Not-So-Affordable Housing
By Patrick Heinzen and Sebastián González de León y León
The City of St. Petersburg plans to build thousands of what it calls “affordable” housing options. Innovare, pictured here, opened with 50 units offered to people 60% area median income or less.
Are St. Petersburg’s plans for affordable housing going to yield apartments people can actually afford? It’s complicated.
The City plans to introduce 2,072 new housing units over the next 10 years. The City designated 1,509 of
those units as “affordable.”
The housing affordability issue gets confusing, as the unit cost and available units depend greatly on income. But what is affordable housing?
The City defines affordable hous-
ing based on percentages of area median income (AMI).
According to the City’s communications team, anything below 80% of St. Petersburg’s AMI is considered affordable housing. However,

Council Concerns
I love Gulfport and The Gabber. I was thrilled when my picture taken in Philadelphia with my son and his roommate, whose grandmother also happens to live in Gulfport, appeared.
However, I have found your coverage of the re-election race of Council person April Thanos to be less than fair. She won her third election to the Gulfport Council by a huge margin despite the attempts by her opponent and his supporters to smear her name.
She is honest and hard-working and Gulfport voters know it. She won by a landslide! The May 16 article with the headline, “Bribery Allegations Unfold with Links to Gulfport Council” “Reports Tell New Information Regarding Council Member” is very misleading to say the least! April is not corrupt, but most people will not read all the way to the
end of the article to understand that. Align your headlines with the truth, please.
—Betsy Morris Levin, St. Petersburg
Editor’s note: To clarify, this letter may confuse anyone who did not read the original article, which discussed a police report stating a current council member suggested offering money in exchange for coverage. The article did not suggest April Thanos had anything to do with a bribe, real or alleged, as it dealt wholly with her opponent’s campaign against her.

St. Pete Modern Dentistry: Advanced Care for Your Teeth and Radiance for Your Skin
We all know that a trip to the dentist leaves your teeth feeling and looking great, but at St. Pete Modern Dentistry, doctors Elena Gutu and Anna Shoopak also use their tools and expertise for something just as important – your skin.
Thanks to new FDA approval, a state-of-the-art laser for dentistry is now the latest – and perhaps most effective – new tool for facial resurfacing. And only dentists have it.
The Waterlase iPlus has been a feature of St. Pete Modern Dentistry’s practice since 2016.
“Lasers do different things based on their wavelengths,” says Dr. Gutu. “Chiropractors use lasers, dermatologists use lasers – they’re all different wavelengths. The wavelength of our laser – what we use for many dental procedures – happens to also be excellent for fractional facial resurfacing.”
With fractional resurfacing, the key is in the name. While part of the skin is treated with the laser, the untreated surrounding cells help heal and renew it, improving your skin’s appearance more evenly, and more gently, than other laser treatments.
“The treatment works at the most superficial layer of the skin – where we have a lot of dead skin cells and minor imperfections – and it also works on a slightly deeper level,” says Dr. Gutu, who joined Dr. Shoopak in advanced certification for the procedure. “The end result, you have new, fresh skin, which looks radiant.”
Fractional laser application stimulates new collagen and elastin, treating a range of skin issues on the face, neck, and décolletage, including skin dullness, redness, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and other imperfections. The improvements are remarkable, and the down time is minimal.
“The immediate results can look a little like a sunburn, so for some people that might mean a few days of ‘social’ downtime, but much less
than other resurfacing procedures. You could have it done on a Friday,” says Dr. Gutu, “and by Monday have no problem being social.”
And good news if you don’t want to sacrifice comfort for beauty: fractional resurfacing is painless. Unlike lasers used in other skin treatments, the Waterlase iPlus is water-based, which helps cool the skin and ease discomfort.
“We also apply a numbing cream before,” says Dr. Gutu. “When the procedure is done, the skin may feel tight or cold, but there is no burning and no pain.”
Plus, it’s convenient. The whole procedure takes about a half an hour, making it an easy addition to your regular dental appointment.
“People may think that anything to do with the skin, you go to a dermatologist,” says Dr. Gutu, “but they may
not realize that dentists also work intimately with facial muscles and skin. We’re very knowledgeable about this part of the body, and we are the only ones who have this tool.”
Fractional laser resurfacing joins the bevy of state-of-the-art treatment and personalized care for which St. Pete Modern Dentistry is already known, including 3D imaging, cosmetic dentistry, and implant restorations, as well as Botox for facial esthetics, and advanced Botox applications to treat teeth clenching and grinding, jaw pain, and TMJ. The practice also offers Invisalign and KöR, a next-level whitening treatment.
“When you look good, you feel good, so facial resurfacing is a natural addition to all that we offer our patients,” says Dr. Gutu. “It’s one more thing to make them smile.”

