WELCOME to Fernie T

he seasons change fast in Fernie. It seems like one minute the snow is blanketing our mountain town, the next minute it’s melted and people are pedaling around town in shorts and sunglasses. Summer is an amazing time to be here. The long sunny days of summer mean there is plenty of time to slow things down, enjoy a round of golf, a long hike, a bike ride, a float on the river or just an iced coffee on a bench in the sunshine. Make the most of the cool mornings. Get up early and enjoy breakfast outdoors on a patio downtown. A good cup of coffee and healthy breakfast is just what is needed for a full day of outdoor fun. Slather on the sun screen, cover up with a hat and sunglasses, then see

where the day takes you. Adrenaline junkies can get their fix with whitewater rafting, downhill biking at Fernie Alpine Resort, or those that prefer a little more power can hit some trails on a quad or dirt bike. Those who prefer life a little more peaceful can enjoy golf, fishing, or a leisurely bike ride on the trails around town. Stop for lunch in town, at the golf club, or up at Island Lake Lodge when you are hiking in that area. Sit back with a cold drink and enjoy the scenery, warm sun, and cooling breeze coming off the mountains. Fill your afternoon with as much or as little as you like, then watch the sun going down and see the Ghostrider appear on Mount Hosmer as the grill is being fired up. This is summer in Fernie.

Discovering Historical Fernie

Take yourself back 100 years in time and spend an afternoon absorbed in Fernie’s rich history. Use the Fernie and District Historical Society’s Heritage Walking Tour booklet to guide your visit. Booklets are for sale ($5) at the Fernie Museum, on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street. Here is a sample of the interesting stories and photos that you will find inside.

Ingram Block 542 - 2nd Avenue

C

onstruction in 1908 was interrupted by the fire; some say the Fernie yellow brick is now stronger because it was effectively re-fired. This building has, in the past, served as a cigar store, barber shop, lunch counter, pool room, gymnasium, bath house and dry cleaners. The upstairs held boxing matches through the 20's and 30's. It was here that Ernie Arthur competed for, and won, the Canadian middleweight title in September 1923. The building is now home to Board Stiff.

Home Bank 491 - 2nd Avenue

his highly decorative building was constructed in 1910 to house a branch of the Home Bank. Except for the paint, the exterior is in its original configuration, making this a significant architectural site. The failure of the Home Bank in 1923 cost Fernie depositors $800,000 and led to a re-writing of Canada's banking laws. These new rules prevented widespread bank failures in the 1930's. The building is now the new home of the Fernie & District Historical Society Museum.

Fernie Cartage Co. 701 - 2nd Avenue

I

n 1908, the Fernie Cartage Company rebuilt its livery using rubblestone quarried from the banks of the Elk River making it unique in downtown Fernie. For many years, before automobiles were commonly used, the company delivered milk, coal and other goods to Fernie households using its fleet of horse-drawn drays. In the 1920's this building was "The Up-To-Date Garage" for servicing vehicles and was briefly a Chrysler dealership in 1925. It is therefore important for its association with early systems of

transportation in the community before and after the arrival of automobiles. The building has been beautifully restored and is now home to Livery Home and the Picnic Restaurant and Social.

Fernie’s Great Fire of 1908

F

uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only thirty six buildings survived the blaze yet through quick thinking, bold actions and some good luck, fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke

ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over thirty miles of forest in the Elk Valley. A relief kitchen and tent city quickly appeared on the grounds of the coal company’s office. Donations, supplies, building materials and builders poured in from all over North America. Within hours, citizens and businesses were setting up tents and erecting temporary wooden structures. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. Temporary wooden structures were allowed, but all permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity. A

s soon as the snow has melted, locals are trading their four wheels for two, and the downtown area is usually filled with more bikes than

cars. From three-year-olds to 70-year-olds, pedaling around Fernie, even if just to the grocery store and back, is the only way to get around. Getting started with mountain biking can be intimidating if you don’t know what you need. Going to a shop like Gear Hub or The Guides Hut is a good place to start – the experts there can help you find exactly the right bike and gear for what you want to do. Depending on what kind of biking you want to do, you can find one-speed townies for cruising around town, serious, full suspension mountain bikes for downhill racers, and all bikes in between right here in Fernie. As Alain at The Guides Hut said, “Fernie is a good place to ride because Fernie puts the “mountain” into mountain biking! “Our trails are a good mix of old school, new school, technical, fast and flowy and have amazing views!” Featuring terrain for all levels of riders, these well marked trails are graded from greens to double-black diamonds. For a great vacation, combine lift access downhill biking at Fernie Alpine Resort with cross country riding on Fernie’s famous single track trails. There are no trail use fees, however support of the local Mountain Bike Club and Fernie Trails Alliance is very much appreciated. Visit www.bikefernie.ca and www. fernietrailsalliance.com for more details. Guides Hut owner Mark Gallup says there is no better place to mountain bike than Fernie. “I have been to lots of little towns around BC famous for mountain biking, but nowhere beats Fernie.” “It’s the amazing network of trails that we have here. Every year two or three more are built. Fernie Alpine Resort is great for downhill mountain biking, but we also have trails going straight from town, pretty much everywhere. “ Other recommended pieces of equipment are helmets, hydration packs, gloves and good eyewear. “There’s lots of stuff you need, but really, the most important thing is your bike, and then your friends so you can share the experience,” says Mark. “That’s what really makes mountain biking so fun.”

BEGINNER

Sidewinder up in Ridgemont is a great blue trail for those who aren’t ready to take on anything too challenging. It is a great trail for accessing the beautiful Ridgemont area and network of trails. Climb up What’s Up Doc then down Sidewinder.

