WELCOME to Fernie

ou found us! Long recognized by locals as British Columbia’s best-kept secret, this is a title that Fernie can no longer claim. With the beauty of the town and the array of amenities that Fernie has to offer, the secret is out. From the bountiful powder at Fernie Alpine Resort to the amazing trail system throughout the area for cross-country skiers and fat bikers there is something for everyone. A wander through town will take you to some of the best coffee shops and restaurants anywhere. Whether your tastes lean toward authentic tacos, amazing sushi, fabulous Indian cuisine, or one of the best bagels anywhere, you will find it here. Fernie is home to some very talented artists whose work can be seen at the Arts Co-op and the Fernie Arts Station. Long before the secret of Fernie was revealed from beneath the powder, the roots of the town were deep in coal mining. A visit to the Fernie Museum will help you discover the rich history in mining, and the subsequent advent of tourism. There is nothing quite as breathtaking as Fernie in the winter. The beautiful downtown core lights up like a winter wonderland with a backdrop of the snow-covered Rockies. If you are fortunate enough to be here at Christmas, it truly is something magical. Come and enjoy everything that Fernie has to offer, immerse yourself in all that is winter, and see why the secret was just too big to keep!

Powder Highway The southeast cor ner of B.C. is home to the Powder Highway, a route known as 95A, that links many mountains and skiing communities together.

E

very winter thousands of nomads wander through B.C. in search of one thing - epic powder turns. They travel from all corners of the world leaving family and friends behind all just to feed their powder addiction. There is arguably more great skiing in this part of B.C. than the rest of the world. And more great snow. Whether you’re into backcountry touring or cruising the resorts, you will not be disappointed on the Powder Highway. Within a few hours drive, you have your choice of resorts and mountain ranges all known for crazy

amounts of snow. Because of our amazing snowfall and terrain, Fernie gets its fair share of powder hounds searching for THAT day, THAT run, or THAT snowfall. They check the weather forecasts incessantly, have every ski resort added to their web “bookmarks”, and would rather buy new skis than a radiator for their ‘87 Tercel. If you are new to the area, check out our map for some great road trip options. We wish you all the best in your search for great snow. No doubt you’ll find it on the Powder Highway.

El Niño

A phase of warm weather, this is most often associated with warm ocean waters that develop in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific.

La Niña

The counterpart to El Niño which is a phase of colder weather, often associated with the cooling of ocean waters.

What does it mean?

Nothing! El Niño or La Niña - neither come with a guarantee. Instead they “stack the deck” in favour of a certain type of winter. After two years of El Niño weather - which was a large factor contributing to making the 2015/16 winter one of the warmest on record for the area - snow sport enthusiasts are looking forward to the La Niña shift. In the late fall of 2016, Environment Canada predicted that the ocean will return to its regular temperature, but will continue to cool and La Niña will quickly take over. La Niña is good news for snowlovers in Fernie, the Elk Valley and much of B.C. Cooler weather typically brings higher than average snowfall winters especially after an El Niño.

Dan McDonald

Masters of

“The one thing everyone can agree on is that Dan had the original vision of catskiing at Island Lake.” Bears Above the Valley (Oolichan Books, 2013). Dan McDonald - 1951-2015.

A

s a child, D a n McDonald read the journals of Canada’s famous explorer and mapmaker David Thompson with excitement, but also disappointment. “I felt like I was born 200 years too late and missed all the fun,” he told Log Home Living in 2010. Dan McDonald was born in New Westminster in 1951, and raised in Surrey, B.C. In 1973 together with his wife Susan, he relocated to Fernie where he became proficient in the industrial construction business. From all accounts, he was an outdoorsman, a visionary and a family man. When he was not working, spare moments were spent exploring the mountains with family and friends. He loved to fish, hunt, ski and snowmobile. These passions inspired him to build the original Island Lake Lodge in Fernie. In 1985, McDonald, together with Rod Pendlebury had the idea of ski touring and cross-country skiing around Island Lake and the Lizard Range. Always in search of the perfect location for this, wife Susan shared in Bears Across the Valley, that it was on a family picnic to Island Lake in 1986 that she asked Dan “Why don’t you build your cabin here?” And so it began. Through a leasing agreement with Shell Canada, the land was acquired, and McDonald was one of the original four investors who combined

10 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

their expertise and skills to build Island Lake Lodge, the second cat skiing operation in British Columbia. Each bringing their own skill set to the project, Dan McDonald as the construction manager teamed up with Rod P e n d l e b u r y, master craftsman log builder, Dale Bowman, electrician and Bob Langfield a Vancouver contractor. Together, in the old growth forest setting they built Bear Lodge, the original structure at Island Lake, in 1988. In 1995, they were able to purchase the 7,000-acre property outright and Red Eagle Lodge was built. In an interview with Log Home Living in 2010, McDonald spoke of his plan for conservation of the area where 800-year-old cedars reach for the sky. “When you look around, you see very little impact on the land, “he explained. “It is just as beautiful as it was the day we arrived. Our snow roads melt and disappear in the spring so it looks like no one has been there. Year after year, we are able to keep doing the same thing over again. We are using the elements of the earth - the water, the woods, the stone - and it can work.” A leader in the Cat and Heliski Industry, and a director of the Canadian Avalanche Association, Dan McDonald was a man with a dream, whose passion and perseverance and respect for nature changed the landscape of the valley without really changing it at all. Heiko Socher

A true visionary, Heiko Socher is the man behind the mountain. Heiko Socher - 1930 - 2016.

