Growing up in Michigan, we were only 4 hours away from Chicago and would often plan trips there for the weekend. Being someone who loves travel and loves visiting new places, one thing that draws me to large cities is the fact that there is always a sense of discovery.

2

Even though I’ve been to Chicago a number of times, this was my first visit to the Garfield Park Conservatory. Let me just say it felt like finding a hidden treasure. It was a jungle in the middle of a city, with a desert in the middle of a jungle. It was pure magic. We had a blast moving through all of the rooms and taking in all of the beauty it had to offer. 3 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

LETTER from the EDITOR Hello! hopes that we can all either be inspired or take a small step to our own best life.

Every season brings its own ebb and flow. We feel it in the way we move, the very way we breathe. I know you feel it too, though it can be hard to explain.

As we do this, we pull those around us on the journey. From colorful food spreads to pro tips that get your body moving, from outdoor entertainment to fashion help, friends, I hope we can take on this season together!

The way you wake up, stretch and get out of bed on a summer morning is so different than those in the middle of winter. Our bodies crave the change. The excitement and freshness of summer is something I wanted to remember on every page of this spread.

Maybe it’s something I haven’t said enough, but if all this inspires just ONE towards a better version of you, then I’m doing exactly what I want to do. What would the world look like if we all felt that way? What if we all lived in a way that could help even one other person beside us? I think the cumulative effect would be something that would shock us all.

Recently, I was featured in another magazine… a name you might recognize too. Oprah? One of the themes through every single issue is Live Your Best Life and, you guys, that has me thinking. It’s a phrase that resonates and yet it can mean something so different to every single one of us. That’s what I love about it… it doesn’t leave any one of us out. Though we look, act, think and respond differently, it’s something we can all move forward in, together.

So, as the temperature digits rise, we slide on our favorite sandals and explore all that the world has to give us in these warmer seasons. Let’s see what it is that we have to give back as well. Because what YOU have, who you already are, the experiences you have to share, someone else needs too.

For this Summer edition, I wanted the feelings of the seasons to come alive on every page with color, with words, with a little something for everyone with the

SPOTLIGHT:

Meg Owen is a beauty, mommy and lifestyle blogger based in Houston, TX. Her blog, Meg O. on the Go, is her outlet for sharing her latest beauty obsessions/tips, stories on motherhood, travel, style, and snippets from her personal life. No matter the budget, she commits to finding time for fabulous!

Highlighters are beautiful year round, but I like to get my glow on even more during spring and summer. Champagne colors look lovely on fair skin tones, and more bronze highlighters complement deeper skin tones. My favorite highlighter of all-time is the Ofra highlighter in Rodeo Drive!

Visit her blog at www.MegOontheGo.com or at @mego

Spruce up your skincare routine with facial oil this summer. My skin always becomes dehydrated after travel and long periods in the sun. Facial oil helps replenish moisture and gives a nice glow to the skin. They can also be layered with your existing skincare routine. Try the Derma-E facial oils!

12

A flush of blush completes any makeup look, and choosing peachy-pink blushes are spring and summer appropriate. I love the Butter Blushes from Physician’s Formula. They smell like a tropical vacation, too!

A pop of blue eyeshadow is all the rage now. Yep, you heard me right! You can avoid the ‘80s look by smudging a little along your upper or lower lash line. It gives a beautiful pop of color without being too overwhelming. If you need a wonderfully universal eyeshadow palette, you need the Jaclyn Hill Morphe Palette!

Peachy-pinky-nude lipsticks are perfect for spring and summer. They complement any makeup look or outfit, and are universally flattering on everyone. Give ColourPop Ultra Satin Lippies a try. They are beautiful and affordable at $6 a pop!

Summer our sweat free

tips

1 2

Always use a primer. Primers that have “long lasting” claims are better than pore filling primers for sweat-proof makeup. Apply your foundation when the primer is still tacky. This will help your foundation stick better and stay in place.

3

“Baking” your makeup keeps any creams and liquids from sliding off your face. Take a translucent loose powder and pack it on heavily in spots that tend to rub off quicker (under your eyes, nose, between the brows, and chin). It will look silly and like you’ve overdone it. Let the powder sit, or “bake,” for a few minutes. Then, take a fluffy powder brush and dust off excess powder. Your foundation will practically be bulletproof!

