Tuesday, March 9, Gulfport voters narrowly decided to retain their representatives on Gulfport City Council for Ward 2 and Ward 4.

The unofficial results were close, but with 100% of votes in before 7:30 p.m., incumbents Christine Brown, Ward 2, and Michael Fridovich, Ward 4, claimed victory.

People who dream of being journalists often picture themselves living a Woodward and Bernstein-esque life, exposing corruption and seeing their writing splashed across the front page of the New York Times.

Rarely do 21-year-old journalism students envision themselves taking pictures at Little League opening day; I know I didn’t.

But here’s the thing about journalism: It isn’t a one-size-fits-all career.

Some people love deep-dive investigative pieces (that’d be our reporter Ryan McGahan) while others love writing about food (that’d be Morgan Banno or Jen Ring). Still others, despite joking with their boss that they did not go to college to take pictures of kids playing T-Ball, find themselves utterly charmed by the concentration with which a fouryear-old can swing at a ball that isn’t even moving.

I loved all three when I wrote for the Gabber, but it was when I bought a house around the corner from the ballfield that I started to understand that Little League epitomizes Gulfport. It’s neighbors and community and small-town fun, and it’s not just for parents and players. When we walk the dogs in the evening or sit on the porch with a cocktail, the sounds of kids playing ball and cheering each other on reminds us we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

For the kids playing – albeit on fewer teams this year – the new season brings with it new uniforms, new skills to master and a chance to see old friends. Especially for kids who attend virtual school, Little League offers them a chance to learn what it means to be part of a team, and to develop social skills.

Little League means something different to us. It’s the heart of who we are and the best things we believe about Gulfport.

This Saturday, please join us at Gulfport Little League’s opening day ceremonies. They’ll have free food (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soft drinks) for everyone. Yes, everyone – not just players or parents or coaches, but every person who wants to celebrate what it means to be part of our community.

Think about how great those kids will feel to see those bleachers filled (socially distanced, of course) with smiling faces. Bring a blanket and spread out along the fence to enjoy lunch. Close your eyes and listen to people cheering a fouryear-old to first base, or shouting when a player hits her first home run.

That’s the sound of Gulfport.

voices Great Work on the Garden Tour Dear Editor: Just want to thank [the Gulfport Merchants Chamber] for thinking out of the box and putting in the time to keep the Gulfport Flamingo Tour alive and well during the COVID-19 pandemic. My friends and I enjoyed strolling through the gardens as much as we have enjoyed the homes in the past. The homeowners were relaxed and welcoming, eager to share their knowledge. The tour book was the best ever. The large photos, colorful ads, and delightful write ups made for a quality tour book that to me reflected Gulfport’s lively spirit. Do You Know the Lions Club?

Dear Editor: There have been several comments and opinions made by city council members and local citizens regarding the Gulfport Lions Club building. These recent comments and opinions have made me think….I wonder how much our community really knows about our Gulfport Lions Club?

Our club has been a part of this community since 1948. The city allowed the club to build its clubhouse on this land mostly because its location was not considered a “prime location.” The club built the building that stands today with monies raised by selling $100 bonds to members and others in the community.

Now to the present. Our Lions Club, and its “sister” charitable organization, Lions Club of Gulfport, FL Foundation, Inc. (501(c)(3)) are responsible for fundraising monies that benefit our community.

Our pancake breakfasts, shrimp boils, spaghetti dinners and craft fair are the means upon which we raise money. Profits from these events are earmarked only to fund these charitable needs and no other items. Here are just some of the organizations we support and the

amounts provided over the past two years: Eye Exams, and if, needed eye surgery for qualifying Gulfport residents ($300); Tampa Eye and Tissue Bank ($650); Gulfport Police Operation Santa Fund ($3,000); Gulfport Little League ($1,000); Gulfport Senior Center Food Pantry ($2,000); Gulfport Historical Society ($1,000); Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision ($350); Southeastern Guide Dogs ($800).