A

rriving in Canada in 1966 from his homeland in Germany, Heiko attended the University of British Columbia, and worked as a forester. His foresight was directly responsible for evolving Fernie Snow Valley from a T-Bar operation in 1966. In the mid-60’s ownership of the local ski hill was split between n u m e r o u s shareholders, however the operation was losing money. Seizing the opportunity, Socher acquired 30 per cent of the company shares and became general manager. “Utilizing his forestry knowledge, he made money selling trees cut from the ski hill using bulldozers and backhoes,” reported S. Threndyle in an article on SnowsportsCulture. com. “While Socher designed the log cabin base lodge, his wife, Linda, ran the ski school and ski shop. More trails were cut and lifts added. Socher ploughed the profits back into the mountain as the skiing public began to demand better grooming, faster lifts and a more refined experience. Many of his plans for greater expansion have been realized since Fernie’s sale to Resorts of the Canadian Rockies in 1997,” Threndyle wrote. Through hard work and determination, Socher developed Snow Valley Ski Resort into a world-class resort. Socher possessed a knack for marketing as well, which helped Fernie establish its place in the top ski resorts in North Photo: Free Press files

America. As the mastermind behind Fernie’s mascot, Heiko sealed legendary status for “The Griz,” and in doing so, for himself as well. His subsequent use of “The Griz” to market Fernie to the world is indicative of his genius. In 1997, Socher retired from his position at Fernie Alpine Resort. This, however was not to be the end of his signature on the Fernie landscape. Finished in 2003, The Mountain Lakes Trail (or Heiko’s Trail as it’s known locally) was built by Heiko himself. Called “the most epic of hikes in Fernie and definitely one activity to add to your ‘to do’ list,” by Tourism Fernie, this 21 km hike gains 1200 vertical metres over two mountain passes. Heiko also left his mark on the Fernie downtown core, with projects such as 901 Fernie as well as The Castle on 1st, of which he said in an interview with Kootenay Business, “I’m glad I managed it.” I’ve enjoyed creating something. There have been quite a few struggles through the four or five years that it took to create this landmark in Fernie, but now it’s almost complete. I guess it’s something to be proud of.” A humble, hardworking man with a vision, Heiko Socher is a name that will live on in the mountains of Fernie, just as surely as “The Griz” does. Ski & Snowboard In Fernie HISTORY OF SKIING

Skiing began long before the first chairlift. This was true in Fer nie as well, with the first handle tow lift being installed in the 1950’s by the Fer nie Ski Club. The lift towed skiers up Mt. Proctor and picked up winter enthusiasts just behind the Fer nie Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre which is on the North East end of Fer nie. Since then Fer nie has celebrated more than 65 years of deep, snorkel skiing.

Touring Warming Huts And Cabins Montane Cabin - The Fer nie trails and Ski Touring Club added a warming hut in the Montane Trail network in the fall of 2016. This area is groomed for XC skiing and winter cycling. The warming hut is open to the public and features an outdoor fire pit, enjoy! Thunder Meadows -This legendary cabin is what formed the Elk Valley Ski Touring Association, which has grown into the Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring Club. The hut itself was built in 1993, after two other huts either bur ned down or were decommissioned. In the 70’s and 80’s ski tourers regularly explored what is now Island Lake and Fer nie Alpine Resort in the Lizard Range. The original hut was well used and enhanced the potential and popularity for ski touring in the area. This cabin has booking requirements. To book the cabin a Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring membership is required, which costs $25 for a lifetime membership, and a member of Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring must be present in each user group. Bookings can be made at the Guide’s Hut (671-2nd Ave, Downtown Fer nie, 250-423-3650) and are not confirmed until paid for. Bookings may be cancelled in the event of a HIGH Avalanche Hazard.

Tunnel Creek - Built in December 2011, a light-weight hut and outhouse were flown to 5,600 feet and onto their foundations making for the original hut. Four years later, in the fall of 2015, a large addition was completed on the original hut. This added day-use functionality with a wood stove and kitchen. The original cabin continues to be the sleeping area for booked guests. The hut is located in Tunnel Creek in the Lizard Range. The hut is booked through the Guide’s Hut (671-2nd Ave, Downtown Fer nie, 250-423-3650) and is $80 per night for a maximum of six people. At least one person in the booking party must be a member of the Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring Club. Bookings are confirmed when paid for and can be cancelled in the event of a HIGH Avalanche Hazard.

