WELCOME to Fernie

W

inter, a time to reflect, a time for comfort, a time for family and friends to gather and a time of hope with a new year upon us. Fernie is just about the best place on earth to be in winter, the mountains covered in fresh snow, the downtown decorated in lights, kids building snowmen, fans cheering for the Ghostriders, everywhere you go there is something to do or see. From our very own world renowned ski resort to the local shops that line our beautiful main street there is something for locals and tourists alike. Fernie is not only known for its epic snowfalls, it is also known for its close proximity to the local coal mines. Mining is a major part of our livelihood and offers the opportunity for a great lifestyle to those who make Fernie their home. People come from all over the world to enjoy our fresh powder each year but Fernie is much more than just snow. It’s full of rich heritage and a booming arts culture. Check out the Fernie Museum or catch an event at the Arts Station for a glimpse of Fernie beyond the legendary powder.

Folklore The Ghostrider During the summer evenings in Fer nie, when the light hits Mt. Hosmer in a certain way, a legend can sometimes be seen on the face of the mountain.

T

he Ghostrider – the shadow of what looks like a horse and a rider, is believed to be the shadow of an angry Ktunaxa Indian chief and his jilted princess daughter chasing William Fernie. As legend has it, William Fernie (1837-1921),

a Scottish prospector who founded the city, was courting the Indian Princess as a way to find out the source of the black stone she wore around her neck. Being a prospector, he recognized the stone to be coal. The Indian Chief agreed to reveal the location of the coal if Fernie agreed to marry his daughter. It is said that after the Chief shared the location of the coal, Fernie reneged on the deal, and as a result, a curse was placed on the Elk Valley. The curse, so it goes, would bring fire, flood and famine to the city. As luck would have it, the city burned nearly to the ground twice. The first fire came in 1904 then again in 1908. In 1916, the Elk River overflowed and flooded sections of the city, and in 1917 there was a mining disaster. The curse remained in place until Aug. 5, 1964, when members of the Kootenay First Nations gathered in the city for a ceremonial lifting of the curse. It was at that time that Chief Red Eagle and Mayor James White amended past wrongs by smoking a peace pipe, and the curse was lifted.

what makes

FERNIE GREAT Fer nie is a gem of a little town. Nestled into the Rocky Mountains, the town has a unique combination of activities, attitudes, culture and history that makes it great in it’s own way.

B

etween the loyal locals who love the area and the influx of travellers that want to experience it, Fernie is full of enthusiastic and friendly people that are all here for the same reason – for the love of Fernie.

The Winter:

Fernie knows how to do winter perfectly. With the cold weather comes a flood of eager

10 Winter 2015/2016 - Thefreepress.ca

travellers excited to experience the legendary snow and the annual 40 feet of snowfall that made Fernie infamous to snow lovers around the globe. There are ample activities available, from cat skiing to snowshoeing and curling, providing some kind of fun for everyone to enjoy. While a Fernie summer brings it’s own fun, it’s in winter that Fernie shines. Photo: @khphotograph

The Lifestyle:

The winter weather matches the town vibe – chill. The relaxed atmosphere lends itself well to the active lifestyles enjoyed by many in the town. Most businesses around town have a reputation of letting a large snowfall trump a day’s work – 20 centimeters or more, and it is time to play in the snow. Make a snowman or snow angels on the lawn, go skiing or snowboarding at Fernie Alpine Resort, or just take a walk down the river trail and count the snowflakes – basically any way to enjoy the outdoors.

Nightlife & Dining:

Dining out in Fernie is never boring, as there are a plethora of options to match any craving. Steakhouses and quality restaurants litter the downtown core, offering everything from fish tacos to pho soup and pizza. There is something to please even the pickiest of taste buds. Top off the night with a beverage at one of the local taverns, or visit one of the late night pubs, offering live music, refreshing drinks and great conversations. The Vogue movie theatre is another hub of entertainment, showing the latest Hollywood movies, and the

best indie films. Unsure of what’s good on a specific night? Ask a local – they’ll know what to do.