Somebody to Lien On Liens
Forgiven, Permits Paid, and Donations Received
By Patrick Heinzen
On May 21, Gulfport City Council agreed to forgive almost $60,000 in liens against the owners of Lincoln Cemetery.
Lincoln Cemetery Liens Forgiven
The historic cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of people, dating to 1926 when the cemetery opened. These graves include more than 1,000 veterans, as well as an important Civil Rights leader.
Lincoln Cemetery’s history has close links to St. Petersburg’s Historic Gas Plant District. Three separate historically Black cemeteries once made up the land that currently is the parking lot to Tropicana Field.
Throughout the years, the Black community ended up on the outskirts as St. Petersburg expanded and urbanized. Lincoln Cemetery became an invaluable part of the culture of the area. Despite this, the cemetery faced the challenges of abandonment, and lack of upkeep.
Resolution 2024-05
This resolution deals with an agreement with Cross & Anvil Human Services, and forgives these Lincoln Cemetery liens and fees.
In early 2024, Cross & Anvil took over Lincoln Cemetery in Gulfport. Before that, Vanessa Gray had the responsibility of caring for the historically Black cemetery. The cemetery owner faced challenges, including multiple code enforcement issues and liens on the property.
Read more about Lincoln Cemetery’s history in part two of our series about historically Black cemeteries, A Grave Situation.
Gulfport’s Community Development department took a step toward the digital age. At the May 21 Gulfport City Council meeting, the City approved of a portal for Gulfport’s Community Development department to collect payments online.
Resolution 2024-26
This resolution provides a possible solution to a problem that many Gulfport residents and businesses consistently mention, both at council and to this paper’s staff.
Gulfportians have long expressed their issues with the community development department, and permitting. One of the biggest concerns involves the lack of online payments.
At previous council meetings, residents spoke about their frustrations with the lengthy process of applying for and earning permits. Many spoke about how they dislike the need to go to the community development office, and have long wait time to pay for their permits.
Gulfport’s Community Development
As of May 22, this is no longer the case. The department opened an online portal for people to pay for community development related issues online with ease. The resolution approves BS&A Payments as the processor for these transactions. The resolution passed unanimously.
Gulfport’s Community Development director, Fred Metcalf, retired earlier this month.
Later in the meeting, the City held the second reading for two ordinances.
Both ordinances received their second reading at the meeting.
Ordinance 2024-04 provides a cost of living increase for retired police officers receiving benefits.
Ordinance 2024-05 is similar, for retired firefighters. Both passed unanimously on second reading.
Donations at the May 21 Gulfport City Council meeting totaled almost $10,000. The Circle of Friends donated $5,000 to the library, and the Gulfport Rec Center received a $4,000 donation from the Sons of the American Legion. Council also discussed Older Americans’ Month.

