Reasons to increase your flexibility Flexibility plays a key role in your overall fitness. In fact, stretching your muscles and joints on a regular basis can make a variety of everyday activities easier. Here are the five main benefits of increasing your flexibility. 1. It improves your posture and balance 2. It increases your range of motion 3. It reduces your risk of getting injured 4. It helps your muscles work more effectively 5. It reduces aches, pains and muscle tension
Furthermore, stretching after you exercise facilitates muscle recovery and repair. It also prevents lactic acid from building up and causing muscle soreness. Keep in mind that stretching shouldn’t be painful. Though it’s normal to feel a pulling sensation, a sharp or stabbing pain means you’ve overextended your muscles or joints, which can result in injury.
Activities to try Stretching is just one of many ways to improve your flexibility. You can also try yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, Pilates, ballet and more. Consider signing up for a beginners’ class in your area.

4 services offered by funeral homes to hold it, whether there’ll be a viewing and more. You’ll also need to select flowers and make decisions about other aspects of the ceremony. A funeral director can assist you with all of this, and some may even help you make arrangements with places of worship and cemeteries. They can also organize for there to be a hearse and driver. 3. Repatriation of remains If the death occurred somewhere far away from the burial location, such as in another country, then you’ll need the help of a funeral home to repatriate the remains. It’s a complex process that’s easier to manage if you have someone in your corner who’s familiar with both the paperwork and legal requirements involved. Losing someone you love is difficult, both because of the emotional toll involved and the considerable work that goes into planning a funeral. When the time comes, you shouldn’t have to do it alone. Fortunately, most funeral homes can alleviate some of the burden by offering these four services. 1. Legal assistance Many funeral directors are familiar with the legal aspects that need to be taken care of. They’ll be able to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. 2. Funeral planning This involves choosing a coffin or an urn, determining what kind of reception to hold, when
4. Pre-planning Making your own arrangements in advance may feel strange, but doing so will give your loved ones peace of mind. They’ll be assured that your funeral reflects your wishes and they won’t have to make difficult decisions. This will help them process the loss and will ensure you’re remembered the way you want to be. Other services funeral homes offer include cremation, obituary publication and burial. Finding one that can take care of a variety of things will help the most in lightening the load placed on your shoulders.

Myths about hospice and palliative care debunked 1. Myth: Hospice and palliative care are exclusively about controlling pain. Fact: While pain management is an important aspect of palliative and hospice care, treatment programs also include psychological, social, practical and spiritual support. 2. Myth: My condition isn’t serious enough to warrant palliative care. Fact: Palliative care isn’t just for those facing a terminal diagnosis. Most people with life-limiting illnesses can benefit from it. 3. Myth: My doctor hasn’t recommended hospice or palliative care, so I don’t need it. Fact: Patients who think they might benefit from hospice or palliative care should bring up the topic with their doctor. 4. Myth: I can’t access palliative care without a hospice.Fact: Palliative care can be provided at home, in the hospital, at a hospice and in long-term care facilities. 5. Myth: If I receive palliative care, it means my life is over. Fact: The goal of palliative care is to improve patients’ quality of life during every stage of their disease. Many continue to receive curative treatment in conjunction with palliative care.
6. Myth: I’m too young for hospice and/or palliative care. Fact: People of all ages can benefit from hospice and palliative care. 7. Myth: I shouldn’t talk about dying with my loved ones — it’s too upsetting. Fact: Addressing your end of life wishes and any advanced medical directives will save your loved ones a lot of stress and uncertainty down the road. 8. Myth: Palliative care is only for people who are at the end of their life. Fact: This type of care can help patients from the time they’re diagnosed right up till the very end. 9. Myth: Children don’t need hospice or palliative care. Fact: Palliative and hospice care are given on the basis of need. Everyone should receive the care appropriate for their condition, age and level of understanding. Dealing with a chronic or terminal illness is challenging, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Hospice and palliative care are available and can provide you with the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual help you require to manage your disease.

