-day category for easier commitment while still giving riders a taste of Fernie singletrack. This fully supported event has everything from great winnable swag to superb bike service. The

18 Summer 2016 - Thefreepress.ca

event happens right in Fernie, so competitors have many options for things to do and see post ride downtown. Riders will be feeling like locals in no time.

Singletrack 6 July 23-28

Six days and six stages, the singletrack six features a new route every year and combines cross-country mountain biking, amazing views and epic descents. Fernie hosts two of the stages before the trail takes cyclists to other Kootenay locations like Cranbrook, Kimberley and Golden. Accommodations for the event are determined by the rider; with many price points to choose from the event can meet almost any budget and get mountain bikers enjoying the trails. Stage 1 will be 39 km with approximately 1500m of elevation, riders will start with a spin through Fernie’s downtown and begin their six day spectacular single-track experience through Hyperventilation and Hyperextension then head over to ride the Ridgemont network and complete the day crossing the finish line at the Fernie Aquatic Centre. That’s just day one!

The Fernie Brewing Co. – craft beer from a quaint community The Fer nie Brewing Co. (FBC) started in the owner’s garage at their home on Dicken Road.

S

ince then, the microbrewery has moved location just off of Highway 3 on the east end of town. The new location has allowed the little brewery to grow, producing more flavours and products with a local flair. The brewery’s lineup features six staple beers that are available all year round, and seasonal ales that complement the varying seasons in the area. FBC are master brewers of a variety of flavours, including pale ales, porters, pilsners and IPAs. The IPA Bucket List is a collection of six IPAs, which are released for a limited time throughout the year. New to the IPA Bucket List this year are the Eldorado IPA and the Reel Peal IPA. Make sure to try all of the samples on the bucket list before deciding which one is your favourite. To sample all of the flavours, head out to the brewery for a tasting. This year, the brewery will add a patio to their tasting room, allowing visitors to taste the local beers while taking in the beautiful views. If you want to try most of the beers, why not try a Cheers for Charity paddle sample, where all of the money goes towards a good cause. The Cheers for Charity program donates all of the funds from the sale of sample paddles to local initiatives, and has donated over $25,000

22 Summer 2016 - Thefreepress.ca

to local causes to date. A paddle costs $5, and allows you to pick four flavours from any of the eight they have on tap at the time. If you’re looking for a souvenir distinct to Fernie, their store will have something to fit your need. Featuring hats, shirts, and books on microbrews, along with much more, their store is the perfect place to pick up a gift or souvenir from your trip to the area. And while you’re there, stop by to take home a growler of your favourite flavour, and take home a taste of the area as well. Mountain life is fundamental to the Fernie Brewing Co. This is why they can be seen at as many local events as they can be. Whether it is refreshments at the local hockey games or at the Wapiti Music Festival, FBC is proud to be a part of the Fernie community. If you have a small gathering or event, such as a wedding, they have kegs or casks available to complement any occasion.

Summer brews to try: •Red Caboose Ale •Project 9 Pilsner •Slingshot Sessions IPA •Lone Wolf IPA •Old Barn Saison

•Kickstand Honey Kolsch •Last Cast Summer IPA •Real Peel Grapefruit IPA

Lions Demolition Derby – a smashing good time Every Labour Day long weekend, locals and tourists alike gather at the demolition derby grounds for the annual Lions Club Demolition Derby.

E

ager crowds muster at the grounds around noon to watch the carnage as all types of vehicles battle through mud and sweat for the championship title. In a typical derby round, at least five vehicles ram into each other in a mud pit. The last operating vehicle is crowned as the winner. There is over $4,000 to be won. The demolition derby has been around for over 40 years, starting as a small derby in Hosmer. It has since grown into an annual Elk Valley tradition, attracting up to 5,000 spectators to the event. Over its 40-year span, the demolition derby has smashed over 1,000 cars and raised over half a million dollars for the Lions Club. The event is the main fundraiser for the Lions

24 Summer 2016 - Thefreepress.ca

Club, which uses the funds to support local initiatives, such as people with disabilities, sports teams and sick children, among many other causes. The 50/50 draw is a huge attraction, as last year’s winner took home over $5,000. Many locals have created their own traditions for Derby Day over the years, such as brunches with friends and dressing up for the occasion. It is the unofficial end of summer and is celebrated as such. The demolition derby takes place on the Sunday of the long weekend, with registration starting at 8 a.m. and the action starting at 12 p.m. Be sure to go early to get the best seating. ernie is famous for golf, mountain biking, fishing and hiking, but there is so much more to enjoy here in the summer! Did you know there is rock climbing not far from our doorstep? From a round of disc golf, game of tennis, bocce or horseshoes in James White Park, to hiking and a zipline/aerial park at Fernie Alpine Resort, as long as you have the equipment you need, there are lots of activities to choose from. Break your own trail this summer, and discover a new kind of adventure

Biking – see pages 10 to13 Camping – see pages 8,9 Chairlift Ride – see page 16 Dirt biking/Quadding

Fernie is an excellent destination for mountain biking on its expansive trail system, but for motorized dirt biking a quick trip to Elko — a 20 minute drive from Fernie — will pay off with an excellent dirt bike track.

