H

e has finally proposed? Then your top priority is to tell everyone the good news! Once your initial excitement has calmed down a touch, though, you’ll have to take time to do some serious thinking. There are so many details to plan, a budget to draw up, and deadlines to be met: it seems so overwhelming. If you are finding it hard to get some traction and launch your wedding planning, here are ten tips to give you some direction and help you get moving.

1 2

Establish your budget per guest. In fact, this is the perfect time to draw up your guest list.

Order your invitations, being careful to include your names, the date, time, and place of the wedding and reception, as well as the date by which you need to receive replies. Being clear about this will help you save a lot of precious time and money. Be sure to include stamped, addressed envelopes if you can.

3 4

Book the reception hall. The reception hall is often one of the biggest expenses, so be sure to reserve one as quickly as possible. If you want to keep expenses down, think about holding the reception at a family home or in a garden. Choose a caterer. Creating a good atmosphere is just as important as choosing a caterer, although you don’t want to skimp on food either. To cut costs, consider serving fewer courses, with a focus on excellent quality instead of quantity.

Make up or order wedding favours for your guests. These are put with their place setting or offered at the end of the reception. Let your imagination run wild: you could offer small homemade soaps, candles, local produce in mini format, bath pearls, or small boxes of candies. It can also be fun to have a “retro” favour, such as a pack of matches with the bride and groom’s names embossed on the matchbook cover.

6 7 8 9 10

Shop for a wedding gown. Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality. It is also possible to rent a dress for the occasion, much as your beloved can buy or rent his tuxedo. Book your hair, make-up, esthetician, and manicure appointments several weeks before the wedding. If possible, plan a test run.

Write wedding vows. Put all your heart into writing down the vows that you would like to make during the marriage ceremony. If you plan to make a speech at the reception, be sure to get that down in writing as well. Plan the reception down to the last detail: create the atmosphere you like with suitable music, entertainment, and a décor that matches your personality. (Don’t forget to decorate the bathrooms, a place everyone will see at some point!)

Organize your honeymoon so that you can celebrate your new life together.

And while we’re talking weddings, here are a few other tips to keep in mind: * Avoid giving important jobs to the parents of the bride and groom — unless they really want to be involved that way. Instead, let them enjoy being with the guests. * If you intend to create a gift list, be sure to put it on the Internet so that it will be easily accessible to everyone. * Take photographs of your hair and makeup test runs so you can choose the perfect combination when you’re well rested. Prepare a make-up kit for any touch-up jobs on your big day. * Leave a guest book at the entrance of the reception hall. It’s a great souvenir to keep, along with your photo album. * Leave a disposable camera on every table so that guests can record magical moments during the reception.

Tips for trying on WEDDING GOWNS

T

housands of different styles and models of wedding gowns are available on the market, one more beautiful than the next. From white to cream, from long to short, and lace, pearls, and silks: there is certainly no lack of choice. But before you set out on a marathon tour of all the wedding dress boutiques, it is important to get to know your body type so that you can know what style of dress will best suit you. • Do you have an hourglass shape (shoulders and hips of equal width, with smaller waist)? You could treat yourself to a “mermaid” gown that accentuates your

curves. If you dream of a royal wedding, the princess dress is perfect for you, as is a twopiece dress with a bustier. In short, anything that flatters the waistline will emphasize your feminine curves. • For apple or V-shaped figures (shoulders broader than the hips), look more for an empire waist or A-line dress which will balance your proportions. • If your hips are wider than your shoulders, you have a pear or A-shaped figure. Look for an A-line style and avoid a straight or mermaid dress that draws eyes where you don’t want them to be. • When your shoulders, hips, and waist are all of a similar

width, you have a straight or I-shape. Avoid a straight dress, opting for an A-line or princess style or one with a bodice, which will create a more curved effect. • If you’re petite, look for a simple dress without too many frills. Belts should be avoided, as they will cut your silhouette in two where a lengthening effect would be more desirable. No matter what your body type, let your instincts guide you towards the dress of your dreams. Don’t hesitate to ask for a few extra adjustments so that you will feel completely comfortable in your gown.

There are certain tips that can make the experience go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown.

Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts. It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing. It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations.