teering and donations. According to their website, “Circle of Friends Services is a nonprofit community mental health provider offering trauma-focused services to children and families in the home, school or clinic.” Valerie Welch, the chairperson of the organization, spoke about new developments with the organization.
“Over the last two years, we have brought in an average of $17,500,” said Welch. “At the same time, we have disbursed an average of $16,000.”
Along with this, Welch spoke about a donation to the library from another organization, the Hello In There Foundation. Out of three $5,000 grants available, the Foundation decided to provide one to the library. The donation will come through the Circle of Friends, as it is a 501(c)(3) organization.
“I think this really says so much about how much this community appreciates a library,” said Welch.
Sons of the American Legion Donations at Gulfport City Council
The City heard another donation, this time to the Gulfport Recreation Center.
The Sons of the American Legion Post 125 made a donation in the form of a scholarship program for children to enjoy the summer camp program. Essentially, the $4,000 donation allows multiple children who can’t afford the summer camp to still use the service.
Older Americans’ Month
The proclamation highlights the importance of supporting people of all ages in a community. It reads, “The City of Gulfport can work to build an even better community for our older residents by: not limiting our thinking about aging, exploring and combating stereotypes, emphasizing the many positive aspects of aging, and inspiring older adults to push past traditional boundaries.”
According to the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the month’s theme for 2024 is “Powered by Connection.” This theme highlights the importance of connecting people of older generations with each other, as well as encouraging younger generations
to learn from their elders.
At the May 21 Gulfport City Council meeting, the City approved of a donation benefiting the Gulfport Library summer programs.
Resolution 2024-29
This resolution accepts a grant from the Florida Humanities Summer Reading Program in the amount of $1,700.
When Mayor Sam Henderson asked if any council members had questions, April Thanos (Ward I) simply said, “Yay!”
“Yay sounds like a good comment to me,” said Henderson. After no one in the public had any questions or comments, Henderson said, “Unanimous yay.”
Gulfport Library Summer Program Grant
Essentially, the grant will support summer reading programs for children at the public library. While reading is obviously the focus of the summer, the grant also will fund two events at the library.
According to the Gulfport Public Library’s Children’s Librarian Julia Petit, the summer program runs every Wednesday at 3 p.m. from June 5 to July 31. This includes events like a reptile show on June 5, and a magician on July 31.
The funding for the Library went towards two of these events. The first is a storytelling event on June 12 by Ross Tarr and Wanda Stuart. The stories focus on Florida history and Juneteenth history. The second is a meet and greet with local author Ana Sigueria on July 24. The grant also goes towards books for giveaway and the library’s collection.
Interested children can participate in the summer reading program by downloading the free app Beanstack. Here, the library runs their summer reading challenge. Kids who read eight books, attend eight events, or a mix of both, are eligible to win prizes at the July 31 magician event.
The resolution passed unanimously.

MARIVEL GUTIERREZ
St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch spoke on the City’s plan to expand affordable housing to the residents.
Section 28-1 of the City Code states affordable housing is for, “persons or families whose annual household income is not more than 60 percent AMI.” The City of St. Petersburg’s AMI is $66,900.
The housing units designated as “affordable” as part of the plan, 1,124 meet the City Code definition. Almost 80% of the units offered as affordable by the City target people who earn at least $40,140.
Comparatively, less than 8% of the units are available for the lowest income households. The plan for affordable housing offers more options to households at the top end of the income scale, compared to the bottom end.
How Affordable are They?

July 10 Florida Woman (Deb Rogers)
August 14 The Lola Quartet (Emily St. John Mandel)
the City provided a spreadsheet detailing each development, how much they cost, and how many units are available at each income level.
As part of the spreadsheet, the City broke down the income requirements based on how many people live in a home. The City website details how much money a household must earn to fit into the brackets. The City income limits from $20,100-$93,660, with households up to eight people.
According to censusreporter.org, 35% of St. Petersburg residents make less than $50,000 per year. If an individual made $50,000 each year, they would fit into the 60% AMI bracket.
However, if an individual makes $33,450 each year, they would be placed in the 50% AMI bracket, and would lose more than 70% of the affordable housing options. This plan will make 134 housing units available for households at 30% AMI, such as a family of four earning $31,200 each year.
As part of the plan, the City plans on 605 housing units for the 80-120% AMI bracket. This means

