Welcome to the 2016-2017 season

elcome to the 2016-2017 season of the Fernie Ghostriders. Another great season is ahead of us for sure! The KIJHL will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. So happy the Ghostriders are a part of this league which continues to develop players for not only future hockey leagues and schooling but preparing our boys for life.

We have some new faces on our board this year, welcome aboard Ashley Charette and Mike Casault! Along with the past years board members we are very excited about our upcoming season.

The hard work and dedication of our volunteers has provided our organization with a foundation rich in team play, commitment and integrity.

These attributes are carried over to our team which is led by Head Coach/General Manager Craig Mohr. Along with the commitment are the billet families who graciously invite the young men into their homes and have them as part of their family.

We also continually have so many dedicated community members, sponsors and City of Fernie employees and council who are committed to seeing the team remain successful behind the scene.

Such dedication from all the people who help the team in anyway makes the Fernie Ghostriders

How long have you been with the Ghostriders? Why did you come here?

I believe I’m in my tenth year; I’ve been on and off and started with the Junior A team.

I came here in ‘91 to work at the golf club, I thought I’d only stick around a year but I ended up retiring after 20.

How long have you been with the Ghostriders?

Why did you come here?

I first coached with the Ghostriders in the 2011-12 season and then took some time off.

I started coaching again when Craig took over and this will be my 3rd year with the club.

I was born and raised in Fernie, B.C. I played for the Ghostriders as a rookie in 2007. The year after I made the jump to Junior A. I have always been connected to hockey in Fernie, so it was an easy transition to get involved with the Ghostriders.

How many years have you been playing hockey? What position did you play?

I would have to say somewhere between 12 and 15 years of actually playing as a goalie, when I was in the army I played as a forward and played as a forward in oldtimers too. I started playing when I was 12, a long time ago.

Who is your favourite player? Why? I had a son that played for the Chicago Blackhawks as a goalie in the 80’s; at that time he was my favourite. My overall favourite has to be Bobby Orr - I’ve never seen a guy so good.

What do you bring to the team?

I’ve coached at many levels, I bring that experience with a quiet demeanour, but above all I think I bring some good old time hockey experience.

What are the team’s strengths this year?

Right off the bat, I feel we have a real tight dressing room. The veteran leadership that we have has the team together. For the first time in a few years I see guys really standing up for each other. There’s no cliques, just one team – a tight dressing room is going to lead to real good team play on the ice. I’m looking forward to it.

How many years have you been playing hockey? What position did you play?

I have been playing hockey since I was three. I played defence most of my career.

Who is your favourite player? Why? I have always admired Shea Weber’s style of play. He plays in all situations and plays a very tough style of hockey. He is a great example of a team player.

What do you bring to the team?

I believe I can bring a lot of knowledge to the team, specifically for defending.

Only five years ago I was lacing up my skates for my last Junior game, so I still feel somewhat connected to the game and can relate to most of today’s players. Being a local, I also know what the town of Fernie represents and what it means to play here.

I enjoy sharing this with all our new players.

What are the team’s strengths this year?

We will be a very competitive team this year and we will be tough to play against.

We have some exceptional players this year (new and returning). I think our special teams (power-play and penalty kill) will be very strong this year. Our team has a great work ethic and I think it will make for some exciting hockey!

Off season for the Coach

James Ouimet How long have you been with the Ghostriders? Why did you come here?

This will be my 4th year as assistant coach; I also played one season in 2001-02. The mountain lifestyle and great people is why we decided to live here.

J

ust because the ice is off the rink, and the players have packed their duffle bags and headed home, this does not mean that Craig Mohr, General Manager and Head Coach for the Fernie Ghostriders puts up his feet and waits for September.

From season end to season start up, the coach is on the hunt for new prospects to bolster the blue line. Much of summer is spent using Calgary as his home base as he scouts the players in and around the area.

How many years have you been playing hockey? What position did you play?

I played 14 years of hockey. My position was centre.

Not all of Mohr’s summer is spent in work mode however. This past summer a trip to Chicago to take in a Friday game at Wrigley field was on his agenda. On many summer days, Coach could be found enjoying the Elk Valley, either fly fishing the Elk, or trying to knock strokes off his 19 handicap at the Fernie Golf & Country Club. “I hoped to get it down to 16,” he said of his handicap, “I think the problem was lack of skill by user.”

Who is your favourite player? Why? My favourite player is Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars. He plays a mean game and puts up loads of points.

You don’t always see a power forward with his skill package.

What do you bring to the team?

I bring energy and try to be positive with our players. Also I like to communicate a lot with the guys.

What are the team’s strengths this year?

Our strengths start from our goaltending duo. We have a lot of experience on the team this year that will also help a lot on the leadership side of things.