For more tips, visit her blog at www.MegOontheGo.com or at @mego

by Meg Owen

A setting spray is your best friend. Spray in between layers as you do your makeup (after foundation, after powder, and at the end when you are finished) to ensure everything is locked and loaded. Setting spray will not only help your makeup last longer, but it will reduce the cake-y look to your makeup.

T

here are days you need to just steal your family away. It doesn’t take long for routine to sneak up on you. The priority lists and daily responsibilities flood in and real connection to the “now” takes a backseat… it happens. But I want our memories to be made up of moments that sometimes “break” those rules. The late night runs to the ocean, playing in the sand, cereal for lunch and middle-of-the-night surprise wake-ups for a treat. That’s what this week was for us. Being together, unscheduled, disconnected (mostly) from outside life, but totally connected to each other. This year has been so crazy already, a busy ride for all of us. I love that we could take that time and steal away, so that my kids have the chance to remember what’s it’s like to be each other’s best friends. I can watch them play in the places that we love, unencumbered. There is so much to do in and around the Jacksonville Beach area, but more than anything, we all truly enjoyed the beach life. We spent hours and hours there, just steps from our door. And though the weather was still on the chilly side, we soaked in the sunshine, collected sea shells, built sand forts (and holes), and let the waves chase us while Aria chased the birds.

A few of our favorite Jacksonville Beach spots: TacoLu, Salt Life Food Shack, Maple Street Biscuit Company Traveling with kids is definitely more work. There are mixups and meltdowns… the emotions are inevitable. But it’s also well worth the effort. Yes, it means juggling sleep schedules, bags and sometimes attitudes; but it also builds bonds that can only happen when experiencing life and new adventure, together.

MEMORY MAKERS

There is beauty in learning to be present, in creating memories within even the smallest moments. Just like most things in life, it is an active choice that my husband and I knowingly work to make with this story we are writing as a family. e recently started back at the chiropractor again. No pun intended on the use of the word back. So, what does the chiropractor have to do with little moments and baking our favorite cookies in the kitchen? It all has to do with the word little.

It’s amazing the impact some of the smallest things in our lives have on the outcome of our lives. Take the back for example, and more specifically, the spine. Each little bone, every nerve, the smallest of parts allow the flow of essential nutrients and information to and from what could be considered the most important and essential parts of the body. A minor tweak here, a small movement there and you’re left with either optimum performance or an inhibited experience.

could be considered the most important parts of our existence, but I dare to say that a little tweak here and a minor adjustment there can make them some of the most memorable, noteworthy and the very strength or backbone of that existence. You see, when we go through the large moments in life, whether a mountain top point in our lives or the lowest of lows… what we’re made of, what we’ve invested in ourselves during the small, simple moments, the strength of who we are, our backbone, shows through. It’s what raises us back up or conversely, what helps us pull others up to the top of the mountain with us.

In life, the little moments, the smallest of things make up the backbone of our lives and experiences. They are the sum of our living, breathing parts. And little moments are the things that come and go in a flash. So, my challenge, my question, is this… what are you We can easily wish them away or hurry through doing with the little moments? because they’re taking time or energy from what 20

RECIPE One of our go-to family Sugar Cookie recipes is an old school one from Betty Crocker. It’s simple and delicious. For a summer twist we like to add a medley of diced fresh fruit on top.

⅔ cup shortening ¾ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 4 teaspoons milk 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together. Add egg and milk; beat till light and fluffy. Sift together dry ingredients; blend into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. On lightly floured surface, roll to ⅛ inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375° about 8 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly; remove. This makes about 3 dozen.

A DASH OF FUN It’s all about building connection in every moment, whether they are the small in-between times or the epic life altering times. There are an endless number of ways to master being present. Here are a few that we do our best to practice. 1. Don’t just look. Really see. 2. Don’t do it all alone. Make a way for everyone to be involved. 3. Don’t assume. Take the time to ask questions… and then actually listen. 4. Don’t wait with an answer. Really listen BEFORE responding.