CITY
that as part of the plan focused towards delivering affordable housing to the City, an individual making $80,280 a year has access to 471 more new housing units than a person in the 30% AMI bracket. Residents making four times the lowest income bracket have more than four times the new housing units available to them as the lowest household incomes do.
How Do Restrictions Work?
AMI restrictions on individual units can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years, according to the City. City officials also say that renters who earn more than the AMI limit for a certain unit can pay 30% of their yearly income as their rent.
St. Petersburg’s City Code discusses affordable housing tax relief, and the benefits to developers. Section 28, Article II defines tax exemptions to developers who build “affordable” rental units. The development projects must have at least 50 units with 20% of them rented to people earning 60% AMI or below. A new development where all of the units are affordable can receive a full tax exemption. A mixed development can get up to a 75% exemption.
The Housing Down Payment Assistance Program allows up to $60,000 in aid for first-time home buyers. Potential homeowners earning up to 140% of the AMI qualify for assistance. Along with the financial aid, the program provides homeowner education, and requires 1% of the sale price as payment.
The Renter Utility Relief Program is a way for renters to keep up with their bills. The program provides financial assistance for St. Petersburg renters up to 18 months behind on their utility bills. Households earning less than 80% AMI qualify for assistance.
More City Code
The spreadsheet from the CBAC meeting details the cost to the City for the development. The City subsidized multiple developments, totaling $5.08 million in public funding. The rest of the $542,209,221 is listed as “other” on the sheet.
For developers to earn an exemption, they must apply. These applications are reviewed by the Person Officially Designated (POD). The POD also enforces code compliance. To appeal a POD decision, reach out to the City Administrator. The Affordable Housing Tax Relief ordinance expires in 2026, unless it is renewed.
As part of the ordinance, the St. Petersburg City Council discussed why these tax exemptions are important.
“Affordable housing is an essential component of individual and community well-being, yet thousands of Pinellas County residents remain unhoused,” the ordinance reads. “Providing tax relief, as authorized by statute, will help facilitate the construction of more affordable rental units and the retention of existing units that may otherwise be converted to market rate.”
Along with the previously listed requirements, a development cannot have three or more code violation citations within 24 months prior to an application. Before applying, the developer must fix all code violations on the property.
Neither the City nor the developer have disclosed how much they will charge to rent the units.
Future for St. Petersburg
Separate from the housing built by the City discussed in this article, the Rays/Hines deal promises 1,250 affordable and workforce housing units over the next 23 years. 500 units are available to people in the 120% AMI bracket. 100 are for the 100% AMI bracket. 350 units go to the 80% AMI bracket, and the final 300 go to the 60% AMI bracket.
Throughout multiple City meetings, community members discussed their personal issues with the plan and the Rays/Hines deal.
“What good is building a stadium?” asked Oscar Banks. “We can’t worry about a stadium. We need to worry about housing.”
Kathy Filippelli echoed this, saying, “All of us have heard and know we are in a crisis state of affordable housing.”

Colorful Changes and Celebrations Eckerd College’s Lavender Graduation Honors LGBTQ+ Students
By Nicole Vogler
Although Eckerd College’s class of 2024 graduated on May 19, the college offered an option for students to celebrate in a more intimate setting. This less-talked about celebration is Lavender Graduation.
The college held a Lavender Graduation in Fox Hall on May 8 as an opportunity to honor students of all identities for their achievements.
“It is a wonderful celebration of our students, those who identify within the categories of LGBTQ+, ally students, and other students who are committed to ensuring that our community celebrates with joy, difference, and the contributions of individuals of all types, all perspectives, all lifestyles,” said Eckerd College President James J. Annarelli.
What is a Lavender Graduation?
The Human Rights Campaign described Lavender Graduation as an annual ceremony on campuses honoring “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, intersex, queer, asexual/aromantic, and ally students” for all of their “achievements and contributions to the University.”
The use of the color lavender is because of its significance to the LGBTQ+ community. Lavender is a symbol of pride and resilience.
The University of Michigan held the first Lavender Graduation ceremony in 1995 with three graduates.
Ronni Sanlo, Ed.D., helped start
Eckerd’s class of 2024 is the first group of graduates given the opportunity to put their chosen names on their diplomas.
the tradition after realizing how important it would be to her students. According to Sanlo’s website, she started Lavender Graduation because of the reported unhappiness of LGBTQ students. Along with that, Sanlo wasn’t invited to her children’s graduation because of her sexual orientation.
“I wanted their last taste of their college experience to be positive,” Sanlo said. “To remind them that they and their scholarship mattered to the academy.”
Now, more than 300 colleges and
universities nationwide host a Lavender Graduation. Typically, institutions hold this event the week before the traditional commencement ceremony.
Eckerd College’s Lavender Graduation
“It’s more of a celebration than it is a formal graduation event,” said Lova Patterson, Eckerd’s director of student activities.
Patterson accredited most of the event’s success to President Annarelli. She said it’s his “baby” as well.
In an interview with President Annarelli, he said the idea to bring the Lavender Graduation tradition to Eckerd extends back to a 2018 alumni trip he took to New York City. On his trip, he spoke with an Eckerd alumnus who showed interest in LGBTQ+ student-related initiatives.
That April, Annarelli met with Patterson to talk about the logistics of making this a tradition at Eckerd. The two also talked about making the event in consultation with the Eckerd College Queer Straight Alli-