We also rent the clubhouse for weddings, graduations, family reunions and celebrations of life.

Funds from these events help to

maintain the repairs to the clubhouse. Our quarterly dues fund our business expenses and if needed additional repairs to our building.

This fiscal year due to COVID-19, we have not been able to raise as much money, but we are determined to still help as much as possible.

Gulfport Council Approves Lift Station Generator and Spring and Summer Events

The March 2 Gulfport City Council meeting concluded in under 90 minutes as council quickly ran through five resolutions related to upcoming events and the city’s ongoing sewage system maintenance.

The council approved a $39,000 payment to Paramount Power to cover a rented generator needed for one of the city’s lift stations. The generator at the sewage pumping plant next to the Gulfport Recreation Center failed in early December and could not be repaired, so the city rented a replacement, which it plans to use through April until a new permanent generator can be installed. Council also approved a Fiscal Sustainability Plan for ongoing maintenance to the city’s sewage system over the next 10 years.

Council Continues Sewage System Repairs

Events and Programs Council signed off on its annual Summer Recreation program, which looks after children during seven of the eight weeks of summer vacation. Due to COVID delays in the school year, summer break this year starts June 9 and ends August 10.

Gulfport residents can get a 25% discount when signing their children up for the program, if their child receives free or reduced lunch at school or another form of financial aid.

Council also approved O’Maddy’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, the annual March 17 event that was shut down last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Ward 1 Councilmember April Thanos called O’Maddy’s owner Joe Guenther up to the podium to answer questions she had about the COVID safety precautions the restaurant was taking for the event.

a fence, with two entrances, and “when the guest enters the area, their temperature will be taken, they’ll be required to wear a mask anytime they’re standing up or walking around… tables will be six feet apart… there will also be staff walking around making sure folks are wearing their masks,” Guenther said.

Council approved the event, with Thanos dissenting out of fear that it will be “too much of a spreader event.”

Council unanimously approved the application for the Gulfport Merchants Chamber’s Pink Flamingo Garden Tour, which took participants through a series of Gulfport’s gardens on March 6.

Thanos is not a GMC board member, but is on the planning committee for the Pink Flamingo tour.

When asked whether or not she should have recused herself from the vote on the event, Thanos told the Gabber that she had asked the city manager and the city attorney that question well before the vote came before council. According to Thanos, she was told that because she does not profit from the Pink Flamingo tour in any way, she did not need to recuse herself from the vote.

Even if she weren’t part of the planning committee, Thanos said she would have voted for the tour, because it was “a masked and socially distanced event.”

Overheard at the March 2 Gulfport City Council Meeting “I really want to thank the city manager for agreeing to meet with Margo and myself and for the approval of the very first ‘Art in the Yard.’ If you haven’t heard, that’s gonna be March 27, and that’s going to be the first opportunity for actual local Gulfport artists to put out art in their own yard to sell it without the need for any special permits; it will be an outside event with very limited hours, 10 to 2 … The only rule is that people can put up their art, how good it is, or how not-so-good it is, but it must be made by them, no resale of any items at Art in the Yard.” – Karen Love “I’ve been up here a number of times speaking to city council – I think this is number seven or eight – about Boca Ciega Yacht Club and the disgusting attitude they have towards our community … Mr. O’Reilly, you did receive the letter from 11 women from Boca Ciega Yacht Club explaining gender discrimination, and still you did nothing as our human rights officer.” – Ray Rodriguez on what he claims is a pattern of antisemitism, ableism, and sexism stemming from Boca Ciega Yacht Club, and what he says is the city’s refusal to provide him documents related to BCYC. The Pinellas County Office of Human Rights did perform an investigation on behalf of Rodriguez in 2019, but found “insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations of unlawful discrimination.” City Manager Jim O’Reilly responded by say-

ing the city provides as much documentation to the public as they are legally allowed.

