very centimeter is like a little piece of powder heaven. We get a lot of that in Fernie. With an annual snowfall of over 37 feet (1,110 cms) and a ski hill five minutes from town with ski-in ski-out accommodations at the ski hill base, Fernie is the place to explore during the ski season. Wax those two planks or board, get your goggles and your snorkel on a big cm day and carve sweet lines in the fluffy white stuff. Rolling Stone Magazine voted Fernie as the “Coolest ski town in North America” and locals know that last season there were 1,110 great reasons. There is lots to explore with various levels of terrain at Fernie Alpine Resort. Rated one of the top five resorts in Canada, Fernie Alpine Resort has 10 lifts, five alpine bowls with tree skiing and a vertical drop of 3,550 feet.

nowshoeing is becoming more and more popular and it’s no secret why. It’s an activity suitable for all ages and requires very little skill – if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Not only is it enjoyable, but it is good for you too. Snowshoeing burns three times more calories than walking and is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health. Alone or in a group, you can travel at your own pace, getting your entire body moving and all of your muscles working. You’ll barely notice how much exercise you’re getting! The laidback winter activity is a great way to experience Fernie’s extensive network of summer mountain bike trails while they’re covered in a blanket of snow. Soft, quiet steps float through powder as you follow glittering,

snow-covered trails and discover another side of Fernie. Strap on your shoes and head up to Island Lake Lodge for a beautiful walk around the lake. Book a tour with one of the many local guides, or try some discovering of your own up Coal Creek Road. Why not pack a picnic and take your pick of the mountains located just a few minutes out of town? Enjoy the serenity and amazing views found at Fernie Alpine Resort, Mt. Fernie, or Mt. Hosmer. Snowmobiling With plenty of terrain to explore, Fernie is the perfect launching pad for highpowered snowmobiling adventure. If you have your own sled, the Fernie Snowmobile Association can tell you about regional trails and local snowmobiling events. Rent a sled or book a guided tour but before you head out, it is strongly advised that you carry safety gear and have taken a course in avalanche safety. www.ferniesnowmobile.com

he Fernie Snowmobile Association is encouraging all ages and abilities to bundle up and try out something a little different on the snow. With properly marked trails that are groomed up to three times a week, a new staging area with plenty of room to unload and snowmobiles available for rent with pick up and delivery as an option, there is no reason for beginners to miss out on the opportunity to experience the backcountry safely on a snowmobile. “Our Coal Creek trail is easily accessible, well maintained and it provides access to our new safety warm-up cabin,” said Paul Kramer, past

President of Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA). “After your stay at our new cabin, one can continue on utilizing our ‘new’ family friendly trail that provides safe access to the FSA’s other warm up shelter, the Wranglers Cabin. You don’t need to be a member to ride the trails, and you certainly don’t need to be an expert.” The FSA charges $15 to use the trails for nonmembers. Trail use is included if you are an FSA member. A trail map can be purchased at most of the FSA’s corporate sponsors, such as the Stanford Inn, Park Place Lodge, Smitty’s, Best Western Plus, 7-Eleven, and Ghostrider Motorsports on Shadow Road as well as other

locations around Fernie. The map has numbers correlating with signs along the trail to help navigate your way. “It is really easy to follow the trail and there are also some great places to stop off and enjoy the scenery,” said Paul. “Firewood and a barbecue are provided at both locations for your enjoyment. The not-for-profit FSA has fun events throughout the winter to get people involved, such as the poker run and drag races during the annual Griz Days festivities, raising money for charitable causes. They also try to host monthly family oriented events.” Ghostrider Motorsports has FSA memberships on hand that can be purchased Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Membership fees, trail conditions, FSA events and a grooming schedule can all be found at www.ferniesnowmobile.com. Their corporate sponsors can also be found on FSA’s website. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Paul. “We want to encourage people to join the other 150 FSA members so they too can enjoy all that the FSA provides.” All sledders please be aware of active logging this winter down the Flathead Valley. Pay attention to the posted signs.

Trail Highlights Morrissey

Situated approximately 15 minutes south of Fernie. Offers a large staging area and joins the Coal Creek trail network. Reopened for this year.

Coal Creek

Easily accessible, head up to the Minnesota Flats from the Coal Creek staging area just east of town. This staging area can be used to access many ungroomed routes that push deep into the mountains to the east.