Shopping:

The shops and boutiques in Fernie offer everything from souvenirs to outdoor equipment, and everything in between. All of the latest fashions can be found at the boutiques downtown, while the sports stores can set anyone up with all that they will need to play outside. Don’t forget about the little trinkets and original artwork that can be purchased at one of the many art boutiques.

The Arts and Culture:

Besides being home to multiple galleries, Fernie also has a thriving arts scene. Musicians, bands, DJs and performers of all genres regularly stop in Fernie, providing a different kind of entertainment every week. The Fernie Museum and Heritage Library are hubs of knowledge, which provide a great place to learn for the afternoon or hunker down with a good book. The arts and culture scene is just as lively as the sport and lifestyle scene in Fernie!

Focused on Responsible Development Teck is North America’s largest exporter of steelmaking coal. Five of our six steelmaking coal operations are located in the Elk Valley. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable resource development. That commitment includes working to enhance biodiversity and to create benefits for the communities in the areas where we operate. Mission Statement

The Fernie Nordic Society is a community of skiers supporting first class cross-country skiing experiences. It is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization that aims to provide exceptional, safe and affordable cross-country ski opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The Society maintains and operates cross-country skiing only facilities in Fernie and provides skills development programs for both children and adults. Your annual membership or day use fees allow the continued maintenance and improvement of our trail system, please visit Fernienordic.com for more information.

Why dogs aren’t allowed on trails

We understand that many members love to cross-country ski with their four legged family members and we strive to include them where it is appropriate. The dike trail located behind the Golf Course and Island Lake Lodge are excellent dog friendly options. These areas are groomed when possible. Dogs are not allowed on the Golf Course trails or at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre because maintenance and grooming of these trails is a significant but vital expense that dramatically improves the cross-country ski experience. Additionally, at the Golf Course, the compaction of snow outside groomed trails (specifically on greens) and the unavoidable dog waste issue can severely ruin the course, even under the snow. Please respect these rules to ensure our ongoing positive relationship with the Fernie Golf & Country Club. Winter 2015/2016 - Thefreepress.ca

Arts & Entertainment When it comes to arts, culture and entertainment activities, there is no shortage in Fer nie. The arts scene is constantly buzzing with upcoming performances, gallery openings and a variety of presentations and lectures from guest speakers.

D

owntown Fernie is home to three different art galleries, including the Arts Station, the Arts Co-op and the new Eye of the Needle Gallery. The Eye of the Needle is operated by a mother and daughter duo – Sandra and Flo Barrett. The gallery has a focus on felting and ironwork, but also sells collections from a variety of local artists. Although the gallery is young, it has garnered a reputation, mostly due to the strong reputation of the Barrett’s artistry. Flo has won national awards for her work as a professional costume designer while Sandra teaches a variety of skills at the gallery. The Arts Station hosts regular performances from a variety of musicians and performers. It features a 100-seat theatre along with studio spaces and meeting rooms, making it an ideal spot for a cultural gathering of any type.

The Arts Co-op is a collective space, featuring the artwork of many local artists. From photographers to leather makers and jewellery

16 Winter 2015/2016 - Thefreepress.ca

designers, it can all be found at the Arts Co-op, making it the perfect place to find a trinket or souvenir from Fernie.

The Fernie Heritage Library is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day reading a fiction novel or learning about local history. The library regularly hosts speakers and writers, and the Booked! Writer’s Series regularly brings renowned authors to the area to talk about their recent works. A local favourite is the Vogue Theatre, playing recent Hollywood movies along with Indie Films and family-oriented entertainment. The owners of the Vogue Theatre keep their movies as fresh and new as their popcorn, offering two shows nightly, and late shows on the weekends. It’s a perfect place to rest your legs from a hard day on the hill. In September, the Vogue Theatre heightened its comfort level by installing new, high-end seats, making it the optimal spot to watch a good movie.