ance (ECQSA). They hosted the first one after COVID-19-related interruptions in May 2021.
“I am really thrilled that what began as a suggestion of an alumnus is growing into a tradition,” Annarelli said.
This year was the school’s fourth time hosting the event.
Considerate Collaborations
Annarelli and Patterson have a history of collaboration and working alongside each other. Evidently, Annarelli hired her first when he became interim vice president and dean in 2001. Patterson was also one of Annarelli’s students in 1998, but she had to drop his class. She jokes that her withdrawal is something the president will never let her live down.
Annarelli said that Director of Religious Life and Chaplain Doug McMahon also committed to “making this ceremonial celebration available to students” from the very beginning. Upon hosting the first celebration, Annarelli and Patterson realized some of the participating students were not yet out to their families. Because of this, this event is without photographers until the “ceremony” portion concludes. This ensures the
comfortability
of all the graduates.
Editor’s note: Students photographed for the purpose of this article gave permission prior.
For many Eckerd students, Lavender Graduation is a chance to celebrate their identity in a personal, laidback setting. For others, it is a chance to graduate with their chosen name. This is a choice Eckerd students haven’t historically had at traditional graduation. That is, until this year.
New Horizons for Diplomas
Eckerd’s class of 2024 is the first graduating class given the option to put their chosen name on their diploma.
Annarelli said this choice was very important to him especially because it was a product of student inquiry. Students brought this desire to his attention by asking him why they couldn’t change the name printed on the certificate.
“The diploma itself is more of a ceremonial document,” said Jacqueline MacNeil, executive director of institutional effectiveness and incoming interim registrar. “We can’t budge on the transcript; that needs to be the legal name. But, the diploma is ceremonial and therefore not problematic.”
According to Annarelli, she has been a pivotal player in making this change possible. She worked on the logistics even before becoming the official interim registrar.
Lavender Graduation Students
“It was like a holiday for me when I found out,” said Arlo Kiss, Eckerd graduate and president of ECQSA.
One of Arlo’s friends next to him said that was a “very Arlo” thing to say and gave him a tight hug. After graduation, Arlo plans to find a career in advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.

Other students expressed their relief, saying the thought of having their dead name on their diploma would keep them up at night. Some said they didn’t feel proud or comfortable framing something that doesn’t have their chosen name on it.
Before the Lavender Graduation celebration, Assistant Director for Inclusive Excellence Blanca García ‘03 said that this development is an important and unique step by Eckerd. It creates a conversation around acceptance that many schools don’t have.
“I really value the cultural leadership of Eckerd students,” García said, looking around at the graduates greeting one another with hugs and excited squeals.
Overlooked by Organizations
Annarelli recalled how in the ‘90s, most organizations didn’t recognize domestic relationships between same-sex couples for benefits purposes, but Eckerd did.
“Our community, I’m proud to say, has always been very, very accepting and embracing of differences,” Annarelli said.
“Having a Lavender Graduation is such a nice experience to celebrate queerness in all its different forms and identities,” said Brooks Jordan, graduate and former captain of the
Eckerd sailing team, while waiting for the ceremony to begin. “I think that a lot of universities and colleges have queerness on campus, but it’s not celebrated to the extent Eckerd does.”
As a student-athlete, his main goal is to shine a light on the presence of LGBTQ+ people in sports. He believes people often overlook this identity.
“It’s really nice to have a real space that’s curated towards us,” Jordan said. “and now everyone can celebrate their identity in any way they want to.”
He recently found out Berry College accepted him into its PA program. He will begin in the fall.
A Lavender Graduation Celebration
Once the event officially began, everyone grabbed a few last pieces of cheese from the charcuterie board in the back, gave their final compliments to their friends’ eyeshadow, and found their seats.
The ceremony began with open-
ing remarks from Vice President for Student Life Amy Falvo, Patterson, McMahon, and Annarelli. Afterward, Falvo called each graduating senior by their name and pronouns, followed by a short biography of who they are, and what their plans are after graduation.
“As a chaplain, who believes in God, I also believe that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons are created in the image of God and our diversity shows the glory of God,” said McMahon in his opening remarks. “Whether you believe in God or not, please know that you are created in the image of love just as you are.”
Many sniffles from the crowd accompanied these words as several students wiped tears from their cheeks. McMahon’s speech concluded with a blessing, then a statement from Annarelli followed.
“This is a proud heritage of which now we are a part,” Annarelli said. “You make each of us better. And you have made the Eckerd community better!”