Fernie’s Nordic Ski Trails Fer nie’s ski terrain doesn’t stop when the descent ends. For those who are gravity challenged, Fer nie offers many Nordic ski trails.

F

rom a first time skier to long time veteran, classic or skate, getting out on some corduroy shouldn’t be a problem. Over 15 kilometres of trails are professionally cared for by the Fernie Nordic Society. Trail conditions and grooming updates can be found at fernienordic.com.

Elk Valley Nordic Centre

Getting there: From downtown Fernie follow Highway 3 south, turn right on Mt. Fernie Park Rd. The main parking lot is at Mount Fernie Provincial Park. Trails: Varying difficulty, “green” to “black” with a growing trail network of nine kilometres. The trails were professionally designed for Nordic skiing.

14 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

The Elk Valley Nordic Centre recently completed a warming hut that is located at the trailhead. When on duty, a trail ambassador can help you plan a route. Maps and information on the network are also available.

Fernie Golf and Country Club

Getting there: Located in Fernie, this network is easy to access. From downtown Fernie head north along Highway 3, turn right on 15th Street, left on 6th Avenue and then right on Fairway Drive. Fairway Drive ends at the Fernie Golf & Country Club (FG&CC) clubhouse. Trails: 12 kilometres of groomed track loop through open terrain and forests. This network is ideal for new skiers or those seeking limited elevation. Photo: Kyle Hamilton

These trails are groomed by both the FG&CC and the Fernie Nordic Society. The clubhouse offers all the amenities a day of skiing needs.

Montane Nordic & Multi-Use Trails

Getting there: From downtown Fernie take Pine Ave. to Coal Creek Rd. A turn around is located on the right hand side of the road. This is one of the main access points for the Montane network. Trails: This network is extensive, but only 10 kilometres of trails are groomed. Groomed trails are rated as “green in difficulty. The network offers varying terrain from open trails to more challenging forested trails. Extras: Some trails will lead skiers to the Castle Mountain network. A warming hut is located on the far end (four kilometres) of the trail network. Note: Many of the trails in this network are non-motorized multi-use, therefore fatbikes, snowshoes, and dogs may also be seen in the area. As these are not Nordic specific trails be sure to watch for traffic!

Fernie Alpine Resort

Getting there: Follow Highway 3 south from Fernie and turn right on Fernie Ski Hill Road. The road will take skiers to the main village.

Nordic skiing starts at parking lot 4. Trails: 14 kilometres of groomed and trackset trails await skiers. The trails range from beginner to intermediate for both disciplines. Lessons and rentals are available at the resort village. The village also has all the vacation amenities needed.

Fernie Nordic Society

T

he Fernie Nordic Society continues to improve the trails and infrastructure available for nordic skiing in Fernie. This winter, FNS will maintain groomed trails at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (EVNC) and Fernie Golf and Country Club. Both of these facilities are for skiing only, with the exception of the new ‘Boom Creek Trail’, accessible from the Fernie Alpine Resort side of the Elk Valley Nordic Centre, where snowbikes, snowshoes and dogs are permitted. EVNC and the Golf Course are groomed for both skate and classic skiing. This winter, skiers

will enjoy some new features at the EVNC, including a newly completed warming hut and an informative sign trail. A significant amount of trail work has been completed this summer to improve the ski experience at EVNC. Keep up to date with all of their progress online at www. fernienordic.com or through their social media channels: Facebook.com/FernieNordicSociety or twitter.com/fernieNordic In partnership with Tourism Fernie, a comprehensive winter trail map will be available in Fernie this winter. Maps for Fernie Nordic trails are also available at their website.

Prepare To L fVE Winter

W

hether you ski, board, sled or snowshoe, the mountains surrounding Fernie offer the perfect opportunity to explore this winter. We want everyone to leave Fernie with great stories to tell, so here are some safety tips to make sure you return home with some awesome tales.

• Be prepared

Check local snow and weather conditions at Canadian Avalanche Centre (Avalanche.ca) and plan your route before you head out. If you need any local knowledge, ask at the information centres or in any local outdoors stores.

• Tell someone what you are doing

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to get back. Take a cell phone, walkie talkie or, if you're going deep into the backcountry, a GPS transmitter (SPOT) device so you can communicate in an emergency.

• Take a professional

Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Alpine Resort both offer guided tours.

• Know your limits

Winter shouldn't be hard work, you'll enjoy yourself much more if you are comfortable with the terrain and equipment. Also make sure everyone in your group is capable of the planned activities.

• Use your head

Your head is irreplaceable - wear a helmet!