Trends for the groom: tone-on-tone

O

n the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a well-dressed groom will still be appreciated. He is one of the main stars of this celebration, after all! A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; after those criteria, the groom should choose a suit he feels comfortable in, one that corresponds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fitted suit, the groom should have a last fitting, two or three weeks before the wedding. The fabric of the groom’s suit should be chosen according to the season and its overall style should match the tone of the wedding; a suit is perfect for an afternoon wedding, while a tuxedo is required for an evening event. When choosing a suit, think of it as an investment; it should signal sophistication and elegance rather than office-job functionality. Once a suit has been chosen, the next

secret to a refined look lies in the tie. A contemporary finish requires a tone-ontone tie that matches the colour of the shirt; it is a very attractive look, especially

if both are pale in colour. Pale tone-ontone will brighten up the complexion and highlight the smile.

Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were recently divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No licence is issued until the courts finalize a divorce, normally 31 days after the divorce decree is issued by the Courts. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a

marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Responsibilities vary for wedding party participants

B

eing chosen as a best man or a maid of honour is a significant and meaningful honour. Those roles have evolved over the years, but these special participants must still perform some of the traditional duties of the past, including serving as the official witnesses. The following is a rundown of the various duties bestowed on those chosen for these distinguished honours. Prior to the wedding Before the wedding takes place, the maid of honour will closely assist the bride-tobe with many of the important decisions related to the look and the feel of the wedding. She typically accompanies the bride to dress shops to select gowns for the bride and bridesmaids. Much in the same manner, the best man will assist the groom-to-be with choosing tuxedoes or suits and also with coordinating with the ushers to ensure they know when to go for fittings. Traditionally the bride and her bridesmaids have taken on the majority of the wedding planning, so the maid of honour can expect to play a larger role than the best man. The maid of honour may be asked to delegate certain assignments, such as helping to find wedding vendors or addressing invitations. She may go with the bride for makeup and hairstyle trials. Together with the bridesmaids, she will plan a bridal shower and a bachelorette party. She may select a wedding gift for the couple and present it on behalf of all the wedding attendants.

The best man will coordinate the bachelor party and may be asked to assist the groom in booking the honeymoon. Wedding day On the day of the wedding, the maid of honour and the best man will act as a support system for the bride and groom. The maid of honour will help the bride get dressed and help iron out any miniemergencies that should crop up. The best man will help ensure all of the ushers are dressed and get the groom to the wedding on time. During the ceremony, the maid of honour will hold the bride’s bouquet while she participates in the wedding. The best man will keep the rings safe until they are needed. The maid of honour also will help

adjust the bride’s train and veil as she sits and stands during the ceremony. Both will sign the marriage certificate as witnesses. At the reception, the best man is expected to give a toast and the maid of honour may share some words as well. After the wedding The best man will be in charge of returning the tuxedoes to the rental shop, if necessary. He also may drive the newly married couple to the airport or motel so they can begin their honeymoon. The maid of honour will assist the bride in changing out of her gown and into her travel clothes. Oftentimes the maid of honour takes the gown to the cleaners in the days following the ceremony so the dress can be preserved.

Make local businesses a part of your wedding day

F

uture brides and grooms don’t always realize just how much time they will have to devote to organizing their wedding. From the moment your engagement is announced, many hours will be spent making innumerable decisions and countless appointments. But don’t worry: you can save an amazing amount of time by dealing with local businesses. Why not combine practicality with pleasure by focusing locally when preparing your wedding. Everyone would agree that organizing a wedding isn’t an easy thing to do, and so it can be very reassuring to be able to count on people that you’ve known all of your life, or almost, to make a success of this important event. Just think for a moment about all the steps involved: choosing the location of the wedding and reception, shopping for wedding bands, the gown, selecting a photographer, making up the guest list, having invitations and thank-you cards printed, planning the menu, decorating the reception hall, finding a DJ, selecting a cake, ordering flowers and favours. The list is long and the job, huge. By choosing to buy local, not only will you avoid wasting a great deal of time driving long distances but you will also have the pleasure of involving people in your community, those who are a part of your neighbourhood and local economy. Your florist, caterer, jeweller, and all those other business people will be eager partners in making your wedding the best party of your life.

