Welcome to Paradise Somewhere wrapped in walls of stone and perforated with peaks of evergreen trees, there lays the quaint city of Fernie. A place where ski boots dig holes into main street snow, and goggles hang on the necks of locals. A place where the cold air smells of cedar and bonfire smoke, and everyone wears uniforms of flannel and toques. Where fat bikes carve into mountainsides and cross country skis slice past frozen rivers.
With a community knit tighter than a wool sweater, the streets pulsate with smiles and waves, sidewalk conversations about snow conditions and chairlift rides that turn into lifelong friendships.
Whether you’re coming for a weekend or a lifetime, there are boundless ways to spend your days.
Perhaps start your morning warming frozen fingertips over a steaming cup of coffee, purchased from one of the many locally owned cafes lining Second Avenue. Maybe take a stroll among the old brick buildings, popping into shops and browsing through an array of snowboards and

houseplants, handmade goods and warm chocolate treats.
Of course, no trip is complete without paying a visit to Fernie Alpine Resort, infamous for its waist deep powder, thrilling events and dreamy runs. More of a culture buff? Head into the Fernie Museum for a blast from the past, or visit one of the many art galleries showcasing paintings and carvings influenced by the surrounding peaks and valleys. Once the sun sets and the stars come out, stay stoked with a dinner at one of the bustling restaurants peppering the city, or shake the snow off your boots dancing at a jam night over pints of beer and baskets of fries.
As the snow begins to fall, the city also lights up with numerous events; head out for some winter fun at the annual Griz Days winter carnival, the Fernie on Fire show, orthe Fernie Mountain Film Festival.
Whether you landed yourself here for the fresh lines, the lively nightlife, or the vibrant culture, memories of Fernie are sure to press themselves into your heart for years to come.

Griz Days 2021 This winter’s 44th annual Griz Days winter festival is still in the early planning stages but is set to go ahead on the weekend of March 5-7, 2021. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the lead organizers at the Fernie Chamber of Commerce are planning a modified version of the extremely popular festival. A typical Griz Days involves three days of activities and events across the community, culminating with downtown celebrations on the Saturday afternoon/evening and the Dummy Downhill competition on Sunday up at Fernie Alpine Resort. Griz Days celebrates our community’s winter heritage and historical traditions, while paying tribute to the mythical creature the Griz – who lives in the Lizard Range and shoots powder snow from his musket.
Popular events include the Extreme Griz competition, the Baby Griz Crawl, a craft fair, the Griz parade and live music with a beer garden, among other exciting activities.

Winter 2020/2021 - Thefreepress.ca
For the 2021 installment of Griz Days, some of these key events will have to be significantly modified or take a year off. But there will still be enough of the fan favourites to make it the party we all know and love – including Griz Pin sales for charity, home decorating contests, sightings of the Griz across the community, physically-distanced events like the Extreme Griz competition, and a massive fireworks display over Fernie.
Stay tuned to ferniegrizdays.com and the Griz Days social media accounts for the latest information and announcements. We cannot wait to celebrate with locals and visitors alike this March. May the Griz deliver plenty of snow to us all this ski season! Brad Parsell Executive Director Fernie Chamber of Commerce

Fat Biking Fat biking has become very popular over the last few years with the influx of fat bikes on the market and people’s eagerness to bike all year long. Here is a fun, multi level loop in Ridgemont to help you kick off the season.
The loop starts on Cemetery By-Pass, continue right up Kiddy Up and on to Queen V for a little bit more climbing on some switchbacks. Stay right on Eco-Terrorist hitting a series of boardwalks just to keep you on your toes. Stay left connecting with Deadfall until you hit the four corners intersection. The climbing is finally complete! Take a left and follow the sign to Broken Derailleur. Continue straight ahead on Sidewinder for a fun downhill to finish things off.