Dress best for the season

W

e all know to layer up with warm underwear and a waterproof shell before hitting the slopes or the trails. But here in the Elk Valley, we need to dress and prepare for the cold even if we are just taking a walk to the grocery store. Here is a list of ways to be prepared for the cold, every day, from October to April. • Loosen your boots. It’s tempting to wrap those cold feet in nice thick wooly socks and nice cozy, tight boots, but actually, it is better to allow some air to circulate to keep those tootsies warm. Wrap your toes up too tightly, and you risk constricting blood flow to your feet and making them feel even colder. Instead, opt for thinner wool or polypropylene socks and consider going up a shoe size for your winter footwear. • Waterproof your extremities. Choose boots, socks, gloves, and mittens that will keep moisture out while allowing perspiration to escape. Look for gloves with gathering at the wrist and socks with light binding around the band. If your boots and shoes are not already water-tight, you can weatherproof them yourself using a spray protectant or a beeswax product. • Select the right gloves for the job. Gloves with a “convertible” top can make it easier to rifle through the change in your pocket to pay for a coffee. These days, you can also find gloves with small plastic dots on the fingertips - perfect for dialling your cell phone! But you’ll need warmer gloves with some grip to them if you have to shovel your sidewalk or scrape the ice off of your windshield. Pull rubber cleaning gloves over the top of your usual gloves for traction if you’re in a pinch. To combat extreme cold, slip disposable hand warmers into your gloves. These packets, made with various compounds including iron, charcoal, salt, and water, take advantage of the natural reaction between those elements to create long-lasting, mellow warmth. • Choose wool. While cotton socks make sense in the summer, in cold weather they can be moisture traps that provide no warmth from

insulation. Since it’s thicker and more insulated, wool stays warmer. Even though wool absorbs moisture, it dries up quickly. Wool socks may not be too sexy, but they’ll protect your tootsies. • Protect against windburn by wrapping up your face with a scarf or even a ninjastyle balaclava. Slather protective moisturizer or petroleum jelly on your face to protect and stop your skin drying out. And don’t forget those vulnerable ears! Protect them with a hood, hat, headband or even earmuffs! • Don’t slip up! Those sidewalks are slippery. Avoid a cracked tailbone by keeping walkways and stairs cleared of snow and ice. Wear rubber soled shoes or boots and invest in some slip on, anti slip cleats to really give your feet some traction.

Snowmobiling in Fer nie

From Mild to Wild Fer nie is not lacking in terrain to explore. With a variety of mountain valleys surrounding the area, Fer nie provides optimal landscapes for a snowmobiling adventure.

I

f you own your own sled, the Fernie Snowmobile Association can help you with local trail updates and information on snowmobiling events. Sled rentals are available. But remember, while the mountains provide the ultimate playground, they can also be extremely dangerous. Make sure to check the snow and weather reports and that you have the proper equipment before heading out into the mountains. Looking for a new way to enjoy the winter vistas or see the backcountry sights? Try snowmobiling. The Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) helps numerous

people enjoy the outdoors every winter by maintaining groomed trails, enabling snowmobilers of all skill level to experience the beloved activity. The FSA is in works with the tenure landowners, logging company Jemi Fibre Corp. to gain access to local areas and logging roads, such as Coal Creek and Morrissey. Three years ago, the FSA built a new sledder’s cabin. Located roughly 17 kilometres south of Fernie in the Coal Creek area, the Rolling Hills cabin has all the amenities needed for sledders to enjoy a day trip and explore that area. There are no overnight stays allowed except

in an emergency situation. There is another cabin located in Ram Creek area, and the Wrangler’s Cabin is located in the Morrissey area. Firewood and barbeques are provided at the cabins. While you don’t need to be a member of the FSA to enjoy the trails, if you plan to spend more than four days out there, a membership could be a benefit to you. The FSA charges $20 per day for non-members to use the trails, all of the money collected going towards grooming the trails, maintaining proper signage and cabin upgrades. Memberships cost $80, and allows members unlimited access to all of the trails in the area along with having a voice in the Association and being an active member in the British Columbia Snowmobile Federation. The FSA operates as a non-profit organization and host events throughout the season, such as drag races in February. Memberships can be purchased at Ghostrider Motorsports and will soon be available online at Ferniesnowmobile.com. Trail maps are also available at Ghostrider Motorsports and Gearhub.

