e has finally proposed? Then your top priority is to tell everyone the good news! Once your initial excitement has calmed down a touch, though, you’ll have to take time to do some serious thinking. There are so many details to plan, a budget to draw up, and deadlines to be met: it seems so overwhelming. If you are finding it hard to get some traction and launch your wedding planning, here are ten tips to give you some direction and help you get moving.

Establish your budget per guest. In fact, this is the perfect time to draw up your guest list.

Order your invitations, being careful to include your names, the date, time, and place of the wedding and reception, as well as the date by which you need to receive replies. Being clear about this will help you save a lot of precious time and money. Be sure to include stamped, addressed envelopes if you can.

Book the reception hall. The reception hall is often one of the biggest expenses, so be sure to reserve one as quickly as possible. If you want to keep expenses down, think about holding the reception at a family home or in a garden. Choose a caterer. Creating a good atmosphere is just as important as choosing a caterer, although you don’t want to skimp on food either. To cut costs, consider serving fewer courses, with a focus on excellent quality instead of quantity.

Make up or order wedding favours for your guests. These are put with their place setting or offered at the end of the reception. Let your imagination run wild: you could offer small homemade soaps, candles, local produce in mini format, bath pearls, or small boxes of candies. It can also be fun to have a “retro” favour, such as a pack of matches with the bride and groom’s names embossed on the matchbook cover.

Shop for a wedding gown. Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality. It is also possible to rent a dress for the occasion, much as your beloved can buy or rent his tuxedo. Book your hair, make-up, esthetician, and manicure appointments several weeks before the wedding. If possible, plan a test run.

Write wedding vows. Put all your heart into writing down the vows that you would like to make during the marriage ceremony. If you plan to make a speech at the reception, be sure to get that down in writing as well. Plan the reception down to the last detail: create the atmosphere you like with suitable music, entertainment, and a décor that matches your personality. (Don’t forget to decorate the bathrooms, a place everyone will see at some point!)

And while we’re talking weddings, here are a few other tips to keep in mind: * Avoid giving important jobs to the parents of the bride and groom — unless they really want to be involved that way. Instead, let them enjoy being with the guests. * If you intend to create a gift list, be sure to put it on the Internet so that it will be easily accessible to everyone. * Take photographs of your hair and makeup test runs so you can choose the perfect combination when you’re well rested. Prepare a make-up kit for any touch-up jobs on your big day. * Leave a guest book at the entrance of the reception hall. It’s a great souvenir to keep, along with your photo album. * Leave a disposable camera on every table so that guests can record magical moments during the reception.

Tips for trying on WEDDING GOWNS

housands of different styles and models of wedding gowns are available on the market, one more beautiful than the next. From white to cream, from long to short, and lace, pearls, and silks: there is certainly no lack of choice. But before you set out on a marathon tour of all the wedding dress boutiques, it is important to get to know your body type so that you can know what style of dress will best suit you. • Do you have an hourglass shape (shoulders and hips of equal width, with smaller waist)? You could treat yourself to a “mermaid” gown that accentuates your

curves. If you dream of a royal wedding, the princess dress is perfect for you, as is a twopiece dress with a bustier. In short, anything that flatters the waistline will emphasize your feminine curves. • For apple or V-shaped figures (shoulders broader than the hips), look more for an empire waist or A-line dress which will balance your proportions. • If your hips are wider than your shoulders, you have a pear or A-shaped figure. Look for an A-line style and avoid a straight or mermaid dress that draws eyes where you don’t want them to be. • When your shoulders, hips, and waist are all of a similar

width, you have a straight or I-shape. Avoid a straight dress, opting for an A-line or princess style or one with a bodice, which will create a more curved effect. • If you’re petite, look for a simple dress without too many frills. Belts should be avoided, as they will cut your silhouette in two where a lengthening effect would be more desirable. No matter what your body type, let your instincts guide you towards the dress of your dreams. Don’t hesitate to ask for a few extra adjustments so that you will feel completely comfortable in your gown.

There are certain tips that can make the experience go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown.

Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts. It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing. It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations.