“The other thing I wanted to bring up… is to add something to our council meeting rules about not having any talk about campaigns either from the public or from us, during the council meetings. We could have a lawyer draw something for us to review, since that’ll be coming up after the election, when we adopt our new council rules.” – Councilmember April Thanos, as part of her closing statement. Mayor Sam Henderson agreed with the idea, saying it had “always just kinda been the rule,” but had never been adopted formally.

“I don’t have any comments other than enjoy your health, enjoy the people around you – you never know how long you’ve got them. I’ve been spending some time with my father in Texas at the beginning of this year; his health is failing, he’s not doing too great. It’s hard to see someone you thought was so strong, so resilient, finally succumb to some things. So appreciate your loved ones, and appreciate the health that you have now, even if it may not be where you want it to be. If we’re still above ground it’s a good day.” – Mayor Sam Henderson in his closing comments

Ward 2 Christine Brown headed the race with 52.38% of the vote, accounting for 1420 ballots.

“Our community showed that they believe in the goodness of Gulfport,” Brown told the Gabber on Tuesday night. “Many thanks to go around.”

Mike Bauer lost with 47.62% of the vote, or 1291 total ballots.

“I don’t think Gulfport is ready for me yet,” Bauer said following the results Tuesday night. “I’m all about forward thinking, and I don’t care who is on council, but there is so much that needs to be addressed in Gulfport and St. Petersburg.”

Ward 4 Michael Fridovich faced two challengers and retained his seat with a

less-than-majority victory: 43.38% of the vote, or 1299 ballots.

“I feel good. I appreciate all the support from the people of Gulfport,” Fridovich said. “I have no agenda. I’ve said that from day one. I just appreciate the community here.”

Challenger Ian O’Hara was a close second with 40.15% of the vote, or 1,078 total votes.

In his third attempt for a Gulfport Council seat, Richard Fried garnered 11.47% of the vote, or 308 ballots.

Neither Brown nor Fridovich held election night parties due to COVID-19 precautions.

“I didn’t feel comfortable having that many people together while we are still in the midst of the coronavirus,” Fridovich said.

Pink Flamingo Tour Offers a Glimpse of Gulfport’s Gardens

“I’m from New York City, but I wanted to do something that represents the spirit of Gulfport,” Gaia Banovich said. “It’s whimsical, it’s artistic.”

The Pink Flamingo Tour of Gardens, an all-outdoor iteration of the traditional Pink Flamingo Tour of Homes, met a stroke of bad weather and unfortunate luck on Saturday, March 6.

Despite on-and-off showers that lasted most of the 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. event, attendees marched on with umbrellas and rain-resistant gear.

“We were very pleased with the success, considering the circumstances,” said Andrea Knettle, board member for the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the fundraising event.

Luck of the Irish in Gulfport

The Story of How Homegrown Clovers Traveled the World Earlier this year, Gulfport Historical Society welcomed a charming donation from a longtime Gulfport resident: a lucky clover keyring from Gulfport’s original “green” business, Daniels Clover Specialty Company.

Some say the four-leafed clover’s magic dates all the way back to Eden, when Eve snuck a shamrock out of Paradise to remember it by.

Daniels Clover Specialty Company traveled nearly as far, originating in the Panama Canal Zone, where Charles T. Daniels worked as a telephone wire chief for the US government in the 1930s.

Growing clover began as hobby.

But when Charlie’s daughter, Marion, placed a dried clover in a card for her boss, US Consul to Panama Herbert O. Williams, an idea for a new business was born.

Daniels transformed his floricultural talent into a unique enterprise, developing new methods for cultivating, sizing and chemically treating and preserving four-leaved clovers, which could then be inserted into cards, calendars and a large assortment of gift items for corporate customers.