MEMORIES “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.” Ralph Waldo Emerson When we look at the word spare as a noun, the value becomes less… it’s an extra thing, something not needed, excess. Alternatively, when we change our view of the limited number of minutes and moments around us and look at the word spare as a verb, the value inherently changes. The word itself metamorphoses into dealing gently with, a refrain from harming and a setting aside of those precious minutes we have – truly creating moments that become memories. 22

“A minor tweak here, a small movement there and you’re left with either optimum performance or an inhibited experience.”

SPOTLIGHT: Interview by: Tabitha Blue | Photography by: Briony Skerjance

TB - How did you get into fitness? JJ BUGGS - That’s how I expressed myself. Growing up, I was always doing something and it was a passion. After getting into martial arts, which I believe is one of the best forms of exercise, I became a blackbelt in 7 months, which usually takes about three years. I was passionate for it, and it was more than just physical fitness. A body in motion always stays in motion and a body at rest stays at rest. One of the things I’ve learned is if you’re not growing, you’re dying… and that helped me generate a passion for life, and for helping other people. I want to help as many people as I can and spread positivity. Whether it’s the clothing line that I started or it’s martial arts where I can inspire. Whether it’s smiling at someone or talking with someone about their day – there’s always a solution and I don’t want anyone to feel that putting their head down or giving up is a solution.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

J.J. BUGGS JJ BUGGS - The results of all of it have been amazing. It’s the best decision I’ve

-Henry Ford TB - Do you think positivity is a huge part of fitness? JJ BUGGS - Positivity is a HUGE part of it. There are always going to be obstacles or moments you doubt, but if you have the “yes I can” attitude, you will be successful. One of the things I’ve learned most recently from one of my mentors is the mentality of delayed gratitude. Most of us expect something to happen right away, expect results right away. They’re in such a hurry to receive, but not give. I just opened my first school, and it took me eleven years to get here. There were times I wanted to quit, times I wondered if it really was for me. But martial arts and the passion for it has always followed me and the gratification, though delayed, is so great. TB - Did you always know opening a school was part of your path? JJ BUGGS - No, I didn’t. Growing up I actually wanted to be a police officer and that stemmed from my desire to help people, protect people and make the community stronger. But once I started seeing success in younger kids of my community through training them, I knew I wanted that more. TB - The things that you wanted to see and do and accomplish as a police officer, you’re now doing, though in a totally different way than what you had imagined. You’re teaching people how to protect themselves and strengthening the community. Do you agree?

made, besides not quitting. I’ve found freedom in it. I can be proactive and not reactive. A mentor told me, “Mr. Buggs, think outside the box.” I said, “Yes, sir.” He asked if I was thinking and I said, “Yes, sir.” He said, “Mr. Buggs, there’s no box.” And that’s what being creative and being free is, no longer staying in a box. TB - Successful people have more failures than the average, but they also come out with successes… and that’s what we remember about them. So when we think outside the box, it can be scary because our minds want to go to “what if” or “failure” or try to figure out how we’ll make it happen AS we’re dreaming. But that’s dreaming in scarcity, because we’re limiting and tying those dreams to how we’re going to make it happen… adding a lid. I love the concept that there is NO BOX. What are some tips you have for changing our lives, or even our fitness goals, to a forward moving direction? JJ BUGGS - First I would say to change your mindset. A lot of people don’t want to start or begin because they are a beginner, but everyone starts somewhere! Think about when we were born, we were a beginner. Then, have a vision of what you want to accomplish. Once you have a vision, that’s what usually creates passion. Being better than I was yesterday is what I love about creating a vision; it’s forward motion.

f ini t six These are all moves that can be built into a circuit or used in different combinations. We recommend a minimum of 4 reps for each workout as you feel comfortable… but be sure to push yourself! Complete your circuit 3 times.

warm ups Take 5 minutes to warm up your muscles and get your heart rate pumping. We like to start by switching off between jumping rope (or mock jumping rope) and doing heel touch leg lifts.

mountain climbers Assume a push-up position with your arms straight and your body in a straight line from your head to your ankles. Without changing the posture of your lower back (it should be arched), raise your right knee toward your chest. Pause, return to the starting position and repeat with your left leg. That’s one rep. Alternate until you’ve completed all your reps.

