reasons

Small town life

Here in Sparwood, people are friendly and supportive. There is evidence everywhere you look of neighbours helping neighbours, whether it be in times of celebration or sorrow. Our town is a quiet and safe place to live with very little commute times for business, work or pleasure. We have great community clubs and organizations that support our town fully.

2

Location, location, location

Not only are we sitting in the midst of a stunning mountain backdrop, Sparwood is nestled in an area that supports all recreational benefits, whether it be fishing, hunting, snowmobiling or mountain biking. We are also in close proximity to both Fernie Alpine Resort and Wapiti Ski Hill in Elkford, leaving tremendous opportunity for all outdoor lovers. 8

3

Sparwood is a first class community

Residents of Sparwood take pride in where they live. Our community is extremely well maintained and managed. We have numerous amenities such as the new walking bridge, playgrounds, library, recreational facilities, curling rink and arena, soccer and ball fields, golf course and much more. Our Fire Hall, and Primary Health Care Centre are also very well operated.

4

Rural living with close proximity to city amenities

Here in Sparwood we can enjoy all that rural living offers. However, we are in close proximity to all the amenities of the cities. We live three hours away from an international airport, one hour away from the United States, and two hours away from major shopping. A three hour trip offers the graduates of Sparwood Secondary School the choice of many postsecondary options.

5

We live near an industry

We are privileged to be a residence that lives near an industry that offers 3500 Elk Valley residents with high paying and fulfilling jobs. Our industry provider offers numerous benefits to the community, its residents and its employees. Sparwood Guide - www.thefreepress.ca

Discovering Sparwood THE BIG GREEN TRUCK

The Terex Titan is located in the heart of Sparwood and is the key attraction in the community. The truck is one of the largest trucks in the world, and standing beside it, one cannot help but be astonished at its staggering size. The Titan was built in London, Ontario in 1973 and began its service at the Kaiser Steel iron mine in 1975 and after that was sent by train to its current home in Sparwood where it consistently hauled loads of earth exceeding 350 tonnes. In 1993 the Terex Titan retired and now sits as a public monument.

SELF GUIDED ARTIFACT TOUR Sparwood is rich in mining history. Through the self guided tour, and a stroll through Sparwood there is a lot to see and learn about the early days of Sparwood. Several artifacts and educational displays can be found scattered strategically throughout the heart of Sparwood, where families and friends can enjoy the outdoors and experience this unique, blast through the past.

MICHEL, NATAL AND MIDDLETOWN Though visually no sign of Michel, Natal and Middletown are left, they must never be forgotten as that is how Sparwood really began. People from around the world travelled to this area hearing of the prospect of a coal boom and plenty of jobs. Homes, families and futures began in these newly established villages. Sparwood first housed mine bosses, then slowly many others relocated to the tiny, but growing town. Through many ups and downs, the mining industry continued to grow and to this day is Sparwood’s main industry.

SPARWOOD’S SISTER CITY Kamisunagawa is Sparwood’s sister city. The sister city agreement to strive for economical, industrial and cultural exchange, as well as endorse friendship and understanding was signed on September 23rd, 1980 by Sparwood’s former Mayor Frank Fairclough. Many artifacts and information on Kamisunagawa can be found at the District of Sparwood’s Planning and Engineering Office.

Skiing in Sparwood F

or those who enjoy the sparkling winter snow, setting out on cross country skis is one of the best ways to check out the scenery while keeping fit. With over 10 km of groomed trails, fully maintained by Sparwood's Sunset Ridge Ski Society, this winter sport is lowimpact and a great way to spend a day with family and friends. Both skate skiing and classic are able to be done on the trails and two beginning points are available. Skiers can start at either the Whiskey Jack Office or the location of the old lodge at the former Sparwood Ski Hill. Trails are located on the property of Whiskey Jack Golf Course. As the society is not-for-profit and run completely by dedicated volunteers, memberships are an essential way for the society to keep running by proving how many people are using the trails. Memberships are very affordable and can be purchased at the Sparwood Recreation Department. For more information on the Sunset Ridge Ski Society and the trails in Sparwood contact Shelly Hume at 250.425.2404.

Iron Rails Overpass

T

his project is composed of two parts, Iron Rails Overpass and the 116 metre Elk River Bridge which along with a 500 metre trail system join to link Sparwood Heights to Sparwood’s centre with a beautiful trail system. This project allows residents to safely cross the train tracks, and rivers, while shortening the previous walk from five kilometres to less than two. All three levels of Government came together to make this project a reality. With unsurpassed views of the Elk River, mountains, and wildlife along the walk, it also is intertwined with comfort and safety throughout the walk with paved trails and lights along the path. It is ideal for bikers and joggers going to and from, or for families wanting to go on a leisurely walk. A significant part of the project was the removal of water and sewer lines from the Elk River bed for their relocation under the bridge, solving ongoing environmental concerns.

Sparwood Water Park I

n 2009, the idea of the Sparwood Water Spray Park began to be put in motion. With hundreds of hours by dedicated community volunteers and an outpouring of donations from businesses, groups and individuals the dream became a reality. In 2012, the Water Spray Park was complete and with a huge community celebration it was officially open in July, 2012. Ten year old, Sydney Nelson was honoured to cut the ribbon and the Sparwood Water Spray Park is now a highlight for kids in Sparwood and the Elk Valley. The park sits behind the Sparwood Recreation Department, and beside a play park. There are many components which leave kids with endless hours of cool water fun. Washrooms and change rooms are on site.