Just for Kids – see page 49 Rafting – see pages 36,37 Rock-climbing

While Fernie is not a rock-climbing destination itself, you don’t have to travel too far to get a taste of it. Locals who want to scale a cliff head down to Montana’s Stone Hill, just across the U.S. border. It was actually a group of Fernie locals who first climbed at Stone Hill in the 70s, and they continue to develop lines there. The Highway of Love trek winds around the beautiful Lake Koocanusa — offering great lakeviews. Another nearby option is Lakit Lake near Cranbrook. For those wanting to give their kids a taste of climbing, take them to Fernie’s indoor rock walls in Evolution Gym or at the College of the Rockies to learn the basics.

Fish Fernie – dry fishing paradise

H

eading down to the East Kootenay waters is just as popular a summer pastime as heading into our mountains. The wide range of rivers, and beautiful mountain scenery have made Fernie a worldclass destination for all kinds of fishing. Whether your fishing style has you casting from the bank or in a drift boat with a guide, there are plenty of places to wet your line. Closest to home is the Elk River, which flows through Fernie and is fed by over 30 tributaries. The Elk River is well known for dry fly fishing, which is easier in the Elk as the flies that congregate here are big and easier to see, offering an excellent visual experience for the well-practiced and the novice alike. Most of the fishing is in the upper Elk (above the Elko dam). It is considered one of the best dry fly fishing rivers in North America. The South Country also offers many small lakes with good angling opportunities. Larger systems such as the Kootenay River and smaller rivers like the Wigwam provide even more options for everyone, from the experienced angler to the fishing freshmen. No matter what your fishing destination, be sure to get your provincial fishing license as well as a classified waters license specific to the

bear safety

R

unning into a black or grizzly bear while in Fernie can be a fairly common occurrence, they are our neighbours after all. It’s important to be bear aware at all times when you’re venturing out on the trails. Carry bear spray and know how to use it, but only rely on it as a last resort. Most human-bear encounters can be resolved without the use of bear spray, if not avoided entirely. Know your bear signs: −Scat is usually black in colour and will contain the remains of what was last eaten. Green scat is very fresh and means a bear is nearby. −Claw marks on trees or rotted stumps and logs. −Torn up rotted logs and stumps or overturned rocks (done by a bear looking for insects). −Bear tracks (bears have five toes and five claws). If you encounter a bear: −Remain calm, do not panic. −Do not run. Bears are predators (hunters) and running may cause a predatory response. If the bear hasn’t seen you: −Don’t attract the bear’s attention by making noise or yelling at it. −Look for a safe and quiet way of retreating while remaining aware of what the bear is doing. If the bear has seen you: −Stand your ground. −Make yourself as large as possible. −Speak to the bear, let it know that you are human. −Back away slowly and leave the area. Photo: Free Press files

wildlife Living in Fernie means sharing our home with many different animals. The Elk Valley is well known for its abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see elk, deer, moose, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. You might even be lucky enough to come across a wolf, coyote, cougar, lynx, or bobcat. Keep an eye out when you’re hiking the trails, cooling off in the river, or when you’re just taking a leisurely stroll down Second Avenue. And summer, of course, is bear season. Black bears are spotted frequently in and around town and the Elk and Flathead Valleys have one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears. Make sure you’ve always got your camera handy, but remember to keep your distance, and don’t forget to respect the nature we’re so proud of.

Hosmer Ruins

The first town to be settled in the area, back in 1906, Hosmer is located halfway between Sparwood and Fernie. Hosmer enjoyed a brief rise to fame when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) established a coal mining site there in 1908, including over 200 massive beehive coke ovens. Sadly, it was a bustling and busy town for less than two decades before CPR shut down the mine. Today, most of the old town is gone, but nestled in the nearby mountainside, deep in the brush, lie the magnificent and ghostly ruins of the mine site. Head into the trails, located just off the highway, and explore the eerie but beautiful ruins of Hosmer. Original mining buildings, an overgrown cemetery, and 46 of the remaining coke ovens are an amazing site to see tucked into the woods. For more information check out Bigdoer.com.