26

the Classic Squat Set your feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out. Pull in your lower abs, and keep your eyes forward. Slowly bend at the knees and drop your hips to lower your body. Keep your heels flat on the floor. At the bottom of the exercise, pause for a moment and strongly push back up to the starting position, mirroring the descent. Repeat for desired number of reps.

resistance squat Grab your resistance band and place it under the balls of your feet, grasping the other end of the band in both of your hands. Set your feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out. Pull in your lower abs, and keep your eyes forward. Slowly bend at the knees and drop your hips to lower your body. Keep your heels flat on the floor. At the bottom of the exercise, pause for a moment and strongly push back up to the starting position pulling the resistance band towards your chest, mirroring the descent. Repeat for desired number of reps.

27 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

squat jacks Start standing with your feet together, hands clasped at your sides and get into a squat position. Jump your feet out and simultaneously keep your knees bent in the squat postion while lifting your arms over your head. Keep the weight in your heels, and try to keep your knees from going beyond your toes. And don’t forget to keep your chest up! Push off, using your heels, and jump back to the starting position.

corkscrew crunch Start in sitting postion with your hands behind your head. Extend your legs in front of you, holding them slightly off the floor. Lift one knee towards your chest while twisting your upper body and bringing the opposite elbow to that knee while fully extending your other leg and arm. Hold and then return back to the starting position to repeat in the opposite direction.

There are always going to be obstacles or moments you doubt, but if you have a 'Yes I Can Attitude,' you will be successful.

T HREE T HING S THAT C OUL D

DESTROY YOUR MARRIAGE By Christopher Blue | Photography by Briony Skerjance

30

It’s time for some real talk.

In our years as a married couple, and as life coaches, we’ve found that there are a few KEY ways to ruin a marriage... which means avoiding these pitfalls are key to a flourishing relationship! I’m going to spill the goods here in the hopes that as we all recognize what NOT to do, it can help in our efforts toward building a lasting, healthy marriage!

Don’t talk to your spouse!

This is a major marriage ruiner. When it comes to healthy relationships, communication is everything! One of the top reasons for marriage failure is miscommunication. Remember this… perception is reality. Each person in the marriage sees things, situations, and problems differently. The best way to combat this is to communicate exactly what you are seeing, feeling and understanding, and then LISTEN. Your spouse, contrary to your desire, is not a mind reader. Tell him/her the way you feel and make sure you’re actually listening and hearing what they are saying when they share how they feel. Put yourself in your spouse’s shoes. He/she may not have all the information you do. Give them a chance to understand where you are coming from. So, work hard at learning to listen and talk to your spouse. Your marriage depends on it.

how money is handled and come to a position of unity in our marriages. Money has to be discussed. If you haven’t discussed this and are married, a simple suggestion is to find common ground and even attend a financial class or seminar to help you get on the same page. Don’t let money, or the lack thereof, tear your marriage apart.

Don’t talk about sex!

Salt ‘n Pepa said it in the 1991 “Let’s talk about sex.” Sex is a very intimate act. It is a sign of your covenant with your spouse. It is a time when you are both most vulnerable and trusting of the other. When we misunderstand its importance in marriage, it will begin to wear your marriage down and end it. We have to be diligent to protect our sex lives in marriage. There are so many distractions in life that interfere with our ability to be intimate with our spouse. Sex can feel like heaven or hell depending on the individual. If we are not careful, we separate sex as merely a physical part of our lives though it is so much more than that. Men will compartmentalize this in the marriage, but women will have a tendency to tie it into every other aspect of marriage.

“Lust is the benefit of self at the expense of others, love is the benefit of others at the expense of self.” -Ed Cole Once again, it comes back to communication as it bleeds into sexual discussion. We must be able to talk about our desires, our likes and dislikes in the bedroom with our spouse. If you are aware of the importance of these three things in your marriage, that all truly lead back to communication with each other, you will be far above the average. Marriage isn’t without a little work – and prayer and faith – though I believe when you put in the time and effort, your marriage can truly be Heaven on Earth.

Don’t talk about money!