Gift registry can help couples make a home

W

hile many once popular wedding traditions might have fallen by the wayside, many others have withstood the test of time. One tradition that has endured is the wedding registry, which is designed to help wedding guests find the right gift for the couple of honour. A marriage doesn’t just bring together two people in love, it also serves as the catalyst for merging their worlds into one. For couples who may have had homes separately from one another before getting married, they may be bringing along housewares, furniture and other décor. This could mean it’s time to rethink what should be included in their home together. Today registries are an invaluable part of the wedding process, and one eagerly anticipated by couples. Registries needn’t be limited to just one type of retail outlet. In fact, couples can help guests out by registering with multiple merchants. Doing so gives guests more options. The bridal registry will take the guesswork out of wedding gifts, if it’s used correctly by the couple and their guests. Here are some guidelines for using registries successfully: • Registering for wedding gifts

should be one of the first tasks you tackle when you get engaged. Friends and relatives will be looking to buy wedding gifts as soon as he pops the question. Really! Take the guesswork out of gift buying by making sure they know what you want. • Give yourselves plenty of time to select what you like. These are important decisions, and you should think them over. Hitting the stores together is essential. After all, the gifts are for both of you. • Register in a variety of price ranges. Include high-priced gifts for guests who can afford them and less expensive gifts for shower guests and guests on limited budgets. • Use your imagination. China, crystal, silver, linen and housewares are classic wedding gifts- and perennial favourites with brides and grooms- but consider registering other items as well. • Don’t overlap. Register each item in one store only. Otherwise, you may get frazzled keeping track of gifts that have and haven’t been purchased or end up with duplicates. • Keep a running gift list. Make a note of each item you receive, who sent it and any thoughts that come to mind when you unwrap it on a master note pad. This will make writing thank-you notes easier.

2013

Wedding Cake Trends The New Year brings about a change from 2012 Wedding Cake trends (elegant, classic, and bold) to brand new 2013 trends! When it comes to organizing a wedding, choosing the cake for the special day can be one of the most exciting planning events!

VINTAGE Paying homage to era’s past, wedding cakes will be showing muted colours, ruffles and lace. Lace on wedding cakes will dominate 2013 styles as embellishments, edging and overall icing design. Mimicking bridal dresses including corsets, ruffles and lace details, will also be very popular and will be seen accented with jewels and bling!

MINT Mint green made a start in 2012, and it’s popularity will continue to grow in 2013. Cupcakes and cakes coloured mint, with matching elaborations will be popular on cake tables this year. Pairing the colour mint with the flavour, chocolate cakes filled with mint buttercream will create the perfect match.

EXTRAVAGANT FLAVOURS Pairing sweet and salty flavours together, such as peanut butter and chocolate are breaking the traditional vanilla. Salted caramel filling and buttercream is very popular and pairs well with both chocolate and vanilla. How does bacon sound in your cake? For a groom’s cake, it is becoming very popular, showing appreciation to the men in the reception. Looking for something lighter? Try lemon lavender . . . lemon buttercream paired with lavender buttercream.

PATTERNS

Patterns such as chevrons, stripes, and circles will be a popular 2013 style. Bold, clean patterns with bright accents, flowers and ribbons will compliment basic white coverings, and standout as serious statement pieces.

TALL TIERS Cakes in 2013 will be tall . . . the taller the better! Tall tiers (six inches in height) with multiple tiers (four and five levels) will create cakes that will dwarf cakes of years past. These prominent tiers will create a memorable site for all to see.

A picture-perfect romance When Fernie photographer Kyle Hamilton decided to tie the knot, the one thing he knew he wanted to get right was the photos.

K

yle and wife Rebecca met two years ago trekking in Nepal, raising money for the Nepal Schools Trust, a UK based charity. Kyle says the pair hit it off right away, and Rebecca, who is from Norwich in England, visited Kyle in Fernie two months later. After she went back to the UK, the couple had to rely on Skype and Facebook to carry on their relationship, which soon became annoying. Kyle finally made the trip out to see Rebecca and then they

decided to bite the bullet. “One of us had to make the move if it was going to work,” said Kyle. “I had my house and business here in Fernie so she packed up and moved to Fernie.” The next summer the couple were driving back from visiting Kyle’s parents in Saskatchewan, when Kyle popped the question. “Rebecca had lots of photos of gravel roads, so I stopped the car and set up my camera on a timer to take a photo of us in the

middle of a gravel road. Then I proposed, and it was all caught on camera.” Just 28 days later, in August 2012, the couple married at Island Lake Lodge, just outside Fernie, with just their parents present. “We kept it small, just the six of us. It was hard for her whole family to come out from the UK and get the time off work,” said Kyle. “So we got married, had dinner off the menu, and then the next day I got up and shot a wedding!” PHOTO: Matt Kuhn

Flowers: a key element of a beautiful wedding

I

n many people’s minds, a successful wedding event often rests on the choice of flowers. The most beautiful of Mother Nature’s offerings, they are essential for setting the tone of the day. The trend in 2013 is towards smaller bouquets and less imposing floral centrepieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stoneware, for example. Two timeless favourites, the rose and the orchid, adapt perfectly to all these different vases. Just imagine the elegant yet contemporary look these flowers have when arranged in a huge glass vase on a guestbook table or beside an altar.