Te c k – behi n d t h e s e a ms Take the opportunity to discover more about mining on a mine tour this summer.

D

id you know that the beautiful Elk Valley is one of British Columbia’s most important industrial areas, home to five coal mines that produce 80 per cent of Canada’s steelmaking coal? Every July and August the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and Elkford Visitor Centre run bus tours of Teck’s open pit coal mines, which are all within one hour’s drive of Fernie. Buses stop at specially-placed lookout areas so you can safely get out of the bus to watch giant mechanical shovels clear waste rock away from the coal seams that run diagonally across the mountain. The coal is carried by house-sized haul trucks to the processing plant, where it is sorted, washed and dried before being loaded onto the CP Rail train and transported through B.C. to be shipped around the world to make steel. On the tour you’ll also see the maintenance shop that helps to keep the equipment in good working order, including stacks of large truck tires that cost over $40,000 each! Look out on the access roads to the operations – hundreds of elk, deer and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep live on the mine properties. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable mining and was named one of Canada’s most

A bl a s t f rom th e p ast History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. E xp eri en ce F er nie’s Au t h e n ti c C ul t u ral Her ita ge WE WORK HARD : COAL MINING IN FERNIE

Fernie is named after William Fernie who was the driving force behind the coal mines located in the Elk Valley region. The Crow’s Nest Coal and Mineral Company was incorporated in 1887, but it wouldn’t be until 1897 with the arrival of the southern branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway that mining would begin in earnest. With access to markets, the new town of Fernie boomed almost overnight. At the height of underground coal mining, over 6,000 people called Fernie home; today 4,400 people live in Fernie with another 1,600 living in the surrounding area.

TESTING OUR METTLE

Fernie is for die-hards. In the face of repeated economic adversity, fires and mining disasters for well over a century, Fernie still stands and is testament to the resilience of its people. Fernie suffered from catastrophic fires in 1904 and 1908. The 1908 fire reduced the entire town to smouldering ashes in less than 90 minutes. The brick and stone architecture visitors find today along Fernie’s main street was entirely built following this catastrophe.

WE PLAY HARD : ENJOYING FERNIE’S CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE

Fernie is all about life-work balance. Because we work hard, we play hard too. As a mountain community, we have been spoiled by both Mother Nature and a thriving cultural scene that has its roots in the early traditions of Fernie’s diverse multicultural community. Visitors to Fernie often describe their Fernie experience as authentic. Perhaps it’s our centuryold downtown and rich history, perhaps it’s our pristine natural environment. Or maybe it’s our friendly, down-to-earth community. Visitors would say it’s all three, really. Discover what residents and visitors alike have known for centuries …. we have a ton to explore and do. We invite you to discover Fernie’s mountain heritage.

Chautauqua & Fall Fair September 9, 10 & 11

A

t the center of historic downtown the Fernie Museum and Visitor Information Center makes its home in the 1908 Home Bank building. For visitors and locals alike the Museum is the best source to learn about Fernie’s rich and dramatic history as well as finding out about community events and programs happening this summer.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS : INNOVATIVE DISPLAYS

This Is Our Fernie explores the legend of a Ktunaxa curse, fires that razed the town to the ground, and mining disasters that cut like a knife through the community. Explore history through the eyes of early residents using interactive video stations. A mine tunnel and Discovery Drawers help children peek into Fernie’s history. A timeline showing Fernie’s

evolution from its earliest days into a fourseason resort community still dependent on coal mining.

CURRENTS : THE ELK RIVER SUMMER EXHIBIT and PROGRAMS

The Elk River has multiple identities – it is a mountain river fed by glaciers; it is a river that provides water and recreation for residents and visitors alike; and it also provides some of the best fishing in North America. Found on the museum’s 2nd floor gallery this exhibit will explore the river’s impact through artwork by local artists and interactive interpretive panels and activities. What better way to embrace the river than a float down the waters on a Sunday morning or fly fishing lessons? Canyon Raft Company and the Fernie Museum will be offering a Heritage River Float twice during the summer months. And the museum is partnering with Elk River Guiding to offer a learn-to fly fish program in August. These programs will include a visit to the museum gallery exhibit, Currents: An Artist Exploration of the Elk River. For dates and information contact the museum.

WALK THE WALK – STROLL THROUGH HISTORY

Summer walking tours will be offered every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August. Join Museum Guides to learn more about the prohibition era and the rum runners who used Fernie as their Hooch Hub. Or come to understand how the beautiful brick and stone buildings in Fernie’s heritage downtown came to be on a walking tour about the 1908 Fernie fire. Registration for the walks can be made at the museum.