Distance: Approx. 9 km Level: Multi – green/blue Time: 1-2 hrs.
Timing is key for a good ride. Ideally you want to get on trails that are nicely packed or groomed recently. Keep an eye out for grooming updates on Fernie Trails Alliance social media channels, website and their Member Clubs’ sites. In addition, check out Trailforks for the latest trail conditions. Layering is key to accommodate the different temperatures. On a cold day, consider wearing goggles, using a buff to protect your face and Bar Mitts are a must! Shoe covers are another great idea if you are planning on using your summer riding shoes. Another great option is to invest in a pair of winter shoes/boots. Finally stay hydrated and most importantly have fun!

Island Lake Lodge For over 30 years Island Lake has been a mecca for snow sports media and has a reputation as one of the premier mountain lodges in North America. The magnificent peaks of the Lizard Range in the B.C. Rocky Mountains tower over alpine bowls, valleys and perfectly gladed tree runs. The inspiring terrain and powder have become legendary – producing countless amazing images and film segments throughout the years. Industry icons such as Craig Kelly and Scot Schmidt helped put Island Lake on the map. Though this year things are looking a little different it does allow for skiers and snowboarders, who have been chomping at the bit, to finally get catskiing and see what

all the fuss is about. Island Lake will not only be modifying their safety protocols to keep guests and staff safe, but also modifying their catskiing offerings. While the border remains closed, there will be additional opportunities for locals and visitors to Fernie to experience one of the most renowned ski and snowboard experiences in the world. Visit their website to sign up for their standby list…it’s time to get catskiing off your bucket list!
*Please note* The Island Lake road is very popular for walking, Nordic skiing and other activities. Please be advised that the road is very busy with snowcat and snowmobile traffic. Dogs should be on leash and under control at all times. If a snowmobile or snowcat approaches, you and your entire group should move to one side and let the motorized vehicles pass. Snowmobiling Fernie is rapidly becoming one of BC’s most popular sledding destinations. With over 160km of maintained snowmobile trails serving as gateways to five distinct riding areas, Fernie offers modern infrastructure and terrain for every kind of rider. The Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) has been the organized voice for sledding in the region since 1990 and provides grooming services, three backcountry warming cabins, staging area facilities, as well as several events through the season. Annual memberships are available for $200 (primary member, early bird), or $100 (secondary, early bird) for each additional member in the same household. Day passes can be purchased at staging areas at $25 for an adult day pass or $10 for youth 14 and under. The FSA hosts several popular events through the season including Family Rides, Avalanche Awareness Days, the Corbin Vintage Sled Ride, and more. Information on grooming schedules and event details can be found on the FSA

website at ferniesnowmobile.com.
All sledders in B.C. are required to adhere to the Off-Road Vehicle act which stipulates that every snowmobile must have vehicle registration, insurance, and all riders must wear helmets. In addition, riders must be aware of special restrictions or closures which are detailed in the RDEK Access Management Maps.
Backcountry users should be equipped with emergency equipment including an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe as well as a method of emergency communication such as a SPOT or inReach Device. There is no cell phone reception in most of Fernie’s riding areas. In the event of emergency, Search and Rescue can be activated by contacting the RCMP via 911. Leave a trip plan with friends or family, pack sufficient equipment to survive an unintended night outdoors, and request emergency assistance early to allow for sufficient day light hours to conduct a rescue if needed. A wide variety of snowmobile services are available in town. Sleds, equipment,