Money is listed as one of the biggest causes for fights in marriages today. The handling, or mishandling, of money can easily lead to communication problems if we don’t address the issues. When we are married, we are in a covenant with our spouse through the good, the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately, many marriages start out in debt and the stress and pressure of lack of funds make it go downhill from there. With the average household holding around $20,000 in debt, it’s no wonder this is a big cause for divorce in the U.S. We need to clearly address 31 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

OUTFITS 10C AIPTSEUML SE 20 WA R D R O B E It’s a new season and that means a new 10 item 20 outfit spread fit for those warmer summer months headed our way. Just like last time, I took inventory of my closet and did my best to pick items that I knew I would be able to use a multitude of ways. While I am not 100% subscribed to the capsule wardrobe movement, I personally will probably always have a lot more than 30 items to pull from in my closet. But that being said, I do recoginze the benefits to learning how to master outfit building with a smaller number of items. I, myself, have found it most helpful when it comes to packing for summer trips. Getting into the creative mindset of looking at an item and really pushing yourself to use it as many ways as you can is a fun challenge and to be honest really fulfilling. Add in the eggs one at a time, lightly beating after each one. •In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gently mix with a spoon. Gradually add half of the flour mixture to the wet ingredients; do not dump it in. •Scrape the batter into the prepared cake pans. •Bake for 25 minutes. •Meanwhile, make the simple syrup: over medium-high heat, mix together 1/2 cup lemon juice and 1/2 cup sugar until the sugar has completely dissolved. Set aside. •When the cake has finished baking, allow it to cool in the pans on a cooling rack for about 10 minutes. Remove from pan and use a fork to poke holes all over the cake. Divide the simple syrup between the two cake layers and pour over top. •Once the cakes have cooled COMPLETELY, you can layer them and frost with the cream cheese frosting. TO MAKE THE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING •8 ounces cream cheese, softened •1/2 cup butter, softened •4 cups powdered sugar •1 tsp vanilla •1 tbsp lemon juice To make the frosting: beat together the cream cheese and the butter. Add the powdered sugar one cup at a time, scraping down the sides as needed. Mix in the vanilla and 1 tbsp lemon juice.

BBQ

Recipe by Tabitha Blue | Photography by Briony Skerjance

We’re taking the backyard barbecue up a level by elevating the basic grill-friendly hot dog with DIY toppings and hot dog bar that takes you on a tour of America! Hosting people is my jam. Even when life gets busy, it’s fun to have some easy entertaining ideas on the back burner. As easy as hot dogs on the grill are, having a DIY toppings bar makes them such a great party pleaser. Giving a nod to your favorite cities with flavors from around the U.S. is just the icing. You can take the pressure off yourself and make it even easier by asking guests to bring a pack of hot dogs and toppings for their favorite city-inspired dog for a more pot-luck style gathering! It’s a great way to get conversation started as well… the why behind everyone’s choices. Set it all out there for a DIY hot dog bar, grill up the “dogs” and you’re ready to go. Finish off your BBQ platter with a variety of chips, some cut up fresh fruit (our fave is watermelon) and a fun, festive layered punch. FRESH seafood boil Recipe by Tabitha Blue | Photography by Briony Skerjance

CASUAL ENTERTAINING & EMBRACING THE MESS WE LOVE TO ENTERTAIN AND WE LOVE FOOD. PLANNING A GET TOGETHER EMBRACING THE T WO IS WHAT WE CONSIDER A SUCCESS. 57 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

“THE HAPPIEST GET TOGETHERS START WITH FULL BELLIES” Pair your seafood boil with a crisp white wine, a few loaves of fresh french bread, melted butter and a light spring salad.

58

a table full of delicious, finger-licking food, literally, surrounded by cold drinks, good friends and lots of laughs?! If you’re ready to jump in and host your first seafood boil, then stick around because we’re sharing our tips for hosting without a hitch!

1. Preparation is Key

Like any good party, a little prep work on the front end goes a long way. While all the good party fun will be happening on the big table, you’ll need a place to prep and round up your supplies. Gather up lots of napkins (simple cloth napkins or small dish towels work best for this!), extra spices including lemons and lots of butter, newspapers (to line the table), a few plates or bowls for trash, crackers or bread, tools, etc. Think a seafood boil seems like a lot of effort to pull off? We did too… until our first one. With the temperatures rising, and now that we live in the land of seafood (any coastline will feel that way!), we’ve found that a seafood boil is such a fun, simple, go-to way to entertain in the summer! What’s better than

2. Prep the Table

A seafood boil is meant to be messy, and boy is it ever! But that’s the fun and beauty of it. Line the table with butcher block paper and layers of newspaper, set out the bowls or plates for collecting shrimp tails,

59 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

shells and cobs, and don’t leave out the drinks! Keep them cold and keep them coming. Set out some small bowls of melted butter for dipping, as well as crusty bread to add another element of flavor and texture.