18 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

• Be equipped

If you are heading into the backcountry or out of bounds Fernie Search and Rescue suggest the following essential items for your backpack – and make sure you and your companions know how to use them. Transceiver, good quality shovel, probe, map, navigation equipment – GPS and compass in case the batteries fail, extra clothing and food and drink, a first aid pack, means of lighting a fire, basic tools, communications equipment.

• Tune up

Make sure your skis, board or sled are in good working order before you head out – and carry basic tools so that if something does go wrong you won’t be stranded. Get your sled serviced at Ghostrider Motorsports and get your skis or board tuned – for local sports stores listings see page 21.

• Don't panic

Being lost is not dangerous if you are prepared. If you become lost remember S.T.O.P – sit, think, observe, plan.

• Prepare your vehicle

Always use winter tires or chains on your vehicle and carry spare clothes, food and water.

• Insurance Assurance

Make sure your travel insurance covers all the activities you have planned. Thousands of visitors safely enjoy Fernie's snow and scenery every year – we hope you are one of them. Photo: Free Press files

The Fernie Mountain Film Festival Fer nie’s arts and culture scene is anything but dull, especially during the winter. One staple event in the arts and culture scene is the Fer nie Mountain Film Festival (FMFF), which has been active for the past decade.

S

tudents from the Mountain Adventure Skills Training (MAST) program at the College of the Rockies organize the annual festival. The students work to bring in films focusing on mountain culture, and organize other events to showcase during the festival. They are also responsible for ticket sales, set up and promotion of the event. In 2015, the event featured a photography contest, in which amateur photographers from the Elk Valley were able to display their work and people voted for their favourite images. This gave the opportunity for local photographers to showcase their work dedicated to the mountains and culture that is fundamental to the area.

Funds raised from the FMFF are usually donated back into community programs, such as the Ghostriders Kids’ Camp and the Fernie Nordic Society, among other initiatives. This year, the FMFF will be hosted at the Community Centre in Fernie over the weekend of February 24-25.

Be sure to mark it in your calendars and visit Fer niemountainfilmfestival. com for more information and announcements.

Snowmobiling in Fer nie

From Mild to Wild Fer nie is not lacking in terrain to explore. With a variety of mountain valleys surrounding the area, Fer nie provides optimal landscapes for a snowmobiling adventure.

L

ooking for a new way to enjoy the winter vistas or see the backcountry sights? Try snowmobiling. The Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) helps numerous people enjoy the outdoors every winter by maintaining groomed trails, enabling snowmobilers of all skill levels to experience the beloved activity. If you own your own sled, the Fernie Snowmobile Association can help you with local trail updates and information on snowmobiling events. Sled rentals are available, but remember, while the mountains provide the ultimate playground, they can also be extremely dangerous. Make sure to check the snow and weather reports and that you have the proper equipment before

heading out into the mountains. The FSA is in works with the tenure landowners to gain access to local areas and logging roads, such as Coal Creek and Morrissey. Three years ago, the FSA built a new sledder’s cabin. Located roughly 17 kilometres south of Fernie in the Coal Creek area, the Rolling Hills cabin has all the amenities needed for sledders to enjoy a day trip and explore that area. There are no overnight stays allowed except in an emergency situation. There is another cabin located in Ram Creek area, and the Wrangler’s Cabin is located in the Morrissey area. Firewood and barbeques are provided at the cabins. While you don’t need to be a member of the Photo: Ghostrider Motorsports/Submitted

FSA to enjoy the trails, if you plan to spend more than four days out there, a membership could be a benefit to you. The FSA charges $20 per day for non-members to use the trails, all of the money collected going towards grooming the trails, maintaining proper signage and cabin upgrades. Memberships cost $120 and allows members unlimited access to all of the trails in the area along with having a voice in the Association and being an active member in the British Columbia Snowmobile Federation. The FSA operates as a non-profit organization and hosts events throughout the season, such as drag races in February.

Memberships can be purchased online at Fer niesnowmobile.com. Trail maps are available at Ghostrider Motorsports, Gearhub and the Tourist Information Centre.

Locals Perfect Day When travelling to a new area, what most tourists would like to know is what the locals are up to.

A

local’s knowledge on where to eat, what to do, and what is fun in the area is worth its weight in gold. What would be the perfect day for a local? We asked this question to John Gallant, who has lived in Fernie for six years. He came for a season, stayed for the summer, and still hasn’t left, five years later. John is a ski patroller at the hill in the winter and works construction in the summer and was happy to share his most ideal day with us. His perfect day would start with the perfect cup of coffee. Luckily, Fernie has no shortage of coffee shops, all buzzing with the smell of caffeine in the morning. Freshies, Mugshots and the Valley Social all supply coffee to eager locals in the morning. John adds that if you’re hungry, a Mt. Fernie Bagel from Big Bang Bagels would hit the spot. John’s ideal day would be spent, not surprisingly, doing powder laps at Fernie Alpine Resort. He