reathtaking views, fresh snow and stimulating exercise – what else is needed to make the perfect outdoor adventure. The Winter Wheezer combines all of those aspects with a race that captures nearly everything that is unique to Fernie.

A sister race of the Tears and Gears duathlon, the Winter Wheezer gives snow-lovers a chance to exercise their muscles. The event welcomes everyone to slide, glide and stride through the snow on cross-country skis and snowshoes. Race organizers are pondering adding a snow-bike aspect to the course, making it a multifaceted race. To complement the athletics are stunning views and snowcapped trees – the picturesque scenes that have made Fernie famous. The Winter Wheezer is designed to be a fun yet challenging course, catering to all ages and abilities. Young racers are encouraged to enter, often making for family-fun competition and with different courselengths for novice and younger racers.

To celebrate the race, participants are greeted with a fire at the base of the ski hill, allowing people to warm up while they swap race stories. For an outdoor adventure, featuring friendly people, sportsmanship, stunning scenery and finishing it off with the warmth of a fire, there is nothing more perfect than the Winter Wheezer.

chutes suitable for advanced intermediate to advanced skiers or boarders. There is a lead guide who navigates the line down the mountain, and a tail guide who points out the best lines and ensures that the group descends safely. Depending on the group and conditions of the day, you can expect to get eight-10 runs, which is approximately 10,000-12,000 metres of vertical drops for the day. Skiable terrain is dependent upon current weather conditions, group ability and safety. As with any climate controlled activity, some alterations to daily plans may be necessary to provide the safest experience possible for that day’s conditions.

Fer n ie Ro d & Gun Club

stablished in 1899, the Fernie Rod and Gun Club (FRGC) has been one of the longest running clubs in the province. The FRGC is dedicated to supporting target shooting and ethical hunting in the Elk Valley, providing lessons and training facilities to help their members hone their target shooting skills. Target shooting includes archery and hunting. Along with teaching proper target shooting techniques, one of the main missions of the FRGC is to promote a healthy environment and eco-system, allowing for the wildlife they hunt to thrive. They’re a dual-purpose organization, as they want to maximize the opportunities for fishing and hunting while encouraging and supporting a sustainable environment. This winter, the FRGC is continuing their youth archery programs at their indoor range located at the Elks’ Hall on First Avenue. They also offer Ladies’ Nights and promotional

nights throughout the season, and usually head outside when the snow starts to melt in late April or early May. The FRGC hold regular meetings, held on the second Monday of every month, which the public is welcome to join. For more information on membership opportunities or programs, visit the FRGC’s Facebook page.

The Great Griz Days

A

s told by local folklore, the townspeople of Fernie have the Griz to thank for the ample amount of powder that blankets the town every winter. In an effort to say thanks to the Griz, the town gathers for a community-wide festival. The three-day event, from March 4 to 6, takes over the entire town, with activities at Fernie Alpine Resort and in town. Many local businesses and organizations also pay their respects by joining in the festivities, making it a truly unique winter party.