The trend in bouquets is turning towards natural simplicity rather than extravagance. White, cream, and ivory flowers form the base, with lots of greenery to set them off. Branches and leaves matched to different types of flowers are used to top off a glorious monochrome bouquet. Regardless of the colours, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. If your gown is simple, exoticism and creativity can run wild. Round bouquets go well with

tapered dresses, and cascading bouquets are perfect for gowns with trains. Lastly, one small hint to help you avoid a truly outdated

effect: don’t try to match the colour of the flowers with the groom’s outfit or with the bridesmaid’s dresses.

and friends can relax in our stress free environment while perusing displays, brochures, business cards, reception sites and albums all in the comfort of our lounge. FWC is the resource centre for brides to gather inspiration and information, and meet with the area’s top wedding vendors. With Fernie’s largest selection

of bridal books and the latest wedding magazines, Fernie Wedding Central is the perfect place to browse traditions and trends and gather inspiration for their big day! We want brides to have a place to come and get inspired; and to have endless wedding resources at their fingertips. Searching for vendors, venues and ideas on the internet can be overwhelming. With thousands of web entries, it’s hard to know which results are relevant. All the resources in our lounge are local and relevant - and a bride can feel secure knowing that the

vendors she meets through FWC are all known and trusted businesses. Instead of searching for hours on the internet for caterers, emailing each one and requesting menus, waiting for them to respond - we want a bride or groom to be able to come into FWC, pick up the caterer binder and have it all in front of them. FWC is committed to providing brides with expert advice and guidance. There is never a cost to brides for this service and never any obligation to use any of the in house vendors. PHOTO: Submitted

Find a gown

they all will love A little patience can help a bride-to-be select bridesmaids gowns that are flattering to all the members of her bridal party. PHOTO: Kyle Hamilton

Size matters The body shapes and sizes of the women in your bridal party will be different, and this should be kept in mind when selecting a gown style and cut. There are certain dress shapes that are universally flattering, such as A-line. Try to avoid gowns that are extremely form-fitting, as only a few of the bridesmaids may be able to pull off this look successfully. The remainder could be left feeling selfconscious and uncomfortable. Plus, form-fitting clothing will be restrictive and can be difficult to move around in -- particularly considering the gown will be worn for an entire day. Flattering Colour As a bride you may have a colourscape in your mind for the wedding. But what looks good in table linens and

flowers is not always the right choice for clothing. Take the skin tones and hair colours of your bridesmaids into consideration before choosing a dress. Green- and yellowhued dresses may not look nice on women with olive skin tones, while very pale colours may wash out women with fair skin. Those with dark skin may need a brighter-coloured dress. Price Tag It is an honour to be asked to be part of a bridal party, but that honour can be very expensive. The bridesmaids are expected to pay for their wardrobe, hair styling, and makeup, as well as parties and gifts for the happy couple. As a courtesy to the women who already will be investing a considerable amount to be a part of your wedding, make every effort to select a gown that is affordable.

Custom music for your special day

M

ike Pecora took a passion for music and spun it into a thriving business which takes him to weddings all over the Kootenay region of British Columbia as part of Elite Sound and Light. Known as DJ SlickMick when he plays music, Pecora started DJing at parties and celebrations at the age of 13. “A good friend of mine who lived in Golden was doing something similar to what I was doing. He was my sister’s boyfriend at the time and I was the irritating little brother who would hang out and flash his lights for him,” he said. When the friend moved out of town, Pecora borrowed $1,500 from his parents and bought himself two cassette decks, amplifiers and speakers. “I rented a hall one weekend here in town and held my very first teen dance. I was only 13 and haven’t looked back since.” On the night of his first show, he paid back his parents the money he had borrowed from them and was hooked on the job. Over the years, Pecora has worked house parties, local bars, and then started doing weddings. “I have built up my system to where I am now rolling to big shows with two trailers to haul all of my gear that could be needed,” he said. “’I can do anything’