Skyway Marina District Plans for Dairy Queen
By David Warner
A vintage photo of a Dairy Queen in Key West. The new DQ in the Skyway Marina District will definitely not look like this.
Get ready to Grill & Chill, denizens of the Skyway Marina District.
In February, The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Skyway Marina District real estate broker Frank Bozikovich. Our first question was, “What’s going to happen to the raggedy lot in front of Sur Club Apartments?”
Well, Bozikovich still can’t tell us. He said he and Sur Club owner Don Phillips continue to wait for an offer that’ll be a good fit with Phillips’s luxury apartment complex.
But, Bozikovich gave us the deets on a development next door to Sur — the “national dessert quick-serve restaurant” that he referred to in the February story.
As many readers guessed, the restaurant is to be a branch of Dairy Queen. The location is somewhat unexpected. It’ll be in front of Aldi’s shopping plaza.
Dairy Queen in the Future
The former owner of the plaza sold the majority of the property to a Canadian investor several years ago. However, the owner held on to the .6-
acre out-parcel that fronted it on 34th Street South. That owner, who died last year, sold the parcel to another Bozikovich client.
On May 17, the broker negotiated a 20-year land lease deal between the client and Dairy Queen for “a topshelf dollar amount.” An opening date is many months away. It of course will be dependent on site plans, city permitting, and construction.
Bozikovich said this will be a drive-thru Dairy Queen with indoor and outdoor seating. Customers will
be able to access it via one of the three existing entrances to the Aldi’s plaza parking lot. The building will not open up directly onto 34th.
Other Developments Along 34th
As for other developments in the Skyway Marina District, Bozikovich sees a change in attitude.
“The market is getting mature,” he said. “It’s no longer the Wild West, where I had a hard time bringing someone there and tumbleweeds were rolling down 34th Street.”
People are aware of what’s going on, development is ongoing, and real estate prices are rising accordingly. Investors from outside the area are taken aback.
“Back in the day, an acre was worth a million. Now it’s $2 million,” Bozikovich said.
Two huge properties will play a big role in determining the Skyway Marina District’s future. The 34-acre former Ceridian campus is a demolition site now. It will become an Atlis Cardinal’s apartment community called Sky Town with more than 2,000 units.
Across 34th Street from Sky Town, the 17.2-acre Allstate campus of St. Petersburg College is for sale. Who knows whether some version of the three R’s (residential/retail/restaurants) will surface or something else we don’t know about yet?
According to a February 2024 report in the St. Pete Catalyst, the college was set to make a decision about the sale “within six months.” Updates on the decisions will be available closer to this summer.

St. Pete Summer Sports Leagues
The City of St. Petersburg shared excitement for the return of the St. Petersburg summer sports leagues. The program welcomes adults interested in friendly games of basketball, flag football, kickball, and softball.
• Basketball: The basketball leagues are split differently.
Players can join the 40 years and older, men’s league on Tuesdays. Additionally, the 45 years and older, men’s league play on Wednesdays. The men’s league for players 18 years and older play on Thursdays.
The team registration fee is $350 for a six game season.
• Flag Football: Flag football has a Monday men’s league as well as a Tuesday men’s league. As of this
year, there is an additional league on Thursdays for the women’s league.
The team registration fee is $350 with a six game season and the top four teams playing in the tournament.
• Kickball: Kickball has a Tuesday coed league and a Thursday coed league.
The team registration fee is $250. The fee contributes to a six game season, with the top four teams in the league going to the finals tournament.
• Softball: The softball leagues are split into three. A men’s league and a coed league both play from Monday through Thursday.
Along with that, a new league for men 50 years and older will play on Mondays. The team registration fee is $350 with a six game season.
To register, visit stpeteparksrec. org. The games begin the week of June 24. Teams currently playing in the league can register during priority registration from May 27-June 4. For priority registration, teams can go to the St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation office, or register by mail. From June 5-18, teams can register for general registration. These slots are on a first come, first served basis. Because of that, not all teams will be able to register.
St. Pete’s Pride Amplified
In honor of Pride Month, the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg will host a community event focusing on Pride. The May 31 event will offer a four-part presentation by the 9 Colors Initiative called Pride Amplified: Navigating LGBTQIAA+ Spaces.
14 thegabber.com | May 30, 2024 - June 5, 2024
Summer is here and so are the St. Petersburg summer sports leagues. Join to play basketball, flag football, kickball, and softball.
OF ST. PETERSBURG
CITY
According to the Foundation, 9 Colors Initiative’s presentation at the Center for Health Equity intends to enlighten and impact others to celebrate Pride together.
What started as a group of young college students in 2016 turned in to the 9 Colors Initiative. The 501(c) (3) nonprofit’s mission is to “promote equity and inclusivity within the LGBTQIAA+ & allied communities in Florida.”
9 Colors Initiative addresses “social and health disparities that disproportionately affect Black queer people and their families in the central west, southwest, and south regions of Florida.” They also provide community feeding programs and health resource services.
This makes the Florida-based nonprofit closely related to the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg. The Foundation works to empower people, exchange information, and end differences in health because of institutional racism.
From noon to 5 p.m., guests will network, eat, and ask questions at the four-part community event. The Foundation will provide food and refreshments for registered guests.
The first part is the “Inclusive Resource Showcase.” This showcase connects guests with inclusive health organizations. These organizations “champion equity and diversity in the BIPOC trans and nonbinary community,” according to the Foundation.
“Lunch-n-Learn: The Foundation
of Nonprofits” follows as the second part. Guests will learn how to build sustainable organizations positively impacting the BIPOC LGBTQ+ community.
The Foundation states this part “will cover how to apply for 501(c)(3) status, learn basic grant application and management skills, and register with MyFloridaMarketPlace (MFMP) to receive state/federal funding.”
“Media Training with GLAAD” is part three. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) nonprofit focuses on LGBTQ advocacy and cultural change.
This part of the presentation will teach guests how to use their voices for “LGBTQIAA+ representation and advocacy.” Guests will learn how to have conversations that accurately represent and advocate for the LGBTQ community.
The final part to the event is a panel discussion called “Let’s Be Real Part Two”.
Guests will “engage in honest dialogue about vital topics in the BIPOC LGBTQIAA+ community,” according to the Foundation. This conversational opportunity will allow guests to ask questions and understand topics such as mental health and relationships.
Online registration is free for anyone interested. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