and rentals are available at Ghostrider Motorsports. Elk Valley Snow Shepherds offers guide services, rentals, clinics and avalanche training. Weir Boondocking provides riding clinics and instruction. Avalanche airbag refills are available at Gearhub Sports. If it is your first-time riding in Fernie, there are many suitable rides available to familiarize yourself with the terrain or for those new to
the sport. Both the Coal Creek and Morrissey staging areas offer 16 km of groomed trail to reach either the Rolling Hills or brand-new Wranglers warming cabins. Both cabins offer open meadows nearby for riders to play in and can be linked together via various groomed loop route options. Also new for winter 20/21 – the FSA has purchased an additional snowcat groomer for their fleet for improved and additional grooming frequency this season.
Five distinct riding areas 1. Coal Creek (Coal Creek Staging Area, 16km to Rolling Hills Cabin) is best for families, novice riders, and those new to the area. Groomed trail to the cabin but also offers ample opportunity to dip off the trail into play zones.
2. Morrissey (Morrissey Staging Area 15km to the Wranglers Cabin) is best for intermediate to advanced riders looking for great glade riding. Groomed trail to cabin and access to both the Rolling Hills and the Notch riding areas. 3. Hartley Lake (Hartley Staging Area, no cabin) is best for advanced riders with suitable skills and avalanche training. Groomed trail crosses several large avalanche paths and leads to stunning alpine riding zones.
4. Ram or Cabin Pass (Ram staging area 50km to Ram cabin) is best for advanced riders with suitable skills and avalanche training. Ungroomed trail leads riders into a variety of advanced riding terrain. 5. Corbin (Corbin Staging Area, no cabin) offers excellent intermediate to advanced riding. Short groomed trail leads into panoramic alpine bowls on the B.C./AB border.

shouldn’t be a problem. Over 15 kilometres of trails are professionally cared for by the Fernie Nordic Society. Trail conditions and grooming updates as well as pass purchases and the opportunity to donate to this local non-profit can all be found at fernienordic.com.
Elk Valley Nordic Centre Getting there: from downtown Fernie follow Highway 3 south, turn right on Mt. Fernie Park Rd. The main parking lot is at Mount Fernie Provincial Park. Trails: Varying difficulty, “green” to “black” with a growing trail network of over nine kilometres. The trails were professionally designed for Nordic skiing. Recent work on the trail network and at the staging area should allow for early season skiing and excellent late season conditions. The Elk Valley Nordic Centre recently completed a warming hut that is located at the trailhead. The Hut may be closed this winter, but on weekends there is a trail ambassador there who can help you plan a route. Maps and information on the network are also available at Tourism Fernie and most of the hotels.
Fernie Golf Club
Getting there: Located in Fernie, this network is easy to access. From downtown Fernie head north along Highway 3, turn right on 15th Street, left on 6th Avenue and then right on Fairway Drive. Fairway Drive ends at the Fernie Golf Club (FGC) clubhouse. Trails: over 12 kilometres of groomed track loop through open terrain and forests. This network is ideal for new skiers or those seeking limited elevation. These trails are groomed by both the FGC and the Fernie Nordic Society. There is a restaurant located at the Clubhouse called the Cast Iron Grill; they will be open Thursday to Sunday from noon until close. Fernie RV Resort and Mountain High Adventures will be grooming the Fernie Dyke Trail and new loops just behind the Fernie Golf Course and accessing the the Fernie Nordic Society trails there. The Fernie City Ski Shuttle will be making a stop at the Mountain High Adventures yurt and cafe where there will be snowshoes, fatbikes, snowmobiles and nordic skis (even in youth sizes) available to rent.
Montane Nordic & Multi-Use Trails Getting there: From downtown Fernie take Pine Ave. to Coal Creek Rd. A turn around is located on the right hand side of the road. This is one of the main access points for the Montane network. Trails: This network is extensive, but only 10 kilometres of trails are groomed. Groomed trails are rated as “green” in difficulty. The network offers varying terrain from open trails to more challenging forested trails. Extras: Some trails will lead skiers to the Castle Mountain network. A warming hut is located on the far end (four kilometres) of the trail network. Note: Many of the trails in this network are non-motorized multi-use, therefore fatbikes, snowshoes, and dogs may also be seen in the area. As these are not Nordic specific trails be sure to watch for traffic!
Fernie Alpine Resort
Getting there: Follow Highway 3 south from Fernie and turn right on Fernie Ski Hill Road. The road will take skiers to the main village. Nordic skiing starts at parking lot 4. Trails: 14 kilometres of groomed and trackset trails await skiers. The trails range from beginner to intermediate for both disciplines. Lessons and rentals are available at the resort village. The village also has all the vacation amenities needed. Note: Many of the trails in this network are non-motorized multi-use. Fatbikes, snowshoes, and dogs may also be seen in the area. Watch for traffic!