Legend of the Griz:

According to the tale, in 1879 a little baby boy was born during one of the most intense and bitter winters. The baby was sheltered from the winter elements in a cave that belonged to a grizzly bear, high up in the mountains surrounding Fernie. It wasn’t long before he awoke the grizzly bear, who was hungry and angry. The following morning, when the town awoke,

they were eager to see what the commotion was on the mountain from the night before. One man looked up at the valley mountain and saw a boy, jumping from rock to rock, wearing a fur bear coat and hat. No one believed the man, and thought he was seeing things and making up grandiose tales. It wasn’t until two skiers spotted the mysterious boy that the townsman’s tale was verified – but according to the skiers, the boy had grown. They claimed that it was a man they saw, standing around 300 lbs., with bouldering sixfoot wide shoulders and sporting an eight-foot long musket. He was wearing a fur grizzly coat and hat, which was pulled down over his eyes. The awestruck skiers stood there, mesmerized, while the man shoved the giant musket into

the clouds, covering the mountains in a fresh white blanket of snow. Every year, the town of Fernie gathers for a three-day party in appreciation of the Griz, who is credited with making Fernie’s mountains the best place to ski in the Rockies.

Raging Elk Downhill Dummy:

If you want to see reindeer mannequins race down a steep slope, then there is no better event than the Raging Elk Dummy Downhill. Even though most racers typically crash, enthusiastic engineers enter their mannequins every year, sending them gliding (or bouncing) down the ski hill.

Extreme Griz

This is the most coveted award in Fernie, as it crowns the man or woman who most represents the legendary Griz. Participants sport all of the fur they can find, both in facial hair and in outerwear, competing for the titles by throwing axes and starting fires in the winter. The winner is crowned after the downtown parade.

Powder Pedal Paddle Thought relays were reserved for only the warmest months of the year? Not in this active community! To tie up the winter season, Fernie Alpine Resort hosts the powder pedal paddle relay every April, where teams of two to five people ski, bike, paddle and run their way into spring followed by a delicious dinner and an after-party in the evening. This extreme community event sees team members racing from the top of the mountain on skis and snowboards, speeding down the ski hill on a bike and ferociously pedaling into town, paddling a canoe or kayak up the bitterly cold Elk River toward the Fernie Alpine Resort access road and finally, dashing up the road to the finish line. Participants gather at the ski hill base at the end of the race for a barbeque and prizes. Weren’t fast enough to place? Not to worry, sometimes slow and steady does truly win the race! Prizes and bragging rights go out to all sorts of different humorous categories, including slowest and youngest.

The Skinny on Fat Bikes

I

n 1986, a bike with over-sized prototype tires rolled across the Sahara Desert. At the same time, Alaskan bike mechanics – looking for something to do during the long winter – started experimenting with new frame and fork geometries. Their goal: a bike that would take them the length of snowy Iditarod, from Knik to Nome. Fast forward to now. Rolling over compact snow on big, balloon-like tires is the new winter thing to do. Bike designs have evolved; accessories like over-booties and bar mitts make riding more comfortable in cold weather.

The sport is in a genuine growth spurt. People are catching on to the joy it offers. Mountain bike coach Kat Robinson describes getting fat, “It’s just so fun. It is great being able to be out biking on the snow. It makes me giggle because it is so easy to fall over! And you do fall over.” Fernie is a perfect place to try it. We have an extensive trail network, easily accessible from town. Multi-use trails at Fernie Alpine Resort, Montane and Island Lake are wide enough to accommodate groomed fat tire tracks running parallel to set Nordic tracks. Add in volunteers, the good work of the Fernie Trail Alliance, plus bike shops offering multiple fat options. All the spokes spin together. Fernie Bike Guides is offering two introductory fat tire weekend workshops this winter, as well as private instruction at any time. Discover how much fun snow biking can be with a Salsa Mukluk as a demo and experienced coaches to guide you. Find out more at Ferniebikeguides.ca Call 1-888-843-4885 to book.

Avalanche Awareness With the mountainous terrain that surrounds Fer nie, it’s no wonder that many feel the call of the wild and are tempted to explore them deeper. But with the excitement of exploration comes the risk of danger in the backcountry.