Trends for the groom: tone-on-tone

n the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a well-dressed groom will still be appreciated. He is one of the main stars of this celebration, after all! A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; after those criteria, the groom should choose a suit he feels comfortable in, one that corresponds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fitted suit, the groom should have a last fitting, two or three weeks before the wedding. Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. Responsibilities vary for wedding party participants

eing chosen as a best man or a maid of honour is a significant and meaningful honour. Those roles have evolved over the years, but these special participants must still perform some of the traditional duties of the past, including serving as the official witnesses. The following is a rundown of the various duties bestowed on those chosen for these distinguished honours. Prior to the wedding Before the wedding takes place, the maid of honour will closely assist the bride-tobe with many of the important decisions related to the look and the feel of the wedding. She typically accompanies the bride to dress shops to select gowns for the bride and bridesmaids. Much in the same manner, the best man will assist the groom-to-be with choosing tuxedoes or suits and also with coordinating with the ushers to ensure they know when to go for fittings. Traditionally the bride and her bridesmaids have taken on the majority of the wedding planning, so the maid of honour can expect to play a larger role than the best man. The maid of honour may be asked to delegate certain assignments, such as helping to find wedding vendors or addressing invitations. She may go with the bride for makeup and hairstyle trials. Together with the bridesmaids, she will plan a bridal shower and a bachelorette party. She may select a wedding gift for the couple and present it on behalf of all the wedding attendants.

The best man will coordinate the bachelor party and may be asked to assist the groom in booking the honeymoon. Wedding day On the day of the wedding, the maid of honour and the best man will act as a support system for the bride and groom. The maid of honour will help the bride get dressed and help iron out any miniemergencies that should crop up. The best man will help ensure all of the ushers are dressed and get the groom to the wedding on time. During the ceremony, the maid of honour will hold the brideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bouquet while she participates in the wedding. The best man will keep the rings safe until they are needed. The maid of honour also will help

adjust the brideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s train and veil as she sits and stands during the ceremony. Both will sign the marriage certificate as witnesses. At the reception, the best man is expected to give a toast and the maid of honour may share some words as well. After the wedding The best man will be in charge of returning the tuxedoes to the rental shop, if necessary. He also may drive the newly married couple to the airport or motel so they can begin their honeymoon. The maid of honour will assist the bride in changing out of her gown and into her travel clothes. Oftentimes the maid of honour takes the gown to the cleaners in the days following the ceremony so the dress can be preserved.

One tradition that has endured is the wedding registry, which is designed to help wedding guests find the right gift for the couple of honour. A marriage doesn’t just bring together two people in love, it also serves as the catalyst for merging their worlds into one. For couples who may have had homes separately from one another before getting married, they may be bringing along housewares, furniture and other décor. This could mean it’s time to rethink what should be included in their home together. Today registries are an invaluable part of the wedding process, and one eagerly anticipated by couples. Registries needn’t be limited to just one type of retail outlet. In fact, couples can help guests out by registering with multiple merchants. Doing so gives guests more options. The bridal registry will take the guesswork out of wedding gifts, if it’s used correctly by the couple and their guests. A picture-perfect romance When Fernie photographer Kyle Hamilton decided to tie the knot, the one thing he knew he wanted to get right was the photos.

yle and wife Rebecca met two years ago trekking in Nepal, raising money for the Nepal Schools Trust, a UK based charity. Kyle says the pair hit it off right away, and Rebecca, who is from Norwich in England, visited Kyle in Fernie two months later. After she went back to the UK, the couple had to rely on Skype and Facebook to carry on their relationship, which soon became annoying. Kyle finally made the trip out to see Rebecca and then they

decided to bite the bullet. “One of us had to make the move if it was going to work,” said Kyle. “I had my house and business here in Fernie so she packed up and moved to Fernie.” The next summer the couple were driving back from visiting Kyle’s parents in Saskatchewan, when Kyle popped the question. “Rebecca had lots of photos of gravel roads, so I stopped the car and set up my camera on a timer to take a photo of us in the

middle of a gravel road. Then I proposed, and it was all caught on camera.” Just 28 days later, in August 2012, the couple married at Island Lake Lodge, just outside Fernie, with just their parents present. “We kept it small, just the six of us. It was hard for her whole family to come out from the UK and get the time off work,” said Kyle. “So we got married, had dinner off the menu, and then the next day I got up and shot a wedding!” PHOTO: Matt Kuhn

Flowers: a key element of a beautiful wedding

n many people’s minds, a successful wedding event often rests on the choice of flowers. The most beautiful of Mother Nature’s offerings, they are essential for setting the tone of the day. The trend in 2013 is towards smaller bouquets and less imposing floral centrepieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stoneware, for example. Two timeless favourites, the rose and the orchid, adapt perfectly to all these different vases. Just imagine the elegant yet contemporary look these flowers have when arranged in a huge glass vase on a guestbook table or beside an altar.