While You’re Sleeping You know what they say… When the skiers are away, dreaming about fresh lines, the cats come out to play. Snow cats, that is, speckling Fernie Alpine Resort with freckles of light throughout the night. Lit only by moonlight, these powerful machines drive up and down the hills and bowls, leaving behind crisp corduroy grooves that glimmer in the rising sun. Grooming is the ski hill’s magic trick, a secret that lays hidden in the dark, yet without it there would be no skiing, no snowboarding, and no runs.
That mystical, unseen quality is part of the reason why groomers like Alina Jackman come back season after season. “Most people have no idea how the grooming got there, and then they wake up and it’s there,” said Alina.
“Being able to ski around watching all the people enjoy the corduroy is why I go to work.”
This year is going to be Alina’s seventh winter as a groomer. “From when I was a child, I was always
20
Winter 2020/2021 - Thefreepress.ca
fascinated by the snow cats. I used to stay up late at night watching all the lights go up and down.”
Turning her childhood dreams into a current reality, Alina is one of Fernie Alpine Resort’s hidden heroes. While all the skiers and snowboarders head back to their hotels and homes, sinking into couches, hot tubs and relaxation, these 15 men and women are just getting started. With over 40 groomed runs, four Nordic trails, a skier cross and a rail park, the resort rides on the back of these devoted, passionate workers.
The show couldn’t go on without Blair Craig and Robin Siggers. Blair has been in charge of the grooming department for as long as anyone can remember, leading the fleet of passionate operators and mechanics. Besides being a part of the evolution of grooming and the technological advances, he is a treasure trove of knowledge for his team, constantly teaching them all the skills they need to manage whatever situation is thrown at them. [o] Robin Siggers
Alina cherishes the memories she’s made alongside Blair, with one in particular sticking out starkly. “On Christmas day 2018 Blair and I spent the entire evening and next morning reestablishing the Polar Peak road so that the lift would be able to be open on Boxing Day.”
“There were so many challenges that night with the snow, hiking winch cable to the top of the road and digging out the switchback with a bank taller than the groomer with no easy place to dump the snow. Lucky for me Blair came armed with far too many ‘Eat More’ bars which were a source of comfort after hiking cable and digging out the winch anchor in the middle of the night.” The famous Polar Peak is a beast of its own according to Alina. It’s the pinnacle of skiing in Fernie–standing on top of a mountain, looking over across the entire Lizard Range. It wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated work of groomers, who work tirelessly throughout the night to groom the road leading down from the top of the lift.
The job isn’t as easy as it sounds though. Not only must the groomers make sure that all core runs and roads are accessible by the morning, but they walk a fine line striving to leave behind the perfect balance of deep powder to
fast corduroy.
And despite battling with an oncoming sunrise, they also are often at war with Mother Nature. According to Alina, the weather and conditions influence how many and how often the runs are groomed. Some of the most challenging conditions can be sticky wet snow, refreezing rain, or nights when it’s dumping snow, blowing wind, and 20 below. Alina says those nights are some of the hardest, causing the cat’s windows to freeze over time and time again. Avalanches also have to be taken into account, with many of Fernie’s bowls inaccessible to the groomers when danger ratings are high.
But the more adverse the conditions are, the harder the groomers work to clear out roads so all shredders, ski patrollers, and lift attendants can travel, work, and shred safely. The hiccups and weather are just part of the adventure though, as the machines become extensions of the operator’s bodies, and the runs become etched into their minds.
It’s all worth it, because as the sun replaces the stars and the groomers park their snow cats, they strap into their own skis and boards and join the hundreds of people shredding their hearts out, knowing they were part of the magic that made it happen.