applies because I have done everything. I have literally done it all because I have been doing this for so long,” he said. “Right from a basic system with a rental P.A. system, to doing karaoke and videos. I can support a wedding by rolling in with a portable stage. The band shows up and I set them up while playing music in between their sets.” Pecora added that if people want to have a vinyl theme to the wedding he can spin records if it is requested, or he can do

everything through digital music as well. As for why he enjoys the wedding side of his business, Pecora explained that the days are always fun, and you just never know what you are going to be asked to do. “Weddings are fun. Everyone is in a good mood and everybody looks good. It is positive from the start of the day,” he said. “Whatever comes into their minds I am willing to build packages with them.” He explained that he has played music in chain mail for a wedding as he was fine with it. “It was a challenge because it was heavy but it looked good for the setting.” Pecora is also a well-known local singer, and has even been asked to perform songs at weddings in the past. “I sang the bride and groom’s song at a wedding last summer. They had been married in Vegas and had the party in Golden. I came out for the first song and sang them an Elvis tune in full costume.” Pecora said he does everything he can to make every wedding a unique experience, and wants to add a different atmosphere to the weddings. For anyone who would like to learn more about the Elite Sound and Light you can go to the company’s Facebook page to see photos from previous events or www.elitesoundandlight.ca. PHOTO: Submitted

Baked alaska, cherries jubilee, apples flambe ... these are foods that might provide a show, but the cost of that show may not be worth it in the end. * Raw food: Clams on the halfshell or sushi-grade tuna may seem like good ideas, but keep in mind that it is hard to ensure quality when feeding 200 people at the same time. Foods that require special refrigeration or immediate service for freshness are best left for other occasions. Don’t risk food poisoning on a room full of people unless you want your wedding to be remembered for stomach

cramps. * A long, sit-down meal: Two or three courses is fine, but if guests have to sit through a never-ending parade of courses, that limits their ability to mingle and have a good time. * Anything too elaborate: The faster servers can get food out to guests the better. If they have to sit there piping mashed potato roses on dishes or assemble intricate canapes, the delay might not be worth the presentation. And remember, the more bells and whistles, the higher the price tag. * No food at all: Whether your wedding is small or grand in scale, guests will expect some sort of food. Be sure to have some butler-passed hors d’oeuvres or some well-placed pickings for guests to grab while mingling.

WHAT NOT TO SERVE AT A WEDDING Couples often fret over what to serve their guests at the reception, and rightfully so. Reception costs can comprise a majority of the wedding-day budget. Makeup fit for a star

Treat yourself to a complete professional makeup for a truly polished look.

A

picture perfect wedding begins and ends with a clearly defined look and style. Everything, from the décor to your makeup, can be orchestrated in detail so that your personal tastes and flair are remembered by all your guests and in your photo album. Treating yourself to a professional makeup session will ensure that you shine just the way you want to on this beautiful day. Make an appointment with a professional cosmetician as early as possible and be sure to plan a trial session to avoid any disappointment the morning of your wedding. Before then, keep in mind the basic beauty secret for good skin: drink lots of water, gently exfoliate to get rid of dead skin, and moisturize the skin morning and night. If you prefer to do your own makeup, choose products that will last and are

water resistant. Opt for a foundation with a natural finish and add a light touch of matte powder that will keep the shine off your nose in photographs. Choose a natural lipstick and a light touch of blush for your cheeks. The key to looking stunning and incandescent is in not overdoing it. Invest in a makeup setting spray that will help you avoid having to do touch-ups during the day. If one of your goals is to knock your bridegroom off his feet, you might want to indulge in the latest trend: false eyelashes. It is even possible to have professionally applied eyelash extensions! These will give you the look of a star, and all you’ll have to do is touch up with a bit of eye liner and a few brushes of a pearly eye shadow. With extensions, you’ll also be able to avoid those hideous mascara streaks when you shed a few tears of happiness.

Get your guests involved Beat wedding-goer boredom blues with post-ceremony and pre-reception activities.

W

hat makes a wedding memorable and special is the people. The bride and groom, and the wedding party of course, but it’s being surrounded by close friends and family that will make the day perfect. But being a wedding guest can sometimes be a bit unexciting. For that empty time between the ceremony and reception, guests are often left to fend for themselves. This can lead to having too many drinks during cocktail hour, or even worse, boredom! Make the effort to give the people who mean enough to you to score an invite to the big event something to do during those inevitable lulls in the action. In the East Kootenay, the beautiful views provided by the great outdoors can often be incorporated into a wedding-goer activity. Send your guests on a quick and scenic walk – keep in mind their wedding attire won’t likely accommodate more than a stroll. Set up stations through trees or a field where they can answer fun trivia questions about the bride and groom. Send them out with a map, and be sure to include a few fun party favours to help inspire them. Compile all of the guests’ answer cards towards the end of the night for a great guest prize, or simply read out the answers for fun.