Daniels Clover Specialty Company came to Gulfport in 1953, where it took root and thrived at 4904 9th Ave. S. Daniels clovers were shipped by the thousands to companies from Australia to Jamaica to South Africa, most notably to a German pharmacy chain, drogerie markt (dm), which used them to make novelty calendars for their customers (“A lucky charm for you – and your wallet!”).

The company’s unlikely success – described in one of its brochures as a true “Cinderella story” – attracted national attention, with profiles and stories appearing over the years in Time Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, National Geographic and The New York Times.

When Charles’s children – William, Charles and Marion – sold the company in 1983, the new owners Andy and Dandy Safko kept the Clover Specialty legacy alive, entering their fashionable four-leaf clover

Though the business moved out of Gulfport in 2008, it is still thriving just up the road as Clover Specialty Company in the Riviera Bay neighborhood (and online at fourleafclover.com). And while headlines about this much-beloved business have indulged in some delightful word-

play over the years – “A Lucky Crop Charms Millions,” “Family Is Just Rolling in Clover,” etc. – Dandy Safko may have had it just right when she told the Evening Independent in 1983, “This is a business that has to be handled with tender, loving care.”

Careful cultivation, as much as good fortune, has helped this extraordinary piece of Gulfport’s history grow. Indeed, it would be hard to find a better illustration of the old adage that we make our own luck.

Vaccines in Gulfport

Senior Center Popup Hits Roadblocks, Remains Successful On Friday, March 6, a line into Gulfport’s Multipurpose Senior Center stretched around the parking lot; Gulfport police manned the area, orange cones and Senior Center staff directed the crowd as they filled out COVID-19 vaccine consent forms.

The COVID-19 vaccine popup, a combined effort of the City of Gulfport, the Gulfport Senior Center and Pinellas County Emergency Management, upped the number of doses from 600 to 660 following an explosion of registrations after the site was announced last week.

The appointment window stretched from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and the line was still kicking with registrants 65 and older and hopeful bystanders betting on extra doses.

“We have such a good relationship with our seniors here in Gulfport.

The team at Pinellas Emergency Management said because of that, we were the only city they considered doing this with,” said Senior Center Director Rachel Cataldo.

Gulfport and Pinellas previously worked with leadership at Town Shores, a 55-plus community, to bring vaccines on February 10 to seniors who struggled with the online registration system.

Call Center Down For this vaccine popup, city and county officials planned to install a two-day temporary call center Thursday, February 25 and Friday, February 26.

Unfortunately, that effort stalled almost as soon as it started: The call center crashed and organizers moved registration to five outdoor booths in the Senior Center parking lot.

“When that happened we were all like, ‘Well, we have to figure something out.’” Cataldo said. “We packed up and came out here, and people were just happy to be able to secure their appointments.”

The four-line call center was initially set up at Gulfport City Hall, with 16 additional lines forwarded to city officials, including Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly.

O’Reilly, who watched his 81-yearold father-in-law struggle with getting the vaccine, knows firsthand how hard the process has been for seniors.

“We are glad to help,” O’Reilly said.

Organizers sent newsletters and emails to qualifying seniors and 55plus communities. Phone lines were set to begin signing people up at noon.

At 12:01 p.m., the call center began receiving 23 calls per second, and nearly immediately went down.

After alerting seniors, the center moved registration to the outdoor booths and officials went to work personally calling individuals.

“It was such a number of people that called,” said O’Reilly. “The people we did reach were appreciative to speak to someone.”

In the Waiting Line “I’ve been taking vaccinations my whole life,” said St. Petersburg resident John Elis. “This isn’t any different.”

The mood of those waiting in line on March 5 was more or less one of relief. Seniors who had trouble accessing the vaccine registration website were now being catered to, close to home.

“I didn’t use the call center at all,” said St. Petersburg senior Pam Hayes. “A friend signed me up in person, and here I am finally.”

According to Cataldo, those who got their dose on March 5 will get their second shots Friday, March 26.

At this time, no future popup of this kind is in the works for the city.

