Welcome to the 14th Biennial National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition

O

www.thefreepress.ca

n behalf of the City of Fernie, I want to express a sincere welcome to the National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition. Fernie is a community that has a long tradition of blending a stable resource economy alongside our tourism economy, both economic partners work well to support one another. We feel very proud of our mining heritage, and what that has done for our community. We are proud to support our mining industry by organizing an event that provides opportunities for competitors to test their skills against industry standards and help train their members in safe and controlled environments. Fernie is a natural place to hold events and festivals, and the National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition is certainly an event we look forward to seeing. Watching teams compete lends wonderfully to demonstrating the professionalism and value in supporting emergency response and rescue training, something we at the City absolutely value. There are many participants that help make this competition a success, I would like to recognize the Task Committee that brings their expertise and passion for this competition. I would also like to acknowledge the generous sponsors of this event; we couldn’t do it without you. Lastly, I am very proud of our volunteerism in Fernie, a big part of our success is how many volunteers we have that support events like mine rescue here in Fernie. I wish all participants an excellent competition! Mayor Qualizza

The City of Fernie is pleased to host the 14th Biennial National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition September 6, &7th, 2019. This National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition showcases the vast knowledge, training, commitment, and professionalism that mining emergency response and rescue teams dedicate themselves to keeping their mines and co-workers as safe as possible, every day. Championship Surface and Underground teams from across Canada and the United States will compete in seven categories that simulate potential mining accidents and scenarios that require Mine Rescue Teams to respond to. We invite the public to come and show your support for the mine rescue emergency response teams by spectating at the competitions over the weekend. You can come and watch the simulated Underground tasks at the Fernie Curling Club Friday September 6th, and the Surface competition at the Fernie Aquatic Centre grounds Saturday September 7th. Come show your support and enjoy food trucks, entertainment for children, tradeshow vendors and gain an insight into the intensity of emergency response scenarios and all it entails from the mine rescue teams

n behalf of our 280 business members, the Fernie Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome competitors and guests of the National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition. This event has been hosted in Fernie every other year since 1993 and we are so excited to be hosting this amazing event for the fourteenth time. Growing the people who power Fernie.

It is incredible to think that the first ever Elk Valley Mine Rescue Station was established in nearby Hosmer back in 1910. It was the same station that responded to the infamous Bellevue Mine Disaster back in 1910 and was relocated to Fernie three years later. For well over 100 years, mine rescue competitions have been an integral part of training regimes for mine rescue teams. The local commitment to mining safety has seen teams from the Elk Valley win the Surface Overall title in five of the past six events. This event attracts teams and supporters from all over northwestern US and Canada to our corner of the world. This year we have teams from as far north as the Northwest Territories and as far south as Wyoming. We encourage visiting teams to take some time on the sidelines of the competition to enjoy all the amazing attractions that Fernie as to offer – including our world-class trail network, our historic downtown full of unique shops, the beautiful Elk River and an amazing restaurant/bar scene. The businesses of Fernie are excited to welcome you through their doors. Good luck to all competitors over the various events during the competition! he 2019 Coal Valley Team consists of Stan Murry, John Kelly, Jason Newman, Ryan Groat, Brent Maschke, Kevin Delorme and Alex Beaupre. Coal Valley was fortunate enough to win the 2019 Provincial Competition in Spruce Grove and the Team is honoured to have been invited to compete in Fernie this September. The Team Captain Stan Murry has been a Mine Rescue Member for over 20 years and is for sure the glue that holds the team together! His knowledge, passion and dedication has helped all of our Mine Rescue members become the great rescuers they are today. Alex Beaupre is the newest edition to the team and is a very valuable asset as our spare person. The other members have been dedicated to mine rescue for over five years and bring great strengths and qualities as well. We would like to wish all of the competing teams the best of luck at the Western Region Competition this year!

he Highland Valley Copper Teck Mine Rescue Competition Team is made up from regular Emergency Response Team members that provide emergency response coverage at the Highland Valley Copper mine. Those interested in participating in the offsite Mine Rescue and First Aid competitions had to go through a vigorous individual tryout process similar to a full competition in terms of tasks. The top marks earn a position on the current year’s competition team. The competition team members, bring back to the mine the experience, knowledge and skills learned from the preparation training and the competitions. Each member represents a different work area and shift at the mine and provide mentoring, inspiration and training to their fellow mine site Emergency Response Team personnel. They also pass on the importance of good leadership, teamwork, overall safety of the team and all aspects of emergency scene management. Many Highland Valley Copper Emergency Response Team personnel also are active in off-site emergency response organizations such as volunteer fire departments, part time BC Ambulance and local search and rescue. The team that is competing this year in Fernie had qualified by placing 1st at the 2018 Provincial competition held in Kimberley B.C. The team members are; Dale Konowalchuk (Capt.), Dave Potter (Vice Capt.), Brian Klohn, Dusty Kamps, Kyle Konowalchuk, Chad Lindsey, Jason Platteel and Gerry Wong (Coach).