3. The Centerpiece… the Food The food at a seafood boil is the fun part! Not only is it lip smacking, it also doubles as a centerpiece and an activity as it’s spread out across the middle of the table for everyone to “serve themselves”! Grab a large pot or two and get the water boiling.

Just keep this recipe handy for an easy-to-throw seafood boil: -Boil a large pot of water -Add 3 tbsp (or more!) seafood seasoning -Add 12 red or new potatoes -Cut 3 lbs cooked kielbasa into 1” pieces and add to pot -Peel cloves from a head of garlic and add to the pot Cook for ten minutes -Add 4-8 ears halved corn on the cob -Add 2-4 lbs crab, chopped into pieces (optional) Cook for another five minutes -Add 3 lbs fresh, cleaned shrimp -Add 2 lemons, halved Cook another 3-4 minutes Drain water and pour contents onto a table covered in butcher or craft paper and layers of newspa per! If you’re adding lobster to your seafood boil, just cook in a separate pot and add to the table as well.

4. Time to Eat

The great thing about a seafood boil is the fun of digging in and eating with your hands. It’s the casual entertaining and embracing the mess. So go for it! Stock the table with plenty of cloth napkins, a few forks for those little bits that are hard to grab with fingers and then let the fun unfold. Plus, your table is lined with paper. So when you’re all done, just wrap up anything you need to discard with the paper and clean up is just about finished!

Blackened FISH Tostadas w/ Cilantro Lime Crema This is such a simple solution for getting dinner on the table and in a festive way that the whole family will enjoy!

Serves: 4 Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Per serving – Calories: 315 Fat: 22.5g Carbs: 33g Protein: 20g

Ingredients: 3 barramundi fillets (or other white fish) 1 1/2 cup shredded cabbage/cole slaw mix 1/2 tablespoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper cherry tomatoes (optional) 8 tostada shells 1 medium avocado 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon thyme

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 cup sour cream Juice of one lime 4 handfulls cilantro 1 clove minced garlic Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Recipe & Photography by Tabitha Blue

62

Step 2 - Combine paprika, onion powder, thyme, cayenne pepper, garlic powder and half a teaspoon of salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Prepare a sheet pan for baking by brushing it with a drizzle of olive oil, then brush thawed barramundi fillets with olive oil. Sprinkle spice mixture over the fillets. Rub the spice in to both sides of the fish. Bake fish until brown and flaky, about 8-10 minutes. Step 3 - While fish fillets are baking, place sour cream, juice of one lime, cilantro and minced garlic into a blender and mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste, as desired.

INSTRUCTIONS Step 1 - Preheat the oven to 425° F. Remove barramundi fillets from their packaging and run under cold water for a few seconds to thaw and remove ice. Use paper towel to pat each fillet dry.

Step 4 - Once fish fillets are finished baking, plate the meal by topping each tostada with shredded cabbage/ cole slaw mix. Pull apart the blackened fish fillets and place on top of the shredded cabbage. Add a slice of avocado and one to two tablespoons of the cilantro lime crema to each tostada. Top with extra cilantro, sliced cherry tomatoes (if desired) and another squeeze of lime, to taste. Notes: Can substitute tortillas for tostadas for a delicious fish taco!

STYLING TIPs We like to build our centerpieces with a base of greenery. It brings a freshness and a bit of life to your table setting. For our summer setting we decided to also mix in fresh cut grapefruit, oranges and some whole lemons for a bit of color.

PERFECT PLANNING When planning a get together, I like to sit down and map out how I want the evening to go, what I want it to look like, the atmosphere I want to create. I basically make a mini vision board full of recipe ideas, DIY’s, games, decor, etc. Basically, my first step is to have a creative brain dump. I find getting it all out and in front of me helps me to really hone in on my vision. Once I've got a plan in place, my next step is to write my lists. There are usually a few lists. I have a cleaning/ organizing list to get the house in order before guests arrive. I have a “day of ” checklist to help keep things on track. I have a grocery list for ingredients needed for the meal and a shopping list for any missing decor items. Of course, there's also the art supplies list for whatever DIY I have planned. 71 | THE FRESH EDIT summer 2018

STYLING TIPs When it comes to styling your table, don’t be afraid to use what you have around the house. For example, instead of purchasing a new table cloth for our dinner party, we decided to use a round throw beach blanket as our base. We also think it’s fun and budget friendly to mix and match our flatwear and dishes.