30 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

would start with laps of the Boomerang Chair before heading to the White Pass and would finish off a big day of skiing with the Knaut Chutes. To cap off the day on the hill, John would enjoy an après, with a cold refreshment and a plate of nachos at the Griz Bar. When in town for the evening, John would head to the Raging Elk, located in the hostel, for a game of free pool. To him, the Raging Elk has the perfect combination of “nice people and weirdos” to make for good conversation. The perfect game of pool would be followed up with a nice dinner at one of the local restaurants, including Nevados, the Curry Bowl or Yamagoya. And John would wrap up his perfect day with a night cap at one of the local drinking establishments, many of whom host regular trivia nights and jam sessions. John’s ideal day sounds pretty picturesque to us. Photo: Brooks Bereziuk

Fernie Wilderness Adventures

F

ernie Wilderness Adventures (FWA) Snow Cat Skiing was established in 1986 by Kim and Deb Sedrovic. Their one goal in mind was to provide their clients an exceptional outdoor experience in a relaxed, casual atmosphere while enjoying the snow and great Canadian Rockies. FWA is nestled in the mountains just southwest

34 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

of Fernie Alpine Resort, which is known for its legendary deep snow dumps. With over 5,000 acres and a variety of ridges from which to begin your descents, the FWA guides have a vast variety to choose from. The terrain ranges from ridges and valleys to spectacular gladed meadows. With the elevation at over 7,150 ft./2170 metres the falling snow and Photo: Kyle Hamilton

dry powder add up to perfect conditions for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy the world renowned Canadian Rockies. A lead guide navigates the line down the mountain and ensures that the group descends safely. Depending on the group and conditions of the day, you can expect to get eight to 10 runs, which is approximately 10,000-12,000 metres of vertical drops for the day. Skiable terrain is dependent upon current weather conditions, group ability and safety. As with any climate controlled activity, some alterations to daily plans may be necessary to provide the safest experience possible for that day’s conditions. FWA strives to offer a professional, yet fun atmosphere. You will get the feeling on the mountain that you are the first person ever to ski this terrain, and if you are tired, it is always an option to sit out a run in the cat, up front with the driver.

Fernie Wilderness Adventure Lodge

Fernie Wilderness Adventures’ charming lodge awaits your arrival in a beautiful wooded valley. The lodge keeps to a true unmarred mountain experience but with a cozy feeling. It boasts a spacious vaulted ceiling living area with a solid

wood dining table, where guests can share stories and memories of the day. After an exhilarating day you can relax in the authentic wood burning hot tub as a cool mountain breeze surrounds you. Enjoy your favourite beverage under the stars on the large deck around the outdoor fire pit. An undisturbed sleep awaits you in one of the eight bedrooms, three of which have private bathrooms. FWA lodge is truly an experience of its own. It will be hard not to feel warmth, serenity and comfort during your stay in the lodge.

Dining

At FWA they believe in serving and cooking “family style” food. Their chef never stops preparing high quality, delicious food in vast quantities during your stay. They believe a plentiful hot breakfast is the only way to start the day. A nutritious hand-packed lunch is presented to each guest to ensure regulated high levels of energy. Rest assured when you take in a day of cat skiing with Fernie Wilderness Adventures that safety, fun and comfort are all on the menu!

The Fernie Ghostriders Hard-hitting hockey since 1991

F

or 25 years, the Fernie Ghostriders have been a part of the tapestry of Fernie, providing hours of hard-hitting entertainment to the loyal fans of the hockey club. The Junior B team is one of 20 in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) and has garnered a reputation as being a strong team. The team has full intention on keeping that reputation this season. Ghostrider Head Coach and General Manager, Craig Mohr, says the team is looking sharp heading into the season and he has high hopes for them. Mohr believes the division will play at a high calibre this year, as one of their division competitors, the Creston Valley Thundercats, are hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup, the Junior B Provincial championship. Under the leadership of captain Alex Cheveldave, the team has their eyes set on the division championship title, which

they captured in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons. Some of their biggest rivals include the Columbia Valley Rockies, the Creston Valley Thundercats, and the Golden Rockets. Their biggest rivalry, however, is with the Kimberley Dynamiters. Photo: Free Press files

Ghostrider home games draw a large and eager crowd to the Fernie Memorial Arena, as fans have supported their local team since 1991. There is a sense of camaraderie and hometown pride in the arena and the Ghostriders thrive on the energy and atmosphere the fans create. On game nights, the arena is buzzing with fans flocking to the stands to watch their favourite players. The team appreciates the community support and gives back to the community with other initiatives, including weekly bingo nights, food bank donations and wearing specialty pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness. The pink jerseys are auctioned off at the end of October, and all proceeds are donated to Friends for Friends, a local charity. Be sure to check out one of the best teams in the league at one of their 23 home games at the Fernie Memorial Arena this season.