After Dark When the sun sets and the chairlifts stop running, the thrill doesn’t have to stop, because the streets of Fernie stay alive with jam nights, dance floors, and vivacious bars. If you’re looking for something to do on a Tuesday evening, be sure to swing by The Northern Bar and Stage for their Burger and Beer night, served with a side of lively bingo. A local’s favourite, for only $12 you can treat yourself to a meal, a local cold one, and a fun evening with hilarious prizes up for grabs. Not around on a Tuesday? Not to worry, because apart from serving great meals and drinks every night, The Northern is also well known for hosting lively concerts with everything from big name artists to local bands. Want to show off your guitar playing skills by serenading a crowd of rambunctious shredders? Pop into the Kodiak Lounge for one of their Monday jam nights. Attached to The Raging Elk Hostel, these evenings will occupy

you with hours of sing-alongs, rounds of pool, and cheap drinks.
Also hosting weekly jam nights is The Brickhouse, but make sure you get there early to reserve a seat, because this evening is guaranteed to be packed full of toe tapping locals.
In the mood to bust a move? Head to The Fernie Hotel and Pub for pool, live streamed sports, and the sort of dance floor that keeps you moving and grooving well past your bedtime. For a similar pub-style vibe but a little more on the chill side, venture over to The Pub Bar and Grill at The Park Place Lodge, serving up everything from warm mozzarella sticks to mouth-watering caesars.
Interested in pairing your night with a dress shirt, glass of Argentinian Malbec, and housemade flatbread pizzas? Then you can’t miss out on visiting The Loaf–another great restaurant located just down Fernie’s Second Avenue.
If cocktails are more your thing, then make sure you head into Fernie Distillers, located on First Avenue near the Arts Station. Inside you’ll find a wide array of handmade craft cocktails ranging from sours to old fashioneds and everything your taste buds could dream of in between. Allow one of their expert bartenders to craft you the perfect apres-ski. For anyone spending the night up at Fernie Alpine Resort, luckily a number of evening dining options remain available including local hangout The Rusty Edge, Legends Mountain Eatery, and Cirque Restaurant and Bar. For a Canadian twist on a shot of vodka, be sure to check out the Ice Bar located inside Cirque, where guests can drink in parkas surrounded by glistening feature carvings inside a handcrafted ice room. Dinner and drinks not your style? Thankfully there are also a number of moonlit activities to partake in on the surrounding mountains. Consider heading up to the Montane Hut, either by foot, fatbike or cross country ski, and spend the evening looking up at a sky full of stars around a warm campfire. For more cross country fun, head out to the cross country skiing trails at the Nordic Centre. Rip around with a head lamp for a twist on a classic winter sport, but don’t forget to buy your day pass!
Should you be so daring (and prepared), other winter hikes, like the popular mountain biking trail, Swine Flu, also offer up unique nighttime views of our shimmering little ski town. Should you decide to embark on the adventure, just be sure to bring along everything you need including a head lamp, sufficient layers, food, proper footwear, and of course leave your plans with a friend.
If you’re looking for something to do indoors that’s perhaps a little more quiet and familyfriendly, then be sure to check out the list of movies playing at The Vogue Theatre. Operating since 1908, this historic movie theatre shows everything from new releases, to indie films and of course is complete with endless buttery popcorn.
No matter what your preferred evening activity may be–whether it’s relaxing with a glass of wine, breathing in the chilly air on some skis, or tearing up the dance floor– you’re sure to find a late night activity suited perfectly for you in Fernie.

AVALANCHES Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.
OUT OF BOUNDS SKIING The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers. CRES. TIMBERLINE