A

valanches are a huge concern in Fernie’s backcountry terrain, and before anyone ventures out into the woods, there are a few must-know essentials. Mary Clayton is the communications director at Avalanche Canada and encourages anyone inclined to venture into the backcountry to take the appropriate steps to ensure their safety. “Transceiver, probe and shovel – everybody in the party needs to have it and needs to know how to use it,” says Clayton, “You should practice your rescue skills and make sure that everything is in good working order. And you should not be going out into the backcountry unless you’ve had some training.” Clayton also advises to check Avalanche.ca for current weather and avalanche conditions in the south Rockies before going into the backcountry. The South Rockies Field Team

44 Winter 2015/2016 - Thefreepress.ca

posts regular updates about the snow conditions in the Lizard Range and other local backcountry favourites. To share information among skiers and hikers, the Mountain Information Network was created. MIN, as it is affectionately called, allows people to share information from the field, such as current conditions and snow quality, with each other. The information gets geo-tagged and allows other people to access that information. “Being able to access really localized information is going to make a big difference,” says Clayton. Avalanche Canada also has an app for convenient use. Backcountry equipment can be purchased at local retailers, such as Gearhub and the Guides’ Hut, while trail information can be found at Fernietrails.com.

Nice touque eh? If you’re new to Canada, you may have trouble understanding the locals. Here’s a guide to get you speaking the lingo. Canuck: A slang term for “Canadian” in the U.S. and Canada. It sometimes means “French Canadian” in particular, especially when used in the Northeast of the United States and in Canada. Adopted as the name of the National Hockey League team in Vancouver. Chinook: a warm, dry wind experienced along the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada. Most common in winter and spring, a chinook wind can result in a rise in temperature of 20 C° (36 F°) in a quarter of an hour. Cow town: A nickname for Calgary, Alberta. Refers to its roots as a hub of ranching, livestock trade and the Calgary Stampede or rodeo culture. deke: A word derived from decoy and used to describe a fake or feint intended to deceive a defensive player, often drawing that player out of position, usually in hockey, as in “I deked him out and scored.” double-double: a cup of coffee from Tim Hortons with two creams and two sugars. eh: a spoken interjection to ascertain the comprehension, continued interest, agreement, etc., of the person or persons addressed (“That was a good game last night, eh?”). May also be used instead of “huh?” or “what?” meaning “please repeat or say again.” Frequently misrepresented by Americans as A, or hey. May have originated from the French word “hein?”. forty pounder (forty ouncer) — a 40 oz. bottle of alcohol. hoodie: a hooded sweatshirt with or without a zipper that has a pocket in the front. Also referred to as a Bunny Hug in Saskatchewan. Kokanee: British Columbian name for a species of land-locked salmon (accent on first syllable). Also the name of a popular beer brewed two hours west of Fernie, in Creston, B.C. Kraft Dinner: Kraft macaroni and cheese. Sometimes called “Krap Dinner” or “KD”. loonie: Canadian one dollar coin. Derived

from the use of the loon on the reverse. lumber jacket: A thick flannel jacket either red and black or green and black favoured by blue collar workers and heavy metal/grunge aficionados. poutine: a dish of french fries (or chips) topped with cheese curds and covered with hot gravy. Originated in Quebec but is now popular across Canada. RCs: RCMP officers, especially patrolling the highway. Sasquatch: A legendary creature similar to Bigfoot or Yeti, from the Halqéméylem word “sesqac”. Popularized by the Kokanee Brewery as the thief of Kokanee beer. Snowbirds: a reference to people, often senior citizens, who leave Canada during the winter months to reside in southern states of the U.S. (particularly Florida.) Also the name of the Canadian Forces aerobatics team.