“The phone lines going down was frustrating to say the least,” Cataldo said. “I like everything to run perfectly, but we got the vaccinations and it all worked out regardless.”

Kids Barber Book Club Gets Buzz Central Station Barbershop & Grooming, a tiny building nestled in the Grand Central District, at 2325 Central Ave., looks like any traditional barber’s.

A closer look reveals children’s books slanted on shelves, literature neatly stacked next to razors and photos of hair designs.

Central Station Barbershop owner Antonio Brown has been promoting children’s reading in his shop since 2016; in recent months, COVID-19 propelled him to revamp his Barber Shop Book Club and provide free books to children.

“A lot of boys don’t like to read; they think it’s boring,” Brown said.

“If you encourage them to try, it promotes confidence and self esteem.”

On Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Brown’s shop is alive with book club kids reading aloud in his chairs; they get a free haircut and bring home the reading material.

“Once they read to me, I buy them lunch, give them gift cards – the types of encouragement changes frequently,” Brown said. “It always feels great, watching these kids excel.”

Recent Buzz In the beginning years, the book club had only a handful of participants, but word of Brown’s dedication has spread throughout the St. Petersburg area.

The Gulfport Kiwanis Club ran a book drive for the shop, collecting Black-positive books from February 6 to 19. Books flooded in with content rich in Black history and leaders, hair positivity and selflove.

“The kids love it. Self-esteem isn’t always there, so we have to promote it,” Brown said. “I’m just grateful to be giving back in a different kind of way.”

Since launching the concept, Brown has worked with nonprofits such as the Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation and inspired 10 other Pinellas County barbershops to participate in the book club.

The goal?

Five hundred Florida barbers participating in the book club, with their own literary collections, is the goal.

That number might be easier to achieve with the approval of a $270,000 grant from the Florida Department of Education, which is currently in the request process.

The approval of the grant, led by Pinellas County Representative Michele Rayner, would lead to more books, staffing and an increase in affiliated barbers.

Tropicana Field Redevelopment Plans Shortlisted as City Seeks Public Input

There were seven possible visions for the Tropicana Field Development Project; as of Monday, March 8, there are four.

The handful of developers have made the city’s shortlist, which is a compiled roster of possibilities for the sprawling, 86-acre piece of land.

The options are now down to proposals by MA Ventures/ Sugar Hill Community Partners; Midtown Development; Portman-Third Lake; and Unicorp National Development.

“Four submissions clearly stood out as truly exceptional and I am excited for our residents to learn more about each one,” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman in a statement to the press.

The permanent location of the Tampa Bay Ray’s is still uncertain.

“The future of that site, with or without baseball, has never

been brighter. As I’ve said time and again, this is our chance to get it right, and to right wrongs,” Kriseman said.

Regardless, there’s still a long way to go. In the coming months, the city will hold public meetings and accept community comments to ensure a supported decision.

The city will hold a virtual meeting on Monday, April 5 and two in-person meetings on Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8.

“I encourage everyone to remain engaged in this process as we move forward,” Kriseman said.

Fresh Fabric, A Floating Tiki Bar and McDonald’s Gets a Makeover

COVID-19 pressed pause on Karen Donnelly’s brick-and-mortar fabric shop, Fabric Smart. It was a shift for the Gulfport business, but not the end.

The store, located at 5401 Gulfport Boulevard, shut down last March.

Donnelly moved completely online, working on orders from home with the help of an assistant, Natty Moss Bond.

The shop opened back up this March, by appointment only, and with the enforcement of a double-masking policy.

“We’re opening gradually and safely,” Donnelly said.

Over the span of the pandemic, Donnelly received a $1,000 grant from the City of Gulfport that went into effect last May, and is still paying Fabric Smart’s water and garbage fees.

Business picked up with a new fabric necessity: masks.

“We suddenly had the materials everyone needed for masks – 100 percent cotton,” Donnelly said. “For months I was working on orders from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.”