Fernie Museum Discover Fernie with the Fernie Museum this winter. The Fernie Museum’s main exhibit This is Our Fernie explores 130 years of Fernie’s history. Exhibits tell the story of hardworking miners, civic leaders and trail builders, fires that razed the town, the prohibition years, legends and lifestyle, economic prosperity, and the living history and architectural heritage behind Historic Downtown Fernie’s rose-gold brick and stone facades.
Of all of the facets that make up Fernie’s history and heritage on display in the exhibit, what do you think would be the most asked-about item? Perhaps a photograph of William Fernie? Or maybe it’s the 20lb air pick that miners would have to wield above their heads for every 8-hour day? Or could it be the beautifully ornate cash register that little visitors love to press the buttons on to hear that evocative ‘caching!’ In fact, it is none of these. The item that intrigues visitors the most is a 2ft photograph in the corner of the room featuring a women’s hockey team from a century ago. The team was founded in 1919 and was active throughout the 1920’s. They were invited several times to compete in the Alpine Cup Tournament in Banff, Alberta, winning the coveted title in 1923. Cheering crowds and a pipe band welcomed the heroes back to Fernie following their win. While it was undoubtedly a significant achievement, it wasn’t the win that makes the photograph so interesting. The
28
Winter 2020/2021 - Thefreepress.ca
team had been named the Fernie Swastikas in 1922 and wore the now-infamous symbol on their jerseys. At that time, the symbol was a popular sun sign with religious and spiritual significance in Eurasian religions. In Western culture it was a popular cultural talisman meaning good luck and good fortune. At least two other Canadian hockey teams also used the name, one from Alberta and one from Nova Scotia. The image is an example of one of the many purposes of a Museum; not just to record history but also to provide a space where it can be understood and discussed. Make sure you visit the museum this winter and uncover Fernie’s story. Trites & Wood Museum Gift Shop The Fernie Museum gift shop features a curated collection of books, jewellery, curios and local products including Fernie Ammolite jewellery, Elk River Apiaries Honey, Fernie Blend Tea, and artwork by local artists. Winter Programming & Fernie Chautauqua Watch calendars for details of gallery shows and Museum programming returning this winter. The Museum will be working with community partners to present an all-new Chautauqua Series to replace the popular Chautauqua and Fall Fair that has traditionally been held each September. Accommodating the restrictions of our new social reality, the Chautauqua Series will feature music, literature, visual arts, and heritage interpretation in smaller settings and online, throughout the winter.

Winter Hiking You’re ambling through a quiet, evergreen forest. Your winter boots sink down into the footprints along a snowy path. Flakes of white fluff slowly drift from above as you inhale the crisp, sharp air. In front of you lays a waterfall, frozen in time and gleaming in the rays of a late winter sun. You hear cracks as streams of water slither underneath layers of light blue ice. The trail took you to Fairy Creek Falls, one of the many winter hikes available in Fernie. With the trail head located beside the Fernie Visitor Information Centre, its accessibility and high traffic make it a perfect adventure the whole family can enjoy. Before embarking make sure to check out avalanche conditions, as a small section of the trail ventures through an area prone to small slides. Close to town and well-marked, a multitude of other trails wait for you in the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Keep chasing those waterfalls with a hike over to Matheson Falls, located just down Coal Creek Road. This trail is best accessed with all-