Tim’s, Timmy’s, Timmy Ho’s: Tim Hortons doughnut chain. toonie: Canadian two dollar coin. Modelled after loonie. Also spelled tooney, twooney, twoonie, or twonie. touque: a close-fitting woolen winter hat (sometimes spelled toque, which is assimilated from a different kind of hat, or touque). Akin to a stocking-cap, or knit cap. washroom: the general term for what is normally named public toilet or lavatory in Britain. The word bathroom is also used; the term toilet is generally considered somewhat indelicate in Canada and is avoided. wheels: A vehicle, usually a car. Tire is usually used when referring to the actual wheels “Where are your wheels parked?”.

Ask a local For the past decade, Donnie Trainor has called Fer nie home.

O

riginally from the East coast, Trainor got married in Fernie and bought a house here. He and his wife welcomed their first child earlier this year, and the young family plans on building their dream home next spring. Trainor said there’s a lot to do in this small mountain town year-round, but said winter is his favourite time of the year. We asked this resident what his favourite things to do in Fernie are, and here’s what he said. Favourite winter activities: snowboarding and cross-country skiing; for those who don’t want to be outdoors, the pool is always a good option. Favourite places to eat: Mugshots, Bean Pod and Loaf. Favourite place to get a drink: Brickhouse or Nevados for a couple of cocktails; to make a night of it or to see a band, the Northern is a great place for that. Trainor said Nevados is a must-see, and said the chef, Barrie Elliott, won Chopped Canada. “It’s one of the nicest decors in town and the menu is different. It’s a lot of tapas-style with

48 Winter 2015/2016 - Thefreepress.ca

fresh ingredients that’s reasonably priced.” Trainor said during the winter months, restaurants are always full, so if you are planning on heading out for dinner, be prepared to wait for a table or change your plans “on the fly”. There’s a bit of everything here, from sushi to South American and Indian and Vietnamese cuisine and more, he said. “Be prepared to go to two or three different places,” he said. “But that’s the nice thing about this town – there’s so many good restaurants that you can’t go wrong.” Trainor said the number one reason so many people move to Fernie is because of the snow. “When it snows here, it’s magical. Everyone will just kind of get the warm fuzzies when it snows,” he said. “We live in a playground.” But it’s not just the snow that keeps him here. “Another reason I love this town, probably the biggest reason, is the people. People are genuine here. People are hardworking, passionate and driven,” he said. “This town’s got a very positive vibe with lots of good people. You’d have to work hard to not have a good time here.”

A bl a st f rom th e past History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only 36 buildings survived, but thankfully fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames, allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over 30 miles of forest in the Elk Valley. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire are the building regulations that were

subsequently adopted. All permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity.

Fernie Chamber of Commerce

T

he Fernie Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization that is run by a volunteer board. Earlier this year, the Chamber hired a new executive director. Patty Vadnais took over the position full-time on May 1. With a background in non-profits and association work, Vadnais answered a job posting in the newspaper for the position of executive director, applied and was successful. “It was a nice fit,” she said. As the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, Vadnais’ job is to implement the strategic plan of the Chamber’s board of directors. The board has established a mission and a vision for the Chamber to strengthen commerce in Fernie, and to be the voice of business in Fernie, she said. “I work with our business community and make sure they are supported,” she said. “If they need a voice at City Hall, we can be a unified voice for that and work with City Hall to ensure that the business environment is healthy and that businesses want to

come here.” The current membership sits at approximately 260 businesses, Vadnais said, adding any business can apply to join. “We have a business classification, a nonprofit classification, a home-based business classification, and individuals can become members as well.” Vadnais said there are a number of benefits in becoming a Chamber member, adding it’s a great networking tool to get businesses talking to each other. The Chamber also hosts educational seminars to help improve issues that impact businesses, such as employee recruitment and retention. “Then there’s another side where we just help reduce the cost of business, and that’s through our Chamber insurance plan, which is great for small businesses,” she said. “Our group benefit package will also work for a single-employee business.” For more information, contact the Fernie Chamber of Commerce at 250-423-6868 or visit the website at Ferniechamber.com.