INTERMEDIATE

Head up Sidewinder into Eco Terrorist to Dead Fall then down Oh Dear. Or else head out of town. Mushroom Head, accessed from the provincial park campground, is a little more challenging as it is a lot of uphill. But it’s such an amazing feeling when you get to the great lookout point at the top.

ADVANCED

Three Kings, accessed from the glider launch up by the microwave tower on Morrissey Ridge, is a classic Fernie ride, 4,000 ft. of single steep downhill track with lots of stunts. It features some natural log rides, ladders, gap jumps and berms, which all add up to lots of fun. It’s an epic ride, you just need to get someone to shuttle you up to the tower. Otherwise try out Hypervent and then head down Hyperextension out in Castle Mountain.

On the River

The Elk River and its tributaries offer the finest cutthroat trout waters. These classic streams give fly-fishermen world-class fishing with a setting difficult to match. To obtain a licence or take a lesson visit one of many fishing shops on Highway 3 in Fernie. They also offer professionally guided single or multi-day trips with local guides.

Paddling

Paddling in Fernie’s waters is an adventure of a lifetime! Join Mountain High River Adventures, the premier whitewater and float trip specialists in Fernie, and you will experience the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies while you raft thrilling whitewater or gently float the river. Fernie rivers and lakes also keep you kayaking, canoeing or tubing all summer long. Enjoy a guided kayak tour or rent for the day with South Country Kayaks. 250-423-4483. For scenic floats or whitewater adventures call Mountain High River Adventures at 250-423-5008. Check out PaddleFernie.com for detailed river information.

YOU ARE IN BEAR COUNTRY

Fernie and the surrounding area are home to black and grizzly bears. Whether you’re out for a hike, camping or riding your bike, you need to know how to behave in bear country. If this is your first time travelling in bear areas you’ll want to visit The British Columbia Conservation Foundation’s Bear Aware website at www.bearaware. bc.ca. It’s full of bear facts, conflict prevention tips and community program information. It will help you learn about bears and how to stay safe!

Swimming/Tubing

The Elk River and lakes around Fernie offer many places to swim and tube. Take the kids for a dip or relax on a beach towel at Fernie’s man-made Maiden Lake behind Extra Foods. Visit Island Lake and experience the beauty of a true wilderness lake. For the more adventurous water seekers float on the Elk River between the Fernie bridges all the way to Fernie Alpine Resort on tubes or small rafts and manage Fernie’s class one rapids in a two to four hour adventure. Be sure to scout your route before you head out; there are some log jams and fast currents to be aware of. Be sure to wear your personal flotation device.

Dog Days of summer F

ernie loves dogs. The town has nearly as many furry friends as people and it’s not surprising when you stop and take a look around. With incredible mountain trails, riverside walks and city parks on the doorstep, there is nowhere more exciting for a dog to explore. Here are five of our favourites.

1

BEST FOREST HIKE Old Growth Trail

This trail begins approximately 3 kms up the Island Lake Lodge road and finishes at the lodge. It is an easy, mostly flat, walk through a beautiful valley, taking less than an hour. Look for the stunning old growth cedar trees and the great views of the Lizard Range. Leashes are advised.

2

BEST HOT DAY WALK Fernie Provincial Park

Just outside the city, this network of trails offers shady forest, creeks and rivers, and stunning viewpoints. Most trails connect to make loops and you can go for as long or as short a walk as you want. There are lots of hills, making it great exercise for you and your dog with lots of water for dogs to cool off in. Beware of bikers and wildlife.

3

BEST FETCH SPOT Ridgemont Trails

Beautiful, peaceful trails right from the middle of town. The area can be accessed from a trail beside the cemetery entrance. Part way up the trail there is a great open area for playing fetch with your dog . It is best hiked early morning as it can be hot in the summer and pretty busy with bikers.

20 Summer 2012 - www.thefreepress.ca

4 BEST IN TOWN WALK Maiden Lake/Great Northern Trail

The Great Northern trail winds through mixed forest and follows the Elk River for your dog to cool off in. It is a flat town trail and easily accessed from Maiden Lake, another doggie favourite. It can also be linked with the Emily Brydon Trail that meanders beside the river and through Annex Park.

5 BEST OUT OF TOWN WALK Fairy Creek Trail

A bit more challenging than the others, this trail can go as far as 12 km if you have the energy. Otherwise, just go as far as you like and enjoy a break from the heat of summer. The trail is mostly shady with a side section leading to the river and a small waterfall. Bear sightings are common so keep a leash at hand. The trail begins at the Information Centre just east of town.

Biking Trails at Fernie Alpine Resort

Dirt Biking & Quading For those that prefer not to explore the beautiful surroundings on foot, dirt bikes and quads provide a great solution. A lot of the backcountry is easily accessible on two or four wheels and the trails in the Coal Creek area have become very popular. This diverse network, located immediately to the west of Fernie, offers a great range of intermediate and expert rides. Access to the main road is off Coal Creek Road, bringing you into the heart of the network. The rides can be linked together in a multitude of ways. The upper trails climb high above the valley and offer great views to the west. One trail worth investigating is the one leading up to the old mine. The power line on the east side of Fernie, close to Hosmer, is another great ride. South of Fernie, the South Country offers a flatter choice of trails and is really popular. Make sure you grab a map, water and food before you head out and then see what the day brings you. For more information go to www.ghostridermotorsports.ca

The Miner’s Walk

The Miners’ Walk is located outside City Hall on 3rd Avenue and is a great opportunity to learn about coal mining in the Elk Valley. The highlight of the exhibition is a large sculpture created by internationally known artist Jeff de Boer. The sculpture consists of individual shapes set on pedestals. As you walk around the exhibition the shapes appear to be random, but when you reach the right spot, they come together to reveal a larger than life miner’s face. In addition to the sculpture, there are colourful signs and information on the importance and history of coal mining in the Elk Valley.