This wasn’t the first time Donnelly had to rely on online orders to save her compromised immune system.

The shop owner was working as a music teacher at a Pinellas County elementary school when she started falling ill; rheumatoid arthritis medication had weakened her immune system. She retired from teaching in 2005 and began selling fabric online.

St. Pete Tiki Tours is adding a new spin to tours of local waterways.

“I was sewing my own clothes at the age of 12, and I always loved art,” Donnelly said. “I did this as a means to make a living, and it was successful.”

Today, the small shop has grown to an online and physical location with more than 1,500 fabrics.

“I can’t say thank you enough to Gulfport and my customers for supporting me throughout,” Donnelly said. “I feel proud to be part of this.”

Float on On March 8, local waterways officially welcomed the latest novelty tour – an enormous floating Tiki bar.

The six-person tour departs from the Bay Pines Marina, and cruisers meet on the boardwalk at 5000 92nd St. N. The concept, St. Pete Tiki Tours, is the brainchild of “boat people” Kyle Travis and Logan McKenna.

McKenna, a certified Captain of the U.S. Coast Guard, drives the boat. Travis’s family has owned the marina and the surrounding mobile home park since the 1950s.

The two have known each other since pre-school, and after decades of fishing trips together, they decided to go all in.

“Sunsets really seem to put things in perspective for people; they slow things down,” Travis said.

“Tiki bars symbolize relaxation, so we rolled with that.”

The only McDonald’s in Gulfport, at 5111 Gulfport Blvd S., is a staple of fast food on the busy street.

On Wednesday, March 10, the red-and-yellow icon will be completely bulldozed and redone in the span of 75 days, optimistically.

“Gulfport has supported that restaurant and we have an opportunity to better serve them,” said Bob Conigliaro, community relations specialist with the store.

“Quite honestly, that location has aged.”

According to Conigliaro, it takes Karen Donnelly’s small but heavily followed fabric shop has done more than withstood going virtual, it’s thrived.

75 to 90 days to rebuild a McDonald’s. The store closed at midnight on March 10, and is hoping to return by June 26.

“That’s without Mother Nature’s say,” Conigliaro said.

The location will return with state-of-the art equipment, and a new spot on the parking lot that

will allow for easier flow of traffic.

In the meantime, employees will work at one of the 61 restaurants that franchise owner Blake Casper heads.

“It’s insane to think that can all be done in a few months, but it has before and it will again,” Conigliaro said.

Fruit headdresses, saturated lighting, 70s disco pumps – Stephanie Agudelo takes posed photography a step farther with surrealism and an affection for bright colors.

Agudelo was 15 years old when she picked up a camera for the first time. At 30, the St. Petersburg-based photographer is practicing her art around the clock between working as an art curator at Coastal Creative, a local media studio.

“I started taking photos candidly, because I always liked the idea that a photograph stores a moment in time forever,“ Agudelo said. “As I’ve explored more, I realized I like creating that moment.”

Sporting signature curls and eccentric hues, Stephanie Agudelo is not afraid of self portraits.

Originally from New Jersey, she doesn’t label herself a native northerner. Agudelo and her family moved from New Jersey to their native home of Columbia before coming back to the states – specifically, the Sunshine State.

She did her time studying the arts, and received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at the University of South Florida before settling in St. Petersburg.

“I think St. Pete has changed my art in the best way,” Agudelo said.

“You’ll notice a lot of fruits in my images. It started when I placed a kiwi in between my subjects’ pantyhose – I liked the color, the surrealism.”

Agudelo didn’t stop with fruit. Her

subjects are typically surrounded with props: a disco ball, bubble gum, anything that strikes interest. The shots are direct: There’s stark eye contact amongst the shimmering makeup and tinted glosses.

“I will and have shot men, but women are more willing to get behind the camera and work with bright colors and makeup,” Agudelo said. “I just focus on the passion in my work.”