The Dalí Museum’s Latest Exhibit
By Abby Baker
Full disclosure, I wasn’t over-thetop inspired at the prospect of a flower-themed exhibit at The Dalí Museum.
However, the St. Pete museum’s special exhibit, Reimagining Nature: Dalí’s Floral Fantasies, was a pleasantly captivating explosion of color and life. The man was ahead of his time in combining natural beauty with absolutely freaky surrealism.
Reimagining Nature: Dalí’s Floral Fantasies
The first suite of the Salvador Dalí special exhibit features botanical prints and oil paintings. On first impression, many of these prints are your standard horticultural posters, featuring subjects like pea plants and hibiscus flowers.
You may recognize the look of the framed prints from the Urban Outfitters art section, but take a closer look. You will see those famous Dalí touches. In a seemingly typical painting of a passionfruit vine, there’s a pair of acrobatically intertwined women, circus performers, and penciled in cattle ranchers in the distance.
The artist combines many of his botanical creations with human body parts, breakfast items, anything that doesn’t belong in a Pea Plant poster painting — it is there.
“Dalí seems to predict the marvels of genetic engineering, pressing the boundaries of what is imaginable and inspiring new ways of seeing the world,” said The Dalí Museum Executive Director Hank Hine.
The famous “flower-headed” women that Dalí dreamt up, and eventually inspired his 1939 Vogue magazine cover, are sprinkled all throughout the exhibit. We see him experiment with this concept in strikingly intricate paintings, as well as roughed-in sponge and oil.
The Dalí Museum’s Latest Exhibit
For anyone interested in art pop culture, it’s a fascinating look at how the painter expanded his now-famous designs over a period of time.
Peter Tush, The Dalí Museum’s Curator of Education and curator of Dalí’s Floral Fantasies , put together a collection of all of the artist’s floral and fauna inspired work. He did not find the obvious ones, either. The work spans from simple sketches of his early years, to Andy Warhol inspired paintings from the ‘70s.
“For him, nature was a source of not only beauty, but also of his singular approach to visual transformation. These images represent some of the most provocative and whimsical inventions Dalí ever made,” Tush said.
Walk past the print and painting portion of the exhibit, and you’ll find the most breathtaking portion of Floral Fantasies . The exhibit displayed portions of
Dalí’s botanical paintings from the floor to the ceiling on a glowing white screen. There’s something about the giant versions of Dalí’s work that is exciting — check out “Lincoln in Dalivision” next door in the permanent collection to see what I mean.
The projectors enlarged the paintings to cover the entire wall. They are still bizarre and striking.
Botanicals aren’t the most captivating of subjects, unless you’re a huge fan of hotel still lives. However, Dalí’s Floral Fantasies is a fascinating collection of surrealism and real life from the mind of the museum’s namesake.
Plus, the famous Dalí spiral staircase feels like you’re walking around a Coachella flower crown. Small bouquets of flowers line up along the railings of the second floor.
Altogether, this summer’s special Dalí exhibit does not disappoint. The exhibit runs through Oct. 24, 2024.
The Dalí Museum, 1 Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. $15-29. 727-823-3767, thedali.org.