*Set Up an Activity Area For an active group of little ones, consider creating an area for activities like ping-pong, air hockey, basketball, hula hoops or jump ropes. *Create a Craft Area Turn one room into an arts-andcrafts centre. Have a colouring contest, with prizes for the most

• Why not use a Wishing Tree? These are a great idea and a fun add-on or alternative to a guest book. You can make them from twigs which are arranged in clear vases, perhaps spray them gold or silver, or the colour of your wedding theme. Use lovely luggage labels printed with wishes that your guests can write their own special wish for you and then tie them to the tree. If you’re not feeling creative or crafty, your florist can easily create one for you. • If your location offers up plenty of outdoor open space, take advantage of it and set up some outdoor activities for your guests. Traditional backyard games like croquet, bocce ball, and horseshoes are fun for everyone and involve minimal setup.

What to do WITH KIDS *Hire a Professional Why not entertain the tots with a professional performer? Consider hiring a clown and/or face painter.

OTHER FUN WAYS TO INVOLVE YOUR GUESTS:

colourful drawings. Supply beads for necklaces they can take home. *Build a Sandbox Build a huge sandbox - you provide the sand, the buckets, shovels and sifters. They supply the fun! *Run Them Ragged Set up races. Hire a babysitter to run the games. Old-fashioned threelegged race, a one-foot hop, pass the egg-on-the-spoon relay. Be sure to have prizes on hand and make sure that everyone is a winner.

• Photo booths are gaining more and more popularity at weddings and give guests a chance to ham it up for the camera. You can bring in a real photo booth, or keep it simple and have your photographer shoot against a neutral background. Be sure to bring in lots of props for your guests to dress up in and have fun with. These goofy snapshots can make for great casual and candid memories of your night, and the prints can be great additions to thank-you cards.

Wedding guest attire - what to wear For an important event such as a wedding, it is absolutely essential to dress in an appropriate manner and appear well-groomed.

is to forgo casual clothing and bright colours, like those flashy Hawaiian shirts, unless specified!

H

Usually there are hints that will offer you ideas about the formality of the wedding.

owever, it isn’t always easy to make the right choice for these occasions, especially because of the great variety of styles that blur the boundaries between casual and formal. For women, there is one golden rule to follow: never wear a white dress. The bride should be the only person to dress in this colour; for someone else to wear it would show very poor manners, as if they were trying to steal the show. Provocative styles, such as very short, tight dresses with plunging necklines, should also

be avoided. Dresses made of a silky fabric are classics, and a light woven wool is alright, but avoid knits and worn looking fabrics. Long dresses are not obligatory, but hemlines should never go too high — a dress cut just above the knee is the most appropriate choice. For men, a long-sleeved shirt tucked inside the pants with a belt and a tie is a basic courtesy. Smart pants in a dark colour complete the outfit. Wearing a sports jacket or suit jacket will depend on the type of wedding you’ve been invited to. The important thing

• Look at the invitation. Typically the invitation will set the tone of the wedding. • Consider the location of the ceremony and reception. Chances are if the couple is being married on the beach they won’t expect women to wear an evening gown or gents to wear tails. • Take your cues from the bride and her wedding party. If you’ve heard that the bride will be wearing a cathedrallength veil and elaborate

wedding gown, chances are she’s going for formal. If you know the bridesmaids are wearing sarongs and flip flops, it’s probably a casual affair. • Don’t be afraid to ask. Call the bride or groom, or their parents, and inquire as to what type of atmosphere it will be. The following are not appropriate to wear to a wedding. • Black to a daytime wedding. • Any form of jeans. • Anything torn, dirty or illfitting. Don’t forget that this is the bride and groom’s day, not an occasion to try to stand out from the other guests.

hen deciding upon a honeymoon destination, pick a location that both of you will enjoy visiting. If you have a wide range of interests, choose a spot that offers a variety of activities to appeal to you both. Your travel agent can give you some suggestions and offer ways to meet your budget and

According to most travel agents, Hawaii, the Poconos, Niagara Falls, the Caribbean Islands and Florida are among the most popular spots for honeymooners. Cruises of any type are also favourites.