The trend in bouquets is turning towards natural simplicity rather than extravagance. White, cream, and ivory flowers form the base, with lots of greenery to set them off. Branches and leaves matched to different types of flowers are used to top off a glorious monochrome bouquet. Regardless of the colours, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. If your gown is simple, exoticism and creativity can run wild. Round bouquets go well with

Size matters The body shapes and sizes of the women in your bridal party will be different, and this should be kept in mind when selecting a gown style and cut. There are certain dress shapes that are universally flattering, such as A-line. Try to avoid gowns that are extremely form-fitting, as only a few of the bridesmaids may be able to pull off this look successfully. The remainder could be left feeling selfconscious and uncomfortable. Plus, form-fitting clothing will be restrictive and can be difficult to move around in -- particularly considering the gown will be worn for an entire day. Flattering Colour As a bride you may have a colourscape in your mind for the wedding. But what looks good in table linens and

flowers is not always the right choice for clothing. Take the skin tones and hair colours of your bridesmaids into consideration before choosing a dress. Green- and yellowhued dresses may not look nice on women with olive skin tones, while very pale colours may wash out women with fair skin. Those with dark skin may need a brighter-coloured dress. Price Tag It is an honour to be asked to be part of a bridal party, but that honour can be very expensive. The bridesmaids are expected to pay for their wardrobe, hair styling, and makeup, as well as parties and gifts for the happy couple. As a courtesy to the women who already will be investing a considerable amount to be a part of your wedding, make every effort to select a gown that is affordable.

Custom music for your special day

ike Pecora took a passion for music and spun it into a thriving business which takes him to weddings all over the Kootenay region of British Columbia as part of Elite Sound and Light. Known as DJ SlickMick when he plays music, Pecora started DJing at parties and celebrations at the age of 13. “A good friend of mine who lived in Golden was doing something similar to what I was doing. He was my sister’s boyfriend at the time and I was the irritating little brother who would hang out and flash his lights for him,” he said. When the friend moved out of town, Pecora borrowed $1,500 from his parents and bought himself two cassette decks, amplifiers and speakers. “I rented a hall one weekend here in town and held my very first teen dance. I was only 13 and haven’t looked back since.” On the night of his first show, he paid back his parents the money he had borrowed from them and was hooked on the job. Over the years, Pecora has worked house parties, local bars, and then started doing weddings. “I have built up my system to where I am now rolling to big shows with two trailers to haul all of my gear that could be needed,” he said. “’I can do anything’

I have literally done it all because I have been doing this for so long,” he said. “Right from a basic system with a rental P.A. system, to doing karaoke and videos. I can support a wedding by rolling in with a portable stage. The band shows up and I set them up while playing music in between their sets.” Pecora added that if people want to have a vinyl theme to the wedding he can spin records if it is requested, or he can do

everything through digital music as well. As for why he enjoys the wedding side of his business, Pecora explained that the days are always fun, and you just never know what you are going to be asked to do. “Weddings are fun. Everyone is in a good mood and everybody looks good. It is positive from the start of the day,” he said. “Whatever comes into their minds I am willing to build packages with them.” He explained that he has played music in chain mail for a wedding as he was fine with it. “It was a challenge because it was heavy but it looked good for the setting.” Pecora is also a well-known local singer, and has even been asked to perform songs at weddings in the past. “I sang the bride and groom’s song at a wedding last summer. They had been married in Vegas and had the party in Golden. I came out for the first song and sang them an Elvis tune in full costume.” Pecora said he does everything he can to make every wedding a unique experience, and wants to add a different atmosphere to the weddings. Make the effort to give the people who mean enough to you to score an invite to the big event something to do during those inevitable lulls in the action. In the East Kootenay, the beautiful views provided by the great outdoors can often be incorporated into a wedding-goer activity. Send your guests on a quick and scenic walk – keep in mind their wedding attire won’t likely accommodate more than a stroll. Set up stations through trees or a field where they can answer fun trivia questions about the bride and groom. Send them out with a map, and be sure to include a few fun party favours to help inspire them.