Great sources of plant protein You need protein to build and repair your muscles, bones, skin and blood. However, not all plantbased proteins are complete proteins, as some of them have only a portion of the nine essential amino acids required by the body. If you want an alternative to animal protein, here are six plantbased foods that provide a significant source. 1. Seitan This popular, low-carb meat alternative is made by kneading wheat flour with water and rinsing away the starch until only gluten protein remains. 2. Legumes Beans, lentils and peas have high amounts of protein. They’re also excellent sources of fibre, minerals and other important nutrients. 3. Soy products Soybeans are a versatile legume used to make tofu, tempeh, edamame and soy milk, all of which contain the nine essential amino acids your body needs. 4. Nuts and seeds From chia seeds and hemp seeds to walnuts and almond butter, nuts and seeds are a great source of protein, fibre, antioxidants and healthy fats.
Your daily dose of protein The recommended intake of protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. If you want to eat a healthy, balanced diet, protein should account for 10 to 20 per cent of your total daily calories protein. Grains also offer fibre and magnesium. 6. Nutritional yeast Sold as a powder or in flakes, nutritional yeast has a cheesy flavour. It’s also a source of vitamin B12, which helps keep your nerves and blood cells healthy.
5. Grains Quinoa is the only grain that provides your body To ensure you get all the amino acids your body with all nine essential amino acids. However, oats, needs on a vegetarian or vegan diet, aim to eat as wild rice and millet contain significant amounts of wide a variety of proteins as possible.
Signs you need new glasses As you get older, your vision changes. This means that if you’ve been wearing the same eyewear for years, you’re likely due for an upgrade. Here are five signs that it’s time to get new glasses. 1. Your vision is a little blurry If distant objects appear to be out of focus, or if you struggle to make out the words on a page even with your glasses on, you likely need a stronger prescription. 2. You get frequent headaches Even if you haven’t noticed a change in your vision, your eyes might be straining to see clearly. This can lead to eye fatigue and headaches. 3. Your eyes often feel achy Tired, watery, itchy and dry eyes are all signs that your eyes might be working harder than normal to compensate for an outdated prescription. 4. You need to squint to see If you have the correct eyewear prescription, you shouldn’t need to squint to see clearly. While squinting impro ves the focus and clarity of your vision, it also causes eye strain. 5. Your glasses are damaged Scratches on your lenses can impede your vision and lead to eye strain. Additionally, the arms of your glasses can stretch over time, causing them to no longer fit properly.
YEARLY EXAMS The best way to ensure you have the right prescription is to schedule an eye exam with your optometrist at least once a year.

4 vitamins that can improve your oral health The nutrients you consume can impact your oral health. To protect your teeth and mouth, incorporate foods into your diet that contain one or more of the following essential vitamins. 1. Vitamin A Found in oily fish and vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes, this nutrient helps the mucous membranes in your mouth heal quickly. It also helps prevent dry mouth, which is a common cause of bad breath. 2. Vitamin C Known for its many virtues, this antioxidant is essential to keeping your gums healthy. In fact, not getting enough vitamin C can increase your risk of periodontal disease. Brussels sprouts, oranges, strawberries and peppers are all good sources of this nutrient, which helps reduce inflammation in the gums, among other things. 3. Vitamin D This nutrient helps your body absorb more calcium, which plays a crucial role in strengthening your teeth and jawbone. Although your skin naturally produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, you can also add it to your diet by eating oily fish, eggs and fortified dairy or soy products.
4. Vitamin E Nuts, asparagus and sunflower oil are all good sources of this antioxidant, which helps protect your mouth against harmful bacteria. This means it can considerably reduce your risk of developing gum disease. Plus, it can prevent early-stage oral cancers. In addition to eating a balanced diet, you should also brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily and visit your dentist at least once a year to maintain your oral health.
Food for thought
Keep in mind that while citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which is crucial to gum health, they’re also acidic. Since acids wear away the protective enamel on your teeth, it’s best to eat these fruits in moderation.

Ways to move more every day Many of today’s jobs, hobbies and modes of transportation make it easy to succumb to a sedentary lifestyle. Unfortunately, prolonged periods of inactivity are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. If you find yourself sitting too often, here are se ven simple ways to incorporate more movement into your daily routine. 1. Sit on a stability ball rather than the couch while you watch TV or play video games. 2. Walk around the room while you’re on the phone. For longer calls, consider taking a stroll around the block. 3. Listen to audiobooks or podcasts while you use an elliptical machine, stationary bike or treadmill to make your workout more interesting. 4. Use a standing desk. Do simple exerci ses, such as calf raises, while you complete routine tasks like checking your email. 5. Time how long it takes you to do an active
chore like vacuuming, and then see if you can beat your previous record. 6. Take the stairs to really get your heart pumping, climb them two steps at a time. 7. FAQs about suicide prevention Each year, nearly 800,000 people die by suicide, and for each of these fatalities, 20 more people make an attempt. To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, which occurs annually on September 10, here are five common questions asked about suicide prevention.
3. If someone is suicidal, is there time to prevent them from taking action? Most suicides don’t happen suddenly. An accumulation of problems coupled with a “last straw” is more likely to lead to suicidal thoughts than a traumatic event.
1. If someone is suicidal, can I really change their mind? In most cases, people who contemplate suicide don’t want to die. Rather, they want a reprieve from the overwhelming pain and despair they feel. Talking through ways to manage their distress may convince them there’s an alternative.
4. What‘s the link between mental illness and suicide? Most people who commit suicide have untreated or ongoing mental health issues. However, most people with mental health issues don’t commit or contemplate suicide.
2. If a suicidal person suddenly gets better, are they OK? It’s possible that a sudden change in outlook indicates someone is no longer in danger of committing suicide. However, it’s also possible that making the decision to die has provided relief and closure. The only way to know for sure is to have an open and honest conversation with the person.
5. Are threats of suicide always real? On average, four out of five people who are suicidal communicate their intent to take their own life. It’s always best to take threats of suicide seriously. Ignoring or dismissing them would be deeply irresponsible. If you’re worried about yourself or someone close to you, don’t hesitate to ask for help, either through a suicide prevention service, your health-care provider or someone close to you.
Canada Suicide Prevention Service: available 24/7 If you’re thinking about suicide or worried about a loved one, help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-833-456-4566. You can also text for help between 4 p.m. and midnight EST at 45645.