Come out and see why the players from Alberta, B.C. and beyond choose to play for the Fernie Ghostriders Junior B Hockey Club. The team has gained a passionate following and the arena is a flurry of activity on game nights.

Vodka Tour at Lizard Creek Lodge’s Ice Bar

Embracing the chill of winter, Fernie’s ice bar offers a tour of the world of vodka. The Ice Bar’s sub zero winter bite is lessened by the warmth of the bars hospitality and Helly Hansen jackets. The ice room features many ornate hand carved decorations to complete a participant’s experience.

Ice Fishing

Fishing is a year-round activity in Fernie and the many tributaries and lakes in the area offer a mix of ice and open water fishing opportunities depending on the weather. Whether it’s a fly rod or an ice fishing rod, there are options for most types of fishing. Just make sure to check the thickness of the ice before heading out. Photo: Free Press files

ernie is a great place to visit, but there are a few things people should know about life in the mountain town. Dogs: Being an active and outdoors-loving town, Fernie also loves the furry four-legged friends who enjoy adventuring with us. However it should be noted that off-leash dogs are not permitted within city limits. There are two parks where dogs are allowed to run and venture off leash: at the north end of Annex park and on the south side of the Fernie Aquatic Centre. Dog owners are also required to pick up after their furry friends. Parking: Fernie gets ample amounts of snow – which also means it has to be plowed to clear ar

There are signs marking when it is prohibited to park in a certain location. Parking regulations can be found on the City’s website, at Fernie.ca. Speed limits: While the highway through Fernie is regulated at 60 km/hour, everywhere else in Fernie has a speed limit of 40 km/hour, unless it is posted otherwise. There are many residential areas in Fernie, which become wonderland playgrounds for children in the winter. A slower speed limit helps ensure everyone is safe on the local roadways.

The Legend of the Griz According to local legend, Fer nie was not always blessed with an abundance of powder. It took a local man - a hero in these parts - to coax the snow out of the sky, gracing the region with an astounding annual snowfall of more than 10 metres. That man is known as the ‘Griz’.

42 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

T

he tale of the Griz begins in 1879, when the local legend was born in a ferocious grizzly bear’s den, prompting an epic battle between child and bear. Locals, fearful of the noise echoing through the valley, sent out a party to find the source of the ruckus. The search was unsuccessful, but a local man claimed he saw a boy, wearing a bear coat and hat. But none of the townfolk believed the man’s tale, and the sighting was almost forgotten. Many years later, the Griz was once again spotted. Backcountry skiers, ascending the peaks of the Lizard Range near Fernie Alpine Resort, spotted the Griz lumbering through a snowstorm and wielding an eight-foot musket. No longer a boy, the witnesses said the Griz was a man of average height, but with massive shoulders, six feet wide. The skiers watched in awe, as the Griz pointed his musket to the sky and fired off a shot – prompting the light snowstorm to become heavy, filling the sky with snow. In his honour and to celebrate the snow, the people of Fernie hold a festival every spring known as “Griz Days”. If these celebrations are pleasing to the Griz, he blankets the mountain with Fernie’s legendary powder. Join the celebrations this year from March 3 to 5. Be sure not to be caught without the traditional Griz pin. Photo: Free Press files

Powder Pedal Paddle Thought relays were reserved for only the warmest months of the year? Not in this active community!

T

o wrap up the winter season, Fernie Alpine Resort hosts the Powder Pedal Paddle Relay every April, where teams of two to five people ski, bike, paddle and run their way into spring. This extreme community event sees team members racing from the top of the mountain on skis and snowboards, speeding down the Ski Hill Road on a bike and ferociously pedaling into town, paddling a canoe or kayak up the bitterly cold Elk River toward the Fernie Alpine Resort access road and finally, dashing up the road to the finish line. Participants gather at the ski hill base at the end of the race for a barbeque and prizes, and take in the festivities of live music at Fernival. Not fast enough to place on the podium? Not to worry, sometimes slow and steady does truly win the race! Prizes and bragging rights go out to all sorts of different humorous categories, including longest on course (slowest!), best team name and best costume.

backcountry fun. Shantelle especially wants to stress that ladies can have as much fun, if not more fun, on the sled with the right mentality and training. Along with their clinics, Weir Boondocking provides a rustic experience as they stop to cook their clients’ lunch on a backcountry campfire. They can also help arrange for snowmobile rentals and will help outfit clients with the proper backcountry safety gear. Elk Valley Snow Shepherds Whether you’re a seasoned backcountry expert looking for gladed steeps or looking to boondock you’re first powder field, the Elk Valley Snow Shepherds offer custom guided adventures.