Satisfy Your Caffeinated Cravings
Top Tastes: Best St. Pete Beach Coffee Shops
By Morgan Banno
For this edition of Top Tastes, we found the best St. Pete Beach coffee shops to visit this summer. Drive down Blind Pass Road to Corey Avenue and Gulf Boulevard to satisfy your caffeine needs at these special cafés.
Bougiest Menu: Cocoa Addiction ($5.85)
If you truly want to seduce your tastebuds first thing in the morning, Cocoa Addiction is a must-visit. Step inside and you will immediately feel enveloped in the sweet aromas of coffee and chocolate. (Is there a better combination?) This decadent eatery boasts a selection of caffeinated sips along with artisan chocolates and French savoir-faire, including breakfast pastries, massive cookies, and savory bites.
Cocoa Addiction is spearheaded by renowned local chefs Grégory Putin and Oliver Rodriguez. If you haven’t sampled their goodies, you don’t know what you’re missing. Whether your morning perk is an espresso or you prefer something sexier, like a coquito latte, Cocoa Addiction’s creations will make you feel like you’re in a different world. They feature local beans from Made Coffee, that are smooth and light. Additionally, enjoy complimentary chocolates (think William Dean-style) when you dine in. These delicate confections are the perfect pick-me-up for any morning along the gulf beaches. Cocoa Addiction, 344 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach. Wed.-Sun., 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; closed Monday and Tuesday. 727-390-2626, cocoaddiction-mia. com.
The Centre Kava & Coffee Exchange ($5.39)
Shake up your wake up with coffee and kava at The Centre. This low-key, multipurpose establishment is part coffee shop and part
wellness studio. Not only will you find quickly-crafted espresso bevies and teas, but the menu also features a range of kava and kratom for those who prefer a more mellow start to the day. It’s a medical-marijuana centric café offering CBD and Delta-9 THC (for those 21 and older) where you can lace your brew with the right amount of chill for the day.
The coconut milk latte I ordered was smaller (8 oz.) compared to the other two shops I sampled but the vibe is by far, the most relaxed. The shared space is used for wellness classes like yoga and sound baths, as well as sexual health, acoustic wave therapy, and an all-purpose business center. Membership isn’t required for coffee purchases but you do get discounts on “deeper feels.” The coffee isn’t strong but the vibes are chill and the service is super friendly and fast.
The Centre Kava & Coffee Exchange, 7525 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach. Mon.-Sat., 7 a.m.-12 a.m.; Sun., 7 a.m.-2 p.m. 727-4093009, thecentrespb.com.
Grove Surf & Coffee is a mixed concept space that combines a retail surf shop and specialty coffee bar. Located next door to The Frog Pond, this coffee shop is jumping with activity all times of day. Granted, it’s a tourist hub, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying mild brews made with roasted beans from St. Pete fave, Bandit Coffee.
Grove is an inviting space where you can shop, sip and relax. I ordered an almond milk latte that was tepid and hot. Try a coconut latte, the house speciality, with toasted coconut-steeped syrup, mixed with signature espresso and milk, and topped with toasted coconut shavings. They also serve kombucha, tea, and array of sweets. Don’t expect the boldest coffee, but you’ll love the ambiance. There are plenty of nifty gifts to shop for.
Grove Surf & Coffee, 7370 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. Sun.-Thurs., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 8 a.m.-6 p.m. 727-2893634, grovesurfandcoffee.com.

Card of Thanks
POWERFUL PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Holy Spirit, you who solves all problems, who lights all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who give me the divine gifts to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things and confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you, even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you, in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After 3 days the favor requested will be granted, even if it may appear difficult. This prayer must be published immediately after the favor is granted, without mentioning the favor, only your initials should appear at the bottom. 4AD