Our speed and skill level through the line-up is the best I’ve seen in years.

GOODLUCK

While he does make sure to spend some time away from the arena, his mind is never too far from the rink, as he is strategizing what the team will need for the upcoming season. This year in particular, he scouted with the intention of getting bigger players for the wings. He returns to the Fernie Memorial Arena in midAugust to start training camps, both for the Jr. Ghostriders Minor Hockey and the Ghostrider tryouts. By early September, Coach and the team are ready and eager for the season to begin.

Captain Alex Cheveldave - Leads by example

f you’ve ever seen Alex Cheveldave play hockey, you might think he’s a bit – well – terrifying.

But members of the 201617 Fernie Ghostriders can rest easy knowing ‘Chevy’ is on their side again this season, and this time, he’s their captain.

“I was figuring out what I wanted to do this year, and it all led to coming back to Fernie,” explains the 20-year-old from Calgary. “Last year, I had a great time. I loved it – my coaches, my billets, my teammates … I love the culture of the team; it’s a winning culture.”

And so, after committing to the Ghostriders for his final season in junior hockey, Cheveldave began preparing for his return. A few days later, head coach and general manager Craig Mohr made the phone call to offer the captaincy.

“We knew we were going to have a good leadership group, no matter what … but when I found out

Chevy was coming back, it wasn’t a hard decision,” says Mohr, acknowledging Justin Peers, Tayler Sincennes and goalie Brandon Butler as fellow “20s” and team leaders.

R e c o g n i z i n g Cheveldave’s strong work ethic, confidence and dedication to fitness, Mohr and the rest of the Ghostriders staff believed he was a natural choice as a leader and that it would be an easy transition into the captain’s role. Cheveldave credits these attributes to his experience in various leagues across Canada, including junior ‘A’ in Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as the influence of his older brother Cole who is currently the starting goalie for St. Mary’s University in Halifax.

“He’s one of my big idols … a lot of what I know, I learned from him. He’s a hard working guy, for sure, and he’s where he is now because of it.”

Cheveldave’s dedication during games as he moves his six-foot-one, 205-pound mass in a style he describes as “playing with emotion” and “the hard-nosed tough guy.” He’s physical, vocal and relentless, visiting the sin-bin for a total of 88 minutes during 33 regular season and playoff games

in 2015-16. And while most of us would probably dread being pitched against him, the emotion behind the juggernaut also makes Cheveldave an excellent guide for his younger teammates and aspiring Ghostriders.

“You see the soft side of him, too,” reveals Mohr.

“The young players are so appreciative; they walk into a room at 15 or 16 years old and see this large man with a beard and muscles where you probably shouldn’t have muscles, and he sits down with them and just talks to them. With stuff like that, he genuinely cares and you

don’t always see that softer side when he’s on the ice.”

Aside from hockey, Cheveldave enjoys hitting the gym and getting outdoors on his dirt bike. The self-described “amateur mechanic” can also be found working on his various vehicles, although not everyone is convinced that his abilities are quite to journeyman standards.

“I’m not sure I’ll be getting my car worked on

by Chevy… things have blown up and things have leaked, so there’s a little shot about his mechanical skills,” quips Mohr.

Ultimately, Cheveldave’s ambition – to lead Fernie to a championship – is clear.

He expects his team to put in the required hard work, and is ready to lead by example to reach the goal.

“I just like hard work …

I know what you need to bring to be successful and to stay there. I’ll put the team ahead of anything else. That’s who I am.”

Ghostriders announce shortened season

he upcoming hockey season will feature fewer games in the schedule for all teams in the league. The Ghostriders will be playing a total of 47 games, 23 of which are on home ice. The new shorter schedule was a collective decision made by all the teams in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) and allows for an extra week of playoffs.

“We went to a shortened schedule because we felt that there wasn’t enough Friday/Saturdays in our regular season to be able to have 52 games – essentially 26 home games.

So we were stuffing games on Tuesday nights, Sunday afternoons – not the best times to draw fans in,” explained Ghostrider Head Coach and General Manager, Craig Mohr.

“We made a decision to shorten our league schedule up to give us an extra week for our playoffs, because our playoffs are so compressed.

That was another reason behind the

schedule shortening.”

Another change to this year’s schedule is there will be no crossover games between conferences. Teams in the Kootenay Conference, including the Neil Murdoch Division and Eddie Mountain Division, will not face off against teams in the Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference. According to Mohr, franchises in the Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference pushed for this change.

“They felt for financial reasons that we should limit crossover in our travel, and as a league we decided to not do any conference crossovers,” he said.

Mohr added the changes are not set in stone and the league will try out the shortened schedules without crossover games for this season.