wheel drive, as the road leading up to it isn’t plowed in the winter.
Another popular winter hiking experience is up one of Fernie’s most famous mountain biking trails, Swine Flu. You certainly won’t regret the effort, because waiting for you at the top will be an awestriking aerial view of town. The trailhead is conveniently located along the highway, in between Canyon Trail and the Information Centre. Often coated in a deep layer of snow, and frequented by fat bikers, consider bringing snowshoes along for this one and as much as it may be difficult to leave them behind our four footed friends are not allowed on this trail. Looking to spice up your hiking experience by heading out at night? There’s no better place to view the starry skies than up at the Montane Hut, where a panoramic view of Fernie Alpine Resort awaits. Bring along a head lamp and perhaps some snacks for an evening spent sharing stories around a campfire.
Prepare to Love Winter Whether you ski, board, sled or snowshoe, the mountains surrounding Fernie offer the perfect opportunity to explore. We want everyone to leave Fernie with great stories to tell, so here are some safety tips to make sure you return home with some awesome tales. • Be prepared Check local snow and weather conditions at Canadian Avalanche Centre (Avalanche.ca) and plan your route before you head out. If you need any local knowledge, ask at the information centres or in any local outdoors stores.
• Tell someone what you are doing Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to get back. Take a cell phone, walkie talkie or, if you're going deep into the backcountry, a GPS transmitter (SPOT) device so you can communicate in an emergency.
• Take a professional Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Alpine Resort both offer guided tours. • Know your limits Winter shouldn't be hard work, you'll enjoy yourself much more if you are comfortable with the terrain and equipment. Also make sure everyone in your group is capable of the planned activities. • Use your head Your head is irreplaceable - wear a helmet!
• Be equipped If you are heading into the backcountry or out of bounds Fernie Search and Rescue suggest the following essential items for your backpack – and make sure you and your companions know how to use them. Transceiver, good quality shovel, probe, map, navigation equipment – GPS and compass in case the batteries fail, extra clothing and food and drink, a first aid pack, means of lighting a fire, basic tools, communications equipment.
• Tune up Make sure your skis, board or sled are in good working order before you head out – and carry basic tools so that if something does go wrong you won’t be stranded. Get your sled serviced at Ghostrider Motorsports and get your skis or board tuned – for local sports stores see page 36. • Don't panic Being lost is not dangerous if you are prepared. If you become lost remember S.T.O.P – sit, think, observe, plan. • Prepare your vehicle Always use winter tires or chains on your vehicle and carry spare clothes, food and water. • Insurance Assurance Make sure your travel insurance covers all the activities you have planned.
Thousands of visitors safely enjoy Fernie's snow and scenery every year – we hope you are one of them. Winter 2020/2021 - Thefreepress.ca

Fernie Ghostriders The Fernie Ghostriders are a Junior ‘B’ hockey team and members of the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). The team takes its name from the shadow of the ghost rider which can be seen on Mt. Hosmer during the summer months, a vision that legends are made of. The Ghostrider home games are played out of Fernie Memorial Arena, and are usually well-attended, energetic crowd pleasers, although this year they will be live streamed on HOCKEY TV so make sure you pick up your subscription there! No games however, garner the enthusiasm or create the hype and anticipation as does a game against the cross Kootenay rivals...the Kimberley Dynamiters.
The News Is Just the Beginning
This team epitomizes what being Canadian and playing hockey is all about. Fernie’s hometown team is coached by Jeff Wagner, recipient of the Coach of the Year Award in his first year with the team (2018/2019). Wagner brings out the best in his players, ensuring they are both good teammates and good citizens.
On and off the ice, the Ghostrider players play like champions. Whether it be taking part in the Reach a Reader campaign to support literacy, or Trick or Treat with a Ghostrider each October, wearing Pink Jerseys to raise breast cancer awareness, marching with the Veterans on Remembrance Day, or assisting with the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign at Christmas, the Ghostriders are “All In”.

Working in Fernie This winter ski season there is a new tool available to help people find a job in Fernie and the surrounding Elk Valley area. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Tourism Fernie, officially launched www. workinfernie.com in June 2020 – designed to attract much-needed workers to the Elk Valley. The ‘Work in Fernie’ workforce attraction website and online job board aims to address the ongoing labour shortages experienced by many businesses in Fernie, by showcasing the diversity of careers and amazing lifestyle on offer in the area to potential workers. In addition to the job listings, there is a wealth of inspirational content and key resources for those job seekers looking to move to the region. The idea of building a workforce attraction program was identified by the Fernie Chamber of Commerce board of directors in their
2019/2020 strategic plan. This issue was also identified as a priority action item in the Fernie Tourism Master Plan and is aligned with a project area in the Kootenay Rockies Destination Development Strategy. The ‘Work in Fernie’ project concept was developed by the Fernie Chamber of Commerce in late 2019, with seed funding for the project awarded through the Rural Dividend Fund – administered by the Government of British Columbia’s Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development.
We strongly encourage local businesses and job seekers alike to engage in this new website. Fernie is such a wonderful place to live and work, not just in winter but all year round. Working in Fernie is more than a smart career move – it’s a lifestyle. Explore all this website has to offer and come join us in the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains!
