ART

CELEBRATION: A stage for the best performing artists from all over the region and the world.

The Doctor Phillip’s Center for the Performing Arts + The Orlando Ballet

!

EDUCATION: Everyone who visits will leave inspired, informed and energized.

By Alexis Minieri

!

The Doctor Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (DPAC) fuses many of Orlando’s most talented artists by showcases their finest work, allowing for audiences to be memorized by an assortment of the arts. Whether it be the Orlando Philharmonic orchestra, or critically acclaimed comedians, DPAC exposes Orlando residents to local and national talent alike.

PARTICIPATION: Visitors are not spectators – they are active participants who contribute to the collective experience.

!

DESTINATION: A place in Central Florida where Floridians and visitors of all ages will come for world-class entertainment.

The Orlando Ballet, which began in 1974 as The Performing Arts Company of Florida, debuts many of their performances at DPAC. The Orlando Ballet started with twelve young, non-paid dancers and only $4,000. Today, Orlando Ballet is Central Florida’s only fully residential professional ballet company and performs its annual season at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. This fall season, the Orlando Ballet will début “Peter & The Wolf,” Saturday morning Oct. 18. This hourlong production is designed with young audiences in mind, and portray exquisite story telling through a combination of world-class ballet, opulent sets, and costumes. Families can enjoy arts and crafts, face painting and other activities an hour before each performance. Another performance to look forward to is this season’s “Vampire’s Ball,” the weekend of Oct. 17 through 19, rife with familiar Halloween themes and elements, it features thrilling yet theatrical choreography with a vast cast of zombies and vamps that will guide you though a spooky journey in dance. The company consists of 21 dancers and four apprentices. Robert Hill, the artistic director, has been with the company since 2009 and has since carried out his vision of making ballet relevant to today’s audiences by blending entertainment with classical ballet.

!

“[The Orlando Ballet] is like my third child,” said Harriett Lake, the school’s leading philanthropist; she has so much love for the Ballet. Recently the Orlando Ballet has been rehearsing at a new location, the Lockhaven Community Center, which will soon by their new home. Lake donated $2 million dollars to fund the new ballet center in hopes that someone will match the price. The new center will soon be available to be rented for events, which will cover the costs to allow for the Orlando Ballet to take their performances to the next level. Doctor Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (DPAC) will showcase the Orlando Ballet’s performances this season, as well as those in 2015.

On Nov. 8 and 9, we'll be hosting a community open house as part of the Dr. Phillips Center Grand Premiere presented by Dr. Phillips Charities and Balfour Beatty Construction. Guests will take self-guided tours and explore the Della Phillips Grand Lobby, the Walt Disney Theater, the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, and the Seneff Arts Plaza. Mark your calendar now. VOICE Q: What do you look for in aspiring models?

!

When looking for models, we typically look for the basics such as height, body type, great skin, beautiful smile, and of course a great personality. It’s also important that the talent has a strong work ethic because being successful in this industry takes more than being just another pretty face.

!

Q: What can we expect to see come out of Benz Models?

!

For the local market, we will continue to be leading the industry with great models and acting personalities, and you can expect to see more from us on a national film/television level very soon. We’ll also continue to develop top models

Q: What piece of advice can you give aspiring models?

Kira handles everything with poise. She sees potential in fresh faces and mentors them to the top. There is no stopping this beauty from living her dreams and passionately guiding her talent.

!

I would have to say that you should be realistic. Know what markets you’re right for, work on improving your self - both physically and mentally – and most of all, stay patient and trust the process. Also, one important thing is to be prepared for rejection. It’s all a part of the business s just stick to your goals, work hard and

I’d have to say Jessica Sikosek is one of our top models and she is a perfect example of someone deserving every accomplishment. We signed her when she was almost 16 and now at 19 years old and 5’8’’, she has had amazing success in a short time frame. She’s placed with the best agencies worldwide and possesses a unique beauty both physically and in spirit. She also has amazing energy and such a warm, friendly personality.

FASHION

The PARK AVE FASHION WEEK story By Alexis Minieri

!

Just as the runway show began, so did the heavy rain on the first Park Avenue Fashion Week (PAFW) on Oct. 6, 2007. Everyone ran for cover into the Winter Park Welcome Center, and the show was rescheduled for Nov. 10.

!

“We Learned a great deal from [that] experience,” Debra Hendrickson of the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce. From then on a tent was built each year to make certain that the fashion show would, in fact, go on, rain or shine. Since then, the park has been completely transformed with a 20,000 square foot tent, full runway and lounge area for VIP guests and an Emerging Designers Contest to showcase local talent. The first tent in 2008 was not air-conditioned, but they learned from this, too. Each year after this, they made sure to supply a fully air-conditioned tent, sheltering the attendants from any weather curve balls Florida can throw. Each year is meant to outdo the last.

!

“The tent layout has changed from year to year,” Hendrickson said, “as we have grown and developed new venues within the tent such as our sky lounges and VIP lounges.” The winner of the Emerging Designer Contest kicked off the evening’s runway show. The past winners include Maria Roman in 2010, Rhonda Spears in 2011, Melissa Vivo in 2012 and Lile Useche in 2013. These designers where chosen among three finalists to be the most talented of the applicants in the state of Florida.

!

More improvements were made when Harriett Lake started sponsoring the event. “I’m like a loose cannon when it comes to great clothes,” Lake said about her love for fashion. Harriett has attended PAFW since its conception in 2007, however it was not until 2009 that she became Title Sponsor for the event.

!

The event became known as Harriett’s Park Avenue Fashion Week honoring Harriett Lake’s contribution to the Fashion Community. She has continued to support PAFW each year since. From this point on, PAFW was taken to the next level, and became the biggest fashion event of the southeast.

For general inquiries email: pafw@shelmarkspr.com or call: 772.222.7614

!

A model casting was added in 2009 to secure the top talent in the area. Hundreds of professional and up and coming models were giving the opportunity to walk the runway at the show.

!

The purpose of PAFW is to showcase Park Avenue retailers and the fashion merchandise they sell as well as to bring customers to Park Avenue and showcase the Park Avenue brand.

!

This year’s PAFW will be Oct. 25 through Nov. 1, with the fashion show on the last day of the event. This year’s event will support the Foundation for Foster Children, and is sponsored by Harriett Lake.