I

n addition to guided days, the company offers Avalanche Skills Training (AST) 1 certification courses, as well as days for companion rescue. New for this year they will offer “Mountain Sledding 101”, a three-day course that includes an AST 1 course designed to get riders accustomed to the backcountry through hands on field and classroom training. The guides at Elk Valley Snow Shepherds can make the most of a client’s limited time and craft a custom experience whether it be riding skills improvement, mountain mentorship, or

just straight up deep powder sledding. Some of the guides’ favourite days are with novices and families because they can show people a wilder side of Fernie that they may otherwise never see, while igniting a passion for the sport of snowmobiling, and forging some great memories for their clients. The guides say they are the purveyors of two-stroke-cold-smoke-Fernie-stoke. You can find out why through their website Elkvalleysnowshepherds.com or on social media @elkvalleysnowshepherds

Top Five Backcountry Essentials Here are some backcountry safety tips from an Avalanche Skills Training (AST) and lead guide at Elk Valley Snow Shepherds instructor, Justin Boehm. 1) Mandatory avalanche safety gear for everyone headed out sledding includes digital transceiver, a collapsible metal shovel, a 3 metre+ probe, and we recommend an avalanche airbag. Check your gear before every ride and practice with it frequently. No excuses. 2) An Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course at a minimum. 3) A kit to handle injuries, overnight stays and mechanical breakdowns. Zipties, mechanics wire, hose clamps, and a tarp can go a long way. 4) An emergency communications plan including a device such as an InReach, SPOT, or satellite phone and someone at home who knows your plan for the day. In the Elk Valley, Search and Rescue services are initiated through the RCMP by calling 911. Keep all electronic devices such as cell phones, GPS, and SPOTS at least 50cm away from your transceiver to reduce possible interference. 5) A Reality Check: Think about your riding group; Are you compatible with like minded goals/risk tolerance, is it a manageable group size, do you have the required equipment and Photo: Kyle Hamilton

skill for the trip planned, are you willing to put your life in your riding companions hands and are you willing to have their lives in yours, and finally, how will the decisions we make today affect family, friends, the community, and others? Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

There are a plethora of races throughout the summer that will help every rider practice and master their skills and numerous groups and resources to help along the way.

6. Summer Social Series

The Summer Social Series keeps the downtown core active with a variety of events over the summer. The Wednesday Night Concert series provides free concerts to eager audiences, and turns Station Square, located outside of the Arts

Station, into a concert venue for the evening. The Wednesday Night series features a different performer on every Wednesday in the summer. The Sunday Socials are spread out over July and August and feature a variety of events. One to keep an eye out for is the annual Show n’ Shine, usually held in August.

7. Hiking

Nothing else complements the majestic mountains like a strong trail network. The hiking around Fernie is exceptional, with trails for every skill and comfort level. There are a variety of day hikes, or for the more adventurous, there are overnight options as well. Many of the local shops will be able to provide the information and equipment to ensure a unique experience. Don’t forget the bear spray, as the bears are known to love the trails as well.

8. Recreational Activities

Fernie has more than just mountains to play in. The Fernie Golf and Country Club is a worldclass course, featuring 18 holes and views not found on any other course. If water is what is needed, the Elk River provides more than just fishing. Try a rafting experience with one of the guide outfits or even grab some friends and float the river on your own. n the surface, Fernie might seem like any mountain resort town: beautiful vistas, interesting shops, and a busy ski hill. If you look deeper, you will find a rich and dramatic history. It was a diverse and resourceful lot that toughed it out to build a life in Fernie. Their hardships and achievements created powerful bonds of community that have held fast for over a century. The Fernie Museum’s core exhibit, This Is Our Fernie, explores the many events that have helped shaped Fernie, including the legend of a curse, fires that destroyed the town and mining disasters that took fathers and sons.

WHEN YOU EXPLORE THE EXHIBIT FIND THESE TREASURES

* Pick one of Fernie’s Faces and through mini video clips, that use true stories and archive history photos, the story of Fernie is told through their eyes and their time. * Follow the timeline of Fernie’s evolution through booms, busts, successes and tragedies from first explorers in the valley to present day. * Discover our work/life balance in We Work Hard, We Play Hard displays. * And learn about what you see out of the Museum windows - heritage buildings, spectacular mountains and the legend of the Fernie Curse.

At its peak, over 1,200 people called Hosmer home. Dress best for the season

W

e all know to layer up with warm underwear and a waterproof shell before hitting the slopes or the trails. But here in the Elk Valley, we need to dress and prepare for the cold even if we are just taking a walk to the grocery store. Here is a list of ways to be prepared for the cold, every day, from October to April. • Loosen your boots. It’s tempting to wrap those cold feet in nice thick wooly socks and nice cozy, tight boots, but actually, it is better to allow some air to circulate to keep those tootsies warm. Wrap your toes up too tightly, and you risk constricting blood flow to your feet and making them feel even colder. Instead, opt for thinner wool or polypropylene socks and consider going up a shoe size for your winter footwear. • Waterproof your extremities. Choose boots, socks, gloves, and mittens that will keep moisture out while allowing perspiration to escape. Look for gloves with gathering at the wrist and socks with light binding around the band. If your boots and shoes are not already water-tight, you can weatherproof them yourself using a spray protectant or a beeswax product. • Select the right gloves for the job. Gloves with a “convertible” top can make it easier to rifle through the change in your pocket to pay for a coffee. These days, you can also find gloves with small plastic dots on the fingertips - perfect for dialing your cell phone! But you’ll need warmer