Hartley Pass

Another trail climbs up and over Hartley Pass from a staging area just a few minutes north of town. Note that chains may be required for vehicles hauling trailers into this area. Large trailers are not recommended as the access road is steep and single lane in many areas

Fer nie is fortunate enough to have four avalanche rescue teams on standby at all times.

ach rescue team has completed extensive training over the course of at least two years. Prospective search dogs are selected between six months and two years of age, and are chosen based on a variety of personality attributes – including their willingness to have fun! “The initial stages of training includes lots of games of tug of war and hide and seek,”

explains Jennifer Coulter, who works with ‘Pika’ as a rescue team. “We make the search something that’s really fun for the dog… they start out searching for us in a pretty easy place, like behind a tree, then gradually the training builds up to finding something more difficult.” As the dogs become more focused on searching for human scent, an item (such as a sweater that has been slept on for a few days) will be buried under snow and then left overnight to minimize any other clues as to its whereabouts. The dogs’ keen sense of smell allows them to detect a nearby item and hone into an accurate location as the scent becomes stronger. They indicate where the item is by digging and, in a rescue situation, it is at this point that the handlers take over the search. In training, the dogs are rewarded with a game of tug of war after they have successfully found the item, which reinforces their willingness to complete the task. As with other working animals, it is important to respect the dogs by not approaching or petting them without checking with their handler first. Dogs can be easily hurt by edges on skis or snowboards, so if you see a team, remember that it’s best to watch from a comfortable distance. Training and demonstrations will be conducted over the season, so keep your eye out for the opportunity to see the dogs enjoying their work. Legends

You might have noticed that Fernie locals love a good story. Whether it’s an explanation for our awesome 37-feet of average annual snowfall or an eerie shadow that appears on the side of a mountain, Fernie has some legends that have become common knowledge of the town. The Ghostrider Although you won’t be able to see it at the moment, each sunny summer evening presents a shadow against the face of Mount Hosmer. Legend has it that in the early days of settlement, founder William Fernie noticed a necklace of black stones being worn by the daughter of a local tribal Chief. Fernie courted the young princess until he had learned the location of the stones – which were, of course, coal – at which point he promptly decided to stop seeing her. The tribe was furious, and their medicine woman placed a curse upon the valley. The town suffered from fire, flood and mining disasters, causing residents to fear that the curse was real. While a public ceremony officially lifted the curse in 1964, the ghost of the jilted princess on horseback with her father next to her still appears to this day.

The Three Sisters Faced with a choice of three beautiful maidens to make his bride, a young Indian Chief was finding it difficult to come to a decision. The older Chiefs turned to the gods to help him, unaware that such indecision was considered a terrible sin. The young Chief’s punishment was to be turned into a mountain so that every day he would be forced to look at what he couldn’t have. The maidens were so grief-stricken that they prayed to be turned into mountains as well, to which the gods obliged. Today, as you gaze upon the Three Sisters and Proctor Mountain, it is the young maidens and the Chief that you see. The Griz Have you ever wondered why Fernie is lucky enough to get such great snow? According to legend, the answer is thanks to a massive mountain man who lives high above the ski village. You can read all about the Griz and the annual festival that honours him on page 38. he Fernie Museum and Information Centre is a wealth of information to help find your way around the town and learn the history behind it all. Located on the corner of historical Victoria Avenue and Cox Street (491-2nd Avenue) museum staff will help you find your way. After five years of extensive planning and renovations, the Fernie Museum has been completely revamped to tell the history of Fernie. Display themes like “Work hard, play hard”, reflect how much and how little really has changed over the decades. You’ll find sensory experiences such as animal tracks you can touch and small boxes of wilderness smells and touch objects. There is inside information that locals would tell you like the local lore of the Ghostrider. Children and some adults will enjoy playing on the train table, crawling in the tunnel stomped with dinosaur foot prints or slowly opening the heavy original bank safe

The Five Faces of Fernie exhibit is an audio and touch screen display which focuses on each of the lives of Fernie pioneers Grace (Arbuckle) Dvorak, Sydney Hutcheson, Michael Phillips, Annie Balayti and Tom Uphill. Five Fernie writers recreated their life stories in words and an award winning videographer from Banff created the onscreen content. The exhibit includes hand written letters from town name sake William Fernie to his sister dating back as far as 1880 back when mail was received only six times a year. These letters are detailed descriptions painting a picture of the life as a pioneer. There were hardy folks living in the province then as there are now. The second storey holds a gallery with various exhibits throughout the year and can be rented for various occasions. A bl a st f rom th e past History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only 36 buildings survived, but thankfully fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the

Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over 30 miles of forest in the Elk Valley. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. All permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity. Offering a frequently changing list of nightly screenings as well as weekend matinees, the Vogue provides a warm and cozy break from the ski hill. Rest your tired legs and enjoy some popcorn while watching a flick. Fernie regularly hosts well-known musicians from around the country and the world, with several stages in the bars around town. Legend of the Griz

In the cold and cruel winter of 1879, a baby boy was born high in the mountains in the cave of a grizzly bear. When the bear finally awoke, the two engaged in a frightening battle for food and survival, causing an almighty noise to echo down the valley. When locals went to investigate, they were amazed to see a young boy, adorned in bear skins, leaping from rock to rock up the mountain.

Many years later, an enormous man was spotted by skiers at the summit of a mountain, with the bristly coat of a bear wrapped around his 6-foot wide shoulders. On his head was a bear hat, pulled down to shadow his eyes. As the group of skiers watched in awe, the man pointed his giant 8-foot musket towards the sky and fired, causing snow to bucket down. The townspeople began showing their gratitude to Griz through an annual festival, and although there have been no further confirmed sightings of him, Fernie continues to enjoy the best powder and packed skiing conditions in the Rockies.

Nordic Skiing You don’t have to be a downhill skier to enjoy winter in Fernie. From novice circuits to more advanced trails, Fernie has miles of Nordic ski trails to explore. Enjoy the amazing views from trails in town along the Elk River and the Golf Course or check out what Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake have to offer. There is something for everyone.

Fernie Golf Course

Maintained by the Fernie Nordic Society, the trails at the Fernie Golf Course are set for both classic and skate skiing. The majority of the eight kilometres of trail are flat and therefore are suitable for both beginner and intermediate skiers. Located right in town, it is easily accessed and can take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on which loops you choose. Island Lake Lodge

For those looking for more of a challenge, the road up to Island Lake Lodge offers a 12 kilometre climb up to the resort. Winding through old growth forest, the cat track offers gorgeous mountain views and several strenuous hill climbs. Once at the Lodge, there are additional trails around the lake. If you’d rather start your ski at the resort, they offer Winter Escape packages which include a return snowcat ride to the lodge, guided adventures, as well as a gourmet lunch. Fernie Alpine Resort

Fernie Alpine Resort offers over 10 kilometres of groomed trails for both skate and classic skiing. Overall the trails are suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers, however beginners will certainly enjoy the trail if they don’t mind walking up a steep climb now and again. his Junior B team enjoy an extremely devoted local following, with the Fernie Memorial Arena frequently packed full on game nights. Whether you are a lifelong hockey fan or brand new to the sport, a visit to a Ghostriders’ game is a must-do activity during your stay in Fernie. Crowds are known for their enthusiasm and unwavering support for the team, as shown by the deafening celebrations following a home goal. Named after the shadowy local legend that appears on Mount Hosmer throughout the summer, the Fernie Ghostriders formed in 1991 as charter members of the Southern Division in the former Rocky Mountain Junior

Hockey League (RMJHL). Since then, they have played in the America West Hockey League (AWHL), where they were the 2000 champions, and the North American Hockey League (NAHL) before finally joining the Kootenay International Junior League (KIJHL) in 2004. They have finished at the top of their division seven times since joining the KIJHL and have won the League championship twice (2006/07 and 2007/08). So come on down and share in the excitement of cheering on our favourite team in a fun-filled environment for the whole family. The City needs your assistance in order to facilitate snow removal from the roadways throughout Fernie and particularly in areas with increased numbers of residents parking on public streets. From November 1 to April 15 inclusive, the following Winter Parking Regulations are in effect per Consolidated Streets and Traffic Bylaw #1400:

Alternate Parking

Alternate parking allows the plows to clear back snow to the boulevards on alternating days and continue snow removal operations after a snowfall. Remember both sides of the street will of course be plowed, and unfortunately cars parked on the street will be plowed in. Plowing operations generally start at 4:00 am and run until 4:00 pm so please be sure you are parked on the correct side of the street during these hours. Ensure your vehicle is parked correctly and avoid being towed! • NO parking permitted on Monday,