JUGGLE STRUGGLE B Y TA B I T H A B L U E | P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y B R I O N Y S K E R J A N C E

78

Balance. It’s a word we all know, and something we all strive for. But here’s the thing, balance is elusive. In the trifecta of work, family and self, I sometimes refer to the “balance” of it all as the juggle struggle. Many times we struggle to juggle all of the balls that we're trying to keep in the air. We think balance is evenly maintaining each one. But living a balanced life doesn’t mean juggling everything with equal time, focus and attention. For each of us, how the word plays out in our lives looks completely different. And that’s where the juggle doesn’t have to be a struggle.

It comes down to defining our priorities. When we can see balance as a fluid concept in our lives, shuffling the priority from one thing to another instead of evenly trying to hold each thing up, we can find the balance we desire without the guilt of “dropping the ball”. Our priority is what is maintained and held up in each and every season of our lives. For many of us, the over arching priority will shift seasonally. Especially with young children in the home, one of my top priorities is family (and it will always be), but in this season of life, it looks a little different. Having family as a priority with a house full of young kids will utilize a bit more of my time and attention then when they are grown into their own season of self-sufficiency. For me, it’s also a season of priority on my brand and business. A time of growth and opportunity, a period of creative learning and growing… and it means that in order to maintain that whole growing ball, it needs time and attention as well!

the struggle out of the juggle of it all isn’t about managing time, but rather, managing priorities. Finding balance isn’t about finding the time to give to everything in an equal and fair measure, but even more importantly for our own growth and quality of life, it’s about deciding what priorities get the time that we have and feeling confident that our focus is spent on what’s most important to the season of life we’re in. So, today, I’m going to give a challenge (because it’s something I’m doing myself) and I hope you’ll join me! Let’s see how scheduling your priorities can help bring a sense of balance and peace to the juggle that you manage. For the next couple of weeks, pay attention to what takes up your time and adjust your schedule to your priorities, instead of just trying to prioritize your schedule, because when that happens it ends up filling with everyone else's priorities as well. I’d LOVE to hear what difference it makes in your life! Share your thoughts with me via email (hello@freshmommyblog.com) or on social media, you can find me @TabithaBlue. Don't forget to use the Hashtag #thejugglestruggle too and let’s see how scheduling your priorities can jumpstart your productivity and quality of life!

What’s crazy is that the priorities for each can shift daily, or sometimes hourly. I like to schedule out time for work where I can truly focus, knowing that someone else (usually my husband) has his priority on the kids and family at that moment. Alternatively, knowing that I’ve prioritized time in my day for my family, without the distraction of electronics or work conversations is something that’s become important to me, to my kids and for our sanity as a big family.

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” — Stephen Covey

For the longest time, and goodness I’m STILL working on this, I thought that if only I had more time, if I got up earlier, stayed up later, learned to multi-task better (another falsity, there is no such thing as TRULY multi-tasking, but that’s for another time,) fit a little more into the crevices of my time, then I could be more successful, more accomplished and truly do it all. I felt that if I did more, then I would always be that much closer to achieving my dreams, while having the perfect home, meal plan, etc. As it turns out, I was focusing on the wrong thing. Taking

Fresh Manifesto We will not be afraid to create something. Everyday. There will be good and there will be bad, so we will choose to see the good. As long as we have a pulse, we will have a passion. We won’t let our story end before we do. We will keep writing it, filling the pages with laughter, adventure, and love. For there is nothing g reater than a life well loved. We believe that every day is an opportunity to move closer to your dreams, to try something new, a new stillness, a new food, a new hobby, a new destination, a new coffee. And then just as we breathe in the scent of something good, we will savor it. We will talk to strangers, be a child again, take risks, and embrace failure as our teacher. We will talk less and listen more. Choosing to see beauty where others don’t. Planning to live life to the fullest, planning to live freely, and love hard. We will seek out every opportunity to be amazed.