52 Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

gloves with some grip to them if you have to shovel your sidewalk or scrape the ice off of your windshield. Pull rubber cleaning gloves over the top of your usual gloves for traction if you’re in a pinch. To combat extreme cold, slip disposable hand warmers into your gloves. These packets, made with various compounds including iron, charcoal, salt, and water, take advantage of the natural reaction between those elements to create long-lasting, mellow warmth. • Choose wool. While cotton socks make sense in the summer, in cold weather they can be moisture traps that provide no warmth or insulation. Since it’s thicker and more insulated, wool stays warmer. Even though wool absorbs moisture, it dries up quickly. Wool socks may not be too sexy, but they’ll protect your tootsies. • Protect against windburn by wrapping up your face with a scarf or even a ninja-style balaclava. Slather protective moisturizer or petroleum jelly on your face to protect and stop your skin drying out. And don’t forget those vulnerable ears! Protect them with a hood, hat, headband or even earmuffs! • Don’t slip up! Those sidewalks are slippery. Avoid a cracked tailbone by keeping walkways and stairs cleared of snow and ice. Wear rubber soled shoes or boots and invest in some slip on, anti slip cleats to really give your feet some traction. Photo: Free Press files

Downtown gaining steam One of Fer nie’s greatest assets.

D

owntown is one of Fernie’s greatest assets. The world knows Fernie for mountains covered in deep snow, world class waterways, and endless trails in gorgeous scenery. People come from every corner of the world to see our nature. When they get here they see it, then they come downtown. We are very proud to be involved in our bustling downtown business district. We are surrounded by other hard working business owners who truly care about the future of our community. We continue to gain the support of citizens who work in the Elk Valley and spend their money in the Elk Valley. We will never be able to thank these people enough for what they do for Fernie. B.C. has endless snowy mountain ranges, waterways, and scenic trails. However, not every community has a gorgeous downtown business district with multiple restaurants, bars, retail locations and professional offices. There are few other communities that come to mind when I consider our population compared to our downtown amenities. Our team at Nevados would like to thank those individuals who have worked for years to bring Fernie’s core back to life. Without your hard work, we would not be here. Without you, Fernie would be a completely different place. Just imagine Fernie without your favourite coffee shop. Imagine it without your best friend

Photo: Kyle Hamilton

who can live here by having a job at that coffee shop. The positive ripple effect our downtown has on our community is evident. Downtown has old Fernie charm mixed with newer exciting businesses like Nevados, Beanpod, the re-opening of the Northern, Gear Hub, Clawhammer, Big Bang Bagels, Coal Town, The Green Petal, the list goes on. How exciting is the future of our downtown! Most small towns would kill to have this kind of growth. I personally have had the privilege of living in many small towns across our great country; I can’t remember any of the others having two chocolate shops! I remember begging my parents to drive me 80kms to buy a set of skis. I think there are more skis in Fernie than in Nova Scotia. I don’t take that fact for granted, I hope you don’t. I am thankful to those who came before us, those who set the bar. Those Fernie families who literally built this town from ashes. The ones who believed in what Fernie could be. I think your dreams are beginning to take shape. That must feel good. We are so happy that Fernie’s growth is occurring in the centerpiece of our community’s future. Nevados will do its small part to keep that momentum moving forward. Thank you Fernie, and CHEERS TO OUR DOWNTOWN! Kurt Saari Owner/Dishwasher Nevados Fernie Winter 2016/2017 - Thefreepress.ca

Fernie Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program Fer nie is full of amabassadors. Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program.

T

he Ambassador Program is an educational program open to anyone in Fernie, providing insights and value to help visitors get their bearings in the area. It allows for locals to learn about the area and use that knowledge to enhance the visitor experience. Everyone who participates in the program will have valuable knowledge to pass on to anyone who is curious, visitors and locals alike. It focuses on customer service, and encourages awareness of the many features of Fernie, including trail networks, history, culture and community resources. While Fernie’s Ambassador program is only in its second year, other municipalities that have embarked on similar programs have seen huge

success. Whistler has seen huge success with their program, called The Whistler Experience, and over 5,600 residents – over 50 per cent of the population – have taken the program to enhance their knowledge of their town. Fernie’s Chamber of Commerce is hoping for similar success here. So far, the Ambassador Program has been well received in Fernie, with both businesses and locals saying they have interesting tidbits of information in the four-hour course. So if you’re new to the area and want to know about the Ghostrider legend, or any other bit of local knowledge, don’t be afraid to ask one of the many local businesses that participate in the course. They might know more than you’d expect.
